- 0:04Welcome to The Remodel Report, the show where
- 0:08we figure out what your home actually needs before
- 0:10you spend a dime. I am your host, and today we
- 0:13are talking about the one upgrade everyone wants
- 0:15in 2026, the walk -in shower. I have got our
- 0:20resident bath designer with me. Welcome back.
- 0:23Thank you. Happy to be here. And you are right,
- 0:26the walk -in shower has completely taken over.
- 0:29We pulled 22 ideas together for this one, and
- 0:32here is what is wild. More than half of design
- 0:35pros now say a bigger shower matters more to
- 0:37buyers than keeping the bathtub. People are trading
- 0:41the tub they use twice a year for a shower they
- 0:43live in every day. Okay, before we get to the
- 0:45pretty stuff, give me the big picture. What actually
- 0:48changed? Because my parents' shower from the
- 0:5090s looks nothing like what I am seeing now.
- 0:53Five things changed, really. First, curbless
- 0:56went mainstream. That flat, step -free entry
- 1:00used to be an accessibility request. Now it is
- 1:03the first thing people ask for. Second, big slabs
- 1:08replace little tiles, so the walls have almost
- 1:10no grout lines. Third, the color warmed up, gray
- 1:14is out, warm off whites and sage and olive are
- 1:17in. Fourth, aging in place became a design feature
- 1:21instead of a compromise. And fifth, the shower
- 1:25turned into a wellness room, steam, body sprays,
- 1:30even color changing light. That is a lot, and
- 1:32honestly a little overwhelming if you are just
- 1:34trying to redo one bathroom. So let's make this
- 1:37practical. If someone is starting from scratch,
- 1:40how should they actually plan a walk -in shower?
- 1:43Walk me through it step by step. Love that. Step
- 1:47one, measure your space and pick your size. The
- 1:51code minimum is 30 by 30 inches, but that feels
- 1:53like a phone booth. 36 by 36 is comfortable.
- 1:58And if you want it doorless, you need depth.
- 2:00Plan for about 60 inches from the shower head
- 2:03to the opening, or water goes everywhere. 60
- 2:06inches, got it. That is the splash rule. Step
- 2:082? Step 2. Decide curbless or curbed. Curbless
- 2:13looks clean, and it is the easiest thing in the
- 2:15world to walk into. But the subfloor has to be
- 2:18recessed, so it adds about 20 to 30 percent to
- 2:21the cost. If you go curbless, use a linear drain.
- 2:25That long slot drain, so the floor can slope
- 2:27in one clean direction. So curbless is the dream,
- 2:30but it is not free. Step three. Step three is
- 2:33the one people skip and regret. Solve warmth
- 2:35and splash before the tile goes up. Open showers
- 2:39lose heat. That is the number one complaint.
- 2:43So add radiant floor heating, keep at least a
- 2:46partial glass panel, and slope the floor a quarter
- 2:48inch per foot toward the drain. One glass company
- 2:52even says about 40 % of doorless customers come
- 2:55back later to add a door. So frame the opening
- 2:58now so you could add one without a full remodel.
- 3:00That is such a good tip. Build in a Plan B. Step
- 3:034? Step 4. Choose your tile and materials. Big,
- 3:08large format porcelain on the walls. Fewer grout
- 3:11lines. Way less scrubbing. But on the floor,
- 3:14do the opposite. Use small mosaic or pebble tile.
- 3:18All those little grout lines give you grip so
- 3:20you do not slip. Big slick tile on a wet floor
- 3:24is asking for trouble. Big tile up top, small
- 3:26tile on the floor. Step five. Step five. Plan
- 3:30the features that live inside the wall because
- 3:32you only get one shot. A recessed niche for your
- 3:35bottles, a built -in bench, and a rainfall head
- 3:38paired with a handheld so you can actually rinse
- 3:40the corners. And here is the big one. Even if
- 3:43you do not want grab bars today, have them put
- 3:46solid blocking behind the tile now. Adding a
- 3:49grab bar into bare studs is easy. Into finished
- 3:51tile, it is a nightmare. Future -proofing. without
- 3:54it looking like a hospital. And step six, the
- 3:57one everybody actually wants to know, the money.
- 3:59Right. Step six. Set your budget. A custom walk
- 4:04-in shower runs about $6 ,000 to $12 ,000 installed,
- 4:08with most mid -range builds landing around $7
- 4:10,000 to $11 ,500. A basic prefab is under $4
- 4:14,500. Curbless adds that 20 % to 30%. And a full
- 4:19wellness shower with steam and slab walls can
- 4:22run $15 ,000 to $30 ,000 and up. And does it
- 4:25pay you back when you sell? It does. A mid -range
- 4:28shower remodel returns roughly 70 % to 80 % of
- 4:31its cost. And homes with a shower as the main
- 4:34bathing option sell for about 10 % more, which
- 4:37works out to around $1 ,500 more on average.
- 4:41Just keep at least one tub somewhere in the house
- 4:43so you do not scare off families with little
- 4:45kids. Okay, that is the whole playbook in six
- 4:47steps. Now give me your favorites from the 22,
- 4:51the ones you would put in your own house. For
- 4:53a small bathroom, the corner walk -in with a
- 4:55single fixed glass panel, it keeps the room open.
- 4:59For a modern look, frameless glass with one wall
- 5:01of large format stone, that quiet luxury feel.
- 5:06And my personal favorite, the styled curbless
- 5:08shower with a teak bench, a heated floor, and
- 5:11brushed brass grab bars that double as towel
- 5:14rails. It is the one design that works just as
- 5:17well at 75 as it does at 35. That last one is
- 5:20the future, honestly. If people want to see all
- 5:2322 with photos and the full cost breakdown, where
- 5:26do they go? Everything is on the article. Just
- 5:29search USA cabinet store, 22 walk -in shower
- 5:32ideas. And if you want a real plan for your space,
- 5:35they do a free design consultation, bring a photo
- 5:38of the look you want, and they will tell you
- 5:40what it takes to build it. Perfect. Measure first,
- 5:43decide curbless. solve warmth and splash, pick
- 5:46your tile, build in the features, then set your
- 5:49budget. That is your walk -in shower in 2026.
- 5:53Thanks for breaking it down. Anytime. Happy remodeling,
- 5:56everyone.
