Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:15the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:20Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:22This is the last Mini Scroll of a 2024.
- 0:26It is a light Newsday, unfortunately.
- 0:28I was really hoping for like some giant story to come out
- 0:31that I could get into with you guys.
- 0:34I still have three stories, but nothing super juicy.
- 0:37But before I start, I did want to say a huge thank you to you
- 0:40guys for making this year so seamless for me.
- 0:44You know what? I was worried, obviously doing
- 0:47the podcast by myself that we would lose a lot of audience and
- 0:50we did. We did lose a lot of our
- 0:52audience initially because the vibe is just so different,
- 0:54obviously being so low versus having a Co host.
- 0:58But we found so many new audience members this year.
- 1:01Like the podcast growth has been absolutely insane this year,
- 1:04largely because of YouTube. And I'm just so grateful to
- 1:08anyone that found us this year and you know, has made mini
- 1:11scroll part of your daily routine.
- 1:13Anyone that stuck around from the OG days when I had a Co host
- 1:18and you know, now the vibe is different, but you've stuck
- 1:21around. Like I'm just so grateful for
- 1:22this year and I just think it's so cool that I get to basically
- 1:28do my dream job every single day.
- 1:30Like I built my dream job, I'm building my dream company.
- 1:36And it's so cool that every single day I get to share the
- 1:40news with you guys and dissect Internet culture, social media
- 1:43trends. Sometimes it's petty, sometimes
- 1:46it's more serious. But either way, like this is a
- 1:48literally my dream job and I am so grateful that you guys let me
- 1:52do it, that you guys have allowed me this opportunity by
- 1:55following along and supporting us and being super sweet when we
- 1:58have sponsorships and things like that.
- 2:00Like all of that makes a giant difference.
- 2:03And yeah, it's been a really crazy year, but it's been an
- 2:06awesome year. And it's just, it's really cool
- 2:09to be like sitting here in this podcast studio in an office that
- 2:13I pay for, like the business pays for because I've grown a
- 2:16company that can afford to have an office space, can afford to
- 2:19have staff to help me close these deals and help me build
- 2:22the business so I can do 5 podcasts a week.
- 2:25Like all of these things are just so cool.
- 2:27And I am so grateful for everything you guys have done
- 2:30for me and for Centennial and Infinite Scroll mini scroll this
- 2:35year. All right, without further ado,
- 2:37let's get into the stories for today.
- 2:40So the first story that I have for you guys, it's a bit of A2
- 2:43parter. There is speculation right now
- 2:46on TikTok that the Kardashians are going to buy the app.
- 2:51OK, so there is this rumor spreading around on TikTok over
- 2:54the last couple of days that the Kardashians are trying to buy
- 2:57the app to stop it from being banned in the US.
- 3:00This rumor was started by a small creator whose handle is
- 3:03NEVRCRD. Y'all we don't got to do it no
- 3:07more because the Kardashians just posted it everywhere that
- 3:10they're buying TikTok so that American people can still have
- 3:14TikTok. They just posted a random video.
- 3:18I don't think there was any rhyme or reason behind it.
- 3:21And now this video has started to take off.
- 3:26Obviously this is untrue. I'm going to assume I have not
- 3:30seen anybody be able to verify this.
- 3:32I'm pretty sure this person just like completely made it up and
- 3:35now there's all these videos of people talking about it.
- 3:38I'm also going to choose to assume that the people who are
- 3:40like, quote, UN quote, like covering this as if it's true
- 3:43are like getting in on the troll and they don't actually believe
- 3:46it. But you never know with TikTok
- 3:50users. And I mean, I'm guilty of this
- 3:52too. Like, you know, when you see
- 3:53something on TikTok and you just don't question it and you're
- 3:56like, oh, yeah, that's true. So I fear that also might be
- 3:59what's happening here a little bit.
- 4:01But I'm going to choose to give them the benefit of the doubt
- 4:04and know that they're just like getting in on the troll too.
- 4:06I also would be shocked if the Kardashians had enough capital
- 4:10to actually buy TikTok. Like, I have no idea what TikTok
- 4:13will go for. I don't think that's been
- 4:14disclosed, but I would be surprised.
- 4:18I think the Kardashians have a lot less like liquid cash than
- 4:21we think they do. So while the Kardashians might
- 4:24not be buying TikTok, there is a very small update to the US
- 4:28TikTok ban. Earlier this morning, the US
- 4:30Supreme Court agreed to hear a last ditch legal argument from
- 4:34TikTok on January 10th, which is 9 days before it would be set to
- 4:38be banned. So they're going to hear why a
- 4:40ban of TikTok would be unconstitutional as it would
- 4:44impact free speech of US, US users.
- 4:47I don't know. I'm starting to think it's very
- 4:48possible that this ban might happen.
- 4:51And I know that there's a lot of people who are like, oh, thank
- 4:54God. Like influencers need to go get
- 4:56a real job now. Like I'm so excited to see them
- 4:58all like lose their like cushy jobs and stuff.
- 5:01It's not just about the like 1% of influencers that we see who
- 5:05make tons of money on TikTok. There are literally millions of
- 5:09people across the US that have been able to pay for like
- 5:12college tuition, that have been able to buy their families
- 5:16Christmas presents or like pay for medical bills.
- 5:20Small businesses have absolutely thrived thanks to TikTok.
- 5:24Like there is a much larger impact to just like the US
- 5:28general population. If this app gets banned, then
- 5:31just like, oh, the 1% of influencers now need to figure
- 5:34out their like, source of income.
- 5:35And when people think like, oh, now TikTok influencers are going
- 5:38to have to go get jobs. Like they're not thinking about
- 5:40men. They're thinking about the girls
- 5:42that are like lifestyle influencers.
- 5:44They feel like there's like a net negative to influence our
- 5:47culture and I don't necessarily agree.
- 5:50However, I think that the word influencer and the idea of the
- 5:53influencer industry is quite gendered.
- 5:55I think a lot of people associate it without even
- 5:58realizing with women, and I feel like if it was associated with
- 6:02men, this conversation might be taken a bit more seriously.
- 6:06OK, Speaking of TikTok influencers, the next story that
- 6:09I have is that Lily B Chapman is trying to take accountability
- 6:13for her fumble jewelry line earlier this year.
- 6:17So this is kind of closing the loop on a story from October.
- 6:20So Lily B Chapman is a tick tock creator who gained a big
- 6:23following for travel and fashion content.
- 6:26She gained more attention this past year because she got
- 6:28engaged and had a baby and around the same time she also
- 6:31started calling out snark groups that have doxed her and caused
- 6:36her a lot of harm. So she got some press write UPS
- 6:38because she was like being very vocal about the harm that snark
- 6:41reddits and things like that cause creators.
- 6:44And it is interesting because like obviously a lot of creators
- 6:46have snark reddits about them or snark forums or whatever, but
- 6:50Lily is one of those like niche creators who deals with it a lot
- 6:54more than the average creator of her size.
- 6:57And I don't really know why certain creators trigger or like
- 7:03generate more snark than others, but I'm going to say it has
- 7:08something to do with feeling like a creator is self aware or
- 7:13not self aware. And I think a lot of people
- 7:15would say that Lily falls into that not self aware category.
- 7:18And yeah, she just, she's just generally for a creator of her
- 7:21size has so much more snark around her than others.
- 7:26OK, so in October, Lily released merch based on her favorite
- 7:29jewelry pieces that she wears all the time.
- 7:32We talked about this on Mini Scroll back in October.
- 7:34This turned into a big scandal because she seemed to be
- 7:37stealing from existing brands and products like stealing
- 7:40design. As one user wrote quote, these
- 7:42aren't ideas, they're just already made things you like.
- 7:45Others speculated that she had purchased these items wholesale
- 7:48from like Alibaba, Aliexpress and was trying to say these were
- 7:52like original designs based off of jewelry that she loved.
- 7:55All of this really exploded when a Tick Tock user verified blue
- 7:58check mark stitched one of her videos sharing the existing
- 8:02designs and Lily's alleged merch.
- 8:04I guess there's a big difference between someone's idea and
- 8:07someone's design, because if you put these out with your name on
- 8:10it, not only have they already been done as a dupe of a dupe of
- 8:12a dupe, but it's going to be very hard to argue what makes
- 8:15yours any different than the $2.00 ones from Aliexpress
- 8:18besides having your name. On them, he even made a TikTok
- 8:21noting that one of the earrings that Lily claimed were no longer
- 8:24being sold anymore were seemingly still available from a
- 8:26brand named Petite Moments. So Lily had these earrings and
- 8:30she was like, the brand no longer sells them.
- 8:32So I have made like my own version of them to sell to you
- 8:35guys and people were like, you can still get those earrings.
- 8:38Lily went on to make a TikTok referencing Mark's content,
- 8:41denying any claims that she was purchasing her products from
- 8:44Alibaba or planned on drop shipping.
- 8:46She also explained the process of product development, saying
- 8:49that she was working with a company who works with
- 8:51producers. Essentially, she sends the
- 8:53company ideas and mood boards and they send back samples
- 8:57essentially. She denied the claims, games,
- 9:00you know, when she was quite defensive and then this all just
- 9:03fizzled out as Internet drama does, and we all moved on.
- 9:07Now, two months later, Lily has addressed the situation.
- 9:10In a new video, she said that it was her manufacturer's fault.
- 9:13They sent her samples with molds that had been used for other
- 9:16brands, and Lily was unaware of this when she posted them on
- 9:19TikTok. Took my hand too off the wheel
- 9:21and that lets me presenting samples to you guys that were
- 9:24made with molds that the manufacturer had previously
- 9:26used. And that's why you were able to
- 9:28find the samples that I showed you on other websites.
- 9:31Well, I didn't know that these samples weren't unique to this
- 9:33merch drop. It was my job to do that due
- 9:35diligence and check and I failed to do that.
- 9:37People expected and deserved a higher level of originality than
- 9:40I presented with those samples. And then when I got called out,
- 9:43I responded with dismissiveness and humor because at the time, I
- 9:47still thought I was right. So thank you to everyone who
- 9:49pushed me to look further into it to find out that in fact, I
- 9:52wasn't. Now, Lily didn't address the
- 9:54earrings situation where she claimed that the earrings she
- 9:56was going to sell were no longer available.
- 9:59But this is what she says about the situation.
- 10:03She says she's not going to work with the manufacturers again and
- 10:05she is launching another brand now where she's going to work
- 10:08with smaller teams, more like individual artists and things
- 10:11like that. OK.
- 10:12And the last story that I have for you guys is that Ariana
- 10:15Grande has addressed if she will be touring anytime soon.
- 10:20Speaking with Variety, Ari said she doesn't think she will be
- 10:24touring anytime soon. Quote, I don't see it coming
- 10:27anytime soon. I think the next few years,
- 10:30hopefully we'll be exploring different forms of art and I
- 10:32think acting is feeling like home right now.
- 10:35I am appreciative for my fans understanding.
- 10:38I'm so grateful for the ways in which we've grown together on
- 10:41this whole journey with Wicked. But music will always be a part
- 10:44of my life. So her fans are upset,
- 10:47understandably, because obviously they want to see Ari
- 10:50perform, but also because I guess she did say that she was
- 10:53gonna do like a mini tour of Eternal Sunshine and she said
- 10:56that was in the works. And obviously now she's kind of
- 10:59saying she's not going to tour that album.
- 11:01I think it's very clear that she has outgrown or is outgrowing
- 11:05her kind of pop girl era, her pop girl persona, at least for
- 11:09now. I saw somebody say that they
- 11:11feel like she might be going down the Lady Gaga route, which
- 11:13I actually could totally see. I think acting is far less
- 11:18demanding in terms of like the physical element of touring, I
- 11:22think is so exhausting. Not that acting is not a
- 11:25demanding and a physically exhausting, demanding career
- 11:29because it absolutely is. But like, compared to doing like
- 11:31a world tour, it is probably much more grounding than the pop
- 11:36girl vibe. I also think we sometimes forget
- 11:39how much Ariana Grande has gone through in the last 10 years.
- 11:42And not just that, but she also was a child star.
- 11:45Like there's a lot of trauma that has happened to that girl,
- 11:49that woman. And I think it makes total sense
- 11:53that she just wants kind of like a quieter, more subdued, more
- 11:56like quote UN quote, like normal feeling life right now as she
- 11:59gets into her 30s. I think she feels like doing
- 12:02wicked and kind of acting is right now helping her find who
- 12:07she is because I do think she seemed a bit lost over the
- 12:11course of her music career, You know, kind of just like almost
- 12:14like a chameleon, like blending into like whoever she was
- 12:17hanging out with. And she has a lot of, I think
- 12:20healing to do. And I think she's in that era
- 12:23right now where she is like discovering who she is.
- 12:27So this is sad for the fans, but I'm happy for Ari.
- 12:30If she feels like, you know, the pop girl vibe is just too much.
- 12:33I would think it's too much. I would feel that way.
- 12:37Any of these guys. That's it for Mini Scroll today.
- 12:40That's it for Mini Scroll for our first year of Mini Scroll
- 12:43daily podcast. Thank you guys so much for
