- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Wednesday, it is the 24th
- 0:17of April and welcome along. Thank you for tapping on play
- 0:22and inviting me into your day so that we can do another day of
- 0:26our tradition of reading a chapter of the Bible together.
- 0:29Today being April 24th, as I've just learned, is the annual
- 0:33celebration of the coronation of Pope Benedict when Joe Ratzinger
- 0:38became the Pope. That was 19 years ago, and when
- 0:43Avon and I were in Rome all that time ago, he was the Pope and we
- 0:48went along to Saint Peters Square.
- 0:49For us, I think it's his Wednesday sermon to the masses.
- 0:54And there we stood and he preached A sermon, which well,
- 0:58there was a papal sermon. It was middle of the road.
- 1:00It was fantastic. It was brief and he finished
- 1:02preaching it. And then he preached in a second
- 1:04language and then a third language and then a fourth.
- 1:07I think it was six or seven different languages.
- 1:10This dude preached his sermon in and even, and I looked at each
- 1:13other and we're like, we don't know how good you are as a Pope,
- 1:16but as a linguist, Oh, man, what an absolutely extraordinary guy.
- 1:21So for whatever he was remembered for, he will always
- 1:25be amazing in my estimation as a guy who could preach a sermon in
- 1:31six or seven different languages.
- 1:32Wow, very impressive. And now my brain is working
- 1:37overtime trying to come up with a segue from linguistic language
- 1:40talent to our Bible reading today, which is all about
- 1:44Absalom returning to his father. And I am struggling.
- 1:51The language of forgiveness. Yeah, I'm not even gonna try.
- 1:53Let us just begin our days reading.
- 1:56We are gonna continue on this story.
- 1:58After Absalom has murdered his brother and fled for a number of
- 2:02years, it's time to get the family back together again.
- 2:05So let's read together. In Second Samuel Chapter 14,
- 2:19Job realised how much the king longed to see Absalom, so he
- 2:24sent for a woman from Toccoa who had a reputation for great
- 2:28wisdom. He said to her, pretend you are
- 2:31in mourning. Wear mourning clothes and don't
- 2:34put on lotions. Act like a woman who has been
- 2:37mourning for the dead for a long time.
- 2:40Then go to the King and tell him the story I'm about to tell you.
- 2:45Then Joeb told her what to say. When the woman from Tonkawa
- 2:50approached the king, she bowed with her face to the ground and
- 2:53deep respect and cried out. Oh king, help me watch the
- 2:58trouble. The king asked.
- 3:00Alas, I'm a widow. She replied.
- 3:04My husband is dead. My two sons had a fight out in
- 3:07the field and since no one was there to stop it, one of them
- 3:11was killed. Now the rest of the family is
- 3:14demanding. Let us have your son.
- 3:17We will execute him for murdering his brother.
- 3:20He doesn't deserve to inherit his family's property.
- 3:23They want to extinguish the only coal I have left, and my
- 3:27husband's name and family will disappear from the face of the
- 3:30earth. Leave it to me, the king told
- 3:33her. Go home, and I'll see to it that
- 3:36no one touches him. Oh, thank you, my Lord the king,
- 3:41the woman from Tonkawa replied. If you are criticised for
- 3:45helping me, let the blame fall on me and my father's house and
- 3:49let the king and his throne be innocent.
- 3:52If anyone objects, the king said, bring him to me.
- 3:56I can assure you he will never harm you again.
- 4:00Then she said, Please swear to me by the Lord your God that you
- 4:04won't let anyone take vengeance against my son.
- 4:07I want no more bloodshed as surely as the Lord lives, he
- 4:12replied. Not a hair on your son's head
- 4:14will be disturbed. Please allow me to ask one more
- 4:18thing of my Lord the King, she said.
- 4:22Go ahead and speak, he responded.
- 4:25She replied, Why don't you do as such for the people of God, as
- 4:30you have promised to do for me? You have convinced yourself in
- 4:33making this decision because you have refused to bring home your
- 4:37own banished son. All of us must die eventually.
- 4:42Our lives are like water spilled out on the ground which cannot
- 4:46be gathered up again. But God doesn't just sweep life
- 4:49away. Instead, He devises ways to
- 4:53bring us back when we have been separated from Him.
- 4:57I have come to plead with my Lord the King because people
- 5:00have threatened me, I said to myself.
- 5:03Perhaps the King will listen to me and rescue us from those who
- 5:07would cut us off from the inheritance God has given us.
- 5:11Yes, my Lord, the King will give us Peace of Mind again.
- 5:15I know that you are like an Angel of God and discerning good
- 5:19from evil. May the Lord your God be with
- 5:22you. I must know one thing, the king
- 5:26replied. And tell me the truth.
- 5:28Yes, my Lord the King, she responded.
- 5:32Did Joab put you up to this? And the woman replied, My Lord
- 5:37the king, how can I deny it? Nobody can hide anything from
- 5:42you. Yes, Joab sent me and told me
- 5:45what to say. He did it to place the matter
- 5:48before you in a different light. But you are as wise as an Angel
- 5:53of God, and you understand everything that happens among
- 5:56us. So the king sent for Joe, Abin
- 5:59told him. Alright, go and bring back the
- 6:03young man. Absalom Joab bowed with his face
- 6:07to the ground and deep respect, and said, At last I know that I
- 6:11have gained your approval, my Lord the King, for you have
- 6:15granted me this request. Then Jacob went to Geisha and
- 6:19brought Absalom back to Jerusalem.
- 6:22But the king gave this order. Absalom may go to his own house,
- 6:27but he must never come into my presence.
- 6:31So Absalon did not see the king. Now Absalom was praised as the
- 6:35most handsome man in all Israel. He was flawless from head to
- 6:40foot. He cut his hair only once a
- 6:43year, and then only because it was so heavy.
- 6:46When he waded out, it came to 5 lbs.
- 6:51He had three sons and one daughter.
- 6:53His daughter's name was Tamar and she was very beautiful.
- 6:59Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years, but he never got to
- 7:03see the king. Then Absalon sent for Joe B and
- 7:07asked him to intercede for him, but Joeb refused to come.
- 7:11Absalom sent for him a second time, but Joab refused to come.
- 7:16So Absalom said to his servants, go and set fire to Joe's Barley
- 7:22Field, the field next to mine. So they set his field on fire,
- 7:27as Absalom had commanded. Then Joab came to Absalom at his
- 7:33house and demanded Why did your servants set my field on fire?
- 7:38And Absalom replied. Because I wanted you to ask the
- 7:42king why he brought me back from Gesha.
- 7:45If he didn't intend to see me, I might as well have stayed there.
- 7:50Let me see the king. If he finds me guilty of
- 7:53anything, then let him kill me. So Joab told the king what
- 7:57Absalom had said. Then at last David summoned
- 8:01Absalom, who came and bowed low before the king, and the king
- 8:07kissed him. Lord, truly, you are the God of
- 8:22reconciliation. Not only do you reconcile
- 8:28creation back to you again and again, that you reconcile us,
- 8:34everyone of us, You draw back hour by hour by hour as we
- 8:41broken people live our lives and continue to put sin between you
- 8:45and us. You sanctify us, You wash us
- 8:49clean, and you reconcile us back to you.
- 8:55Thank you for this ongoing work that you do.
- 8:58Thank you that you never get sick of it and turn your back on
- 9:01us. Saying enough is enough, but
- 9:05with your heart bursting with compassion and mercy for us, you
- 9:12reconcile again and again. You're a good, good, loving
- 9:18Father, and we are grateful for your commitment to us, your
- 9:24grateful but hopelessly broken children.
- 9:28So we pray all of these things with great gratitude.
- 9:32And the saving name of Jesus. Ah, man.
