- 0:00Speaker 1: John Meston wrote this January 16, 1954 CBS presentation of
- 0:05Speaker 1: Gunsmoke with Norman MacDonald directing and William Conrad as Marshal
- 0:10Speaker 1: Matt Dillon. It is episode 91, The Bear, set in
- 0:15Speaker 1: Dodge City, where Mike Blocker is preparing for marriage and
- 0:19Speaker 1: Joe Plummer's jealousy turns a series of practical jokes into
- 0:23Speaker 1: an increasingly serious matter. Parley Bear is heard as Chester,
- 0:29Speaker 1: with Georgia Ellis as Kitty and Howard McNear as Doc.
- 0:34Speaker 1: John Diener, Lawrence Dobkin, Lou Krugman, and James Nooser are
- 0:39Speaker 1: also featured. Here now is Gunsmoke from its sustaining run
- 0:43Speaker 1: years on CBS. We now take you back to the
- 0:47Speaker 1: original broadcast.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Around our city and in the territory out.
- 1:01Speaker 3: West, there's just one way to handle.
- 1:03Speaker 2: The killers and the spoilers, and that's.

- 1:11Speaker 2: 2021 Guns, Wolves, starring William Conrad. The transcribed story of
- 1:32Speaker 2: the violence that moved west with young America. The story
- 1:35Speaker 2: of a man who.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Moved with it.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Matt Dillon, United States Marshal.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Look up ahead there, Mr. Dillon. Somebody's gone and left
- 2:11Speaker 4: his wagon right out on the prairie.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Oh, there's a man down in front of it, Chester.
- 2:16Speaker 2: It sure looks like his team went off and left him.
- 2:20Speaker 2: What would he be doing out here with a busted
- 2:22Speaker 2: wagon and no teeth? I expect he'll be glad to
- 2:25Speaker 2: tell us. Come on. Get up. Who's there?
- 2:35Speaker 4: Oh.
- 2:35Speaker 3: It's Mike Blocker.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Hello, Mike. Hello there. Well, it's the perfect for a
- 2:43Speaker 2: man to be in the day before his wedding, Michael.
- 2:45Speaker 4: It sure is.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Well, it'll keep me sober, Marshal, and Matilda will appreciate that,
- 2:51Speaker 2: even if I don't make dodge tonight. What happened, Mike?
- 2:54Speaker 4: Where's your team?
- 2:55Speaker 2: Oh, Chester, we hit a hole back there, and the
- 2:58Speaker 2: whiffle tree busted, and that team... He just run off
- 3:01Speaker 2: like they was glad to get you out of the
- 3:03Speaker 2: whole dang thing. That must have been quite a hold
- 3:05Speaker 2: you had to do this.
- 3:07Speaker 4: No, not much.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Looky here, Marshal. The bar's been sawed half and two. Sure.
- 3:19Speaker 4: It's them boys again.
- 3:20Speaker 2: What boys?
- 3:21Speaker 4: Them two crazy cowboys I hired on last fall.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Plumber and Webb, you mean?
- 3:27Speaker 4: Yeah. They've been funning me a lot lately.
- 3:31Speaker 2: You mean this is just a joke?
- 3:33Speaker 4: It's what they figured, I guess.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Well, it ain't much of a joke to leave a
- 3:37Speaker 2: man stranded on the prairie this way. Especially when he's
- 3:40Speaker 2: trying to get to town to be married.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Now, this ain't so bad. Just yesterday, they cut the
- 3:46Speaker 4: stings on my saddle.
- 3:48Speaker 2: But being a bronc got loose and bucked it off
- 3:51Speaker 2: before I could get mounted. I wish I were as even-tempered.
- 3:54Speaker 4: As you are, Mike.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Oh, Marshal, it don't pay to get mad. No, but
- 4:00Speaker 2: it seems to me Plummer and Webb are going a
- 4:02Speaker 2: little far with their jokes.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Don't they want you to get married? I don't know.
- 4:08Speaker 2: I never asked him.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Now, where are they now? Oh, they rode into dog
- 4:11Speaker 4: this morning. They didn't see me at the wedding.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I had to bring the wagon so they could carry
- 4:16Speaker 2: Matilda back to the ranch. Well, we'll find you a
- 4:19Speaker 2: team for you. Maybe we can rig up a whiffle
- 4:20Speaker 2: tree of some sort. You can buy a new one
- 4:22Speaker 2: and talk.
- 4:22Speaker 4: Oh, I'd be beholden to you, Mark.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Now, you'll get to town in time for a drink yet.
- 4:26Speaker 2: We'll ride along with you to see what you do, Mike.
- 4:36Speaker 2: You want a beer, Chester? Well, no, sir.
- 4:46Speaker 4: If you don't mind, Mr.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Dillon, I think I'll go on down to the depot.
- 4:50Speaker 4: The Santa Fe is about due, and I'd like to
- 4:53Speaker 4: watch it come in.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Well, I'll leave you here then. So do
- 4:58Speaker 2: thank you, though, I was saying. Well, uh, I didn't
- 5:01Speaker 2: say that I was buying it. You'd have had to.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I'm bubble. Try not to be mighty careful of what
- 5:08Speaker 2: he says around you. I'll see you later. Okay, sir. Hello, Matt. Hello, Kitty.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Sit down.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:30Speaker 5: I hear if it hadn't been for you and Chester,
- 5:34Speaker 5: Mike Barker never would have got to town today.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Well, he rode in an hour ago, and you already
- 5:39Speaker 2: heard about it? Matilda told me. Oh, that's right. I
- 5:43Speaker 2: forgot about you and Matilda.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Well, she's the only lady in this town who is
- 5:47Speaker 3: my friend.
- 5:48Speaker 2: She's your best.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Oh, thanks, Matt.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Well, You going to.
- 5:54Speaker 4: The wedding, Kitty?
- 5:55Speaker 3: He insists that I do.
- 5:57Speaker 2: You're a pretty close friend, aren't you?
- 5:59Speaker 3: Pretty close, Matt.
- 6:00Speaker 5: I guess his partner thought he could talk to me
- 6:03Speaker 5: about things he wouldn't even dare mention to her nice friend.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Now, they're no better than you are, Kitty.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Maybe not. But there are more of them in the
- 6:12Speaker 3: long run. That makes a difference. What do you want
- 6:16Speaker 3: to know about Matilda and me?
- 6:18Speaker 2: Well, I've been wondering if there's any reason why either
- 6:21Speaker 2: of those cowboys who work for Mike Blocker wouldn't want
- 6:25Speaker 2: that wedding to come off tomorrow.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Plumber and web?
- 6:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 6:31Speaker 3: You must have some reason for wondering about it, man.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Well, man's friends always treat him a little rough before
- 6:38Speaker 2: he gets married, but these boys have carried it pretty far.
- 6:43Speaker 3: There's jealousy, Matt.
- 6:47Speaker 2: No.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Which one?
- 6:49Speaker 5: Plummer.
- 6:51Speaker 3: He and Matilda used to see each other once in
- 6:53Speaker 3: a while. Until she met Mike and fell.
- 6:56Speaker 2: In love with him. Yeah. Has Plummer threatened her or Mike?
- 7:02Speaker 3: He's afraid of Mike in spite of his gentle temper.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Yeah, he should be.
- 7:06Speaker 3: But he told Matilda he'd make as much trouble as
- 7:09Speaker 3: he could.
- 7:09Speaker 2: What kind of trouble?
- 7:11Speaker 3: Anything that'll embarrass her, I guess. Like a chivalry, but
- 7:16Speaker 3: real unfriendly.
- 7:17Speaker 2: They started their chivalry a little early. They even tried
- 7:20Speaker 2: to get Mike crippled up a couple of days ago.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Oh, I didn't know about that.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Nothing came of it. I sure don't like to see
- 7:27Speaker 2: anybody's wedding day spoiled. I think I'll look those two
- 7:32Speaker 2: up and have a talk.
- 7:47Speaker 4: I swear I've been in every saloon in Dodge, Mr. Jones.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Maybe they ain't in.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Town after all.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Well, we'll try the hotel, Chester. Why don't you just
- 7:54Speaker 2: throw them in jail till the wedding's over? I'd like to.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Now, wait a minute.
- 8:00Speaker 2: There they are.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Yes.
- 8:02Speaker 2: It's them, all right. I saw Mike over at the
- 8:06Speaker 2: Longhorn taking on a few. Oh, well, even marrying a
- 8:09Speaker 2: good woman makes a man nervous.
- 8:12Speaker 4: Oh, it sure does.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Well, I just thought of it, and I want to
- 8:16Speaker 2: go live with the Comanches. Well, you can't let other
- 8:19Speaker 2: men do all the marrying.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Why not?
- 8:21Speaker 2: I don't know. It's just, it's what they say. Hello, summer. Hello, Marshall.
- 8:36Speaker 2: What's on your mind, Marshal? I've seen you come all
- 8:39Speaker 2: the way across the plaza. I wanted to talk to
- 8:41Speaker 2: you about the wedding tomorrow. Oh?
- 8:46Speaker 4: You ought to.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Be talking to Mike Blocker. He's the one that's getting married.
- 8:51Speaker 2: We ain't, are we, Webb?
- 8:52Speaker 4: No, we ain't.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Did you think we were? All right, that's enough. You're
- 8:56Speaker 2: not dealing with Mike Blocker now. You're dealing with me,
- 8:58Speaker 2: and my temp is a whole lot.
- 8:59Speaker 4: Quicker than his.
- 9:00Speaker 2: No offense, Marshal. Webb didn't mean nothing. No, I didn't
- 9:04Speaker 2: mean nothing.
- 9:05Speaker 4: We're just in kind of good spirits.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Aren't you out of the wedding and all? Why, sure,
- 9:10Speaker 2: you know how to. Mike told you? He did. He
- 9:24Speaker 2: didn't seem to mind as much as you do, Marshal.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Don't be fooled by that. If Mike ever does get mad,
- 9:28Speaker 2: there's going to be trouble. But I'm telling you to
- 9:31Speaker 2: leave him alone.
- 9:32Speaker 4: We ain't going to do nothing. Maybe a little chivalry
- 9:35Speaker 4: after the wedding.
- 9:35Speaker 2: That's all. I don't want either one of you anywhere
- 9:37Speaker 2: near that wedding.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Oh, now, Marshal, we was invited.
- 9:41Speaker 2: The invitation's off. Do you understand me?
- 9:44Speaker 4: No, but, Marshal... Shut up, Webb.
- 9:47Speaker 2: He's the law. We won't go near the wedding if
- 9:50Speaker 2: he says so. I say we won't go nowhere as near.
- 9:55Speaker 2: That satisfy you, Marshal?
- 9:58Speaker 3: Isn't the gentleman a beautiful man?
- 10:23Speaker 2: Well, if you'll excuse me now, I promised her.
- 10:26Speaker 3: I'd rush to her room and never get past. You
- 10:29Speaker 3: can see all the lovely new clothes she has. She's
- 10:31Speaker 3: been saving for years. Yeah, I know.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Mike told me.
- 10:34Speaker 3: He's real proud.
- 10:35Speaker 2: You're going to wait around to see them.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Off, aren't you?
- 10:39Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll be here. I couldn't get Chester away from
- 10:43Speaker 2: that free liquor anyway. This liquor may be free, but
- 10:47Speaker 2: it ain't too sharp. I'm on my third breath, and
- 10:51Speaker 2: I don't feel it.
- 10:52Speaker 3: You don't have enough blood in you.
- 10:55Speaker 2: To move it around, Chester. That's your trouble. Well, I'd
- 10:58Speaker 2: have plenty of blood if it wasn't for old quacks
- 11:01Speaker 2: like you bleeding me every time my ears cold.
- 11:03Speaker 3: I never bled a man in my life, and you
- 11:06Speaker 3: know it.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Well, maybe you didn't, but I sure have been bled
- 11:09Speaker 2: by other doctors.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Don't blame me if you're fool enough to let him
- 11:13Speaker 3: do it.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Yeah. See, you know, Matt, I've always said that people
- 11:17Speaker 2: would just stand up to their doctors once in a
- 11:19Speaker 2: while and improve the whole medical profession. Well, you may
- 11:23Speaker 2: be right, Doc.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Of course I might.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I'm going to go see if that.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Jug is empty yet.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Mike's drunk half of it himself. Take
- 11:30Speaker 2: a look around outside while you're at it, huh, Justin?
- 11:33Speaker 2: For plumbing and web? Oh, they haven't showed up yet,
- 11:35Speaker 2: but they might be waiting.
- 11:37Speaker 4: All right, sir, I'll do it. Oh, it's a nice wedding.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Wasn't it, Matt? Yeah, fine, fine. I brought some ammonia
- 11:46Speaker 2: along in case Mike got too weak to go through
- 11:49Speaker 2: with it. His entrance was a little shaky, but he
- 11:52Speaker 2: got his cover back about the halfway mark.
- 11:54Speaker 4: Matt! Matt!
- 11:56Speaker 2: What's the matter, Kitty?
- 11:57Speaker 3: Matt, it's terrible. That poor girl.
- 11:59Speaker 2: What's happened?
- 12:00Speaker 3: It's her clothes. All her new clothes. Matt, we went
- 12:03Speaker 3: to her room to get a pack and everything's been
- 12:06Speaker 3: torn to shreds.
- 12:07Speaker 2: What?
- 12:07Speaker 3: It's a mess. And Matilda's up there crying her heart out.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Plumber, I suppose.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Of course you get it.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Who else would?
- 12:14Speaker 2: You better go back to her, Kitty. And don't tell
- 12:18Speaker 2: anybody about it yet.
- 12:19Speaker 4: All right, Matt.
- 12:20Speaker 3: What are you going to do, Matt?
- 12:23Speaker 2: Find Plumber and Webb he did the other. I found
- 12:40Speaker 2: Chester outside, but there was no sign of Plummer and Webb.
- 12:43Speaker 2: We figured they must have sneaked into Matilda's room during
- 12:47Speaker 2: the wedding ceremony, and while he stood downstairs happily becoming
- 12:51Speaker 2: nice brides, they were up there He must have left home, Mr. Dillon. Yeah,
- 13:18Speaker 2: the Oasis over there is the only place we haven't
- 13:21Speaker 2: been into yet. Might as well have a look. It's
- 13:26Speaker 2: making pretty bold calling this place the Oasis. Oh, why?
- 13:30Speaker 2: It's the poorest saloon in town. A thirsty jackass wouldn't stop.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Here to sniff a rain barrel.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Not if he knew his way around, he wouldn't. Lookie there.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Even the door's busted off. Yeah, it sure is. Mr. Dillon,
- 13:51Speaker 2: this place is a wreck.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Where is everybody?
- 13:54Speaker 2: There's been a fight here, Chester. Oh, there's somebody. Look
- 13:58Speaker 2: at his head. He's laying from his... Well, that's web. Yeah.
- 14:06Speaker 2: He got his neck broke, Chester. Where'd that come from?
- 14:11Speaker 2: There behind the bar there. Hey, get the beer off
- 14:20Speaker 2: the bar and throw it on him, Chester. Yes. Don't
- 14:26Speaker 2: hit me. Don't hit me. I'm the Marshal. Nobody's going
- 14:29Speaker 2: to hit you. Now, who are you, mister?
- 14:33Speaker 4: You.
- 14:34Speaker 2: I'm the bartender. Well, what happened here, Joe? Why, that
- 14:39Speaker 2: was crazy. He's still here, Marshal? No, he's gone. Plumbing
- 14:49Speaker 2: web work for Mike something. He was awful mad, Marshal.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Awful drunk, too. Where'd Plumber go? I don't know. I
- 14:58Speaker 2: tried to stop it, but they hit me. Knocked me out.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Was anybody else in here? Just them and then Mike
- 15:04Speaker 2: come in. Joe Webb's lying on the other side of
- 15:08Speaker 2: the bar. He's dead. Dead?
- 15:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Do you see who killed him? He pulled a knife
- 15:15Speaker 2: on Mike. He was going to use it, too. Somebody
- 15:19Speaker 2: killed him, huh? Was it Mike? I got hit about then, Marshal.
- 15:22Speaker 2: I didn't see no more. All right, Joe. You do
- 15:25Speaker 2: something about Webb there. Look what they've done to my place.
- 15:29Speaker 2: It's ruined. Who's going to pay for all this? I
- 15:31Speaker 2: don't know, Joe. But I'll try to find out. I
- 15:38Speaker 2: didn't find out. Not that night, anyway. We looked around
- 15:43Speaker 2: the oasis inside and out, and then I sent Chester
- 15:46Speaker 2: down to wait for Mike in case he showed up
- 15:48Speaker 2: at my children's place. So I shouted the town again.
- 15:52Speaker 2: But shortly after daybreak, we both gave up and met
- 15:56Speaker 2: back at the office. Miss Kitty was down here, Mr.
- 16:01Speaker 4: Dillon. She stayed with.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Matilda all night.
- 16:03Speaker 4: Oh, good.
- 16:03Speaker 2: How's Matilda taking it? Well, I don't think she cares
- 16:07Speaker 2: about her clothes anymore. She's worried about Mike. Oh. You, uh,
- 16:12Speaker 2: didn't tell her about Webb being killed.
- 16:14Speaker 4: Did you?
- 16:15Speaker 2: Oh, my goodness, no, sir. I wouldn't do that. She'll
- 16:18Speaker 2: find out soon enough, poor thing. Oh, it's Mike. Yeah,
- 16:24Speaker 2: it's Mike. I was so drunk and so mad, I
- 16:46Speaker 2: don't remember much of anything. I think he knocked me
- 16:49Speaker 2: on the head while I was finishing off Webb. I
- 16:53Speaker 2: know I ain't seen Plummer since. I've just been down
- 16:56Speaker 2: to the Oasis, Joe. I ain't seen him neither. Well,
- 16:59Speaker 2: nobody has, I know. But where were you? Oh, I
- 17:02Speaker 2: was awful drunk, Marshal. I must have got as far
- 17:06Speaker 2: as Kelly's stable, crawled into a stall there. At least
- 17:10Speaker 2: that's where I woke up this morning. Marshal, that was
- 17:23Speaker 2: a bad thing they'd done to Matilda. Yeah, it was.
- 17:28Speaker 2: But you shouldn't have killed anybody for it.
- 17:31Speaker 4: Well, maybe.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Lock him up, Chester.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 17:38Speaker 2: I'll bring back some coffee.
- 17:46Speaker 4: This way, Mike.
- 17:52Speaker 2: My, I sure am sorry to have to lock up
- 17:56Speaker 2: a man like you, Mike. If you didn't, Chester, I'd
- 17:59Speaker 2: just go find Plummer and kill him. There you are. Yeah. Mr. Dillon,
- 18:11Speaker 2: be back directly. Then you can have some coffee. I
- 18:15Speaker 2: don't want nothing. Don't move, Jackson.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Homer.
- 18:30Speaker 2: I'll take your gun. We've been looking everywhere for you.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Are you glad you found me? Morning, Mike. What are
- 18:54Speaker 2: you doing here, plumber? I come for you, Mike. I'm
- 18:58Speaker 2: going to take you out back and kill you. It's
- 19:02Speaker 2: a good thing you got a gun. I didn't have
- 19:09Speaker 2: a gun last night. What'd you hit me with then?
- 19:14Speaker 2: Table leg. I should have killed you too. You didn't
- 19:21Speaker 2: kill Webb... You knocked him out, that's all. What are
- 19:25Speaker 2: you talking about? He's dead, eh? Sure, he's dead. After
- 19:30Speaker 2: I hit you with that table leg, I busted his
- 19:32Speaker 2: neck with it.
- 19:34Speaker 4: You.
- 19:36Speaker 2: What for? So they'd hang you for it. Well, then
- 19:42Speaker 2: what are you doing here now? I've already admitted to
- 19:44Speaker 2: killing him. I got to thinking, that's why.
- 19:47Speaker 4: Thinking what?
- 19:48Speaker 2: Well, when Doc gets a look at Webb, he'll know
- 19:50Speaker 2: you couldn't have hit him that hard. Anyway, I figured
- 19:54Speaker 2: you'd remember about it all. Well, they'll hang you, poor man.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Not me. I'm going to kill you, and then I'm
- 20:03Speaker 2: going to be gone to Texas.
- 20:04Speaker 4: You shoot me, or I'll hear you.
- 20:06Speaker 2: I ain't going to shoot you. That's my hashtag. I'm
- 20:11Speaker 2: going to cut you, Mike. And you won't look very
- 20:14Speaker 2: good when Matilda sees you. Matilda? We was friends once, Mike.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Real good friends. You know the kind. You and Matilda.
- 20:33Speaker 2: I'll tell you what it was like while I'm cutting
- 20:35Speaker 2: your throat. Get out of that cell now.
- 21:00Speaker 4: It was.
- 21:01Speaker 2: It was Plymouth, Mr. Dillon. He hit me. I'm okay now.
- 21:07Speaker 3: Come on.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Mike's gone. Someone must have let him out.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Let him out? Nothing.
- 21:16Speaker 2: He's probably killed him. Let's look out back.
- 21:19Speaker 4: Look, Mr.
- 21:20Speaker 5: Dillon.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Here you are.
- 21:31Speaker 4: It's Bloomer.
- 21:33Speaker 2: He's been beat to death. He sure has. His gun's missing,
- 21:38Speaker 2: but he got that knife and the mic first. He's
- 21:43Speaker 2: leaving an easy trail to follow. Come on. He headed
- 21:50Speaker 2: for the alley. To an even run-in to Mount Elm Street.
- 21:54Speaker 2: If he got that far....
- 22:12Speaker 3: Got him. All right, come on.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Mike, what did you shoot for? I didn't know it
- 22:20Speaker 2: was you, Marshal. I thought maybe Plummer had come too. No,
- 22:24Speaker 2: Plummer's dead. You're not in very good shape yourself. He
- 22:28Speaker 2: cut me a little before I got to him. Ain't bad,
- 22:32Speaker 2: but I might have killed you. Thank you for not trying, Marshal.
- 22:38Speaker 2: We better get you up to Doc. He'll dig that
- 22:41Speaker 2: bullet out of your arm. Sure. By the way, Mike,
- 22:43Speaker 2: I saw Doc a few minutes ago. He'd been down
- 22:45Speaker 2: looking at Webb. What did you hit him with? Oh,
- 22:48Speaker 2: Plummer killed him. Told me so. He had a table leg, Marshal.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Doc figured something like that.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Our time in Dodge City closes with Gunsmoke the Bear.
