- 0:52Speaker 1: Don't forget On Monday, we will have the writers Roundtable
- 0:55Speaker 1: postgame react from Austin and and everything will be a
- 1:01Speaker 1: little clearer in terms of the conference championship games. So
- 1:06Speaker 1: we got that going for us earlier this week. A
- 1:10Speaker 1: is Monday, after coach Elko visited with the media, Athletic
- 1:15Speaker 1: Director trev Alberts came in talked about his new contract,
- 1:19Speaker 1: talked about the program, answered some questions from the media.
- 1:24Speaker 1: We played part of that yesterday. Here is part of
- 1:30Speaker 1: Athletic Director Trev Alberts.
- 1:34Speaker 6: Thinking back to your first year as the AD at Omahon,
- 1:36Speaker 6: Did you ever foresee yourself being at the helm of
- 1:39Speaker 6: such a big program?
- 1:41Speaker 7: No, My wife and I talked about that a little bit.
- 1:45Speaker 7: I don't know what this is year seventeen or eighteen,
- 1:48Speaker 7: but it was two thousand and nine and I got
- 1:50Speaker 7: a phone call from a border Regent member asking me
- 1:53Speaker 7: to consider coming back and serving the University of Nebraska
- 1:57Speaker 7: OMAHOV It's a Division II school at that time with
- 1:59Speaker 7: Division one hockey. I didn't know anything about athletic administration
- 2:02Speaker 7: and clearly wasn't very intelligent because nobody else was interested
- 2:08Speaker 7: in the job. So I'm not sure why I was,
- 2:09Speaker 7: but anyway, just a privilege those twelve years in Omaha.
- 2:14Speaker 7: I learned a ton and it was a wonderful experience,
- 2:17Speaker 7: and then of course we continue learning. But no, I
- 2:23Speaker 7: never I never had part of the plan. Hey, someday
- 2:26Speaker 7: we're going to hope to get to college station and
- 2:28Speaker 7: work with the amazing people we have here at Texas
- 2:31Speaker 7: A and m So it's been a real blessing.
- 2:33Speaker 6: And then does this year's Aggie football team remind you
- 2:35Speaker 6: of any of your Nebraska teams that you were part.
- 2:38Speaker 7: Of, Well, you know, in some respects. You know, when
- 2:41Speaker 7: you look at almost any team that have won championships,
- 2:46Speaker 7: there might have been a game or two where maybe
- 2:50Speaker 7: there were some things that went your way right that
- 2:53Speaker 7: perhaps ordinarily didn't. You know that that happened a couple
- 2:56Speaker 7: of times when I played at Nebraska there was a
- 2:58Speaker 7: game we probably should have lost, the ball bounced the
- 3:01Speaker 7: right way. But more importantly, it's just and it's what
- 3:05Speaker 7: I so appreciate about about Mike. You know, we live
- 3:07Speaker 7: in a society that so results oriented. Hey, we want
- 3:10Speaker 7: to win a national championship in football, Well of course
- 3:13Speaker 7: we do, but nobody wants to talk about the process
- 3:17Speaker 7: and the investment that actually needs to be made to
- 3:19Speaker 7: get that outcome. So we become very outcome focused rather
- 3:23Speaker 7: than the process. Mike doesn't spend a lot of time
- 3:27Speaker 7: thinking about and to be honest, in my time in
- 3:30Speaker 7: playing coach Osborne never talked about winning ever. We never
- 3:34Speaker 7: talked about winning. It was always about how are you practicing?
- 3:39Speaker 7: It was always the little things right, the things that
- 3:41Speaker 7: people And that's again why I have such confidence in
- 3:45Speaker 7: Mike is his focus on those granular details and the
- 3:49Speaker 7: margins are what's going to separate schools going forward. And
- 3:53Speaker 7: there's still a growth process right for our roster and
- 3:55Speaker 7: everything else, but Mike is just really focused on having
- 4:00Speaker 7: a tough, physical football team that wins the line of scrimmage.
- 4:05Speaker 7: And you have to put the football team in tough
- 4:08Speaker 7: situations in practice because guess what if you never go
- 4:11Speaker 7: through it in practice and you get into the game,
- 4:14Speaker 7: how do you respond. So a lot of how you've
- 4:17Speaker 7: seen our team respond that wasn't because of something that
- 4:20Speaker 7: happened at halftime. That was fall camp, that was springball.
- 4:25Speaker 7: And that's the cultural piece that I think Mike has
- 4:28Speaker 7: such a knack for and a feel for that I
- 4:31Speaker 7: think is elite compared to some of his colleagues.
- 4:34Speaker 8: Com a front row on the left side to Ceaze, what's.
- 4:37Speaker 9: The biggest challenge facing Texas A and m athletics And
- 4:40Speaker 9: is that the same challenge you see for college athletics
- 4:44Speaker 9: in general?
- 4:45Speaker 7: Wow, what a great question. It's not your first time
- 4:48Speaker 7: asking questions.
- 4:49Speaker 10: Is it.
- 4:51Speaker 7: Biggest challenge?
- 4:52Speaker 2: You know?
- 4:52Speaker 7: I would say, you know, what I'm going to keep
- 4:55Speaker 7: pushing here is, you know, is for this unity of purpose.
- 4:59Speaker 7: Right at the end of the day, individual either programs, entities,
- 5:05Speaker 7: or other things can have real excellence in and of themselves.
- 5:08Speaker 7: But I think that the programs in the universities that
- 5:11Speaker 7: ultimately go to win championships and multiple championships find a
- 5:15Speaker 7: way to challenge themselves to say it isn't about me.
- 5:19Speaker 7: Let's be part of something bigger than ourselves, and let's
- 5:22Speaker 7: come together to do some uncommon things.
- 5:24Speaker 8: Right.
- 5:25Speaker 7: So, I think the chief benefit of Texas A and
- 5:27Speaker 7: M is our scale. That's how we but how do
- 5:30Speaker 7: you find a way to pull that scale all together
- 5:33Speaker 7: to to be pulling in the same direction. We've made
- 5:36Speaker 7: good progress on that, and the Board of Regents has
- 5:39Speaker 7: been terrifically important and helpful in that. So I would
- 5:43Speaker 7: say I would say that's for Texas A and M.
- 5:46Speaker 7: The biggest challenge more broadly across college athletics is just
- 5:50Speaker 7: the chaos, right, It's just you know, every day you're
- 5:54Speaker 7: going to get up, you're going to read another story.
- 5:56Speaker 7: We're on the one yard line on getting the participation
- 5:58Speaker 7: agreement signed, and do you still feel like we're on
- 6:01Speaker 7: the one yard line, right, So I think at the
- 6:05Speaker 7: end of the day, there's going to be a lot
- 6:06Speaker 7: of noise. Who does a better job of staying focused
- 6:10Speaker 7: on the task at hand. Let the noise be the noise,
- 6:13Speaker 7: don't respond to the noise, stay unified, stay together as
- 6:17Speaker 7: a team, and just keep your head down and work.
- 6:21Speaker 7: We don't need to talk all the time. We just
- 6:23Speaker 7: need to work. Do the fundamental things that lead to
- 6:26Speaker 7: winning in every sport, and don't talk about it. Just
- 6:30Speaker 7: do the work. And I think if we continue staying
- 6:33Speaker 7: focused on that, all this other chaos will be around us.
- 6:37Speaker 7: But Texas A and M, in spite of whatever happens,
- 6:40Speaker 7: I believe is going to be fine.
- 6:43Speaker 8: We'll go back to the third draw on the left side.
- 6:46Speaker 7: So for you, as the ad, what do you believe
- 6:47Speaker 7: we're going to be the qualities needed as Texas A
- 6:50Speaker 7: and M goes and selects their next president in order
- 6:52Speaker 7: to maintain the success of Texas A and M athletics.
- 6:57Speaker 7: Well that's a tough question from the athletic director, but
- 7:00Speaker 7: a good question, you know. I mean, these are really
- 7:04Speaker 7: complex jobs to be presidents of universities today, right, I mean,
- 7:07Speaker 7: when you think about I think about. I think sometimes
- 7:11Speaker 7: my job's a little complex. Well, we're basically a three
- 7:14Speaker 7: hundred million dollar annual enterprise. What if you were leading
- 7:17Speaker 7: a three billion dollar enterprise, right, So the complexities of
- 7:21Speaker 7: running the business of the university. Of course, there's the
- 7:24Speaker 7: politics of the university. There's there's a lot of different things.
- 7:27Speaker 7: So I think again, you know, my belief has always
- 7:30Speaker 7: been in these types of jobs, a servant leader. It's
- 7:33Speaker 7: somebody who sees the opportunity at Texas A and M
- 7:37Speaker 7: of being in the elite university. My goodness, just dive
- 7:42Speaker 7: in a little bit to outside of football eleven and zero.
- 7:45Speaker 7: Just forget athletics for a minute. Look look at our
- 7:48Speaker 7: university in terms of its academic profile, in terms of
- 7:53Speaker 7: the number of people that want to come to school.
- 7:55Speaker 7: Here are our endowment, our research expenditures. I mean this,
- 8:00Speaker 7: this is a university that has been on the move.
- 8:04Speaker 7: I just feel burdened about as a leader of the
- 8:06Speaker 7: athletic department. We need to do our part right because
- 8:10Speaker 7: I believe winning at the highest level and reflecting the
- 8:12Speaker 7: values of Texas A and M through athletics as the
- 8:15Speaker 7: front porch and the brand investment of the institution will
- 8:18Speaker 7: change this place even for the better. So the next
- 8:21Speaker 7: president he or she is going to have the greatest
- 8:25Speaker 7: gift you could ever have to get to be the
- 8:27Speaker 7: president of a place like this. But you have to
- 8:30Speaker 7: be a willing listener. You can't have all the answers.
- 8:34Speaker 7: You have to listen. You have to be collaborative, and
- 8:37Speaker 7: you have to be a servant leader. And I'm really
- 8:39Speaker 7: confident in Chancellor Hager and the border regions that they'll
- 8:43Speaker 7: find a great leader.
- 8:45Speaker 8: We'll go second row on the right side to Brian
- 8:47Speaker 8: to wrap us up.
- 8:48Speaker 9: Sure, we're talking about challenges in athletics right now, and
- 8:50Speaker 9: one of the biggest ones from an administrative standpoint is
- 8:54Speaker 9: donor fatigue will become very real at a certain point.
- 8:57Speaker 9: I mean, it's easy when it's love and to know
- 8:58Speaker 9: money should be rolling in like crazy, but that won't
- 9:01Speaker 9: always be the case. And so how do you think
- 9:03Speaker 9: about revenue generation in this era where theoretically the numbers
- 9:09Speaker 9: should only go up of what it's going to be
- 9:11Speaker 9: required to feel the competitive team, and yet your donor
- 9:15Speaker 9: base is going to be like there's going to come
- 9:17Speaker 9: a point where they throw up their hands.
- 9:18Speaker 7: And go enough, Yeah, no, it's it's a great it's
- 9:21Speaker 7: a it's an absolutely wonderful question, and it's a hard
- 9:23Speaker 7: one because at the end of the day, there is
- 9:25Speaker 7: a cost to all of this, right, So our job
- 9:30Speaker 7: is to do the very best that we can. A first,
- 9:33Speaker 7: to be good stewards of the resources. You know that
- 9:35Speaker 7: the twelfth Man has given us number two. We cannot
- 9:38Speaker 7: create a business strategy on the backs of a our
- 9:41Speaker 7: students or our supporters and the twelfth man in our ticket,
- 9:46Speaker 7: you know, purchasers and donors. And by the way, as
- 9:48Speaker 7: you mentioned, when you think about prior to the house
- 9:51Speaker 7: settlement with all the collectives, we've asked our donors, right,
- 9:54Speaker 7: and so much of what you're seeing in some of
- 9:56Speaker 7: our roster those have been donors that have helped us.
- 9:59Speaker 7: And so the fatigue is real. So our job is
- 10:02Speaker 7: we've got to run a great business. We have to
- 10:04Speaker 7: run a disciplined, accountable business strategy that ultimately leads to
- 10:09Speaker 7: that type of success. And so we'll have to invest
- 10:13Speaker 7: in certain areas that perhaps maybe we haven't before, and
- 10:16Speaker 7: then perhaps we won't be able to invest in some
- 10:18Speaker 7: areas as much as we'd have liked. But I will
- 10:21Speaker 7: tell you what really excites me right now is that
- 10:24Speaker 7: I get to stand in front of every one of
- 10:26Speaker 7: our head coaches and Texas A and M does not
- 10:28Speaker 7: have a strategy that says, well, we're going to tear
- 10:30Speaker 7: our program, so we're only going to invest in football,
- 10:33Speaker 7: and we are trying to create a strategy where every
- 10:37Speaker 7: single one of our programs can win a national championship. Now,
- 10:40Speaker 7: I've been very transparent with our coaches. There could be
- 10:43Speaker 7: a day where maybe that isn't the case that we
- 10:45Speaker 7: can't do that. But today, because of this incredible stadium,
- 10:50Speaker 7: because of him. By the way, how about the twelfth Man,
- 10:55Speaker 7: how about the attendance at Kyle Field this year? That
- 10:58Speaker 7: stuff is real, and I know the product on the
- 11:00Speaker 7: field matters, and it's a big part of it. I
- 11:02Speaker 7: think it's also in the game day presentation how hard
- 11:05Speaker 7: our staff works to make sure that people have a
- 11:07Speaker 7: great game day experience. I just left a meeting prior
- 11:10Speaker 7: to coming here where we all got together. We've got
- 11:12Speaker 7: to thank all the people. You wouldn't imagine how many
- 11:15Speaker 7: people work really hard to make sure that those saturdays
- 11:17Speaker 7: go well. So and then we got to look at
- 11:20Speaker 7: other areas where can we can drive revenue. We need
- 11:23Speaker 7: to drive more revenue and men's basketball right like there's
- 11:26Speaker 7: you look at what Jamie and volleyball done. It'll be
- 11:28Speaker 7: a record for the amount of ticket revenue that the
- 11:31Speaker 7: volleyball is generated this year. And then we've got to
- 11:34Speaker 7: look at creative and entrepreneurial ways to drive more revenue.
- 11:37Speaker 7: Really excited about our partnership with play Flies that gets
- 11:40Speaker 7: going next summer. You know, we're working on some enterprise solutions.
- 11:43Speaker 7: Not able to talk about those today, but I think
- 11:46Speaker 7: there's some opportunities and ideas about how we again monetize
- 11:50Speaker 7: in ways, ideas and stuff that we haven't done previously.
- 11:54Speaker 7: We haven't been forced to in college athletics. So it's
- 11:57Speaker 7: just this really interesting right where we are an athletic
- 12:01Speaker 7: department that is here to support young people to help
- 12:05Speaker 7: them get college degrees. On the other hand, there's a
- 12:08Speaker 7: cost to that and with repshare, you better run a
- 12:12Speaker 7: pretty good business or you're going to be in trouble.
- 12:14Speaker 11: Welcome to the AGGI Football Preview featuring Tony Katalina of
- 12:18Speaker 11: The Austin American Statesman and your host, Schip Howard. The
- 12:22Speaker 11: AGGI Football Preview is presented by Slovacric sausage and one
- 12:26Speaker 11: above pest control.
- 12:30Speaker 1: We're on the Plai's Fund Center phone line with Tony
- 12:33Speaker 1: Catalina of the Austin American Statesman, Aggie's and Longhorns Friday
- 12:38Speaker 1: night in Austin, Tony. When this season started, I don't
- 12:42Speaker 1: know how many of us, if we're honest, thought that
- 12:46Speaker 1: this A and M team would be eleven and oh
- 12:48Speaker 1: going into this game.
- 12:49Speaker 10: Yeah, consider me one of those people who are shocked.
- 12:52Speaker 10: I mean I felt I was more optimistic than many,
- 12:56Speaker 10: and even in that case, I had them going ten
- 12:58Speaker 10: to two, with one of the losses being that Texas.
- 13:00Speaker 10: So yeah, even in my optimistic viewpoint, somebody who looks
- 13:05Speaker 10: at it like on the bright, sunny type of attitude,
- 13:07Speaker 10: I honestly didn't see this. So that's a testament to
- 13:10Speaker 10: Mike Elcho and this team for finding a way.
- 13:13Speaker 1: In your mind, what has been one or two of
- 13:16Speaker 1: the biggest keys that have driven this team this far?
- 13:19Speaker 10: Yeah, I think number one. It starts at quarterback, right.
- 13:22Speaker 10: I think a lot of the questions in the preseason
- 13:24Speaker 10: was what was Marcel Reid's development going to look like
- 13:27Speaker 10: one as a passer, two as a leader. What could
- 13:29Speaker 10: he do, because you felt like he was the engine
- 13:32Speaker 10: that was going to be able to make a lot
- 13:33Speaker 10: of things go on offense. So for him to be
- 13:35Speaker 10: in this Heisman conversation, for him to play quality football
- 13:38Speaker 10: like he has, that's been a huge factor. On the
- 13:41Speaker 10: other side of the ball. It's just this defense kind
- 13:43Speaker 10: of buying into that Mike Elko identity, playing his brand
- 13:46Speaker 10: of football, being able to be so effective on the
- 13:49Speaker 10: money downs, and to kind of couple that with the
- 13:52Speaker 10: quality offensive play and high potent offense and just the
- 13:55Speaker 10: defense that is really opportunistic. It just really was a
- 13:59Speaker 10: really good recipe for a good football team.
- 14:01Speaker 1: You know, when I look coming into this year, I
- 14:07Speaker 1: looked at the offensive line because and I knew they
- 14:09Speaker 1: were veterans, but they weren't great last year. You know,
- 14:13Speaker 1: they had moments, but they weren't consistent at all, and
- 14:18Speaker 1: I thought they're going to have to pick it up.
- 14:20Speaker 1: And they have picked it up absolutely.
- 14:23Speaker 10: I mean, you look at some of the storms they've had,
- 14:26Speaker 10: the weather, right, like, some injuries, some guys coming back,
- 14:28Speaker 10: the way they rotate and try to stay healthy. This
- 14:31Speaker 10: is a veteran group that you know has really good
- 14:33Speaker 10: cohesion and Mike al Co has leaned on the fact
- 14:36Speaker 10: that he thought this was the strength of the team,
- 14:38Speaker 10: and they've lived up to that billing all season long.
- 14:40Speaker 10: Marcel has been clean. He sacks so few many times.
- 14:43Speaker 10: It's really impressive. They've had to work hard, especially with
- 14:47Speaker 10: this passing attack and the way they run the football.
- 14:50Speaker 10: It's just it really doesn't get going about the big
- 14:52Speaker 10: guys up front playing quality football. You know.
- 14:55Speaker 1: The other thing that they have done for the most
- 14:57Speaker 1: part is they've taken care of the football. They've almost
- 15:01Speaker 1: never fumbled the football this season.
- 15:03Speaker 10: Yeah, it's really impressive, right does they say only turnovers
- 15:07Speaker 10: are interceptions and even those aren't a crazy amount of statistics.
- 15:11Speaker 10: So hey, if you're going to score points and you're
- 15:13Speaker 10: not going to turn the football over, you're going to
- 15:15Speaker 10: win football games. Now convert that on defense where you're
- 15:18Speaker 10: stout on third down, and now you're an eleven to
- 15:21Speaker 10: zero football team, but a chance to get into the
- 15:22Speaker 10: conference title game and pretty much a virtual lock for
- 15:25Speaker 10: a college football playoff spot. So all things fired on
- 15:29Speaker 10: all slanders for this team right now.
- 15:31Speaker 1: What are some of the issues that you look at
- 15:35Speaker 1: going into Friday in a game like this, Tony that
- 15:39Speaker 1: a and M needs to win those areas.
- 15:43Speaker 10: Yeah, I would say number one. I think their biggest issue,
- 15:46Speaker 10: even going back to last season was they struggled a
- 15:48Speaker 10: little bit with mobile quarterbacks. And I think arch Manning
- 15:51Speaker 10: is the guy who is talented. He can run the
- 15:52Speaker 10: football obviously. I think he's passing has developed and has
- 15:55Speaker 10: gotten better as the year has gone on. But what
- 15:58Speaker 10: he's always had is his athletic ability to go out
- 16:00Speaker 10: and make plays. If A and M can kind of
- 16:02Speaker 10: corral him, keep him in the pocket, make him have
- 16:05Speaker 10: to go through his reads and his progressions and actually
- 16:07Speaker 10: play football from from the pocket, I think they're in
- 16:09Speaker 10: a good spot, but you know they're if they're not
- 16:13Speaker 10: stout in the run game. And I know Texas doesn't
- 16:15Speaker 10: have a great rushing attest, but if they're not stout
- 16:18Speaker 10: in the run defense, if they're able to let arch
- 16:20Speaker 10: Manning kind of get out and leak out make plays,
- 16:22Speaker 10: that's where they can be in trouble. I think offensively,
- 16:24Speaker 10: A and M's got a big chip on their shoulder
- 16:26Speaker 10: from there, you know, getting you know, skunk last year.
- 16:29Speaker 10: I think that motivation will help them on the offense
- 16:31Speaker 10: side of the ball. If defense comes to play I
- 16:33Speaker 10: think A and M will find a way to win
- 16:34Speaker 10: this game.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Offense hasn't been a big issue so far for this
- 16:38Speaker 1: team this year, not at all.
- 16:40Speaker 10: I mean, thirty points in every game but one. I mean,
- 16:43Speaker 10: they're just a high polling offense. Who have you know,
- 16:45Speaker 10: even when they were down three running back last week,
- 16:48Speaker 10: you let it turn with the Mari Daniels and I
- 16:50Speaker 10: understand the opponent was an FCS opponent, but it's you know,
- 16:53Speaker 10: Ashton Bethel Roman steps up with wide receiver, Isaiah Williams
- 16:56Speaker 10: steps up at wide receiver. They have multiple tight ends
- 16:58Speaker 10: who can make plays across the board. They just got talent,
- 17:02Speaker 10: and I think more talent now than they had at
- 17:04Speaker 10: any point last year in a lot of key spots.
- 17:07Speaker 1: I thought it was interesting with Elko answering the question
- 17:12Speaker 1: this week about the status of I think it was
- 17:18Speaker 1: Ruben Owens and Mario Kraver. His answer was they're awesome.
- 17:24Speaker 10: Yeah, And I think, well, so that's been an upgrade
- 17:26Speaker 10: from last week when I asked him and he said
- 17:28Speaker 10: they were great. Yeah, Now now they're awesome. They were
- 17:31Speaker 10: great last week, they didn't play. I think there's some
- 17:34Speaker 10: obvious gamesmanship there going on. We'll get the report out
- 17:37Speaker 10: obviously ahead of the games, and we'll see what their
- 17:40Speaker 10: status is. But I feel like those are a couple
- 17:42Speaker 10: of guys that A and M could potentially get back.
- 17:45Speaker 10: But yeah, and you know, Michael Coo is gonna play
- 17:48Speaker 10: coy and I think that's right and his power to do. So.
- 17:51Speaker 1: We'll continue with Tony Catalina after this. For one above

- 18:59Speaker 1: We're joined by Tony Catalina normally on Friday's, but we
- 19:03Speaker 1: have a short week this week with Thanksgiving. In the
- 19:06Speaker 1: game on Friday night, Tony, It's very interesting. This Texas
- 19:12Speaker 1: team has played much better at home than they have
- 19:15Speaker 1: on the road. They seem to have gotten their feet
- 19:20Speaker 1: under them offensively, although they haven't played great defensive teams lately,
- 19:25Speaker 1: but they have been much better. What type of game
- 19:29Speaker 1: do you envision Friday night?
- 19:32Speaker 10: I think a motion plays into it right, and whenever
- 19:34Speaker 10: I think about it wrong or right, I think of
- 19:36Speaker 10: motion Titans games up. I don't think you know whatever
- 19:39Speaker 10: A and M's highest total is thirty seven, yeh, I
- 19:41Speaker 10: think they'll be a touch below that. I think whatever
- 19:44Speaker 10: Texas is averaging, they'll be a touch below that, I
- 19:46Speaker 10: think there'll be some early inks. They'll be some you know,
- 19:49Speaker 10: some tight guys playing there. But with that, I anticipate
- 19:53Speaker 10: things will start to loosen up. I think Marcel and
- 19:56Speaker 10: the guys will start to look like themselves. I think
- 19:58Speaker 10: Texas will get comfortable in their home environment. Ultimately, I
- 20:02Speaker 10: do expect it to be a clean football game, but
- 20:04Speaker 10: that you know, emotions change a lot of things, right.
- 20:07Speaker 10: Could it be a lot of intensity? Do we see
- 20:09Speaker 10: some unnecessary penalties? Do we see just you know, some
- 20:12Speaker 10: uncharacteristic things. I leave room for it all because you
- 20:15Speaker 10: just don't know in these rivalry games sometimes.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and in the rivalry games, it seems like everything is magnified.
- 20:22Speaker 1: You have a you know, a turnover, a bad play.
- 20:25Speaker 1: It just seems to be magnified in these kind.
- 20:28Speaker 10: Of games, without a doubt. I mean, you look at
- 20:30Speaker 10: some of the fourth down play calls from last year.
- 20:32Speaker 10: People are still talking about that, right, So A and
- 20:34Speaker 10: M is trying to exercise some demons from last year.
- 20:38Speaker 10: I think Dave've gone and got revenge from everybody they
- 20:40Speaker 10: lost to last year. The last one to do it
- 20:42Speaker 10: for is Texas. So yes, everything in this game you
- 20:46Speaker 10: talk about the pick six is you talk about some
- 20:48Speaker 10: of the plays, you talk about some of the mistakes,
- 20:50Speaker 10: the fumble recovery on the punt that he wasn't able
- 20:52Speaker 10: to score a touchdown on. Just these are plays and
- 20:54Speaker 10: games that you talk about for years and in years
- 20:57Speaker 10: that come. So, yeah, you're absolutely right about the Magnify
- 21:00Speaker 10: glass on this one.
- 21:01Speaker 1: How confident do you think Elko and the coaches are
- 21:05Speaker 1: in the place kicking game?
- 21:08Speaker 10: Not very Yeah, you know, not very. I think that
- 21:11Speaker 10: I put a tweet out mid game, I said, this
- 21:13Speaker 10: is a championship caliber squad who you know, has a
- 21:17Speaker 10: special teams unit that could really burn them when it
- 21:19Speaker 10: matters most like luckily for A and M hasn't been
- 21:22Speaker 10: too too much of that where they've had to rely
- 21:24Speaker 10: on the kicker this year. But from you know, Jared
- 21:27Speaker 10: Zirkle to Randy Bond back to Jared Zirkle, we're too
- 21:30Speaker 10: late in the season. They have too many questions there.
- 21:32Speaker 10: So to answer the question shortly, probably not too too
- 21:35Speaker 10: confident right now.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Do you think as a result of that that will
- 21:40Speaker 1: change how Elko calls, how they call the game on
- 21:45Speaker 1: Friday Night?
- 21:46Speaker 10: I think it should, right. I think you look at
- 21:48Speaker 10: third down and manageables with an idea that you probably
- 21:52Speaker 10: got two downs to get you know, four or five,
- 21:53Speaker 10: six yards, whatever the case may be, and just understanding
- 21:57Speaker 10: anything north of forty yards is probably a dicey position.
- 22:00Speaker 10: So if you know, once you cross the fifty yard line,
- 22:03Speaker 10: I think you're in a four down territory now with
- 22:05Speaker 10: the offense you have, the quarterback you have. And I'm
- 22:07Speaker 10: a big believer in calling client in his ability, I
- 22:10Speaker 10: really do. I know some things have been questioned this year,
- 22:12Speaker 10: but I think he's a smart play caller with those
- 22:15Speaker 10: in that being a real strength to your team. Four
- 22:18Speaker 10: downs is a treat that have for this group. So
- 22:22Speaker 10: I would look at I would change the mentality there,
- 22:24Speaker 10: and ultimately there are going to be some moments where
- 22:26Speaker 10: they're gonna have to kick the football. But I think
- 22:29Speaker 10: you should be more aggressive because of the fact there.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, and if you're looking at field goals beyond
- 22:36Speaker 1: say forty five yards, you know you're looking at the
- 22:43Speaker 1: thirty yard line. Is being crossing the thirty before you
- 22:46Speaker 1: feel like you're in good field goal range?
- 22:50Speaker 10: Right? I mean I remember, excuse me because I don't
- 22:52Speaker 10: remember the game, but I remember the moment Rady Bond
- 22:55Speaker 10: came up three yards short on a forty nine yard
- 22:57Speaker 10: field goal, Like I've never seen that before from an
- 23:00Speaker 10: SEC kicker, So you know, I don't know if it's confidence.
- 23:03Speaker 10: I don't know if it's injury. I don't know what
- 23:05Speaker 10: the kief may be is. But Raindy Bond doesn't look
- 23:07Speaker 10: like he did last year. Jared Zirkle obviously has been
- 23:10Speaker 10: in sparingly this year, and I know he dealt with
- 23:13Speaker 10: an injury at the early start of the season. But yeah,
- 23:15Speaker 10: the special teams, it's a question mark, and you hope
- 23:18Speaker 10: it doesn't ri its ugly head in the biggest moments.
- 23:20Speaker 1: What do you think the score is going to look like, Tony.
- 23:24Speaker 10: I think it'll be close. I think A and M
- 23:27Speaker 10: will cover. I feel like it'll be twenty four to twenty. Okay,
- 23:31Speaker 10: obviously a little less than A and M scored, But
- 23:33Speaker 10: I said I put the emotion, I put the intensity
- 23:35Speaker 10: there to kind of knock it down a little bit.
- 23:37Speaker 10: But I do believe when A and M's mission is
- 23:40Speaker 10: to finish, and this would be the ultimate finish, they
- 23:42Speaker 10: can finish up the regular season, you know, twelve to
- 23:44Speaker 10: zero and beat their biggest rival. I think this is
- 23:47Speaker 10: mission accomplished at least of the regular season.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Here Tony Catalina has joined us most Fridays, this being
- 23:52Speaker 1: a Wednesday of Thanksgiving. I'm sure we will be visiting
- 23:55Speaker 1: again because this season has a ways to go, doesn't it, Tony.

- 26:55Speaker 16: Right now.
- 26:55Speaker 1: We're going to jump out with the players fund center
- 26:57Speaker 1: phone line and visit with author J. Busby. His book
- 27:01Speaker 1: is called Iron in the Blood How the Alabama versus
- 27:04Speaker 1: Auburn rivalry shaped the soul of the South. I think
- 27:10Speaker 1: what we'll do, Jay is go through so many of
- 27:12Speaker 1: the characters is the best way to do it. But
- 27:14Speaker 1: before we get there, it's this has been very unusual
- 27:18Speaker 1: and that this was a game that wasn't played for
- 27:20Speaker 1: about forty years. Am I right about that?
- 27:23Speaker 17: Yeah, it was in the early part of the twentieth century.
- 27:27Speaker 17: Alabama and Auburn had been scofflingd for forever. You know,
- 27:30Speaker 17: basically since the eighteen nineties when they first started, and
- 27:32Speaker 17: then at one point and the early nineteen hundreds, they
- 27:35Speaker 17: got into a dispute over per diem money and who
- 27:39Speaker 17: was going to pay for who and how many players
- 27:41Speaker 17: are going to be allowed to travel. It's the same
- 27:43Speaker 17: stuff that goes on now in terms of backstabbing schools
- 27:47Speaker 17: and backstabbing rivalries. But it was severe enough that they
- 27:50Speaker 17: decided to just take a break and they started playing
- 27:53Speaker 17: Auburn and Georgia and Tennessee and Florida and things like that.
- 27:56Speaker 17: And it wasn't until Alabama's state legislature got involved and said, hey,
- 28:00Speaker 17: you guys start playing again or we're going to take
- 28:03Speaker 17: a hard look at your finances. That prompted them to
- 28:06Speaker 17: get their act back together and get back on the
- 28:07Speaker 17: same field.
- 28:08Speaker 1: You know, that happened here in Texas when A and
- 28:11Speaker 1: M and Texas quit playing, but right, it never amounted
- 28:14Speaker 1: to anything.
- 28:17Speaker 17: Yeah, I mean, it's the rivalries are so much fun,
- 28:19Speaker 17: because that's why and that's why I love this story,
- 28:21Speaker 17: and that's why I love any rivalry, because it's so
- 28:24Speaker 17: much more than what happens on the field. When you
- 28:25Speaker 17: get when you get state officials involved, When you get
- 28:28Speaker 17: get presidents involved, when you get every single person in
- 28:31Speaker 17: the state taking a side on one side or the other,
- 28:33Speaker 17: that's what that's what makes for a great story.
- 28:36Speaker 1: So it's interesting that you write that very early Auburn
- 28:42Speaker 1: had the upper hand in this rivalry.
- 28:44Speaker 17: Yeah, it was. It was. That was one of the
- 28:46Speaker 17: most interesting things that I found over the course of
- 28:49Speaker 17: the research was that Auburn was really the stronger team
- 28:52Speaker 17: early on. I mean, that's you know, just because of
- 28:55Speaker 17: their ability to find players, their ability to coach the
- 28:59Speaker 17: players up. Alabama was a bit of a mess, and
- 29:01Speaker 17: then Auburn, somewhere around nineteen twenty or so, the Auburn
- 29:06Speaker 17: powers that be decided that football was too much of
- 29:08Speaker 17: a negative influence on the students, that it would lead
- 29:10Speaker 17: to the drinking of alcohol and other surprising facts like that,
- 29:15Speaker 17: and Auburn decided to de emphasize football. They cut back
- 29:18Speaker 17: on scholarships, they cut back on funding to the program,
- 29:22Speaker 17: and the result was that Alabama took that ball to
- 29:26Speaker 17: use a terrible punt and iran with it completely. Alabama
- 29:29Speaker 17: began a recruitment effort outside of the state. Alabama started
- 29:33Speaker 17: playing in the Rose Bowl and it opened up a
- 29:35Speaker 17: gap on Auburn that has never been closed since then.
- 29:37Speaker 17: But for a long time. There's a reason why Auburn
- 29:40Speaker 17: claimed those national championships from back in the nineteen tens,
- 29:42Speaker 17: because they could, because they won them. But Auburn kind
- 29:46Speaker 17: of squattered its best opportunity to keep Alabama in check.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Let's start with Shug Jorden. Tell our listeners a little
- 29:55Speaker 1: bit about him.
- 29:56Speaker 17: Yeah, he was a legendary Auburn coach who was raised
- 30:00Speaker 17: in cell, Alabama. Fought in D Day. He was he
- 30:03Speaker 17: was storing the beaches of Normandy as part of the
- 30:05Speaker 17: D Day invasion. Just a truly remarkable man, and he
- 30:09Speaker 17: came to Auburn. He'd he started out at Auburn, he
- 30:11Speaker 17: played there, he was, he went to school there, and
- 30:14Speaker 17: then he coached there. And were it not for Bear Bryant,
- 30:17Speaker 17: he would be a legend the most legendary coach in
- 30:19Speaker 17: the state of Alabama up to up to Nick Saban.
- 30:21Speaker 17: He won there. He had a lot of players that
- 30:24Speaker 17: went on to successful careers there, and he was just
- 30:27Speaker 17: a beloved figure. You know, he was a little bit rumpled,
- 30:29Speaker 17: wore Khakis was always a little bit you know, his
- 30:32Speaker 17: accent was such a it's not should Jordan, It's Jorden
- 30:35Speaker 17: based on the way that that he spoke back in
- 30:37Speaker 17: the day. And so he was the kind of guy
- 30:39Speaker 17: that really fit well with the Auburn family. That's what
- 30:42Speaker 17: Auburn called themselves as the Auburn family. And he sort
- 30:45Speaker 17: of embodied that, you know, he was he was a
- 30:47Speaker 17: sharp coach, but he was also a family sort of fellow.
- 30:51Speaker 17: He embodied the best of what Auburn thought about itself.
- 30:53Speaker 17: And and like I say, were it not for Bear Bryant,
- 30:55Speaker 17: he would be held be one of the legendary coaches
- 30:58Speaker 17: in the game.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Of impact did Pat Dye have on the Auburn program.
- 31:03Speaker 17: Yeah, he really kicked the program into a hired gear,
- 31:07Speaker 17: you know. And and he obviously brought down some investigations
- 31:10Speaker 17: on the Auburn program too. But he you know that
- 31:13Speaker 17: that you could take that a number of different ways.
- 31:14Speaker 17: He put Auburn in the spotlight, and you could you
- 31:16Speaker 17: could take spotlight in a number of different ways. So
- 31:19Speaker 17: he had a lot of people and to this day
- 31:22Speaker 17: that people will swear I was in Auburn just a
- 31:23Speaker 17: few weeks, a few days ago, and they said they
- 31:26Speaker 17: would love to see what Pat Dye could do now
- 31:27Speaker 17: because he could motivate people like no one else. He
- 31:30Speaker 17: learned at the feet of Bear Bryant, and he learned
- 31:32Speaker 17: how to motivate a team. Now, you know, things went
- 31:35Speaker 17: on during his tenure and undeliberately using the passive voice there,
- 31:38Speaker 17: but things went on during his tenure that brought investigators
- 31:42Speaker 17: to Auburn, and as so often happens, Auburn ended up
- 31:45Speaker 17: in a lot of trouble. But Pat Dye still looked
- 31:48Speaker 17: on very fondly as a guy who really put a
- 31:51Speaker 17: lot of steel into Auburn's spine. And that's the kind
- 31:53Speaker 17: of coach that that Honestly, they're looking for it right
- 31:56Speaker 17: now to bring this up to twenty twenty five, they
- 31:57Speaker 17: would love to have a Pat due minus Hall recruiting violence.
- 32:01Speaker 1: Yeah, he was, I don't want to say single handedly,
- 32:05Speaker 1: but he played the biggest role in getting this series
- 32:08Speaker 1: moved to Home and Home, did.
- 32:09Speaker 17: He not, Yes, Yes, he played a huge, huge role.
- 32:12Speaker 17: He did. And the Auburn boosters did. They recognized that
- 32:15Speaker 17: the game was played in Birmingham, Alabama right up until
- 32:18Speaker 17: you know, the nineteen eighties, late nineteen eighties, and Auburn
- 32:22Speaker 17: was and continues to be looked at as a bit
- 32:25Speaker 17: of a little brother and they and they realized that
- 32:27Speaker 17: if they're playing in Birmingham, they're always going to be
- 32:30Speaker 17: out numbered because more it's closer to Tuscaloosa. There's more
- 32:33Speaker 17: Alabama fans in the state than Auburn fans. And they
- 32:36Speaker 17: had this stadium, they had this huge jrden Hair stadium
- 32:39Speaker 17: that could handle the influx of Alabama fans. And Alabama
- 32:43Speaker 17: obviously didn't want to do that. They wanted to keep
- 32:45Speaker 17: it in a spot where they were they had the
- 32:47Speaker 17: numbers regardless of who was the quote unquote home team
- 32:50Speaker 17: any given year. But Pat Dye was a significant influence
- 32:54Speaker 17: in that. Auburn's boosters were a significant influence in that
- 32:57Speaker 17: they and they managed to basically pull the game out
- 32:59Speaker 17: of Birmingham him and play it in Auburn. To word, obviously,
- 33:02Speaker 17: it's what it is to the station in puting this
- 33:04Speaker 17: coming weekend. And yeah, that was a significant moment in
- 33:08Speaker 17: the iron Ball history.
- 33:11Speaker 1: I guess there's no shadow that lingers over this rivalry
- 33:16Speaker 1: and over this state of Alabama, Bama quite like the
- 33:20Speaker 1: guy the Hounds tooth hat. Even with Nick Saban and
- 33:24Speaker 1: the run he had Jay. It is Bear the compelling
- 33:28Speaker 1: figure of this rivalry.
- 33:32Speaker 17: I think so. I think so because of the shadow
- 33:35Speaker 17: that he cast. Now, what's interesting is when you've got
- 33:38Speaker 17: a figure that died in the early nineteen eighties, you know,
- 33:41Speaker 17: and it's there's so many fans that never had any
- 33:43Speaker 17: contact with him, that don't even know what he sounds
- 33:46Speaker 17: like except hearing him on the pregame speakers at Alabama games.
- 33:51Speaker 17: A little bit of an impact, you know, gets lost
- 33:54Speaker 17: with every passing year. It's like it's like Elvis Presley,
- 33:56Speaker 17: you know, unless you were there to hear him live,
- 33:58Speaker 17: unless you were there to see him, I don't quite
- 34:00Speaker 17: understand what's the big deal about him or the Beatles was.
- 34:03Speaker 17: But Maor Bryant was absolutely the most compelling figure in
- 34:07Speaker 17: the entire state and in the entire South for decades
- 34:10Speaker 17: on end. And I think the testament to that is
- 34:12Speaker 17: I talked to a number of players who played for him,
- 34:15Speaker 17: and I mean, to this day, I'm hearing from people
- 34:16Speaker 17: who said, yeah, I played for Bear and it was
- 34:18Speaker 17: the greatest four years of my life, or maybe it
- 34:20Speaker 17: was the toughest four years of my life, but it
- 34:23Speaker 17: still shaped them. These four years that they had under
- 34:25Speaker 17: him when they were eighteen to twenty one. They shaped
- 34:28Speaker 17: their entire life going forward because of this singular figure,
- 34:31Speaker 17: this singular man. He was such a such a powerful presence,
- 34:35Speaker 17: such a charismatic presence. You never want to disappoint him.
- 34:39Speaker 17: You never wanted him to be upset with you, and
- 34:41Speaker 17: see you work your hardest. And those were the kind
- 34:43Speaker 17: of lessons and the kind of character building that carried
- 34:46Speaker 17: people on through the rest of their lives.
- 34:48Speaker 1: And you always say, you don't want to be the
- 34:51Speaker 1: guy who follows the legend. You want to be the
- 34:53Speaker 1: guy who follows the guy. But in this case you
- 34:56Speaker 1: had to be the guy who followed the guy that
- 34:58Speaker 1: followed the guy that followed the guy. They went through
- 34:59Speaker 1: a few coaches.
- 35:00Speaker 17: Right, Yeah, that's that's the thing about that that Alabama fans.
- 35:05Speaker 11: Uh.
- 35:05Speaker 17: But I want to think too hard about is it
- 35:07Speaker 17: was a long, long, long time between the arrival, the departure,
- 35:12Speaker 17: the retirement of Bear Bryant, and the arrival of Nick Saban.
- 35:16Speaker 17: I mean they had one only one and I put
- 35:18Speaker 17: only in the biggest quotes possible, only one championship in
- 35:22Speaker 17: that twenty five year period. But there were some there
- 35:24Speaker 17: were some rough times I mean, you had Alabama coaches
- 35:26Speaker 17: getting arrested for indiscretions, you had Alabama coaches leaving Alabama
- 35:31Speaker 17: to go coach somewhere else. You know, it was a
- 35:34Speaker 17: humiliating time for in Tuscaloosa. And I think that I
- 35:37Speaker 17: don't think they're going to slide back to that level.
- 35:39Speaker 17: But Alabama fans got real spoiled under Nick Saban and
- 35:43Speaker 17: they are they're having to come up and right now
- 35:45Speaker 17: when it realizes that their team is just one of
- 35:48Speaker 17: a bunch of pretty decent ones in the SEC.
- 35:50Speaker 1: At this point, you mentioned the issues that that Pat
- 35:53Speaker 1: Dye had. You know, played within the rules, but Bear
- 35:57Speaker 1: had some pretty serious issues when he was around, didn't he.
- 36:00Speaker 17: He did. He ran into a couple. I mean, he
- 36:03Speaker 17: was a kind of he was a stern task master.
- 36:06Speaker 17: He actually when he was in when he was you know,
- 36:08Speaker 17: all over in his previous stops, he would run into
- 36:11Speaker 17: trouble with people taking a closer look at what he
- 36:13Speaker 17: was doing and how hard he was pushing the players.
- 36:14Speaker 17: And then once he got to Alabama, there was this
- 36:18Speaker 17: presumption that he was playing so tough that he had
- 36:21Speaker 17: to be cheating one way or another. He had some
- 36:23Speaker 17: he had a little bit of an issue here and
- 36:24Speaker 17: there with folks taking a look at how he recruited.
- 36:28Speaker 17: And then he also had some questions about whether he
- 36:31Speaker 17: was he was points shaving and gambling. There was never
- 36:33Speaker 17: any evidence for that, but there were some curious phone
- 36:37Speaker 17: calls that ended up causing investigations. There was one involving
- 36:40Speaker 17: him in a former Georgia head coach. But I go
- 36:43Speaker 17: into great detail about about whether Georgia was given was
- 36:47Speaker 17: giving out. Alabama has secrets. Now, Alabama was so far
- 36:50Speaker 17: above Georgia at that point that they didn't need any help.
- 36:53Speaker 17: But bear you know, like like any other team, when
- 36:56Speaker 17: you get to be so good, people start taking a
- 36:59Speaker 17: closer look at you and they think that if you're
- 37:01Speaker 17: that much better than everybody else, you've got to be cheated.
- 37:04Speaker 17: There's got to be something going on. And so Bryant
- 37:07Speaker 17: had to had to live with that, had to live
- 37:08Speaker 17: with being this perception of him as, if not a
- 37:11Speaker 17: dirty coach, then the coach who certainly scuffed up the
- 37:14Speaker 17: rules a bit.
- 37:16Speaker 1: He yeah, he was. He was on the edge at best.
- 37:20Speaker 1: You look at Auburn and they have a long history, Jay,
- 37:26Speaker 1: do they not of running a foul of NCAA rules.
- 37:31Speaker 17: They do, they do, and I think it comes from
- 37:34Speaker 17: their status. They they Unfortunately, there's there's a there's a
- 37:38Speaker 17: segment of the Auburn fans that are happy kind of
- 37:40Speaker 17: be in the family, and then there's a segment that
- 37:42Speaker 17: look across the state and they see Tuscaloose and they say,
- 37:45Speaker 17: why can't that be us? And so they try and
- 37:48Speaker 17: they try, and they try to keep up, and every
- 37:50Speaker 17: so often they might overreach a bit and they might
- 37:52Speaker 17: end up on the NCAA's radar and they've lost seasons
- 37:56Speaker 17: because of that, They've lost scholarships, they've had all kinds
- 37:59Speaker 17: of penalties. And I think it's because there's a certain
- 38:01Speaker 17: segment of the Auburn fan base, for more more specifically
- 38:04Speaker 17: the Auburn booster base that doesn't want to settle for
- 38:07Speaker 17: being this kind of little brother. You know, they chafe
- 38:11Speaker 17: at that idea, and so you know, they they they
- 38:14Speaker 17: overreached and they get caught.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Is there another university that has a reputation of booster
- 38:23Speaker 1: interference more than Auburn over the years?
- 38:28Speaker 17: Maybe Miami, but probably not. I mean, I think that
- 38:31Speaker 17: I think that it's got to be Auburn, just over
- 38:33Speaker 17: the course of the entire program's history. Uh, you know,
- 38:37Speaker 17: there's just so much of it. And I don't know
- 38:40Speaker 17: exactly why that is. People have explained to me in
- 38:42Speaker 17: different ways. You know, they just they do the old
- 38:44Speaker 17: you know, things are different down here. But then, of
- 38:46Speaker 17: course everybody says that in every college town. Everybody says
- 38:49Speaker 17: that they're different than anybody else. But but Auburn has
- 38:51Speaker 17: a particularly engaged booster base that that pays close attention
- 38:56Speaker 17: to what's going on and literally will have a have
- 38:59Speaker 17: a strong say, if not outright veto power on who
- 39:03Speaker 17: gets to be the next coach. And so that's what
- 39:04Speaker 17: makes this current because that tradition has not ended. The
- 39:08Speaker 17: boosters have a strong voice in Auburn politics. And that's
- 39:11Speaker 17: what's going to make this next head coaching search so
- 39:13Speaker 17: interesting and how that's going to go because Auburn is
- 39:16Speaker 17: in the midst of one of its its real lows.
- 39:19Speaker 17: And I mean, all it will take is a win
- 39:20Speaker 17: on Saturday that changed that. But still over the long term,
- 39:23Speaker 17: Auburn isn't in one of its periodic lulls.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Is there a way Is there a coach that is
- 39:30Speaker 1: strong enough to rain these boosters in or not?
- 39:36Speaker 17: That's the question, isn't it. I mean, that's that's what
- 39:38Speaker 17: Nick Saban literally did when he got to Alabama. He
- 39:40Speaker 17: basically called them together in two thousand and seven and said, hey,
- 39:43Speaker 17: this is my show now. Because the same thing had
- 39:46Speaker 17: kind of happened at Alabama. You had boosters having a
- 39:48Speaker 17: strong voice, and then you had a succession of two
- 39:51Speaker 17: and three year coaches who just were not winning in
- 39:53Speaker 17: any way. And Saban just said, hey, if you you
- 39:55Speaker 17: brought me here, you're paying me all this money, step back,
- 39:58Speaker 17: shut up, and let me work. And and you're it's gonna
- 40:01Speaker 17: require a really strong coach to be able to do that.
- 40:04Speaker 17: This is this is I mean, the Saban quits the
- 40:07Speaker 17: coaching profession because of all the new demands on coaches
- 40:10Speaker 17: these days. I'm not telling you anything you don't already know,
- 40:12Speaker 17: but that's gonna be it's a whole new wrinkle, not
- 40:15Speaker 17: just dealing with the boosters, but dealing with the players.
- 40:17Speaker 17: You've got to make everybody happy, and somebody's always going
- 40:20Speaker 17: to be unhappy. There are coaches out there that can
- 40:22Speaker 17: do it, but but it's gonna it's gonna require a
- 40:25Speaker 17: whole lot more out of them than any coaches had
- 40:27Speaker 17: to deal with before.
- 40:29Speaker 1: Let's talk about a few of the stars over the years. Uh,
- 40:32Speaker 1: you you write about Bart Starr. I've read books about
- 40:35Speaker 1: him before. Very interesting, uh mostly quiet, right, kind of guy,
- 40:42Speaker 1: head down, do the work. But man, what a legacy.
- 40:48Speaker 17: Yeah, absolutely, I mean Alabama had this legacy of quarterbacks
- 40:53Speaker 17: that just ran the gamut that was just amazing. From
- 40:55Speaker 17: Bart's Starr, Joe Namath, It's Joe name was. He's one
- 41:01Speaker 17: of the few that he's become bigger after leaving these
- 41:06Speaker 17: two schools than he was at it and Joe Navid
- 41:09Speaker 17: to Ken Stabler. I mean, you had this this parade
- 41:12Speaker 17: of just incredibly charismatic quarterbacks and and significant quarterbacks and
- 41:16Speaker 17: Bart Star sort of led that charge. And so yeah,
- 41:19Speaker 17: he was he was kind of an odd fit at Alabama,
- 41:22Speaker 17: but he was just so good. I mean, he got
- 41:24Speaker 17: caught in some coaching politics and you know, got benched
- 41:27Speaker 17: at some points and then came through at other points,
- 41:30Speaker 17: and it was a strange time for any kind of player,
- 41:33Speaker 17: any kind of star player. But yeah, he carried himself
- 41:35Speaker 17: with the kind of grace that that a whole lot
- 41:37Speaker 17: of other players would end me.
- 41:39Speaker 1: Yeah, and then you go on the other side, and
- 41:41Speaker 1: you go from Pat Sullivan to Cam Newton.
- 41:44Speaker 17: Yes, yes, I mean you've got Pat Sullivan, who is
- 41:47Speaker 17: the quintessential Auburn man. I mean they just everybody just
- 41:51Speaker 17: loved it. Everybody wished that he was their son, or
- 41:54Speaker 17: their brother, or their boyfriend or their big brother, you know, whatever.
- 41:57Speaker 17: Whatever you want to say about Pat Sullivan, everybody loved him.
- 42:01Speaker 17: And that's not to say that there wasn't the same
- 42:03Speaker 17: feeling about Cam Newton. But Cam absolutely was everything that
- 42:07Speaker 17: Pat Sullivan was not. He was brashed, and he was
- 42:10Speaker 17: he was loud, and he was confident. He was cocky,
- 42:12Speaker 17: and he had no problem saying telling you all of that,
- 42:15Speaker 17: and then he carried through on it. I mean Cam Newton,
- 42:17Speaker 17: the amazing thing about Cam Newton is that he carried
- 42:20Speaker 17: through on every single promise he might be. You can
- 42:23Speaker 17: make an argument that that for that one season, he
- 42:25Speaker 17: was the best college player we've ever seen because he
- 42:28Speaker 17: did everything. If you had any other quarterback on that
- 42:31Speaker 17: twenty ten Auburn team, you know, they wouldn't have been
- 42:34Speaker 17: nearly as successful. So yeah, I mean Cam Newton is
- 42:36Speaker 17: just is tremendous and what he did for Auburn will
- 42:39Speaker 17: not be forgotten. I was there when his number was
- 42:41Speaker 17: retired earlier this season at that stadium. Wow, just just
- 42:44Speaker 17: absolutely lit up. So yeah, that you could not have
- 42:47Speaker 17: two more differing quarterbacks. And it's kind of a testament
- 42:51Speaker 17: to Auburn that it can encompass both of those.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Bearwood said that his biggest mistake ever was running off
- 42:58Speaker 1: Ken Hall the Sugarland Express, the running back from Texas,
- 43:02Speaker 1: But maybe his biggest issue was letting Bo Jackson go
- 43:07Speaker 1: to Auburn.
- 43:09Speaker 17: Yeah. I mean, he told Bo Jackson that he that
- 43:11Speaker 17: he could play defense, and you know, the idea of
- 43:15Speaker 17: telling Bo Jackson that he'd be a good defender, I just,
- 43:17Speaker 17: you know, that just did not sit well with both.
- 43:19Speaker 17: This was it obviously at the very end of Bear's career.
- 43:22Speaker 17: So who knows where that would have gone. Who knows
- 43:24Speaker 17: whether I mean, you kind of think that Bo would
- 43:27Speaker 17: have burst his way into any lineup no matter where
- 43:29Speaker 17: he was, just because he was so phenomenally talented. But yeah,
- 43:33Speaker 17: he didn't even bother giving Alabama the chance to stick
- 43:36Speaker 17: him on the you know, on the bench or you know,
- 43:38Speaker 17: deep on the depth chart. He just went straight over
- 43:40Speaker 17: to Auburn and they basically were the course of his
- 43:43Speaker 17: time there, basically reworked the entire offense to favor him.
- 43:46Speaker 17: And he wasn't perfect. You know, he did have some fumbles,
- 43:48Speaker 17: he did have some notable mistakes, but he was absolutely
- 43:52Speaker 17: electrifying at Auburn, and again, like him, they were they
- 43:56Speaker 17: were incredibly lucky to have one of the best college
- 43:59Speaker 17: players of all time on their roster.
- 44:01Speaker 1: He wasn't much of a practice player, was he.
- 44:05Speaker 17: He did. I mean, he just he had such innate
- 44:08Speaker 17: talent that he didn't feel like he had to practice.
- 44:11Speaker 17: He just, you know, he did nap. He would he
- 44:13Speaker 17: would take it easy. He would he would run at
- 44:15Speaker 17: half speed if he ran it all and then and
- 44:17Speaker 17: then the game would start and he would just just
- 44:20Speaker 17: throw somebody through a brick wall. So it just unguily. Again,
- 44:23Speaker 17: you know, you hate to play that old man card
- 44:25Speaker 17: where it's like, oh, I wish you had seen him,
- 44:26Speaker 17: But wow, I wish that that people had seen this
- 44:29Speaker 17: guy at his peak. Because every every every unbelievable runing
- 44:33Speaker 17: back that you can think of over the last twenty
- 44:35Speaker 17: five years, bow Was was better than them all in
- 44:37Speaker 17: terms of his skill relative to the rest of the
- 44:41Speaker 17: of the field. Now, I don't know how Bow would
- 44:43Speaker 17: have done against you know, say the twenty twenty one
- 44:45Speaker 17: Georgia defense or you know, any kind of defense right now.
- 44:48Speaker 17: But at the time he was so far above him.
- 44:51Speaker 17: It was just a man among boys.
- 44:53Speaker 1: So I don't know if this guy's to poster child
- 44:56Speaker 1: for Alabama Auburn. But we have to talk about Harvard
- 45:00Speaker 1: the Updyke.
- 45:02Speaker 17: Yes, yes, that's a It's a strange thing. Harvey Updyke
- 45:05Speaker 17: was the Alabama super fan who who who would call
- 45:09Speaker 17: into the Fine Bomb Show under the under the name
- 45:12Speaker 17: al from Dadeville, and uh he was an Alabama super fan,
- 45:15Speaker 17: never went to Alabama, but felt a deep kinship with
- 45:18Speaker 17: Bear Bryant, and he was he was such a fan
- 45:21Speaker 17: and it convinced himself so much that that Auburn was
- 45:24Speaker 17: the devil that he went and I said, everyone knows
- 45:26Speaker 17: he poisoned the trees, the Tumors Oaks on Alabia, on
- 45:28Speaker 17: Auburn's campus, and uh, I mean they're they're gorgeous trees.
- 45:31Speaker 17: There were gorgeous trees. The while area is beautiful. If
- 45:34Speaker 17: you've never been to Tomors Corner, it's truly one of
- 45:36Speaker 17: the great college campus spots in America. But he it was.
- 45:40Speaker 17: It was a cruel and evil act and and he
- 45:42Speaker 17: killed these trees and and it was so bad that
- 45:45Speaker 17: Evel Alabama people were like, oh hey, oh, hang on,
- 45:47Speaker 17: hang on, that's a little too far for us. Now.
- 45:49Speaker 17: You know, there are some other Harvard up updykes lurking
- 45:52Speaker 17: out there on theirs of the ball. And then you know,
- 45:54Speaker 17: in every rivalry. But uh, but he was the one
- 45:57Speaker 17: that went through with it, and and it really it
- 46:00Speaker 17: kind of made the rest of America. The funny thing
- 46:03Speaker 17: is the rest of America was like, Wow, that's that's insane,
- 46:06Speaker 17: that's that's crazy. And the sec everyone's like, yeah, that's
- 46:09Speaker 17: I mean, that's college football. It was far, but that's
- 46:11Speaker 17: college football exactly exactly.
- 46:14Speaker 1: So if if I talked to you about the iconic
- 46:18Speaker 1: games over the years, give me two or three that
- 46:21Speaker 1: come to mind.
- 46:22Speaker 17: I mean you obviously start with the kick six. Yes,
- 46:24Speaker 17: you know, no matter what you know, we've we've we've
- 46:27Speaker 17: that's recent enough in all of our memory that we
- 46:29Speaker 17: all remember where we were when we slaughter, when it unfolded,
- 46:31Speaker 17: and we've seen the you know, Auburt's gona win the
- 46:33Speaker 17: football game. We've seen that a million times. You know,
- 46:35Speaker 17: that's all, uh, something that that sticks with us. But
- 46:38Speaker 17: you know Ken Stavers run through the mud back of
- 46:41Speaker 17: the sixties, that punt Bama punt when not album block
- 46:44Speaker 17: to Alabama punts. I mean all these are the kinds
- 46:47Speaker 17: of iconic games that that stick with you. And what's
- 46:50Speaker 17: been interesting is that that there have been a few
- 46:53Speaker 17: of them lately. There was Grave Digger a couple of
- 46:55Speaker 17: years ago, uh fourth and thirty one where Alabama wins
- 46:58Speaker 17: the football game on a fourth and thirty one play.
- 47:00Speaker 17: But these games have tended to break Alabama's away lately,
- 47:03Speaker 17: particularly in Jordenhair Stadium, and that's what that's what makes
- 47:06Speaker 17: this weekend so interesting. Just to bring it all forward
- 47:09Speaker 17: here is is jorden Air Stadium once was a haunted
- 47:13Speaker 17: place and it has lost those ghosts. You know, it
- 47:15Speaker 17: doesn't have those ghosts right now for other teams. There
- 47:18Speaker 17: was a time when teams were terrified to play there
- 47:20Speaker 17: and now for any number of reasons, it's kind of
- 47:23Speaker 17: just another stadium. And that's what makes Auburn fans so upset.
- 47:26Speaker 17: So if they can, if they can recapture a little
- 47:29Speaker 17: bit of that old evil voodoo, if they can, if
- 47:30Speaker 17: they could go and ruin Alabama's season this weekend, which
- 47:34Speaker 17: I know A and M would love. Uh. Then you know,
- 47:37Speaker 17: all of a sudden, you've got you've got a whole
- 47:39Speaker 17: new chapter of this rivalry unfolding going forward.
- 47:43Speaker 1: And it's those kinds of games that make rivalries, is
- 47:47Speaker 1: it not.
- 47:48Speaker 17: Absolutely, that's what you want, a game that both sides
- 47:52Speaker 17: will remember for the next three hundred and sixty four days.
- 47:55Speaker 17: And what makes Alabama Auburn and a number of other
- 47:58Speaker 17: rivalries so great is that you see these people from
- 48:01Speaker 17: the other side. It's not you know, it's not like
