- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody, Welcome to
- 0:25Speaker 1: the Season with Peter Schrager On Peter Strager my host,
- 0:27Speaker 1: Good Morning Fall on the NFL Networks every morning from
- 0:31Speaker 1: eight to ten Eastern and up on the Fox NFL
- 0:36Speaker 1: Kickoff show on Sunday mornings at eleven am Eastern. But
- 0:41Speaker 1: my pride and enjoy right now this podcast, and we've
- 0:43Speaker 1: got a good guest today, Joe McHale's gonna tain us hilarious.
- 0:48Speaker 1: He's also on about sixteen different shows for Fox right now.
- 0:52Speaker 1: We're gonna get mchaelan in a moment. But before we
- 0:55Speaker 1: talk about his career, his thew I want to talk
- 1:01Speaker 1: about the Bears and what went down those twenty four
- 1:06Speaker 1: hours Thursday and Friday and break it down and then
- 1:10Speaker 1: kind of take it from there, all right, So they
- 1:12Speaker 1: lose in historic fashion, crazy, you know, discombobulated play. And
- 1:17Speaker 1: then Mattibraflus was a press conference afterwards, and you could
- 1:19Speaker 1: tell he's still frazzled by the whole thing, and he's like,
- 1:22Speaker 1: I liked what we had. I liked it. So it's
- 1:24Speaker 1: like the third or fourth different press conference they lost
- 1:26Speaker 1: at the end where eber Flus has had some head
- 1:28Speaker 1: scratching stuff, and then we turned the TV off because
- 1:32Speaker 1: that Cowboys Giants game. I don't know. That's when you
- 1:35Speaker 1: eat and then you watch the Packers game at night
- 1:37Speaker 1: and you're like, all right, what's gonna happen tomorrow in Chicago.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Here's my perspective on the whole thing. I'm hosting Good
- 1:44Speaker 1: Morning Football Friday morning, but I got an alert saying
- 1:47Speaker 1: iber Flus is talking to the media at nine am
- 1:50Speaker 1: Central time. Good Morning Football is from eight to ten Eastern,
- 1:53Speaker 1: So as our show is ending, I knew there was
- 1:57Speaker 1: gonna be an eber Flus press conference. I said to
- 2:01Speaker 1: the producers, I said, guys, keep an eye on that.
- 2:05Speaker 1: If they have the press conference, it means he's kept
- 2:09Speaker 1: his job. They're not going to bring him out there
- 2:10Speaker 1: and trot him out there to do a media session
- 2:12Speaker 1: the next day after that loss and then fire him.
- 2:15Speaker 1: But if there's an alert at some point that that
- 2:17Speaker 1: media session has been moved has been pushed back, he's fired.
- 2:21Speaker 1: He's done. So I'm watching the clock like a hawk,
- 2:26Speaker 1: and I'm checking my emails and all my texts to
- 2:28Speaker 1: see if the Matt Eberflus Friday morning media session is
- 2:33Speaker 1: being moved. I have done this for a long time.
- 2:36Speaker 1: They do not trot the coach out there for a
- 2:39Speaker 1: press conference the day after a loss and then fire
- 2:43Speaker 1: him after. It doesn't happen. It's just not a coordinating thing.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Ten Am Eastern happens. Good Morning Football goes off the
- 2:51Speaker 1: air and there's Matt Eberflus on a zoom getting grilled
- 2:54Speaker 1: for twenty minutes by local reporters, taking the bullets and
- 2:57Speaker 1: talking about the game against San Francisco next week. Like, Wow,
- 3:03Speaker 1: the mccaskeys really really do not like firing people mid season.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And Ryan Poles, I don't know if it's a credit
- 3:11Speaker 1: to him or it's a loyalty to Iberflus or what,
- 3:14Speaker 1: but like, if ever there was a window the fans
- 3:17Speaker 1: would understand, you could have fired him, but they didn't,
- 3:19Speaker 1: and he'll coach another week and we'll see what the
- 3:21Speaker 1: story goes. Literally twenty minutes later, I get a text
- 3:25Speaker 1: from a source Iberflus fired. I'm like, what so the
- 3:31Speaker 1: Bears and it's McCaskey. It's Kevin Warren. Kevin Warren was
- 3:40Speaker 1: the big ten commissioner. Then he was the president of
- 3:44Speaker 1: the Vikings, and now he's the president of the Bears,
- 3:48Speaker 1: and the stadium is the big story with the Bears
- 3:50Speaker 1: and Kevin Warren, and that's gonna be his big, you know,
- 3:54Speaker 1: obvious talking and mission for the next few years. And
- 3:58Speaker 1: it's polls the GM. And the way I heard it
- 4:01Speaker 1: was that Iberflus's press conference was scheduled, but they had
- 4:06Speaker 1: at the same time a meeting scheduled with the owner
- 4:10Speaker 1: of the president, and the general manager to discuss the
- 4:13Speaker 1: future of the head coach. They had not decided or
- 4:17Speaker 1: determined the head coach's future or fate before that meeting.
- 4:21Speaker 1: But as they hammered it around and they talked about it,
- 4:23Speaker 1: they said, Okay, we're gonna fire him. My thing is,
- 4:27Speaker 1: can you not move that meeting with the owner, the
- 4:30Speaker 1: president and the GM two hours earlier given the circumstances.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I know, Thanksgiving is a special time, and I know
- 4:39Speaker 1: everyone flew back. I just felt that was unfair to
- 4:43Speaker 1: Matt Eberflus. So they fired Eberflus. And then on Monday morning,
- 4:49Speaker 1: Kevin Warren and Ryan Poles do a press conference and Warren,
- 4:52Speaker 1: who I didn't hear anyone saying that Poles's job was
- 4:55Speaker 1: in jeopardy. It's like, I just want to make it
- 4:57Speaker 1: clear that Ryan Poles, the GM's job is not in
- 5:00Speaker 1: jeopardy and he's our guy. And I'm like, this shirt
- 5:03Speaker 1: sounds like a vote confidence when no one's really asking.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think anyone was wondering whether Ryan
- 5:07Speaker 1: Pouls is gonna keep his job. Ryan Poles drafted Caleb
- 5:10Speaker 1: and made that incredible trade to get not only that pick,
- 5:13Speaker 1: but DJ Moore. And it's the press conference on Monday
- 5:18Speaker 1: was head scratching. Also, fast forward to today and it's Thursday,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and at this job opening, you're gonna hear every name mentioned.
- 5:32Speaker 1: And one of the names that keeps popping up is
- 5:36Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan's name. And let me just lay my cards
- 5:41Speaker 1: on the table. I don't think Kyle Shanahan's being fired
- 5:45Speaker 1: by the San Francisco forty nine ers. I don't. I
- 5:48Speaker 1: don't think John Lynch is being fired by the forty
- 5:50Speaker 1: nine ers. Mike Florio is a reporter for NBC Sports
- 5:54Speaker 1: and Pro Football Talk. Mike Florio over the years has
- 5:58Speaker 1: broken a lot of Niners stories. Mike Florio is very
- 6:02Speaker 1: plugged in and he has done a bit of a
- 6:05Speaker 1: media tour, so I'm on eyes in him on I
- 6:06Speaker 1: think Dan Patrick I saw him on his own show,
- 6:08Speaker 1: being like, I'm not so sure Shanahan's coming back to
- 6:11Speaker 1: San Francisco after this disastrous year. This is the beauty
- 6:18Speaker 1: of coach hiring season. You can get names like Vrabel
- 6:23Speaker 1: attached to the Jets, you can get names like Shanahan
- 6:26Speaker 1: attached to the Bears, and I can't say no to
- 6:29Speaker 1: any of it because I have seen crazier happen. I
- 6:34Speaker 1: would like to think San Francisco isn't gonna just end
- 6:37Speaker 1: this entire thing, and the coach and GM, we're not
- 6:39Speaker 1: gonna flee, and that Shanahan's gonna want to come back
- 6:42Speaker 1: and say let's go for this thing again and let's
- 6:43Speaker 1: try to rebuild based on what a disastrous thing that is.
- 6:47Speaker 1: But like, I'm not out of hand, saying Shanahan to
- 6:50Speaker 1: the Bears is ridiculous. It's unlikely. I would imagine it's
- 6:54Speaker 1: not gonna happen. But this is where we're at and
- 6:58Speaker 1: why the NFL is unlike any other profession. I mean,
- 7:02Speaker 1: Rex Ryan's name was mentioned for the Jets job, and
- 7:05Speaker 1: I couldn't pooh pooh it because I know that wood
- 7:07Speaker 1: he loved Rex and Wood he makes. The hiring Kyle
- 7:11Speaker 1: Shanahan to the Bear sounds absurd. Why would you leave
- 7:13Speaker 1: San Francisco for Chicago? But then you think about New
- 7:16Speaker 1: Beginnings and Caleb Williams and Wow, to take on that
- 7:19Speaker 1: franchise and bring that and that to prominence, Well, I
- 7:22Speaker 1: don't know. Maybe there's a way that he can get
- 7:23Speaker 1: out of San Francisco. I mentioned Marcus Freeman, and I
- 7:28Speaker 1: was the first with that on Sunday's Fox Show for Chicago,
- 7:32Speaker 1: and I will stand behind that. I got a lot
- 7:35Speaker 1: of feedback and also a lot of buzz around that report.
- 7:38Speaker 1: No one had reported it up until that point. He's
- 7:41Speaker 1: the head coach of Notre Dame. I think he might
- 7:44Speaker 1: be a candidate as well, and I don't say that
- 7:47Speaker 1: without knowledge of the situation. So that job is interesting,
- 7:52Speaker 1: Jet's job really interesting. I don't know if anyone's reported
- 7:54Speaker 1: this besides me. I have no indication that Woody Johnson
- 7:58Speaker 1: is actually going to Europe for an ambassador role. From
- 8:02Speaker 1: all I gathered, that job was filled in the UK,
- 8:05Speaker 1: and I have no confirmation or indication that he's taken
- 8:09Speaker 1: another one. What he's got a kid in college, a
- 8:10Speaker 1: kid in high school. I'm not sure what he wants
- 8:13Speaker 1: to go away for four years and be a part
- 8:16Speaker 1: of the Trump administration. That was assumed that he would
- 8:19Speaker 1: go do that, but I don't have any indication of that.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Jet's job is open. Bear's job is open with an asterisk.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I do think there's a way that Thomas Brown, the
- 8:29Speaker 1: offensive coordinator, well really the guy who was recently promoted
- 8:33Speaker 1: as the interim offense corner an internim head coach, could
- 8:36Speaker 1: possibly win games down the stretch, and he's beloved in
- 8:39Speaker 1: that building, and he's really well liked by the players,
- 8:41Speaker 1: Like there's a chance that he could still be a candidate.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I don't think Olbrik's a candidate in New York. And
- 8:46Speaker 1: then you have the Saints job. But there are gonna
- 8:48Speaker 1: be other openings. There will be other ones, and it's
- 8:52Speaker 1: gonna get really interesting to see which names pop up,
- 8:55Speaker 1: who's attached to where. And I said it on Bill
- 8:58Speaker 1: Simmons a couple of weeks ago, who everyone just assumes
- 9:01Speaker 1: Vrabel's getting a job and Belichick's getting a job. Belichick
- 9:04Speaker 1: to the Jaguars sounds like it makes sense, like seod
- 9:07Speaker 1: Con just being like just I don't want to just
- 9:09Speaker 1: just go just do your thing, Vrabel, I don't. I
- 9:13Speaker 1: don't have a team yet. I don't. I don't envision
- 9:17Speaker 1: a world where Rabel's not going to be a head coach.
- 9:20Speaker 1: But there are so many hot coordinators too. So Ben
- 9:22Speaker 1: Johnson's out there, Joe Brady's having an amazing season. Uh
- 9:26Speaker 1: you go through the names. Cliff Kingsbury, what he's done
- 9:28Speaker 1: with Jayden Daniels has been outstanding, and then there's Jesse
- 9:32Speaker 1: Minter out in LA who has had an out incredible year.
- 9:35Speaker 1: And then an older guy, Todd Todd Munkin, who's been
- 9:38Speaker 1: in oc at Georgia and the Ravens and has rebuilt
- 9:40Speaker 1: both offenses and brought them to to great places. So
- 9:44Speaker 1: really fun time of the year for us as fans,
- 9:47Speaker 1: really devastating time of the year for the fired coaches
- 9:50Speaker 1: and for coaches on the hot seat. But uh, Bear's
- 9:53Speaker 1: got interesting and that job is very coveted, even with
- 9:57Speaker 1: a lack of success over the last few years. People
- 9:59Speaker 1: see that logo, people see that fan base, and they
- 10:02Speaker 1: look at a team that is actually really good on paper.
- 10:06Speaker 1: I'd be curious to see how that all plays out
- 10:10Speaker 1: real quick. Great week of football up ahead, some really
- 10:14Speaker 1: good games. I made a comment on Good Morning Football
- 10:18Speaker 1: and I wrote about it for my Fox column. I
- 10:21Speaker 1: believe this is the best Buffalo Bills team we have
- 10:22Speaker 1: ever seen. I say that with confidence. And the nineteen
- 10:27Speaker 1: ninety team went thirteen and three, went eight, you know
- 10:32Speaker 1: at home, and then rattled through the playoffs before losing
- 10:36Speaker 1: to the Giants. On wide right, they won an AFC
- 10:37Speaker 1: championship game fifty one to three against the La Raiders
- 10:41Speaker 1: that year. I'm watching this Bills team. They get better
- 10:45Speaker 1: and better every week. They're getting healthier and healthier. And
- 10:48Speaker 1: last week's victory on Sunday night, I know the Niners
- 10:51Speaker 1: came in, you know, banged up, but like in a
- 10:54Speaker 1: previous year, I think the Bills they don't blow them
- 10:57Speaker 1: out thirty five to ten. I don't think they're doing
- 10:59Speaker 1: snow Angels. And I think allan Engagement included is like
- 11:02Speaker 1: as happy as he ever been. And Aaron wan Koff
- 11:05Speaker 1: and my producer, who is a diehard Bills fan, I'm
- 11:07Speaker 1: not jinxing you. I'm not putting the hoax on this team.
- 11:10Speaker 1: I think in a year where everyone is talking about
- 11:14Speaker 1: Mike Tomlin, Kevin O'Connell. You know, you go through Sean
- 11:20Speaker 1: Payton and I guess who's the other hot name from
- 11:24Speaker 1: Dan Campbell? Like, I think my Coach of the Year
- 11:28Speaker 1: might be Sean McDermott. Considering what they lost and what
- 11:31Speaker 1: they were expected to be missing with Diggs and Gabe
- 11:35Speaker 1: Davis and Hide and Poyer, I might if I had
- 11:39Speaker 1: to vote right now, I might go MVP Josh Allen.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Coach of the Year Sean McDermott. And for someone who
- 11:45Speaker 1: grew up as a Bills fan during those four Super
- 11:47Speaker 1: Bowl losses, I think this might be the best team
- 11:49Speaker 1: they've ever had.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Oh, they can't. They can't defend the run. Yeah, I'm
- 11:52Speaker 2: not getting too excited.
- 11:54Speaker 3: You watch it every week?
- 11:55Speaker 1: What do you think?
- 11:56Speaker 3: I mean?
- 11:57Speaker 2: You know, watching CMC in those first couple of runs,
- 12:01Speaker 2: he was incredible every single time. You know, we lost
- 12:04Speaker 2: to the Ravens. Dereck Henry ran all over us. They
- 12:06Speaker 2: will I also think a little bit. I am trying
- 12:09Speaker 2: not to get my hopes up too much. I just
- 12:12Speaker 2: was on the phone with my dad last night when
- 12:13Speaker 2: for a Walk called him. We were talking about the game.
- 12:16Speaker 2: He stayed up for the entire thing. He very rarely
- 12:19Speaker 2: stays up for the Sunday night game because it's so
- 12:21Speaker 2: late on the East Coast. He stayed up for the
- 12:23Speaker 2: whole thing. He loved it, loved watching it. I'm just,
- 12:26Speaker 2: you know, playing in the in the snow is fun.
- 12:30Speaker 2: It's awesome to see them win. It's awesome to see
- 12:32Speaker 2: that Amari Cooper lateral and Josh you know everyone's oh,
- 12:36Speaker 2: the only quarterback to get a throwing and a receiving touchdown.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Since Brad Johnson.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm just they still have some problems depending.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Listeners are listening this week fourteens that we're at. Yeah,
- 12:51Speaker 1: is this week a classic trap letdown game.
- 12:57Speaker 2: I have a feeling that they will get up for
- 13:01Speaker 2: every game going out because I think they want to
- 13:03Speaker 2: catch Kansas City. I think if they could take that
- 13:07Speaker 2: buy that will mean so much, and so I think
- 13:11Speaker 2: they want to win out, Like, I don't see any
- 13:13Speaker 2: reason why They've got to keep their eye on Detroit
- 13:16Speaker 2: coming up too. So maybe this is a little bit
- 13:18Speaker 2: of a trap, but I don't know. Yeah, I would
- 13:21Speaker 2: love for.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Them to.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Not stumble and get healthy. I mean, get Kean Coleman back,
- 13:28Speaker 2: get Kincaid back like Knox has been playing. Well, Mac
- 13:31Speaker 2: Collins out of nowhere is suddenly like barefoot. Yeah, I
- 13:34Speaker 2: mean yeah, lying down in the snow, shirtless or whatever.
- 13:37Speaker 2: But yeah, it's good. I was so determined at the
- 13:43Speaker 2: beginning of this year to be okay with them having
- 13:46Speaker 2: a rebuilding year and just and just.
- 13:48Speaker 1: They have two losses. They lost when they were all
- 13:50Speaker 1: banged up to the Ravens they got killed, and then
- 13:52Speaker 1: they lost the Texans second. And I think Josh Allen
- 13:54Speaker 1: went like nine to thirty at ACAD and if you
- 13:56Speaker 1: remember it was like Stephan Diggs and him had the
- 13:58Speaker 1: side eye like that Funds like six years ago.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Yeah, and that was when everyone was like, oh, Josh
- 14:02Speaker 2: Allen's turning back into who he was rookie year, and
- 14:06Speaker 2: since then it's been completely different.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Le me P. Can we play a clip from the
- 14:13Speaker 1: NBC broadcast. I want to hear the audio of a
- 14:18Speaker 1: report from Melissa Stark about Khalil Shakir talking about Josh Allen.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Khalil Shakir is ready to run through a wall for
- 14:26Speaker 4: his quarterback.
- 14:27Speaker 3: And you think I'm kidding.
- 14:28Speaker 4: No, he told me that if Josh came to him
- 14:30Speaker 4: and said, grab your shield, and sword. We're going to
- 14:33Speaker 4: battle with no other details. He would fall in line
- 14:36Speaker 4: behind him, no questions asked. Khalil said, when your quarterback
- 14:39Speaker 4: is putting his body on the line every single play,
- 14:42Speaker 4: it makes you want to go above and beyond for him.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Josh, all right, So you.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Threw for a touchdown and received a touchdown on the
- 14:51Speaker 4: same play.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Can you walk us through that.
- 14:53Speaker 5: Yeah, I threw a bad balls. I was worried I
- 14:55Speaker 5: was going to get tipped up in the air pick,
- 14:57Speaker 5: so I was just kind of chasing it. I made
- 14:59Speaker 5: eye contact with Coope. He's a vet, saw me. I
- 15:01Speaker 5: put my hands out, he tossed it to me, and
- 15:02Speaker 5: they had to.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Make a play.
- 15:04Speaker 5: Is that how they score it? I get a passing
- 15:05Speaker 5: end receiving you do. That's pretty cool.
- 15:08Speaker 4: And Chris collins Worth is very excited because he started
- 15:10Speaker 4: you on this fantasy team.
- 15:11Speaker 5: I love that, so did I.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Oh, good to hear it. I love that kind of stuff.
- 15:16Speaker 1: It's so cheesy in a way, like I'm gonna take
- 15:18Speaker 1: my sword and my shield and go fight for this man.
- 15:21Speaker 1: But like, I don't think. Melissa like asked him that question, saying, hey, Khalil,
- 15:26Speaker 1: if you had a sword, and a shield. Would you
- 15:28Speaker 1: go fight that? He's bringing that up himself. So they're
- 15:31Speaker 1: all playing Allan's obviously the man Diggs is not there.
- 15:35Speaker 1: That seems to be auditioned by subtraction personality and whatever
- 15:38Speaker 1: else wise. Uh, right now, if I had to vote,
- 15:43Speaker 1: I think Josh Allen's my MVP and Sean mcdermot's my
- 15:46Speaker 1: coach of the year. All right, let's get to our guest.
- 15:51Speaker 1: I'm so excited to do this because I think he's
- 15:53Speaker 1: hilarious and he's also a smart, knowledgeable fan and also
- 15:56Speaker 1: played college football at a high level. Joel McHale is
- 15:59Speaker 1: up next. Our guest is one of my favorite people
- 16:11Speaker 1: in the world to watch, to text with, to hear
- 16:13Speaker 1: him on podcasts, and then also to see him talk football,
- 16:17Speaker 1: which he does quite often on our show Good Morning Football.
- 16:20Speaker 1: And he's great with no further ado, the Seattle Seahawks
- 16:25Speaker 1: fan in my life, mister Joel McHale, what's up, dude?
- 16:29Speaker 3: Go Hawks, Go Hawks, Go Hawks. Event Hold on, I'll
- 16:35Speaker 3: let me. What do you I'll complete it here.
- 16:38Speaker 1: We're looking, we're looking for memorabilia. What do we have here?
- 16:41Speaker 3: Oh yeah, helmet grow helmet?
- 16:49Speaker 1: Tell me the story of acquiring this helmet. Whose helmet
- 16:51Speaker 1: is it? How'd you get that? And who gifted do this?
- 16:56Speaker 3: I was doing a bit for the Seahawks and I
- 16:59Speaker 3: can't remember what the bit was. And then I was
- 17:02Speaker 3: wearing the helmet and then they said, then I said,
- 17:05Speaker 3: can I have the helmet?
- 17:06Speaker 6: Now?
- 17:06Speaker 3: Went really expensive and I was like, I know, and
- 17:09Speaker 3: then they went, all right, just take the helmet, and
- 17:11Speaker 3: then uh, and so I just carried around the house
- 17:15Speaker 3: like you know, after a game, and my kids are like,
- 17:19Speaker 3: what are you doing. I'm just like, yeah, you know
- 17:21Speaker 3: who it was rough out there, but we we pulled
- 17:24Speaker 3: through guys and yeah. And then you know, when I
- 17:29Speaker 3: football helmet out of context kind of makes you look insane.
- 17:34Speaker 1: It does. I'm gonna quickly, as a Seahawks fan, rapid
- 17:37Speaker 1: fire some Seahawks questions for you. Then we're gonna get
- 17:39Speaker 1: all stuff, but not trivia or anything. Jim Warn, Jip Torn.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Dave Craig.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Where were you when they won the Super Bowl when
- 17:49Speaker 1: it was in Jersey the day before that horrible blizzard?
- 17:53Speaker 2: I was in.
- 17:53Speaker 3: I was at the Super Bowl.
- 17:55Speaker 1: You were there, You're you're at the game.
- 17:57Speaker 3: I was at the game, and uh, my wife and
- 18:00Speaker 3: I went and it was I was it was so
- 18:04Speaker 3: great and I think I've never taken heroin. Where's this going?
- 18:09Speaker 3: Where is this going? Peter? I was like, Oh, this
- 18:13Speaker 3: is what it must feel like. I'm so euphoric. I'm
- 18:18Speaker 3: so happy, and I cried. We were sitting next to
- 18:23Speaker 3: Will Arnett, who, as you know, a famous hockey fan. Yep,
- 18:28Speaker 3: uh and so and he had he was promoting the
- 18:31Speaker 3: Lego Batman movie. So it was this weird group of
- 18:34Speaker 3: people and uh, and he was making fun of me
- 18:38Speaker 3: the whole time. He was like, Joela, looks pretty good, buddy.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Uh.
- 18:44Speaker 3: And I was like, we didn't get called for icing
- 18:46Speaker 3: one and yeah. So I was there. Where were you?
- 18:50Speaker 1: I was there too. I was on the field. I
- 18:52Speaker 1: was working for Fox Super Bowl. I did all the
- 18:54Speaker 1: postgame interviews. And that's the one was interesting because there
- 18:58Speaker 1: was so much build up and then like within two plays,
- 19:01Speaker 1: Peyton Manning spite us, you know, hikes the ball over
- 19:05Speaker 1: the center, hikes it over his head and you're like, oh,
- 19:07Speaker 1: and then it just the Broncos never had a chance.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Yeah. And then Percy Harvin, who had been hurt all.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Year, opens the second half right after Bruno.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Mars do you what do you when that? Because I
- 19:20Speaker 3: made a joke of a prediction. They were like, what
- 19:22Speaker 3: do you think the final score is going to be?
- 19:24Speaker 3: And I said two to four, just because usually I'm like,
- 19:30Speaker 3: usually i'd be like Broncos thirteen, Seahawks two hundred and six,
- 19:35Speaker 3: and but I said two to four. And then the
- 19:39Speaker 3: first play was the safety.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Two. Yeah.
- 19:43Speaker 3: I was like, it's happening and I can't believe it.
- 19:47Speaker 3: And what do you like? Obviously I know all sorts
- 19:50Speaker 3: of people that bet money on football legally or legally
- 19:54Speaker 3: now depending upon what state. But what do you think? What?
- 19:58Speaker 3: What do you think the odds were for the first play?
- 20:02Speaker 3: Like somebody had a bet? Like just like what would
- 20:07Speaker 3: be the Like, okay, if you put down ten bucks
- 20:09Speaker 3: and the first play is a safety?
- 20:12Speaker 1: Aaron, Aaron, We got to producer Aaron here, Aaron, why
- 20:15Speaker 1: don't you google last year's Super Bowl first scoring play
- 20:18Speaker 1: safety and tell me what the odds are. I would
- 20:20Speaker 1: say it's probably one thousand to one.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Yeah right, yeah, like yeah.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Figure that. I'll tell you my story with that. I
- 20:27Speaker 1: was assigned to the Seahawks all week. Fox Sports one
- 20:30Speaker 1: had just launched cable network for our dear friends at Fox.
- 20:32Speaker 1: We Love Hello, Lachlan and the crew, and I was
- 20:36Speaker 1: working for them.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Look, Animal Control on FI was on Fox, I Get
- 20:41Speaker 3: It Kitchen on Fox.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Fox, and I was assigned to that team. And that
- 20:47Speaker 1: was the year that like Marshawn would and talk to
- 20:49Speaker 1: the media and Michael Robinson was doing all the talking
- 20:51Speaker 1: for him, and I was with them at the hotel.
- 20:54Speaker 1: And I could say the hotel now at the time
- 20:55Speaker 1: it was like top secret location, but it was like
- 20:57Speaker 1: the w in Jersey City. Oh I'm sorry, it was
- 21:01Speaker 1: the Weston in Jersey City. And like around that team
- 21:06Speaker 1: after they beat Crabtree and the Niners, they were the
- 21:09Speaker 1: most confident, borderline cocky group of guys, like at no
- 21:13Speaker 1: point did they even think they would lose. That Later
- 21:15Speaker 1: we'd find out there was a fight during the week
- 21:18Speaker 1: involving Golden Tate and and Percy Harvin. I don't even
- 21:21Speaker 1: remember the story, but there was something. It doesn't matter.
- 21:24Speaker 1: They kicked the crap out of Peyton Manning and the
- 21:26Speaker 1: Broncos that day.
- 21:28Speaker 3: It was and I've been on that Monday night football
- 21:31Speaker 3: broadcast between that, which is such a good broadcast. He
- 21:34Speaker 3: his brother and then I brought it up, and I
- 21:37Speaker 3: was like, oh shit, I mean, there were such good
- 21:39Speaker 3: sports and I can't I realize, Oh, this is obviously
- 21:43Speaker 3: like I'm taunting them a little bit. I'm like, I'm
- 21:44Speaker 3: just some fan and I'm like, you were in the game,
- 21:48Speaker 3: and this is like bringing up.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Like legacy stuff like yeah, yeah.
- 21:52Speaker 3: Like oh you were in like you were in this beat.
- 21:55Speaker 3: Like if it were me, it would be like you
- 21:56Speaker 3: got in this big, huge movie and you kind of
- 21:58Speaker 3: it didn't really you know, it didn't happen, you know,
- 22:01Speaker 3: and I would I'd be like, oh, I'm not that
- 22:03Speaker 3: he was hurt and any because he's such a in
- 22:06Speaker 3: such a cool guy. But I'm like, what, why am
- 22:08Speaker 3: I being a dick? Yeah? Yeah, he's the light. And
- 22:14Speaker 3: I was there speaking all right.
- 22:16Speaker 1: So twelve months later, we're in Arizona. Katy Perry's tearing
- 22:19Speaker 1: it up at halftime. Uh was the was the Canadian
- 22:22Speaker 1: Football League wide receiver Chris Matthews has the game of
- 22:25Speaker 1: his life and he's tearing it up and and curse
- 22:28Speaker 1: has the butt catch? Where were you for that whole less?
- 22:31Speaker 3: I was there again with my wife Sarah, standing next
- 22:35Speaker 3: to Meredith Vieira and matt Lower I love it and
- 22:39Speaker 3: and triple h and uh McMahon's daughter. Uh. Yeah. It
- 22:46Speaker 3: was a very again, like an interesting group and it
- 22:52Speaker 3: was obviously the Patriots. And Meredith Vieira is a huge Patriots.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Fan, is she Okay? I didn't know that, yeah.
- 22:59Speaker 3: And it was we we I as confident as I
- 23:05Speaker 3: was the year the year before. I was like, oh
- 23:08Speaker 3: my gosh, we're gonna win this year. After that catch,
- 23:11Speaker 3: I was like, we're gonna win. And then it was
- 23:14Speaker 3: like somebody had tied our shoelaces together. And it was
- 23:21Speaker 3: like my son, who's sixteen now, like whenever we see highlights,
- 23:24Speaker 3: if those come on, he just takes off.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Was he old enough to like appreciate it, because that's
- 23:29Speaker 1: now we're going back ten years now, Like was he
- 23:31Speaker 1: old enough to like be a fan at that point?
- 23:33Speaker 3: So he was six and I think it was enough.
- 23:38Speaker 3: So he had so been indoctrinated by his parents, like
- 23:43Speaker 3: we were some sort of fundamentalist Mormon cult and I yes, So,
- 23:51Speaker 3: I mean you can imagine walking you were probably there,
- 23:55Speaker 3: he's there and walking out with the with you know,
- 23:59Speaker 3: walking out with the crowd. I like just stunned, just absolutely,
- 24:04Speaker 3: I'll never forget as half be as I was. There's
- 24:08Speaker 3: just the stunnedness as the year before it was. It
- 24:12Speaker 3: was not good.
- 24:13Speaker 1: It's a it's a it's a great what if? Because
- 24:15Speaker 1: obviously that game is a horrible loss for the Seahawks
- 24:18Speaker 1: and their fans and they haven't been back to Super
- 24:20Speaker 1: Bowl since, and whatever if they had won two straight
- 24:25Speaker 1: and then you go into the next year and your
- 24:27Speaker 1: rolling looking to be the first team ever to go
- 24:28Speaker 1: win three straight. You don't. Then obviously from that all
- 24:32Speaker 1: the stuff with Russ and the defense and Pete and
- 24:34Speaker 1: it all comes undone. But like, it's one of the
- 24:37Speaker 1: great what is It's not just one game to me,
- 24:39Speaker 1: that one that's not just like, uh all right, it's
- 24:42Speaker 1: it's Nick Foles does a Philly special like this one
- 24:45Speaker 1: that could have been the team of the generation, and
- 24:47Speaker 1: that could have been the team of the decade. And
- 24:48Speaker 1: that kind of just was one super Bowl and then
- 24:51Speaker 1: I lost from the Super Bowl. That's what it was.
- 24:53Speaker 3: We went, Yes, to get there twice, as you know,
- 24:57Speaker 3: to get there at all, and then to get there
- 25:00Speaker 3: twice in two years, Yes, all those things, and it
- 25:04Speaker 3: felt like Nicholas Cage in The weather Man or whatever
- 25:08Speaker 3: that movie is where he imagines this other life and mean, yeah,
- 25:15Speaker 3: so yeah, no I go back and so all yeah.
- 25:19Speaker 3: I mean even like I talked to Gronk because he
- 25:22Speaker 3: was on Animal Control, a very nice man, as we've already,
- 25:27Speaker 3: and he was like, oh, I broke your heart, didn't.
- 25:30Speaker 6: I like, like like I had broken up with someone
- 25:34Speaker 6: and there or they had broken up with me and
- 25:36Speaker 6: they were like, oh I I see it was like
- 25:39Speaker 6: it was was not I wasn't as into the relationship
- 25:41Speaker 6: as you were.
- 25:42Speaker 3: And I understand how hard that is for you now,
- 25:44Speaker 3: And isn't.
- 25:45Speaker 1: It Isn't it chilling when you talk to the players
- 25:47Speaker 1: like it's a fan and they're like like they're so
- 25:50Speaker 1: not affected by it, and it's just like, oh, yeah, no,
- 25:52Speaker 1: that was a part of my career, but like you're like, no,
- 25:54Speaker 1: this is like the best day of my life. And
- 25:56Speaker 1: they're like yeah it was, yeah, that's cool, and we
- 25:58Speaker 1: want a super Bowl. That's good.
- 25:59Speaker 3: And you know he told me when we were shooting
- 26:02Speaker 3: Animal Control, he goes, yeah, I was like because he
- 26:05Speaker 3: we were talking about the past play and everyone's looked
- 26:07Speaker 3: to believe they called that, you know, he said in
- 26:10Speaker 3: the huddle or said like on the sideline, he said Belichick,
- 26:14Speaker 3: And this is why Belichick was brilliant. Belichick said, they
- 26:17Speaker 3: might run something like this, they might try this, and
- 26:21Speaker 3: so it was in the back of the player's brain
- 26:23Speaker 3: so like they might throw a pass here, and then
- 26:25Speaker 3: it happened, and they were like, that's his sort of
- 26:29Speaker 3: his his amazing ability to predict, you know, like what
- 26:34Speaker 3: could happen? So anyway, it was what it was. It
- 26:39Speaker 3: was yeah, bad, bad, bad times. But the fact that
- 26:44Speaker 3: I can even talk about it is really this counseling
- 26:47Speaker 3: session has gone, well.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Yeah, and have you do you have a relationship with
- 26:51Speaker 1: Marshawn or with Russ or with Shirm, Like, do you
- 26:54Speaker 1: have a relationship with those guys from that era?
- 26:56Speaker 3: I text with Russ once in a while, and I
- 26:59Speaker 3: am and everyone's look to believe that good. I'm I
- 27:03Speaker 3: truly am thrilled for him.
- 27:05Speaker 1: Everyone has to be. There's no way his career could
- 27:07Speaker 1: end the way it did in Denver. That's not cool.
- 27:10Speaker 3: No, And he and his like he's the night like
- 27:15Speaker 3: that dude went to the Seattle Children's Hospital every single
- 27:19Speaker 3: piece and was just so and uh, I don't I've
- 27:24Speaker 3: done a couple of things with Sherman. I'm going on
- 27:27Speaker 3: Marjahn's podcast next week, I believe. And uh, there was
- 27:32Speaker 3: nothing funnier than when he wasn't answering questions and then
- 27:35Speaker 3: he realized he had to say something or he'd get fine,
- 27:38Speaker 3: and he would just go uh huh. And then there
- 27:42Speaker 3: would be posters in Seattle of him like looking off
- 27:45Speaker 3: into the distance and it just said yep, and they
- 27:50Speaker 3: were so funny. Oh yeah he was, and he was
- 27:54Speaker 3: really And you can tell when players are cool to kids,
- 27:57Speaker 3: you can like there, they were always being with my kids.
- 28:00Speaker 3: So that it went along with.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Let's go back to your childhood. Obviously grew up in
- 28:14Speaker 1: Washington State and you were in theater as a high school. Yeah, okay,
- 28:20Speaker 1: so go on tell me and then you.
- 28:22Speaker 3: I was, I was such a bad student, and uh,
- 28:26Speaker 3: the only thing I was good at was chasing a ball.
- 28:30Speaker 3: And like, so I was like a golden retriever of
- 28:32Speaker 3: a human being because of my ADHD and my dyslexia.
- 28:36Speaker 3: So I was just like ball and I would run
- 28:39Speaker 3: after ball. So I played tons of sports and then
- 28:43Speaker 3: I did a couple of plays and I was like, oh,
- 28:45Speaker 3: this is really fun if I can just kind of
- 28:48Speaker 3: because I just thought sports and theater they were kind
- 28:51Speaker 3: of these like people didn't take them.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Oil and water dude, like totally they they really there
- 28:57Speaker 1: was a very I mean, obviously we've had uh, you know,
- 29:00Speaker 1: the guy who played Hunter, and you've had Jim Brown
- 29:03Speaker 1: like there's been, there's been.
- 29:06Speaker 3: I've got a professional sports ability the way they did.
- 29:12Speaker 3: Is Fred Dryer still around?
- 29:13Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 29:14Speaker 1: I love spread Dryer.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Aaron Wang Kaufman. Look up Fred Dryer.
- 29:18Speaker 1: And I'm still waiting on that safety odds question.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Yeah, what what kind of are you doing this?
- 29:23Speaker 2: I put the safety odds in the chat?
- 29:26Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, it just looks like you're a band
- 29:32Speaker 3: member from Weezer.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Yeah, totally. You look like Brian Bell from Weezer. How's
- 29:37Speaker 1: that reference? Everyone goes Rivers Cuomo, I go the bassist.
- 29:41Speaker 2: I already forgot that. You asked me about Fred Dryer too,
- 29:44Speaker 2: So at this point you're not getting that information, but
- 29:46Speaker 2: I got you the safety information.
- 29:48Speaker 1: It's with us.
- 29:51Speaker 3: I have a chat. Yeah.
- 29:54Speaker 1: The chat says odds for a safety in the Super Bowl,
- 29:56Speaker 1: we're plus twelve sixty odds for safety is a first score?
- 30:00Speaker 1: Were plus four thousand. Wow, that's good.
- 30:04Speaker 2: And Fred still living in Los Angeles and he has
- 30:07Speaker 2: a production company.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Okay, Joe, should we do dinner with Fred Dryer next
- 30:11Speaker 1: time I'm out in La.
- 30:13Speaker 3: Do you think he's going to be mad that I
- 30:14Speaker 3: thought he was dead?
- 30:16Speaker 1: No, I thought he might have been dead too. We
- 30:17Speaker 1: don't hear much from Fred Dryer.
- 30:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, he's been retired for thirty years now,
- 30:22Speaker 3: and Hunter.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Is not exactly getting your reboot these days.
- 30:25Speaker 2: If you get dinner with Fred Dryer, he has excluded
- 30:28Speaker 2: red meat from his diet. So just keep that you're
- 30:30Speaker 2: not taking the mistakes.
- 30:31Speaker 3: All right, Good, the dinner is off. Dinner is off.
- 30:38Speaker 1: We'll take Richard Dean Anderson instead.
- 30:41Speaker 3: Richard Who I mean? I guess Joe Namath had a
- 30:44Speaker 3: pretty storied acting career for a what was it Nameth?
- 30:48Speaker 1: Yeah name, it was in things he was in the
- 30:50Speaker 1: more commercials and talk shows. I mean, there's a long
- 30:53Speaker 1: history of uh what was his name, the guy who
- 30:59Speaker 1: was on Mister Belvedere, what was his name?
- 31:02Speaker 3: Oh?
- 31:02Speaker 1: Yes, well this is Alex Karras.
- 31:06Speaker 3: Yeah, and father father Murphy, Uh, you know, from a
- 31:13Speaker 3: little house in the prairie. What's Merlin Olson?
- 31:17Speaker 1: One of the fearsome foursome a.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Very good football player. See I didn't have the athletic
- 31:22Speaker 3: I was good, but not nothing. You know, I was
- 31:27Speaker 3: never that level.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Okay, So what plays do you remember? I like the
- 31:30Speaker 1: plays first. What plays were you in?
- 31:33Speaker 3: Oh? The first play I was ever in was in
- 31:35Speaker 3: hadd And Field, New Jersey. I was raised in Seattle,
- 31:38Speaker 3: but we lived for two years in New Jersey, and uh,
- 31:41Speaker 3: this was the play and I'm not kidding it's it
- 31:44Speaker 3: was a Disney Uh, the theatrical adaptation of the ride
- 31:50Speaker 3: It's a Small World. So again, that's how the indoctrination,
- 31:55Speaker 3: how early it began was we we did It was
- 31:58Speaker 3: like a play in a book. And then they were like,
- 32:02Speaker 3: you're gonna be wearing later hosen. Yeah yeah. And I
- 32:06Speaker 3: was like, and then you're a snake charmer and it's
- 32:10Speaker 3: I'm sure I can't imagine how culturally insensitive it is.
- 32:14Speaker 1: I'm sure it's it's it's been canceled twenty years ago.
- 32:18Speaker 1: My question is is that like an original or is
- 32:20Speaker 1: that something that other high schools were probably doing or
- 32:23Speaker 1: did your theater teacher say I'm whipping up one bay.
- 32:26Speaker 3: I'm saying second grade that was this is I don't know,
- 32:31Speaker 3: I don't know how yeah, no, no, yeah. In high
- 32:33Speaker 3: school we were already Oh in high school, we felt
- 32:37Speaker 3: we were doing important work. Yeah, we were like we're
- 32:42Speaker 3: doing waiting for good do, but this time we're skipping
- 32:47Speaker 3: every other word. And I did ibsen in college. Look
- 32:54Speaker 3: at our Baron Wang Kaufman, a lady from the sea
- 32:58Speaker 3: running an exciting play go rid of dolls house.
- 33:01Speaker 1: It's a real, real happy one.
- 33:04Speaker 3: So I was good at that and terrible at school.
- 33:09Speaker 3: And uh so my mom, who was a newspaper editor,
- 33:13Speaker 3: two of her three sons were full dyslexics, which was
- 33:16Speaker 3: a real joke from God, which was like, you have
- 33:20Speaker 3: someone who is so good at grammar and spelling and arrangement,
- 33:24Speaker 3: and then you have this yea who. It really accentuates
- 33:28Speaker 3: it when you're wearing a football helmet, and uh you
- 33:31Speaker 3: have this ya who and who. Yeah. So I I
- 33:35Speaker 3: kind of did that through great. Then I moved to Seattle,
- 33:38Speaker 3: and I did all the sports I could, and uh
- 33:42Speaker 3: then I just kept doing theater with these two friends
- 33:44Speaker 3: of mine, Dominic, our three friends Dominic Delao, Ethan Sandler,
- 33:48Speaker 3: and John Atkins, who are all uh two of those
- 33:51Speaker 3: three guys are are in the business. One of the actors, Yeah,
- 33:56Speaker 3: one of them is, he's Ethan's gonna be on American
- 33:59Speaker 3: Horror Story. And John Yeah, and John is a very
- 34:04Speaker 3: prolific musician. He was in a band called and six
- 34:06Speaker 3: four Hero that did opened for Modest Mouse for years
- 34:10Speaker 3: and years and years and if you look up them,
- 34:12Speaker 3: they're a storied Seattle band. And then, uh, Dominic Delo
- 34:16Speaker 3: played man Kiny on the Suit for twelve years. Uh,
- 34:21Speaker 3: so we're it's going He moved back to Seattle, so
- 34:23Speaker 3: he kind of retired, but I I would hire him
- 34:26Speaker 3: in a second if you would do it. And uh,
- 34:29Speaker 3: but so yeah, we did. We all did theater and
- 34:31Speaker 3: the two of the three of us did. Uh, two
- 34:33Speaker 3: of the four, three of the four of the sports.
- 34:36Speaker 3: Ethan was the captain of our of the Mercer Island
- 34:39Speaker 3: freshman football team, like legit.
- 34:42Speaker 1: So then you were you were doing both. But then,
- 34:45Speaker 1: I mean, I see these footage, these pictures of you
- 34:48Speaker 1: as a tight end wearing a University of Washington jersey
- 34:51Speaker 1: in front of the Rose Bowl and you're jacked and
- 34:53Speaker 1: you're on the actual rose ball team. So how did
- 34:55Speaker 1: you make the leap from high school to like playing
- 34:58Speaker 1: at Washington. That's legit.
- 35:00Speaker 3: I tricked as I I just tricked everybody all the time. Uh,
- 35:04Speaker 3: just like acting.
- 35:05Speaker 4: No.
- 35:06Speaker 3: Well, Don James was our coach and had a very
- 35:08Speaker 3: active well, you know, one of the greatest coaches in
- 35:11Speaker 3: the Husky history, and he was he had a very
- 35:16Speaker 3: active walk on program which he wanted fresh blood to
- 35:20Speaker 3: always be there, to always be pushing the scholarship players,
- 35:25Speaker 3: and it kept fresh meat and cannon fodder firing at them.
- 35:30Speaker 3: And then you know, there was some real gems in
- 35:33Speaker 3: that like John Fiala, who became the captain of the
- 35:37Speaker 3: Steelers way back when he was a walk on and anyway,
- 35:41Speaker 3: so I was a walk on, but I just would
- 35:44Speaker 3: nail skit night. I mean like they were like that.
- 35:51Speaker 3: You were funny who was on that.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Who was on that Washington team? Because I mean Ernie Cronwell, right,
- 35:56Speaker 1: was on that team.
- 35:57Speaker 3: Conwell was, Yes, he went on to the Rams of
- 36:01Speaker 3: Saint Louis and Mark Brunell who storied quarterback. Damon Heward
- 36:06Speaker 3: was on that team. Dave Hoffman who was an All
- 36:10Speaker 3: American linebacker, his brother Steve Hoffman. Lincoln Kennedy I came
- 36:15Speaker 3: in at right after Steve MPMan.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Yeah, number one overall pick.
- 36:19Speaker 3: Yeah, Mario Bailey the receiver of course, Napoleon Kaufman who
- 36:24Speaker 3: went to the Raiders and did well and then retired early.
- 36:28Speaker 3: There was Let's lawyer Malloy was on that team.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Bro Y are legends and like when you when you
- 36:35Speaker 1: show up on the soup are they like what the like?
- 36:38Speaker 1: Did they or did you? Guys keep into like that's
- 36:41Speaker 1: incredible that you were with all these guys and then
- 36:42Speaker 1: you get one of the most coveted jobs like in comedy.
- 36:45Speaker 3: Well, I think there were more. If it were me,
- 36:50Speaker 3: I would be more confused and or they would be like,
- 36:53Speaker 3: well that's about right for that guy. Okay, it wasn't
- 36:56Speaker 3: like it wasn't he was like it was like showtime
- 37:00Speaker 3: when I walked on the football field and I'm all
- 37:03Speaker 3: taped uff, but I've got the stuff under my eyes
- 37:06Speaker 3: ready to go. There was more. I was on the
- 37:08Speaker 3: Scout offense, which would play against you know, the the
- 37:13Speaker 3: best players in college football defense at the time, So
- 37:17Speaker 3: I think they were when I talk to them now,
- 37:20Speaker 3: like because I am friends with Dave Hoffman and Damon
- 37:22Speaker 3: Hewart and Mark Brunner also was on that team and Ernie.
- 37:27Speaker 3: They both worked for the NFL. I think Bruner works
- 37:31Speaker 3: for the Steelers, I think, And uh, so they're they're
- 37:35Speaker 3: very nice and and very cool. I'm actually gonna see
- 37:38Speaker 3: Damon Hubert tomorrow. And so yeah, no, believe me, if
- 37:43Speaker 3: you had said that that this is how it would
- 37:45Speaker 3: work out, I would be like this that I don't
- 37:47Speaker 3: know like that the fact that they like they started
- 37:50Speaker 3: giving Oh, DeMarco Farr was on that team.
- 37:55Speaker 1: And Ernie last week because they honored the ninety nine
- 37:57Speaker 1: Rams at halftime of the Rams versus Eagles game.
- 38:02Speaker 3: That's in that so and it's so they Yeah, they
- 38:07Speaker 3: were extremely nice and I think ESPN or was it
- 38:11Speaker 3: ESPN there we was this or maybe a Sports Illustrated
- 38:14Speaker 3: did these things? These things called like were they actually good?
- 38:18Speaker 3: And they were very diplomatic about how they answered it.
- 38:21Speaker 1: It was very talking about like.
- 38:24Speaker 3: They were like, he was a very nice guy and
- 38:26Speaker 3: very fun don't think. I don't know if that was you.
- 38:31Speaker 3: I was like, yeah, that's what people are known for,
- 38:34Speaker 3: you know.
- 38:36Speaker 1: He was funny.
- 38:38Speaker 3: Yeah, it wasn't like his speed in his hands were incredible.
- 38:41Speaker 3: He was nobody had better like like on field intelligence. No, no, no,
- 38:46Speaker 3: he just he had a really good touchdown routine.
- 38:50Speaker 1: All right, you know, I geek out on the comedy stuff.
- 38:52Speaker 1: So you go from college to this then commercials. I
- 38:56Speaker 1: want to say, if I remember listening to an interview
- 38:58Speaker 1: on four. But then you get this incredible opportunity to
- 39:02Speaker 1: take over one of the you know, the hallmarks of
- 39:05Speaker 1: the network, but also one of the great shows of
- 39:07Speaker 1: the nineties, the Soup, which was Talk Sup originally take
- 39:10Speaker 1: us through. How did that even come to be?
- 39:14Speaker 3: I well, I lived in I got married in Seattle,
- 39:17Speaker 3: and lived in Seattle as an actor, and I'm my
- 39:21Speaker 3: wife is still agreeing to be married to me, thank you, Sarah,
- 39:24Speaker 3: And it's been thirty years. What the hell is together? Thirty?
- 39:31Speaker 3: But I got on a show there, well in Seattle
- 39:34Speaker 3: called Almost Live right out of college, which started like
- 39:38Speaker 3: Bill nya science guy's career. It was a locally produced
- 39:42Speaker 3: catch comedy show. And I was on there and kind
- 39:45Speaker 3: of learned how to be bad as not bad. But
- 39:48Speaker 3: I was like so scared and intimidates. Yeah, and they
- 39:53Speaker 3: were so nice about kind of taking care of me
- 39:56Speaker 3: and letting me screw up teleprompter because I was so
- 39:59Speaker 3: dyslexic and nervous. And then I went to graduate school
- 40:03Speaker 3: for acting in Seattle at the University of Washington Go
- 40:06Speaker 3: and then we moved to LA and I said to
- 40:09Speaker 3: my wife, just give me five years to try and
- 40:14Speaker 3: make this work. And that's couldn't get an agent. I
- 40:18Speaker 3: couldn't get an agent that would send me on television auditions,
- 40:21Speaker 3: but I could get I got a commercial agent AKA,
- 40:24Speaker 3: which is a great agency here, and they started sending
- 40:28Speaker 3: me out of commercials and that started working. And then
- 40:31Speaker 3: this woman named Annie Roberts who just finished casting like
- 40:34Speaker 3: retired from E recently and now works for Netflix. She
- 40:39Speaker 3: saw me in commercials and would bring me into E
- 40:41Speaker 3: things like one hundred and one Celebrity Oops and which
- 40:45Speaker 3: were kind of like best week ever. This is for
- 40:48Speaker 3: those of you young kids listening, go look it up.
- 40:52Speaker 3: And then she said, you want to audition for this.
- 40:55Speaker 3: This it's the new version of talk soup where's not
- 41:00Speaker 3: And they were like, we're not gonna call it that,
- 41:02Speaker 3: but you're we're gonna make fun of reality.
- 41:05Speaker 1: TV, right, and it was blowing up like this is
- 41:07Speaker 1: because they used to be toxic, would do the daytime
- 41:09Speaker 1: talk shows. Yes, show was we're gonna make fun of
- 41:12Speaker 1: Flavor Flave and we're gonna make fun of.
- 41:14Speaker 3: Joe Millionaire yep, yeah, and uh, Survivor like these there
- 41:19Speaker 3: was these like Survivor big shows and then there's Flavor
- 41:21Speaker 3: Flav who became a huge and then like Whitney Houston
- 41:25Speaker 3: of course, and the real world was still going and
- 41:28Speaker 3: it was still and then the real world was figuring
- 41:31Speaker 3: out just put insane people on and there it was
- 41:36Speaker 3: this open frontier and it was the We had perfect
- 41:40Speaker 3: timing and kind of hitting that because there was like
- 41:43Speaker 3: RuPaul's Drag Race was the dirtiest show on television, and
- 41:47Speaker 3: there was things we couldn't even show and there I
- 41:49Speaker 3: was like, they're on regular cable, why can't we do that?
- 41:51Speaker 3: And yeah, they were like, we just can't and uh
- 41:53Speaker 3: and then we then they made fun They let us
- 41:55Speaker 3: make fun of the Kardashians who had just started on E.
- 41:58Speaker 3: And it was this tiny little show on E and
- 42:01Speaker 3: it obviously it worked out and uh and so it
- 42:06Speaker 3: was this wonderful open frontier of and nobody watched the
- 42:10Speaker 3: show for a year and Ted Harbert, who was the president,
- 42:15Speaker 3: liked the show, so he kept it on. So we
- 42:17Speaker 3: just crowned and it was I was so lucky because
- 42:21Speaker 3: I got used to say the reading teleprompter and doing
- 42:25Speaker 3: what I know, they're just kind of telling jokes. I
- 42:27Speaker 3: was like, I don't know, we'll try this one and yeah, boy.
- 42:32Speaker 3: And that was five years in or four years in.
- 42:34Speaker 1: And so Annie Roberts, who's the executive you give credit to,
- 42:38Speaker 1: she watched your tapes from the scene comedy or the commercials.
- 42:43Speaker 3: She saw me on commercials. I know, yeah, I didn't
- 42:46Speaker 3: have any I don't have any tape, but nobody cared.
- 42:51Speaker 1: But I would imagine the job like everyone in the groundlings,
- 42:54Speaker 1: everyone in Second City. I'm sure everyone was trying out
- 42:56Speaker 1: for this.
- 42:58Speaker 3: I know the two. I know who it was narrowed
- 43:02Speaker 3: down to, and one of them was a friend of
- 43:05Speaker 3: mine named Matt Corboy, who is who is super funny,
- 43:09Speaker 3: and I to this day I'm like, why didn't he
- 43:12Speaker 3: get it?
- 43:12Speaker 1: He's yeah, he's.
- 43:13Speaker 3: Great, and and so we yes, I think that there
- 43:18Speaker 3: was a very long there was a he was it
- 43:21Speaker 3: took like six months to get the job. And that
- 43:23Speaker 3: wasn't because they were seeing the world. It was just
- 43:26Speaker 3: because he didn't. They were kind of, you know, very nonchalant.
- 43:30Speaker 3: And then when they put us on and saw how
- 43:32Speaker 3: cheap it was. At first, They're like, ten, there was
- 43:35Speaker 3: a time kids, when programming the actual day really mattered.
- 43:39Speaker 3: In ten o'clock on a Friday night was a desert.
- 43:42Speaker 3: It was a dead zone.
- 43:45Speaker 1: On ABC with you downs.
- 43:47Speaker 3: Yeah, and they were like, hey, you beat a rerun
- 43:50Speaker 3: of Sex in the City, and I'd be like, thank you,
- 43:54Speaker 3: thank you so much and uh. And then it slowly
- 43:58Speaker 3: started started working. And that was twelve years of my life.
- 44:03Speaker 1: Twelve years. And I've been doing Good Morning Football for
- 44:05Speaker 1: nine years and I like it's yesterday over those twelve years.
- 44:10Speaker 3: Obviously that and that's why Good Morning Football. So, I mean,
- 44:13Speaker 3: you got, you know, the combination of you guys and
- 44:16Speaker 3: the comedy, the fact that you guys put so much
- 44:18Speaker 3: humor into it, and it's so important because boy is
- 44:24Speaker 3: something there. People can rattle off all the facts and
- 44:28Speaker 3: everything that happened, but you can't intelligently make fun of
- 44:32Speaker 3: it and be be funny. It's who cares.
- 44:37Speaker 1: It also helps that Kyle and I can rattle off
- 44:39Speaker 1: Mother love Bone references just like we do Eric Dickerson references.
- 44:43Speaker 1: We go on culture. It's like you go sports and
- 44:46Speaker 1: you're a.
- 44:46Speaker 3: Lot better than me and you know, mother love.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Bone, that's the attle. Let's go all right. So then
- 44:52Speaker 1: the Soup obviously is this huge hit and then you're
- 44:55Speaker 1: on one of the biggest comedies of the era in community.
- 44:59Speaker 1: How does that happen?
- 45:00Speaker 3: Well that it wasn't the biggest comedy.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Oh here though, and then now considered like it became.
- 45:08Speaker 3: Yeah, we ate. We were like cheese and or or
- 45:12Speaker 3: a festering wound. We just kept growing and bothering people
- 45:16Speaker 3: to the point where they're like, we cannot not pay attention.
- 45:19Speaker 3: At the time Glee, we came at the same year
- 45:22Speaker 3: as Glee, and they broke the record for Emmy nominations
- 45:25Speaker 3: and they had a big sign and they were also
- 45:27Speaker 3: a paramount and the big sign that said like sixteen
- 45:30Speaker 3: Emmy nominations in our said community zero Emmy nominations and yes,
- 45:37Speaker 3: so that we were. I got on that show because
- 45:41Speaker 3: I was on E and it was owned by Comcast,
- 45:44Speaker 3: and I read the script and asked if I was like,
- 45:47Speaker 3: I want if I can get in this audition and
- 45:50Speaker 3: Dan Harmon's girlfriend at the time, who was a Soup fan,
- 45:54Speaker 3: and she was like, oh, you got to see that guy,
- 45:57Speaker 3: and uh so I once again got extremely lucky for
- 46:02Speaker 3: getting that the chance to audition for it, and then
- 46:06Speaker 3: you know, and then Donald Glover's career really tanked after that.
- 46:10Speaker 1: That was it. That was the height, that was.
- 46:12Speaker 3: That was it was so it uh it Yeah. No,
- 46:16Speaker 3: at the time, we were going to be canceled every
- 46:19Speaker 3: single season we were on isn't and then we were
- 46:22Speaker 3: Then we were picked up by Yahoo Screen, which was
- 46:26Speaker 3: a very short lived streaming service, literally a two year
- 46:30Speaker 3: long streaming service. And then when they went down, they
- 46:33Speaker 3: blamed us, which I can take. It's like I can
- 46:37Speaker 3: take credit for taking down a streaming service. So I'm
- 46:41Speaker 3: just thank you, thank you.
- 46:44Speaker 1: Our producer, Aaron wang Kaufman, who you've been so kind
- 46:48Speaker 1: to since you joined the podcast, is a die hard
- 46:51Speaker 1: Community fan and wanted to pepper you with one question.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Go for it, yes, Aaron, so Joel, I actually changed
- 46:57Speaker 2: my question. I have three scripts in front of me.
- 47:00Speaker 2: I have It's a Small World, I have The Lady
- 47:02Speaker 2: from the Sea, and I have Community. I'm going to
- 47:04Speaker 2: read you a line and you tell me which project
- 47:07Speaker 2: that was from. All right, okay, here we go. This
- 47:09Speaker 2: is yeah, this is a quiz for you. Character one.
- 47:13Speaker 2: I was flying home to Neverland, and I was listening
- 47:15Speaker 2: out for all the music that I always love to
- 47:17Speaker 2: hear when I'm flying home, but I couldn't hear anything.
- 47:20Speaker 2: Pinocchio's house was nearby, so I stopped off to see
- 47:23Speaker 2: if he knew what was going on. Is that it's
- 47:26Speaker 2: a small world? Is that lady by the sea from
- 47:30Speaker 2: the sea, or is that community?
- 47:31Speaker 3: I don't think Ibsen did a lot of lying. It
- 47:36Speaker 3: was just a lot of like, uh, there's a lot.
- 47:40Speaker 3: There was a lot that would have been the last
- 47:44Speaker 3: thought of the grandma who was dying in a chair
- 47:48Speaker 3: for the entire play. Uh. So, obviously it's either community
- 47:52Speaker 3: or it's a small world. And I'm just gonna say
- 47:57Speaker 3: it's community.
- 47:58Speaker 2: Because that's from the very famous Disney spoof episode that
- 48:02Speaker 2: you guys did. No, that's that's the world.
- 48:06Speaker 3: Yeah, but you know, I wouldn't put it past our
- 48:09Speaker 3: playmation episode that if Abed had said that.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Do you uh? If you had obviously you guys had
- 48:14Speaker 2: so many great genre spoofs. If you guys were doing
- 48:17Speaker 2: like a draft day spoof, who within the study group
- 48:20Speaker 2: is going to be the GM, who's going to be
- 48:22Speaker 2: the coach, who's going to be you know, the president
- 48:26Speaker 2: of the team. Who's going to be going.
- 48:30Speaker 3: I would have to go back between two thousand and
- 48:32Speaker 3: nine and twenty fifteen. But right now, that's a good question. Well,
- 48:39Speaker 3: we'd have to have Peter and Kyle Long of course.
- 48:44Speaker 2: They teaching a class at Green or.
- 48:47Speaker 3: They were like murderers loose in the school for some reason. Yeah,
- 48:53Speaker 3: And then I, jeez, I think we would try to well,
- 48:58Speaker 3: it's a good I think we try to get like,
- 49:01Speaker 3: I don't know, like Roger Federer to come in with
- 49:04Speaker 3: a thick Swiss accent and and uh and he would
- 49:08Speaker 3: I don't know, he would probably be our Tom Brady boy.
- 49:14Speaker 3: And then oh boy, and you will yet Flavor Flay.
- 49:17Speaker 3: You know, we referenced flavor.
- 49:20Speaker 1: That's it, all right, community aside. Obviously, I've had this
- 49:24Speaker 1: amazing career. And then I'm at the Super Bowl a
- 49:27Speaker 1: couple of years ago, and I'm in this random group
- 49:29Speaker 1: with Paul Rudd and his kid and Baby Face and
- 49:32Speaker 1: his kid, and we're at Pizzeria Bianco. And then I
- 49:34Speaker 1: see the biggest smile I could ever imagine, and it's
- 49:38Speaker 1: Joel McHale with Gordon Ramsay walking through the door. Now
- 49:41Speaker 1: you're part of the Fox Family and you're on these shows.
- 49:43Speaker 1: You got two shows. Now take us through how you
- 49:47Speaker 1: got embedded into the Fox world and then how awesome
- 49:50Speaker 1: these two programs are?
- 49:51Speaker 3: Oh? Well that you know again, I cannot believe my
- 49:56Speaker 3: when they came to me with Crime Scene Kitchen because
- 49:59Speaker 3: I do love food and I talk about it and
- 50:03Speaker 3: there were I got this new idea and you do
- 50:07Speaker 3: you want to host it? And I was this was
- 50:08Speaker 3: after boy, this is like three years or it is
- 50:11Speaker 3: right before the pandemic, and uh I that they were
- 50:15Speaker 3: just they made me the offer, which I was like absolutely.
- 50:19Speaker 3: And Curtis Stone, who as the chef I always wanted
- 50:22Speaker 3: to know, Uh he's a cool a cool guy, the
- 50:27Speaker 3: coolest guy and a genius. And then you'll landa gamp
- 50:30Speaker 3: who basically started the whole is it cake phenomenon. Go
- 50:35Speaker 3: on her Instagram and go back ten years and she's
- 50:38Speaker 3: already been like is this a pair of shoes or
- 50:40Speaker 3: a cake? And then he says it's cake. And so
- 50:46Speaker 3: that was that's how I got in on that. And
- 50:48Speaker 3: then Animal Control came up, which happened to be at Fox,
- 50:52Speaker 3: and they were like, do you want to play this
- 50:55Speaker 3: old man? This curmudgeonty old man. I was like, yes,
- 50:58Speaker 3: and so that I got again, so lucky, and they've
- 51:02Speaker 3: been really cool and allowing me to tell my silly
- 51:06Speaker 3: jokes and yeah, they've been They I Fox, you know,
- 51:11Speaker 3: like to be on the same network as the Simpsons,
- 51:14Speaker 3: you know, or Bob's Burgers.
- 51:15Speaker 1: I was like, oh, with children, let's go.
- 51:18Speaker 3: Yeah. And then I got to, you know, hang out
- 51:20Speaker 3: with Gordon one the another extremely kind and possibly the
- 51:25Speaker 3: most intense man I've ever met.
- 51:27Speaker 1: But bro, how how smooth is he walked in this restaurant.
- 51:31Speaker 1: This is like the smoothest cat I've ever seen. And
- 51:33Speaker 1: then he's at the super Bowl the next day and
- 51:34Speaker 1: he's on the field and I'm walking with Sean payton
- 51:36Speaker 1: Field like a big shot, and Gordon Ramsey's there and
- 51:38Speaker 1: I'm like, Okay, that's the coolest guy in the building
- 51:40Speaker 1: right there. That's him.
- 51:41Speaker 3: He's that. Yeah. It was like jay Z and Gordon
- 51:43Speaker 3: Ramsey's rotting along and my my I brought my son
- 51:49Speaker 3: and Chaer was in the box next to us. Cool
- 51:53Speaker 3: and he was way more impressed with Gordon Ramsey.
- 51:56Speaker 1: All right, So so they they have a Fox Super
- 52:00Speaker 1: Bowl this year. I assume I'm not going to make
- 52:02Speaker 1: any assumptions, but I hope you're there. I hope.
- 52:05Speaker 3: I think I've already started the campaign. I was like,
- 52:07Speaker 3: maybe I can't hide in the wheel well of the Hagen.
- 52:11Speaker 1: We'll be Hagen. We'll do that, but they I'll take
- 52:15Speaker 1: you back. A couple of months ago, probably before the season,
- 52:17Speaker 1: I saw a jelly Roll for like the fifth time
- 52:19Speaker 1: in concert. I love this guy. And I go on
- 52:21Speaker 1: Good Morning Football, NFL Network show and I'm like, jelly
- 52:24Speaker 1: Roll should do halftime. Everyone loves jelly Roll jelly rolls.
- 52:27Speaker 1: And I got a text from someone that knows these things.
- 52:30Speaker 1: It's like, it's not gonna be jelly rolling, Like General
- 52:31Speaker 1: pres shouldn't do halftime. Like that's just not really, Like
- 52:34Speaker 1: it's not the best thing. I think you should host
- 52:37Speaker 1: NFL Honors on Fox this year, and it's been Keegan
- 52:40Speaker 1: Michael Key in recent years, it's been Steve Harvey before that,
- 52:44Speaker 1: it's on Fox. Joel Am, I am, I am, I
- 52:47Speaker 1: barking up the wrong tree here.
- 52:48Speaker 3: Can I make terrible news for you? It's Kendrick Lamar.
- 52:58Speaker 3: I'm available. I'm happy to do.
- 53:01Speaker 1: I want this. I feel like you'd be so funny.
- 53:03Speaker 1: I would work on your writing team. We would take
- 53:05Speaker 1: the piss every I mean, no one's made a joke
- 53:08Speaker 1: about Belichick dating a twenty four year old until we
- 53:11Speaker 1: do it on NFL Honors.
- 53:12Speaker 3: How is that off limits?
- 53:14Speaker 1: Like taboo or something? It's real, guys. He's out there,
- 53:18Speaker 1: he's posing as a fisherman holding a woman as a mermaid,
- 53:21Speaker 1: and we're not allowed to joke about it.
- 53:23Speaker 3: How he's not Is he work? Is he he's not employed? Right?
- 53:29Speaker 3: Is he employed?
- 53:30Speaker 1: He works for every media company and he's on NFL
- 53:33Speaker 1: Films and NFL Network. So I guess maybe we're not
- 53:36Speaker 1: supposed to it's a it's a fun story. I think
- 53:38Speaker 1: he would laugh.
- 53:40Speaker 3: And I'm you know, he seems to be happy. I mean, sure,
- 53:44Speaker 3: it's crazy, but uh, if you had said this ten
- 53:48Speaker 3: years ago, we'd be like, he's going to be dating
- 53:50Speaker 3: a woman who is uh currently in grade school?
- 53:55Speaker 1: Yeah, we would say that's that's that's a story to

- 54:23Speaker 1: It was Arizona. You're right, Phoenix.
- 54:25Speaker 3: I think Jim Brown I think that was his last appearance,
- 54:28Speaker 3: and I think Kyle Kyle had a run up down
- 54:30Speaker 3: the aisles streaming.
- 54:33Speaker 1: We laughed about that in the green room, you me
- 54:36Speaker 1: and Kyle afterwards, and I think Jim Brown passed like
- 54:38Speaker 1: a couple of years later, and I was like, it
- 54:39Speaker 1: might have been the last time we saw Jim Brown.
- 54:41Speaker 1: Was you yelling angry runs in his face? That might
- 54:43Speaker 1: have done it?

- 55:08Speaker 3: this is what it's like to be on drugs because
- 55:13Speaker 3: I was like, this shouldn't be happening. And then I
- 55:15Speaker 3: I was so well speaking of honored, I was just
- 55:22Speaker 3: guy like getting to know you, Peter.
- 55:25Speaker 1: You're the man. I love that. I love that we

- 55:36Speaker 1: times they're on another premiere.
- 55:37Speaker 3: Animal Yeah, Animal Control starts January second. Crime Scene Kitchen

- 56:29Speaker 1: It's nice to have some levity. He's incredible and his
- 56:32Speaker 1: Seahawks have a big one against the Cardinals this weekend.
- 56:34Speaker 1: But let's talk about last week real quick, because it's
- 56:36Speaker 1: the season with Peter Shaker's delivering results presented by our
- 56:39Speaker 1: sponsors at Uber Eats, and we give out an award
- 56:42Speaker 1: presented to the player or the team that delivered in
- 56:46Speaker 1: the biggest of moments, and I'm giving it to Russell
- 56:49Speaker 1: Wilson who had four hundred and fourteen passing yards and
- 56:53Speaker 1: three touchdowns and a shootout with Joe Burrow last week.
- 56:56Speaker 1: And just as we were ready to jump off the
- 56:58Speaker 1: Steelers bandwagon when they lost to the Browns in the snow,
- 57:02Speaker 1: they come back the following week and they put up
- 57:04Speaker 1: forty four points and they should. They do have the
- 57:07Speaker 1: offensive firepower to compete in the AFC with the Heavies,
- 57:11Speaker 1: the Bills, and the Chiefs. Russell Wilson, his best game
- 57:15Speaker 1: as a Steeler, put up huge yards, the first time
- 57:17Speaker 1: a Steelers quarterback has thrown from more than four hundred
- 57:20Speaker 1: yards in three touchdowns since Big bended it in twenty eighteen.

- 58:30Speaker 2: And twenty one Pilots.
- 58:32Speaker 3: The twenty one.
- 58:33Speaker 1: Piots is different than twenty one Savage, and I'm disappointed.
- 58:35Speaker 1: I like twenty one Savage, twenty one Pilots. I can't
- 58:38Speaker 1: think of a single song of theirs off the top
- 58:39Speaker 1: of my head. They rock, They're like an alt rock
- 58:42Speaker 1: pop band. I thought I was getting twenty one Savage.
- 58:45Speaker 3: That would be.
- 58:49Speaker 1: Perform with Shane Gillis so Startingly Live last year and
- 58:52Speaker 1: he was, oh, oh wow, yes, yeah, So I'm going
- 58:57Speaker 1: to jingle ball. I think if my son's not up
- 58:59Speaker 1: for it, then we won't be going. Always be eating
- 59:01Speaker 1: the tickets, and I apologize to our friends at iHeart.
