Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Two incredible gladiators that came in as rivals, both unblemished
- 0:04Speaker 1: in a final stage. They left as pillars of this
- 0:07Speaker 1: new generation. It is a match for the archives, a
- 0:11Speaker 1: moment that tennis will measure itself against itself for years
- 0:15Speaker 1: to come. Sinner and Alcarez, as Jim Currier has seemed
- 0:20Speaker 1: them the new two, they are also now the now two.
- 0:24Speaker 1: They are the current, they are the future. They are incredible,
- 0:28Speaker 1: and they have made history today. As Carlos kisses that cup,
- 0:33Speaker 1: we can just sit here, collect our breath and say wow.
- 0:37Speaker 1: We are waiting Carlos Akarez. At any moment, Andre Agassi
- 0:40Speaker 1: is making his way up here. The Mcamura brothers on
- 0:43Speaker 1: the outside, Curry or Querry and left go here inside
- 0:46Speaker 1: the middle. Let's take a look at some of the
- 0:48Speaker 1: statistics that were made today that will likely not be
- 0:50Speaker 1: broken for quite some time. Second longest Slam final and
- 0:54Speaker 1: men's single history. The only one that beat it was
- 0:57Speaker 1: that twenty twelve Australian Open between and Djokovic first rolling
- 1:02Speaker 1: Garos Men's single final to reach a fifth.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Set tie break.
- 1:05Speaker 1: That seems crazy. Eighth comeback win went down two sets
- 1:10Speaker 1: in a final men's single in rolling Garros history. That
- 1:14Speaker 1: last time we saw that was Novak over Zizipas in
- 1:17Speaker 1: twenty twenty one and Carlos Alcarez his first career win
- 1:22Speaker 1: when trailing two and John. As you mentioned, it wasn't
- 1:25Speaker 1: just two, was O two and then a break. You
- 1:28Speaker 1: also mentioned you saw Carlos go to a mysterious liquid
- 1:32Speaker 1: in the middle of that match.
- 1:33Speaker 3: So at the it's funny like when these guys played
- 1:35Speaker 3: in the semi final last year, both of them were
- 1:37Speaker 3: suffering physically and it wasn't nearly as grueling as this one. Right,
- 1:41Speaker 3: it was a hand cramp in the middle of the
- 1:42Speaker 3: third for center. Alcaraz would later explain Impress that he
- 1:46Speaker 3: was trying to hide his leg cramps. Fitth set, he's
- 1:49Speaker 3: up three to one. He goes to the sideline, not
- 1:52Speaker 3: to get a racket change. He goes to get a
- 1:54Speaker 3: little vial. Now normally that's pickle juice, which the players
- 1:57Speaker 3: use to try and fight off cramps. It's really it
- 2:00Speaker 3: replenishes that aspect for the body he put in his mouth,
- 2:03Speaker 3: He swigged it, came back out to play. I'm wondering
- 2:06Speaker 3: and hopefully we'll get a chance to ask him where
- 2:08Speaker 3: he was physically at that stage because he didn't betray
- 2:11Speaker 3: any any cramps. He wasn't his leg wasn't popping like
- 2:14Speaker 3: it might be. It looked like Sinner might have had
- 2:16Speaker 3: a cramp sam in that first game when Alcarez hit
- 2:19Speaker 3: the drop shot, Cinner came up, got to it, but
- 2:22Speaker 3: didn't make the shot and then pulled up sort of lame.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Exactly pulled up lame, and he kind of, I would say,
- 2:28Speaker 2: for the next four games it looked like he was
- 2:30Speaker 2: a step slow. I think he saw Alcarez go to
- 2:32Speaker 2: the drop shot quite often there in the next four games,
- 2:34Speaker 2: and then again, to Sinner's credit, he kind of found
- 2:38Speaker 2: a second win. He ended up breaking Alcarez back midway
- 2:40Speaker 2: through the fit, and then it looked like he was
- 2:42Speaker 2: on top of things for a while. I mean, al
- 2:44Speaker 2: Karez served for the match, Center broke him that entire fist.
- 2:47Speaker 2: That really the entire match. I mean, there was probably
- 2:49Speaker 2: six different times you kind of in your head thought,
- 2:51Speaker 2: al Kraz has this, you know what, No Yannick has this.
- 2:54Speaker 2: You know what. I'm going back to Alcarez.
- 2:57Speaker 4: What you you mentioned you so longest pickle juice been around,
- 3:01Speaker 4: I'm guess seeing it all the time where.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Harold say, the first person I heard it from and
- 3:06Speaker 3: he'd lost in the finals here in the early eight
- 3:09Speaker 3: seventies yet, so it's been around. But these highlights were Patrick,
- 3:14Speaker 3: why don't you get in on this because this was
- 3:16Speaker 3: bananas watching it from up top.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I mean, you know, it was kind of what we expected.
- 3:20Speaker 2: I mean, the shot making. They were both going for it.
- 3:23Speaker 5: You know, Alcarez was making a few more mistakes like that.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Than we're used to see.
- 3:28Speaker 5: So first set goes pretty comfortably the center. Second set
- 3:31Speaker 5: we go to the tie break. You know, both guys
- 3:34Speaker 5: opening up, trying to open up the court. The drop
- 3:36Speaker 5: shot wasn't working as often.
- 3:39Speaker 4: That was one we went back.
- 3:40Speaker 5: Behind Alcraft to go up for two in the tie break.
- 3:43Speaker 5: Set point now out dress survey to try to stay
- 3:46Speaker 5: in it. And just again, you know I said before
- 3:51Speaker 5: the match, these guys are ability to hit on the
- 3:53Speaker 5: dead run with power remarkable from both players. And this
- 3:57Speaker 5: is where you know, Carlos start to pick it up,
- 4:01Speaker 5: starting to hit World War with the corehand. Drop shot again.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Wasn't didn't come into play as Sam's until late to
- 4:08Speaker 4: the match when he kind of turned it.
- 4:10Speaker 5: But at this point you know, this is when he
- 4:11Speaker 5: just was able to start getting some momentum going Johnny
- 4:14Speaker 5: mack in.
- 4:14Speaker 2: The crowd was.
- 4:16Speaker 5: Totally behind him because they wanted to see this match
- 4:18Speaker 5: for the distance.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Well, I've been there before where the crowd turns on
- 4:22Speaker 4: a dime, and I don't blame it for doing in
- 4:24Speaker 4: this case, well hear the match points. Here's match point
- 4:26Speaker 4: number one for Sinner.
- 4:29Speaker 2: This is when we ran the sets again. It was
- 4:31Speaker 2: gonna go the first one. I get the first one,
- 4:34Speaker 2: I get there.
- 4:34Speaker 4: It's a tough shot to pull off the second and
- 4:36Speaker 4: third one to he has some pretty darn good looks
- 4:38Speaker 4: at it.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Yep.
- 4:40Speaker 5: It was actually a second server turn of serve that
- 4:42Speaker 5: he he kind of went for him.
- 4:44Speaker 4: It didn't really go for it.
- 4:46Speaker 2: And then when you know.
- 4:47Speaker 4: He served for it, then you they'll serve for it.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Guyers game and he couldn't do it.
- 4:51Speaker 5: And that's where you really felt that it was turning.
- 4:55Speaker 5: But still in the tie break, you know, Cinner was
- 4:57Speaker 5: able to get back and get to the time.
- 4:58Speaker 2: It looked like that wouldn't happen.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Uh and after as it's just you know, he reminds
- 5:03Speaker 5: me of no back, you know, and the tide break
- 5:06Speaker 5: so clutch, and now he does it in a little
- 5:08Speaker 5: bit of a different way.
- 5:09Speaker 4: He goes for it, and he was going for it
- 5:11Speaker 4: and he was making it.
- 5:13Speaker 5: And it was at at this point Jc the rock
- 5:16Speaker 5: that I thought, you know what, this could be a
- 5:18Speaker 5: six to one or sixty two set, because after we
- 5:20Speaker 5: felt that center was tiring a little bit, that would
- 5:23Speaker 5: he started using this more.
- 5:24Speaker 2: The drafts started working.
- 5:26Speaker 5: But that three to one game, that center almost went
- 5:29Speaker 5: down a double break when he held there. I was like,
- 5:32Speaker 5: oh wait a second, yeah this And then I said
- 5:34Speaker 5: to myself, wouldn't it be something if this somehow finished
- 5:37Speaker 5: in a final set?
- 5:38Speaker 2: Tie brig? How about that is not right there? From
- 5:40Speaker 2: not dead run? And we saw center late there. Like
- 5:43Speaker 2: I say, with the drop shots, he wasn't sliding into
- 5:45Speaker 2: the drop shots. He was running up to it, not
- 5:47Speaker 2: hitting the ball, then sliding out leg the rock. Yeah,
- 5:52Speaker 2: Fred right, it was the drop shot that he got
- 5:55Speaker 2: to that. Actually that kind of changed the momentum. I
- 5:57Speaker 2: felt like in the fifth.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Set billimeters off the ground.
- 6:00Speaker 5: Yeah, the momentum shave a bunch of times in the
- 6:02Speaker 5: fifth set, and that's why I was fitting that it
- 6:05Speaker 5: did go to the breaker centered up center six five
- 6:08Speaker 5: up here.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Wow, in this game, I feel like he had a
- 6:12Speaker 2: fifteen third look and he missed the routine forehand. I
- 6:16Speaker 2: thought that was a big moment in this match. It
- 6:17Speaker 2: looked like he had things that in his control and
- 6:20Speaker 2: he missed the foehand deep and that kind of again
- 6:23Speaker 2: let Carlos scrap and crawl back into this fifth set.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Carlos is scraping and scrapping at that point. He rarely
- 6:29Speaker 3: hit a backhand slices and he comes up with that.
- 6:32Speaker 3: I mean, it was incredible. His coach on his feet
- 6:35Speaker 3: in the breaker, he just starts lighting up the forehand
- 6:37Speaker 3: and that backs up center and said, crazy, how does
- 6:42Speaker 3: he think to do that?
- 6:43Speaker 2: It's insane. He won uped himself about every two and
- 6:46Speaker 2: a half minutes in the fifth set with thoughts like.
- 6:48Speaker 5: That, and then now of routine that he pulls that
- 6:51Speaker 5: off on that point, it was. It was scintillating stuff
- 6:55Speaker 5: in the tie break from Carlos Alter. It was a
- 6:57Speaker 5: fitting in right, brilliant.
- 6:59Speaker 3: It had finished shot with a shot like that, it
- 7:01Speaker 3: couldn't end on an error and it absolutely did.
- 7:04Speaker 2: What a moment.
- 7:04Speaker 3: What sportsmanship throughout the match, both of these guys conceding
- 7:08Speaker 3: line calls to each other. Right. It was incredible.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Carlos now has won the last four Majors, not on
- 7:15Speaker 1: hard courts. He is now five and oh in major finals.
- 7:18Speaker 1: The only one else to start off five and oh Betterer,
- 7:21Speaker 1: who would start off seven and oh.
- 7:23Speaker 2: But this right here total.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Points one left.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Go check out the tonal.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Points one ninety three, one ninety two. At one point
- 7:31Speaker 1: of this match, they had played five hours and ten minutes.
- 7:34Speaker 1: It was two sets, all five games, all forty all.
- 7:38Speaker 2: They keep each.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Other motivated, their neck and neck, they push each other.
- 7:42Speaker 1: It seemed as if their grind and grit exceeded what
- 7:45Speaker 1: their physical limitations even allow. They were playing beyond what
- 7:49Speaker 1: their bodies could handle.
- 7:51Speaker 4: I can relate to Yanik in a couple ways. I
- 7:53Speaker 4: was part of what I think was considering an epic
- 7:56Speaker 4: match nineteen eighty where he came up short again. Bjorn
- 8:00Speaker 4: Boor lost Sat in five sets. Apparently Alcharz is ready.
- 8:05Speaker 4: So so let's question I.
- 8:07Speaker 5: Would have asked, because I think, what you know, We've
- 8:11Speaker 5: known that these two guys have sort of elevated their games,
- 8:14Speaker 5: you know, to separate themselves from the field. But I
- 8:17Speaker 5: think what makes all of us so excited about this
- 8:20Speaker 5: rivalry is because today they showed us more. I mean,
- 8:24Speaker 5: they showed us the determination, the grit, the desire, the
- 8:28Speaker 5: struggles you know, to go through.
- 8:30Speaker 4: And and the will and both of them, both of them.
- 8:33Speaker 5: Showed that Will sin Or what he had to go
- 8:35Speaker 5: through losing those matchboy's still coming back Carlos two sets down.
- 8:38Speaker 5: So we saw some we saw you know, John always
- 8:41Speaker 5: likes to say, you got to find a way to
- 8:43Speaker 5: dig it deeper than you've ever felt you had to go,
- 8:46Speaker 5: you know, to win to be at this level. And
- 8:48Speaker 5: not only do we see the incredible shot making from
- 8:50Speaker 5: these two, but we saw that will. And that's I
- 8:53Speaker 5: think what excites all of us about the.
- 8:55Speaker 1: We were talking during this that Carlos, you know, the
- 8:57Speaker 1: storyline is he'd never come back from down to and
- 9:00Speaker 1: that Sinner had never won that fifth set.
- 9:03Speaker 5: And Sinner has come back from two oh but to
- 9:04Speaker 5: win his first major in Australia.
- 9:07Speaker 1: But Carlos showed us that he could and Sinner showed
- 9:09Speaker 1: us that he had the endurance to go five. The
- 9:12Speaker 1: two things we were worried about, they both prove they
- 9:14Speaker 1: can handle.
- 9:15Speaker 2: No.
- 9:15Speaker 4: I was remarking, I want to just quickly say before
- 9:18Speaker 4: I go and have a beer and Andre takujoin Larta.
- 9:24Speaker 4: When I was saying the Wimbledon final, you know, I
- 9:26Speaker 4: lost that, but it elevated I felt, hopefully the sport
- 9:30Speaker 4: a little bit me individually, and I think it's definitely
- 9:32Speaker 4: gonna elevate Yahick the effort that he put out and
- 9:36Speaker 4: the way he handled it at the end, which is
- 9:38Speaker 4: really harsh. And I've been there. I know what it
- 9:41Speaker 4: feels like to go two sets up. If I wasn't
- 9:44Speaker 4: match point, but I was five points away, so it
- 9:46Speaker 4: was I could taste it. But he's gonna win this,
- 9:49Speaker 4: He's gonna win this thing. I thought I was gonna
- 9:51Speaker 4: win it, but I was sadly mistaken, and it still
- 9:54Speaker 4: sticks with me like this long. You know, I'd come
- 9:57Speaker 4: here and I'm like, did.
- 9:58Speaker 2: It push you afterward?
- 10:00Speaker 1: Did you find that it showed you what you were
- 10:01Speaker 1: even capable of?
- 10:03Speaker 4: It pushed me, but it ultimately he pushed me the
- 10:06Speaker 4: rest of the year and into the next year. But
- 10:08Speaker 4: it didn't should have kept pushing me. And that's what
- 10:10Speaker 4: the difference I believe between the all time greats and
- 10:14Speaker 4: maybe a mere mortal like myself at once we weren't.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Able to take it to that next level.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Well, you know it's it's when I see that it
- 10:21Speaker 4: sort of brings back some couple of dark memories there. So,
- 10:26Speaker 4: but he is the way he persevered and like sort
- 10:29Speaker 4: of found that extra gear a couple times. Is you
- 10:32Speaker 4: know everything that I believed the sports should be about.
- 10:35Speaker 1: It's beautiful, it really was, and hey we got a
- 10:38Speaker 1: defending champion. You said it showed Carlos you know what
- 10:41Speaker 1: to do, and a back to back.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Indeed, listen Alcaaz doing some things pretty phenomenal. Two sets down,
- 10:48Speaker 3: tough to get him down two sets, well, he finds
- 10:51Speaker 3: his way back here. He learned a lot about himself here.
- 10:55Speaker 3: And the third youngest man to hold five majors behind
- 10:59Speaker 3: Borg and the Doll. I'm pretty darn good. This guy
- 11:03Speaker 3: still needs Australian Open to be the youngest. I get
- 11:05Speaker 3: the career Grand Slam right in the open air.
- 11:07Speaker 5: Could argue that it's even more impressive, right because he's
- 11:10Speaker 5: won on three different services.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I don't believe those.
- 11:13Speaker 5: Two other all timer Hall of famers did it as well.
- 11:16Speaker 5: Of course they'll both rough ended up with quite a few.
- 11:19Speaker 4: But he you know, there's there's no there.
- 11:21Speaker 5: Let there be no doubt that the that the mantle
- 11:24Speaker 5: is officially.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I don't think we had a doubt, but I think.
- 11:26Speaker 5: Some fans out there, you know, maybe not hardcore tennis fans,
- 11:30Speaker 5: like okay, like maybe I should start paying attention to
- 11:33Speaker 5: these two guys because it's official, and now it's gonna
- 11:36Speaker 5: be interesting to see. It's up to the rest of
- 11:39Speaker 5: the field to see if anybody can start to really
- 11:43Speaker 5: compete with these guys in Jack.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Draper Juan Fonseka that the eighteen year old from Brazil,
- 11:48Speaker 3: he's got a couple of years probably before he starts
- 11:50Speaker 3: to move into the picture. Draper, I think could be
- 11:52Speaker 3: there very quickly, a semi finalist in the US opened year.
- 11:57Speaker 3: He is, and he's legit. He's got he's got of
- 12:00Speaker 3: the new Rafa forehand, he's six foot four, lefty.
- 12:02Speaker 2: He can bring it.
- 12:03Speaker 3: He's going to be a factor at Wimbledon.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Sam No, he is. And look, these guys have won
- 12:06Speaker 2: the last six majors.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Now, so that the gun went off a year and
- 12:10Speaker 3: a half ago, these guys are already flying down the track.
- 12:12Speaker 2: And the catch we're talking about guys catching them. They've
- 12:14Speaker 2: got some work to do. There's a long there's a
- 12:17Speaker 2: big gap right now between these two, the new two
- 12:19Speaker 2: as you call them, and the fields. It's these thwre
- 12:22Speaker 2: the field that every tournament for the foreseeable future until
- 12:25Speaker 2: we can get someone like Draper or someone else to
- 12:27Speaker 2: consistently get in there and start making not just the
- 12:30Speaker 2: occasional semifinal, but back to back semifinals, back to back quarterback.
- 12:33Speaker 4: You guys are
- 12:34Speaker 3: Box office ladies and gentlemen who doesn't want to go
- 12:37Speaker 3: see them play anywhere in the world.
