- 0:00Hello, everyone, and welcome back to another episode on the Real Life Theology Podcast.
- 0:07Today's episode, we are featuring Mark Moore, who's going to be talking to us about discipleship
- 0:14as allegiance.
- 0:16Here is the episode.
- 0:19On February 7th of 2019, NBC did a news special on a mission organization in the Far East.
- 0:30It was not a complimentary special.
- 0:34This organization had children that were abused in the mission.
- 0:42Because of where they were preaching the gospel, the parents would go and go preach the gospel
- 0:47to these tribes and tongues, their children were at a boarding school, and 27 of them
- 0:56were abused by a dorm dad in the boarding school.
- 1:01One of the women who spoke, her name is Tracy, and she shared her story on national news.
- 1:09She's also a member of our church.
- 1:13She said that from the time she was 12 to the time she was probably about 14, she was
- 1:19abused by this man in the dorm.
- 1:21He has only confessed to seven of these abuses.
- 1:26She knows because she was there, there were 27.
- 1:30Never charged because it was on foreign soil.
- 1:33The mission organization sent him back without any kind of discipline.
- 1:38He was, again, no police charges, no prison time.
- 1:42The lady from NBC, the news anchor, called him on the phone, he actually answered the
- 1:46phone.
- 1:47And she said, are you guilty of this?
- 1:49And he said, well, seven cases, yes, which he lied.
- 1:55She said, do you think you should have gone to prison?
- 1:58And it was stunning.
- 1:59You can go back and hear the report from NBC.
- 2:01He said, I probably should have been beheaded.
- 2:07That was Tracy's father.
- 2:12And I'm wondering, how can you go on mission, go to foreign soil to proclaim the gospel,
- 2:22and abuse your own daughter and 26 other girls, rape and molest girls and boys?
- 2:29Clearly, knowing the Bible isn't enough.
- 2:33So when I write a book like this, that here's the core of the Bible, and I suggest that
- 2:38we do need to get into the Bible.
- 2:40I'm not saying we need to know the Bible.
- 2:43Because you getting into the Bible is not enough if the Bible doesn't get into you.
- 2:47I think we all agree on that, right?
- 2:49So let me just talk through a little bit of the strategy of that by sharing three passages
- 2:56in the Bible on the Bible.
- 2:57And what we know, we're not even guessing about this, studies have been done that demonstrate
- 3:04conclusively the number one discipline for spiritual growth.
- 3:09What will take you further faster is getting into God's Word, specifically Bible engagement,
- 3:14meaning reading the Bible four times a week or more on your own is the most important
- 3:20thing for every disciple to do to grow fastest, furthest.
- 3:24Now, again, knowing the Bible isn't enough.
- 3:27Tracy will tell you that.
- 3:30But the Bible is core for our discipleship.
- 3:34And so I want to share three passages about the Bible on the Bible.
- 3:40The first is 2 Timothy 3, verse 16.
- 3:43You know this.
- 3:44It says, all scripture is inspired by God, useful for teaching and for correcting and
- 3:49training in righteousness.
- 3:51That is the Bible on the Bible.
- 3:53Here's another verse, Hebrews 4, verse 12.
- 3:58It says, for the Word of God is alive and powerful, that is sharper than the sharpest
- 4:03two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow, it exposes
- 4:08the innermost thoughts and desires.
- 4:12The third passage of the Bible on the Bible, I'll read that in a minute, is chapter six
- 4:17of the book of Ephesians, verse 17, the armament of God.
- 4:21There's the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
- 4:26So this is the Word of God on the Word of God.
- 4:29What's fascinating to me about this, Bobby, is all three of these passages use a different
- 4:34Greek word for word.
- 4:37Have you heard of this?
- 4:40The Word of God, the word for word in 2 Timothy 3, all scripture is inspired, is graphe, which
- 4:46you hear the English word graphics, calligraphy.
- 4:49It is the writing.
- 4:50It is the document.
- 4:51So when we talk about the book, that's the graphe.
- 4:55And so Paul says to Timothy, I mean, he's in prison to the end of his life.
- 4:58He says, bring me my scrolls.
- 5:00He's a Bible guy.
- 5:01I get that.
- 5:02I'm a Bible guy.
- 5:03But just knowing the word is not enough.
- 5:06Tracy will tell you, just knowing the word is not enough.
- 5:10The second word for word, and this is in Hebrews 4.12, it's not graphe, anyone know?
- 5:18It's logos.
- 5:19It is the embodied word.
- 5:23Now when I say logos, what do you think of?
- 5:26Any other passage come to mind?
- 5:28John 1.1, Jesus is the logos.
- 5:31Let me make a suggestion.
- 5:33Anybody at Hebrews 4.12?
- 5:35Let me make a suggestion that instead of reading that with the Bible in view, that you actually
- 5:41think about John 1.1, that we're talking about Jesus, the embodied Word of God, not just
- 5:48the written Word of God.
- 5:49See if this doesn't make sense, because the translators have imported, it's not in the
- 5:55Greek text, they have imported neuter pronouns, it.
- 6:01What if we read it as he, like capital H, he?
- 6:04Let me read it again, Hebrews 4.12, for the Word of God is alive and powerful.
- 6:10Hello, that's Jesus.
- 6:13He is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword cutting between the soul and spirit,
- 6:19between joint and marrow, he exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
- 6:25And if we go to verse 13, this is where it makes most sense to me, nothing in all creation
- 6:30is hidden from God.
- 6:32Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we will give
- 6:37an account.
- 6:38And theologically, we know that's Jesus.
- 6:41In other words, you don't know the Word until you live the Word.
- 6:47And when you begin to embody the Word of God, then you start to understand the biblical
- 6:52text.
- 6:53So, let me just make this suggestion.
- 6:56You know, we've all heard from St. Francis of Assisi, preach always, use words if you
- 7:01have to.
- 7:04I love that, and I hate it.
- 7:07Because if you just live the Word of God, but you don't announce the Word of God, where
- 7:14I live, I'm going to assume you're a good Mormon.
- 7:19I might assume that you're Oprah Winfrey.
- 7:23But I don't know that you're a Christian.
- 7:26When I was in the eighth grade, I guess I was somewhat precocious.
- 7:29I was using a Strong's Concordance.
- 7:32They didn't have computers back then.
- 7:33In fact, this was long before cell phones, even.
- 7:36I'm dating myself.
- 7:37But I found this Concordance of Strong's, and I read, because I went to a pagan high
- 7:43school, where it was intimidating to share your faith.
- 7:45So I was reading Matthew 10, where Jesus said, anyone who confesses me, I will confess to
- 7:51my Father.
- 7:52But anyone who denies me, I will deny him to my Father.
- 7:55That's Jesus, not me.
- 7:58This sounds like fair play, but it's also playing hardball, right?
- 8:02So I assumed that confessing Jesus was with your life.
- 8:07It's lifestyle evangelism.
- 8:09It was the 70s.
- 8:10It was all the rage.
- 8:12And denying him would have to be verbal.
- 8:15So I go to Strong's.
- 8:16I'm in the eighth grade.
- 8:18Guess what?
- 8:19Even an eighth grader can figure out that the verbality is actually confessing.
- 8:26That if we confess with our mouths, we should know that from Romans 10, but the denial is
- 8:31a specific Greek word that means denying with your life.
- 8:34So you can deny Jesus without saying a word.
- 8:37You cannot confess Jesus without speaking it out.
- 8:42Now this leads me to the last verse, which is Ephesians chapter 6 and verse 17.
- 8:48It is the sword of the Word of God.
- 8:50It is not graphe.
- 8:51It is not logos.
- 8:53It is the word rhema.
- 8:56And rhema is a verbal declaration.
- 9:00And the reason that I wrote this book is because in the church where I serve, we baptized
- 9:07a lot of people last year.
- 9:09Over 10% of our average attendance we baptized last year, which is huge numbers.
- 9:14And so all these people are coming to Christ, but how are they going to grow in Christ?
- 9:18They won't grow sufficiently by coming and hearing me preach.
- 9:24They're not going to grow sufficiently even by going to a neighborhood group and sharing
- 9:28with other Christians how they feel about the weekend's message.
- 9:33How you articulate the Word of God in the life of someone that you are dealing with,
- 9:40you don't fully know the power of God.
- 9:43I've got a friend of mine, I just met him, he goes to our church, he's a Kawhi Leonard
- 9:50shooting coach.
- 9:52He's like all around these major NBA players.
- 9:57He knows about the Word.
- 10:00But what he's really wrestling with now is how do I speak the Word of God into the lives
- 10:05of these men who desperately need it so much?
- 10:08And I'm telling you, his next step in discipleship, and this is going to put him like over the
- 10:12moon, is when he brings one of these players to Christ and baptizes them into Jesus.
- 10:20You know it's true.
- 10:21Your greatest growth is when you share the gospel and get to bring someone from darkness
- 10:27into light.
- 10:29And so what I've tried to do with this tool, and I hope it's a practical tool for you in
- 10:34your church, is identify the 52 verses that are most important for spiritual growth.
- 10:41And we've wrapped some exercises around them so that every week you have one verse, a short
- 10:47essay, a tool for memorizing it.
- 10:50You can go to core52.org and memorize each of these verses in front of you, in front
- 10:57of a camera.
- 10:58It's silly, it's goofy, and it's effective.
- 11:00I thought people were going to think it's goofy.
- 11:03People are loving those little videos to help them get into the Word.
- 11:07Now by speaking the Word, I don't mean you have to quote it word for word.
- 11:11But when you begin to apply the Word of God with a co-worker in the next cubicle, with
- 11:17a teammate on the basketball court, when you share it with a next-door neighbor over the
- 11:22fence, and you hear the Word of God coming out of you, that's when your spiritual growth
- 11:28and discipleship will trend upward and to the right exponentially.
- 11:34So we've tried to make these exercises simple and practical, but please, you all have the
- 11:40book.
- 11:41I'm just asking you, don't use this to get smart.
- 11:48Use this to share the truth of God with people around you.
- 11:53I started by telling you Tracy's story.
- 11:56She allowed me to share it with our entire congregation.
- 12:00And she's in one of our campuses on the south side of the city.
- 12:04In the north side of the city, I went to visit, and this woman pinned my ears back.
- 12:09She said, you've got to put me in contact with her.
- 12:12You've got to put me in contact.
- 12:13We've got to get together.
- 12:16And she lived the same biography as Tracy.
- 12:20Well, I can't just give out someone's name and number, so I called Tracy and said, hey,
- 12:25would you mind if I shared your story?
- 12:27So absolutely.
- 12:28So the two got together.
- 12:29Tracy's in her mid-30s.
- 12:30This woman was in her mid-60s.
- 12:33And they got together and began to pray what it would be like for them to not just believe
- 12:39the Word of God.
- 12:40And for Tracy, it's hard some days.
- 12:43She struggles, as you might imagine.
- 12:46But what would it be like if we began to share our stories because we believe the Word of
- 12:51God, we speak the Word of God?
- 12:53And because they did that, at camp this last year, a 16-year-old girl came up to me and
- 12:57said, I heard Tracy's story, and I just got out of my own nightmare.
- 13:07By connecting her to Tracy, she shaved off 20 years of recovery that it took for Tracy.
- 13:17Because somebody didn't just believe the Word of God, but they spoke the Word of God into
- 13:23someone else.
- 13:25That's our discipleship journey.
- 13:29Thank you guys for listening to this episode of The Real Life Theology Podcast.
- 13:34Coming up next, we've got Matt Proctor, who's going to continue this conversation on discipleship
- 13:39as allegiance.
- 13:40Hope to see you guys on the next episode.
