- 1:19Speaker 1: Favorites the podcast from the Volume Podcast Network. I am
- 1:23Speaker 1: Chad Millman, chief content officer of the Action Network. Huge
- 1:27Speaker 1: Show today, Huge, Huge Show. Last week was the NFL Draft.
- 1:31Speaker 1: We were in Vegas. I did a live show from
- 1:33Speaker 1: Vegas with Simon. Simon was too scared to go to Vegas.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I went to Vegas. I came back with COVID. So
- 1:39Speaker 1: if I sound weird, that's why my voice sounds off.
- 1:44Speaker 1: That's why. But you know what, I'm a gamer. I
- 1:47Speaker 1: do the podcast anyways. Doesn't matter that it feels like
- 1:51Speaker 1: every time I swallow, I'm swallowing glass that has been
- 1:54Speaker 1: broken and stepped on and paulverized. I don't care. I'm
- 1:58Speaker 1: doing it anyways. On the next podcast, we're gonna do
- 2:01Speaker 1: a very big breakdown about the draft, the players drafted,
- 2:06Speaker 1: how it's impacting futures, how we want to think about
- 2:09Speaker 1: teams in terms of division, um odds, conference odds, potential
- 2:14Speaker 1: win totals. We're gonna talk about my interaction with Chris
- 2:17Speaker 1: Long asking him about Joe O'Malley, which Simon wanted me
- 2:21Speaker 1: to do because that's his brother in law, so him
- 2:23Speaker 1: grew up together. Plus some other exciting interesting things that
- 2:26Speaker 1: happened to me that it was honestly four and fifty
- 2:31Speaker 1: thousand to one shot that this happened, and it happened
- 2:34Speaker 1: to me. Um, we'll talk about that in the next
- 2:37Speaker 1: episode because right now Simon might be ff my companion,
- 2:40Speaker 1: my compadre, professional better Simon Hunter. In a minute, we're
- 2:44Speaker 1: gonna bring on Leeboff, Michael Leeboff, one of your favorite people.
- 2:47Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about the NHL playoffs, which started this week.
- 2:50Speaker 1: How are you, buddy, good buddy. Yeah, that's that's a
- 2:52Speaker 1: lot of a lot to impact. I'm excited to break
- 2:54Speaker 1: it all down in the future episode. But of course
- 2:57Speaker 1: we gotta get to Lord Stanley. All things stop Francille playoffs,
- 3:00Speaker 1: which arguably, I mean, we'll get into it. People say
- 3:03Speaker 1: it's the best playoffs. What do you think, chat is
- 3:05Speaker 1: that your favorite playoffs? I'm more of a Baseball is
- 3:07Speaker 1: my favorite, But what is NHL your favorite playoffs? Yeah,
- 3:11Speaker 1: I mean, as much as NHL is my favorite anything,
- 3:15Speaker 1: I guess that's gonna be. Uh. What I love most
- 3:19Speaker 1: about the NHL. At the end of the day, my
- 3:22Speaker 1: favorite sports bar none, NFL, NBA. Everything else for me
- 3:30Speaker 1: is a much much distant third, fourth, fifth place, and
- 3:36Speaker 1: I have staying in person to watch. You're just in general,
- 3:39Speaker 1: like your general and so in general, so like the
- 3:44Speaker 1: NBA playoffs to me have been astounding, not the first
- 3:49Speaker 1: couple of games of the set of the semifinals, but
- 3:53Speaker 1: in the beginning. Look, I was at the net Celtics game,
- 3:56Speaker 1: on the floor for Tatum's game winning shot right in
- 4:00Speaker 1: front of us, and we you know, videoed, and it
- 4:02Speaker 1: was amazing. Um, these playoffs to me have been just wondrous.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But I will say and lie Boff sort of introduced
- 4:10Speaker 1: this to me, the the NHL playoffs are hard and
- 4:16Speaker 1: and the intensity in these games is so heightened and
- 4:22Speaker 1: this it almost sounds like they have mics in different
- 4:24Speaker 1: places on the boards, right, Like the sound of the
- 4:27Speaker 1: checking is harder, the sound of the skates is sharper,
- 4:30Speaker 1: the sound of the puck against the board is sharper.
- 4:34Speaker 1: All those things feel like it rings true in the
- 4:37Speaker 1: NHL playoffs. Let's bring him in. Let's bring in Mike Lieboff,
- 4:41Speaker 1: who is the well probably he's the best hockey analyst
- 4:46Speaker 1: in the world at this point, and he's been in
- 4:49Speaker 1: the podcast before talking about his love of the Islanders.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Unfortunately they didn't make the playoffs. Pretty clear distinction between
- 4:57Speaker 1: the haves and the have nots in the East this
- 5:00Speaker 1: year leadoff Islanders being sort of the best of the
- 5:03Speaker 1: worst and the havenots. I feel about these playoffs right now,
- 5:09Speaker 1: other than the fact the Islanders aren't it, Yeah, I'm
- 5:12Speaker 1: just dreading them basically on on every single level so far.
- 5:17Speaker 1: When I went to in my last night, I don't
- 5:20Speaker 1: know if I scored one goal. Combined the two teams
- 5:23Speaker 1: I've been on, they lost combined tent to one. So
- 5:26Speaker 1: we're up to a rip roaring start. But I would
- 5:28Speaker 1: take that um every day. Over at the NBA playffs,
- 5:31Speaker 1: I couldn't tell you what teams are still in there.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I think I can name five of the six team
- 5:37Speaker 1: and NBA playoff teams this year just because they're always
- 5:39Speaker 1: in it. I found out the Lakers are bad a
- 5:41Speaker 1: couple of days ago UM from our producer, so that yeah,
- 5:47Speaker 1: they just I don't I don't find them compelling at all.
- 5:49Speaker 1: But the NHL, Yeah, sit back and even when my
- 5:52Speaker 1: team's not in it. You just get engrossed with it
- 5:55Speaker 1: and trying to get I mean, I've the Islanders have
- 5:58Speaker 1: a couple of eternal rivals too, so that helps. And
- 6:00Speaker 1: they're both in the playoffs, and the Rangers and may Believe,
- 6:02Speaker 1: so you know, I'm a huge Penguins and Lightning fan,
- 6:05Speaker 1: two teams that the Islanders played the playoffs last year,
- 6:07Speaker 1: which is hilarious. It's the the old enemy of your
- 6:11Speaker 1: enemy is your friend kind of thing. Was that sun
- 6:12Speaker 1: Zoo who said that in his book War? Yeah? Um,
- 6:16Speaker 1: and that definitely kind of sums up the NHL playoffs too, right,
- 6:19Speaker 1: It's basically sun Zoo's Art of War. Every spring it's roight, man,
- 6:26Speaker 1: it's totally rough. I do think that this was a
- 6:28Speaker 1: really interesting year in the NHL highest scoring season we've
- 6:34Speaker 1: had in decades. What do you think a counter for that? Uh? Yeah,
- 6:39Speaker 1: it's high scoring season we've ever seen. And also in
- 6:44Speaker 1: the salary cap era and also for the first time
- 6:46Speaker 1: in decades, favorites had their best season ever, which was
- 6:51Speaker 1: not good for me either. So the league kind of
- 6:54Speaker 1: had a paradigm shift. I think, like during the pandemic,
- 6:57Speaker 1: where the teams that knew they were going to be
- 7:00Speaker 1: bad for the season's coming out of the pandemic, where
- 7:03Speaker 1: going full you know, Pittsburgh pirates, let's just try to
- 7:06Speaker 1: lose doesn't really happen in the NHL, I don't think
- 7:10Speaker 1: as much as in other sports normally. Um, there's usually
- 7:14Speaker 1: a pretty big, mushy middle. And this time, like you said,
- 7:16Speaker 1: it was has and have snots and and then the Islanders,
- 7:19Speaker 1: who kind of played a schedule at tune to like
- 7:22Speaker 1: an independent you don't have. Sometimes a college basketball a
- 7:25Speaker 1: team will be like, hey, we're jump into Division one.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Now we'll play in this division, but we can't qualify
- 7:30Speaker 1: for the postseason. Um. I think Bryant did it a
- 7:33Speaker 1: couple of years ago. Uh, the Islanders kind of played
- 7:36Speaker 1: that sort of schedule, like they stopped started the first
- 7:39Speaker 1: thirteen games on the road. Um, they had like four
- 7:42Speaker 1: games between games, and then they play it back to back.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Then they come home. Then they fled Arizona. Then they
- 7:48Speaker 1: got COVID really bad. The league didn't shut them down,
- 7:50Speaker 1: and then they shut down all the other teams that
- 7:52Speaker 1: had COVID. So then the Islanders played a jam packed
- 7:54Speaker 1: you know, second half, most compact schedule in NHL history.
- 7:58Speaker 1: So they were just playing in a different league. It
- 7:59Speaker 1: felt like too, because they're out of touch both the
- 8:02Speaker 1: haves and the have snots have not so that, uh,
- 8:05Speaker 1: that kind of summed up their season and they being
- 8:08Speaker 1: they were literally the only team at the Eastern Conference
- 8:10Speaker 1: in that that bushing middle. So it was just a
- 8:13Speaker 1: very strange season event nhil hockey, And mercifully it's over
- 8:17Speaker 1: and now we have to deal with the marathon, the
- 8:21Speaker 1: second marathon, which is the playoffs. Yeah, the scoring is
- 8:24Speaker 1: up in every sport, isn't that? Isn't that the key
- 8:26Speaker 1: to all these sports? Now, Basketball, the three exchange everything.
- 8:29Speaker 1: NFL they don't call the pen they don't call penalties
- 8:31Speaker 1: anymore on offense. So the NFL scoring more. Baseball is
- 8:34Speaker 1: the only one that's like, you know what, let's bring
- 8:36Speaker 1: in the unifiers and change the baseball so there's no scoring.
- 8:39Speaker 1: So I like you with hockey, like I didn't say it.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Where again, my favorite playoffs might be baseball. That's just
- 8:45Speaker 1: because I like the drama baseball, but hockey, to me,
- 8:49Speaker 1: only Premier League in my opinion, is the best, a
- 8:51Speaker 1: better sport to watch in person. Hockey in person, there's
- 8:54Speaker 1: something about the ice and these guys ice skating on weapons. Um,
- 8:58Speaker 1: it's just a really there's something really romantic about hockey
- 9:01Speaker 1: and playoff hockey itself. I mean, it's the best going
- 9:05Speaker 1: to a playoff game in person for hockey, and there's
- 9:07Speaker 1: nothing like it. So I'm heartbroken and for leave offter
- 9:11Speaker 1: about his team, But I have the first team I
- 9:13Speaker 1: have to talk about. Chat has gotta be the Ice Cats,
- 9:15Speaker 1: the Florida Panthers. This team hundred twenty two points. I
- 9:19Speaker 1: guess no one really cares about them outside of Florida,
- 9:21Speaker 1: but I care as a hockey fan because they always choke.
- 9:25Speaker 1: This is my favorite thing about sports is it doesn't matter.
- 9:28Speaker 1: These teams have no connection to that previous team that
- 9:31Speaker 1: went to Stanley Cup finals for the Florida Panthers, But
- 9:33Speaker 1: some reason, all their fans are like, we're gonna lose
- 9:36Speaker 1: around one. We're gonna choke to the Capitols, gonna get
- 9:39Speaker 1: a worst matchup of of a Vetchkan team. Leave Off
- 9:42Speaker 1: how you how you viewing this series? Are we taking
- 9:44Speaker 1: the dog in this series or is it the Panthers
- 9:46Speaker 1: time to shine? Yeah? I think from a betting perspective, Washington,
- 9:51Speaker 1: it's a team to go with right, like getting three
- 9:53Speaker 1: to one on on a team that is really clinical
- 9:56Speaker 1: in uh In in front of their the opposing netlik
- 9:59Speaker 1: with ovechkin In and their playmakers t j Osh Nicholas
- 10:03Speaker 1: backs from these are all guys chat Chat knows all
- 10:05Speaker 1: all too well, right, But they're they're kind of built
- 10:09Speaker 1: to CounterPunch and that's what they'll need to do against
- 10:11Speaker 1: the Panthers, who just owned the puck whenever they're out there.
- 10:15Speaker 1: And I actually think it's funny that the perception of
- 10:17Speaker 1: the Panthers is is really interesting because, like you said,
- 10:21Speaker 1: they're the butt of a lot of jokes in the
- 10:23Speaker 1: in the NHL, especially from fans in big markets like
- 10:26Speaker 1: Toronto Montreal. The Snowbirds always love to go to those
- 10:29Speaker 1: games in the winter, like their they vacation down there,
- 10:32Speaker 1: rich Canadian people and and they show up like you'll
- 10:35Speaker 1: get Canucks Panthers game in February and be packed with
- 10:39Speaker 1: Canucks fans from I don't know, eight thousand miles away
- 10:42Speaker 1: that is. But this season, this team is just they've
- 10:44Speaker 1: been the best neutral UH team to watch from a
- 10:47Speaker 1: neutral standpoint. They play, they they're overs, especially at home.
- 10:51Speaker 1: We're incredibly profitable. They just were scoring at will. It
- 10:55Speaker 1: seemed like they've come back from like five one down
- 10:57Speaker 1: and a couple of different games, and so they are
- 11:00Speaker 1: incredibly easy on the eye. And they have the game
- 11:03Speaker 1: tonight against the Capitals. Game one should the atmosphere should
- 11:06Speaker 1: be awesome because you know, kind of like the Islanders,
- 11:08Speaker 1: it's a small fan base down there, but they love
- 11:11Speaker 1: their Panthers, the ones that show up. Can you imagine
- 11:13Speaker 1: being a hockey fan that grew up in you know,
- 11:15Speaker 1: the suburbs of Miami, Like you're you're probably the only
- 11:18Speaker 1: one of you in your neighborhood. So when you get
- 11:20Speaker 1: to go to the game and you see someone else
- 11:22Speaker 1: who cares about this team for some reason that plays
- 11:25Speaker 1: in the National Hockey League and has for you know,
- 11:27Speaker 1: almost thirty years, now, you know that's your that's your
- 11:30Speaker 1: your family member, basically, that's uh, you know, a member
- 11:33Speaker 1: of your tribe. And we'll see some rats on the ice,
- 11:36Speaker 1: which is always fun. I don't know if you guys
- 11:37Speaker 1: know that tradition with the Panthers from from Scott Mellan
- 11:41Speaker 1: by a rat during their playoff runing their first year
- 11:44Speaker 1: ever they went to the Stanley Cup finals. First or
- 11:46Speaker 1: second year in ninety six they lost the Avalanche and
- 11:49Speaker 1: um right during the middle part of that season or
- 11:52Speaker 1: beginning of that season, a rat ran across the locker
- 11:55Speaker 1: room in the old I think it's called like the
- 11:57Speaker 1: Miami Ice Garden or something, and Scott mellan be on
- 12:00Speaker 1: that team, killed the rat. And from that point on,
- 12:03Speaker 1: whenever the Panthers have a big wind, or you know,
- 12:05Speaker 1: someone scores a hat trick, or just like before a
- 12:07Speaker 1: big game, you'll just see a bunch of plastic rats
- 12:08Speaker 1: get thrown on the ice, which is, you know, something
- 12:11Speaker 1: I've always loved. I would love to take someone from
- 12:13Speaker 1: like when I was areas and be like, hey, come
- 12:15Speaker 1: to this Panthers game with me and see if they can,
- 12:18Speaker 1: you know, try to explain to them why are there,
- 12:20Speaker 1: why are these people throwing rats? Because it's just such
- 12:23Speaker 1: a strange, strange tradition. I had an uber driver in
- 12:28Speaker 1: Vegas the night the morning I was leaving what is
- 12:30Speaker 1: now known as the trip wor Chad got COVID and
- 12:33Speaker 1: UM and yet is gamely moving through his day and
- 12:36Speaker 1: his meetings and participating as a professional, and he ran through.
- 12:42Speaker 1: He had emigrated to the United States, I think from Cuba,
- 12:47Speaker 1: and spent the majority of his life in Florida and
- 12:51Speaker 1: then moved to Vegas for a job. The job didn't
- 12:53Speaker 1: work out, he was still living in Vegas. We ran
- 12:56Speaker 1: through the Ready Creek UH community and how the laws
- 13:04Speaker 1: dictate what Disney Cannon cannot do and the billion dollars
- 13:07Speaker 1: in debt relief they are due and who's going to
- 13:09Speaker 1: pay for that? In Orange and Osciola County to my
- 13:13Speaker 1: home where I live now, West Hartford, Connecticut. Because he
- 13:17Speaker 1: asked me where I was going and I said Connecticut.
- 13:19Speaker 1: He goes Hertford, I go West Hartford. He goes, oh yeah,
- 13:21Speaker 1: my daughter went to school there. And then um through
- 13:25Speaker 1: we passed the Golden Knights arena and we talked. Then
- 13:28Speaker 1: we were talking about the Golden Knights. He loves going
- 13:30Speaker 1: to the Golden Knights. He and and how um but
- 13:33Speaker 1: he really loves going to Panther games and that's his team.
- 13:36Speaker 1: And what a great year they had. This guy knew everything.
- 13:39Speaker 1: He was like the Cliff clevelnd of Uber Drivers. He
- 13:42Speaker 1: was a true renaissance man. I hope the Cliff alma
- 13:49Speaker 1: mater of my my college. That's right, Bridge Court, Connecticut
- 13:53Speaker 1: native Cliff Cleven that's right, that's right. It all comes
- 13:57Speaker 1: back to to leave off. Um, the point is the
- 14:02Speaker 1: Florida Panthers best team in hockey. Uh, they are not
- 14:07Speaker 1: favored to win the Stanley Cup title. That would be
- 14:10Speaker 1: the Colorado Avalanche, who you just mentioned as having beaten
- 14:13Speaker 1: them in their only Stanley Cup final appearance. What's the
- 14:16Speaker 1: delio there, leaf, Yeah, the Panthers are their team that
- 14:21Speaker 1: tries to outscore you, which that game sometimes doesn't translate
- 14:24Speaker 1: all that well in the NHL playoffs, which, like you
- 14:27Speaker 1: kind of mentioned before, it's it's tighter checking, it's harder,
- 14:30Speaker 1: the space on the ice gets gets eaten up. Refs
- 14:33Speaker 1: tend to swallow their whistle a little bit more. Meanwhile,
- 14:36Speaker 1: the the Avalanche, I think they finished what three points
- 14:38Speaker 1: adrift of Florida this regular season, and they were dealing
- 14:43Speaker 1: with injuries to key players all season. So it's a
- 14:47Speaker 1: this team, if they were fully healthy, was probably they
- 14:49Speaker 1: probably lost like thirteen and fourteen points just through through
- 14:52Speaker 1: injuries and stuff like that. So they're clearly the best team,
- 14:56Speaker 1: uh in the NHL. But like you know, Simon was
- 14:59Speaker 1: saying before, there are some kodus around around the playoffs
- 15:02Speaker 1: time and the Avalanches is that they can't get past
- 15:04Speaker 1: the second round. And like you said, this version of
- 15:07Speaker 1: the Avalanche has nothing to do with the versions that
- 15:09Speaker 1: have had trouble advancing in the year's past. Um, but
- 15:13Speaker 1: they will have a tough second round matchup against the
- 15:16Speaker 1: Blues or the Wild. So it's just like when you
- 15:19Speaker 1: get to that like final eight in the in the NHL,
- 15:21Speaker 1: it's but the margin between the teams is just so fine,
- 15:25Speaker 1: whereas I think in other sports, like you know, the
- 15:27Speaker 1: NBA and don't like if the Hawks are playing the
- 15:30Speaker 1: Lakers or wherever else is good, um, I think that
- 15:33Speaker 1: the gap is just so much wider. And you're talking
- 15:34Speaker 1: about it a sport that has um. You know, scoring
- 15:37Speaker 1: events are are there's a lot of scoring events in
- 15:40Speaker 1: the in the NBA, whereas in the NHL or soccer
- 15:43Speaker 1: there's not. So if you don't convert those opportunities and
- 15:46Speaker 1: the other team does, you're gonna lose and no matter
- 15:49Speaker 1: how well you played. So there's just like the margin
- 15:51Speaker 1: for error in in hockey, especially when you're playing another
- 15:54Speaker 1: good team in the best of seven, is just so thin.
- 15:56Speaker 1: So that's why you know, I hate betting favorites. Uh.
- 16:00Speaker 1: In terms of especially in terms of futures. And I
- 16:02Speaker 1: wouldn't really be surprised if if Colorado has trouble next
- 16:05Speaker 1: round with with either St. Louis or or Minnesota. Listen
- 16:10Speaker 1: that that Ray Bork is a pretty great defenseman. I
- 16:12Speaker 1: feel like with him on their side, they got a
- 16:16Speaker 1: pretty good shot. Right. Well, that was that was the
- 16:19Speaker 1: ESPN s Hey that were you at? You probably at
- 16:21Speaker 1: ESPN when when Ray Bourk went to the Avalanche to
- 16:23Speaker 1: win that Cup. Totally remember him getting from the Bruins
- 16:27Speaker 1: to to go get that cup and what a thrill
- 16:30Speaker 1: it was for everybody in sports. They retired his number
- 16:35Speaker 1: in Colorado, I think despite just playing that part of
- 16:39Speaker 1: one season there and winning the Stanley Cup. So yeah,
- 16:42Speaker 1: good for Ray, I guess. But um yeah, that that
- 16:45Speaker 1: that Gary Thorne calls is iconic. So when the NHL
- 16:49Speaker 1: went back to ESPN for for the season and ESPN
- 16:51Speaker 1: Plus and all that, you heard it in like all
- 16:54Speaker 1: the season opening montage just was was Gary Thorne saying
- 16:57Speaker 1: Raymond Burke uh and it's uh, we didn't get the
- 17:01Speaker 1: We didn't get the full on nostalgia effect from ESPN
- 17:04Speaker 1: going back to them, Like they didn't really they played
- 17:06Speaker 1: into it, but not that much. And also I have
- 17:08Speaker 1: a question, Um, I don't understand this phenomenon with sports
- 17:13Speaker 1: now that these broadcast booths are being filled with people
- 17:16Speaker 1: who aren't played by play people like the NHL that
- 17:18Speaker 1: has John buch Gross calling playoff games. He's not very
- 17:21Speaker 1: he's not doing a very good job, like yeah, and
- 17:23Speaker 1: he didn't do a good job in the regular season
- 17:25Speaker 1: because he's not how a play by play guy, right?
- 17:27Speaker 1: Why not just use a play by play guy to
- 17:29Speaker 1: do that? Because at the whole point you show up
- 17:31Speaker 1: to watch these games, you're trying to watch the game.
- 17:33Speaker 1: I don't care who's calling the game as long as
- 17:35Speaker 1: they they're doing their job. I'm not gonna tune in because,
- 17:38Speaker 1: oh John bucchi Gross is calling this game. He's he's
- 17:40Speaker 1: a young whipper snapper, Like I want to watch the
- 17:42Speaker 1: hockey game and have it told to me by professional.
- 17:45Speaker 1: I don't care if it's like the minor league guy
- 17:47Speaker 1: from Rockford, Illinois who's calling like the HL games there. Um,
- 17:50Speaker 1: And I think that these networks have this this preconceived
- 17:53Speaker 1: notion about fans that like they're gonna think it's really
- 17:55Speaker 1: cool that we have Katie Nolan calling an MLB Baseball
- 17:58Speaker 1: game when you know she's not a play by play person,
- 18:01Speaker 1: so it's it's it's not gonna work out. Here's what
- 18:03Speaker 1: you need to understand about television executives. This goes for
- 18:08Speaker 1: studio shows. This goes for broadcast booths. They believe that
- 18:14Speaker 1: whoever is hosting the show, whoever is the analyst for
- 18:17Speaker 1: the show, whoever is in the play by play booth,
- 18:21Speaker 1: that's the most important thing in the world, because that's
- 18:24Speaker 1: what they're working on. They don't get that the only
- 18:28Speaker 1: people who care about studio shows are them and the
- 18:32Speaker 1: league's they're servicing. The only people who care about what's
- 18:36Speaker 1: happening pregame in the NFL, pregame in NBA are the
- 18:40Speaker 1: league executives who have to be responsible for the relationship
- 18:43Speaker 1: with their broadcast partners, and the television executive themselves. No
- 18:47Speaker 1: one else gives a fuck. I think for the play
- 18:50Speaker 1: I play, I think that matters a little bit more
- 18:53Speaker 1: Like you'll see Trey Aikman and Joe Buck them being
- 18:57Speaker 1: in the booth likely gives ESPN a better broadcast schedule, right.
- 19:02Speaker 1: It brings more gravitas to Monday night football. You get
- 19:05Speaker 1: a better broadcast schedule, then all of a sudden you
- 19:07Speaker 1: can make more on the commercials on that job. Right,
- 19:10Speaker 1: Like the sponsorship levels, the dollars go up incrementally. I'm
- 19:15Speaker 1: gonna pay for the hundred and four million dollars they're
- 19:18Speaker 1: paying for Joe Buck and Troy Hickman by a virtue
- 19:20Speaker 1: of getting a better schedule and then getting higher sponsorship dollars.
- 19:24Speaker 1: That's when it matters. But like mostly Moon gives a
- 19:27Speaker 1: fun yeah. And the people who do actually are the
- 19:30Speaker 1: ones that are just watching the game, right, And they're
- 19:32Speaker 1: not gonna say, oh, this is an incredible play by
- 19:34Speaker 1: play performance. They're gonna say, uh, this one sucks. It's there,
- 19:38Speaker 1: there no one. It's like refereeing, Like nobody leaves the
- 19:40Speaker 1: arena saying those rests are fantastic tonight. They say they
- 19:43Speaker 1: sucked or they don't mention them at all. And they think.
- 19:45Speaker 1: It's the same thing with play by playing people. And
- 19:47Speaker 1: I guess, for some reason, whoever is booking these things,
- 19:50Speaker 1: like I guess, like you said, like they're doing it
- 19:52Speaker 1: for themselves, not the you know, millions of people who
- 19:54Speaker 1: are watching, or hockey's case, the hundreds of people who
- 19:57Speaker 1: are who are watching we want that job. All you
- 20:00Speaker 1: gotta started doing is giving away a T shirt for
- 20:01Speaker 1: an overtime goal score buddy, and that job yours. The
- 20:07Speaker 1: playoffs are heating up and you can make every game

- 21:57Speaker 1: We don't talk about Canada. People will say, you guys,
- 21:59Speaker 1: never talking about Canada. Nothing against Canada. Love that Vladim
- 22:02Speaker 1: Greyer Jr. He's the man. Okay, I might hate the Raptors,
- 22:05Speaker 1: And now I'm thinking I really do hate the Raptors.
- 22:08Speaker 1: They've affected my life. That was a Philadelphia fan leave off.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Who am I betting on from Canada? Am I taking
- 22:14Speaker 1: Toronto or the Oilers? For real? Like I want to
- 22:16Speaker 1: get serious about that for a second. But we do
- 22:18Speaker 1: have to preface for people who don't know. John Taveri
- 22:21Speaker 1: is one of the greatest Islanders ever famously famously turned
- 22:26Speaker 1: his back on on the New York Islanders and went
- 22:29Speaker 1: to Toronto. In the entire time I have known Mike Leeboff,
- 22:33Speaker 1: his animosity for Taveras and the Maple Leafs has only grown.
- 22:38Speaker 1: The hatred he feels cannot be contained in a single podcast,
- 22:42Speaker 1: so I really do have to ask him, Like, the
- 22:45Speaker 1: Leafs are ten to one right now to win the
- 22:47Speaker 1: Stanley Cup. That is, those are pretty short odds, probably
- 22:51Speaker 1: fourth lowest right now. After you know, you got the Panthers,
- 22:56Speaker 1: you got the Avs, I forgot who was next, and
- 22:58Speaker 1: then you got the the Maple Leaves. How are you
- 23:02Speaker 1: managing this? Not well? Not well at all? Like they
- 23:06Speaker 1: won last night. They looked good. Um they're a good team. Um.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Our producer of this podcast Matt Mitchell knows, like you know,
- 23:14Speaker 1: every night I just kind of will text him and
- 23:16Speaker 1: a couple of people in this group chat that are
- 23:18Speaker 1: hockey fans, one of whom is from Montreal doesn't like
- 23:21Speaker 1: the Leaves either. Um, and I just fret about. I mean,
- 23:24Speaker 1: it's starting in god damn like maybe like December. I'm like,
- 23:27Speaker 1: this is the year that they're going to win the Cup.
- 23:28Speaker 1: And um, I always tell people from Toronto that are
- 23:31Speaker 1: Maple Leafs fans that I really wouldn't care if the
- 23:34Speaker 1: Maple Leafs win Stanley Cup, they go on a run
- 23:37Speaker 1: like went four or five in a row as long
- 23:39Speaker 1: as he's not there, right, because that just validates his
- 23:41Speaker 1: his decision, especially because the Islanders have had so much
- 23:44Speaker 1: success without him, which people did not think was coming.
- 23:48Speaker 1: And Uh, your your boys over at dead spin, On
- 23:51Speaker 1: famously wrote an article previewing the season right after he left,
- 23:55Speaker 1: was like ranking the thirty one NHL teams from best
- 23:58Speaker 1: to Islanders. And then that year Barry Shots came in
- 24:00Speaker 1: and the Islanders went to a great uh on a
- 24:03Speaker 1: great run it against the odds, and they've been stable
- 24:07Speaker 1: since then this this year notwithstanding. So it's been validating
- 24:10Speaker 1: from that point to know that, like we didn't really
- 24:13Speaker 1: need him, um, and now that he is on this team,
- 24:17Speaker 1: which you know, he's not the focal point of this team.
- 24:19Speaker 1: They have incredible players like Austin Matthews are gonna win
- 24:22Speaker 1: the m v P. Mitch Marner's incredible, they have a
- 24:25Speaker 1: deep defense. Now. UM, so it's it's a little frightening,
- 24:29Speaker 1: but he's he's a bit part player. But I don't
- 24:32Speaker 1: take any solace in that, like if he's if he
- 24:34Speaker 1: wins as the captain of the leaves, um, that that
- 24:37Speaker 1: will be a nightmare for me. And uh, I'm dreading
- 24:42Speaker 1: it big time. So yeah, but I'm like, they're good.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I think honestly, ten to one is probably right about
- 24:48Speaker 1: fair for their for their odds, especially since they one
- 24:51Speaker 1: game one. But but to move on from that, and
- 24:54Speaker 1: I'm trying to my to do my best in general
- 24:57Speaker 1: to move on from that. Um to answer I'm his question,
- 25:00Speaker 1: I think the Oilers still are are worth a shot.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Like they lost last night, uh to the to the
- 25:06Speaker 1: Kings in game one, but they've been a really good team.
- 25:08Speaker 1: And on our hockey betting podcast, Line Change, which you
- 25:12Speaker 1: can listen to every Monday Wednesday, and Friday morning during
- 25:16Speaker 1: this part of the playoffs, my co host known as
- 25:19Speaker 1: so many Sports, has been banging the drum on the
- 25:21Speaker 1: Oilers for a long time, and they made a coaching change.
- 25:25Speaker 1: They've they've had a really good new manager bounce Uh
- 25:28Speaker 1: and their their results are not a fluke right like,
- 25:31Speaker 1: their defense is improved and they're getting good goaltending, which
- 25:34Speaker 1: is what they usually don't get and why they flame out.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Like Simon was mentioning before with with other teams having
- 25:41Speaker 1: trouble getting the monkey off their back in terms of
- 25:43Speaker 1: playoff performances, like the Least are definitely one of them.
- 25:46Speaker 1: They have an advanced past the first round since two
- 25:47Speaker 1: thousand and four and the Oilers with Connor McDavid have
- 25:50Speaker 1: done it once in his career um and they were
- 25:53Speaker 1: slept in the first round last year. Is a big favorite.
- 25:55Speaker 1: So the problem has been the goaltending and forty year
- 25:58Speaker 1: old Mike Smith has been really good this season. And
- 26:01Speaker 1: he I mean, I know you you probably won't know
- 26:04Speaker 1: who he is, but he's just he's a journeyman goalie
- 26:07Speaker 1: who for some reason the Oilers keep going back to
- 26:10Speaker 1: despite his inconsistent season. He's he's an absolute maniac, but
- 26:15Speaker 1: he's he's been good in in in his age forty season.
- 26:18Speaker 1: And then last night, you know, finally gets everybody on board,
- 26:21Speaker 1: saying like this guy is gonna do it, Like he
- 26:22Speaker 1: looks like he's informed going into the playoffs for the
- 26:24Speaker 1: first time and god knows how long, and he laid
- 26:28Speaker 1: a dot in game one, which was horrifying. Uh, because
- 26:31Speaker 1: I bet the oiler. I was betting the oilers with
- 26:33Speaker 1: my buddy, so money, and uh, but I'm still believing
- 26:36Speaker 1: in them, which is probably not a good idea. So Uh.
- 26:41Speaker 1: In the NBA, would you hate? They're just I don't.
- 26:44Speaker 1: I don't actively. I just don't find it entertaining. I
- 26:48Speaker 1: don't find it entertaining at all. Dude. It's I just
- 26:51Speaker 1: I could I choose to kind of ignore it more
- 26:53Speaker 1: than like, I don't go out of my way to
- 26:55Speaker 1: hate it. I think when people say, oh, you hate
- 26:56Speaker 1: the n B A that sounds like I'm like going
- 26:58Speaker 1: around and like yelling at people, being like, how can
- 27:00Speaker 1: you like the sport? I'm just saying I like to
- 27:02Speaker 1: ignore it completely. So in the NBA, which you pretend
- 27:06Speaker 1: doesn't exist, there is a famous theory called the zig
- 27:11Speaker 1: zag theory in which you used to bet the opposite
- 27:15Speaker 1: side of the results from the night before, and then
- 27:18Speaker 1: bookmakers eventually caught onto it and and sort of have
- 27:21Speaker 1: adjusted lines over the past decade to uh to combat
- 27:27Speaker 1: this exact theory. Is there an NHL version of the
- 27:31Speaker 1: zig zag theory sort of speak, I guess, like, for example, tonight,
- 27:36Speaker 1: the Avalanche they're big favorites against the Predators, the Flames
- 27:39Speaker 1: are big favorites against the Stars. Let's say those two
- 27:42Speaker 1: teams blow out the underdogs, I mean the Panthers and
- 27:44Speaker 1: the Capitals. You will see like a big overadjustment h
- 27:48Speaker 1: for game two based on on the score from Game one.
- 27:52Speaker 1: So let's say you know that I think the Predators
- 27:54Speaker 1: right now like plus two sixty they lose six one
- 27:56Speaker 1: tonight to the Avalanche. They might close like three to
- 27:59Speaker 1: one in game two, and right there, that tells you
- 28:02Speaker 1: you're getting forty cents of value because the betting market
- 28:04Speaker 1: already told you how these two teams should close right there.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Playing in the same venue. Injuries, of course, like if
- 28:09Speaker 1: there's an injury or whatever. This this point is mood,
- 28:11Speaker 1: but like it's if it's the same rosters in the
- 28:13Speaker 1: same venue playing each other forty eight hours later, didn't
- 28:16Speaker 1: the market already tell us what this number is supposed
- 28:18Speaker 1: to be. UM, So you can you can have success
- 28:21Speaker 1: going that way, you know, backing teams off of blowouts
- 28:26Speaker 1: because you're going to get a better number, because better
- 28:28Speaker 1: is as we know, are are pretty reactionary cats. So, uh,
- 28:31Speaker 1: you can you can kind of strategize that way, I think,
- 28:35Speaker 1: and and some matchups that's just that's the phenomenon won't
- 28:38Speaker 1: happen Like the rangers of Penguins are really tight, that
- 28:41Speaker 1: the leaves and the lightning are really tight, So you
- 28:42Speaker 1: just won't see the markets really over adjust no matter
- 28:45Speaker 1: what the score from the previous game was. We've seen
- 28:47Speaker 1: that actually with with Boston and Tampa losing handling Game one,
- 28:50Speaker 1: that the numbers are not moving much from from where
- 28:54Speaker 1: they were. So in the right matchups you will you
- 28:56Speaker 1: will see that come to fruition. I think we got
- 28:58Speaker 1: to get your final picks. Where are you landing who's
- 29:03Speaker 1: gonna win? Give us your best odds, your give us
- 29:07Speaker 1: the team you think is gonna win, and give us
- 29:09Speaker 1: the team that, um you sort of think has the
- 29:13Speaker 1: most future value. UM. Well, first, I'm gonna use this
- 29:17Speaker 1: time to to pat myself on the back for betting
- 29:20Speaker 1: the Calgary Flames before the season to one there. I
- 29:23Speaker 1: think third favorite there, that team you couldn't remember. I
- 29:25Speaker 1: don't know if you even know that that team exists. Honestly,
- 29:28Speaker 1: their Calgary Flames. Dude, it's cal Gary and uh number one,
- 29:33Speaker 1: number two. I will never forget the Calgary Flames because
- 29:39Speaker 1: when I was growing up, back when they didn't wear
- 29:42Speaker 1: helmets playing hockey, the Calgary Flames made the Stanley Cup.
- 29:45Speaker 1: I think it was like the mid eighties, and you know,
- 29:49Speaker 1: this is when young Blood came out. And so my
- 29:53Speaker 1: friends and I you'll see how cool we are. Like
- 29:56Speaker 1: at lunch, we would do fake hockey fights and like
- 30:01Speaker 1: pull each other's jerseys over our heads, and someone inevitably
- 30:05Speaker 1: pretended they were playing for Calgary. That's how we got
- 30:08Speaker 1: all the ladies. Yeah, this might have been like freshman
- 30:13Speaker 1: sophomore year and we'd say, like we'd be like, yo,
- 30:18Speaker 1: you want to go pretty boy? Because that's what they
- 30:20Speaker 1: said to Rob Low, right, let's go pretty boy. And
- 30:26Speaker 1: then like he had to prove it to Cynthia Gibb,
- 30:28Speaker 1: who you know, got a little naked in the uh
- 30:32Speaker 1: in the in the barn there and uh and those
- 30:36Speaker 1: were the days when we were loving hockey. Young Bud
- 30:38Speaker 1: has probably done more for for hockey than any sports
- 30:41Speaker 1: movie in the history of sports movies has done for
- 30:43Speaker 1: their particular sport. What a launching pad for careers. Rob
- 30:46Speaker 1: low Swazy was a Kano Reeves was in there, so like,
- 30:51Speaker 1: God blessed that movie. But yeah, the Flames. I think
- 30:54Speaker 1: the Flames are the team that I would pick to
- 30:55Speaker 1: come out of the West, but in turns and then
- 30:58Speaker 1: I like the Bruins to come out of the East.
- 30:59Speaker 1: And I think the Bruins. They've lost game one of
- 31:01Speaker 1: their series, their plus one seventy right now in the
- 31:04Speaker 1: series line, and they're still around twenty one to win
- 31:06Speaker 1: the Stanley Cup. The Bruins are really, really good. People
- 31:09Speaker 1: just haven't really been paying attention to them much because
- 31:12Speaker 1: the other three teams of their division kind of just
- 31:14Speaker 1: ran away from them right up the gates, and so
- 31:16Speaker 1: they were kind of just in the spot in there
- 31:19Speaker 1: that they ended up in the first wild card spot
- 31:21Speaker 1: all season. So they were very uninteresting from a narrative perspective,
- 31:24Speaker 1: but they're underlying metrics are quite good. They have the
- 31:28Speaker 1: playoff pedigree, great defense and the goaltending failed them last night,
- 31:32Speaker 1: but for for the most part the season has been
- 31:34Speaker 1: above average. So I like Boston from a futures perspective.
- 31:37Speaker 1: I like Edmonton from a futures perspective at eighteen to one,
- 31:40Speaker 1: now that they've lost, I like them on their series
- 31:43Speaker 1: line minus one and a half. I like to minus
- 31:45Speaker 1: one and a half in Game two. Their team that
- 31:47Speaker 1: can get separation really easily. So those are the teams
- 31:49Speaker 1: I'm targeting mostly in terms of future value is Boston
- 31:53Speaker 1: and Edmonton. But I would pick Calgary to come out
- 31:56Speaker 1: of the West and Boston to come out of the East.
- 31:58Speaker 1: So I'm meeting at anything else. Yeah, I was gonna ask,
- 32:01Speaker 1: what what is the best hockey movie in the world? Well,
- 32:04Speaker 1: you can go first, what's your favorite hockey movie? Because
- 32:06Speaker 1: I just have thee pop in my head and while
- 32:08Speaker 1: we were talking, well, look, there's like the classic, which
- 32:11Speaker 1: is slap Shot. Obviously old time hockey, Old time hockey.
- 32:17Speaker 1: You're ruing. I love Young Blood even though I probably
- 32:20Speaker 1: haven't seen it in thirty years. Miracle screw this is
- 32:25Speaker 1: your time? Like Miracle is great, but to me, hockey
- 32:31Speaker 1: is so like I loved covering hockey dude. I covered
- 32:35Speaker 1: um the a h L team in Philadelphia that was
- 32:40Speaker 1: playing at the Spectrum after they had opened an right,
- 32:44Speaker 1: so much fun covering hockey. Like to me, hockey is
- 32:48Speaker 1: a sport. It's lyrical, it's romantic, it's a great story
- 32:51Speaker 1: to write about. It's a great story for television, a
- 32:54Speaker 1: great story for a great sport. For movies, the pantheon
- 32:57Speaker 1: of hockey movies is is outstanding. But it's hard to
- 33:02Speaker 1: top slap shot in young Block what you leave off.
- 33:05Speaker 1: You know, obviously grew up on Mighty Ducks. We lost
- 33:08Speaker 1: a few games tough. That was District five. Now we're
- 33:12Speaker 1: the Ducks. The Ducks are undefeated. But there was a
- 33:21Speaker 1: a movie called Manchester by the Sea that came out
- 33:23Speaker 1: a few years ago. Very heartbreaking movie, but there's a
- 33:27Speaker 1: hockey scene in that and it got me blocked by
- 33:29Speaker 1: a prominent NHL agent because there's this They show a
- 33:32Speaker 1: clip of the goaltender yarrowhole Lock, who played for the Islanders,
- 33:37Speaker 1: but they showed him playing for the Blues against the
- 33:39Speaker 1: Bruins and I was like, wow, yahhole Lock just killed
- 33:42Speaker 1: it in Manchester about to Sea. And this agent, Alan Walsh,
- 33:45Speaker 1: he's very quick on the the trigger finger when it
- 33:48Speaker 1: comes to blocking people. So he blocked me for for
- 33:50Speaker 1: lauding his client in his debut. And a couple of
- 33:54Speaker 1: years later I met hall Lock and I told him
- 33:57Speaker 1: about that, and he had absolutely no idea what I
- 33:59Speaker 1: was talking about. Don't know. I think you know, he
- 34:00Speaker 1: knows he was in the movie, um so Manchester by
- 34:03Speaker 1: the Sea for me, he doesn't even know that he
- 34:05Speaker 1: played in the NHL. I think you're about to go
- 34:08Speaker 1: with the Town, which would have made more sense, and
- 34:10Speaker 1: Ben Affleck was a great hockey player in the town.
- 34:13Speaker 1: I was gonna go with the Goon. I can't believe
- 34:15Speaker 1: no one mentioned the Goon. We had a drought there
- 34:21Speaker 1: after the Miracle, no hockey movies, and then the Goon
- 34:23Speaker 1: came in and saved us. So we're different generations here, right,
- 34:28Speaker 1: You guys are basically the same age. So you're talking
- 34:30Speaker 1: about the Goon and Mighty Ducks. Mighty Ducks would have
- 34:33Speaker 1: been one for me. And I'm talking about Slapshot and
- 34:36Speaker 1: young Blood because you know, I'm older. It's why I'm
- 34:41Speaker 1: I'm more vulnerable now that I have COVID, So you know,
- 34:43Speaker 1: I hope I make it to the next podcast we do.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Slapshot is great, but it's it's hilarious now when you
- 34:48Speaker 1: watch it because we're all so sensitive to every little
- 34:50Speaker 1: thing you watch, and you're just like, everywhere that guy
- 34:53Speaker 1: says in that movie is offensive. It's it's really an
- 34:55Speaker 1: incredible performance. You can't do that movie anymore. These guys
- 34:58Speaker 1: are fucking discreat I think. I also think it's the
- 35:01Speaker 1: first movie I ever remember watching, Like, I just remember
- 35:05Speaker 1: watching Slapshot when it's really young. My dad loves it
- 35:08Speaker 1: and sometimes around Christmas, right everyone has yeh exactly. It's
- 35:11Speaker 1: just like I just remember watching Slapshot is a young
- 35:14Speaker 1: bucking just knowing, oh this is slap Shot, this is
- 35:17Speaker 1: a movie, and this is about hockey. Alright, Lee Boff.
- 35:21Speaker 1: You've given us your sad, sad story about the Islanders.
