- 0:00I'm gonna go ahead and apologize in advance for the sound quality of this particular
- 0:06podcast. I only realize at the very end of it that I was recording
- 0:10without my microphone, or at least my proper one anyway, So if it
- 0:13sounds a little bad, it's because I'm dumb. Anyway, enjoyed the show.
- 0:28Hello, and welcome to May the Review be with you? With just
- 0:32Joe no Nick today and Nick is off abroad out of the country, I
- 0:38am sure having the time of his life. I keep seeing videos of him
- 0:41wakesurfing, and it's been flop after flop, but I have finally seen some
- 0:46progress and he's looking good. He's looking like he's having a lot of fun.
- 0:48Nick. When you eventually hear this, I applaud you today I am
- 0:53covering by myself Spider Man Across the Universe. This is absolutely the kind of
- 0:59movie that Nick and I would one hundred percent review together, but with him
- 1:03being out of the country, we would probably skip this as more movies that
- 1:07we're going to cover together are coming out, and it would be a shame
- 1:11to not have this on the podcast. Since we are both huge Spider Man
- 1:15fans, have been forever we were indoctor NATed thanks to the nineties cartoon back
- 1:19of the day, as I'm sure many of you were as well. But
- 1:23like I said, today, it's all about Across the Spider Verse. Directed
- 1:27by Joaquin Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin Kate Thompson. We have
- 1:32a different trifecta of directors coming into this movie, which is pretty cool.
- 1:38However, I believe Justin Kate Thompson was actually one of the producers on the
- 1:45original film Into the Spider Verse. Now, outside of that, a lot
- 1:49of the same faces. Phil Lord of course is one of the writers of
- 1:52the film, as he was in the first film, but he's got his
- 1:55partner helping him write this movie as well. We have Christopher Miller back in
- 1:59the helm of the writer's seat, as well as David Callum. As far
- 2:02as this episode of May the review goes, probably gonna keep it a little
- 2:07short today since it's just me, I'm just gonna try and get some my
- 2:10initial thoughts out there. I just saw the movie on Saturday. I couldn't
- 2:15see it on opening night like I wanted to, and the same thing happened
- 2:17with Friday, so I got into a Saturday theater. This resonated pretty well.
- 2:23I mean pretty much. Anyone who is who's been a fan of Spider
- 2:27Man over the years, and you've been tracking the character through different sorts of
- 2:30media, you're gonna really really love this movie. There there is so many
- 2:37references to Spider Man media from over the decades. It's it's absolutely wild.
- 2:44Whether you know you were a fan before the nineties cartoon or you became a
- 2:46fan because of that nineties cartoon, You're gonna see a lot in there.
- 2:51And I'm gonna go over a few of those references in a bit, But
- 2:54first's talk about how this movie is doing so far. Since prior to Guardians
- 3:01of the Galaxy, there was some talk on whether or not superhero films were
- 3:07done, and to me, that just doesn't seem like that was ever the
- 3:09case. It felt like that we were just kind of going through a bit
- 3:12of a slump at the time. There was a lot of talk after Ant
- 3:16Manner the Wass quantumnia came out that perhaps that the long heralding champions of the
- 3:23box office superheroes were finally done, that they had been toppled. Well,
- 3:29that does not appear to be the case. We have Guardians of the Galaxy
- 3:31Three, which smashed the box office, and across or yeah, across the
- 3:36Spider Verse has done extremely well. On its opening night, it had a
- 3:43fifty one million dollar opener and this weekend it's made a collective of one hundred
- 3:47and twenty point five million dollars opening weekend. That is the number two strongest
- 3:53box office this year for weekend results. The only one beating that is,
- 4:00of course, the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which that is going to
- 4:01be tough to beat. That movie is just crushing it. Now, as
- 4:04far as the movie is concerned, I've got some thoughts. This was a
- 4:09weird movie to watch. And for the record, this is going to be
- 4:14a spoiler review for anyone who has not seen the movie. I strongly recommend
- 4:20that you turn back thinking about this movie as compared it to the first film.
- 4:28I think that anyone who might suggest that this movie is better than the
- 4:33first film in any way, I think there are certain points to that.
- 4:36Overall, I think the first film is a masterpiece, and we could probably
- 4:42have several episodes dedicated as to why that is the case. As far as
- 4:46this movie goes, it doesn't feel right to compare it to the first film.
- 4:53Yet I say that mostly because and I don't think that this is a
- 4:56spoiler, but this is a part one, you know, part two beyond
- 5:00the Spider Verse, that comes out next year March twenty fourth, twenty twenty
- 5:05four, and or excuse me, I think it's March twenty ninth, twenty
- 5:10twenty four, and you know, very much it's it's certainly not built the
- 5:16way like a traditional trilogy might be, you know, with each film leading
- 5:21into another, but each film being able to stand on its own. Perhaps
- 5:26this is not that case, at least in the idea that the first movie
- 5:30is absolutely cut and dry its own story. This movie very much sets up
- 5:36for a part two, for a third film, as if it's going to
- 5:42pick up immediately after the events of the ending. And we'll get to the
- 5:46ending, but first, you know, let's talk about when it comes to
- 5:48sequels. I think there's always a good question whether or not a sequel is
- 5:55even warranted, you know, watching that first film, I think, at
- 6:00least for a lot of film enthusiasts, there might have been some concern when
- 6:04the first one did so well and there was talk about making a sequel,
- 6:09and of course there was going to be a sequel, right. That movie
- 6:11made so much money, it was beloved by fans, it was absolutely going
- 6:15to produce a second So that being the case, with the first one being
- 6:20self contained, does it warrant a sequel? Well, it pretty much justifies
- 6:26itself in this movie, heralding back to certain events from the first film in
- 6:30really organic ways. There was what I had believed in the first film to
- 6:34be a loose end that was never really addressed, but it was certainly apparent
- 6:40enough that our filmmakers wanted us to see that Spider forty two, the spider
- 6:45that bites Miles, is not from the sixteen to ten dimension where Miles lives.
- 6:51We see that phasing in and out of reality happened to the spider,
- 6:56just as it happens to all the other Spider people are not Miles, right,
- 7:00So it was pretty clear that they were trying to tell us that,
- 7:02and I thought that that was interesting, that it was a spider from a
- 7:05different dimension that gave Miles his powers, and perhaps that would make him special
- 7:11in some sort of way. Well, it's not really ever addressed in the
- 7:13first film, right, However, that's actually a major plot point of the
- 7:18second film, and we are given our antagonist, The Spot, who,
- 7:26again, if you were a nineties Spider Man fan, this was very rewarding
- 7:30to see the Spot come into life in the big screen, which was really
- 7:36pretty cool. He's played by Jason Schwartzman, who personally I've known him as
- 7:42Gideon in everything I see him in from now on. For his portrayal as
- 7:46Gideon in Scott Pilgrim Versus the World, he's great. He's both extremely goofy
- 7:54and extremely menacing. I mean, everyone in this movie really sells the character
- 7:59that they are portraying, and Shortsman's certainly no exception to that. But in
- 8:05talking about the Spot, the Spot is very much our I guess you could
- 8:09call him our catalyst, you know, for the events that move forward,
- 8:13and he too is tied to the events of the first movie, which I
- 8:18don't think that this was planted the same way that Spider forty two was,
- 8:22but they made it work him being one of the scientists that Miles throws a
- 8:26bagel at when they're escaping alcam X, which I am so glad that that's
- 8:31how they decided to integrate that villain, and he very much tells Miles that
- 8:37you know, he's the one who brought Spider forty two into their universe,
- 8:41so he created Miles. And in similar fashion with Miles spurning the spot with
- 8:50a bagel and then later destroying the collider that helps create the spot, he
- 8:54says that Miles created him, so they're very much entwined, and he wants
- 9:00revenge on Spider Man. We're going to get back to the role of this
- 9:03villain a little bit later for things I want to talk about after we go
- 9:09over the initial story so well. As I mentioned before, this movie's kind
- 9:13of hard to rate, so I'm gonna actually not rate the story yet.
- 9:20We're gonna have to wait next year. Just as you will have to wait
- 9:24for the continuity of the end of the trilogy, you will have to wait
- 9:28for my final score of this movie. But let's go ahead and talk about
- 9:31the story. So Act one, we have our one more time with Gwen's
- 9:37Stacy, of course, played by Hailey Seinfield, who again is awesome in
- 9:39this film. If you were ever a Spider Gwen fan and you bought her
- 9:46comics, then you would have recognized the art style of her world very much
- 9:52is complete tribute to that of Jason Latour, one of the artists for the
- 10:00one and two comic books of Spider Gwen. I've got those. They're awesome.
- 10:05The whole like first ten minutes of the movie is almost like spot on
- 10:09what issue number one is, even with the introduction of the Vulture. Of
- 10:13course, it's a different vulture. It's some sort of renaissance vulture. Which
- 10:18this is where we get the multiverse coming into play here, right, there's
- 10:22a problem with the multiverse. We learned that it's because of the events of
- 10:24the collider exploding in the first film. And Miguel O'Hara very much plays the
- 10:30same kind of same kind of role as Spider UK from the original Spider Verse
- 10:35comics. You know, he is gathering up the Spider Society, he's bringing
- 10:41them to his world of the twenty ninety nine universe, and he's gathered many
- 10:46Spider people to help him take out these anomalies who are bleeding into other universes.
- 10:52So he's very much playing a cleanup crew sort of character. Right,
- 10:58they take in Gwen for her father, Captain Stacy finds out or right after
- 11:03Captain Stacy finds out that she is Spider Web and she or I guess they
- 11:07refer to her a Spider woman. Excuse me, spider woman, right,
- 11:11she ends up joining the Spider Society. We move forward, we get to
- 11:15see how Miles is doing. He's very much doing some Peter Parker stuff,
- 11:18trying to balance his two lives a Spider Man and being a student. It's
- 11:22not working out. Great fight scene with the Spot here where it's just one
- 11:26of the most awkward fights ever. It's it's right out of the comic books
- 11:33of the Spot tripping over himself Miles. You know, we get to see
- 11:37him really like hone his powers here. This guy is actually a great time
- 11:41to talk about some of the animation in this movie. So the animation into
- 11:46the Spider Verse is, you know, absolutely fantastic. There have been a
- 11:50number of films since into the Spider Verse, number of animated films that have
- 11:56come out that have absolutely been borrowing from that movie. You know. The
- 12:01most recent that comes to mind, of course, is Puts Some Boots.
- 12:05The last wish. I believe the other guys, what was it the other
- 12:09guys. I don't think that's what it's called the bad guys. I think
- 12:16maybe that's what it was. I think it's the bad Guys, right,
- 12:18not the other guys. Yeah, it's the bad guys. The Bad Guys
- 12:20very much has that same art style. There's there's a number of films that
- 12:24are very much doing that that two D three D animation that Into the Spider
- 12:28Verse did, and it doesn't again in this film. Of course, however,
- 12:33there's so many different animated characters from other universes who all represent different kinds
- 12:41of animation, which is really cool to see that that's how we are defining
- 12:48differences, and it's consistent throughout. There's even a couple of and I'll get
- 12:52into this one to talk about cameos, but we see actual people throughout the
- 12:58movie who are not animated, and you know, they are not given an
- 13:03animation to blend in with everybody else. They very much, you know,
- 13:07live as they are as we have come to see them in previous live action
- 13:11films. Right. One big difference though, that I would say between the
- 13:16animation from the first film and this current film is the fluidity. Now,
- 13:22there are some really creative images and fight sequences in the first film, but
- 13:28I would say, if I am going to compare these two films, now
- 13:31here's a great place to do it because this film honestly makes some of the
- 13:39fight scenes in the first film look boring. And that is nothing against the
- 13:43first film. As I've already mentioned, I love the first film. It's
- 13:46fantastic, there's nothing boring about it. But in comparing the sequences, like
- 13:52it's so apparent to me that those who were animating the second learn so much
- 14:00from the first and built on that and created all of these dynamic action sequences
- 14:05where these you know, these people, these spider characters who are capable of
- 14:11perceiving the world in different perspectives than your normal average show and hit heck,
- 14:16even your normal superhero you know, with with their acrobatics, their ability to
- 14:20hang off of walls be upside down. We get to see all these insane
- 14:26choreograph fight scenes are not choreographed but planned out fight scenes that that just blow
- 14:33me away. And like I said, they're just so much faster and more
- 14:37fluid than in the previous film. It's it's really hard to describe. I
- 14:43really got to talk to someone who knows more about animation to really shed some
- 14:46light on that. I would love to know their thoughts. So the end
- 14:50of the first act is miles of course, leaving his universe to chase Gwen.
- 14:56He learns that Gwen wasn't being entirely forthcoming when she came to visit him
- 15:01after his fight with the Spot, that really she's there because of the Spot,
- 15:05and the Spot has left this universe to make himself more powerful, because
- 15:11he realizes he has the power to tap into the multiverse, and if he
- 15:13can do that, then truly Miles will have to respect him when he takes
- 15:18everything away from Miles. It's really our setup, not just for across the
- 15:22Spider Verse, but also beyond the Spider Verse, because after after the next
- 15:28scene, we really don't see much of the Spot anymore. The next scene
- 15:33brings us to the home of Spider Man India, who is played by Caron
- 15:39Sony, who I believe is the same actor who we've seen in Deadpool.
- 15:46I can't remember his name, the character's name in Deadpool. I think it's
- 15:50Dopeinder Dopender. I believe that's right. But anyway, he's back and he
- 15:56is our Spider Man India. Again. Another really fluid seen here happens.
- 16:02Miles is able to save a police captain during this sequence. The police captain
- 16:07who was the father of the love interest for Spider Man India who That character
- 16:14in particular has one of my favorite existential moments in that original story where he
- 16:18questions he's the only character who questions that each Spider Man character appears to be
- 16:25some sort of echo of Peter Parker of six sixteen, and how everything appears
- 16:32to be revolving around him, and if that is indeed the case, then
- 16:34what is even the point of his own existence, of Spider Man India's existence
- 16:40and all of the other Spider people do they live only to echo off of
- 16:44the six to sixteen story. Unfortunately, I don't believe that line of questioning
- 16:48ever actually goes anywhere unless it's mentioned in Spider Again or any of the sequels
- 16:53to Spider Verse. I'm really not sure, but it is one of my
- 17:00favorite lines of meta questioning that happens in that original story. So it was
- 17:03neat to see this character come to life anyway. So things start going bananas
- 17:08here once the Spot gets his hands on the Collider and merges with its power
- 17:15and gains some kind of multiversal omnipotence, right, some kind of mastery over
- 17:22the multiverse, and we get a premonition that He's gonna kill Miles's dad.
- 17:30He's gonna kill Jefferson Davis, who is played by Brian Tyree Henry, who
- 17:36I adore as an actor, and once again kills it as Jefferson Davis in
- 17:41this movie. There is a break here, as you know, we continue
- 17:45through Act two. We get to go to the Spiders Society in Spider Man
- 17:52twenty ninety nine universe, Miguel Harro's universe, and we get so many amazing
- 17:56cameos in this sequence. And I'm gonna get back to the story here in
- 18:00a second. I just need to talk about some of the cameos. One
- 18:03that I skipped earlier when the spot is discovering his power is missus Chen from
- 18:07Venom, which was probably there's there's no one who would have expected missus Chen
- 18:14to make a cameo appearances. But if you said you did, I don't
- 18:17believe you. Show me a date in which you know you wrote that somewhere
- 18:22online. I challenge you to do that. I would love to be proven
- 18:25wrong here. The cameo that probably everyone is talking about is Aaron Davis.
- 18:30However, the Aaron Davis that I'm referring to is Donald Glover's Aaron Davis from
- 18:37Spider Man Homecoming, and he's actually in the Prowler outfit. And everyone in
- 18:44my theater just erupted when this happened, myself included. To me, it's
- 18:48not immediately clear that this is the same Donald Glover. This is the same
- 18:56Aaron Davis from Homecoming, right, I mean it's probably it probably is,
- 19:00but there's no confirmation on that yet, right. If anything, maybe it
- 19:06is, and this serves as a purpose, or it serves as an explanation
- 19:11as to why we have not seen this character since the Homecoming movie, because
- 19:14he's been stuck here as a prisoner in the Spiders society. My personal favorite
- 19:22cameo in this movie is absolutely Josh Keyt, the voice of Peter Parker from
- 19:29the Spectacular Spider Man cartoon back in the day on Kids WB This was so
- 19:33unexpected to me. Josh Keen has played Peter Parker in a number of different
- 19:40media, however, I believe this is the one he's most well known for.
- 19:42This was a beloved series. If you've never seen it and you're a
- 19:45Spider Man fan, you should absolutely go watch The Spectacular Spider Man. Another
- 19:48one that people were probably extremely excited about was Yuri Lobenthraal Love Andhal I believe
- 19:55his name is, who, of course, plays Peter Parker spider Man in
- 19:59Sony's Spider Man video game that's been getting so much popularity over the years.
- 20:04The trailer for Spider Man two came out not long ago as I'm recording this,
- 20:10and people are seem divided on the venomsuit, but they seem like they're
- 20:12still excited. There's a lot of talk about this game, so I'm sure
- 20:15people were thrilled to see him in this movie since I believe in no way
- 20:22home there was actually a reference to the video games if I recall correctly,
- 20:25Like one of the finishing moves that Tom Hollands Spider Man puts on Green Goblin
- 20:30is like a finishing move from the first game. I recall people on Twitter
- 20:34like going nuts over that I played the first game, but I in no
- 20:38way shaperform recognized that move. I guess I'm not as much of a fan
- 20:44of that game as everybody else is, but still super fun. All the
- 20:48canon knows. I'm sure I'm missing a few here. JK. Simmons reprising
- 20:53his role as j Jonah Jamison, but he plays. This is interesting.
- 20:56He plays j Jonah Jamison, and like every dimension Jjoben and Jamison is in.
- 21:02Every time JJ appears, JJJ appears, it's j K. Simmons every
- 21:07single time. I believe it's it's him in Lego version, it's him in
- 21:11Miles' universe. I think he might make an appearance or his voice makes an
- 21:15appearance in Earth sixty five Gwen's universe as well. I'm not sure any who.
- 21:18Getting back to the story of this, Oscar Isaac playing Miguel O'Hara,
- 21:23a Spider Man who does not laugh they jokingly refer to, explains to Miles
- 21:29that the issue of what has happened, it's not just that there is a
- 21:36villain with multiversal ending power, but Miles put a universe in danger by saving
- 21:45a police captain, and he brings up that that is a canon event that
- 21:48happens in every universe where there is a Spider Man, that a Spider person
- 21:53must become close with a captain and that captain will die, similar to a
- 21:59Paige triarchal or patriarchal character being close to Spider Man who dies, which of
- 22:06course for Miles that is Uncle Aaron. Whereas most other characters. This is
- 22:11Uncle Ben. Gwen is a bit of an exception here. It's not a
- 22:15patriarchal character, but it is an important male in her life, that of
- 22:18course being Peter Parker who died as a lizard to her. Now, this
- 22:23was an interesting meta commentary. Like I mentioned earlier with Spider Man India mentioning
- 22:30be getting really meta with his commentary, they started to do the same thing
- 22:34here, and the canon event certainly sounds like the same thing that was talked
- 22:41about in the what If series with Doctor Strange about how his his Oh my
- 22:47goodness, I'm gonna forget her name right now. It's Christine, right,
- 22:48it's Christine Palmer. No, I just remember it. Yep. RICHL mcdonnon's
- 22:52Christine Palmer. Okay, So in trying to save Christine Palmer in that universe,
- 22:56you know, he has to let her go, like he has to
- 23:00let her death go because that was a cannon event. Who has to have
- 23:03Which that's really interesting that the show makes that distinction, right because like our
- 23:08doctor Strange didn't lose Christine Palmer. So apparently there are some universes where that's
- 23:14not a cannon event, which that's fine. But this movie suggests that if
- 23:19you are a character, you know, a defined character, there is a
- 23:26canon that you must follow. Right. I guess it's different if you're a
- 23:32Spider person rather than a doctor Strange. I don't know, but that is
- 23:37what this movie says. And we come to find out that Miles is no
- 23:41different. His father is about to be made captain and that the Spot is
- 23:48going to kill him and Miles just has to accept that. Of course,
- 23:51Miles doesn't accept that, and we get this amazing chase scene with all the
- 23:56Spider People and Miles as he lures them out of the building. Also,
- 24:00we get one more imposter Spider Man pointing scene, which, like that joke
- 24:07has now been used three times. I don't think they can do it again.
- 24:11I don't think that that. I think they've hit the peak of that
- 24:14joke. We have seen the top of the mountain with it. If they
- 24:17do it again in the third movie, I don't understand how the world or
- 24:21the multiverse they would possibly top themselves. But hey, I've been wrong before.
- 24:26So with Miles escaping all the Spider People, we interact three, and
- 24:33Act three is really interesting. This act is where you know we're gonna close
- 24:40our movie. There's no big climax this with this film, really, I
- 24:44guess the big climax is after the chase scene. But Act three serves two
- 24:52set up Part two to set up Beyond the Spider Verse, and this puts
- 24:59Miles in in dimension forty two, where his Spider is originally from. That
- 25:03is a twist in this movie I legitimately did not see coming, and I
- 25:07loved how it happened. How the computer scans Miles to send him home,
- 25:12but it's not scanning him necessarily, it's scanning the Spider DNA, and that's
- 25:19where it sends him to the Spider's home. That was such a great bit
- 25:26of creative writing. And there is no Spider Man because Spider forty two was
- 25:30not here to create a Spider Man. And New York looks terrible. New
- 25:34York is having it rough because apparently the Avengers don't exist in this universe or
- 25:38any other superheroes. Big twist. Miles is the Prowler and appears to be
- 25:45one of our antagonists for Beyond the Spider Verse. Where this movie ultimately leaves
- 25:51off is Miles is stuck in dimension forty two. His molecules are revolting since
- 25:56he has no safety ban to protect himself. When realizing what has happened,
- 26:03is gathering a team of Spider People. They're gonna go save Miles, and
- 26:08they're gonna help Miles. On this Spider Person team, we see Penny Parker,
- 26:15Peter Porker, and Peter Parker Spider Man Noir make their return, which
- 26:19two of those characters were not really in this movie at all. Penny Parker
- 26:22makes a small cameo appearance in the Spider Society. I guess Noir and Porker
- 26:27turned down Miguel. I have no idea why they're not part of Spider Society.
- 26:33I could see Noir turning Spider Society down Porker maybe he's just choosing me.
- 26:38Although there wasn't a reference in the beginning of the movie about cartoon hammers,
- 26:42so like, I'm not sure, I'm not sure where they're trying to
- 26:47go with that exactly. There are a few other Spider people in there.
- 26:49Spider Man India is in there. I believe Hoby is also in there.
- 26:52Spider Punk I haven't really talked about in this review at all. That was
- 26:56super neat to see Hobart Brown on screen. That was so fun. His
- 27:03animation is constantly changing, like he's such a rebel that he even protests against
- 27:10whatever animated like his molecules actively protest against whatever animated world he's in. I'm
- 27:15not really sure how to describe it, but the animation around him constantly changes
- 27:19wherever he is, but not in a his atoms are, you know,
- 27:25rejecting it sort of way. They're actively just having a good time being punk
- 27:30rock. Okay, So that's that's basically the summary of the movie right now.
- 27:37There was talk that and I can't remember who says this. I don't
- 27:41remember if it's the Lord, I'm not sure who. Somebody suggests that this
- 27:48movie is the Empire strikes Back. It's the Empire strikes Back of the trilogy.
- 27:56And you know what he meant by that is that this is the part
- 28:00of the story where things don't look good for the good guys. The story
- 28:04is going to end with the bad guys coming on top or things looking extremely
- 28:10dire, you know, the most vague way to put that things look extremely
- 28:12dire. Right, I'm not sure that's a fair comparison for this movie,
- 28:18because truthfully speaking, Empire Strikes Back has an ending. You know, like
- 28:27you might be a little confused as to who some characters are if you've never
- 28:32seen a New Hope watching it. But it doesn't really require you to have
- 28:37that much knowledge of a New Hope, at least you know, thinking of
- 28:41it, thinking about it off the top of head. I don't think it
- 28:44does. And while you may really want to see what's going to happen to
- 28:48the characters after too, there is a climax to this movie, and it
- 28:53has a proper ending, you know, whereas this movie it feels more like
- 29:00a TV episode. You know, I'm not trying to like insult the creativity
- 29:07and the production of this movie, but it really feels like to be continued,
- 29:12you know, like sort of moment the same way that if we're if
- 29:17we're comparing films, the same way that Deathly Hollows finishes. Right, there's
- 29:21no like proper like climax to that movie, because it is half of a
- 29:26story, right, you know, it's literally part one and definitely harb those
- 29:30parts two. Part two comes out the following year, right to serve the
- 29:34rest of the story properly without I guess, you know, a bloated four
- 29:38or five hour movie which you know, for Harry Potter, like, I'm
- 29:41sure they could have gone away with that, but you know, money,
- 29:45why spoil everyone's good time? So I'm not sure I agree with the comparison.
- 29:52Do I have a problem with them doing it like this like a part
- 29:53one part two? I don't. I don't think, so don't think I
- 30:00do. But again, I need to see beyond the Spider Verse before I
- 30:03can make that call. You know, some people have been saying, well,
- 30:06it's really not any different than Infinity War and Endgame, but I would
- 30:11argue it's very different. You know again, Infinity War very much like if
- 30:15you never saw Endgame, you saw the end of a story, right,
- 30:19you saw the end of a story. There's a climax that happens, there
- 30:22are consequences as a result of that climax, and that's it. And if
- 30:26you never saw an endgame, that's a bit of a weird decision to have
- 30:32made, but you would have seen a complete story. You would have there
- 30:36is another part to that story that ultimately could stand on its own too and
- 30:41be a little psychotic without having any information of characters are and how they ended
- 30:44up in the situation. But it works as its own film. You know,
- 30:48I don't think across the Spider Verse does That's just my personal opinion at
- 30:53least for the function of a story, I don't think it does. It
- 30:59very much requires a part two, which, like I said, we'll get
- 31:02that March twenty ninth next year. I wanted to talk about the antagonists too,
- 31:06because I think that there's some weird directions for the antagonists this movie.
- 31:11We have really three principal villains, right here's the spot. Of course,
- 31:18Miguel O'Hara is sort of a villain at least an antagonist, you know,
- 31:23working against Miles. And then we have Miles who's working against Miles. And
- 31:30then that's set up at the very end. So in the third film,
- 31:33you know, we have four different factions, right, we have our Miles
- 31:37and Gwen faction and everybody else who I just mentioned. And I'm curious,
- 31:44you know, who ultimately is the villain here, you know, like because
- 31:47it feels like it would be the Spot. But I'm really not too sure
- 31:52about that. I'm not sure that, like, there's just so much to
- 31:56focus on in the next film. I'm not sure what the focus could poscitby
- 31:59be because it doesn't feel like the Miles character, the Miles bad guy Prowler
- 32:02Miles will call him. It doesn't feel like he's going anywhere very quickly,
- 32:07Like he feels like that's going to be a major staple for that movie,
- 32:10and somehow his role in that movie is going to be some kind of microcosm
- 32:16for defying canon events, for moving past whatever the written story is supposed to
- 32:22be. Right, Like, whatever Spider Man Miles accomplishes against Prowler Miles,
- 32:28it will be a smaller version of what he will accomplish later in defying the
- 32:34canon event, right and saving his dad, which we've already seen as possible,
- 32:37since when's dad is going to live? Right, He's not going to
- 32:42die? Another police captain in the universe will not die, which very interesting
- 32:47to see, like if there will be an explanation about that, because like
- 32:52if the answer is, well, just quit being a police captain, does
- 32:55it just mean like the next person who's police captain like is going to die?
- 33:00It's like the defense against the Dark Arts position, like it's just cursed
- 33:04or just simply quitting the position to accept the Spider person. Is that another
- 33:09way out? Is that another take on the cannon event? I don't know,
- 33:15it'll be really interesting to see if it does. For sure, I
- 33:20don't want to bring up one more thing as far as cannon events go,
- 33:23So Spider Man, you know, this is me buying into the cannon event
- 33:30thing, right, that Spider Man must experience stragedy in order to be Spider
- 33:34Man. I think that that is going to be a hard thing to avoid.
- 33:39You know that Spider Man can always win, because for as long as
- 33:45we've known Spider Man, we know that's not true. And that's one of
- 33:47the reasons why Spider Man has been so beloved is because you know, his
- 33:52sense of loss and grief is so relatable. You know, so many of
- 33:55us try to do the best that we can and we don't always win,
- 34:00or we don't always win in the way that we need or want to.
- 34:05And that's why that story, by that character, no matter the iteration,
- 34:08no matter the echo, it's why it's been so popular over the years.
- 34:13You know, it's really a story of struggle, right, struggle and success.
- 34:17So if you know the story here is that we can have a character
- 34:23that's been defined by those hurdles avoid them. Well, how do we make
- 34:30that meaningful? How do we grant consequence to that. If there is no
- 34:36consequence, I suppose I have a theory and I gotta be wrong. I
- 34:45have a theory. I'm definitely wrong, but I'm gonna put this out here
- 34:49anyway. I have a theory that Spider Gwen is dead in the next film,
- 34:55or at least her her death the way that we have come to know
- 35:01Gwen dying in another Spider Man media will be teased. Right. This will
- 35:07be a possible future for Gwen or a possible plot point in this movie.
- 35:12It's one of the only plot points like I can really see coming or I
- 35:15think I see coming, because they there were two different setups for it,
- 35:19and across the Spider Verse there's one with Oscar Isaac, you know, Miguel
- 35:23O'Hara protesting why he doesn't want Gwen to be part of Spiders Society, when
- 35:30Jessica Drew played by Issa Ray by the way, and she's awesome, just
- 35:37so awesome, protests saying, I don't want her on the team. You
- 35:43know why I don't want her on the team? Right, very ominous,
- 35:45ooh ominous. And then later one appears to have some knowledge about other Gwendolen's
- 35:52the Gwendolen's sacs throughout the multiverse, how they always get close to Spider Man
- 35:57and it doesn't always work out very well for the Gwenn. She mentions that,
- 36:01so she's at least aware that Gwen's got it bad throughout the multiverse,
- 36:07right, And to me, that doesn't feel like a throwaway line, especially
- 36:13when we've had so many presumed throwaway moments actually come back in big ways.
- 36:17I'm looking at Spider forty two, I'd saying nothing's off the table, So
- 36:22maybe when doesn't die, but I think the canon point right, something canonical
- 36:30at least is threatening to Gwen, and Miguel seems to know that. So
- 36:36yeah, I'm curious to see if that's going to play out in any way,
- 36:39especially since it almost does feel like Gwen's story is wrapped up. Not
- 36:45that she's done as a character, of course, but like the arc that
- 36:49she had in Across the Spider Rist, which is set up in the first
- 36:52fifteen minutes, it's ultimately answered and finished by the end of the film before
- 36:58she goes on a rescue mission. So you know, I'm wondering if they'll
- 37:01take that a step further with what they've planted so far. We'll see.
- 37:07But yeah, I think I've talked my ass off enough here regarding Spider Man
- 37:12across the Spider Verse. Again, I'm not gonna give this movie a score
- 37:17just yet. We're going to revisit that next year. But I will say
- 37:23that I really enjoyed this film. I think it's in a great place so
- 37:28far. I'm really interested to see what Part three is going to be.
- 37:32You know, this movie appears to be a really great setup so far.
- 37:36There's there's a lot of really interesting cathartic moments that are set up to happen
- 37:39next year, so I'm really looking forward to it. So I guess until
- 37:44then, we're gonna put a pin in it. You know. Next up
- 37:47we're probably gonna cover the Flash Movie, which I know Nick is so excited
- 37:52to watch. He can't wait. He can't stop talking about how bad he
- 37:54thinks it's gonna be. But apparently it's the greatest superhero film of all time.
- 37:59Will see if that is true next time. On made the review be
- 38:04with you, hopefully with Nick and Joe. We'll catch you all next time.
- 38:07Thanks a lot, Peace,
