- 0:14Speaker 1: Welcome to Fair Territory Division Series Edition. I'm Ken Rosenthal
- 0:17Speaker 1: here with Alana Rizzo on this Friday.
- 0:20Speaker 2: It's a Friday, that's right.
- 0:22Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about the conclusion to the Dodgers Phillies series,
- 0:25Speaker 1: which of course was one of the more dramatic things
- 0:27Speaker 1: you will ever see. We're gonna talk about the two
- 0:29Speaker 1: game fives ahead, and we're gonna talk about all kinds
- 0:32Speaker 1: of other things regarding the Division Series and baseball as well.
- 0:35Speaker 1: But the big story of the day, the big story
- 0:38Speaker 1: really of the Division Series so far, is the conclusion
- 0:41Speaker 1: of the Dodgers Phillies Game four last night. You all
- 0:45Speaker 1: saw it by now, Orian Kirkering. The play at the plate,
- 0:49Speaker 1: it didn't happen two outs, he could have gone the first.
- 0:53Speaker 1: JT Realmuta was pointing at him to go to first,
- 0:56Speaker 1: and it was just one of the more shocking conclusions.
- 0:59Speaker 2: And also.
- 1:01Speaker 1: One of the more difficult things to watch that you'll
- 1:03Speaker 1: ever see. And kirk Ring is a guy who's come
- 1:05Speaker 1: onto the scene. He's been really good. He panicked obviously
- 1:09Speaker 1: in that moment. I believe all of us have had
- 1:11Speaker 1: moments in our jobs when we've panicked, and I would
- 1:16Speaker 1: expect most people would have sympathy, even the harshest of.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Fans, for what he is going through right now.
- 1:22Speaker 1: You could see after the game, Alana, obviously he bent
- 1:26Speaker 1: over on the mound. He was sitting in the dugout
- 1:28Speaker 1: just staring at the field. Mat Gelbe the Athletic wrote
- 1:30Speaker 1: a terrific story today about how the Phillies gathered around
- 1:34Speaker 1: him in support because.
- 1:35Speaker 2: The players understand.
- 1:37Speaker 1: The players understand that things happen on the field and
- 1:40Speaker 1: sometimes you can't account for them. And let's keep in
- 1:44Speaker 1: mind too, it's like an umpire's call. No one thing
- 1:48Speaker 1: decides a game.
- 1:49Speaker 2: If the Phillies had scored earlier, if.
- 1:51Speaker 1: They had not been one for seven with runners in
- 1:53Speaker 1: scoring position, if they had not squandered opportunities, of course
- 1:56Speaker 1: this game could have been.
- 1:58Speaker 2: A lot different.
- 1:58Speaker 1: So everyone has sympathy for Ryan Kirkering, and I want
- 2:01Speaker 1: to show you before we bring a lota in this
- 2:03Speaker 1: quote from Howie Rose, the legendary Mets announcer on Twitter,
- 2:07Speaker 1: he said, I don't care who you root for, but
- 2:10Speaker 1: if you can't find even an ounce of compassion for
- 2:13Speaker 1: Oriyan Kirkering, you are undoubtedly devoid of a soul. Alana,
- 2:17Speaker 1: I know, obviously from a Dodger standpoint, this was a
- 2:20Speaker 1: great outcome, but anybody who loves the sport could sympathize
- 2:25Speaker 1: with what happened last night with Ryan Kirkering.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Ken, you'd never want the load of what happened last
- 2:32Speaker 3: night to fall on one player. And let's be quite
- 2:34Speaker 3: honest here, the Philadelphia Phillies are not advancing to the CS,
- 2:37Speaker 3: not because of Oriyan Kirkering. If you take a look
- 2:40Speaker 3: Ken at the lack of offense and critical times, which
- 2:43Speaker 3: I know you're going to dive deeper into, That's why
- 2:45Speaker 3: the Phillies are not going to the CS. Has nothing
- 2:49Speaker 3: to do with the mental gaff from Orian Kirkering. And
- 2:52Speaker 3: we'll talk about that a little bit more and how
- 2:54Speaker 3: I feel about that and what I hope Phillies fans
- 2:57Speaker 3: do in the future about this situation.
- 3:00Speaker 4: But can let's talk.
- 3:00Speaker 3: About the lack of offense when it mattered the most
- 3:03Speaker 3: for the Phills.
- 3:04Speaker 2: No, Alona, That's a great point.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And here is the key tweet from Jeff Curve CBS
- 3:09Speaker 1: last night, sums it all up. Turner, Schwarber and Harper
- 3:13Speaker 1: Turner the batting champion, Schwarber fifty plus home runs, Bryce Harper,
- 3:16Speaker 1: one of the postseason legends of our time. Their combined
- 3:19Speaker 1: stats right there, Game one one for eleven, Game two
- 3:22Speaker 1: one for ten, Game three seven for thirteen. Okay, that
- 3:25Speaker 1: was a good one. Game four one for fourteen. Now,
- 3:29Speaker 1: in fairness to the Phillies, a lot of this had
- 3:32Speaker 1: to do with the brilliant Dodgers pitching, just as the
- 3:34Speaker 1: Dodgers struggles in this series had to do with the
- 3:37Speaker 1: brilliant Phillies pitching. The Dodgers hit one ninety nine in
- 3:40Speaker 1: this series, the Phillies hit two thirteen. So you can
- 3:43Speaker 1: only be so harsh because the pitching was so good.
- 3:46Speaker 1: But the problem for the Phillies, as you step back
- 3:49Speaker 1: now and take a broader look at this, this is
- 3:52Speaker 1: the third straight year they've suffered a traumatic defeat. Actually
- 3:56Speaker 1: the fourth great year they've suffered a traumatic defeat. World
- 3:58Speaker 1: Series in twenty two, NLCS in twenty three, DS to
- 4:02Speaker 1: the Mets.
- 4:02Speaker 2: In twenty four, and now this series to the Dodgers.
- 4:06Speaker 1: J t ru Muto said that this wasn't as painful
- 4:08Speaker 1: as last year because they felt they lost to a
- 4:10Speaker 1: really good team. But now with real, Muto and Schwarber
- 4:13Speaker 1: free agents, with Rob Thompson in a bit of an
- 4:17Speaker 1: uncertain place as the manager. You just wonder what is
- 4:20Speaker 1: going to be with this franchise. That's how traumatic this
- 4:23Speaker 1: whole thing is going to be for them, Milana and Ken.
- 4:26Speaker 3: You saw it last night when Kyle Schwarber was addressing
- 4:29Speaker 3: the media. He was clearly emotional. As you mentioned, he
- 4:31Speaker 3: and Jtrail Muto are entering a free agency period for them.
- 4:35Speaker 3: He'd love, I would imagine, to finish his career talking
- 4:38Speaker 3: about Schwarber as a Philly But you don't know what
- 4:41Speaker 3: it's what's going to happen. I realize it's very premature
- 4:44Speaker 3: to sit here and talk about it on October tenth,
- 4:47Speaker 3: but there is a good possibility that we're not going
- 4:49Speaker 3: to see Schwarber in a Phillies uniform next year. And
- 4:52Speaker 3: I think these guys in that clubhouse in that dugout
- 4:54Speaker 3: realizing that their lockermates may not be the same guys
- 4:57Speaker 3: next year as their word today.
- 4:59Speaker 4: And there's relation ships there.
- 5:01Speaker 1: No question, and they want to resign Schwarburn real Muto,
- 5:04Speaker 1: Ranger Suarez another potential free agent. The expectation there is
- 5:07Speaker 1: they probably will lose him and they have more of
- 5:10Speaker 1: an ability to replace a Suarez with Andrew Painter coming
- 5:13Speaker 1: up and all of that. But sure there are questions
- 5:16Speaker 1: now that we're lingering the whole season and then have
- 5:19Speaker 1: lingered over this team. And there's been a lot of
- 5:22Speaker 1: talking in recent days about the Yankees failures in the postseason. Well,
- 5:25Speaker 1: the Phillies have kind of had a similar run here
- 5:27Speaker 1: at least the last four years.
- 5:29Speaker 2: And what it underscores again.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Is how difficult it is to win the World Series
- 5:35Speaker 1: in an era where you have an expanded postseason, in
- 5:38Speaker 1: an era where money doesn't always buy you everything. Teams
- 5:43Speaker 1: are more competitive now, It's really hard. So we will
- 5:47Speaker 1: see where this all turns with the Phillies. But obviously
- 5:50Speaker 1: that was a very difficult loss for.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Them in so many ways.
- 5:54Speaker 1: So a lot of let's turn, I guess to game fives,
- 5:56Speaker 1: and let's start with the Cubs and the Brewers. Cubs
- 6:00Speaker 1: rallying from two games to none down, they now have
- 6:03Speaker 1: to go back to Milwaukee to win.
- 6:04Speaker 3: With Cook, I tell you what, both home teams have
- 6:09Speaker 3: won their games Ken, So what does that mean is
- 6:11Speaker 3: that Milwaukee's turn in Game five?
- 6:13Speaker 1: You would think, but the pitching of both teams, Alanta
- 6:16Speaker 1: is kind of in shambles, So I don't know where
- 6:19Speaker 1: this is going. And for the Cubs, Imanaga is going
- 6:24Speaker 1: to have to play some kind of role. There's a
- 6:27Speaker 1: starter or following an opener, as he did in the
- 6:29Speaker 1: Padre series. He is the guy lined up to pitch,
- 6:32Speaker 1: usually prefers an extra day's rest. Won't get one here,
- 6:35Speaker 1: and they have others in the bullpen, maybe in Aaron Savali,
- 6:40Speaker 1: maybe a Colin Ray who will have to step up
- 6:42Speaker 1: because they're in a funky place with their pen right now, even.
- 6:45Speaker 2: With the days off here.
- 6:47Speaker 1: And then the Brewers are kind of in a similarly
- 6:50Speaker 1: difficult situation. The Miz is going to play a prominent
- 6:53Speaker 1: role as a bulk guy most likely in this game,
- 6:57Speaker 1: but they're gonna need contributions from others as well. And
- 7:00Speaker 1: for me, this is a coin flip. Whenever you get
- 7:02Speaker 1: to a game five, it's a total coin flip. Home
- 7:04Speaker 1: Field certainly helps the Brewers, and they play really well
- 7:07Speaker 1: at Miller Park, but a lot of who knows what's
- 7:10Speaker 1: going to happen here?
- 7:11Speaker 3: You know, Ken It's crazy too, because if you think
- 7:13Speaker 3: about the other side of things. In the American League
- 7:16Speaker 3: Division Series, it's a game five for the Detroit Tigers
- 7:19Speaker 3: as well as the Seattle Mariners. AJ Hinch and the
- 7:21Speaker 3: Tigers oping that home cooking is not the thing going
- 7:25Speaker 3: on because they're going back, of course, to Seattle for
- 7:28Speaker 3: Game five. What's interesting to me, Ken is that you know,
- 7:30Speaker 3: Tarek Schouble is going to take the mound as he should.
- 7:34Speaker 3: But the Tigers have lost every Trek Schoolble start this
- 7:37Speaker 3: season against the Mariners. How much is that in their head?
- 7:42Speaker 2: I don't know if it's in their head. That is
- 7:43Speaker 2: one of those baseball things. Allot it to me that
- 7:46Speaker 2: is likely to reverse. It's one of these fluky things
- 7:50Speaker 2: that just occur.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Now, Trek Scooble isn't an interesting spot here, and I
- 7:54Speaker 1: wrote about this. Actually, I have an essay coming out
- 7:56Speaker 1: on the pregame show tonight about Trek Schooble and this
- 7:59Speaker 1: whole circumstance. So he is likely to be the back
- 8:02Speaker 1: to back American League Cy Young winner. We can pretty
- 8:05Speaker 1: confidently predict that in American League history, only Randy Johnson,
- 8:10Speaker 1: Pedro Martinez, and Roger Clements have won back to back
- 8:13Speaker 1: Cy Young's. There are a few more who have done
- 8:14Speaker 1: it in the National League. So he's going to be
- 8:16Speaker 1: the fourth, and that.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Is quite an accomplishment.
- 8:19Speaker 1: But last year Game five against Cleveland, what happened. He
- 8:25Speaker 1: goes through four scoreless, then gives up the basis loaded
- 8:28Speaker 1: walk to Jose Ramirez and then the grand slam to
- 8:30Speaker 1: Lane Thomas. That was Game five last year. Here we
- 8:32Speaker 1: go with Game five this year, again on the road,
- 8:35Speaker 1: and all eyes are on him. He's going to be
- 8:37Speaker 1: the back to back cy young guy. And it wouldn't
- 8:40Speaker 1: be fair to say Trek Scougele is some kind of
- 8:44Speaker 1: not clutch performer if he doesn't pitch well tonight, but
- 8:48Speaker 1: this is a big situation.
- 8:49Speaker 2: He has a two point one to three ERA in
- 8:51Speaker 2: the postseason for his career. This is not a guy
- 8:54Speaker 2: who's performed poorly.
- 8:55Speaker 1: And in Game two he gave up to two homers
- 8:57Speaker 1: by Polanco solo shots, but otherwise was really good. So
- 9:01Speaker 1: it's a defining moment for him. It's a big moment
- 9:04Speaker 1: for the Tigers. And we're going to see too if
- 9:07Speaker 1: Seattle can finally get back to the ALCS with George
- 9:11Speaker 1: Kirby on the mound. They've had the magical run from Raleigh,
- 9:14Speaker 1: who has been great even in the postseason. I don't
- 9:18Speaker 1: know where this is going to go tonight. I don't
- 9:20Speaker 1: know that anyone does, but it's going to be really
- 9:22Speaker 1: interesting for sure.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Well, whomever wins will face the Toronto Blue Jays and
- 9:27Speaker 3: can I believe that you are in Toronto now? But
- 9:29Speaker 3: win or lose, Tiger Territory is going to have it
- 9:32Speaker 3: all covered with the Athletics, Tiger Beat reporter Cody staven Hagen,
- 9:35Speaker 3: Kieran Steckley, former Tiger Austin Jackson. So make sure that
- 9:39Speaker 3: you tune into either a Game five win for those
- 9:42Speaker 3: guys or a post mortem of the Detroit Tigers.
- 9:55Speaker 4: It is time for Grill and Ken.
- 9:57Speaker 3: We appreciate the opportunity for those of us that are
- 9:59Speaker 3: watching and listening to us here, whether it's on YouTube
- 10:02Speaker 3: or wherever you get your podcast, to ask Ken Rosenthal
- 10:06Speaker 3: a question.
- 10:07Speaker 4: So we're going to start with Neil.
- 10:09Speaker 3: He has a question in regards to Clayton Kershaw, who
- 10:12Speaker 3: obviously did not have a good outing out of the
- 10:15Speaker 3: pen in Game three for the Los Angeles Dodgers. So
- 10:18Speaker 3: we'll go to this question here, and it is Ken,
- 10:21Speaker 3: has Kershaw pitched his last game? Do you think kersh
- 10:25Speaker 3: future Hall of Famer is on the Dodgers roster for
- 10:28Speaker 3: the CS.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Wow, great question. I don't know the answer to that.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Probably it would depend someone on the health of Tanner Scott,
- 10:35Speaker 1: but actually Tamer Scott is out for the next serious
- 10:37Speaker 1: I should have mentioned.
- 10:38Speaker 2: That I do expect to be on the roster. I
- 10:40Speaker 2: don't know what is the better option here.
- 10:44Speaker 1: They still can have a spot for Kersh. No, he
- 10:47Speaker 1: didn't pitch well in that particular circumstance the other night,
- 10:50Speaker 1: but part of it was in going back out had
- 10:53Speaker 1: to do with Tanner Scott not being available. So it's
- 10:56Speaker 1: a fair question, Alta, But what do you think on
- 10:58Speaker 1: this one?
- 10:59Speaker 3: Well, I can't imagine a world ken And before let
- 11:02Speaker 3: me let me preface this conversation with everybody knows that
- 11:05Speaker 3: I am a Dodger fan, and everybody knows that I
- 11:07Speaker 3: am a Clayton apologist. But for a good reason, I will.
- 11:10Speaker 3: I will defend Clayton Kershaw to my dying breath. I
- 11:13Speaker 3: can't imagine a world in which Clayton Kershaw is not
- 11:16Speaker 3: on the postseason roster. That being said, I also think
- 11:19Speaker 3: people look at it as he came out of the
- 11:21Speaker 3: bullpen and he didn't perform. Well, I look at it
- 11:24Speaker 3: differently at the time that Kirsh came out of the bullpen,
- 11:27Speaker 3: we did not realize that Tanner Scott had that lower
- 11:30Speaker 3: body incision abscess situation. Right, So, okay, maybe Kershaw was
- 11:36Speaker 3: kind of taken one for the team. Did he have
- 11:37Speaker 3: his best stuff? Absolutely not, But they were down Tanner Scott,
- 11:40Speaker 3: so I give that a little bit more weight in
- 11:43Speaker 3: terms of perhaps that is the reason that he went
- 11:45Speaker 3: back out there for a second inning. I think Kirsh
- 11:47Speaker 3: is on the CS roster. Okay, another question here in
- 11:51Speaker 3: terms of the New York Yankees, can see Carrera has
- 11:54Speaker 3: this to say, what has the NYY management done wrong?
- 11:59Speaker 2: Wow? We could talk about this now.
- 12:03Speaker 1: I wrote my column yesterday about this whole situation, and
- 12:07Speaker 1: what I wrote was that based on the outcome of
- 12:11Speaker 1: this season and the series against Toronto, it does not
- 12:14Speaker 1: seem to me that alone is enough to have a
- 12:16Speaker 1: management change in New York, either with Brian Cashman.
- 12:19Speaker 2: The general manager or Aaron Boone the manager.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I know a lot of Yankee fans hated that column
- 12:24Speaker 1: and hated that premise, And certainly you can make the
- 12:26Speaker 1: case that Boone now eight years in, cash twenty seven
- 12:31Speaker 1: years in, they have not won a World series.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Okay, you want.
- 12:34Speaker 1: To make that case, that's fine. But this season, I
- 12:38Speaker 1: don't know that they did all that much wrong. I'll
- 12:41Speaker 1: start with Cashman. So Cashman pivots from Juan Soto after
- 12:44Speaker 1: they lose him to the New York Mets. They get free,
- 12:46Speaker 1: they get Goldman, they get Bellinger, they get Devin Williams.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Devin Williams didn't work out great, but he wasn't horrible either,
- 12:52Speaker 1: and the other three were pretty good. Then the deadline,
- 12:55Speaker 1: he fortifies the bullpen, picks up some bench players. I
- 12:59Speaker 1: don't know that they did a lot wrong. They were
- 13:01Speaker 1: better defensively down the stretch, not great, but better.
- 13:04Speaker 2: More athletic.
- 13:05Speaker 1: They just got beat. And in this day and age,
- 13:08Speaker 1: a lot of people have a hard time accepting it
- 13:10Speaker 1: when their team just gets beat. They got beat by
- 13:13Speaker 1: a better team, and at some point it's on the
- 13:15Speaker 1: players too. Freedom Rodin pitched poorly, the offense really besides
- 13:20Speaker 1: Judge was not good. So I'll excuse Cashman on that.
- 13:24Speaker 1: And I don't even know how you can look at
- 13:26Speaker 1: Boone and say this was his fault because they just
- 13:29Speaker 1: got again out played.
- 13:31Speaker 2: They won ninety four games.
- 13:32Speaker 1: They should have yes won the division, but they lost
- 13:35Speaker 1: the tiebreaker to the Blue Jays. They had that mid
- 13:37Speaker 1: season low that was brutal, but they came out of it.
- 13:40Speaker 1: They beat the Red Sox at some point. You've got
- 13:43Speaker 1: to look at this a little bit reasonably. Now, if
- 13:46Speaker 1: hal Steinbretter, the owner, said, you know what, I do
- 13:50Speaker 1: want to make a change.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I want to do something different. I get that.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Okay, then you got to find someone better than these two.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Now you might find a better manager easier than a
- 13:59Speaker 1: better general manager that Brian Cashman. Believe it or not,
- 14:02Speaker 1: but these jobs are not easy. So obviously I stand
- 14:05Speaker 1: by what I wrote, and I know a lot of
- 14:07Speaker 1: Yankee fans feel differently, and I totally respect that and
- 14:10Speaker 1: get it. But this idea that if season does not
- 14:14Speaker 1: end the World Series title, it's a failure, it's ridiculous.
- 14:17Speaker 1: It's simply ridiculous. As I said before, Alana, it's really
- 14:20Speaker 1: hard to win a World Series, period.
- 14:24Speaker 3: And it just goes to show you, and I've said
- 14:26Speaker 3: this a thousand times. Money buys good players, Ken Rosenthal,
- 14:29Speaker 3: It does not buy wins, and it does not buy championships.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Now the New York Yankees are in can kun with
- 14:35Speaker 3: the New York Mets and the Boston Red Sox and
- 14:38Speaker 3: a number of other teams too. So it just goes
- 14:40Speaker 3: to show you money helps. It's not the end all
- 14:42Speaker 3: be all. Switching to the Phillies, who are now also
- 14:44Speaker 3: on their way to can Kuhn Video Game Nation wants
- 14:47Speaker 3: to know. Do you think Dave Dombrowski is a threat
- 14:49Speaker 3: to be dismissed of President of Baseball Operations of the Phillies.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Absolutely not.
- 14:55Speaker 1: And Bob Nightingale the USA Today wrote a long story
- 14:58Speaker 1: about Dobrowski and in their relationship the owner John Middleton,
- 15:03Speaker 1: and basically John Middleton wants Dombrowski to be the Pobo forever.
- 15:07Speaker 1: The real question is Rob Thompson, and it's not simple
- 15:11Speaker 1: a question of whether the Phillies want him back. It
- 15:13Speaker 1: might also be a question of whether he wants to
- 15:15Speaker 1: be back. A manager goes through these things and it's difficult.
- 15:19Speaker 1: So I would expect when things settle down, he would
- 15:22Speaker 1: want to be back. But if you're the Phillies, maybe
- 15:25Speaker 1: you look at this and the successive playoff failures and
- 15:29Speaker 1: they've come earlier each year, and you say, okay, we
- 15:32Speaker 1: want to do something different. Dave Dombrowski could make that
- 15:34Speaker 1: decision that would not surprise me. But I honestly think
- 15:39Speaker 1: Rob Thompson is a good manager for this team. And
- 15:41Speaker 1: the compassion he showed last night with Kirkerhan coming off
- 15:44Speaker 1: the field and in his news conference, those were the
- 15:48Speaker 1: hallmarks of a leader. So to me, Rob Thompson should
- 15:52Speaker 1: be back if he wants to be back, And the
- 15:54Speaker 1: question is going to be do the Phillies want him back?
- 15:56Speaker 2: That's number one.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Kyle Schwarber can And what do you think his market is?
- 16:01Speaker 3: He's a DH Obviously, fifty home runs this season, fifty
- 16:04Speaker 3: plus home runs this season. He is going to be
- 16:06Speaker 3: thirty three in March, which, as we know in baseball terminology,
- 16:09Speaker 3: might as well be one foot in the grave. But
- 16:12Speaker 3: what do you think is his market? What's his ceiling?
- 16:16Speaker 3: What's his market? Where do you see him?
- 16:18Speaker 1: I see him at four years getting a fourth year,
- 16:21Speaker 1: and I see him at thirty million plus, so four
- 16:24Speaker 1: years one to twenty minimum, and that's probably around where
- 16:29Speaker 1: he'll be, either with the Phillies or someone else. Now,
- 16:31Speaker 1: there are teams that could really use Kyle Schwarber, just
- 16:34Speaker 1: as there are things that could really use Pete Alonzo.
- 16:37Speaker 1: And they're not only the teams that they play for,
- 16:39Speaker 1: so it could get interesting with both. In Alonzo's case,
- 16:43Speaker 1: he won't of a qualifying offer this year. I don't
- 16:45Speaker 1: believe Schwarber is eligible for one either. I can't remember
- 16:48Speaker 1: that exactly. But both those guys, because power is such
- 16:52Speaker 1: a premium right now and it's so difficult to find
- 16:55Speaker 1: hitters like this, they should do well.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Ken, where do you think a better fit would be
- 17:01Speaker 3: in terms of the Boston Red Sox as at a
- 17:04Speaker 3: DH first base, whatever, Pete Alonzo, Kyle Schwarber.
- 17:09Speaker 1: That's a right left question, and they would have to
- 17:12Speaker 1: decide which do they prefer, the right handed hitter or
- 17:14Speaker 1: the left handed hitter. Most of their outfielders are left
- 17:17Speaker 1: handed hitters. I don't know that that figures into it.
- 17:19Speaker 1: It kind of depends on Reregman too. If they lose Gregman,
- 17:23Speaker 1: then you need a right handed hitter and you have story.
- 17:25Speaker 1: But really at that point you would need the right
- 17:27Speaker 1: handed thumper. So Alonso is in many ways a very
- 17:31Speaker 1: good fit for the Red Sox, and that's going to
- 17:34Speaker 1: be a really interesting one because how badly do the
- 17:36Speaker 1: Mets want them, how badly do they want to mix
- 17:38Speaker 1: it up?
- 17:39Speaker 2: After what happened to them this season.
- 17:41Speaker 1: This offseason is going to be wild, as it always is,
- 17:43Speaker 1: and some of these questions Alana are going to be
- 17:45Speaker 1: really interesting to see play out.
- 17:49Speaker 3: When you think about the Red Sox, I know the
- 17:51Speaker 3: Red Sox were eliminated in the wildcard round to the
- 17:53Speaker 3: New York Yankees, But when you think about the Red
- 17:55Speaker 3: Sox ten and they're pending free agents, who do you
- 17:58Speaker 3: think is more likely to opt out? Or in Bregman
- 18:02Speaker 3: story Giolito, When you look at those guys, who do
- 18:05Speaker 3: you think ops in?
- 18:05Speaker 4: Who you think ops out?
- 18:07Speaker 1: Regman is out. I don't even know there's any questions.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Is forty million a year but he's owed what two
- 18:14Speaker 1: years and eighty something like that. He'll beat that as
- 18:17Speaker 1: a free agent. He'll beat the total. He might not
- 18:19Speaker 1: beat the AAV but if he gets I don't know,
- 18:21Speaker 1: six times.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Thirty, he's pretty happy if that's the number.
- 18:25Speaker 1: So he's opting out and the Red Sox will be
- 18:27Speaker 1: in there trying to keep him, because you've seen with
- 18:30Speaker 1: Alex Bregman, not only is it the performance on the field,
- 18:33Speaker 1: he makes everyone around him better. He's almost like another
- 18:37Speaker 1: coach in the dug out so Bregman is mensely vable
- 18:41Speaker 1: to the Red Sox and what they do. Gilido, I
- 18:44Speaker 1: would expect ops in, although starting pitching, maybe he chooses
- 18:47Speaker 1: else to do something else, and Story I would say
- 18:50Speaker 1: ops in too, But I don't know. In stories case,
- 18:54Speaker 1: you may look at the shortstop market and say, you
- 18:56Speaker 1: know what, it's pretty thin Boba Schet. Most teams don't
- 18:59Speaker 1: look at him as a shorts up. Maybe Trevor Story says,
- 19:02Speaker 1: I will opt out and see what I can get
- 19:03Speaker 1: out there.
- 19:04Speaker 2: But at the same time, he's not coming off an
- 19:07Speaker 2: amazing year.
- 19:08Speaker 1: He's coming off of in pre year, so it's going
- 19:11Speaker 1: to be an interesting decision for him.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Boston is good for Story and I
- 19:15Speaker 3: think he likes it there. But I agree with you
- 19:17Speaker 3: on all of those counts in terms of who opts
- 19:19Speaker 3: in and out. It's always going to be fun in
- 19:21Speaker 3: the off season going in to next year. All right,
- 19:23Speaker 3: coming up, we're talking about our dude and dork of
- 19:26Speaker 3: the week.
- 19:26Speaker 4: Stay with us, we'll be right back. Bet MGM players will.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Receive an MLB Parlay Boost token to use the token
- 19:33Speaker 3: at a parlay wager made up of entirely MLB bets
- 19:37Speaker 3: to your bed slip and activate the token score extra
- 19:40Speaker 3: winnings if you're wager that was made with the parlay
- 19:42Speaker 3: boost token wins. Gambling problem more concern, there is help
- 19:46Speaker 3: Call one eight hundred gambler.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Dude, Dude, dude.
- 19:56Speaker 3: All right, Ken, who is your dude of the week
- 19:58Speaker 3: for this week?
- 20:00Speaker 2: Actually, Alana, I'm going to let you go first.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Oh, I get to go first. Okay, So my dude
- 20:05Speaker 3: of the week is Oriyan Kirkering. And I realized that
- 20:09Speaker 3: the play at the plate and throwing to the wrong
- 20:10Speaker 3: base was obviously a mental lapse. But for this young man,
- 20:14Speaker 3: who is only twenty four years old to go out
- 20:17Speaker 3: there and face the media and answer questions, you know,
- 20:20Speaker 3: if I can get on Justishom Junior for not talking
- 20:22Speaker 3: to the media and turning his back. I want to
- 20:24Speaker 3: give props to this kid who very easily could have
- 20:27Speaker 3: been so embarrassed and so heartbroken that he didn't address that.
- 20:30Speaker 3: You can see him there holding back tears. It was
- 20:33Speaker 3: a very emotional moment. But I appreciate the fact that
- 20:38Speaker 3: he was candid and honest and raw and answered the questions.
- 20:43Speaker 3: And I hope to God and Pedro Martinez said this
- 20:46Speaker 3: the best on TBS last night that do not allow
- 20:50Speaker 3: this talent to carry this load for the rest of
- 20:54Speaker 3: his career.
- 20:55Speaker 4: And I agree.
- 20:55Speaker 3: Everyone's been there in this game, Ken, everyone's made a mistake.
- 20:59Speaker 3: We've done it our careers where we've all made mistakes
- 21:02Speaker 3: we wish we could take back. So Ryan Kirkering, this
- 21:06Speaker 3: does not define you. This is not who you are.
- 21:08Speaker 3: You are my dude of the week.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Great call, and I was waiting for you around him
- 21:12Speaker 1: because I wasn't sure where you were going to go exactly.
- 21:14Speaker 2: But I've got two. Roki Sasaki obviously has to be
- 21:18Speaker 2: the week. We didn't give him enough love in the
- 21:20Speaker 2: first segment.
- 21:21Speaker 1: That three inning performance last night was just brilliant, and
- 21:24Speaker 1: he's been brilliant the whole postseason and for coming back
- 21:28Speaker 1: from what he came back from, the injury and the
- 21:30Speaker 1: mental questions about him, all of the things, the transition
- 21:33Speaker 1: from Japan to the US as a twenty three year old.
- 21:37Speaker 2: That is impressive.
- 21:38Speaker 1: My other dude of the week, we haven't talked enough
- 21:39Speaker 1: about this guy either. Flat Junior I good. Yeah, he
- 21:45Speaker 1: had against the Yankees and it was kind of out
- 21:49Speaker 1: of nowhere because he didn't have a great September and
- 21:51Speaker 1: there were concerns the chets not behind him and all that,
- 21:54Speaker 1: but he was brilliant.
- 21:56Speaker 2: And the other night on Fox after the game the
- 22:01Speaker 2: Yankees lose, that was it was just hilarious.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Well that was so glad, glad, you and your Roki
- 22:06Speaker 1: sak both dudes of the week. Now, I want to
- 22:09Speaker 1: get into something right here, because Dave Roberts didn't he
- 22:11Speaker 1: say last night a lot of that Rokie Susaki's bullpen
- 22:14Speaker 1: performance was the greatest performance by a reliever ever, or
- 22:17Speaker 1: something like that.
- 22:17Speaker 3: I did not hear that part, And I know you're
- 22:20Speaker 3: you have somebody else in mind who is a Ken.
- 22:23Speaker 1: All right, all right, you're talking about one of the
- 22:25Speaker 1: great all time appearances out of the pen that I
- 22:28Speaker 1: can remember.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Dave, Let's go back to twenty fourteen. Now, I know
- 22:32Speaker 2: it's a long time ago.
- 22:33Speaker 1: At this point, Madison Wilmgarner closing out the World Series
- 22:36Speaker 1: with five less. I think that's a little bit better
- 22:39Speaker 1: than Listen Rosenthal.
- 22:43Speaker 3: No Dodger fan or manager wants to remember twenty fourteen
- 22:46Speaker 3: in the San Francisco Giants. We just blocked that out completely.
- 22:49Speaker 3: I did have a text conversation with Dave Roberts this
- 22:51Speaker 3: morning about Roki Sasaki, and I talked to him about
- 22:54Speaker 3: what a transition, right, Remember back early on when Roki
- 22:58Speaker 3: Sasaki was in the dugout crying because of a bad performance.
- 23:01Speaker 3: It was almost as if he didn't understand, you know,
- 23:03Speaker 3: he'd not understand that's not fair. Didn't It's a difficult
- 23:07Speaker 3: it's a difficult transition right from Japan to Major League Baseball.
- 23:10Speaker 3: And Dave was like, if you take that picture, like
- 23:12Speaker 3: we are right now side by side of Roki Sasaki
- 23:14Speaker 3: crying and then striking out J t rail Muto, what
- 23:18Speaker 3: is stark contrast? So, yes, Roki is the Dodgers closer.
- 23:22Speaker 3: I did not know that that team needed. Okay, who
- 23:25Speaker 3: is your doork of the week?
- 23:27Speaker 1: Well, my doork of the week goes back to the
- 23:28Speaker 1: New York Yankees and the performance of their players, and
- 23:31Speaker 1: I'm going to give it to all of their hitters
- 23:33Speaker 1: besides Aaron Judge. Now I'm being a little unfare Toeram
- 23:36Speaker 1: McMahon and John Carlos Stanton, who were not horrible, but
- 23:39Speaker 1: the offense outside of Judge, granted, they faced great pitching,
- 23:43Speaker 1: particularly in the first two games. The starters Gossman and
- 23:45Speaker 1: Ya Savage and then the bullpen.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Game in Game four.
- 23:49Speaker 1: But come on, the Yankees are built on offense. They
- 23:52Speaker 1: had the highest scoring offense in the major leagues. Yes,
- 23:54Speaker 1: the most home runs as well, but they could score
- 23:57Speaker 1: in other ways and they simply did not produce. So
- 23:59Speaker 1: the Yankee the hitters other than Judge dorks of the week.
- 24:02Speaker 3: All right, my dork of the week, I'm on a
- 24:04Speaker 3: preemptive strike here. Ken I'm not saying these people are
- 24:06Speaker 3: dorks yet, but let's make sure they don't become dorks.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Anybody that wants to give a Ryan Kirker in grief
- 24:12Speaker 3: or crap about what happened, do not do not do that.
- 24:16Speaker 3: I understand you can be upset about what had happened
- 24:19Speaker 3: in that situation, but let's not put the way to
- 24:22Speaker 3: the world on this young man who already feels horrific
- 24:25Speaker 3: about what happened. Again, as Pedro Martinez said, do not
- 24:28Speaker 3: let his talent, this talent carry the load for the
- 24:31Speaker 3: rest of his career. He's a very good picture, a
- 24:34Speaker 3: very good talent, and he has good he has a
- 24:37Speaker 3: great career ahead. So let's be kind.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Alan.
- 24:39Speaker 1: I've got a prediction Opening day next year, Philadelphia standing
- 24:43Speaker 1: ovation for Ryan I hope so it helped me.
- 24:47Speaker 3: You know, let's do it absolutely Mookie Betts when he
- 24:50Speaker 3: was you know, hitting a buck and they gave him
- 24:52Speaker 3: a standing way that helped you. By the way, extra
- 24:55Speaker 3: credit as far as due to the week, we should
- 24:57Speaker 3: have said this earlier to Nick Castellanos who absolutely bolted
- 25:00Speaker 3: in and from right field to comfort Ryan Kirkering on
- 25:06Speaker 3: the mound.
- 25:07Speaker 4: Imagine where imagine where.
- 25:08Speaker 3: Nick Castillanos was, obviously, and you saw him walking with
- 25:12Speaker 3: Kirkering into the dugout before Rob Thompson stopped him to
- 25:16Speaker 3: talk to Kirkering. Good on you, Nick Castillanos for holding
- 25:19Speaker 3: up one of your one of your teammates. I mean,
- 25:22Speaker 3: it's this is this is why we love this game.
- 25:24Speaker 3: But remember, guys, they're people before their players.
- 25:28Speaker 1: No no doubt, and Nick did great things there and
- 25:31Speaker 1: really the entire clubhouse rallied around him last night because
- 25:34Speaker 1: as you said, Alan, and we'll maybe close it out
- 25:37Speaker 1: with this, the players understand, man, they understand better than anyone,
- 25:41Speaker 1: and they know how difficult the game is to play.
- 25:44Speaker 4: No doubt about it.
- 25:45Speaker 3: All right, if you're watching on TV, thank you so
- 25:46Speaker 3: much for joining us. We appreciate you time. We have
- 25:50Speaker 3: a couple more minutes back here, and that's it. We're
- 25:55Speaker 3: back on Monday eight
