Transcript
- 0:01All right, it's Wayne Dan. I gotta tell you right now. The
- 0:03first time I met this girl, she's like, oh, nice to meet
- 0:06you. Now she walks into a room and everybody knows her name. She
- 0:09can't go to an award show and not bring extra space in her luggage because
- 0:13you know, damn well, she's gonna have to leave with something. Ladies
- 0:15and gentlemen, the award winning, stunningly talented and gorgeous scale herself. Landy
- 0:21Wilson, how are you? You'm a hype my end? You just feel
- 0:24good? Some artists need like a hype video on a hype track. Just
- 0:27let me get out there. I know you ought you ought to do that.
- 0:30You start coming to the shows with us. How funny wouldn't be if
- 0:33you started your show like a rap like a rap show. I'd be like,
- 0:36y'all need to get up. When I say Landy, you say will
- 0:38it's Laney, and then you're like, I gotta huya thank. I mean,
- 0:46you know it's about trying something different, stepping outside of your comfort zone.
- 0:50Let's do it. Speaking of that, how much of this is is
- 0:53in your comfort zone? Because you know it's what did you call it?
- 0:58Like a ten year overnight success or whatever, because you literally have gone from
- 1:02zero to one hundred and it just keeps going. Another award, show passes
- 1:07and Leaney Wilson's got more hardware. Are you comfortable in this space yet?
- 1:11It's a weird. It's a weird feeling because I say yes and no.
- 1:15Yes. I feel like the twelve years of being here in Nashville has like
- 1:19prepared me for all these incredible moments. I don't know if i'd have been
- 1:23even ready a year ago. But also no, because I don't know if
- 1:27you can fully actually prepare for um, like what's really happening. I'm trying
- 1:33to hold on for dear life. Boy, I'm like, we off to
- 1:34the races? Is it is crazy? It's crazy. I mean last year
- 1:41I played a show in tusca Loosa and sold eighty seven tickets. Shut your
- 1:45mouth, I'm not playing. I'm not playing now. I got eighty seven
- 1:49family members saying hey, I'm coming to the show. I'm like, where
- 1:52were you last year in Tuscaloosa? Right? Like I could have used y'all
- 1:56just saying it When it comes to that, what's been the toughest thing to
- 2:00get acclimated to LifeWise, because your life isn't the same today as it was
- 2:06a year for sure. I mean, even like last year, you know
- 2:08you had. I had a million things I had to do, Like I
- 2:10told y'all, I've slept in my bed fifteen nights last year. But it
- 2:15seems like a quarter of those things I had to do were like really really
- 2:19important, and like a lot of pressure comes along with it. Now it
- 2:23just seems like everything is huge, and so there's an extra I had a
- 2:27layer of pressure, but I do better under pressure. So let's do it.
- 2:30Yeah, you're doing pretty fine. I wouldn't worry about it. You
- 2:35just wrapped up a massive number one song with Hardy That Did that feel special?
- 2:39Did it? I mean it felt special because obviously the topic is something
- 2:43that is rarely addressed in music. But did it feel like it had the
- 2:47potential to go above just connecting and actually be a massive song like that?
- 2:53I knew it when he sent me that song last summer in the airport.
- 2:57I mean, He's like, this is the best song I've ever written,
- 3:00which is hard for me to believe because I think everything the boy writes is
- 3:02just it's just great. He's a storyteller. Yeah, so, Um,
- 3:07I knew that it was gonna grow a set of wings. I didn't know.
- 3:10I didn't know if radio would play it, but I knew that,
- 3:14Um, with the kind of fan base that he has, that it was
- 3:17gonna spread like wildfire. And I'm so thankful to be a part of it.
- 3:22Especially. I mean, he's just one of my He's one of my
- 3:23boys. You know, he's like a brother to me. And to get
- 3:28to do that, to get to share such a special song with somebody who's
- 3:30like blood to me, it's just special. When you are a part of
- 3:35a tour, usually you will get a gift towards the end of it,
- 3:38right, It'll be like, oh, you know, thanks for being part
- 3:40of the tour. Here's Jordan Davis told us when he was with Kane Browne,
- 3:45he gave him a Rolex at the end of the tour. Is that
- 3:46the same with big songs like that, when when you do a song with
- 3:49someone there like you know, congrats number one, here you go, thanks
- 3:52part of it. He did text me the other day and he said,
- 3:53I got you a gift and I'm like, well, I don't have it
- 3:58yet because he was out of town. And then I out of town.
- 4:00We just haven't been here at the same time, so Hardy. If you
- 4:01listening, brother, you better give me my gift. Listen, I didn't
- 4:04get you one. Your gift wasn't. When it comes to your plans the
- 4:14rest of the year, it's interesting because when you agree to be a part
- 4:17of somebody else's tour, you're agreeing to be a part of it where you
- 4:21are at that time, right right, well now, since you've agreed to
- 4:25be a part of these tours, Landy Wilson Stock has done nothing but gone
- 4:28up right, She's the Tesla country music that gets edited out. I'll tell
- 4:32you that, uh put the Tesla people in country music. Gonna slap me
- 4:36for talking about electric cars. Um, but do you look now like,
- 4:42well, y'all better enjoy this because you might be opening up for me next
- 4:45time. Oh. I'm definitely like, I'm soaking it in. Um.
- 4:50It is wild because it does feel like we've kind of been shot out of
- 4:54a cannon. And a lot can happen in a year, you know.
- 4:59I mean like Luke asked me to be a part of this tour probably a
- 5:02year ago, and um, yeah, a lot can happen and change.
- 5:08But you're right. I tell all them boys, I'm like, y'all gonna
- 5:10be hoping it up for me one day. Y'all don't even know it,
- 5:12but that is the plan. That's the goal. I hype and then I
- 5:15intro Luke Combs and then Lady Wilson closes the show. That sounds like the
- 5:20best tour you the hype Manum, have you had downtime? I mean,
- 5:25because now we're going into a brand new single. What's we're going to touch
- 5:28on in a minute here? But you had mentioned, uh, last time
- 5:30we caught up before the ACM Awards that like you miss writing, you miss
- 5:35like sitting in like having your time. Have you gotten to do that?
- 5:39I have, um a little bit. Like last week I got to go
- 5:43out to Miranda's farm and we wrote some songs, and so it's a it's
- 5:47like, yes, I'm kind of getting to slow down and breathe, but
- 5:53I'm also still working. You know what I'm saying. The work. The
- 5:56work ain't ain't stopping right now. And that's all right. I mean,
- 5:59it's just you just like get on down the road and it's not going to
- 6:02always be this busy, Yeah, but it is right now, can I
- 6:06tell you how cool your life is? You went from probably three years ago
- 6:12to not really knowing Miranda Lambert at all, right, and you just first
- 6:15named her and oh yeah, I did. I did you know what I
- 6:17told her the other day too? I said, it is so weird that
- 6:20this is not weird that you were my friend. And she was like,
- 6:24oh, I was like, for real, I said, I said,
- 6:27I don't even know if I've gotten a chance to tell you how big of
- 6:28an influence you have been to every female in this town I'm talking about.
- 6:33She was like, don't lie, she said, you know, uh,
- 6:35Leanne Walmac influenced me and you both. I said, of course she did.
- 6:39She made me feel like I could do anything. I set my mind
- 6:42too with I hope you dance, but Miranda made me feel like I could
- 6:44burn it down at the same time. That's true. That's true. And
- 6:46how do you keep how do you keep cool in a situation like that?
- 6:50Because as you do get closer with somebody that you admire professionally and maybe maybe
- 6:56motivated you are inspired you, but they all of a sudden become a friend.
- 7:00How do you how do you manage that? Right? Because it's tough
- 7:02because you were a fan. You just said, right, you were a
- 7:03fan of Miranda. You were before anybody knew your name or before you could
- 7:08even sell eighty seven tickets to us, So like you loved her work,
- 7:12Oh my god, and now she's somebody you went to Miranda's farm and hung
- 7:15out as like her buddy. It's um, just like I said, it's
- 7:19it's weird that it's not weird. Um, I feel like me and her
- 7:24really do have a whole lot in common. Um, She's just she is
- 7:28exactly who you think she is. It ain't no boot on. I mean,
- 7:32like Miranda Lambert is is what you think. And um, and I
- 7:36love people like that. And so I think because it's her, because she
- 7:41is so normal, probably just makes me feel more comfortable. Um. I
- 7:45mean, I remember I was fourteen years old, my very first CEMMA fest,
- 7:50and they were selling these these little framed pictures of of people playing shows.
- 7:56And I found a picture of her. She was wearing like a turquoise
- 8:00shirt, playing or guitar, and I had it framed literally, just a
- 8:01picture of Miranda, like not signed or anything, just framed in my room.
- 8:07And so I don't know if That's that's why I feel like I know
- 8:09where because I'm like i've I've known you for a while. You're the first
- 8:11thing I saw when I woke up. Side note, don't tell her this
- 8:15story. Yeah, yeah, I'm Branda. How you didn't hear that?
- 8:18You didn't hear it here? So we are diving into a brand new song,
- 8:22which will be the next thing I ask, but I wanted to start
- 8:26with Landy Wilson has phenomenal music out there, and when you work with anybody,
- 8:31no matter who it's been so far, the outcome is another fantastic song
- 8:35that you're a part of. But for somebody who's just getting to know you
- 8:39or comes to a show, what's a song that people would be floored that
- 8:43you know? Maybe it's a song you get down to it and I'm not
- 8:46talking like country, I'm talking like, yeah, okay, other end of
- 8:48the spectrum. What's a weird song that Laney knows the words too and loves.
- 8:54I don't know if you'd say it's a weird song, but we covered
- 8:56the song a lot in some of my live shows. But rock and roll
- 9:00hoochieko oh yeah, rock hero Hoochie. Everybody's like, what in the world.
- 9:05I'm like, you, dang right, we're making a country. We're
- 9:07making it country. It's so much fun. I said today, I'm gonna
- 9:11ask this question. If she busts out like Tupac California Lover or something,
- 9:15I'm gonna follow. Can you imagine me try? Like no, like,
- 9:20I know what I can do, and I know what I can't do,
- 9:22and yeah, I say, I know a little bit of Uh, you're
- 9:26gonna be shocked. But back in high school, I learned every word to
- 9:31Colt forty five. You know what I'm talking about. Yeah, oh yeah.
- 9:35My parents were like, you have got to stop saying that you need
- 9:37to go to church. You go to church. You're like, y'all back
- 9:41off. Yeah, let me be and I would there's somebody listening somewhere that
- 9:48is dying to know this next question. And I swear to God we're here
- 9:50to talk music. We'll get to the new single. Hey, all of
- 9:54it? What is Laney Starbucks order? What is it today? This is
- 10:00a Grande iced brown sugar oh something shaking express. So I got all that
- 10:07backwards, but y'all know what I'm talking about. It that's what this is.
- 10:11But then I got the sweet cream on the top the home. See,
- 10:15I'm like, it's basically deserted. I'm trying to fit into a smaller
- 10:18T shirt, so I'm very far. It's like, yeah, take us
- 10:22to the new single, and out of everything you've given us so far,
- 10:26why does Watermelon Moonshine make sense for the summer? Because the other thing is
- 10:30when I heard the name, I was like, oh, this sounds like,
- 10:31you know, summer, and then I put it on and it's it
- 10:35gives you a summer vibe, but not like at the beach runner around.
- 10:39It's like Ta goes, it's a sun going down summer, you know,
- 10:43chill vibe. It's a vibe and I googled vibe. So it doesn't make
- 10:46sense to what she was saying. But why why for you? Were you
- 10:50like this is this is where I'm at and this is what's coming next?
- 10:52Well, um, I felt like it was the first of all the song
- 10:56that was raising its hand at like my shows and stuff. It seemed like
- 10:58everybody knows all the words to heart like a truck, and it really seemed
- 11:03like they were they were belting Watermelon Moonshine, And I really try to pay
- 11:09attention to that I'm like, Okay, what songs are really carrying over in
- 11:11my live shows? But also where I'm at personally right now is I feel
- 11:18like I'm I'm in a place where I'm trying to do anything I possibly can
- 11:22to stay grounded and remember where I come from. And that song does it
- 11:26for me. It takes me back to that young, naive, little Laney
- 11:31who thought she knew it all. I mean, every time I get to
- 11:33singing on stage, I feel like I'm back in basking back on the back
- 11:37roads, hiding the liquor in the back seat, hoping mom and Daddy don't
- 11:41smell it on me when I walked through the door, like those kind of
- 11:43stories, and I want to sing about those kind of things that that I
- 11:48still feel like me when it comes to picking like the radio single right It's
- 11:54it's probably something that you never even thought of as you were trying to walk
- 11:58in the door. You're like, I just want to make music. How
- 12:00much time do you put into something like that? I mean, you've mentioned
- 12:03that it's it had its hand raised? Was there anything else that You're like?
- 12:05Yeah? But what about I feel like, I mean, I'm partial
- 12:11because it's my record, but I feel I feel like there are a handful
- 12:15of songs on there that that could be radio songs. I definitely have to
- 12:18think about those things. I try not to when I'm like choosing which songs
- 12:24to record, but after the project is done, I'm like, Okay,
- 12:26if any of these were played on radio, what can I what can I
- 12:28imagine driving down the road and listening to And this was one of them.
- 12:33I mean, it just felt like it could It could be one of those
- 12:37songs that you get out there and you built. Or also it could just
- 12:39be in the background and it feels good. Uh. I also have to
- 12:43ask, as the album was coming out, there's statues down the street from
- 12:46our studio here in Nashville that were dressed in bell bottoms. Where are those
- 12:50bell bottoms now? Because I think I saw your instagram. Didn't somebody steal
- 12:54didn't somebody? Somebody somebody ripped off a couple pairs of the bell bottoms and
- 12:58took them with them. I'm like, my dear friend Shelley over at the
- 13:03label, she um it was her idea. She was like, we need
- 13:05to put some bridges on these bill bottoms, and that's how we're gonna celebrate
- 13:09this album release, and people loved it, loved it so much they had
- 13:13to go steal them. I wonder who that was, Miranda, Miranda did
- 13:18it? Miranda give us our Bill Bottoms back. I will tell you I
- 13:22appreciated those statues wearing pants because when I drive by him with my son he's
- 13:26seven, he goes, I'm like, nah, yeah, some things I
- 13:28needed some clothes. You mentioned hanging with Miranda and writing. You have done
- 13:35an amazing job with collaboration so far in your career, and so I'm going
- 13:39to ask the question that isn't ready to be announced, even if it's coming
- 13:43Laney and Miranda single, It's got to happen at some point. It has
- 13:46to. We wrote some great songs together. Does any of it, because
- 13:52I know you don't write a song as a collaboration. It just happens,
- 13:54right. Did you guys work on anything that felt like we might have to
- 13:58be on this one together? There were? There were pretty much all of
- 14:01them. Especially when she was kind of doing her thing in behind me as
- 14:05I was saying the demo down, I just felt like, hey, let's
- 14:09just collaborate on all three of them that we wrote. Let's just put out
- 14:11a record together. Um, it's got to happen at some point. It
- 14:16definitely needs to be the right thing, But I think that will kind of
- 14:18organically happen. I want to write with her some more and and see,
- 14:22you know, do we go sassy, do we go more down home?
- 14:24What is that? Because I think I think we could do either. And
- 14:28the other thing I wanted to say is everybody gives you credit for the bell
- 14:33Bottoms, that that you're rocking right, You've you've definitely brought bell bottom back
- 14:37into country. But nos, no disrespect to that. Your hat game is
- 14:43ridiculously fantastic. There's not a hat Landy camp rock. I feel well today
- 14:46I'm wearing a paper boy head. I'm a going to go deliver your mail.
- 14:50Yeah, that is funny. I was gone the headlines. Um,
- 14:54I'll say it's so funny because I'll look out at my shows and I mean,
- 14:58everybody's were bill bottoms and everybody's wearing hats, and you can just see
- 15:03people trying to peek around each other because everybody's hat is so dang big.
- 15:05They're like, coming to a Landy Wilson show is like who you're there to
- 15:09hear it you're not. Yeah, yeah, you can't see it, but
- 15:11you can hear it. What made you decide and listen to hard hitting questions
- 15:18always happening with us? What made you decide to not wear a hat during
- 15:20the ACM performance? Because I've seen you a hat so much. I was
- 15:22like, I know, is that lady, Yeah, there's some AI.
- 15:26Yeah, yeah, like what I will say? I felt like UM.
- 15:31For televised performances so far, I hadn't been able to show that, like
- 15:35that real sassy, um, kind of over the top thing. It's been
- 15:39you know, things A man, I don't know, it's been hard,
- 15:41like a truck. It's been waiting the truck and um or never say never.
- 15:45And I was ready to be like, you know what, I got
- 15:48this other side to me too, I can I can shake a leg and
- 15:50um. I felt like, well the performance that I did, I was
- 15:54kind of like tossing my hair back and forth, and I knew the hat
- 15:58was gonna come off either way. So it was like the best thing for
- 16:00me to do is toss this thing and show people that kind of be a
- 16:04little more vulnerable and be like this is me too, with or without the
- 16:07hat. There it is Landy Wilson, thanks for stopping bye. We appreciate
- 16:11you. Love y'all,
