You walk up to a stall and you see a pile of oranges. You want one kilo. How do you say 'I want one kilo of oranges'? In Amharic: አንድ ኪሎ ብርቱካን እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: አንድ ኪሎ ብርቱካን እፈልጋለሁ. Oof, that's a lot. Let me break it down: አንድ ኪሎ — one kilo — ብርቱካን — oranges — እፈልጋለሁ — I want. Lucas: You got it. Now the seller will tell you the price. Probably something like አራት ብር ነው — it's four birr. But first, you can ask: ስንት ነው? — how much is it? Luna: ስንት ነው? I remember that from the market episodes. So I ask ስንት ነው? and they say አራት ብር ነው. Lucas: Right. Then you say okay, and you can say እባክህ — please. So the whole exchange: you: አንድ ኪሎ ብርቱካን እፈልጋለሁ. Seller: አራት ብር ነው. You: እባክህ. Luna: Let me try the whole thing. አንድ ኪሎ ብርቱካን እፈልጋለሁ. ስንት ነው? አራት ብር ነው? እባክህ. Lucas: Almost perfect. The seller says አራት ብር ነው, not a question. So you ask ስንት ነው? and they answer አራት ብር ነው. Then you say እባክህ. Luna: Right, right. So: አንድ ኪሎ ብርቱካን እፈልጋለሁ. ስንት ነው? አራት ብር ነው. እባክህ. Lucas: There you go. You just bought oranges. Let's say each phrase once more. ብርቱካን. Luna: ብርቱካን. Lucas: አንድ ኪሎ ብርቱካን እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: አንድ ኪሎ ብርቱካን እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: ስንት ነው? Luna: ስንት ነው? Lucas: አራት ብር ነው. Luna: አራት ብር ነው. Lucas: እባክህ. Luna: እባክህ. Okay, I think I've got it. Practice at the market: start with ብርቱካን, then say you want one kilo, ask the price, hear the answer, and say please. Lucas: Exactly. And remember, you can use እፈልጋለሁ with any fruit.
