- 0:10Hello friends. Sean here.
- 0:13It is the 28th of December, it is a Thursday.
- 0:17We are rapidly approaching the very, very end of the year 2023.
- 0:25And as we do that, we are beginning a new story, which is
- 0:28kind of lovely because just as one year ends, the next year
- 0:31begins and life rolls on and God continues to journey with us
- 0:37through it all. And so it seems fitting,
- 0:40friends, that before this year even wraps up, we have begun a
- 0:44new story. And today we will read one of
- 0:47those famous parts of the story where God speaks to Samuel and
- 0:51he has no idea what's going on. And that's fair enough, because
- 0:56if you're anything like me, there are not many times you
- 0:59actually hear God speaking to you.
- 1:01And when it does happen, it can be quite confronting and
- 1:05confusing. So it's good to know we're in
- 1:07good company. Hey, so let us read together the
- 1:11story friends as we put down the business of the world and come
- 1:15before our God Spirit move in us as we hear the story written in
- 1:21First Samuel Chapter 3. Meanwhile the boy Samuel served
- 1:36the Lord by assisting Eli. Now in those days messengers
- 1:41from the Lord were very rare and visions were quite uncommon.
- 1:46One night Eli, who was almost blind by now had gone to bed.
- 1:50The lamp of God had not yet gone out and Samuel was sleeping in
- 1:54the Tabernacle near the ark of God.
- 1:56Suddenly the Lord called out. Samuel.
- 2:00Yes, replied Samuel. What is it?
- 2:04He got up and ran to Eli. Here I am.
- 2:06Did you call me? I didn't call you, Eli replied.
- 2:11Go back to bed. So he did.
- 2:14Then the Lord called out again. Samuel again.
- 2:19Samuel got up and went to Eli. Here I am.
- 2:22Did you call me? I didn't call you my son, Eli
- 2:26said. Go back to bed.
- 2:30Samuel did not yet know the Lord because he had never heard a
- 2:33message from the Lord before. So the Lord called the third
- 2:36time, and once more Samuel got up and went to Eli.
- 2:40Here I am. Did you call me?
- 2:42Then Eli realized it was the Lord who was calling the boy, So
- 2:47he said to Samuel, go and lie down again.
- 2:51And if someone calls again, say speak.
- 2:55Lord, your servant is listening. So Samuel went back to bed, and
- 3:01the Lord came and called as before.
- 3:04Samuel, Samuel and Samuel replied, Speak, your servant is
- 3:10listening. Then the Lord said to Samuel, I
- 3:15am about to do a shocking thing in Israel.
- 3:19I'm going to carry out all my threats against Eli and his
- 3:23family from beginning to end. I have warned him that judgement
- 3:28is coming upon his family forever because his son's a
- 3:32blaspheming God and he hasn't disciplined them.
- 3:36So I have vowed that the sins of Eli and his sons will never be
- 3:41forgiven by sacrifices or offerings.
- 3:45Samuel stayed in bed until morning, then got up and opened
- 3:49the doors of the Tabernacle as usual.
- 3:52He was afraid to tell Eli what the Lord had said to him, but
- 3:56Eli called out to him. Samuel, my son.
- 4:00Here I am, Samuel replied. What did the Lord say to you?
- 4:05Tell me everything, and May God strike you and even kill you if
- 4:10you hide anything from me. So Samuel told Eli everything.
- 4:15He didn't hold anything back. It is the Lord's will, Eli
- 4:21replied. Let him do what he thinks best.
- 4:26As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him, and everything Samuel
- 4:30said proved to be reliable. And all Israel from Dan in the
- 4:34north to Beersheba in the South knew that Samuel was confirmed
- 4:39as a prophet of the Lord. The Lord continued to appear at
- 4:43Shiloh and give messages to Samuel there at the Tabernacle.
- 4:58Father, it does just boggle our minds that as an omnipotent,
- 5:03omniscient God who lives outside of time and space, you choose to
- 5:09engage with us people. And here we see more evidence of
- 5:14you stepping into the story of history again and again and
- 5:20again. Thank you that we are your
- 5:24beloved children. Thank you that you invite us to
- 5:28be a part of your story and your family.
- 5:34We are in constant awe and wonder of your majesty and your
- 5:39love for us. Thank you, Father.
- 5:45You have the heart of a good Father with so much love for us,
- 5:49and we love you back. And we thank you for the gift of
- 5:53Jesus that you have given us, so that we know who you are and we
- 5:58know what you're like and you are good.
- 6:02And so we praise you and we pray all these things in that name of
- 6:07Jesus. Amen.
