- 0:08Welcome to TWO SHOT Tuesday. My name is Jason Riley, and with
- 0:11me, as always, Barry T Nixon, a man who is in control of his
- 0:15environment and in control of himself and in control of all
- 0:18things that bring entertainment to the masses.
- 0:20Aren't you Barry? I'm I'm in control of at least
- 0:22myself for the time being. Those other things, I don't
- 0:25know. I think that's up to.
- 0:27That's up to God and you. Jay.
- 0:28Thanks for making time before me again this week.
- 0:31I would do it just like I've done every week for the past six
- 0:34years because we, you know, we release on a record on a
- 0:37Tuesday, release on a Tuesday. We are barreling down to episode
- 0:40300. It is coming up sooner than you
- 0:42can think. But before that, we've got some
- 0:45pretty exciting episodes coming up like this one right here
- 0:47today that we're recording. And as always, we have a format
- 0:51on this show. Barry, I know you've got
- 0:53something going on tonight. Why don't you tell our listeners
- 0:55and viewers what you're having? As your shop, you know Jay, I've
- 0:58been on a bit of a kick with having my workouts on the same
- 1:03day as our podcast recording. Why?
- 1:05Because I like to be busy. I like to have two fun things to
- 1:08do in an evening. It doesn't get much more fun
- 1:10than that. That's just a long way of saying
- 1:12I'm not drinking any alcohol. I'll be having some pre workout.
- 1:16You can kind of see it right there.
- 1:17That's the Godzilla piss that I like to drink before I pump the
- 1:21iron. What about yourself?
- 1:23I've worked out earlier this morning and so I'm going to
- 1:27reward myself for a a day with it.
- 1:31What used to be our favorite Jameson triple triple.
- 1:35It's been, you know, pushed aside again by the black barrel.
- 1:39But this is what was at the local and I'm happy to have it
- 1:42and still do enjoy it. So in your honor, Good Sir
- 1:45Jameson, triple, triple. Amazing.
- 1:47Cheers. I also kind of feel like that
- 1:51was a short love affair with the triple triple.
- 1:53I think we were just liking the fact that we could call it.
- 1:56We like the name of it. You and I are very like in
- 1:58similar in that way. If something has a good name, a
- 2:01name that's fun to say, it's suddenly rock us to the top of
- 2:04our favorites list. And I think that's what happened
- 2:06with triple triple. But then it kind of went away it
- 2:10it's. Am I misremembering or no?
- 2:12No, it sounded so much more fun because it's kind of like when
- 2:15you overdo it at Tim horton's and you get the triple, triple
- 2:18cream and triple, triple sugar, right?
- 2:20It's like that triple cream, triple sugar that I never really
- 2:22had, but it was always. Popular.
- 2:23I don't know anyone. Construction workers for some
- 2:26reason and maybe. That makes sense.
- 2:28Will often have the triple, triple.
- 2:30They're burning a lot of calories and they need the
- 2:32energy. So I would see a lot of those
- 2:34ordered ahead of me, especially in Sudbury.
- 2:36Sudbury is a triple, triple town and you know it.
- 2:39You know it when you're in Sudbury.
- 2:40The triple triples are flying. It's worth going to Sudbury just
- 2:44to witness that, I think. Yeah, I'll be there.
- 2:46I don't have my my, my booking yet, but at some point this
- 2:50summer I'll be going back to visit mom and dad.
- 2:51So I know exciting we're getting.
- 2:53The trip shout out to Millie. Shout out to Millie, friend of
- 2:55the show. Barry, what's coming out?
- 2:58I got a pen out now just as a little prop because I want to
- 3:00point at you. I want to point at that shirt
- 3:02you're wearing. What is happening very soon?
- 3:05You know, based on the time of our recording.
- 3:07Jay, the biggest sporting event on planet Earth is about to be
- 3:12descending towards Toronto. We are one of the host cities,
- 3:16one of the host countries. And when people are visiting, I
- 3:20just want to make it clear to fans visiting, it's great to
- 3:22have you, but you're not at home.
- 3:25You're still visiting. So please, you know, treat the
- 3:28area with respect, OK? Because I've seen some previous
- 3:31World Cups where host cities get trashed.
- 3:33They have to deal with a lot of bad behavior.
- 3:35Now, I would, I would hope that that wouldn't happen here in
- 3:38Toronto. I do live right beside the
- 3:40epicenter of where this tournament is happening.
- 3:42Jay, you're nicely tucked away in the annex.
- 3:44There's no games going on anywhere near you.
- 3:47You're probably going to be insulated for the most part from
- 3:49some of his madness. However, Linda and I, right in
- 3:53the left ventricle of the hardest thing.
- 3:55Am I complaining? No.
- 3:57I can't wait. Well, why don't you get into
- 3:59that a little bit because you've already told me what is
- 4:02happening there is you are getting the VIP treatment.
- 4:05I don't think we've talked about it on the show.
- 4:07Why don't you explain the pass system to our audience and what
- 4:11you'll be going through the privilege of going through over
- 4:14the next little while as you live where the athletes breathe?
- 4:17Please yes. We haven't gotten the passes, so
- 4:20I'm not sure I should even raise it because I don't know whether
- 4:23now it's even going to be a thing.
- 4:24It will be. You think so?
- 4:26I think so. Please share.
- 4:27I I'm excited for you because I've reframed this for you and
- 4:30that also makes me happy. You have reframed because I
- 4:33first looked at it as an imposition and I didn't think it
- 4:36was a great idea. But apparently the people who
- 4:39who live in my building and the neighboring condos next to Fort
- 4:43York, again the epicenter of the fan festival, are going to be
- 4:46issued residence cards to keep on their purse at at all times
- 4:50in order to access your building.
- 4:53You will also have to have one on your vehicle if you have a
- 4:56vehicle to be able to come in and out.
- 4:58Now when I was first told this, my knee jerk reaction was one of
- 5:02disgust and shades of East Germany were crossing my mind.
- 5:06But then I sat down with my good friend Jay and he reframed it.
- 5:10He he'd put it into AVIP context and that changed everything for
- 5:15me. Yeah, because you get to what?
- 5:17When you're walking somewhere, they're going to stop you.
- 5:20But you hold up your card, you tap it against maybe an
- 5:23electronic device of some kind, and they will say.
- 5:26Just the helmet of the person stopping me, but we'll see.
- 5:28Yeah, they will say right this way, Mr. Nixon.
- 5:32They might not say your name, but right this way, Sir, and you
- 5:35will be allowed to go where other people have no access.
- 5:39You are going beyond the best access because you get to go
- 5:43home. As I said, you live where the
- 5:46athletes, even the athletes themselves, are only able to
- 5:49come and go. You'll be there 24/7 if you so
- 5:52choose. And I so choose because it is by
- 5:55a domicile. I have no other place to rest my
- 5:57weary head, Jay. But you know, whatever that's
- 6:00going to be, that's part of it. It's going to be fun.
- 6:02You've reframed for me. We are going to be expecting I
- 6:06think like another half million to 1,000,000 visitors from
- 6:09around the world during the six matches that Toronto was
- 6:13hosting. And it's going to be a month
- 6:14long, Jay, even after the matches are not being played
- 6:17here any longer, the fan fast and all of the hoopla, I feel
- 6:21pardon expression will continue all the way to the World Cup
- 6:24final. So it's about a month, 5 weeks.
- 6:27Do we have any? There's no final matches here.
- 6:29Are we like a qualification round?
- 6:31Are we split amongst different rounds?
- 6:33How does that work in Toronto? We will be, we will be in the
- 6:37round of 32. So there's more teams in this
- 6:39World Cup than ever before. So there's 48 teams to begin
- 6:42with, OK, the group stage matches here, some of them.
- 6:46And then there will be a round of 32 match, at least one at
- 6:49EMO. Beyond that, I don't think so.
- 6:51I think all the big ones, the knockout stages are going to be
- 6:54happening in the United States and Mexico.
- 6:57But so it's like 3216842 then you're that's it a winner.
- 7:04I can do math. Soccer is mostly about math.
- 7:07I played soccer as a child, by the way, so I'm not new to the
- 7:10sport. I have played soccer.
- 7:13Millie would vouch for you. My strategy was to run up the
- 7:17side of the field and run back the side of the field, rarely
- 7:20touching the ball. There was just it's.
- 7:21A good strategy. Yeah, it's something that I
- 7:23didn't do. I wasn't excited about it was I
- 7:25found it hard to manage the ball.
- 7:28I I was really not much of an athlete.
- 7:30So I would just charge up to the front.
- 7:32I'd let somebody else get it. They would kick it back and I
- 7:35would go back. Here's something I don't know
- 7:37and maybe you know this and can explain this to me and our
- 7:39listeners and viewers. Sure.
- 7:41I don't understand how offsides works.
- 7:43Hockey is very simple. How does soccer or football
- 7:47offsides work? Barry, please let.
- 7:49Us know basically the same. It's just a different size
- 7:51pitch, different size playing fields.
- 7:54So you the if you do not have the ball, you cannot have
- 7:58somebody ahead of you who doesn't have it.
- 8:00It's the same principle. It's just because the field is
- 8:02so much larger, they call it at a different place on the field.
- 8:06But there's no line like. There's no.
- 8:08Blue line. There's a line up here of the
- 8:10line. That's what I'm saying.
- 8:12But once you watch enough games, you you kind of get to know
- 8:15where it is and it's at the often it's at the discretion of
- 8:18the official it. Is OK look kind of like how the
- 8:21clock never stops it just it never is going and then it goes
- 8:24into overtime and it just goes in the ad time that's I find
- 8:28that to be a very elegant way of playing things just keep going
- 8:32that's. Why they call it the Beautiful
- 8:33game? Do they?
- 8:33Call it that. Yeah.
- 8:34Who does? Everybody.
- 8:36Is that a? Thing everyone.
- 8:37Everyone but you. OK, everyone.
- 8:40That's great. It's called the Beautiful Game.
- 8:42Yeah, because of that. And they do add time.
- 8:45They call it stoppage time just so you know, for things like
- 8:48injuries, because we also know that soccer players are
- 8:50tremendous actors all the time. They're riding on the floor like
- 8:54they've been shot. And so they might lie there for
- 8:56a while, maybe a minute and a half, maybe longer.
- 8:59And so the officials add that stoppage time.
- 9:04And but again, they can also end the game when they see fit.
- 9:07Sometimes stoppage time is plus 6 minutes, maybe they get to and
- 9:11then they'll they'll add 3 more minutes, but then they might
- 9:14decide now that's enough. I've seen it.
- 9:17It's really arbitrary. It's really weird, unless I'm
- 9:19not fully understanding, which is completely possible, that the
- 9:22matches that I've been into and watched on TV, the officials
- 9:26have all. The power that is incredible,
- 9:27and also that it's called stoppage time, but that nothing
- 9:30actually stops, that's also interesting.
- 9:33Well, I guess, yeah, I guess they it stops when someone is
- 9:36writhing on the ground. Everything stops for a period of
- 9:39time. Not the clock, but that's.
- 9:41It everything stops but the clock, That's interesting.
- 9:44It's kind of like life. Things will stop, but the clock
- 9:46never stops. You just never does.
- 9:49You try and keep up with the clock as best you can.
- 9:51It will take away. It is a monotonous monster.
- 9:54But anyway, enough of that. I think that leads us into our
- 9:57second shot. You know, I want to reach in for
- 10:00it. Perfect timing, Jay.
- 10:01You've got, of course, the same. You're Godzilla piss right?
- 10:04Yeah, yeah, it's nice and hot and frothy and that way.
- 10:07I like it. I've got triple, triple and I
- 10:09want to raise the glass Berry to your VIP experience.
- 10:12You are going to go where few people in the city are.
- 10:15There may be a lot of people in your condo area, but
- 10:18comparatively to the rest of us in the city and in fact the
- 10:21nation in the world, we won't have that kind of access that
- 10:24you'll have. And you get to flash a card and
- 10:27go where those of us cannot, places that I hope you'll be
- 10:31reporting back to our audience on as we go through this World
- 10:34Cup. The only place is my own home.
- 10:37I'll be thrilled to have access to my own home, Jay.
- 10:41I'm excited for you buddy. Cheers, this is harsh stuff.
- 10:48So yeah, so that's the fan faster.
- 10:50But there is one other thing I think I did mention that I will
- 10:54be attending a World Cup match. Which is it's.
- 10:57Crazy. It's Germany versus Ivory Coast
- 11:00at BMO Field on June 20th, Saturday afternoon, 4:00
- 11:03kickoff, and they open the gates at noon.
- 11:07Here's a funny thing, they serve.
- 11:09It's called a walk up whenever you like, whatever the time is
- 11:12before the event, those hours before that, it's called the
- 11:16walk up. Sometimes it's a 2 hour walk up.
- 11:18In this case it's a four hour walk up.
- 11:20The game doesn't start till 4, but the open BMO Field at noon.
- 11:24Why do they do that? To serve alcohol.
- 11:26Why? Because halftime is last call
- 11:30there. This is very European, very kind
- 11:32of draconian. They want people to get
- 11:34completely blasted in advance of the match.
- 11:37And then slowly, I guess the thought is you sober up as the
- 11:40game wears on and by the end of it, you're good to drive home
- 11:44because you haven't drank in 45 minutes.
- 11:45You know what I mean? It's it's wild.
- 11:47Anyway, we're going to experience this live at BMO,
- 11:51Germany and Ivory Coast, Me and my friend Brad and his son
- 11:53Peyton. And yeah, it's fantastic.
- 11:56We're all, we're 8 rows from the pitch, from the field, 8 gross.
- 12:01So that's very good. So we're like, like, it's as
- 12:04close as you could probably want to be.
- 12:07And we're like just high enough you can see all the action you
- 12:10don't want to. Be also seven you're in with
- 12:12let's like 1. Would have been great. 87 would
- 12:14have. Been you're higher than 7 which
- 12:15is nice. You can see over the sevens.
- 12:18It is so anyway. For you amazing, I'll eat this
- 12:20for you it's. Going to be great.
- 12:23Sunnyside, like Bmo's got that side that the sun blasts on you
- 12:26if it's in the afternoon or the shady side what side we're on
- 12:29the. Shady side.
- 12:30That is beautiful. I've been in the Sunnyside for
- 12:32some CFL games and you just on a really hot day you just can't be
- 12:36there like you have to be. We would go to one of the bar
- 12:38areas but I have feeling it was it's much busier at World Cup
- 12:42than during ACFL. Game I would assume, but we
- 12:45don't know. I'm like this is a first, this
- 12:47has never. Been in this country before?
- 12:48You go there at noon, you're in your seats.
- 12:51You're drinking in your seats. Nothing.
- 12:53Things going on and then stuff happens and that's when the bar
- 12:56closes. That's great.
- 12:58Well, they don't. Apparently they they're not like
- 13:00if they stick with the European rules.
- 13:02Like, again, this was one person that I spoke with when Brad and
- 13:06I went to a TFC match about a month ago at the time of this
- 13:08recording. And we were asking questions
- 13:10about what can we expect for the World Cup?
- 13:12We're we're we're coming on for the Germany match.
- 13:14What can we expect? That's when we were told it's a
- 13:17four hour walk up. Last call is going to be half
- 13:19time. And during the match, I think
- 13:22the only service you're going to be able to get if you want to
- 13:24continue is like the guy coming up and down the aisle.
- 13:27But the bars on the concourse are not going to be serving
- 13:30during play. It's very European.
- 13:32That's what they do in England, apparently.
- 13:34Yeah, it is weird. It's because people just get to
- 13:35out of control. But I'm thinking like, but
- 13:37you're giving them four hours of runway to get out of control
- 13:41before the game. So what are we doing here?
- 13:43Doesn't make sense. I would think no it doesn't.
- 13:46And plus the fact that we are now granted, there's going to be
- 13:48a lot of visitors coming in, but there's going to be a ton of
- 13:51people from the city who are used to going to sporting events
- 13:54or, and a ton of people in North America that are used to going
- 13:57to sporting events and consuming alcohol the North American
- 14:00sporting event way, which is pacing themselves or not during
- 14:03the course of the regular game. So why all of a sudden shift
- 14:06people? Now you're like, I can see you
- 14:08doing the math, doing the calculation going how much do I
- 14:11need to get in? How?
- 14:13Many. Yeah, should I take 5 to my
- 14:15seat? Because now people are going to
- 14:16be paranoid that wait, you can't even take 5 to your seat.
- 14:19You're allowed two at a time, Jay.
- 14:21That hasn't changed. See, and then people are going
- 14:23to go to their seat and then go back.
- 14:24I think that's going to be not the best thing.
- 14:26I'm not saying don't do it. And I want to hear from you
- 14:30exactly how this went. This is June 20th.
- 14:32You're going to be there at noon.
- 14:34It's like, Yep, it's almost better because you're so close.
- 14:37You could just be at your place just drinking for free and then
- 14:39go. But I know you want the
- 14:40experience of it. Which is that's that's it and
- 14:42it's not just me, it's Brad and his son, but they are both of
- 14:46German heritage. So for them to see the German
- 14:48national team, this is like life changing.
- 14:50This is like the exploding head emoji times a million.
- 14:54Like so. And his son doesn't even know
- 14:56what's happening and you're. Nice.
- 14:58And you're a huge Ivory Coast fan, so I.
- 15:01Know that's. Where is the Ivory Coast?
- 15:03What is? Born and raised, as you know.
- 15:05Yeah. It's somewhere in Africa, around
- 15:08the Horn of Africa, I believe it's, it's a, it's a coastal
- 15:11country, I believe. OK, it's a former French colony.
- 15:15I do know that. Exciting now before we go, I
- 15:18want you to tell you were just telling me before we got on and
- 15:20I said save it for the show. Something about this jersey
- 15:22you're wearing now and and being cat called what?
- 15:26What happened? It wasn't so much that I wore it
- 15:28to the office. And I'm I'm I'm intending I have
- 15:31a bunch of England shirts. I'm going to be wearing a
- 15:33different one all week because we are now like at the time of
- 15:36this recording, about a week and a bit away from kickoff from the
- 15:39tournament. And one of my Irish colleagues,
- 15:42by the way, Ireland did not qualify for the World Cup.
- 15:45So this is maybe why she was a little perturbed, but not didn't
- 15:51take offense, but was wondering and questioning my fashion
- 15:55choices when she saw my England shirt.
- 15:58So of course we know there's a lot of bad blood between Irish
- 16:01and English hundreds of years ago, but I thought we were past
- 16:04it. Clearly there was somebody
- 16:06perhaps who's not past it, and that is her decision.
- 16:10What was said exactly? Nothing really like, nothing
- 16:13like how dare you or you know, you baby killer or colonial,
- 16:18whatever. She's very much a like a
- 16:21left-leaning person. So I think she was thinking more
- 16:23about what is England done to the world is kind of what she
- 16:27said to me. And I was like, I thought we
- 16:29were talking about soccer. We're not talking about politics
- 16:32here. But some people can't separate
- 16:33the two. I thankfully am a little more
- 16:36evolved and I can easily separate those two things.
- 16:38Yeah. And we are.
- 16:40We're better for it as a species.
- 16:42I like to think so. Barry, anyway, I hope you will
- 16:45continue to be our person on the ground as we go through the
- 16:48World Cup. This is a yeah, this is a huge
- 16:50event for us. Only you have got 24/7 access to
- 16:53the grounds and you'll be living there embedded with the
- 16:57athletes. And so I expect the the biggest
- 16:59scoops, the stuff people doesn't don't know about will be coming
- 17:02to two shot Tuesday to get the real story of the World Cup.
- 17:06So I invite viewers, listeners, check us out on YouTube as we go
- 17:11through World Cup fever where Barry takes us through.
- 17:15I think we dedicate at least a portion of every show to
- 17:18touching on World Cup news as only you can see it.
- 17:22And Barry, thank you for giving us this huge preview.
- 17:25I know this ended up being a huge episode on you and on the
- 17:28World Cup, but I am richer for it and so are so are our viewers
- 17:32and listeners. And Speaking of which, we will
- 17:34see you again next week for another exciting episode of Two
- 17:37Shot Tuesday. World Cup fever has caught Barry
- 17:40T Nixon and caught me in its wake, and we hope you'll all
- 17:44come along for the ride. See you next week, Jay.
- 17:48Thank you for listening to Two Shot Tuesday.
- 17:50The show was produced by Barry and I and edited by me.
- 17:53If you have yet to rate and review the show on Apple
- 17:55Podcasts, please take a second to do so now.
