- 0:00Speaker 1: So here's the deal, America, the ethos of America. Pull
- 0:03Speaker 1: yourself up by the bootstraps, right, the reason we were
- 0:06Speaker 1: able to supercharge our economy and leap frog the rest
- 0:09Speaker 1: of the world in the eighteen hundreds, and the reason
- 0:11Speaker 1: that started to dwindle. The first big hit to that
- 0:13Speaker 1: was FDR. Yeah, obviously did some things that were.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Necessary coming out of the depression worship.
- 0:18Speaker 1: But still the beginning of big government, the beginning of
- 0:22Speaker 1: the notion that hey, you can't do it without government,
- 0:25Speaker 1: so began then, and it picked up again in the
- 0:27Speaker 1: late sixties and seventies. And that's the battle we have
- 0:29Speaker 1: in this country. Are we still that nation, that nation
- 0:32Speaker 1: that can pull itself up by the bootstraps? Remember FDR
- 0:35Speaker 1: promoted the four freedoms. I have a problem with three
- 0:37Speaker 1: of them. But the freedom from want, I think, is
- 0:40Speaker 1: what drives us as human beings. We want something that
- 0:43Speaker 1: we work for it, we achieve it. You don't take
- 0:45Speaker 1: that from people. You don't take the idea of accountability
- 0:48Speaker 1: from people and say government will do it all. You
- 0:51Speaker 1: just sit at home and collect you know, food stamps,
- 0:53Speaker 1: eat froot loops. Don't live up to your potential, don't
- 0:56Speaker 1: nurture that God given gifts that you were born with.
- 0:59Speaker 1: That's what made us the greatest country in the world.
- 1:01Speaker 1: And that's my misgivings with FDR.
- 1:02Speaker 2: So Jason play this out. If he does want to
- 1:05Speaker 2: do these socialistic.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Programs, re rebalance money and make sure that all these
- 1:11Speaker 3: social programs, free, free day care, free buses, freeze.
- 1:16Speaker 2: The rent, how's that going to work?
- 1:18Speaker 3: The math is not going to work.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Well.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Look, picking up on what we're hearing from this meeting
- 1:23Speaker 4: today and following up on what Charles Paine was saying,
- 1:26Speaker 4: it's what Abraham Lincoln said, You don't make a weak
- 1:29Speaker 4: man strong by making a strong man weak. And Mom
- 1:32Speaker 4: Donnie has a fundamentally different approach than conservatives, which is, hey,
- 1:36Speaker 4: guess what we're going to There is no problem which
- 1:39Speaker 4: government can't be involved and engaged in. That is so
- 1:42Speaker 4: fundamentally different.
- 1:43Speaker 2: So yeah, he's got six So.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Why not point it out if you're President Trump? Just
- 1:46Speaker 3: that the way he does things, do.
- 1:47Speaker 4: It on the book meeting one, But all of a sudden,
- 1:49Speaker 4: how's he going to come up? He gets a softball
- 1:51Speaker 4: question prior to this meeting, how are you going to
- 1:53Speaker 4: come up with the six or seven hundred million dollars
- 1:56Speaker 4: to give everybody free bus passes. Well, we'll figure out
- 1:59Speaker 4: how to fund that later. How are you going to
- 2:00Speaker 4: do the grocery stores? How are you going to take
- 2:02Speaker 4: that over? How are you going to push out all
- 2:03Speaker 4: the billionaires? All those campaign promises? Donald Trump, I'll tell
- 2:07Speaker 4: you it's a masterclass in working with people. But Mom,
- 2:12Speaker 4: Donnie is the one that set the bar so high
- 2:14Speaker 4: there's no way he can achieve it.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Don't move.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I want to go out to Jackie Heinrich, who was
- 2:18Speaker 3: asking those great questions right in the Oval Office moments ago.
- 2:20Speaker 2: She was in the room. Jackie, your impression of the
- 2:24Speaker 2: get together.
- 2:24Speaker 5: We all witnessed the You know, it was a surprise
- 2:28Speaker 5: to see those two getting along as well as they did.
- 2:31Speaker 5: A couple of times I asked the mayor elect a
- 2:34Speaker 5: tougher question, and the President almost helped him dodge it.
- 2:38Speaker 5: Take a listen to one of them.
- 2:41Speaker 6: I want to ask the mayor elect about a House
- 2:43Speaker 6: resolution just passed overwhelmingly to condemn socialism, including with eighty
- 2:49Speaker 6: six Democrats, all of House dem leadership and the minority
- 2:53Speaker 6: leader had King Jeffries despite his endorsement of you, what's
- 2:56Speaker 6: your reaction to that.
- 2:57Speaker 7: I have to be honest with you. I focused very
- 2:59Speaker 7: little on resolutions. Frankly, I've been focusing on I understand.
- 3:03Speaker 7: I think the focus is on the work at hand.
- 3:04Speaker 7: I can tell you I am someone who is a
- 3:06Speaker 7: democratic socialist. I've been very open about that, and I
- 3:09Speaker 7: know there might be differences about ideology. But the place
- 3:12Speaker 7: of agreement is the work that needs to be done
- 3:13Speaker 7: to make New York City affordable. That's what I look
- 3:15Speaker 7: forward to.
- 3:16Speaker 5: Oh and it cut off a little bit early, but
- 3:18Speaker 5: I followed up asking the President, or asking Wandani rather
- 3:22Speaker 5: to clarify and answer that he gave earlier where he
- 3:25Speaker 5: seemed to confirm that he does believe President Trump is
- 3:29Speaker 5: a fascist, and the President jumped in and said, you
- 3:32Speaker 5: don't have to answer that, you can just say yes.
- 3:35Speaker 5: There were substantive conversations we are told about crime and
- 3:39Speaker 5: public safety and how the two sides can work together.
- 3:43Speaker 5: The President said that folks would be regular folks would
- 3:46Speaker 5: be surprised at how much they do agree on. He
- 3:48Speaker 5: expressed that the mayor elect has some interesting ideas about
- 3:51Speaker 5: housing and some other cost of living issues that maybe
- 3:55Speaker 5: they could find some agreement toward I asked, because crime
- 4:00Speaker 5: and public safety kept coming up so many times, if
- 4:03Speaker 5: that meant working together on ICE and having ICE agents
- 4:08Speaker 5: do the work that we are seeing in so many
- 4:11Speaker 5: other cities, zorun. Mam Donnie had obviously said that he
- 4:15Speaker 5: does not believe that ICE should exist and have the
- 4:18Speaker 5: role that it's having across the country, and he said
- 4:21Speaker 5: in his answer that there are I believe one hundred
- 4:23Speaker 5: and seventy three areas of serious crimes in which they
- 4:28Speaker 5: will work together, So that was interesting. You also heard
- 4:32Speaker 5: the mayor elect say affirm that he will keep the
- 4:36Speaker 5: New York City Police force thirty five thousand strong, and
- 4:40Speaker 5: that was significant, and the President multiple times seemed to
- 4:43Speaker 5: downplay the idea that maybe they would not be.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Able to work together.
- 4:48Speaker 5: Despite all of this fiery rhetoric on the campaign, you
- 4:51Speaker 5: hear President Trump routinely called Mam Donnie a communist. You
- 4:55Speaker 5: routinely hear Mam Donnie talk about how his administration is
- 4:59Speaker 5: going to be a nightmare for the president. But there
- 5:02Speaker 5: was not that tension in the room. They were clearly
- 5:06Speaker 5: trying to find ways to move forward together. And President
- 5:09Speaker 5: Trump also made clear that this is about New York
- 5:11Speaker 5: City City where he built his life and career, has
- 5:16Speaker 5: a lot of love and affection for He even said
- 5:18Speaker 5: that one day, you know, he longed to be the
- 5:20Speaker 5: mayor of New York City. That's how much he loves
- 5:22Speaker 5: that city. And so he's wishing Mom Donnie a lot
- 5:25Speaker 5: of success.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Brian.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Right, they started off on the right foot. Remember they
- 5:28Speaker 2: got a lot.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Cuomo got along with the President too sometimes in the
- 5:32Speaker 3: first term, and they blew up famously with each other,
- 5:36Speaker 3: and they rallied together at the end.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Jackie, great job, great tough questions. You had two people
- 5:41Speaker 2: trying to parry them at the same time. But I
- 5:43Speaker 2: understand exactly what you're going for. I appreciate it. Thank
- 5:46Speaker 2: you all right, Jackie doing a great job.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Does this green light other CEOs Charles to say, have
- 5:52Speaker 3: your meeting with Mondami the president met with him. I
- 5:55Speaker 3: know you have your differences, Jamie Diamond, but go ahead
- 5:58Speaker 3: see if you can work with him.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I mean they have to. Damian Diamond just built a
- 6:02Speaker 1: three billion dollar building and smacked that in the mineral
- 6:04Speaker 1: of Manhattan. I mean, they have to meet with them.
- 6:07Speaker 1: It is interesting, though, Mom Donnie actually set himself up
- 6:09Speaker 1: though he talked about one hundred thousand school children in
- 6:12Speaker 1: New York City who are homeless. Well, why would you
- 6:14Speaker 1: allow illegal immigration? He set himself up as far as
- 6:18Speaker 1: the socialists are, he's a socialist democrat, but as a
- 6:21Speaker 1: victory speech, and it's the Eugene Debs who started out
- 6:24Speaker 1: as a social democrat and eventually became a socialist.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yeah, he had the sirens going off on his victory speech.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Charles Paying Jason Chaffins, thanks so much, guys, appreciate that.
