Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi everyone. I'm Tim from the Melbourne Black Grinding guest band. Month.
- 0:07Speaker 1: We've got a tour coming up very shortly, starting at
- 0:10Speaker 1: the end of next week. We'll be in Newcastle on
- 0:14Speaker 1: the thirteenth of March, on the fourteenth, in Sydney, on
- 0:17Speaker 1: the fifteenth, in Penruth, the twentieth in Melbourne, twenty first Frankston,
- 0:23Speaker 1: twenty seventh, Brisbane twenty eighth, Nambour, twenty ninth, Gold Coast
- 0:28Speaker 1: and last day will be the fourth of April in Adelaide.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Fantastic teen banks for joining us today.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Mate, nowhere is glad to be here.
- 0:36Speaker 2: All right.
- 0:37Speaker 3: So before we get to the troll, we'll talk about
- 0:39Speaker 3: the reason why you're actually going on touring. It's because
- 0:42Speaker 3: you released your debut four length album, The World Is
- 0:45Speaker 3: Not Yours late last year.
- 0:46Speaker 2: So how's the early reception been for it?
- 0:49Speaker 1: Pretty great, to be honest, you know, seeing especially doing
- 0:54Speaker 1: some of these interviews and hearing the things that people
- 0:56Speaker 1: have to say about it. It's really encouraging, validating that
- 1:01Speaker 1: it's really spoken to some people or they just really
- 1:04Speaker 1: love the music, and you know, seeing our numbers jump
- 1:08Speaker 1: up dramatically on streaming services, which normally we're not that
- 1:13Speaker 1: fussed by, but it's it is encouraging when you see, wow,
- 1:16Speaker 1: holy shit. A lot of people have really been checking
- 1:19Speaker 1: this out.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Along those lines by like, how do you actually measure
- 1:23Speaker 3: or gauge in the success of a release in the modern age?
- 1:26Speaker 3: Is it streaming numbers? Is it word of mouth? People
- 1:29Speaker 3: tell me what they thought of it as the people
- 1:30Speaker 3: coming to shows.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Hm, I guess it's a personal thing. As a band.
- 1:36Speaker 1: We don't really spend too much time thinking about it,
- 1:38Speaker 1: but I think it would be more word of mouth,
- 1:40Speaker 1: or you know, when someone's cruising around and they happen
- 1:43Speaker 1: to see someone in a month's shirt and you start
- 1:46Speaker 1: seeing it a little bit more often, we're like, that's cool,
- 1:49Speaker 1: you know, because a few years ago it was a
- 1:50Speaker 1: pretty rare thing, and now it's like, I'm starting to
- 1:53Speaker 1: see people Like I go to a gig and I
- 1:55Speaker 1: see a couple of people wearing a shirt. I'm like,
- 1:57Speaker 1: that's pretty awesome.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Ityb be a good feeling, Yeah, very cold.
- 2:02Speaker 3: We dive into the album a little bit deeper, made
- 2:05Speaker 3: and tell us what you were going for musically with it.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess with this one being an album, it
- 2:10Speaker 1: was always going to sort of be. I mean, every
- 2:13Speaker 1: release is intending to be the kind of best thing
- 2:15Speaker 1: that we can produce at the time. But yeah, definitely
- 2:18Speaker 1: with the album, it was trying to take everything that
- 2:20Speaker 1: we'd really done and learned and I guess try to
- 2:24Speaker 1: make some kind of a masterpiece as Monk could make it.
- 2:29Speaker 2: You know.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Yeah, musically, I knew that we all knew that it
- 2:32Speaker 1: was probably going to be a pretty kind of grim.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I mean, it's all of the music's been grim, but
- 2:37Speaker 1: I guess just a little bit more cinematic, I guess
- 2:41Speaker 1: if that makes sense. You know, if you listen to
- 2:43Speaker 1: the whole album, there's various interludes between things, and the
- 2:47Speaker 1: tracks flow and a very kind of it's like taking
- 2:50Speaker 1: you on a journey. And I think that was kind
- 2:52Speaker 1: of the thing we'd all agreed on, that we wanted
- 2:54Speaker 1: the album to take the listener on a journey.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Yeah, girl, And you released a single a duel of
- 2:59Speaker 3: fractures that, so just say, if that's all that somebody's heard,
- 3:03Speaker 3: is that a good sonic representation of the whole album
- 3:05Speaker 3: or is it just scratching the surface.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Oh, I think I think it's a pretty great representation
- 3:09Speaker 1: of us as a band. I mean, it's got a
- 3:11Speaker 1: bit of everything that we've done in the past, So
- 3:15Speaker 1: it being a single for the album is a great
- 3:17Speaker 1: way to if you hadn't heard us, to quickly kind
- 3:21Speaker 1: of summarize what we're about. Yeah.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yeah, And the album blends elements of black metal, that's
- 3:26Speaker 3: death metal, grank kor and hardcore in there.
- 3:28Speaker 2: So there was really such structure.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Of styles and genres to the song or was it
- 3:33Speaker 3: more or less anything goes?
- 3:36Speaker 1: A kind of anything goes, you know, like I would say,
- 3:40Speaker 1: if off the top of my head, I feel like
- 3:42Speaker 1: three quarters of the album are new songs, and then
- 3:46Speaker 1: the last quarter, like maybe three or so songs are
- 3:49Speaker 1: older songs that we'd had sitting around, And I guess
- 3:53Speaker 1: we were really just trying to find songs that captured
- 3:55Speaker 1: this kind of big I don't like using the word epic,
- 3:58Speaker 1: but I'll say an epic kind of sound, that kind
- 4:01Speaker 1: of cinematic kind of quality. But I know, in the
- 4:05Speaker 1: writing process, you know, we've all contributed songs to it,
- 4:08Speaker 1: like I write songs soldas Bud primarily as a songwriter.
- 4:12Speaker 1: You know, there was some just I guess some of
- 4:15Speaker 1: it was spons spontaneous and some of it was you know,
- 4:18Speaker 1: also thinking about like what's fun for us to play
- 4:22Speaker 1: without you know, without the song sounding too fun, but
- 4:24Speaker 1: just in terms of the energy, that was certainly something
- 4:27Speaker 1: that we thought about, you know, like a song like
- 4:30Speaker 1: Lords of Excess. I think Spud was talking about how
- 4:33Speaker 1: really he wanted to it was standing up playing guitar
- 4:36Speaker 1: because he's like, what feels, you know, good to be
- 4:39Speaker 1: playing while I'm standing up because it's easy to sit
- 4:41Speaker 1: punched over at your computer and you're copying and pasting
- 4:44Speaker 1: riffs in your recording program and you end up with
- 4:47Speaker 1: this thing which is crazy. But maybe it's a bit like,
- 4:50Speaker 1: oh shit, this doesn't feel good to play. So it's yeah,
- 4:54Speaker 1: that's not the primary focus. But I think that that
- 4:57Speaker 1: really drove the songwriting, and I think I think that's
- 5:00Speaker 1: why all the songs really have really a good kind
- 5:04Speaker 1: of vibe and a hook to them.
- 5:07Speaker 2: There's quite a lot gun on there, mate.
- 5:09Speaker 3: So in the creative process, right, how do you find
- 5:11Speaker 3: the balance between genres?
- 5:13Speaker 2: Like how do you know when you've gone too far
- 5:14Speaker 2: in one direction or maybe not far enough in another direction?
- 5:17Speaker 1: Sure? Yeah, well, I guess we debate about it. You've
- 5:21Speaker 1: all got you know, different taste, but pretty similar overlapping tastes.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I think at the end of the day, I mean,
- 5:28Speaker 1: this could change. I'm not saying I wouldn't want it
- 5:31Speaker 1: to change, but I would be happy if it didn't change.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Is that kind of like our very the very earliest
- 5:36Speaker 1: material that Spud did, when it was kind of just
- 5:39Speaker 1: him and some session guys, it really was just a
- 5:42Speaker 1: mixture of black metal and grindcore and power violence. You
- 5:45Speaker 1: know those d beats, the dark grim minor chords with
- 5:50Speaker 1: blast beats, just get in, get out. I feel like
- 5:52Speaker 1: you're being punched in the face kind of, but it's
- 5:55Speaker 1: like evil and kind of oppressive. That's kind of the
- 5:58Speaker 1: core sound, you know. And one point in time where
- 6:02Speaker 1: things changed is towards Extinction twenty eighteen. Before that we
- 6:06Speaker 1: had Soul joining as a second guitarist, because I remember
- 6:09Speaker 1: when I joined the band there wasn't a second guitarist,
- 6:12Speaker 1: and it was like, gosh, we had a second guitarist.
- 6:14Speaker 1: We could do so much more with layers and leads
- 6:16Speaker 1: and atmosphere. So I guess it's just I guess it's
- 6:20Speaker 1: just a process over time. You know, some bands, I
- 6:23Speaker 1: don't know what goes on for them. But maybe they've
- 6:25Speaker 1: got a commitment whether like we're not going outside of
- 6:28Speaker 1: this and they will not do it.
- 6:30Speaker 2: You know.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Maybe an example might be the Black Dahlia Murder. As
- 6:33Speaker 1: you know, they're a band where pretty much nothing's changed.
- 6:36Speaker 1: It's fucking all of it's fucking sick, and they could
- 6:38Speaker 1: have gone, oh, we're going to make a song that
- 6:40Speaker 1: sounds like an Opeth song, We're going to have post
- 6:42Speaker 1: metal delay reverb leads. They could have tried it and
- 6:45Speaker 1: it would have been sick, but there's stuck to it
- 6:48Speaker 1: the end of the day. I think we're all kind
- 6:50Speaker 1: of I guess maybe itchy music, itchy creative people where
- 6:55Speaker 1: we're like, we want to try different things and will
- 6:58Speaker 1: veer out a bit, not too far, but we won't
- 7:00Speaker 1: put things off loft limits. And you know, there are
- 7:04Speaker 1: things that were maybe in some of the songs that
- 7:07Speaker 1: in the demo versions that didn't end up in the album,
- 7:10Speaker 1: but we're willing to try things.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Yeah right, Yeah, So for the ol school fans that
- 7:15Speaker 3: have been with you for a while, like how would
- 7:16Speaker 3: you say the world is not yours? Differs musically to
- 7:19Speaker 3: the first two webs towards extension.
- 7:22Speaker 2: And pain au Borus.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's certainly, it's definitely a journey. We
- 7:32Speaker 1: did spend a bit more time kind of constructing things
- 7:36Speaker 1: to have a bit more of a flow. Yeah, Like
- 7:39Speaker 1: I've primarily done the ambient kind of electronic interludes with
- 7:43Speaker 1: some light samples contributed by a like Spud to assist
- 7:47Speaker 1: with that. But I don't think musically a lot's changed.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I think it's really kind of just. I mean, pain
- 7:55Speaker 1: or Buros almost was an album we probably had up.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I mean, we've always had heaps of demos, but at
- 8:01Speaker 1: the time we could have gone, well, here's four songs,
- 8:04Speaker 1: here's another six songs, let's do it, but we decided
- 8:06Speaker 1: not to because that wouldn't feel right. We didn't want
- 8:09Speaker 1: to spend the time and money on putting that in.
- 8:13Speaker 1: So I guess it's just if you've loved everything we've
- 8:16Speaker 1: done before, this is all of it, probably at its
- 8:19Speaker 1: currently most matured and focused right now.
- 8:23Speaker 2: We spoke about this before, Brobert.
- 8:25Speaker 3: You set out for a run of East Coast states
- 8:27Speaker 3: starting in Newcastle on March the thirteenth, and as you say,
- 8:30Speaker 3: you go through Penrith, Melbourne, Frankston, Brisbane, Nambour, Gold Coast
- 8:34Speaker 3: and finally Adelaide.
- 8:36Speaker 2: So not a bad run of serve mate, keep yourself busy.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Absolutely, you know, I think we we almost had a
- 8:44Speaker 1: couple more dates in there, and we were just like, oh,
- 8:46Speaker 1: let's not, let's not push ourselves that hard, because even
- 8:50Speaker 1: though it's not consecutive day after day after day after day,
- 8:54Speaker 1: it's still no it's a lot. It's the biggest tool
- 8:56Speaker 1: we've done. So it'd be exciting to get out to
- 9:00Speaker 1: places we've never been before and meet new people and
- 9:03Speaker 1: hopefully hopefully win over some new fans and get to
- 9:05Speaker 1: some cities and venues and scenes where we've been before.
- 9:09Speaker 1: And you know, some of those people, unless they've come
- 9:12Speaker 1: down to Melbourne for whatever reason, they wouldn't have seen
- 9:16Speaker 1: us since twenty eighteen. So yeah, it's exciting.
- 9:19Speaker 3: It's left for the benefit of those people who might
- 9:21Speaker 3: not have seen it since twenty eighteen or at all.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Runs through a typical month live show and read what
- 9:26Speaker 3: people can expect.
- 9:29Speaker 1: You know, we're all, you know, we try to keep
- 9:32Speaker 1: the chaos in our performances. Maybe we're getting a bit
- 9:35Speaker 1: older and we're not willing to break our backs doing
- 9:37Speaker 1: you know, jump kicks across the stage and all this
- 9:40Speaker 1: sort of stuff, but it's pretty chaotic. You know, we
- 9:43Speaker 1: rehearse really hard so that we were one hundred percent
- 9:47Speaker 1: spot on, and then from that point we can kind
- 9:49Speaker 1: of cut loose and you know, have a convincingly ferocious
- 9:54Speaker 1: and if not a little bit threatening performance, threatening just
- 9:58Speaker 1: in the sense that the music. Yes, it's kind of
- 10:01Speaker 1: it's kind of catchy, it's energetic, but it's pretty bleak.
- 10:04Speaker 1: It's pretty aggressive, and we want, if we want, someone
- 10:06Speaker 1: to kind of feel that energy when they come and
- 10:09Speaker 1: see a performance. So I think from all of the
- 10:12Speaker 1: reviews that definitely comes across.
- 10:15Speaker 3: And where can people find out about these gigs or
- 10:18Speaker 3: keep up to date with the band?
- 10:19Speaker 1: Well, I would go and follow us on Instagram and
- 10:23Speaker 1: Facebook at look just look up monk grind. Unfortunately, Meta
- 10:27Speaker 1: doesn't like us just having mount as our account name.
- 10:32Speaker 1: You could probably guess multiple reasons why that is, but
- 10:35Speaker 1: monk grind is where you'll find us. You can also
- 10:37Speaker 1: go to montgrind dot com dot au to get merch
- 10:40Speaker 1: check out all of our other stuff. Links to our
- 10:42Speaker 1: band camp YouTube. We've just done a guitar playthrough of
- 10:47Speaker 1: the song Dominion from the album. You can you'll find
- 10:50Speaker 1: that on our socials and lastly also just about the tour.

- 10:57Speaker 1: big shout out to Greg. He's he's the main man

- 11:01Speaker 3: And he's a good man as well. He is all right, well,
- 11:05Speaker 3: thanks very much for your time, bro. The album The
- 11:07Speaker 3: World Is Not Yours is out now. The chur kicks
- 11:10Speaker 3: off very surely much of that in the Newcastle say
- 11:13Speaker 3: get along see the show and Rocky out with the boys.
