- 0:00What's up everybody, Mike Cunningham here at the Nike
- 0:03Outdoor National Meet, also the USATF U20 meet right here in
- 0:06Hayward Field. We're going to be bringing you
- 0:09little mini podcast all week Thursday, Friday, Saturday and
- 0:13Sunday with coaches here in the coaches Hospitality sponsored by
- 0:16Gill Athletics and then Thursday today is actually also sponsored
- 0:19by MF Athletics. So join us here.
- 0:21We're going to have a good time as we have these amazing youth
- 0:24athletes competing for for trips on the Team USA and for All
- 0:29American here at the Nike Outdoor National meet.
- 0:31So let's get started with our first interview.
- 0:34All right, we got our first victim of day one here at the
- 0:38Nike Outdoor National meet. Why don't you introduce yourself
- 0:40and who you are here with? I am shake of others and I'm
- 0:43here with the Revelation Track Club.
- 0:45Out of beautiful Memphis, TN Yeah before we hit recording I
- 0:51told you as in starting at least to fly out of Memphis.
- 0:54Actually one of my and I gosh I cannot remember her name.
- 0:56One of my top hit athletes ever. She was a multi time all
- 0:59American in Mississippi State. Was from Memphis back in the day
- 1:02around 00506. Marissa, I remember she was
- 1:07awesome. So here we are, we're beautiful.
- 1:10Hayward Field at the Nike Outdoor National USATF U20 meet
- 1:14as well. What what brings you here to
- 1:15Eugene? What do you got going?
- 1:16On On the Track we have one child representing Revelation in
- 1:20the 100m and the 200m, so we're here to take the title.
- 1:26Memphis is known for its speed. Yes, we are in BBQ.
- 1:30And BBQ, you know, I think you looked at me and saw, well, I
- 1:33know he eats a lot of BBQ. So yeah, I, I get it.
- 1:35I get it, I get it. Now, I'm always curious, you
- 1:38know, from an outside perspective, this weekend and
- 1:41and I think maybe next weekend, there's a lot of meats that you
- 1:43guys could have gone to. There's one up in Philly, one in
- 1:46North Carolina, things like that.
- 1:47Why? Why here in Eugene, OR?
- 1:49Because Nike is the best. If you could see I have a little
- 1:54tiny mic in my hand. I almost dropped the mic for
- 1:56Shay. That's that was pretty, pretty
- 1:58evident. Well, Shay, thank you so much
- 1:59for being here. We're so grateful for what you
- 2:01do as a track coach. If you don't do what you do, we
- 2:03can't do what we do. And so we're just so thankful
- 2:05for you. Thank you too.
- 2:06Thank. You all right, let's keep the
- 2:09interview train going. Let's see who we got next here.
- 2:11Why don't you introduce yourself?
- 2:13We got we actually have a 2 firm this one.
- 2:15Introduce yourself to what track club you're here with and we'll
- 2:17go from there. Phillip Williams, Team All Star,
- 2:20Dallas, TX. Dallas Coach Nation Team All
- 2:23Stars, DeSoto, Texas the same track club.
- 2:25Same track club. Now I, you know, I'm not the
- 2:29greatest person in the world with track and field, but I know
- 2:31Texas literally and figuratively brings the heat.
- 2:34What are you doing here in Eugene?
- 2:36What's got you excited here on day one of Nike Outdoor
- 2:38Nationals? Day one in Eugene we have
- 2:40Kennedy Jackson out of DeSoto, Texas running 100 for the
- 2:44freshman group. Right now she's sitting in 3rd
- 2:46going into the finals with the 11/7 I believe it is.
- 2:52A freshman 11/7, You know what they call that in other states?
- 2:56State champ. I mean, holy cow.
- 2:58Oh, yes, Sir. Yes, Sir, yes, Sir.
- 2:59What? About you.
- 3:01What's got you here? Yes, overall we have like a lot
- 3:04of good quality athletes that we're here for.
- 3:06Diario Porter Moore jump 57 for indoors.
- 3:10Kerrigan McEwen is another eighth grade girl.
- 3:12She ran 59 one Albany Brumsey around 101.5 in the 400 meter
- 3:18hurdles. So overall we we're pretty
- 3:20loaded, you know, and we're young.
- 3:22Why is it, you know, I was talking about Texas and you
- 3:25know, of course there's been, there's at least one, maybe 210
- 3:28flat, sub 10 flat guys. I mean, 1016 I think was second.
- 3:32Yeah, yeah. 10/6, 10:16 and you're in second.
- 3:35I mean, what in the world's going on here?
- 3:37Why do you think, You know, as we look around all the other
- 3:39States and there's some great states, right, California,
- 3:41Florida, etcetera, Illinois, where we're from, there's some
- 3:44great kids, but Texas just seems to have just another notch about
- 3:48what? What is it?
- 3:49What? Why Texas?
- 3:50I I think it's a good weather and a good training because we
- 3:53do everything step by step and we take care of the little stuff
- 3:56so you can get better. And it's not a lot of egos in
- 3:59Texas like people think there are.
- 4:00It's not. Is that true?
- 4:03Because I know some guys from Texas and they rightfully have
- 4:07some egos. I believe Texas is so big,
- 4:09especially in our area. You have a lot of great teams in
- 4:12different cities. We compete against each other,
- 4:13but when we come to meets like this, we're determined to whip
- 4:16up on other states by bringing some of our top athletes
- 4:19together to do that. So I have attended and hosted an
- 4:24MC, the Texas Track and Field Coaches Association winter, you
- 4:28know, the January meeting many, many years now, great people.
- 4:31And you know, that's actually, that was a good correction you
- 4:33gave me when I said I've known some guys with some egos.
- 4:35You're right though, when it's comes out of state, it is.
- 4:39It's Texas versus the world. Yeah, in state we have small
- 4:43egos, but because we know, hey, they might see each other every
- 4:46week going to the state track meet.
- 4:48So hey, I got to bring my A game and not my CAB game and then
- 4:51hey, I might not be on the podium.
- 4:54Well, gentlemen, thank you so much for being here.
- 4:56We're so grateful that you are track coaches and track clubs.
- 4:58I mean, it's really vital for our sport and we're happy to see
- 5:01you here in in Eugene, OR. I'm I coach at Dallas Carter,
- 5:04the world greatest high school at Secure Richardson School.
- 5:08And my name is Phillip Williams, the founder of Team All Star,
- 5:11and our goal is to get the kids the opportunity who don't have
- 5:14the funds to run and have fun. Love it, guys, from all the
- 5:18athletes and parents and from us as a equipment manufacturer,
- 5:21we're just totally grateful that that's your your life work
- 5:24there. I do appreciate it.
- 5:24Thank you, guys. All right, the hits keep coming
- 5:29here. Let's go straight to our next
- 5:31interview here. Coach, won't you introduce
- 5:32yourself and tell us who you're representing this weekend?
- 5:34Hi, I'm Andy Flaum. I'm the coach for the Menlo
- 5:37Atherton Athletics Club based out of Northern California.
- 5:41I think I've met and it's just a one and we're only like 2 hours
- 5:45in. I think I've met maybe 60
- 5:46coaches so far and I bet you 59 of them are from California.
- 5:49Does California just is this the whole West Coast thing?
- 5:51Maybe, although I noticed that our in the relays we're in, it's
- 5:54like 6 out of 36 teams across the heats are from California.
- 5:58So we actually, you know, maybe not dominating once the meet
- 6:01gets further along. Yeah, well, you guys dominate.
- 6:03It's one of our top states, that's for sure.
- 6:05No worries. What's up?
- 6:12Yeah, Carmen, she saw that distance over there.
- 6:15Yeah. You gave that away?
- 6:17Yeah. Someone took it.
- 6:18Yeah, that was somebody could take that.
- 6:20I got another one. Yeah, I don't.
- 6:22I have one. That school, he's got nothing.
- 6:25Yeah. Five men in the NFL.
- 6:27Oh, yeah, I know. I know her well.
- 6:28Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:30Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:30Yeah, Yeah. I'll get her taken care of.
- 6:32Yeah, I will. Yeah, I'll get her taken care
- 6:33of. I'll figure something out.
- 6:34Yeah. Thank you, boss.
- 6:35And So what you got going on here?
- 6:36What, what? What events and what kids?
- 6:38We've got kids in the four by mile 4 by 800, boys and girls 4
- 6:43by 404 by 100, so a lot of relays.
- 6:45And we've got a hurdler, a girl who's hurdling in the 100
- 6:48hurdles and the 400 hurdles. You know there's not an
- 6:51unpopular opinion that maybe track and field should be all
- 6:54relays. Well, our team does a good,
- 6:57enjoys them and it's a great way to get more kids involved,
- 7:00especially at a meet like this. Bring some kids who otherwise,
- 7:02you know, wouldn't be able to get into an individual event,
- 7:05but as a team they run strongly. And it's, it really embodies the
- 7:08real true team spirit of, of track and field as well.
- 7:12And why? And maybe it's obvious because
- 7:13you're from California. So it's maybe, maybe easier, not
- 7:17easy travel. Why here in Eugene for Hayward
- 7:19Field versus, you know the other options that you have out there?
- 7:22We do get some great options in California, some of the meets,
- 7:25what happened there, the high school meats and other meats
- 7:27that you can get into as a high schooler.
- 7:29But this is unique. It's, you know, unparalleled to
- 7:32be able to be here at Hayward Field.
- 7:34And we get to take kids who are maybe a senior who's finishing
- 7:37their career. This is the capstone on their
- 7:38career. And we get kids who are up and
- 7:40coming and they get a taste of what it could be like to do
- 7:43bigger things than just the meats we get right around us on
- 7:45a daily basis. That's been a common
- 7:47conversation of like helping kids see that whether you're the
- 7:50best in your state or not. But hey, there is a a much
- 7:52bigger world for track and field, and guess what, you can
- 7:54compete as well. And it's exciting for them to
- 7:56see, you know, last week and CA as were being held right here.
- 8:01You know, other years it's been the Olympic trials right after
- 8:03this happens. And so they get they have an
- 8:05image of this track and of what goes on here.
- 8:08And to be able to step into it themselves is a special and
- 8:11inspiring experience. You're, I love that imagery of
- 8:14just, you know what we had here last week with Insta AA
- 8:18championships and these kids are running the same lanes, same
- 8:20hurdles, same pits, same relays. It's, it's quite amazing.
- 8:24Andy, thank you so much. We're grateful for you being a
- 8:25track coach. You know, I'll say it a million
- 8:27times and I mean it every single one.
- 8:28If you don't do what you do, we can't do what we do.
- 8:30So we're truly grateful for you all.
- 8:32Right. Thank you very much, Mike.
- 8:33Appreciate it. All right, let's move on to our
- 8:37next interview. Here, why don't we introduce
- 8:38yourself and tell us who you're representing?
- 8:40Hi, my name is Tanya. I'm with the team All Stars.
- 8:42We come here from Dallas, TX and we bought a good little batch of
- 8:47kids here at least that's been excelling there and we wanted to
- 8:51come here and let them see how the big stage look.
- 8:55Now we had a couple of of your cohorts earlier in today's
- 9:00episode. How do you fit in with those
- 9:02two? They were actually very cordial,
- 9:04very good. They they behave themselves.
- 9:05How do you fit in with that group?
- 9:07We. Fit in great with the one that's
- 9:09with AP Rich. She's a former the Nitro and we
- 9:14all ran together. And the third place is Action
- 9:16All Star. Is that right?
- 9:18That's that, That's right. We brought the heat from Texas.
- 9:20That year we talked a lot about that, about the, you know, Texas
- 9:23and you guys, it's Texas versus the world.
- 9:25What's got you most excited? You know, this is a long meet,
- 9:27it's four days and you know, every meet, every heat, every
- 9:31race, every jump is just the top of the top around here.
- 9:33What's got you excited about this week?
- 9:35I'm very excited because everything here is beautiful, is
- 9:38well organized and the and the kids get to come and see
- 9:42something different and see what's to offer if they continue
- 9:45to work hard, what they can look forward to.
- 9:48That's been a kind of a theme with a lot of coaches is
- 9:51exposing kids that, you know, whether you dominate or don't
- 9:54dominate your area, the area is much bigger than you think and
- 9:57there are other kids and you know what you could fit in here.
- 9:59That's. Right, yes.
- 10:01And that's the motto that I give them.
- 10:04They put their pants on just like you.
- 10:05You could you go out there and you work hard.
- 10:06You can do the same thing that they can do.
- 10:09And your pain is only your weakness that's coming out.
- 10:12So I want you to continue to work hard and work through that
- 10:14pain, and you're going to get there.
- 10:17I might have been a better track athlete if you were my coach,
- 10:19and I love my coaches, but I might have, I might have been
- 10:22able to get a little extra step there.
- 10:23Tonya, thank you so much for being here.
- 10:25This is day one of Nike Outdoor Nationals and USATF Under 20
- 10:28U20, and we're just exciting. We're so grateful for you being
- 10:31a track coach because if you don't do what you do, I don't
- 10:33get to do it. I do.
- 10:34So thank you so much. Thank you too, and we look
- 10:36forward to visiting with you again.
- 10:38Absolutely. Thank you, Tanya.
- 10:41All right here for our next interview.
- 10:43This is going to be our first. This is our first college coach
- 10:45here on day one of the Nike Outdoor National Championships
- 10:48USATF U20 meet here. So I'm going to start by asking
- 10:51you introduce yourself and what college are you at?
- 10:54Yeah, my name is Tyler Burdorf. I coach the throws at the
- 10:57University of Maryland. So this is the Nike Outdoor
- 11:00National High School Championships and it is U20.
- 11:04So I know there's, you know, there's some college kids that
- 11:06are under 20. What are you?
- 11:07What are you doing here? Yeah, so got a freshman on the
- 11:11guys side through the hammer this morning in EU 20
- 11:15Championships. Didn't go our way, but but
- 11:18that's OK. It's still a good experience for
- 11:21him. He's competed out here before in
- 11:23some of the USATF, the Junior Olympic meets, and so it's kind
- 11:27of cool for him to come back. His dad was out here and then
- 11:31I'm sticking around. They're leaving tomorrow and I'm
- 11:33going to stick around and do some recruiting at Nike.
- 11:36First time being out here for the Nike meet.
- 11:39Normally stick around a little bit more local and Philly for
- 11:41the New Balance meet, but yeah, I'm excited for it.
- 11:44Well, thank you for saving me the follow up question of how
- 11:46the kid did. I'm sorry it didn't go your way,
- 11:48but I'm but I'm curious because, you know, we were here last week
- 11:51for NCAA's and you know what a it's just a crazy me to to
- 11:55qualify for etcetera. Is a kid who so that kids kind
- 11:58of specifically is a kid who qualifies for the U20.
- 12:00Was that kid at NCAA's or no? No, no.
- 12:04And actually he didn't even make first round.
- 12:07Yeah, so last year had another girl in the discus here.
- 12:13She did qualify for first round last year, but I think she
- 12:16finished 19th at first round. So she didn't make it out to to
- 12:19NCAA's. And then yeah, this year even, I
- 12:23guess worse, he didn't even make first round.
- 12:27I think he was something like 20, maybe 30th at Big 10 out
- 12:32here. And but it's still a huge
- 12:36opportunity for him to come out here and and perform or try to
- 12:39perform with with these guys. And also like, good for him to
- 12:42know like, hey, you know, you might have been 30th or
- 12:45something at Big 10. You might not have made the NCAA
- 12:48first round meet, but you're still one of the best in your
- 12:52age group. And so you got you got a lot of
- 12:54potential and you got a lot of big things coming.
- 12:56But yeah, just a a good experience for him and a good
- 12:59way to cap his his freshman campaign that.
- 13:02That that's what I was thinking. It was less about him and his
- 13:04athletic, but he's obviously a study.
- 13:05He's here for U20. That's not everybody doesn't
- 13:08make that meet. And so that he didn't even you
- 13:10know, if he didn't make incident Blaze, that's one thing because
- 13:12again, it's crazy to make it, as you well know, didn't even make
- 13:16first rounds. Again, I think that just speaks
- 13:18to the quality of the NCAA coaching and the athletes like
- 13:21that. That amazes me.
- 13:22And that he was like, you know, 20-30, whatever in Big 10, which
- 13:25that's become a that's not even a conference meet.
- 13:28That is just a a mini nationals is what Big 10 and ACCS and SCCS
- 13:32have all become. So so I'm going to ask you a
- 13:35question that I know you can't answer.
- 13:36So who who are you recruiting? Who are you looking at?
- 13:39Yeah, it's funny. I think like you talked about
- 13:42the NCAA and where we're going and you know, the performances
- 13:47are so high and you still have a a kid out here who is one of the
- 13:51best U20 but can't make NCAA first round in this first year.
- 13:56And so, yeah, I'm interested. I'm looking at juniors,
- 13:59obviously, you know, watching seniors, but most of them are
- 14:02kind of already done, but looking at juniors to try and
- 14:05try and see some talent. Always keeping an eye out for
- 14:07sophomores. So I get get names on the radar.
- 14:11I think these are big needs for me to to see names, see people
- 14:14move, see how they move, how they throw.
- 14:18And then, you know, it's an easy one.
- 14:19If they're a young kid, I can follow them on Instagram.
- 14:21And then hey, I get to see you for the next couple years until
- 14:24you get to that point where you're looking to start your
- 14:28recruiting process. And so no names in specific, but
- 14:32I'm excited to be out here and kind of see some of the throws
- 14:34and it's cool with the the two different comps, you know, being
- 14:38able to see some people and, and I I don't get a lot of chances
- 14:42to see people from the West side, West Coast.
- 14:45And so this is this will be good for me there.
- 14:47I think we can. We can pull some people over to
- 14:49the East Coast. Last question, specifically with
- 14:52the hammer, like when you're recruiting meets like this and
- 14:55there's very few opportunities for you to see high schoolers
- 14:58who throw the hammer for many reasons.
- 14:59We don't have it in any state except for one.
- 15:02Are you still in in When I say are you, I'm talking general.
- 15:06Maybe you know your peers and other college coaches.
- 15:09Are you, are you recruiting the majority of your hammer throwers
- 15:14who have experience or are you still teaching from square one,
- 15:18day one in the hammer specifically because again, it's
- 15:22so underdeveloped here in America.
- 15:23However, you know, we're better today in the hammer high school
- 15:27youth development than we were yesterday.
- 15:28So what's the majority of your incoming hammer throwers?
- 15:31Are they newbies you're teaching from day one, or do they
- 15:34actually have some experience? Yeah, I think it's a a mix of
- 15:38both. I, we have a guy who's our
- 15:41school record holder who was a Rhode Island guy.
- 15:43So he threw in high school, but you're throwing the 25 LB
- 15:46weight, you're throwing a 12 LB hammer.
- 15:49And so a little bit different there.
- 15:51And then Finn, the guy that I have had here, he was mainly A
- 15:56discus shot put out of Indiana, but he had an ugly two turn that
- 15:59he had picked up doing Jo stuff. And you know, I think he
- 16:03actually sent me a video of one of those Jo meets here and I was
- 16:08able to see how he moved and it was like there's something there
- 16:11in the hammer. And it was cool to see him then
- 16:12progress from throwing an ugly two turn.
- 16:14We added two turns to that and he 4 turned all year and and did
- 16:18great for us so. You mentioned Rhode Island.
- 16:21I wonder how many colleges, school records are held by Rhode
- 16:25Island natives. You know, that's a lot because
- 16:28they've had a long, long tradition there.
- 16:31And then it's interesting you mentioned Indiana there.
- 16:33There's a a swelling in Indiana for the hammer throw as well.
- 16:36So I appreciate that. So Tyler, thank you so much for
- 16:38being here, man. I hope you get every kid that
- 16:40you want and they all become terps for you there.
- 16:42OK, Earlier in the podcast, I told you it's Thursday.
- 16:47It's day one here in Eugene, OR and that means that it's MF
- 16:50Athletics day. We're partnering with our great
- 16:52partners close to Rhode Island from our last guest there, but
- 16:56definitely out in New England and just doing a fantastic job.
- 16:58And so here I have. Well, I'll let you introduce her
- 17:01because I don't know what last name she actually goes by these
- 17:03days. Well, let's let's find out.
- 17:05I'm Lisa Browning with the new last name and I work for MF
- 17:09Athletic. And Lisa, how long have you been
- 17:13with MF? I mean, what I'm amazed by you
- 17:15guys is you guys have long tenured people.
- 17:19I think that says a lot about your leadership in your company.
- 17:21How long have you been there? So I'm the quote baby of the
- 17:24group and I've been there now for seven years.
- 17:26I started in 2018, yeah. That's that's awesome.
- 17:32And I love that, that you're the that you're the young in there.
- 17:34Yeah, I I really do love that. And all the MF guys and gals
- 17:38typically come from the track background.
- 17:40They had some kind of background there, whether they were
- 17:43athletes or coaches. What was your background?
- 17:45Yeah. So I competed as an athlete,
- 17:48high school, college, post collegiate, and I've coached
- 17:52high school, done a little, middle school, college, I've
- 17:55done everything you could I guess.
- 17:59And you also threw the hammer pretty well I believe.
- 18:02Yes, so I threw the hammer after college.
- 18:06What's funny is when I actually started with MF athletic, I was
- 18:09in a retirement phase. So I actually was not competing.
- 18:13I was coaching only hadn't competed for a couple of years.
- 18:16And then while I worked for the company during the pandemic is
- 18:19actually when I did my my second journey of competing post
- 18:22collegiately and had my magical few years of.
- 18:27And if any of that sounded interesting, you can actually
- 18:30look on right here the Guild Connections podcast.
- 18:32We actually, at least as an alum of the Guild Connections
- 18:34podcast. And so I think we were an hour
- 18:37and a half, you know, we go pretty deep.
- 18:39So that small snippet of her journey, you can go hear the
- 18:42whole journey and trust me, it's worth it.
- 18:44Her journey was really important.
- 18:46It's really kind of amazing and cool to see where you are today
- 18:49based on, you know, where where you started.
- 18:51You know, it's it's interesting. MF Athletics, one of our top
- 18:54dealers around and you guys represent the Gill athletic
- 18:57brand extremely well. Super proud and honored to have
- 19:00you guys represent us. What's it mean?
- 19:02And you know, maybe this is like some kind of, as the guy from
- 19:04Gill, this is some kind of like, you know, oh magical question.
- 19:07Like because we're, you know, we're, we're amazing people and
- 19:10all that kind of stuff. But what's it like selling Gill
- 19:12equipment? How do you like the partnership?
- 19:14And you know, if anything goes wrong here, I'm just going to
- 19:16turn this into your boss. It's great to be partnered with
- 19:20a company that sells good products and that has such a big
- 19:22name brand. Our company's been around for 60
- 19:24years, but we didn't sell big equipment till more, I would say
- 19:28recent, which is still decades, but partnering with another
- 19:30company that's been around 1918, I believe is the day.
- 19:34Hey, hey, I got my facts down. I didn't even prep for this.
- 19:39And you know, just having that big name brand and being able to
- 19:42offer something quality that coaches know and expect, it's
- 19:46awesome. I imagine if I asked my team
- 19:50what year we were founded, I don't know that we bat 100% they
- 19:53knew 1918. So that's that's super cool.
- 19:56I will turn that into your boss and say, you know what, this is
- 19:58a advocate for us here. Well, we're super proud of MF
- 20:02athletics. We love partnering with you here
- 20:03at Nike Outdoor Nationals and other, you know, we do other

- 20:11your partner and call you guys friends and just just so
