- 0:09Speaker 1: What's up, folks.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Andrew diiceco here with another episode of The Checko Daily.
- 0:14Speaker 2: You may remember I talked about the quarterback room. I
- 0:17Speaker 2: talked about the tight end room. Today we're going to
- 0:19Speaker 2: talk about the running back room. This is a group
- 0:22Speaker 2: that I really like. Going into this season. I'm curious
- 0:25Speaker 2: to see, as I've mentioned many times on this podcast,
- 0:29Speaker 2: how the running game is ultimately going to look as
- 0:31Speaker 2: I expect them to move away from a heavy dose
- 0:35Speaker 2: of the inside zone that was so prominent under Jeff Stotland,
- 0:39Speaker 2: who was the run game coordinator and of course the
- 0:41Speaker 2: offensive line coach, but under Sean Mannion, the new offensive coordinator,
- 0:45Speaker 2: under Ryan Mahaffy, the run game coordinator and the tight
- 0:48Speaker 2: ends coach, I'm expecting to see some tweaks here and
- 0:52Speaker 2: there to reimagine this run game and modernize it and
- 0:56Speaker 2: bring it more up to speed with some of the
- 0:58Speaker 2: other upper echelon offenses across the NFL. But all that aside,
- 1:05Speaker 2: I want to look at the running back room itself,
- 1:07Speaker 2: the pieces that are in its currently and a couple
- 1:10Speaker 2: of prospects that.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I really like.
- 1:12Speaker 2: If the Eagles were to take a swing on Day three,
- 1:16Speaker 2: Saquon Barkley needs no introduction. Even on a down season,
- 1:20Speaker 2: he had about twelve hundred yards. I thought that he
- 1:23Speaker 2: did some good things later in the year. Tough, physical runner.
- 1:27Speaker 2: When he gets to the second level, he's really decisive,
- 1:31Speaker 2: and I think on some of those outside runs he thrived.
- 1:35Speaker 2: But more often than not, you would like to see
- 1:37Speaker 2: him maybe exercise a little bit more patients, allow creases
- 1:40Speaker 2: to develop and then be able to explode and try
- 1:43Speaker 2: to hit the home run there. But I think that
- 1:45Speaker 2: there were a lot of times last season that maybe
- 1:48Speaker 2: he was pressing a little bit when the offense was
- 1:50Speaker 2: sort of stuck in neutral.
- 1:52Speaker 1: And trying to hit that home run that came so
- 1:54Speaker 1: easily for him.
- 1:56Speaker 2: The season before that, he was stuck behind an offensive
- 1:59Speaker 2: line that was ravaged by injuries, and I feel like
- 2:02Speaker 2: Saquon Barkley was trying to get things going and be
- 2:05Speaker 2: that engine that the Eagles really built the offense around
- 2:08Speaker 2: last season and of course the season before, really after
- 2:12Speaker 2: four weeks once Kellen Moore's system needed to get scaled
- 2:16Speaker 2: back a little bit when it wasn't necessarily working, especially
- 2:19Speaker 2: in terms of the pass game. But Sakwon Barkley is
- 2:22Speaker 2: the same guy Landon Dickerson and some offensive lineman has
- 2:25Speaker 2: said that you can watch the games for yourself.
- 2:27Speaker 1: He doesn't look like someone who has lost a step. Not.
- 2:30Speaker 2: The Eagles give him a heavy dose in terms of volume,
- 2:34Speaker 2: so you have to be mindful of that when you're
- 2:36Speaker 2: projecting it out over the next year or two that
- 2:40Speaker 2: the offense is going to continue, at least in my estimation,
- 2:42Speaker 2: to revolve around Saquon Barkley as long as the Eagles
- 2:45Speaker 2: have a healthy offensive line, and he hasn't really shown
- 2:48Speaker 2: any signs of slowing down, which is promising. He is
- 2:54Speaker 2: on top of what he can do on the field.
- 2:57Speaker 2: He is a team leader, someone who is always going
- 3:02Speaker 2: to stand in front and speak win or loss. He's
- 3:05Speaker 2: the consummate professional and one of the many things that
- 3:11Speaker 2: were among the positives of bringing in someone like Saquon
- 3:14Speaker 2: Barkley excuse me, is that he's a culture guy.
- 3:18Speaker 1: He is a.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Positive influence and a lot of folks grew up maybe
- 3:24Speaker 2: not idolizing him, but looking at him as an example,
- 3:27Speaker 2: and I think he's done a really good job of
- 3:29Speaker 2: living up to the expectations and then some since arriving
- 3:32Speaker 2: in Philadelphia. I think if you're looking at it in
- 3:36Speaker 2: terms of things you'd like to see him do better
- 3:38Speaker 2: catching the football with more consistency. He's not a natural
- 3:41Speaker 2: pass catcher. That's not his area of expertise, and there
- 3:45Speaker 2: are areas of opportunity and pass protection he didn't There's
- 3:49Speaker 2: a lot of moments this season and the year prior
- 3:51Speaker 2: where he didn't acquit himself as well as you'd like
- 3:54Speaker 2: to see from a technical aspect, and those are a
- 3:57Speaker 2: couple areas of his game that could stand to be
- 4:00Speaker 2: improved upon. Then you have well, they thought they were
- 4:04Speaker 2: getting this player to be the backup and have that
- 4:06Speaker 2: thunder and lightning, if you will, approach, and that was
- 4:10Speaker 2: aj Dillon. He's going to be a free agent. It
- 4:12Speaker 2: didn't work out for him. He had twelve carries for
- 4:15Speaker 2: sixty yards on the year. I think he played in
- 4:18Speaker 2: Week eighteen. He did play in Week eighteen, but I
- 4:20Speaker 2: think he may have only had one.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Catch for a few yards.
- 4:23Speaker 2: He fell out of favor in that first Giants game
- 4:26Speaker 2: when he misjudged the kickoff fielded it at the five,
- 4:29Speaker 2: stepped out of bounds, and then he fumbled on that
- 4:32Speaker 2: same drive. You didn't really hear from him the rest
- 4:34Speaker 2: of the year. But I know when he was signed
- 4:36Speaker 2: there was a lot of intrigue that maybe he could
- 4:39Speaker 2: be that between the tackles, battering ram as at a
- 4:43Speaker 2: cost effective price, and maybe spell Saquon Barkley if Saquon
- 4:48Speaker 2: needed to miss a game or two. You probably felt
- 4:50Speaker 2: pretty comfortable if Aj Dillon had to start. But I
- 4:53Speaker 2: was never of the belief that he was going to
- 4:54Speaker 2: a serp will Shipley because the Eagles drafted him and
- 4:58Speaker 2: he offered a different mention to the offense, a different
- 5:02Speaker 2: play style that was complimentary, I would say, of what
- 5:06Speaker 2: Saquon Barkley could provide.
- 5:08Speaker 1: But as it.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Were, AJ Dillon played very sparingly this year. You were
- 5:13Speaker 2: encouraged with the fact that he's healthy. He missed the
- 5:17Speaker 2: whole twenty twenty four season with a neck injury. That's
- 5:20Speaker 2: not something to play with, obviously, and I think there
- 5:23Speaker 2: was a lot of concern whether Aj would would be
- 5:26Speaker 2: able to recover from that. He answered all those questions
- 5:30Speaker 2: in training camp. He was able to withstand contact and
- 5:33Speaker 2: he had a solid training camp. He caught a flurry
- 5:35Speaker 2: of passes. He was effective in the preseason operating behind
- 5:39Speaker 2: the reserve offensive line, which is not easy to do.
- 5:42Speaker 2: But in the regular season there weren't Saquon Barkley's shouldered
- 5:46Speaker 2: the Lion's share of the carries as he should. But
- 5:50Speaker 2: aj Dillon, after those miscues, it just never he never
- 5:54Speaker 2: found his way back into the picture. They added Tank
- 5:57Speaker 2: Bigsby of course via trade, and and Will Shipley was
- 6:01Speaker 2: active on game day as a kick returner, a special
- 6:04Speaker 2: teams core player. There wasn't really a room. There wasn't
- 6:07Speaker 2: room for four running backs, and AJ Dillon didn't really
- 6:11Speaker 2: didn't really provide anything in terms of game day value
- 6:15Speaker 2: from that standpoint. And you look, I think when you
- 6:20Speaker 2: look at all the roster turnover last season, you know,
- 6:23Speaker 2: the tinkering with some of the players on the fringes
- 6:25Speaker 2: of the roster and things like that, you probably scratched
- 6:28Speaker 2: your head and wondered why AJ Dillon was on the roster.
- 6:31Speaker 2: But he's a veteran player. Maybe there was an understanding
- 6:37Speaker 2: that he was gonna be on the roster and for
- 6:40Speaker 2: the entirety of the season. You never know, but maybe
- 6:43Speaker 2: that was part of the understanding when he signed, if
- 6:45Speaker 2: he made the team and things like that. He's an
- 6:48Speaker 2: experienced player. You like the insurance there. The Eagles have
- 6:52Speaker 2: sort of kept other players of that mold on the
- 6:55Speaker 2: back end of the roster even if they weren't playing,
- 6:57Speaker 2: because those guys, you're not gonna find them on the
- 7:00Speaker 2: free agent market late in the season should an injury.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Arise or things like that.
- 7:04Speaker 2: So there's a lot of reasons why it makes sense
- 7:07Speaker 2: to keep to have kept him around if it was
- 7:11Speaker 2: if you were able to do so, and they were
- 7:13Speaker 2: able to maneuver around it. He was a really positive
- 7:16Speaker 2: influence in the locker room. I talk about Saquon Barkley,
- 7:19Speaker 2: he caught himself a vibes guy that he wasn't always
- 7:22Speaker 2: like that when he was with Green Bay earlier in
- 7:24Speaker 2: his career. He was so used to being the guy
- 7:27Speaker 2: at Boston College wherever he was high school, and he
- 7:32Speaker 2: had to learn to balance carries with Aaron Jones who
- 7:37Speaker 2: was there, and I think that kind of allowed it
- 7:40Speaker 2: shaped his mindset from the standpoint of, Okay, I'm not
- 7:44Speaker 2: always going to be the bell cow at this level
- 7:46Speaker 2: or at least in this spot, so you have to
- 7:49Speaker 2: find other ways to get you through the day. Be
- 7:51Speaker 2: a positive, upbeat guy that everyone wants to be around.
- 7:54Speaker 2: He certainly was. I know his claim the fame and
- 7:58Speaker 2: his one season with the Eagles is going to be
- 8:00Speaker 2: the positivity bunny. But yeah, I mean that didn't obviously
- 8:04Speaker 2: didn't work out. But aj Dillon I always really enjoyed
- 8:07Speaker 2: my conversation with him, learned a lot, very insightful guy.
- 8:11Speaker 2: And I you know, and you hope for the best
- 8:15Speaker 2: wherever he lands in the off season, but I don't.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I mean, it's not going to be in Philadelphia.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Hey, everyone, I continue to tell you about the importance

- 10:40Speaker 5: percent off.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Now, then you have Will Shipley and will Shipley is.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Obviously going into his third season now, had a really
- 10:51Speaker 2: strong training camp and caught a flurry of passes, whether
- 10:55Speaker 2: it be in the flat from Jalen Hurtz.
- 10:57Speaker 1: He was a very popular target when they would on.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Wheel routs, and you got the sense that, Okay, there's
- 11:03Speaker 2: a defining role for willship we going into the season
- 11:06Speaker 2: because they're really utilizing him with the first team and
- 11:10Speaker 2: the second team, and they're getting him involved more than
- 11:13Speaker 2: they were the prior year. And that just never manifested
- 11:16Speaker 2: in the regular season. In the Dallas game, he had
- 11:19Speaker 2: a couple of nice runs, he got hurt and he
- 11:23Speaker 2: never really factored back into the offensive mix. Then coming
- 11:26Speaker 2: out of the bye week, he was inserted in the
- 11:28Speaker 2: first drive of that Packers game, and you started to
- 11:31Speaker 2: get the sense, Okay, maybe that was part of the
- 11:33Speaker 2: bye week tweak, that you're going to try and get
- 11:35Speaker 2: some other players involved as you're trying to find answers.
- 11:41Speaker 2: But that just that never came to fruition either. I
- 11:43Speaker 2: just thought that he offered a lot, not in terms
- 11:46Speaker 2: of running the inside zone. I don't think that that
- 11:49Speaker 2: really caters to his strength. I do think that if
- 11:51Speaker 2: they do more outside zone stretch play type of runs,
- 11:54Speaker 2: that could play into his favor a little bit. But
- 11:57Speaker 2: I was a little surprised that when the offense is
- 12:01Speaker 2: struggling like that and you don't have many cards to
- 12:04Speaker 2: play at a certain point, you have somebody there who
- 12:07Speaker 2: can run routes, he can catch the football, get him
- 12:09Speaker 2: in space a little bit, maybe you're able to kind
- 12:12Speaker 2: of provide some kind of instant spark. But that just
- 12:15Speaker 2: never it never came to fruition. So this is going
- 12:18Speaker 2: to be obviously a big year for Will. He's a
- 12:20Speaker 2: core special teams player, can return kicks. We'll see if
- 12:23Speaker 2: the Eagles at a player at the skill position that
- 12:26Speaker 2: can double as a returner and maybe give you a
- 12:28Speaker 2: little bit more of a dynamic presence there. And I
- 12:32Speaker 2: just think that maybe with Sean Mannion and you know,
- 12:36Speaker 2: they're able to to sort of carve out more of
- 12:39Speaker 2: a role for Will as a change of pace, complimentary
- 12:43Speaker 2: action type of running back. He's not a physical runner.
- 12:49Speaker 2: He doesn't run with a ton of power between the tackles,
- 12:52Speaker 2: that's for certain. When he's had his opportunities, he hasn't
- 12:55Speaker 2: necessarily run with it. And look, I look at the
- 12:59Speaker 2: late game of the season, he barely got any run,
- 13:02Speaker 2: which I thought was a little curious.
- 13:04Speaker 1: It was the tank Bigsby show.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Thought they might do a little bit more of a
- 13:07Speaker 2: one to two tandem. So yeah, that's kind of the
- 13:11Speaker 2: outlook going into twenty twenty six with Will, who those
- 13:15Speaker 2: listening know that I know very well, got to know
- 13:18Speaker 2: him over the past couple of years. Another player that
- 13:22Speaker 2: I would talk to once a week, just catching up,
- 13:24Speaker 2: even if it had nothing to do with football. We
- 13:26Speaker 2: would talk about, you know, life, We talk about different restaurants,
- 13:31Speaker 2: different things we watched and exchange things that were that
- 13:35Speaker 2: were in our queue and put each other onto some
- 13:37Speaker 2: of that type of stuff, and you know, I really
- 13:40Speaker 2: value those conversations. So all that being said, that is
- 13:44Speaker 2: the outlook going into twenty twenty six. Then you have
- 13:47Speaker 2: Tank Bigsby. Tank Bigsby is a very interesting player this year.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Later in the year, you saw the value he adds
- 13:56Speaker 2: a spark. He runs with a lot of toughness and
- 13:58Speaker 2: tenacity and can viction. He is not necessarily a patient
- 14:02Speaker 2: runner by any means, but he will see the hole
- 14:05Speaker 2: and he'll hit it, and if and one's not there,
- 14:07Speaker 2: he's going to create it. I do believe that you'll
- 14:11Speaker 2: see a little bit more opportunities for him this season
- 14:15Speaker 2: as they maybe try to lighten the load for off
- 14:19Speaker 2: Saquon Barkley, who has just been a belcow for two years.
- 14:22Speaker 2: He's getting a little bit older, late twenties there, and
- 14:26Speaker 2: Tank Bigsby. I asked Sakwon Barkway about this late in
- 14:30Speaker 2: the year, he said, I don't even view him as
- 14:31Speaker 2: a change of pace complementary guy. I view him, as
- 14:34Speaker 2: you know, on the same level. So that's high praise
- 14:36Speaker 2: there obviously, But I think you saw what Tank can
- 14:40Speaker 2: do in a minimal sample size.
- 14:43Speaker 1: It's it's a really good change of pace.
- 14:48Speaker 2: I would say, I think there should be a world
- 14:50Speaker 2: in which he gets six to eight carries a game
- 14:53Speaker 2: and can give you a different type of skill set
- 14:57Speaker 2: when you and defenses have to play and maybe a
- 14:59Speaker 2: little bit more differently than they ordinarily would with Saquon
- 15:03Speaker 2: back there, and I think he's going to have some
- 15:05Speaker 2: upside in this offense going into next season. I'm really
- 15:09Speaker 2: looking forward to seeing what he can do now that
- 15:11Speaker 2: we'll get to see him for training camp, which we
- 15:14Speaker 2: didn't get to see last year. He gets the full
- 15:16Speaker 2: off season with the Eagles, another year with Jamal Singleton
- 15:19Speaker 2: as position coach, which I should also mention is coming back,
- 15:23Speaker 2: as I'm sure you've already gleaned by this point. I
- 15:25Speaker 2: mentioned it on this podcast. So you like the continuity
- 15:28Speaker 2: there from that standpoint, and the room will be together.
- 15:32Speaker 2: That's a very tight knit room, by the way, and
- 15:34Speaker 2: they're all very close. They talk, Their lockers are all
- 15:38Speaker 2: right beside each other, except for Tanks. Tanks was on
- 15:41Speaker 2: the other side next to Fred Johnson. But you had
- 15:46Speaker 2: aj Dillon, you had Will Shipley, and then you had
- 15:48Speaker 2: Saquon Barkley left to right, and then on the other
- 15:51Speaker 2: side of that was tank, so I imagine they'll be
- 15:53Speaker 2: closer together this season. Then I look at the draft
- 15:59Speaker 2: because whether or not the Eagles draft are running back
- 16:02Speaker 2: or they sign one a as an undrafted free agent.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Last year they brought in Shanderrik Powell and Montreal Johnson Junior.
- 16:10Speaker 2: And Montreal Johnson Junior did some really good things, got
- 16:13Speaker 2: hurt in training camp and spent a little bit of
- 16:16Speaker 2: time on the practice squad, But he's sort of had
- 16:19Speaker 2: a lot of different tryouts last year. I'm not exactly
- 16:22Speaker 2: sure if he's landed with the team yet, But whether
- 16:25Speaker 2: or not they draft one or not, I think you're
- 16:28Speaker 2: going to see one or two more added to the
- 16:30Speaker 2: roster here.
- 16:31Speaker 1: And there's a couple in the draft that I like.
- 16:33Speaker 1: I look at k Tron Allen.
- 16:34Speaker 2: If you're a Penn State fan, which I know Jeff Mosher,
- 16:37Speaker 2: Penn State alum, proud Penn State alum, will like that.
- 16:41Speaker 2: I'm mentioning him here, but I really liked the body
- 16:44Speaker 2: of work that I saw from him in college. He
- 16:46Speaker 2: rushed rover thirteen hundred yards last season, fifteen touchdowns. Was
- 16:50Speaker 2: in a backfield committee with Nicholas Singleton, who really took.
- 16:54Speaker 1: The lead there.
- 16:55Speaker 2: But kay Tron Allen at five eleven, two hundred and
- 16:57Speaker 2: seventeen pounds, he's more of a between the two tackles
- 17:00Speaker 2: grinder can help you in the short yardage game. I
- 17:03Speaker 2: don't know that he offers a lot of home run
- 17:05Speaker 2: hitting explosiveness or pass catching ability. But if you're looking
- 17:09Speaker 2: for a cost effective thumper between the tackles who has
- 17:12Speaker 2: a lot of college experience, Kitron Allen would be an
- 17:15Speaker 2: intriguing guy. Probably gonna go early day three, and then
- 17:19Speaker 2: I go to Jamari Taylor from University of Virginia if
- 17:23Speaker 2: you're looking for more of a player who's not necessarily
- 17:27Speaker 2: in the same mold or category as Saquon or Tank
- 17:32Speaker 2: bigs B. He's more along the lines of an undersize
- 17:36Speaker 2: receiving running back.
- 17:37Speaker 1: He's electric.
- 17:38Speaker 2: He rush for over one thousand yards last year, caught
- 17:40Speaker 2: forty three passes. That's gonna be the key, because I
- 17:43Speaker 2: wonder whether or not under Sean Mannion there's going to
- 17:46Speaker 2: be more of a focus to get the running backs
- 17:48Speaker 2: involved in the passing game. That's another layer that the
- 17:52Speaker 2: Eagles haven't tapped into. And I think when you look
- 17:55Speaker 2: across the NFL, those high flying offenses in corp break
- 18:00Speaker 2: the running backs in the passing game.
- 18:02Speaker 1: It's a really good way to get your quarterback.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Settled into the flow of the game, get them an
- 18:06Speaker 2: easy completion, allow your running backs to take advantage of
- 18:10Speaker 2: the open field and pick up yards there and keep
- 18:12Speaker 2: the offense on schedule. For whatever reason, whether it was
- 18:16Speaker 2: Miles Sanders, DeAndre Swift, Saquon Barkley, will Shipley, Kenny Gainwell,
- 18:22Speaker 2: they all have dazzled catching the football and training camp,
- 18:25Speaker 2: but in the regular season it's been largely absent from
- 18:29Speaker 2: the playbook. That's something that I would imagine they're going
- 18:32Speaker 2: to try to work in as this offense looks to
- 18:35Speaker 2: head in a different direction.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,

- 20:53Speaker 2: So those are the running backs. And I even gave
- 20:57Speaker 2: you a couple guys who I really like. By the way,
- 20:59Speaker 2: Jamari Tower will probably be mid to late day three
- 21:04Speaker 2: guy because of his diminutive stature, but and because he's
- 21:09Speaker 2: not going to be a volume runner, He's going to
- 21:11Speaker 2: be in a committee, change of pace type of guy
- 21:14Speaker 2: that I think any team would really like. I think
- 21:17Speaker 2: of a team like the Kansas City Chiefs that would
- 21:20Speaker 2: love to have a player like that, or the San
- 21:22Speaker 2: Francisco forty nine ers and the Rams. So the Eagles
- 21:27Speaker 2: need a player like that. I happen to think that
- 21:29Speaker 2: Will Shipley can do that, can catch the football and
- 21:33Speaker 2: you know, factor in sporadically and give you that different
- 21:37Speaker 2: type of look. But if they want to add some competition,
- 21:40Speaker 2: if they want to add another player, yeah, Jamari Taylor
- 21:44Speaker 2: is one that I would.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Take a hard look at.
- 21:45Speaker 2: And look, I'm under no impression given all the other
- 21:50Speaker 2: needs and the Eagles are well set at running back
- 21:52Speaker 2: in my estimation anyway, that they would draft a player
- 21:55Speaker 2: on Day two. This would be purely for Day three
- 21:57Speaker 2: if there's a player that they like and want to
- 21:59Speaker 2: add to the room. I wanted to give you guys,
- 22:01Speaker 2: at least a couple of names that would be realistic.
- 22:03Speaker 1: I don't know that they need to even go that route.
- 22:05Speaker 2: They could probably go the undrafted free agent route, sign
- 22:08Speaker 2: a player or two and allow them to kind of
- 22:10Speaker 2: compete for a roster spot if they can play on
- 22:13Speaker 2: special teams or even a practice squad spot. But I
- 22:16Speaker 2: think the running back situation right now is pretty well set.
- 22:19Speaker 2: But I kind of wanted to just give you an
- 22:20Speaker 2: overview as I kind of see it. Right now, and
- 22:24Speaker 2: we'll see where it goes from here. There's going to
- 22:26Speaker 2: be a lot of time between now and Mini camps, obviously,
- 22:30Speaker 2: so a lot can change, But for now, that's the
- 22:32Speaker 2: way I see it, that's going to do it for
- 22:33Speaker 2: this edition of the Czech Odily. I'm Andrew Dechecko. We'll
- 22:37Speaker 2: catch you all on the next one.
