- 1:27Hiatus, as everyone feeling tonight, Feeling Good, Feeling
- 1:32Good, Man. Sterling got a broke pinky, but
- 1:35we Still Ballin over here we are.
- 1:39I hear you man. You know, those those sports
- 1:42injuries, especially those nagging one's kind of a pain in
- 1:45the ass, man. Yeah, that face play slow you
- 1:48down but at least it's something that he can kind of play through
- 1:50in the short term, right? 100%.
- 1:53Yeah, we made them a little A bit more aware to made it, love
- 1:56it a little bit more. You know, you want to be lazy
- 1:58sometimes and then you break a pinky and you have to miss a
- 2:01game. And then you like, oh I can't
- 2:03wait to get back in there and hit.
- 2:04I can't wait to do something so, you know it made angle, so I'm
- 2:07happy to happen. But if it happened at least it
- 2:09was something that he's able to play through.
- 2:12Make some love it a little bit more.
- 2:14Absolutely here, man. We just we we finally are done
- 2:17with baseball for the year. Oh, Donald baseball in time.
- 2:23Pool Time. Pool time at the pool but
- 2:25baseball ended Good. The oldest son's team won his
- 2:28division championship and the your point he was kind of sad we
- 2:33were driving home that night and he was like I'm kind of sad he's
- 2:37like I'm going to go back and play with you guys anymore.
- 2:39Yeah this year. Okay okay so other than that we
- 2:44are yeah a lot of pool right now.
- 2:46A lot of sunshine lot of playing outside until the Sun starts
- 2:51said in here. I mean Give me one of them
- 2:53pulls, man. Yes, if you get into a pool
- 2:56shell, how you doing, man? That's not your usual background
- 2:59right there. It is not, I am in a fancy
- 3:02pantsy apartment here, in Salt Lake City, taking a week-long
- 3:05vacation out here in Utah, with the little Airbnb.
- 3:08So, I've been doing some hiking, some outdoor stuff and also just
- 3:11experienced the talents, but it's been awesome.
- 3:13It's been the trip of a lifetime really So that is all for they
- 3:18say if a bear or something starts chasing, you supposed to
- 3:20get big and make a lot of noise. So yes, Greg never never run
- 3:26away from a bear. That tells a that your prey,
- 3:28okay? Okay?
- 3:30Post that motherfucker in the mouth, unless it's the cocaine,
- 3:34but, and you're done now. You can, he's not, he's not in
- 3:38Gatlinburg. I just saw the movie
- 4:11in the college football game. We all went through, we got our
- 4:16know, It's we've got stuff we wanted to talk about but before
- 4:18we get to all that fun stuff and we definitely want you all to be
- 4:21interact and we get to that, we got to talk Rudin because it's
- 4:26been a little while since we discussed recruits and I first
- 4:29want to start with the transfer portal because the day,
- 4:33literally the day that we were talking to coach pry.
- 4:38Antoine Ryland Powell who was in the portal from Florida,
- 4:42transfers up to the Hokies originally Indian River High
- 4:46School down in Portsmouth, he transfers with two years of
- 4:49Eligibility left from the Florida Gators.
- 4:51Something we had talked about about a month ago.
- 4:54Defensive line was key, right? We had lost a younger player.
- 4:59Tell him a pitch to you first. What do you think?
- 5:01You think we upgraded it line with getting?
- 5:04This is definitely definitely upgraded at the line.
- 5:07But what I liked about Out that pickup was just circling the
- 5:11wagons pretty much you know had a shot at the kid out of high
- 5:15school for whatever reason. We don't land in this new staff
- 5:20comes in, we go 3 and 8 which is not very good and this kids
- 5:27coming from Florida and somebody on that staff said hey we got a
- 5:33vision, they had some kind of connection with somebody that he
- 5:37knows or him. Glenn we get in and we get him
- 5:40to come home. Yeah, you know like that.
- 5:42That is where that is where football has to go for us.
- 5:47You know, you miss on recruit. You don't say screw you have a
- 5:51nice life. No, it's still check on him.
- 5:54Hey man I seen your first game. You got your first snap, keep
- 5:58grinding and keep it moving. You know what I'm saying?
- 6:01Like, that's what it has to be. That's what college football has
- 6:03to be now because at any point, somebody can go, hey, I'm ready
- 6:07to leave. I'm ready to transfer back home
- 6:09closer to home. So I think that definitely great
- 6:14job filling a spot of Need For Us.
- 6:17Great job and he's going to come in and play, you know, so that's
- 6:21awesome. Definitely going to come in and
- 6:23play and that connection was going welfare.
- 6:25Be Glenwood. The director of high school
- 6:27relations for the Hokies was his coach down at Indian River.
- 6:31So not only having him but I think again, it's the vision
- 6:34because your point tally, three and eight grand, you know, three
- 6:39and eight football teams don't shouldn't be getting guys.
- 6:42Like pal who have had success. I mean, because we take a look
- 6:45at his numbers here in sort of a part-time role last year.
- 6:48Yet, you know, right at 30 tackles three sacks, three
- 6:51forced fumbles. And that was a part-time role
- 6:55and you know, he's 63 is about 245 pounds slightly undersized.
- 6:59But Just just rushing to pass. Just kidding.
- 7:04Yeah, yeah and you know like tally said definitely position
- 7:07need that. We've talked about here, you
- 7:10know, we were saying if we need to get a d and we need to get an
- 7:14offensive lineman who we need to get somebody to play, DB whether
- 7:17it be a safety or some sort of nickel Corner.
- 7:20Hybrid type player went out. Got one took care of business
- 7:25there and probably got the best one that we had a chance at
- 7:29getting right into. Terms of the relationships that
- 7:32we had there previously, you know, connections to Virginia,
- 7:35obviously from Indian River. They're so kind of give the best
- 7:39one on the board that you feel like you have a legitimate shot
- 7:42at that. That's, that's good.
- 7:44That's that you're closing in on the, on the realistic goals
- 7:47there. So I think that's, that's a big
- 7:49thing to do. And I mean, he's shown, he's a
- 7:52player and limited roles. I'm hoping that he's going to
- 7:54step into that in a larger role with the Hokies.
- 7:58If he can come out there and You're still that starting job
- 8:03in kind of solidify that other side of the defensive line and
- 8:06that the DN position that's going to be big for us, because
- 8:08that's, that's something that we need going into the season,
- 8:11100%, 100%. So big get there.
- 8:14And you know, one too many days ago, we got another one in some
- 8:20other place, we talked about right offensive line this time.
- 8:23And it's not a division, one transfer but it's effectively an
- 8:26FCS got coming up and that's Clayton.
- 8:29Frady who's Transferring up from Gardner.
- 8:32Webb had been a three-year starter down there because he's
- 8:36a covid guy. He has two more years of
- 8:38Eligibility. Love play tackle there, I know,
- 8:41Brian, I know you looked a little of his tape, where do you
- 8:45foresee him? And you know, there's been some
- 8:47discussion that he's not as good as certain current offensive
- 8:52lineman, but if they went and got him, there's a reason
- 8:56because if you feel good about who you're currently got, you're
- 8:59not just going to go out and waste.
- 9:00Actively a roster spot to me on depth.
- 9:05Yeah you know looking at him I feel like there's there's some
- 9:08potential there. I'm hoping he's a guy that can
- 9:11slide in maybe two guard even though he's more of a more of a
- 9:16tackle if he can slide inside to guard I think that would be a
- 9:21better fit for him. I think that would with with the
- 9:23Step Up in competition. I think he's athletic enough to
- 9:26make that work and that would you know, get Get someone a
- 9:31little more shuffling on the interior there, which is
- 9:34probably where we're the most unsteady in terms of front-line.
- 9:39I feel like we're pretty solid at the tackles in terms of the
- 9:43Frontline, very sketchy on depth.
- 9:48So we'll see how that works out. But you know, we look at
- 9:52offensive line. We're talking about getting the
- 9:54best five out there, that can work together as a unit.
- 9:57So not necessarily the most talented five, but we're looking
- 9:59for the That make us the best as a unit.
- 10:03So it remains to be seen what that's going to look like by the
- 10:06time you know, September rolls around.
- 10:09Yeah. Definitely definitely has to go.
- 10:13It not any elements. A tally.
- 10:15What do you got? Just saying just you know
- 10:17definitely always good to get somebody who's has had some
- 10:22significant snaps so that helps, you know, coming in and being
- 10:28able to fight for The spot. I don't know if he comes in and
- 10:32starts, but I think that they want them to come in and start,
- 10:35but even if he doesn't, somebody else steps their game up and
- 10:37say, how I'm ready to fight like Coach Price said, on the, on the
- 10:43last part. If you hadn't go, listen to it.
- 10:45Go listen to it. Where you mean, you've been in
- 10:47Utah, with with, with Sheldon, you need to go back and listen
- 10:50to our last part, with Coach Brown, he said, hey I'm bringing
- 10:53in people to take your spot, you know.
- 10:56So as an offensive lineman, this this summer youth Hey, I'm not
- 11:01letting somebody come in and take my spot.
- 11:03So if he does come in as a as a, you know, a transfer and it's
- 11:08able to give us some some snaps as a death play and I still do
- 11:13it because you hate to say it but somebody's gonna get hurt.
- 11:16You know, somebody's going to get the toes stepped on,
- 11:18whatever the case may be, so we just need somebody's the five
- 11:22best. Like you said, not that have to
- 11:25be the most five, talented. But the five best it's going to
- 11:29work the best together. And go get the job done.
- 11:32So I like to pick up there for me.
- 11:34Yeah, and I take a look at it too.
- 11:38Is he played right tackle and he was all big style.
- 11:41He got some, you know, some preseason All-American honors
- 11:43but he played right tackle. I looked at that in that I think
- 11:49we've all said about, we chaplains physicalness.
- 11:53Little more big, more Parker. It's the right side, right.
- 11:58If a guy's playing right? Taylor, Brian Point can slip in
- 12:00and make that move for that. So again your portal Seasons
- 12:08effectively over, you know, the only thing we kind of didn't hit
- 12:13was a defensive back but I think again is that because we got
- 12:18some guys who are pretty pretty well regarded coming in.
- 12:23Actually take out that they're all there.
- 12:25Now everybody finished enrollments.
- 12:27Everybody's everybody's they're doing summer workouts we're
- 12:30seeing social media hit that up so it'll be interesting.
- 12:34Well thank you. I think the big thing with that
- 12:35is that when we looked at the three positions that we said
- 12:39we're in need, they were to where we needed for sure
- 12:43Frontline. Or like first line depth.
- 12:46Yep. Help you with those DD and
- 12:49offensive line. We needed somebody.
- 12:50We need an extra body there. We've got bodies in the DB
- 12:55Arena. We just had probably a little
- 12:57bit more unproven talent that I think we'd like, so if, if I had
- 13:02to way where I was going to fill in, if you only had to take two
- 13:06of the three, that's the to I would have been a hundred
- 13:08percent because what, because with the defensive backs we
- 13:11already feel, it was that we needed the fourth.
- 13:14We needed that fourth Corner. They could do a little bit of
- 13:17everything, so we'll see how it plays during the season.
- 13:20I, let's flip over to the class of 2014.
- 13:22Or and it looks like it might be turning into a really good one.
- 13:28Currently 24/7 has us overall at the 24/7 level at 24 and
- 13:34composite rank at 24. Y'all fixin seeking a cc6 in the
- 13:40ACC. It's June, it's June.
- 13:44We're going to discuss anything, but several June's ago, it won't
- 13:48looking good but now it's looking much better and we have
- 13:52had basically a six-pack of players recruit or commit over
- 13:56the last few days and I want to start the one in this is this is
- 14:00way back, you know, a few weeks ago actually write out a week
- 14:03ago. June in June was Tommy.
- 14:06Ricard A6 that for 265 interior offensive.
- 14:11Lineman from Hudson, Ohio, a 87 by 24/7, top 30 player in the
- 14:21state of Ohio top 60 interior offensive.
- 14:24Lineman I'm going to pitch to Brian on this one.
- 14:28Brian. What do you what do you think of
- 14:31time? Because I know you probably
- 14:32looked a little tape. Yeah I mean pretty solid recruit
- 14:36over. 87 on 24/7 right there about the same level composite.
- 14:45I mean looks good. Yeah.
- 14:47Similar problems to a lot of offensive linemen coming out of
- 14:51high school. You know, could use a little bit
- 14:53better work with is with his hands and his feet, but I think
- 14:57he's got a good motor and I think he's going to be a good
- 15:00player for us. We'll see how he develops.
- 15:03Offensive line is such a crap, shoot, a lot of times as far as
- 15:07You know, how, what, what are the ceiling?
- 15:09Where is, where is the Sealy you gets really hard to tell.
- 15:11Where that ceiling is kind of coming out of high school, but I
- 15:13think he's a solid guy that I think will grow into the
- 15:15position and, and give us some some good overall action
- 15:23long-term. We'll just see if he's going to
- 15:24develop into a starting caliber player brother than NFL to that
- 15:28helps. Is it really what's the
- 15:31brother's name? Shit, I can't remember.
- 15:33He plays for, he plays for The Ravens.
- 15:39Thank you. The fullback he's actually
- 15:41All-Pro is All-Pro fullback to? Yeah, Patrick I feel well yeah,
- 15:46that he is a damn good fullback. So yeah, that's a good bloodline
- 15:50right there. Yes, I was going to say.
- 15:52So what? And a lot of times people say,
- 15:55you know, that doesn't matter. You know, it's a coach's kid or
- 15:58if it's some NFL bloodline of stuff like that.
- 16:02What that helps is as a athlete you going to hit A wall, you
- 16:08don't know when you're going to hit it, but you're going to hit
- 16:10a wall. When you got somebody who's
- 16:12already been through it. And then they went to the next
- 16:14level, they can tell you. Okay, I know how to help you get
- 16:18through this, so when he gets to college looks like he's 64 to
- 16:2265. It gets there and he goes causes
- 16:25brother up and goes. Hey, man, everybody's bigger
- 16:26than me and faster than me, and he can go, boom.
- 16:30This is what I think you can do. So it helps to have somebody
- 16:33like that, just besides the skill that he has, So I like
- 16:38that the most about him, like Brian said, I watched a little
- 16:40film on him. I think that 87 range is about
- 16:48Where we should be punching on most of our commits, if that's
- 16:53our floor on our commits. I think we have some solid
- 16:56classes, you know, every now and then somebody is going over.
- 17:00Shoot their ranking or undershoot.
- 17:02It but I think when we're going and we're evaluating and we
- 17:05looking at people that 87 range is about what we need to be.
- 17:09We need to stay out of the métis tools and 84s what we had, you
- 17:14know, maybe a couple of years ago and things like that but
- 17:16solid commitment. MIT.
- 17:21Alrighty, so awesome. So I'm glad y'all like Tommy
- 17:24Ricard again, I like the size again.
- 17:27Tell you've been kind of preaching it the last ever since
- 17:30you've been with us, not if they've got that size on the
- 17:33offensive line, it makes it a lot easier.
- 17:36Alright, another guy who has some size for his position and
- 17:39committed is Quinn. Reddish down from Independence,
- 17:43which Independence is a power down in the state of North
- 17:48Carolina. He's 63, he's 185.
- 17:50He's right. There's a three-story.
- 17:51He 634 in the state of North Carolina.
- 17:57What are y'all seeing on him? He's got the body.
- 17:59Yes, he's got the build to be a safety Tally.
- 18:03What do you think of them? It's again, when I'm looking at,
- 18:06I looked at a little bit of film on the kid and I love the 63,
- 18:11you know, I love the 63, almost 200 pounds being in high school.
- 18:16And again, when we talk about rankings, it says right at 85,
- 18:20something like that. He doesn't strike me.
- 18:23From what I've seen as like most Phillips when I looked at his
- 18:28face and I was like yeah he's shooting, he's shooting above
- 18:31his ranking. Like he just looked different,
- 18:35you know what I mean? And it was like he just can't
- 18:37kind of came out of nowhere. Then we send them in the spring.
- 18:39Game and I was like, okay that's what I thought.
- 18:41So he's still in high school. I got to I got to see him for a
- 18:45little bit and check up on him. Not saying he's not going to be
- 18:48a good recruit, but I wasn't as excited about reddish as some
- 18:54people were. But again I'm just the guy
- 18:56behind the computer right now. So I will be watching them.
- 19:00I'll be watching and I hope he does some big things.
- 19:02He's got a year left in high school to turn it up.
- 19:06Right. What do you think of them?
- 19:08Yeah, I'm right there with Tally I feel like he's got a good
- 19:12solid skill set that. He's bringing out the gate.
- 19:16We'll see if he can. You punch above his weight
- 19:18class? I haven't necessarily seen
- 19:20anything that indicates that in the tape, kind of like tally
- 19:22said, but your solid solid pick up and, you know, I think the
- 19:28big thing we're going to talk about this a lot later.
- 19:30But, you know, I think the development for Virginia Tech is
- 19:33going to start leveling up a little bit.
- 19:35So we'll see if he Grow into that position and make some
- 19:37noise. All right, good deal.
- 19:40Well, what's happened over the last two days, has kind of been
- 19:44crazy and it, it started with someone.
- 19:48We're going to bring on just a couple minutes here, but let's
- 19:51talk about the other three that we brought on since then.
- 19:54And it's first of all, let's take Andrew hinch up another
- 19:57Cleveland, kid 65 to 60 on the defensive line.
- 20:02Tally, Tally immediately got happy when he saw that, wait and
- 20:05see. Sighs.
- 20:06He's an 86, he's a top 40, Ohio kid, and just kind of looking at
- 20:11it health, some interest, you know, from West Virginia and
- 20:14some other schools down there in the Mac.
- 20:18But you know, you had JC and Marvin him and all, would he
- 20:23when he committed, everybody's like, offensive linemen
- 20:25defensive lineman, this like that kid tag every defensive
- 20:29coach on the right? Right, I think he's playing
- 20:32defensive line and I don't know me.
- 20:34It's been a whirlwind. That jobs, did anybody bring you
- 20:38the chance to check a little bit of tape out?
- 20:40I looked at a little bit of his tape.
- 20:41Yeah. I mean, I think this is a
- 20:43probably like a solid, good depth pick, right?
- 20:45Out the gate, he's a big kid. You know, I'd say he plays a
- 20:50little bit too high and out of his stance that that'd be my
- 20:53biggest criticism at the gate. But, you know, we'll see what he
- 20:58can do on the defensive side because that's a different ball
- 21:00of wax. So he shows pretty good, pretty
- 21:04good motor. So that's what you're going to
- 21:05need them to do. Benson side of the ball so solid
- 21:08pick up. You know, it's not blowing me
- 21:11away but I think it's a very good solid pick up especially
- 21:14from a big weekend that we had. Yeah, I think I don't know what
- 21:19a lot of people. Some schools, you probably can
- 21:23recruit a certain way, Virginia Tech.
- 21:25I think it's a little bit different.
- 21:27I've never understood people saying, we can take them in
- 21:30December. We can take them in.
- 21:33I feel like where we are and what we're doing.
- 21:36If somebody's if we're interested and they want to come
- 21:40let him come because you are you can always say hey this ain't
- 21:43working out. We got somebody else.
- 21:46Yeah you got to find some way to go but when you're scrambling at
- 21:49the end of a recruiting class and trying to fill a spot is not
- 21:52a good look and that just doesn't work out for us.
- 21:54So I don't like the, we could have took him at another time.
- 21:59So I didn't have a problem with him taking him especially when
- 22:02you're building momentum like we're doing hey man.
- 22:05You got some people, this disinterested in?
- 22:07We're interested. Make it happen.
- 22:09So. Yep.
- 22:10Keep it, keep that train rolling.
- 22:12We need it. We want to roll in all through
- 22:14the summer because if I mean we're so used to come on now.
- 22:17We Virginia Tech fans. We so used to some bad publicity
- 22:20during the summer there. Any positive publicity we get,
- 22:25we happy. So you know, I'm excited about
- 22:28that. 100% a 100% what a the ball, kept rolling and it kept
- 22:32rolling yesterday. Six foot seven.
- 22:36Lb 3 star in 87, rank a top 15 player in the state of New
- 22:40Jersey. New Jersey can put out some, uh,
- 22:42some dogs out there. Aidan Lynch from Mount Olive,
- 22:46High School in Flanders, New Jersey, you know, had quite a
- 22:52kind of quite a few, guys did get some interest from Georgia,
- 22:55Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State.
- 22:57So, he had some eyes on him and he committed to the Hokies.
- 23:01Brian, I know you look at this too.
- 23:02As soon as Brian sees an offensive lineman commit it's
- 23:04like, Paul's what? I'm doing.
- 23:06Yeah, you to take, you got to check it out.
- 23:08He get into the size jumps off, right at the gate.
- 23:11You got good wingspan good-sized.
- 23:14You 67 to 75. That's the kind of size.
- 23:18You like coming out of high school, good player, good.
- 23:23I think he's a little bit more pop.
- 23:24Probably the most polished of the guys that we've talked about
- 23:27today, only from a technique standpoint.
- 23:30So I'm excited about him. Looking for exactly what I was
- 23:33doing it. Right.
- 23:34Exactly what I was going to say Brian because I Check that out a
- 23:36little bit and the problem that you run into with lime and like,
- 23:40that just so big 67 and they play high and it's although all
- 23:47straight. Yeah.
- 23:49But but when he, I mean being 67, he has some pretty like burn
- 23:53said, he's pretty polished with his technique, you know, and
- 23:56saying to be able to use those arms.
- 23:58Those long arms and actually have the technique and not play
- 24:01so high. So I was excited to see.
- 24:04I was excited to see that. That pickup.
- 24:06I think that's a good pick up and I think again, that's where
- 24:09that's our sweet spot. That's what we shoot.
- 24:11So we shoot what? Well, let's talk about the last
- 24:14guy didn't because we shot a little higher for him.
- 24:16And you know what, somebody's going to join us in, just a
- 24:18couple minutes. Told us, it's one more on the
- 24:20way. It's one more on the way and he
- 24:22won't lying. That's Marcellus Barnes jr.
- 24:25And I'm a Cali school down in Chattanooga.
- 24:27Tennessee. A composite for Star.
- 24:30He is right at the 300 national rank.
- 24:33He is a top 10 player. In the state of Tennessee.
- 24:36Now they're ranking him as a corner and a top-25 one at that.
- 24:40And I mean you kind of look at his offer list, you know, you
- 24:43got Florida, stay you got Baylor, you got George.
- 24:45You got a ton of school showing interest in this kid and tally.
- 24:49Would you think I'm because that's kind of down your way
- 24:51near Chattanooga. Yeah.
- 24:52Well, so, yeah. So that's a, that's cool.
- 24:55Did he goes to all boys school? So I know he's got a lot of
- 25:00testosterone built up, you know? And I know women on that campus
- 25:04here in the beginning, See, someone getting to see some
- 25:06women but anyway we'll get out of it, get out as far as a
- 25:10recruit goes watching this tape, he's 62, you know, again you
- 25:15looking at sighs coming from the safety or Corner position and
- 25:20he's coming downhill, and he's making tackles.
- 25:22I seen him. I think somebody posted on
- 25:24Twitter him, setting the edge. If you can get a corner in high
- 25:28school to set a hedge, or a safety to set the edge and turn
- 25:32the playback inside, but also make the play.
- 25:34Yeah, like you free. You're badass.
- 25:36So he brought a party over there.
- 25:39I didn't know much about him. I'm on, I ain't gonna lie to you
- 25:42because I didn't think we had. I mean I've seen him before but
- 25:45I didn't think we had much of a shot but you know like you said,
- 25:49somebody we got coming on, might have played a part in that so we
- 25:52start turning some heads man and shit.
- 25:55Let's go. Let's get it.
- 25:57But that's cool. Did he goes to his a good school
- 25:59to get in? Because that's one of the big
- 26:01schools in Chattanooga. That's about hour and a half
- 26:04away from me, okay? That's a, that's a big school in
- 26:07that I want to stop our house, but they close to.
- 26:10So they can they putting out guys?
- 26:12Yeah, it's a good. It's a good school or something.
- 26:14It's a good school. That's when you start seeing it
- 26:16Brian. Did you get any quick looked at
- 26:18him? May the big thing that stands
- 26:19out to me is just length and size, man.
- 26:22You get a corner that can play with some leverage like that.
- 26:24That's big so big pickup for me. I mean that's one of those guys
- 26:29that, you know, you kind of get one of those from a Virginia
- 26:33Tech perspective. One of those every three or four
- 26:35classes So I mean I think that's a solid pick up 100%.
- 26:39Well I've been teasing it about the last three or four minutes
- 26:42here while talking about it. But let's just be straight up
- 26:45all of this got kicked off by one individual announcing his
- 26:49commitment just few days ago, he's a 64 linebacker.
- 26:53He's 195 pounds per 247. He'll tell us is actually when
- 26:57he gets on here, maybe from st. Vincent Pilate High School in
- 27:00Laurel Maryland. A four-star, both 24/7 in
- 27:05composite a top 24/7, a top 220 player in the country.
- 27:10One of the best players in Maryland.
- 27:12On three says he is the best player in Maryland.
- 27:14I agree with them surprise, guest appearance.
- 27:18Joining us tonight, ladies and gentlemen, Gabe Williams.
- 27:23Gabe. How are you tonight, man?
- 27:25I'm good. How y'all doing?
- 27:27We are doing Jay. Thank you for take for you for
- 27:31messaging, Brian there. And tell us you want to hop on
- 27:33for a few minutes now, because I've been busy, man.
- 27:59You could have went anywhere, you want to First what really
- 28:03caught my eyes coach Brooks. So coach Brooks from Marilyn.
- 28:07He was actually my first offer. So you always had that close
- 28:10relationship and, you know, he's a family friend and stuff like
- 28:13that. So when he told me he was making
- 28:15a move to Virginia, Tech automatically made my list, you
- 28:19know, so I went up there for spring practice I'm like, hold
- 28:21on, I actually like it, you know.
- 28:23And now coach Marvin coach Clinic coach pry a, you know,
- 28:27them just having a vision for me, being the face of the
- 28:29defense and, you know, just doing everything in a defense
- 28:32that really caught my eye. So I knew it was a place for me.
- 28:34I just came back on the official to make sure so.
- 28:38Yeah, and the people there, the environment and the opportunity
- 28:42to come in and make an early impact.
- 28:43That's really what caught my game, right?
- 28:46I don't know how many fan base that you've interacted with,
- 28:49but, okay, a Virginia Tech man. We, we pay attention.
- 28:52We be Darlin it. So when I seen, you get ready to
- 28:55go on your official, I said this motherfucker got a van, a party
- 29:00bus. Oh yeah, he bought the
- 29:02committee. I knew sorry, but that was
- 29:08pretty cool, man. Like again seeing stuff like
- 29:11that from commits like you because a high-profile guy, like
- 29:13yourself man to take your time and do stuff like that to
- 29:18interact with fan base to put just, you know, a minute video
- 29:21out, that's big the fans. And so we appreciate that and
- 29:25thank y'all, man. So when you going to be on the
- 29:29recruiting trip, they talk about whether you go on kind of slide
- 29:32in saying we'll kind of little bit everything what's those
- 29:37discussions been? Like so basically it's really so
- 29:40right now they want me to play the Star position but they said
- 29:43I could play boundary safety the like in the world depend on how
- 29:45much weight I put on it. It's something I can pretty much
- 29:48play everywhere and that's really what I told you caught my
- 29:50eyes. So really in the star does
- 29:53everything he blitzes, he covers place in that and that's pretty
- 29:55much where I show on my highlight.
- 29:57Tape and stuff like that. So it's just like the picture.
- 30:00When you talk about covered I think I heard you talking on, on
- 30:04the foil podcast you said that you play cornering.
- 30:08You just hit a growth spurt, right?
- 30:10Yeah. I was playing safety training
- 30:12with you and then I just caught a growth spurt so they moved up
- 30:15closer to the line. But, you know, so my sophomore
- 30:18year in high school they ever had, like a big receiver or, you
- 30:21know, unguardable dude, that's like me out there.
- 30:23So nice. I still got that in my
- 30:25background stuff like that. Yes, sir.
- 30:28Well, we definitely need that. We got PTSD or six.
- 30:31Get some, our linebackers getting caught on a slot
- 30:35receiver and you put on skates. So help me.
- 30:40I will definitely definitely keeping up with you.
- 30:42It's big to hear that. That's that's part of your skill
- 30:44set as well. Yeah.
- 30:45And I want to ask how big that plays into it because obviously
- 30:48we all seem like a Parsons that is a, that is a that's right
- 30:53from that's coach prize guy, right?
- 30:54We saw him coaching from the beginning to basically, A top-15
- 30:58linebacker pick, you don't see linebackers going the top 15
- 31:01anymore. You just don't, but what he did
- 31:03with Micah it was that versatility when someone when
- 31:06you see that and you see Brent Prime Chris Marv, they know how
- 31:10to use these pieces. They know my skill set.
- 31:13Like you said, you're going to put you out of star.
- 31:16We got to talk to Keyon to Jenkins last year.
- 31:18Who's playing that position currently?
- 31:21And, you know, concert came from a safety position.
- 31:23But when you have someone who has that sort of Degree of
- 31:27building those players and not just all, he's a great
- 31:30linebacker. Mike Parsons can do everything.
- 31:32And man, I hear you saying you play Corner.
- 31:35You're playing safety. You're playing linebacker in
- 31:37high school, this year. How's it feel to go to a coach
- 31:39that, you know, has developed one of the best in the NFL that
- 31:42done. That, it's definitely a plays, a
- 31:45big part because like, you don't want to go like me, I have a lot
- 31:49of big offers, but when they try to tell you your this or this,
- 31:52you know, I'm saying, I want to go somewhere that please me
- 31:55everywhere. I shows all my versatile because
- 31:56I feel like Some separation. That's probably why I'm working
- 31:58so hard because I could do everything, you know I'm saying.
- 32:01So why would I go to a college that's going to turn me into an
- 32:03edge rusher? When I know I could do Ed brush
- 32:05and cover. You know I'm saying?
- 32:06Right there and also that played a big part because join the ACC
- 32:10like I knew a lot of people don't believe it but the ACC has
- 32:13the best athletes, you know? And also I don't have to be 230,
- 32:16you know, saying taking on the huge power 5, lineman, like they
- 32:19got an Iowa Wisconsin. You know I'm saying so it was
- 32:22just a, I was just thinking, you know, You don't listen.
- 32:29It was smart, man. I'm telling you, the best stuff
- 32:49you do. We're going to put you in the
- 32:50best position to do it. And I love that, man, because we
- 32:53got a chance to weeks ago to sit down with Coach Brown right
- 32:56here. But can he some he coached by a
- 33:01great? You coach?
- 33:01Ba Coach? Quin coach, Marv, coach Pride,
- 33:04GoDaddy be like not of people. Most people could it be because
- 33:07UDP was a dog. You know, he wasn't.
- 33:09Oh yeah, he was dog. Yes, he was man and already 68.
- 33:15I'm already plugged in with the other line backers, like trick
- 33:18for me Edmonds. You know, I'm saying, so it's
- 33:20just just the connection that already have with the guys in
- 33:23the people who already walked through this program, you know?
- 33:25And they believe in Maybe so it's really just to believe, you
- 33:28know. So that's really what got me
- 33:30going. Trying to get this 24 class
- 33:31together cuz I'm like like you know the opportunities here
- 33:35y'all just got to come take it, you know?
- 33:37Yeah. And I mean you really hit the
- 33:39ground running man. I really appreciate that.
- 33:41I mean, the engagement that you've been able to generate a
- 33:44wide over the last two or three days has been amazing.
- 33:47And I'm glad the Hokie nation is kind of, you know, rode that
- 33:50wave with you. So that's been good.
- 33:52I think for everybody, that's the way.
- 33:54I feel like that The reason why it was hard for Maryland stuff
- 33:58to recruit me because it didn't have the fanbase, you know?
- 34:01So if you go somewhere with the fan base and makes it easier to
- 34:03recruit, see I'm making my job easier you know, I just tell the
- 34:06guys, like we got a we got a fan base that believes in us, you
- 34:09know, they didn't have the past years that they wanted but
- 34:11they're still here and they're still trying to support the
- 34:13guys, you know, and then I get them on the phone called pride
- 34:16and all them and then you know y'all do y'all work?
- 34:19And then boom. We got another commitment.
- 34:21Is how it works. I'm telling you.
- 34:22It's the philosophy that be manually.
- 34:25Harriet your head is your age man.
- 34:27Like well you you got a long football career to play but you
- 34:31already talking like a I'm a Salesman but that's what I do.
- 34:35Should you talking like a Salesman?
- 34:36I'm ready, man. It's just the way I was
- 34:39recruited. So I know which recruitment
- 34:40works and which does yeah. So yeah, I think I see people
- 34:44already trying to copy. How you doing it though.
- 34:46Hey. I'm just saying it but I see
- 34:52some people trying to use your tactics already and trying to
- 34:56use the tactics. But
- 35:14what you did last night, you said the Dogs Out.
- 35:50Trying to get that done right now, man, I'm trying to be good
- 35:52parents and in January where we can night then we need that.
- 35:59Yeah, get a jump out there, get out there and spring see what
- 36:02you can do against the upperclassmen and I'm going to
- 36:05show you ready to turn up and fall on the show y'all what I
- 36:08can do. And yeah hope the nation
- 36:10everybody who been engaging with Gabe man.
- 36:12Y'all better be on his feet. Checking out his games.
- 36:16You know what I'm saying? When he's posting stuff, I need
- 36:18y'all to get on it, man. Y'all got to keep Yes, it is.
- 36:22And that's what we do. We got some Hokies and we got
- 36:25some tell you. I wish I could tell you
- 36:27everything. I know I'm in trouble.
- 36:30We don't get in trouble if we don't get in trouble right now.
- 36:38We're patient. We're patient.
- 36:39We can wait the thing is I'm not.
- 36:50All right. Y'all heard it here first.
- 36:52It's definitely going to bump us up to 1024 right now, this team.
- 37:00All right, we'll listen Gabe, I don't want to get you in
- 37:03trouble. I'm not now, I appreciate
- 37:05lizard. We appreciate you joining us,
- 37:07man. So we got a bunch of stuff.
- 37:11We hope you listen to rest of the night because what we're
- 37:13talking about and this is the one piece like this.
- 37:15This is one of the pieces were going to talk about tonight.
- 37:17Y'all, how do we return to the power with Virginia Tech?
- 37:20Was gave. You got three guys up here.
- 37:23I turned 40 in a couple months. Brian's 39 tally, 38.
- 37:27We grew up, man. I saw a DB play, we saw X play
- 37:31on the field at man was nasty. We saw JG.
- 37:36We saw Winslow play on the field, we saw Pearson play on
- 37:38the field. We saw all those coaches who are
- 37:40Hokies play, that are going to be coaching, you that played on
- 37:43that field and I hear the passion in your voice and I hear
- 37:47the things you're trying to do, you're trying to bring the best
- 37:49players. It's just a recruit and as a
- 37:52commit right now in, I just, I want to say it.
- 37:56Like, we talking about tonight returning to power, and I think
- 38:00I'm later like, you and that mentality, that's how we're
- 38:03going to get back to where we were and then we will have like
- 38:06five of me, man, it's good. We go baby,
- 38:18you know? So it's going to be Yeah, I do
- 38:22understand but this division start cooking the popcorn right
- 38:26now. Yeah.
- 38:52Come on baby. There we go.
- 38:53Well, being equipped playing around.
- 38:54Let's go bullshit. We appreciate you taking a
- 39:00little bit of your time tonight. 60.
- 39:08Supposed to be 20 25. Yes,
- 39:20have a good evening. We'll continue to chat with you.
- 39:23Oh man. Now you got a, you got a dog up
- 39:25here, talking with the white beard.
- 39:29That's the original. He's the white.
- 39:36He is, he's my second cousin. Yeah, that's the old.
- 39:42He started the vics coming, he started the vics coming to
- 39:45Virginia Tech. There you go.
- 39:48He's real active on Twitter so game, if you don't follow him
- 39:50yet, Yet, if you haven't had, he does and he has a lot of
- 39:53podcasts and things like that. Actually him in Mike have a
- 39:55podcast together. Yep.
- 39:56So if you haven't started following the white man, give
- 39:58him a follow when you get opportunities and great follow
- 40:02one thing I can say, do. The recruitment is hard.
- 40:06Yeah, it's a lot of work, but it, but it takes what you got.
- 40:14Do it, takes passion, you know what I'm saying?
- 40:15And I think that's what the coaches when I talk a lot about
- 40:19them, but I think that's what the coaches lacked that we had.
- 40:22So, it's great that we got prying the guys in Mars, which
- 40:25I've known mark for a long time. I my first cousin is a high
- 40:29school Coach and he's interacting with Marvel lot.
- 40:33When Marvels. Marvin to Vanderbilt and then he
- 40:36was at Florida State. So, my cousin and I acted with
- 40:39him a lot, man, and agencies passion, man, and being real
- 40:43with people being real with people man.
- 40:45So that's really what caught my eye.
- 40:48I'm saying they don't when I went it in this Pat me on the
- 40:51ass you know I'm saying it just you know they told me what I
- 40:54needed to work on and stuff like that so that's really what
- 40:57caught my attention to like the realness, you know that was like
- 41:00you're good at this but you like this, you know, some sand.
- 41:03So we've been working. Going on stuff like that, you
- 41:05know, and we've got to start his own calls during the week and
- 41:08stuff like that, so I can get to learn the defense and stuff like
- 41:10that. So it's like I'm already ready.
- 41:13So it's telling you about to get crazy.
- 41:18What, man, we appreciate your passion, we appreciate what
- 41:21you're doing for us and we look forward to watching you all.
- 41:23All your your singing you on to getting into Virginia Tech.
- 41:27So have a good night, man. We appreciate you.
- 41:30Thank y'all. Go Hokies.
- 41:34That was awesome. Well I love a good impromptu
- 41:38interview impromptu is heck I mean Shelton by the way Shelton
- 41:43we're going to now let you comment because Shelton has been
- 41:46completely off Twitter. So he him hearing us name.
- 41:51Everybody who's been committing is the first time he's heard it
- 41:54and just tell us what you think a gay man, because like he's a
- 41:58top ranked kid, you know, when you hear a kid come on like that
- 42:02and you In that. What's that tell you about it?
- 42:05Dude, it's great to see. I mean, from what I can tell
- 42:07already, he's just smart mature mature, young kid mature Beyond
- 42:13his years, and getting a guy that especially in the DMV.
- 42:17I think, I think Brian and I were talking earlier, texted me
- 42:20earlier about how important the DMV isn't trying to lock that
- 42:22area down because there's a lot of talent and that in that area.
- 42:26So that's it. That's a big-time pickup.
- 42:28Definitely. Shout out to shout outs.
- 42:31A lot of brought to me. Yeah, great Great pickup by my
- 42:35coach pry, great pickup definitely made a difference is
- 42:39you don't know, you know I know I know we had we talked about a
- 42:42little bit already but we're going to look back at some of
- 42:44these, this offseason moves and on the coaching staff and say we
- 42:48had a little bit of a addition by subtraction there.
- 42:51I thought, I feel like saying, great, great pickup by Brooks
- 42:54100%. We 45 in and we ain't got you
- 42:58two main topics. Get you get you get, you get
- 43:01your long gear on because we gonna be going away.
- 43:03While because that was awesome. I love having like you said,
- 43:06they're Shelton Kiss 16 year old, he very mature talking,
- 43:10very sure discussions about, you know, what, I loved what he
- 43:13said, right at the end there, Tyler for you for you, let him
- 43:16off. They know what I'm good at but
- 43:19they know what, I'm not gonna want me to be better at what?
- 43:22I'm not and they're telling me that now when you're actually
- 43:26trying to win me, not not, not once I'm on campus and they're
- 43:30trying to win games with me, they're telling me now when
- 43:32they're still trying to Get me to commit here.
- 43:35That I think that's big that speaks, you know, to what we
- 43:37talked about, when we had prion, a couple weeks back about the,
- 43:40the realness. I mean, he's, he's real tell
- 43:42he's gonna tell you what it is. I mean, he's, he might tell it
- 43:47to you in a way that, you know, that make you feel bad about it,
- 43:50but he's gonna be real with you gonna be real with you, all
- 43:53right? And I said it while he was
- 43:55talking with, and I went a little bit hardcore because I've
- 43:58said, 40 39, 38, I know you ain't 39 yet run.
- 44:01I ain't 40 yet. Tally.
- 44:03I know you ain't 838 quite yet, right shell, around it up.
- 44:06It's okay. Round it up.
- 44:08We've been talking about. How do we get return to power?
- 44:11How do we get to back to where we were?
- 44:13When we were young, you were a baby and we were in our 20s
- 44:16doing all sorts of crazy stuff. How do we get back there?
- 44:19And we were going to start off tonight.
- 44:21We're going to talk about conference realignment because
- 44:23it's been a Hot Topic and it is something when you're returning
- 44:25to power, it's got to be looked at.
- 44:27And I want to start first when it came out just a couple weeks
- 44:30ago back to Magnificent Seven. It's Clem.
- 44:34FSU Miami U NC NC State and UVA all kind of getting together
- 44:37chatting about each other, Brian.
- 44:40What did that tell you? When that popped out that there
- 44:42was they, a group of teams effectively, kind of chat about
- 44:46each other? Like, you know, how long can we
- 44:48actually deal with this shit? I mean, I think it speaks to the
- 44:52unrest with the current payouts that the ACCC has for their
- 44:59bigger programs, especially the programs that are drawing eyes.
- 45:03To the television, right? So these are programs that Have
- 45:09enough Cloud even in Bad seasons, that they're going to
- 45:12put up good ratings. Consistently even against, you
- 45:15know, bad opponents even when the team itself is like us last
- 45:20year a 3 and 18 and you know you look at Virginia Tech, obviously
- 45:25you got Clemson. We know how good they've been
- 45:31you know you look at at FSU, they're back on the rise, they
- 45:34have such a consistent fan base, you know, Miami.
- 45:39Through. They are, you got you NC NC
- 45:42State, very passionate fan base, very much land, grant University
- 45:47just like Virginia Tech. So I mean NC State's probably as
- 45:50close to a sister School in the ACC as we can get.
- 45:54And then you got UVA, which is more of the truly Olympic sport
- 46:00dominance. I mean, so when you kind of look
- 46:03at all those together, I mean it makes sense.
- 46:04That that is kind of the group that was looking to make some
- 46:08moves. If I understand the, I can
- 46:12understand their frustration with the current state of the
- 46:14media payout, right? It's when you compare it to like
- 46:19universities in the Big Ten and the SEC, it's just ridiculous.
- 46:23It is ridicu, Sheldon, tell anything to add on top of that,
- 46:26there are many motherfuckers, just tired of playing on the
- 46:28cooking network at 11:00 and I don't matter.
- 46:32If we only won three games, you know what I'm saying, we'll put
- 46:35up a graphic later on, it's other teams has been winning
- 46:38three games and they playing at at times and playing on, you
- 46:42know, Plan on networks, this much better than some of the
- 46:46stuff that we've had to do and you got to find a stream and
- 46:49stuff. Like, when you have a fan base,
- 46:51just as passionate as I was like, you got to give them a
- 46:54product, you know what I mean? As far as on the field but also
- 46:58even we just missed the ball on a lot of stuff lately.
- 47:01So yeah. What Brian is saying like the
- 47:08The schools that have been The Magnificent Seven, looking to
- 47:11make a move. I definitely understand why can
- 47:14you get anything on this? Yeah, I mean, nothing like super
- 47:18insightful. I just think it's kind of crazy
- 47:20that like, over the next ten or so, years, whenever the contract
- 47:23expire, Vanderbilt's gonna be making forty million dollars a
- 47:27year more than Eva Tsui and Clemson.
- 47:29So I don't know, right to what degree to what degree can never
- 47:32assume Clemson actually tolerate that I don't know, but they're
- 47:35not to lower their ass out of that Geor is, it's Damned.
- 47:38That's bleep and I'm gonna definitely ask that.
- 47:40The only reason that the one thing that I will say about
- 47:43these seven schools about this happening, is people can say, oh
- 47:47no, there's been no contact, there's been no communication
- 47:49between bullshit. If they're coming up and they're
- 47:53talking to each other, there has been communication from other
- 47:55conferences. I would bet my ass on that
- 47:59because there ain't no need to talk about it.
- 48:00Unless there's potentially some where to go now.
- 48:04I'm going to flip to you on this Shelton.
- 48:07Is it just basically covering a gunshot wound with a Band-Aid
- 48:11with the acc's? You pay structure trying to pay
- 48:14the better? You do the more you get?
- 48:16Yeah, from the research. I've seen it's a very, very
- 48:19small impact. Like, I don't know what the
- 48:20exact numbers are, but that's, that's like chump change.
- 48:23It's not going to change much like you have to change the
- 48:25actual structure of the television contract.
- 48:28Yeah, I'm with you on that. Y'all boys.
- 48:30Got anything on that? I mean, great.
- 48:31You get I get all of my bowl money.
- 48:34Great! Wonderful birthday.
- 48:37Don't add 18 million Bond. And here's the thing though, and
- 48:50eventually this is probably what could kill the ACC.
- 48:54It can't be broken right now. Although there are MERS about a
- 48:58part of it, they could be broken in a couple years.
- 49:01Somebody's got to show the new Grand race for that can be seen,
- 49:05but it only takes 8 to dissolve the league.
- 49:07It only takes eight. There's clearly seven that a
- 49:11happy about where they are. You found an eight that has a
- 49:14partner with a lot more money. They can bring him to that
- 49:16program. Do y'all think that will happen
- 49:20before we see anything? Do you think the grant of rights
- 49:22be dissolved? Whoever wants to lead this?
- 49:27Sally, I'll let you roll first on this one.
- 49:30I don't know. I don't know.
- 49:31Shit. I was waiting to see what you
- 49:32had to say. I'm just, I'm kind of surprised.
- 49:35I'm kind of surprised, kid move outward in there.
- 49:38At least one of them. Yeah, I can see, Louisville more
- 49:41than Pit to be honest. Because I feel like they have
- 49:45some of the more elements that are both attractive to the Big
- 49:48Ten and to the SEC in terms of you know, probably the Big Ten a
- 49:55little bit more because they're getting an additional Market
- 49:57that they don't have right now. Yeah, although Penn State's got
- 50:01a big hole in Pennsylvania. So I think what's going on.
- 50:05This is my opinion, my opinion on.
- 50:07I think the 18 going to go to the big 12 and I think what
- 50:10they're going to look at. It's like Louisville to pit.
- 50:13Good good. Good call on those two Sheldon
- 50:16for the Big 12. It's well, it's a different
- 50:18Market. We pick up someone closer, you
- 50:21kind of have that Cincinnati West Virginia.
- 50:23You've got that little Rust Belt feel to it and they're going to
- 50:27look back and say, okay, we can't get Here and here because
- 50:30whatever but can we is it okay to make 15 or 20 million more
- 50:36year? Not 30 to 45 million more year?
- 50:39And I've been really think that's what's going to happen.
- 50:41There's going to be someone in there that just says, you know
- 50:43what, fuck this goddamn 30 million dollars a year.
- 50:47The Big 12 can give us 55. I wish we could get 85.
- 50:50But you know what? We want to stay relevant.
- 50:53We got to do that. That's my opinion.
- 50:58And I think that's a visually. What's going to kill the ACC
- 51:00unless they can renew renegotiate, the contract?
- 51:03Because the honest truth is and I'll say this dead pain.
- 51:07Should the ACC be making as much money as the SEC of the Big Ten
- 51:10though? They don't pull the ratings.
- 51:12Should they be making as much less that they are right now?
- 51:15No, I think it's closer than people think, but that is what
- 51:18it is. Well, at least he's at least
- 51:20these to be higher than what the big clubs making right now,
- 51:23which is it's not it's not That's the bullshit part of it.
- 51:27And it's not even going to be once, you know, Texas and
- 51:29Oklahoma, take a fucking hike. So they took a dip.
- 51:33It took a dip. Yeah, they basically
- 51:35renegotiated at basically, but it's still going to be a movie
- 51:39ACC even at the radiation level. I almost start with you on this
- 51:44show. What's your preference?
- 51:47The Big Ten or the SEC, definitely a sec, okay?
- 51:52I would rather, I would rather lose to LG by 40, just That was
- 51:55you by 40 football game. I don't care.
- 52:00I don't know. No, thank you.
- 52:26No, thank you with everything you need.
- 52:27You just say it was good for you, man, for me.
- 52:31Because if we go to the SEC I live in the middle of a sec
- 52:34country, I don't want to get fucked up by Alabama Auburn,
- 52:37text it Tennessee, every week. No, I'm good on that, but I do
- 52:44understand what you're saying. I'm just saying, we can get more
- 52:48money. We got two options, we can get
- 52:50more money with both options. I'd like to take the little bit
- 52:54of power. If of least resistance, I want
- 52:57to win a little bit more games like I'm 37, man.
- 53:00I'm not trying to get beat by 40.
- 53:02You younger than me, shit, I want to win.
- 53:10Now that's just me. I can understand what shall we
- 53:17get? Yeah, I mean I'm kind of with
- 53:21Talia a little bit. I think the Big Ten is a Good
- 53:25fit probably from an entire athletic department standpoint.
- 53:30You know when you think about wrestling and things like that,
- 53:33I think if you're just looking at the football side of it, the
- 53:35SEC is a better fit but at the same time when I when I compare
- 53:41the two travel overall is going to be about the same.
- 53:44So that's to me, not not much of a factor, you know, some people
- 53:48are we'll talk. Whether that's may be affecting
- 53:50three games a year. I mean, it's cold as shit in
- 53:53Blacksburg and in October late, October, and early November
- 53:57anyway, so that's not, that's not a big deal to me.
- 54:00So it really comes down to if we go to the Big 10, you know, if
- 54:04we take some steps we could potentially be.
- 54:08You know that fifth or sixth maybe seventh best program in
- 54:12the conference at some point in the near future I don't know we
- 54:16quit. I don't know if we in the near
- 54:18future. Are the sixth or seventh best
- 54:21team in the Sec in the next two to three years.
- 54:26If you're looking to be competitive in the, in the
- 54:28conference and also still reaping, the financial benefits,
- 54:33the Big Ten is the answer. NC as cool as Shelton.
- 54:39You you made it. You made it like seeing LSU
- 54:44Planet Alabama, having them come see, that's the funny part.
- 54:48We're old 20 years ago, we saw LSU and Texas A&M, come on shit
- 54:55but it's more of what this I don't know who this is.
- 54:58I wish they had their names because effectively I think with
- 55:01the Big Ten if to me I'm looking at it as a as a whole Whole,
- 55:06Wisconsin and Iowa. They always do what they do out
- 55:09in the west Nebraska has to prove.
- 55:10He can get back. There's three main ones and I
- 55:15look in the whole realm of it and it's like if tech gets back
- 55:19where it was just a decade ago, just at the end of the 2000s or
- 55:24the late 2000s and early 2010's, it can be the fourth or third
- 55:29best in that conference. Yeah.
- 55:31And and then also, it's the travel piece of you.
- 55:36Maryland Rutgers Ohio State Indiana there five, six hour
- 55:40drives, Brian you made the point.
- 55:42It's not an overall, it's not going to be anything, but I feel
- 55:45like the big Ten's a better fit, I also.
- 55:48And this is the way I feel. I think the Big Ten Wolf's that
- 55:51DC Northern Virginia Market. I think they feel, if they look
- 55:55at us, they're saying we're not only getting that market.
- 55:57We're going to get the Charlotte Market to.
- 55:59We're going to get this big Market where they can pull two
- 56:02to two and a half, three and a half, four, and a half million
- 56:04on a normal game day. Day for TV and that's where it
- 56:07goes and they might get some of that Triad to.
- 56:10That's true tried. All right last piece I'll let
- 56:14y'all go just real quick and I'll name mine first.
- 56:17I think yes we can return to power outside of the Big Tooth
- 56:21because I think the way it's going to be set up.
- 56:23Is there still going to give crumbs to lower tier
- 56:27conferences? What about y'all?
- 56:32I think there's a chance because I think with the, with the
- 56:34college football, playoff coming in, there's still going to be
- 56:36some room for people to eat. So if you're, if you're the big
- 56:40dog at the, you know, whatever the number three is just below
- 56:46the big to your in at least be in the conversation.
- 56:49People are going to be talking about you so there's still some
- 56:51potential there. It will be kind of a big East
- 56:56type situation where you won't get respected until you go out
- 56:58there and kick somebody in the teeth, right?
- 57:02But I think you can still get there.
- 57:04Yeah, take it. Back my heart.
- 57:06You have some say, piggyback on kind of what Brian saying it's
- 57:11going to be harder. But I think there's opportunity
- 57:13and again, you just can't, what would you take?
- 57:16Has as far as the fan base and the venue is just if you need to
- 57:21its own. So it's going to keep attracting
- 57:25people, no matter what, no matter what conference so,
- 57:29Opportunity. But a lot Slimmer.
- 57:33Yep. Significantly lower margin for
- 57:37error. You're essentially talking
- 57:39about, you got to be undefeated or one loss.
- 57:42If you want to be relevant it looks like the big to you're
- 57:46looking like Cincinnati now. Yeah you know, a school like
- 57:50that perfect way to say. Alright let's do the next and
- 57:53it's got to be done. It's got to be talked about the
- 57:55school administration because there's a, I think text out of
- 58:001.8 billion dollar endowment. Clearly we saw from that
- 58:04graphic. Just the other Eat the athletic
- 58:06department is an absolutely no debt while they were able to
- 58:09make that decision to effectively, take what 5.9
- 58:12million, in build, a new locker room because you ain't got no
- 58:17dead, it's easy to ask for money.
- 58:20What? Babcock?
- 58:20As we all know, as a Flashpoint discussion, when you talk to any
- 58:24hokey fans, there are people that love with there.
- 58:26Are people that absolutely hate with, but can he be the ad to
- 58:31leave? This?
- 58:31She also near an alumni. So I'm gonna ask you this one
- 58:33first. Can he lead?
- 58:35Read this back to where we want to be.
- 58:37I think you can. Yes, what happened?
- 58:41Tpd obviously. There's there's a lot of I think
- 58:45politics that goes on inside of school administrations at like
- 58:48administration's. Like it's really really complex.
- 58:50I think a lot more so than a lot of people on the outside kind of
- 58:53want to admit. I think what's done a really
- 58:56good job of obviously building up our Olympic sports programs.
- 59:00Be kind of see that with the number of new sports to success
- 59:02there with football. I Think It's tricky because
- 59:06honestly, you know, inherited situation where we had some debt
- 59:10from from the Weaver era and it took us a while to kind of build
- 59:13up, you know. The fundraising and all that
- 59:16stuff with like support staff and coaching centers and
- 59:19Facilities like all that stuff takes time.
- 59:21Like I said, I think there's there's a lot of factors that go
- 59:24into it. There's a lot of people that
- 59:25have to make decisions about that kind of stuff.
- 59:27It's not just wit obviously to Falls with him as a maybe but I
- 59:31think Tech is in a much better spot resources Lies when it
- 59:34comes to those three things that I mentioned.
- 59:36There's trying to put more money into the program and right now I
- 59:40think it's just a matter of Coach probably being able to get
- 59:43a job done. Like I just Think, for me, I
- 59:45just think the coaches have to win games, like it's that
- 59:47simple. I mean, we're not, you know,
- 59:49this isn't like that 2012 where we're falling behind, like we've
- 59:53got the money, we've got the money, be a top buddy program.
- 59:55I think I just think we need the coaches to kind of step up and
- 59:58do the jobs Kylie, will you think I agree?
- 1:00:02I agree with Shelton saying there, you know, even when he'd
- 1:00:07I do think it needs to be a little bit more of a focus on
- 1:00:10football. Because football is your money
- 1:00:11maker from Our perspective from somebody who is holding the
- 1:00:21money who's making the decisions is like, well, best girls, you
- 1:00:24know, when his basketball is doing this, or baseball is going
- 1:00:27here, football steal the money maker but you got to promote
- 1:00:30that because that's what's winning at the time.
- 1:00:33But as much as everybody jumped on with last year, or in the
- 1:00:37past years, and say we should be playing here, we should be
- 1:00:40playing here. Well, if we went in, did with
- 1:00:42the fuck, we were supposed to do and beat the shit.
- 1:00:44Out of ODU. I'll beat the shit out of
- 1:00:46Liberty. Nobody cares that we go to and
- 1:00:48play. It's just, we didn't get the job
- 1:00:51done. You know, the players didn't do
- 1:00:53it in the coaches, didn't do it. So if we do play ODU, or we do
- 1:00:58play Liberty or whoever the fuck we play, whose line up in front
- 1:01:02of us. If we go in there and their
- 1:01:03coaches, do that job, like, Sheldon saying, I don't think
- 1:01:06that we here witch named as much, you know, like for
- 1:01:10scheduling those games, like we can, we should be winning them.
- 1:01:14Even at ODU last year, that wasn't with fault that we lost.
- 1:01:19We may have shouldn't have went there, whatever, but it wasn't
- 1:01:22his fault that we lost and you don't, we made mistakes and we
- 1:01:25lost the game, you know, if we go down there and we drum them
- 1:01:28like we supposed to then everybody's happy and we on to
- 1:01:31the next week. So I think that we can be in
- 1:01:36this position and we can and we can start that start that run
- 1:01:39back up. Gabe Williams already showed us
- 1:01:42that. Yeah and I mean look at that.
- 1:01:44I mean, you know, Whit was kind of dealt a less-than-ideal hand
- 1:01:50from the end of the, the Weaver are, right?
- 1:01:53So you know, I know I get the focus on building back the, you
- 1:01:59know, some of the Olympics for it's in the non residue because
- 1:02:01those were heavily neglected. The entire depart was to
- 1:02:06collected across the board towards the end there, but
- 1:02:09particularly those kind of letter left flailing by the
- 1:02:12wayside there. You know, he's gotten those back
- 1:02:16to a point where you feel like there's stability consistently
- 1:02:19competing and then we started to see some of the money kind of
- 1:02:23come back in but you know, we look back it's part of that is
- 1:02:26the laissez-faire Mom and Pop Style managing that we saw
- 1:02:30towards the end of the Weaver are and we were just being her
- 1:02:33was taken care of business. And there wasn't a whole lot of
- 1:02:36money put in there, so, I feel like that, that played a big
- 1:02:40factor in how it kind of prioritize football less out the
- 1:02:43gate. And probably put him, you know,
- 1:02:47in the in the target of a lot of a lot of hokey football fans
- 1:02:51because I mean football is the Bell cow man football pays the
- 1:02:53bills so hopefully, you know, because of that, hopefully we
- 1:02:58don't end up losing some of the overall Revenue.
- 1:03:02The the kind of raising all boats there because we let
- 1:03:07football kind of flounder there for a little bit, but at that
- 1:03:09definitely think wit can turn it around.
- 1:03:11We got some good investment coming in now between the locker
- 1:03:14room. You know, some of the, the big
- 1:03:16initiatives on some of the facilities that we're doing and
- 1:03:21things like that. So in the, in the bigger
- 1:03:23emphasis on building the staff, so like those, their salary pool
- 1:03:27for the coaches, as big for me, especially when we look at the
- 1:03:30off-field roles as well. So if we can keep moving in that
- 1:03:35direction, I feel pretty good. I'm with all y'all on this.
- 1:03:39I think he can be the man to lead the way, just the way he
- 1:03:41built up the other parts of the program and then what he did
- 1:03:45effectively in 2018 because he was building it up, he was
- 1:03:49dumping money elsewhere. And when that season went down
- 1:03:52the shitter, he pivoted hard and sort of dumping money back in
- 1:03:57the football because he knew effectively, it wasn't like, it
- 1:04:01was with Frank. We weren't just going to keep
- 1:04:03going. It was like that too.
- 1:04:04Few first few years but he pivoted, Hardy got those new
- 1:04:08dorms built talking, remember that happening at the new dorms
- 1:04:12built, made some upgrades facility.
- 1:04:14So I think he saw it and now he's clearly dumping even more
- 1:04:17money into the football program. I'm going to be real cool with
- 1:04:24this one. Is wits hands tied by Tim
- 1:04:29sayings. Because Tam's is on record and
- 1:04:31saying, effectively, he does not believe in the football arms
- 1:04:34race. That's on record, that's not me.
- 1:04:37Just making it pulling something out of my ass.
- 1:04:40He said that and now he sits in a conference, this making 40
- 1:04:44million a year, when their other conferences, making 100 million
- 1:04:47a year. Do y'all think Sands ties his
- 1:04:50hands? Sheldon kind of hit on that
- 1:04:54earlier. So Sean, I actually think his
- 1:04:58hands are tied by other people in the ID personally.
- 1:05:02Well yeah I'm not going to I'm not going to so you know, I'm
- 1:05:13not going to comment on that but I do think way to sort of like a
- 1:05:16punching bag for fans who are just mad and one of them to
- 1:05:18about the state of the program. He's a good idea obviously.
- 1:05:22Like like Curtis mention, you know, his intelligence is not
- 1:05:25the issue like he's done a great job, putting up the revenues for
- 1:05:28the number of Miss Cortez. We talked about, I just think
- 1:05:31it's a matter of getting, you know, getting this staff to
- 1:05:33support they need and just, you know, having enough time to kind
- 1:05:36of wait it out. But yeah, as far as Sands goes
- 1:05:38like there's probably a certain people that also play a factor
- 1:05:43in that, that type of stuff. So that's kind of my that's come
- 1:05:46up in the news is another thing too.
- 1:05:48I may just kind of the same point but a little bit
- 1:05:51different. What is your Virginia Tech fans
- 1:05:54talk about? Excuse me.
- 1:05:56I was a genie tech fans talking about.
- 1:05:59Oh, he's a, he's a nice. A, a snake said, snake oil
- 1:06:02salesman. Well, he's a used car salesman,
- 1:06:04the, some talking about different coaches.
- 1:06:06Well, fuck it. You got to be some kind of
- 1:06:08salesman, and we Punnett six years with a coach who was just
- 1:06:13like, hey, this is what it is, you know, until it came to the
- 1:06:16end. And he says, I need help.
- 1:06:18I need this. I need that.
- 1:06:20You got to have a coach that can stand In front of not, just
- 1:06:24with, but stand in front of the athletic department and say, for
- 1:06:27us to be successful, this is what we gotta do.
- 1:06:31So he's got to be a Salesman to do that and I think prize been
- 1:06:34doing that, the weighted he came in and the way to he, he hit the
- 1:06:37ground running. I know.
- 1:06:38It seems like it's been years and years ago, but when he
- 1:06:41arrived him, going to all the different events and shaking
- 1:06:45hands and kissing babies and sitting at groundwork, you got
- 1:06:49to be able to do that to show the athletic department, where
- 1:06:52You're trying to get to, as a football department.
- 1:06:55So 100%, I this is a simple. Yes, or no question.
- 1:07:00Can this Administration Sands everybody in the athletic
- 1:07:04department with included? Can they fast-track enough
- 1:07:08resources in the next five years?
- 1:07:09So say 2029 to get us ahead or level with most tier 2 non
- 1:07:16Blueblood programs Ryan. I mean I think we're on the
- 1:07:21right track for that already, right?
- 1:07:22So, you know, we already moved up into kind of the top two or
- 1:07:26three, four, sometimes, five, depending on the year, in terms
- 1:07:30of what we're paying coaches, we're starting to move that way
- 1:07:34into what we potentially could pay recruiting staff.
- 1:07:38So we're not going to be Clemson right out the gate.
- 1:07:40We're probably not going to be Florida state anytime soon, but
- 1:07:43I think we can definitely be a tour ahead of everybody else in
- 1:07:48our conference, right? Now on that front so I
- 1:07:51definitely think that's doable, okay.
- 1:07:54Now if you're talking about if we're in the SEC in three to
- 1:07:59four years, that's when it gets a little more questionable, but
- 1:08:03I think we've got a decent enough Foundation.
- 1:08:06Where we're not going to be behind, I just don't know
- 1:08:09whether we're catching up to those.
- 1:08:10Tier two programs, if that's the path we end up going down.
- 1:08:17Yeah, I've personally I just I don't think money is that big of
- 1:08:19it? I mean it's money met but you
- 1:08:22reason that we're not like a top 10 or top plate program, but I
- 1:08:24don't think it's a reason why we can't be, you know, talk 30,
- 1:08:26like we've got the resources, our facilities are good, you
- 1:08:29know, the support staff, they've got all this position.
- 1:08:31So it's like we've got the, we've got, the resources were
- 1:08:34investing now. It's just a matter of time
- 1:08:35before it pays off coaches. I think it comes down to the
- 1:08:39coach. I've been, it comes down to the
- 1:08:42product. And, like I said, you got a
- 1:08:44headache coaches, leading the program yet, Experiment believe.
- 1:08:48So, even when you do go three and eight, you still got people
- 1:08:51to say, hey, we're going to follow this guy.
- 1:08:53So right now, I think we're in the right direction.
- 1:08:56Prior to going to be watching us, man, I need your help this
- 1:09:00year, go fuck some people up, there you go.
- 1:09:05I so obviously the next big elephant in the room and it's
- 1:09:09always in the room because it seems like if I talkin about
- 1:09:12including Dion, just the other day is in il and What do y'all
- 1:09:17think about the football donation strategy, prioritizing
- 1:09:21ni L donations over donations to the Hokie Club, over donations,
- 1:09:25to the scholarship fund? Does it have to be a
- 1:09:28prioritization? I mean, we're not in debt.
- 1:09:32I didn't do it. I mean, and IL has to be a focus
- 1:09:36whether it's the focus or not is I guess the big question, right?
- 1:09:41If you're not if you don't have a significant in il presence,
- 1:09:46you're going to be falling behind on the recruiting trail
- 1:09:51and I think not so much with getting guys.
- 1:09:53Like I think, I mean it's dumb. Some of the stuff I've seen some
- 1:09:57like tier two, tier two tier three programs do to get like a
- 1:10:01mid three. To give program that shit's dumb
- 1:10:05but where we need to be good at is if we've got a four star that
- 1:10:11is ready to commit, but we're not quite where they need to be.
- 1:10:14We got to be able to push that over the top and make it close
- 1:10:17that deal. If we've got a star player on
- 1:10:21our team that getting some Nibbles from bigger programs,
- 1:10:26we've got to be able to push that a little bit hired to
- 1:10:30incentivize that player to stay. In Blacksburg, that's where it's
- 1:10:34going to be the big winds from an ni o perspective.
- 1:10:37So I don't think it needs to overtake the Hokie Club in terms
- 1:10:41of priority, but I definitely think it needs to be a tiered
- 1:10:44approach in how we're funding the program going forward.
- 1:10:49I agree. I agree.
- 1:10:50Because, again, mind that use not the main thing, but one of
- 1:10:53the things you hit, all right then and like coach process, it
- 1:10:58Shameless plug. If you haven't seen it, go back
- 1:11:01and watch it. Cold for our.
- 1:11:03See it, you got coaches, talking to you players during the
- 1:11:07season, pretty much did, you know, you got coaches, trying to
- 1:11:10poacher poacher players all the time.
- 1:11:13So nrel has to be somewhere in there to be like, hey, we can
- 1:11:18take care of you here. Here we go.
- 1:11:20We got you, you know, you've already proved yourself here.
- 1:11:24Let us let us, you know, do what we do and let you continue to
- 1:11:30grow here. So And I are definitely has to
- 1:11:33be a focus because of things like that.
- 1:11:35Not the focus, but a focus. And I mean the other thought
- 1:11:41about it too. Is y'all think we're like the
- 1:11:44Deon interview yesterday about it?
- 1:11:50Was there's only to me. He was trying to say, only
- 1:11:52Elite. Guys should get in il.
- 1:11:54These collectives are the problems and it's like so a guy
- 1:11:57killing himself. Shouldn't get any money for
- 1:12:01playing college football Dion. I hated that, I hated him saying
- 1:12:04that if you all doing here you go.
- 1:12:05Looks like my son could get a million dollar deal.
- 1:12:08It's like so the kid over here shouldn't get twenty thousand
- 1:12:12dollars for planted. I agree with him from a high
- 1:12:15school recruit standpoint but the other but despite the
- 1:12:19player, Your retention, if you got a kid, that's developing
- 1:12:23well, and doing all the right stuff, you should be able to put
- 1:12:26some stuff on that player. Whether he's getting Nibbles
- 1:12:31from outside of the program or not.
- 1:12:34So the and that's why it's a question is, there's our
- 1:12:36strategy, right? I mean, all I'll say is this, I
- 1:12:40think our strategy is working good.
- 1:12:42Did Mansoor go anywhere after being clearly, clearly hit up by
- 1:12:46a bunch of people, probably with a nice bunch of money in his
- 1:12:49pocket for his pockets. I mean are you still okay?
- 1:12:55So you sit here, if we did it, if we're doing it right or doing
- 1:12:57it wrong, I think the collectives and all are doing
- 1:13:01it, right? They're finding ways to get it
- 1:13:04done, you know? And and that's the pieces like
- 1:13:11is it right when guys like that? Don't leave and you clearly see
- 1:13:16you know, and I know he's not involved yet likely with it.
- 1:13:19But guys like Gabe, come on clearly the Visions laid out
- 1:13:22there within IL and In as far as leveling up at the ni o, do we
- 1:13:29need to? I mean yeah, everybody needs to
- 1:13:32write in some way but because this is it's always going to be
- 1:13:36changing. It is they're gonna come in,
- 1:13:38they're gonna put some restrictions in it or they're
- 1:13:40gonna come in and they're going to say this and they're going to
- 1:13:42do that. So you're always going to have
- 1:13:43some stuff going, that's a little bit different.
- 1:13:45I'm excited that we are just having a part in it now, because
- 1:13:52down here, while I'm at it, it's been happening.
- 1:13:53Like yeah, fuck. And I ll it was just like do
- 1:13:57your mama need a house? Or you need a car, here you go,
- 1:14:00you know what I'm saying? So to have something that just
- 1:14:03at least puts us you do in the same ballpark with some of those
- 1:14:07schools helps 100% All right, let's flip it over because it's
- 1:14:14we've been leveling. We got to get to recruiting and
- 1:14:17I'm going to put just want to tally because Shelton, Brian
- 1:14:21myself. I think I bias might show
- 1:14:23through on this one. I felt tallied in and outside
- 1:14:26guy being from Alabama, might be a little bit more.
- 1:14:29So tally, what's more important getting the best players we can
- 1:14:33in our 6:00 hour radius or recruiting the state of
- 1:14:37Virginia, better than any other team, Penn State UNC Carolyn NC
- 1:14:42State. Clemson etc, etc. so tough
- 1:14:46question, and it's kind of hard to answer because you gotta You
- 1:14:51got to kind of do both. You know I'm saying?
- 1:14:53Like you really don't have a choice but to do both, it's like
- 1:14:55that six hour radius. 6 hours is not impossible to drive to go to
- 1:15:01a football game, therefore, a family.
- 1:15:04You know what I'm saying? The state of Virginia, or people
- 1:15:09close to Virginia, Tech 4 hours away, three hours away.
- 1:15:13We'll go watch. Somebody play that is from their
- 1:15:18school, you know? So that goes, A long two.
- 1:15:22Hotel rooms being rented, that goes along with the city of
- 1:15:26Blacksburg making money because people going to restaurants,
- 1:15:29that goes along to selling out the stadium, having a better
- 1:15:32crowd for TV selling more concessions, while you're there
- 1:15:37then just recruiting people to recruit them and then their
- 1:15:41families can't come, watch them. You don't have nobody to watch
- 1:15:43him play. So recruiting the best in the
- 1:15:47state is good or getting the best players from the stadium.
- 1:15:52Or between instead of Virginia is good, but you can't neglect.
- 1:15:57Like we talking about Gabe Williams.
- 1:15:58You can't neglect a player, like gave Williams.
- 1:16:01That is the spearhead right now of this 2024 class.
- 1:16:07And I do think we get some guys from Virginia.
- 1:16:10I do think we get, you know, maybe 12.
- 1:16:15I don't know, top guys from Virginia.
- 1:16:17When I say top maybe top 10 guys from Virginia this year but
- 1:16:21they're not There yet. So if you're sitting around
- 1:16:24waiting on that top 10 guy to start your class off and they've
- 1:16:29been holding off and holding off shit, you miss a big weekend
- 1:16:35like you just did, you know. So you're right.
- 1:16:39I guess my answer would be, you know, that six our radius is, is
- 1:16:42probably the best route to go just because it's so much talent
- 1:16:47around that area, that we'd be missing if we didn't. but we're
- 1:16:52not neglecting Virginia either, which is what the problem was,
- 1:16:57before what we was doing, I'm doing Show me what you think.
- 1:17:05Yeah, like guitar for me, I want to talk a lot about, you know,
- 1:17:11locking down the state of Virginia.
- 1:17:12I think it's more helpful to look at, in terms of just like
- 1:17:15taking Blacksburg and drawing a giant circle around it.
- 1:17:18So that's where you keep hurting.
- 1:17:19So, North Carolina DMV Tennessee excetera.
- 1:17:23Personally, I know some people might disagree this.
- 1:17:25I'm not super gung-ho on the town level right now.
- 1:17:27In the state of Virginia, the last two years it is it's been
- 1:17:30pretty rough in terms of NFL draft picks getting.
- 1:17:32After from the state now that might change going forward.
- 1:17:35It could just be a little blip but to me you look at over the
- 1:17:39past, you know, six or seven years like most of text players,
- 1:17:41the best players are from North Carolina and an ogre killed
- 1:17:45Farley Divine Diablo. Exile the field living, you can
- 1:17:48name a bunch of them like tree the talent.
- 1:17:50Yeah. Trey Turner thanks for the tip
- 1:17:53there. It's like that's where the
- 1:17:55talent is. I mean, like I didn't know this
- 1:17:57until recently but the state of Virginia is actually losing
- 1:17:59population and North Carolina's growing in population.
- 1:18:02And so to me, like when we're talking about what the
- 1:18:04recruiting base is, you got them to North Carolina, because
- 1:18:08that's where that's where our best players have come from for
- 1:18:11the most part. Yeah, I'm with you.
- 1:18:15In some of this goes back to what Pratt talks about with
- 1:18:19relationships, right? So when we talk about a kid,
- 1:18:21like Gabe Williams just came on. He talk, what did he say?
- 1:18:25Relationship with Elijah Brooks. Yep, is a big key in why?
- 1:18:31He gave Virginia Tech a look. So you can't ignore those
- 1:18:34relationships regardless of whether they're those high
- 1:18:37schools that you're spending a significant amount of time in by
- 1:18:41recruiting the state, or Whether it's the relationships that
- 1:18:44you've developed in your recruiting footprint or from
- 1:18:47previous stops, you've got it, you can't turn away a connection
- 1:18:52again as tally said the problem before, wasn't that, you know,
- 1:18:57the staff lean into some of their, you know, lower Midwest
- 1:19:02Roots. There.
- 1:19:03It was that they completely ignored the state of Virginia in
- 1:19:06the process. Yeah.
- 1:19:08Right so I definitely think the six hour radius is More
- 1:19:14important from a macro version verse perspective.
- 1:19:17But you know, you still need to be in the Virginia High School's
- 1:19:22every year because you want to be there when a kid is good and
- 1:19:27he wants to play for Virginia Tech 100%, you don't want to be
- 1:19:30the guy coming in last. Are you going to be the school
- 1:19:33that is late to the party on a kid that ends up being good at a
- 1:19:38school that you decided to ignore for two or three Cycles?
- 1:19:41Exactly. In in like it's like we're all
- 1:19:46here. It's like Virginia is important
- 1:19:48because likely two out of every five players are going to be
- 1:19:50purged in from Virginia. Let's just be realistic.
- 1:19:53We look at an 85 scholarship, probably 30 of them are.
- 1:19:55So we're going to be from Virginia, if not a little bit
- 1:19:58more, but I sit here and I look at that radius, we draw that
- 1:20:01Circle. And I think there's four states
- 1:20:06that are going to be critical. I think Virginia still is
- 1:20:08critical. I think finding stars and find
- 1:20:11developmental players, which shows going to get to in a
- 1:20:13little while here, from the state of Virginia, is going to
- 1:20:15be super critical. But the states of Florida,
- 1:20:19Georgia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Those four states are going to
- 1:20:25be a to me if we get back we're going to see it.
- 1:20:29And I'm not knocking Maryland, but Maryland's, right next door.
- 1:20:33Don't have to for drivers for to get to Maryland.
- 1:20:36Please don't and you're not talking in North Carolina as
- 1:20:39well, which is also at the two states.
- 1:20:41Closest to us, that tally has made a point four hour drive
- 1:20:45three-hour drive for those guys. It's, those ones that are a
- 1:20:48little bit further, there are just in there just in the six
- 1:20:52hours or their little bit outside that six hour range.
- 1:20:55And I think for the program it's getting several pop 30 top, 25
- 1:21:00players to commit to Tech. Getting the inroads in those
- 1:21:05schools and it may be five years.
- 1:21:07We're looking at it and saying it's not top 30 anymore, we're
- 1:21:10going to get to top 15 players from the state of Georgia.
- 1:21:13This year, we're going to get you top 15 players from the
- 1:21:16state of Ohio this year. And it's that growth of those
- 1:21:19schools where it's still six hours, somebody on the northern
- 1:21:23part of Georgia can give me a car on Friday afternoon, drive
- 1:21:27up to Blacksburg. Go see their son play.
- 1:21:30Get out on Sunday, drive back. It's a full.
- 1:21:33Yeah, but it's nothing that can't be done and I think that's
- 1:21:36going to be the big important part.
- 1:21:38Now, the other thing I'll say is the transfer portal ain't going
- 1:21:41away. Yeah.
- 1:21:46Tennessee as well but Tennessee's wanted to touch his
- 1:21:48us, tell you drove up from your home's, an hour and a half.
- 1:21:53We took about six hours to get to Bristol.
- 1:21:56You know how old half. So, it's only about five hours,
- 1:21:58right? Yeah, five hours for to about
- 1:22:01five hours to get the Bristol. I believe.
- 1:22:04Yeah. Now so that again they in
- 1:22:08Chattanooga can drive up, we can see the sun go back home without
- 1:22:12much of a thing. But the thing that Coach Price
- 1:22:15said was talking about the he was talking about Transfer
- 1:22:21portal and he said it straight up to us.
- 1:22:23It's need and fit. If you need an older guy in a
- 1:22:26room to discuss it, right? You got to go on those to me
- 1:22:31that's someone like pow because at the defensive end room
- 1:22:35defensive end room wise. He's already played a Glide in
- 1:22:38the SEC right. He's already probably got just
- 1:22:42as much experience as Nelson and McRae.
- 1:22:44Does he seem better? Tackles than probably anybody on
- 1:22:48our defensively. Exactly.
- 1:22:50And that's nice. Fit and then he talked about it
- 1:22:52the other way. And I love him saying this when
- 1:22:55we miss on a guy, if we don't hit on a guy, we think we're
- 1:22:57going to develop this guy. I love hearing him say that
- 1:23:01because he's basically saying this is football, you're not
- 1:23:04going to hit on every player so when you swing and Miss on
- 1:23:06players, you got to be willing to go out there and find
- 1:23:08somebody. True, very true.
- 1:23:13I got one more question on recruiting, and this is like his
- 1:23:18story in me is I'm asking you all can print, pride, get his
- 1:23:24Cornell Brown And when I say Cornell Brown, if you're a
- 1:23:28hockey fan is old as we are. You know who Cornell Brown is,
- 1:23:30but Cornell Brown was a win for Frank Beamer 30-plus years ago
- 1:23:34because he was a number one player in the state.
- 1:23:36He was basically a top 50 recruit and when he chose
- 1:23:40techie, chosen over UVA who effectively was looked at as the
- 1:23:43power in Virginia that point I'm amongst a bunch of other offers
- 1:23:48Can Brent pride, get that player sooner or later?
- 1:23:53To Richmond or excuse me to Virginia Tech.
- 1:23:58Yeah, I mean I think that's I think we're looking probably
- 1:24:01this cycle and next cycle is going to be the most important
- 1:24:04in terms of Landing that type of player.
- 1:24:08You know I don't think it's going to be a number one in the
- 1:24:10state of Virginia Tech caliber player but I think we can get a
- 1:24:16top 250, top 200 player that is whether it started out the gate
- 1:24:23or somebody that's contributing very early.
- 1:24:25But is setting the tone tone from a culture perspective,
- 1:24:30right out the gate. And we very May well have been
- 1:24:34talking to that player tonight. You know what time will tell?
- 1:24:38But I think I think that's that that's what you're going to need
- 1:24:41and I think it's for me if it's going to happen in these happen,
- 1:24:44either this cycle and that cycle.
- 1:24:46Yeah. And you know if you go back and
- 1:24:49listen to what Gabe said when he was on, he said you know, these
- 1:24:53coaches are giving you the opportunity and giving you, you
- 1:24:58know, the position to come in and play.
- 1:25:00So opportunities there for a lot of these recruits to come in and
- 1:25:05make that early impact in the be that Cornell type of
- 1:25:11Trendsetter, you know, Elite, he will recruit and come in and
- 1:25:16play early and, you know, change the culture of Virginia Tech to
- 1:25:21be back to what it's supposed to be there opening, the flood gate
- 1:25:25up and said, hey, this is yall's team, you know, we just, we want
- 1:25:28to know that you'll want to be a part of it and that's what I
- 1:25:31like, what game is done, you know, he he's took on the road
- 1:25:34to say, hey, I believe in this place and I want to get some
- 1:25:38other people hear that. Want to believe it until I don't
- 1:25:41want to dig too far into what he said, but it's on wax, you can
- 1:25:45go back and listen to it yourself.
- 1:25:47He said it's some other people that's involved that we don't
- 1:25:49know about yet, so we could have been talking to him.
- 1:25:53We could be talking about it. True.
- 1:25:57What you think? Sheldon does he need it soon?
- 1:26:00Does he need that type of player soon?
- 1:26:03I mean soon. Yeah maybe I mean it's hard to
- 1:26:06it's hard to project coming off you know a three-name season but
- 1:26:11I don't know. I think it's it'll be the 2025
- 1:26:15classified be more or - kind of where we're headed.
- 1:26:18I just think right now it's kind of too early as far as like
- 1:26:20where we are as a program to really be projecting too much in
- 1:26:23the future but yeah I'd say so is it sooner rather than later
- 1:26:26for sure. All right, good deal.
- 1:26:28All right, y'all before we get into more topics tonight, we are

- 1:26:49Grassroots digital studio.com forward slash free Dash website,
- 1:26:54Dash report. Now back to the episode Alright
- 1:26:58y'all. So second half of here, we are
- 1:27:00going to be talking will let Sheldon take over for a few
- 1:27:03minutes because Sheldon did some deep deep digging on Player
- 1:27:07Development and he's got a bunch of stuff he wants to show us.
- 1:27:10So she all the floors. Yours sir.
- 1:27:13Yeah. So one of the things I've always
- 1:27:15been interested in studying is really what goes into Player
- 1:27:17Development. It's something that's
- 1:27:19fascinating for a long time because I feel like there's just
- 1:27:21some little nuances that that go into what make a team successful
- 1:27:25or unsuccessful. And I think one thing that's
- 1:27:28helpful to look at is just, you know, what other programs are
- 1:27:31doing because you can't really, you know, figure out what the
- 1:27:35formula is. If you don't really study like
- 1:27:37how other teams do it and what what successful teams what
- 1:27:41successful teams do, they get part of ailment.
- 1:27:44So obviously, you know, I started recruiting Because a lot
- 1:27:46but I also acknowledge that they are imperfect.
- 1:27:49And so I just wanted to figure out really, what is sort of like
- 1:27:51the secret sauce that makes a program?
- 1:27:55When essentially, I think we look at it seemed like Virginia
- 1:27:59Tech. They're sort of like a
- 1:28:01perception among tech fans that, you know, back in the Glory Days
- 1:28:04of the Frank Beamer era check was winning with these, you
- 1:28:07know, three-star, recruit seized under scouted guys, that were
- 1:28:09kind of like the, you know, Blue Collar chip on your Older like
- 1:28:14Little Engine That Could but really that's not until
- 1:28:16accurate. Like we had tons of star players
- 1:28:18during the 2000s. You look at you know, Marcus
- 1:28:21Vick and Macho Harris and Xavier adibi and David Wilson like
- 1:28:25these were all players that were really talented.
- 1:28:27Prospects that other powerful programs wanted.
- 1:28:30So it wasn't just like we were kind of you know The Little
- 1:28:33Engine That Could like we're winning games because we had
- 1:28:35star players. We had good players, we beat you
- 1:28:37know we beat Alabama and Tennessee because we had better
- 1:28:39players than made it so it's always helpful to kind of, you
- 1:28:42know, keep in perspective. Our development only gets you so
- 1:28:45far and on a fundamental level, you do have to get recruiting,
- 1:28:48right? If you're not, if you're
- 1:28:49creating is not the biggest focus of your program, then you
- 1:28:52are doing it wrong. But with that being said, we can
- 1:28:55also look a lot at there's programs that do develop players
- 1:28:59very well and Brandi can give you the graphic up in a moment.
- 1:29:03So you can see, I made a list here, a top 10 player to jump
- 1:29:07rooms using, the SP plus rating should count for strength of
- 1:29:10schedule and kind of translate into the recruiting rankings.
- 1:29:13He's and in doing this, I wanted to identify really free common
- 1:29:17themes here, which I sort of looked at that.
- 1:29:20These programs have the first is coaching continuity.
- 1:29:23So you look at it seemed like Utah.
- 1:29:25How wedding has been there for 18 years Kirk rights?
- 1:29:27Iowa has been there for 24 years my kinda Oklahoma State, 18
- 1:29:31years. The average coaching tuner for
- 1:29:33these 10 programs is 10 years. So why that matters?
- 1:29:39You know, you look at a guy like France at Iowa, he's been there
- 1:29:42so long. He knows all the Coach in the
- 1:29:43state and he kinda has a good feel for what players are fit
- 1:29:47for playing in his program? You know, he had a strength
- 1:29:50coach that is no longer there but have been there for a while
- 1:29:52staying with Gummy at Oklahoma State and gummy is even on
- 1:29:55record saying that, you know, consistency is the most
- 1:29:57important thing establishing a big-time college football
- 1:29:59program and especially on the staff to like, you know, you
- 1:30:03want your coordinators to be there long time.
- 1:30:04That's a Clemson. Did a good job of you want your
- 1:30:06strength coach to be to be there for a long time?
- 1:30:08It's all about sort of establishing continuity so that
- 1:30:12crew It's see that and they kind of know like okay this is the
- 1:30:15Seth has been there for our. They've been doing it for a long
- 1:30:17time that kind of helps sell you sell players in the recruiting
- 1:30:21Trail. So if anyone's interject after
- 1:30:23that, after that point you're free to.
- 1:30:25Well, I think what that's also what we saw as well, like you
- 1:30:27said, we had star players but for the longest time it was the
- 1:30:30same staff here at tech for years, it is very important
- 1:30:35because go back to the you said you said it right off the
- 1:30:38get-go. Sheldon recruiting is important.
- 1:30:41But if you've got that coaching continuity with the Head.
- 1:30:43Coaches, the saying guy, parts of the staff are the same when
- 1:30:46they walk into that school. Everyone knows them.
- 1:30:51The players are likely comfortable because, yeah, you
- 1:30:53know, take coach calf coach. Kevin all had been walking down
- 1:30:57into 75, 74 Years. Everybody knew him.
- 1:31:01So it makes perfect sense. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:31:04You say coaching continuity is the same as identity.
- 1:31:08You know what I'm saying? When you got the same coaches,
- 1:31:11you know, that team is going to have a certain idea.
- 1:31:13Entity, you know, they're going to play a certain way.
- 1:31:15You know, a coach is going to just be a certain type of Coach
- 1:31:19whether it's the head coach, or the position coach, and you
- 1:31:22don't have a lot of revolving door type stuff.
- 1:31:26So that point is definitely a big point.
- 1:31:29The coaching continuity because like you said, when you are
- 1:31:33going to recruit and it's the same people year after year,
- 1:31:38number 1, that means that somebody's having some kind of
- 1:31:41success. You're Getting fired.
- 1:31:44Yep. They like where they are.
- 1:31:47So they're not leaving and they're building relationships.
- 1:31:52Well I hate to keep going back to.
- 1:31:53It gave Williams told us when coach Brooks got hired on to
- 1:31:58this staff that was his first offer.
- 1:32:01So it instantly jumped us up because of a coach.
- 1:32:06So yeah that's definitely a big Point.
- 1:32:10Yeah. To piggyback off of that, when
- 1:32:13we talk about you talk about identity.
- 1:32:14I also think about coaches having an innate ability of
- 1:32:19getting certain players at certain positions.
- 1:32:22Ins in a spot where they can make some big plays and get to
- 1:32:26the next level. So, when we think about Virginia
- 1:32:28Tech historically, we look at, okay done really well with dual
- 1:32:32threat. Quarterback sacks always had a
- 1:32:34solid solid running back core, really good, linebackers Elite
- 1:32:39defensive backs, right? So you knew if you were coming
- 1:32:42to Virginia Tech, you do what type of identity they had?
- 1:32:44And you knew what type of players they historically could
- 1:32:47get to the next level. So when you have coaching
- 1:32:51continuity, you That as a, it's no longer a variable, it's a
- 1:32:56constant, right? So you know what you're getting
- 1:32:58in that perspective. Definitely.
- 1:33:01And that kind of leads into my second key, which was having an
- 1:33:04identity and recruiting. So like I told you guys I'm here
- 1:33:07in Salt Lake City for the week. I went up took a run by Utah.
- 1:33:11Standard a Utah is a very very good program for a variety of
- 1:33:15reasons. But one of which I think is very
- 1:33:17important is the fact that they have established and identity in
- 1:33:20recruiting. So About in any given year about
- 1:33:23one third of the roster is composed of Polynesian players.
- 1:33:27And this is not a fact I knew until researching, but Samoan
- 1:33:30players are 58 times more likely to make the NFL than their
- 1:33:33American counterparts. So because of that, you know,
- 1:33:36history, that established there. I've got a pipe on of this
- 1:33:38pollination kids that just come up to the school and they
- 1:33:41develop them and they and they put them in a fellow.
- 1:33:44Make it also to take a team like Wisconsin who historically has
- 1:33:47been built on these you know big beefy mean offensive lineman.
- 1:33:50They're going to play Smash Mouth football.
- 1:33:51They're going to Run the ball down your throats and the reason
- 1:33:54they do that is because they have to Wisconsin does not have
- 1:33:57the access to skill talent to play another brand of football
- 1:34:00because recruiting is mostly defined by geography.
- 1:34:03So they have established that sort of niche of okay, we're
- 1:34:06gonna have a big offensive lineman.
- 1:34:08We're going to play, you know, Pro style and just try to run
- 1:34:10the ball down your throats and that's what they've done.
- 1:34:12Big white office environment. Well, and again, it goes back to
- 1:34:19what we just talked about here, right?
- 1:34:21Shelton. We were talking about good
- 1:34:23running backs and you talked about David Wilson, the line of
- 1:34:26great running backs. Go back to um go Kenny oxendine
- 1:34:30you go to Lee Suggs, you ghost if you go KJ you go Ryan
- 1:34:34Williams Darren Evans. It wasn't like 10.
- 1:34:37I got this one. Really good guy, a lot of those
- 1:34:40guys were highly coveted. It was that running back big
- 1:34:43deep on the inside Ron, you said, linebackers.
- 1:34:46And then the back in Setbacks. So we knew our dead identity and
- 1:34:51now we've got coach Pride effectively trying to start a
- 1:34:54new identity for a new era and now we have to see what that
- 1:34:59vision is over the next little while here in, can it come to
- 1:35:03fruition to what he wants it to be?
- 1:35:05Because I think we're going to talk about in a little while
- 1:35:07here, something about the defense because it's a certain
- 1:35:14portion. We're going to talk about a
- 1:35:16little while here but go ahead. Alton or branching, out Kalyan
- 1:35:19anything else to say on this one?
- 1:35:21I'm good on that. Y'all cover the good parts.
- 1:35:23They're okay. And so then I'll finish up here
- 1:35:26with the third key which is establishing a culture now,
- 1:35:30culture is kind of, you know, one of those Buzz words that
- 1:35:32people kind of fur out, but it really is a big deal.
- 1:35:35I think we talked about, you know, Utah, they've got a great
- 1:35:37culture that get place to stay, you know, they go on missionary
- 1:35:39trips for the LDS church for a couple of years they come back,
- 1:35:42they're 24, 25 years old. So they're essentially, you
- 1:35:44know, effectively like the six year, senior playing college
- 1:35:46football. And then, you know, Wisconsin
- 1:35:49they've got the walk on program, that's develop stars like, JJ
- 1:35:51Watt kind of know where they are and they recruit to that and
- 1:35:55then you click, it seemed like Kansas state, who's also on this
- 1:35:57list, you know, they hired a guy and Chris climbing who came from
- 1:36:00winning program at NDSU. So, you know, he had, you know,
- 1:36:04five or six great years are really learned how to win.
- 1:36:06Learn how to be a head coach, and you kind of take him from
- 1:36:08there. He's also, I think a very good
- 1:36:09cultural fit kind of similar to Virginia Tech, you know, he's
- 1:36:12not a guy for the Limelight, he's a he's a good fit, the kind
- 1:36:15of state and they're not flashy they just You know, develop
- 1:36:18players and kind of get the job done.
- 1:36:20So I think that third part of it is really just you know culture
- 1:36:23establishing knowing who you are and then recruiting to your
- 1:36:26identity. All right, so if there is
- 1:36:32obviously the best player development programs, who's the
- 1:36:36worst? Yes, we have that.
- 1:36:39We have that graphic as well. It's, it's pretty ugly.
- 1:36:50Can y'all hear me? It doesn't mean they're
- 1:37:28automatically going to be good like a four-star.
- 1:37:30Recruit Scott develop themselves, you need coaching.
- 1:37:32Coaching always matters. It matters whether you're
- 1:37:35recruiting three stars, four, stars or five stars, it always
- 1:37:37matters. And I think, you know, I was
- 1:37:39having a conversation the other day and maybe you guys could
- 1:37:41chime in, on this, with them a person.
- 1:37:44Whose opinion, I highly respect. I cannot reveal his name due to
- 1:37:46his is very high important job status.
- 1:37:49But he said, he actually thinks that the idea that Tech can out
- 1:37:53developed player. Out develop teams is kind of a
- 1:37:56misnomer. That they just have to out
- 1:37:58recruit them, you know, we talk about all the talent they got
- 1:38:01during the beaver days, you know, you look at a program,
- 1:38:03like, Georgia, Georgia won two national championships with a
- 1:38:07former walk-on quarterback who's now going to the NFL.
- 1:38:10So, if that's not an elite Player Development, then I don't
- 1:38:13know what is, I think, as much as we emphasize how much it
- 1:38:16matters. We have, that was.
- 1:38:16So, we also understand that there is sort of a limit to how
- 1:38:20much you can develop players. And at the end of the day, it
- 1:38:23does come down to recruiting studs.
- 1:38:25Like, there's just no getting around that.
- 1:38:26You got to recruit good. There's got good work ethics and
- 1:38:29just want to get better and on a fundamental level, you know,
- 1:38:32regardless of, you know, all the other factors that go into it.
- 1:38:35That's just what it boils down to is recruiting players that
- 1:38:37fit your school, your system and your identity.
- 1:38:40It's really silly to think about it, but we're talking about the
- 1:38:4385 87 88. Put the, it's easier to take an
- 1:38:4887 in to make it a better player, than 84 or an 83.
- 1:38:53Because if I'm not, and I know I'm talking numbers here, but
- 1:38:57but if they're here on a scale, then there is a chance to take a
- 1:39:01step up, right? It's like they're out there a
- 1:39:04high 3-star. Can we develop that to make him
- 1:39:07play like a high for star? There is that possibility?
- 1:39:11It's a lot easier to take that to go to here to take cam.
- 1:39:14Chancellor's are a dime a dozen, right?
- 1:39:16Yes. They just are low.
- 1:39:18Two stars that literally become 5 Stars.
- 1:39:22So again you make the great point, the better we recruit the
- 1:39:25more chances in this the easier developing.
- 1:39:29Yeah. Go ahead John, I'll let you
- 1:39:31finish. Okay.
- 1:39:32Yes. Just cook.
- 1:39:33I mean you take a guy like Caleb Fairley.
- 1:39:35Like he was a high three star. Yeah.
- 1:39:37But I think he was a four-star in the 24/7 rankings.
- 1:39:40Like if you ask people in the tech program, like they all knew
- 1:39:43he was an absolute stud. So there's always going to be,
- 1:39:46you know, some degree of like, you know, can we get the guys
- 1:39:48that maybe we think our little bit, you know, overlooked but to
- 1:39:51your point Curtis just take out on a one out of ten scale.
- 1:39:56If you recruit at a as a level 7 out of 10, it is significantly
- 1:39:59easier to be a 9 out of 10 program that it is if your
- 1:40:02create a level 5 out of 10. Okay, I'm all about.
- 1:40:04It's all about degrees and relativity.
- 1:40:07Yeah you're not going to get, you know, 12, or 13, high
- 1:40:12ceiling, guys, that are in 84 in every class.
- 1:40:15Like, at some point, you got to start recruiting guys that are a
- 1:40:19little bit more. Ready to play, right?
- 1:40:21Yeah. Everybody can't be a project.
- 1:40:23Yeah. Hey, are you coming to come into
- 1:40:26play? You can't have what you can't
- 1:40:28have a class full of projects that have.
- 1:40:30You got to have a game-changing player in every class, A couple
- 1:40:37of them really to be, you know, too.
- 1:40:39Get back then I ain't saying like they have to be a five star
- 1:40:43player, but you have to have somebody who's ready to step in
- 1:40:47and play. Yeah, you can't, you can't be
- 1:40:50averaging at or under an 86 for your class class, average, every
- 1:40:55year, right? So and that's kind of weird.
- 1:40:58Virginia Tech has lived up until, you know, hopefully this,
- 1:41:02this, this cycle here, you know, since kind of what 2019 2018.
- 1:41:09And you can't live like that, but you look at it this list,
- 1:41:12I'm Thomas mentioned it in the comment there.
- 1:41:16I'm shocked not to see a UNC or a Texas A&M on this on this
- 1:41:22list. Yeah.
- 1:41:24So UNC is I haven't talking to them a ton.
- 1:41:27They probably recruit around like a top 15, 20 ish level and
- 1:41:31they're probably more like a you know top 35-ish program I think
- 1:41:34people over State you know how bad how bad it is.
- 1:41:37Like they did. They did.
- 1:41:38The orange ball in 2020. You know, they went and they
- 1:41:41went 95 laughs. You're like, yes it's they're
- 1:41:43not getting as much out of their talent but it's not like, you
- 1:41:45know, they're not a Trainwreck essentially by contrast, you
- 1:41:49know you look at a team like let's just say Florida State
- 1:41:52like if they were an absolute tire fire under really tagger
- 1:41:55and obviously Mike Norvell had to take a couple years to build
- 1:41:57up that offensive line. Like that's, that's a much much
- 1:42:00more dire situation. So, yeah.
- 1:42:01Obviously there's always, you know, degrees to it.
- 1:42:03All right. So you've got all here, the best
- 1:42:06coaches. So I want to hear What you got
- 1:42:09to say about what what are the best coaches as part of that?
- 1:42:14Yeah, I don't so I don't have to go for it, but I had to put up
- 1:42:16on my computer. So Troy Calhoun, it Air Force,
- 1:42:20Hugh, freeze Ken niumatalolo a lots of service category
- 1:42:24presentation on this list. Oh yeah, Josh heupel, Tennessee
- 1:42:28shot clock at appstate, Jeff Monken at army, Frank Soldier,
- 1:42:31Ohio, Scott Satterfield person called Wedding and him.
- 1:42:34So obviously, the one name that might stick out, there is Josh
- 1:42:37heupel, obviously he, you know, he did a great job with him
- 1:42:40hooker, a Tennessee that team last year, they actually
- 1:42:42weren't. I They were 21st and composite
- 1:42:44Talent. They finished, you know, top 61
- 1:42:47the orange ball against Clemson. I think he is a really really
- 1:42:51good offensive coach. Like people did not give him
- 1:42:52enough credit for the, for the job he did for the job.
- 1:42:56He did UCF. I know that obviously, tech
- 1:42:58fans, you know, feel very agreed with the way that things ended
- 1:43:00with the theater staff and hooker.
- 1:43:03But I also think that, you know, at some point we just to give
- 1:43:06credits hyphal because he is just a genius offensively like
- 1:43:10hooker really Thrive his system. I don't think he would have
- 1:43:12thrived a lot of it. That all things might be a cheat
- 1:43:15code. Yeah, why won't be interested to
- 1:43:18see what Tennessee does this year?
- 1:43:20With what? Joe Joe building at the Hume?
- 1:43:25I'm a big hinden guy. So I want to see what they
- 1:43:29produce, the same type of offense, this next year as they
- 1:43:33did last year, not saying, the hype was not a good coach
- 1:43:36because he is, but I don't think they replicate that success this
- 1:43:40year. That's just me, though.
- 1:43:43Yeah. Milton's issue was always
- 1:43:44concerned consistency, he was very inconsistent in the starts
- 1:43:47that he had before him and took over, and he had some up and
- 1:43:51down, starts last year, after hitting got injured so well, I
- 1:43:55mean, even they got, they got the quarterback in the, in the,
- 1:43:57in the him as well, right? The kid, they paid all the money
- 1:44:01to Niko Niko something, right? I think you're right here.
- 1:44:07Yes, I saw it back they got again.
- 1:44:09I mean they've recruited very well.
- 1:44:11They have the pieces to be Top 10 team.
- 1:44:16I just don't, you know, I've been around this area for a long
- 1:44:20time, so I'm not sold on the on the tendency is back thing yet.
- 1:44:25But if they are, I got to give hypo his his credit because
- 1:44:29they've been they've been working at it for a long time.
- 1:44:32They had that Alabama curse on him for a long time, man, 15
- 1:44:35years. It was what to me is what
- 1:44:37happens when you assure out a guy that won a national
- 1:44:40championship or two Bad seasons. Well, not anymore.
- 1:45:05Happen for a little while. Really, like you said, there's a
- 1:45:15balance there, there's a balance, you have to develop
- 1:45:18with where Tech needs to be 100%, but you keep saying that
- 1:45:22you keep saying like you've got to have developmental, but
- 1:45:25you've got to have guys that can come just play like that need
- 1:45:29minimal development, you know, to get to back where you need to
- 1:45:33be in and that's what it's going to take.
- 1:45:35It's going to take good recruiting classes and I'm not
- 1:45:38saying time valuations. Now, by all means if gave is
- 1:45:42saying we go to get a top 15 recruiting class and we get a
- 1:45:45top team, 15 recruiting class. I'll be dancing over here.
- 1:45:48Come December. Trust me.
- 1:45:50Y'all want to talk about an episode regardless?
- 1:45:52What happens in the season if we if there is a teen number next
- 1:45:56to us during the close our show with Jeremy?
- 1:46:02I don't know if I'll go fifth Evan Williams, but I'm going to
- 1:46:05get fit, come on, man. You could, we get if we get a
- 1:46:07team recruiting class, I'm coming to Virginia and we
- 1:46:11recording, I'm recording live. It one of y'all's house.
- 1:46:15I'm telling you right now. It might be that might be meet
- 1:46:18me at Shelton's house on this couch, but I'm coming to.
- 1:46:21Somebody's house is sort of the tally foot is only at the swag
- 1:46:34or the drip factor in Tally. What were the three that you
- 1:46:37feel like are the winds right now for us?
- 1:46:41You know the Players Lounge. That's that's that's a that's
- 1:46:45good performance and Nutrition Center and then the progress on
- 1:46:51the athletic Village, all of that stuff is is wins.
- 1:46:55You know what I'm saying? But we've got, we got some other
- 1:46:59stuff going to as far as like, Some of it needs some work which
- 1:47:05I know we're going to get to but it's getting better.
- 1:47:08So, what? We'll get to the stuff that
- 1:47:12needs work, but the Players Lounge and and all of the things
- 1:47:15that they've renovated is definitely good because you see
- 1:47:18the pictures of, you know, like everybody's taking pictures in
- 1:47:23the Players Lounge. Yes.
- 1:47:24You know, and I think we were taking pictures in a fucking
- 1:47:27basement for like seven years, it looked like Dungeons and
- 1:47:33Dragons. It's like what was going on.
- 1:47:36So now we taking pictures. We got fucking lights, warts,
- 1:47:39and all types of shit. But anyway, I'm gonna let
- 1:47:43somebody else jump in. Well, I sit and think about just
- 1:47:48the nutrition center where, you know, they have a place to go
- 1:47:51right? Right after they're done.
- 1:47:54That's a huge. When you're off the field.
- 1:47:55You're right there. You don't have to do anything
- 1:47:56else. It's all catered to you in the
- 1:48:00way. Merriman's getting built up with
- 1:48:02some of that stuff going on with those.
- 1:48:04And again, is that what's going to absolutely sway, a player,
- 1:48:09maybe not, but it's that thing is that it's like the first
- 1:48:13visit, right? It's like the first visit first
- 1:48:17time you go into a restaurant and things, look, shitty.
- 1:48:20Do you come back? I don't even care if the food
- 1:48:23was good, food was good, but I'm looking around and come back to
- 1:48:26this place again. But if the atmosphere is good, I
- 1:48:29mean, I like the way this, look the food to I'm coming back for
- 1:48:31the second visit, it may not be what ends them completely, but
- 1:48:35it probably gets them back in the door two or three more
- 1:48:37times. Yeah, I really can't started to
- 1:48:41rub. I really can't overstate how
- 1:48:42important the a nutritionist areas in particular.
- 1:48:44Like I've I've talked to on multiple coaches at BT and
- 1:48:48different sports. That have cited at the nutrition
- 1:48:50center is being like a big part of it.
- 1:48:52I know this is a somewhat well-documented, but like,
- 1:48:55before that was built, we had guys eating, you know, catering
- 1:48:58like Dominos, pizza and Jimmy, John's Subs, after practice.
- 1:49:01Like, that's that's that is what good?
- 1:49:09The north to build your body. So that having that there is
- 1:49:11huge, like, that's a huge part of text facilities upgrades.
- 1:49:15Yeah, I feel like we were like rested on that.
- 1:49:16Okay. We'll Regina you take dining
- 1:49:18facilities are like number one or number two in the country.
- 1:49:20Yeah, but if they're not even the right stuff, that's not
- 1:49:23getting any better on the field. Well, Focus getting fat.
- 1:49:26Not muscular Jimmy Jimmy Johnson's.
- 1:49:28Not getting you to get off the edge against the alignment.
- 1:50:31Your locker rooms like you home, man.
- 1:50:32Like you spent a lot of time in your locker, you know, and you
- 1:50:36see people like LSU that has a comfortable place for the
- 1:50:39players thats it, so they can take a nap.
- 1:50:44It's a big deal man. It's a big deal of dealing now
- 1:50:46with how social media Works which is another thing that's on
- 1:50:50the needs. Work with high social media
- 1:50:52works, you get your players and you get your recruits to do
- 1:50:57marketing for you. Marketing is a big thing.
- 1:50:59Thing for sales period. Like hate this, put recruiting
- 1:51:05with sales but that's what it is.
- 1:51:07So when somebody has this fucking thing right here and
- 1:51:10they're able to pop it out that they're paying God knows how
- 1:51:13much of a month for pop it out and take some cool videos, cool
- 1:51:17pictures and say, hey, I'm over here at Virginia Tech and then
- 1:51:21they got that name up there in lights, blah, blah, blah, blah,
- 1:51:24blah, blah, that's cool. You know, we've been lacking
- 1:51:26that we've had, I think one time they show, Our locker rooms and
- 1:51:32it looked like fucking it looked like a clan fucking cross.
- 1:51:40I said, what the hell kind of what is that?
- 1:51:43You don't like our lockers is pitiful, man.
- 1:51:45So the locker rooms updated definitely that's good.
- 1:51:49That's coming. The social media has been doing
- 1:51:52better the general has. Yeah yeah and then that comes
- 1:51:59Along with the coaches giving access and things like that.
- 1:52:02So that's been better. And then the last one fucking
- 1:52:06uniforms man. Like I don't even think that
- 1:52:10I'll I do think that I uniforms a bad a little bit, but I think
- 1:52:15we have better combinations that we don't use.
- 1:52:20That's my problem. I think some of the combinations
- 1:52:23we have slick, he like, even when like All of these kids have
- 1:52:31been coming in in the recruits and stuff, go look at what
- 1:52:34they're wearing, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:52:36Like it ain't me. I mean, it is me.
- 1:52:39That's what I want, but you see what someone someone's got.
- 1:52:42The all-white song. Something all whites is
- 1:52:44definitely a big, the white helmets, different things like
- 1:52:47that. You see the guys wearing orange
- 1:52:49a whole Keystone sleeves. Like, yeah, we haven't thought
- 1:52:53about any of this shit. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:52:54Because I think we just had people with the mindset of They
- 1:52:59want to be a traditional school, but to be traditional, you have
- 1:53:03to have traditional wins, you have to have a winning
- 1:53:06tradition, we just don't have that, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:53:10You got to find other ways to be successful.
- 1:53:13So those uniforms are a big part of it, you know?
- 1:53:16Like again, none of that stuff matters.
- 1:53:18If you go out and you three and eight you have to year after
- 1:53:20year, but it plays a part in getting people to come?
- 1:53:24Well, I think to your point it's like I do like the traditional
- 1:53:27uniforms out the white It is when they hit the white.
- 1:53:30Perfect is tight. I mean, it's a Sleek.
- 1:53:33Look, I still love all the Rune. You can't roll out all the time,
- 1:53:38but to your point, the Orange is a couple years low looked great.
- 1:53:42Great. And still someone?
- 1:53:44Tell me in this crew here. Why haven't we won?
- 1:53:48Blackmore, I know the Boise State game was ass and it sucked
- 1:53:52at the end. But those uniforms go back.
- 1:53:55That was 2010. That's 12 13 years ago now.
- 1:53:57Yeah, those Uniformed, you could bring to today and they'd still
- 1:54:01be tight. They still have the uniforms on
- 1:54:04the uniforms. Do we work?
- 1:54:05What Frank's last game and Lane the black with the orange
- 1:54:10orange? Like those was nice uniforms,
- 1:54:13you know, it's just a variation man.
- 1:54:14And sometimes people need to see that.
- 1:54:17I think we need a fashion designer on the team.
- 1:54:21They can be me. I ate.
- 1:54:23Maybe they can pay me. 70 grand, I do it.
- 1:54:25I have us looking real. Like, they'll let me go.
- 1:54:28Okay, what about Sheldon? Brian y'all, y'all agree,
- 1:54:31anything else? You'll feel like needs work?
- 1:54:33Maybe doesn't need work or winning.
- 1:54:35I mean the uniforms to me, have become stale.
- 1:54:41I like so I'm a fan of the 99 Throwbacks.
- 1:54:44I think that's something that we should do every now and again.
- 1:54:47Hmm. But I think We need to, we need
- 1:54:51something fresh. Whether it's something kind of
- 1:54:54super clean. That's kind of been the trend
- 1:54:56lately or whether it's something more of a throwback to some of
- 1:55:02the uniforms we worn in the past, just kind of, you know,
- 1:55:07brought into a little more modern look now.
- 1:55:10But we need to get a out with the stupid straight behind the
- 1:55:14nameplate. Whatever the hell that trailing
- 1:55:17stripe is that that shit is goofy looking from behind.
- 1:55:20It looks a little better on the orange because it Blends in.
- 1:55:23But on the maroon it sticks out like a sore thumb, same with the
- 1:55:27white. So I'm not a big fan of that.
- 1:55:30I know it's like kind of a nod to this side that but it doesn't
- 1:55:35look good. I'm not a big fan of stripes in
- 1:55:37general, unless they're likes, tight, Pinstripes, or on the
- 1:55:41cuff of the of a sleeve, get the shoulder straps away, get the
- 1:55:46deck Stripes away, give me something clean and fresh.
- 1:55:50Good. Yeah, uniforms could definitely
- 1:55:53use a little tweak. I will also say with regards to
- 1:55:56facilities, they probably don't matter as much in the in the
- 1:56:00days of like the NIU because cars are getting paid, but you,
- 1:56:04you do need to have good facilities to win at a top-25
- 1:56:06level. Like they're, you know, that's
- 1:56:09that's kind of like a sort of rite of passage for every human
- 1:56:11wants to be successful in football to show two recruits
- 1:56:14and to fans and everything that you're committed to winning
- 1:56:16football. I think what s done, upgrading
- 1:56:18the facilities are last couple years have been fantastic with.
- 1:56:20The players are players l'orange.
- 1:56:22And just, you know, everything else will I G and everything.
- 1:56:24Like that's been really, really good.
- 1:56:26I think you're going to see hopefully that they often
- 1:56:27recruiting pretty soon. All right, Brian.
- 1:56:30Let's pitch it to you because the next one was kind of your
- 1:56:32big hot button topic and white. Why you feel like this is
- 1:56:36important man. Yeah, we're going to talk a
- 1:56:39little bit about NFL success and that's, that's been a big thing
- 1:56:44for me. I know I talked about a little
- 1:56:45bit earlier when I was talking about, kind of that culture in
- 1:56:48that identity, when we think about Virginia Tech, we think
- 1:56:53about again dual-threat, quarterback sacks that have a
- 1:56:57shot at making the league or get drafted into the league.
- 1:57:01We think about running backs that have some success in the
- 1:57:05NFL. We think about linebackers Hers.
- 1:57:08And obviously we think about BB you but I'm going to
- 1:57:14specifically point out the offensive player success in the
- 1:57:18NFL because I feel like in the last 10 12 years that's where we
- 1:57:21really fallen off a map. I think we still had some
- 1:57:24success. Getting those players to the NFL
- 1:57:27on the defensive side of the ball, we've really fallen off a
- 1:57:30map on the offensive side of the ball, your takeaway Khalil
- 1:57:34Herbert. We haven't had a running back,
- 1:57:36go to the NFL since David Wilson, you know, we look at
- 1:57:41outside of offensive line. We haven't really had high draft
- 1:57:44picks coming from that side of the ball in the last decade.
- 1:57:49So that's where we need to start seeing some traction if we're
- 1:57:53going to, I think take the next step because if you're not
- 1:57:57putting players into the NFL at skill positions on offense, it's
- 1:58:01really hard to attract them to play for your program.
- 1:58:05It's true man. And that's where it leads and
- 1:58:07you say the offensive players because we can all look and see
- 1:58:10for ourselves defensively. We've been putting guys, first
- 1:58:13film things. First, two day, picks
- 1:58:16consistently, the last decade, and it is going to take an
- 1:58:19offensive play. Do we, do we ever get one that
- 1:58:22clicks engine starts bringing that reputation back.
- 1:58:27But something else, you mentioned Brian.
- 1:58:29And what I love tonight. Gabe's interview, who do you
- 1:58:32say? He talked to Tremaine Tremaine.
- 1:58:36Oh yeah, it is a, that means. Yeah, that's unbelievable.
- 1:58:41And it's not only having players talk to them about who we are
- 1:58:46but then bringing them back. Yeah, and that's how you build a
- 1:58:52culture man. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:58:54It was like for so long, we heard so many players and so
- 1:58:57many, you know, former players talk about, you know, we haven't
- 1:59:01been welcome back or there's no open door policy.
- 1:59:04Or we can't get tickets. And we can't do this.
- 1:59:07We can't like, you're not hearing that right now.
- 1:59:10Do you know what I'm saying? You're not hearing that.
- 1:59:12It seems like everybody even though we had a rough season
- 1:59:15seems like everybody's still behind prior all last year.
- 1:59:19You know, we talked to the white, we talked to Lauren
- 1:59:21Johnson, which sent his kid or you know I ain't no place in.
- 1:59:26This kid is kid made his own choice Braylon Johnson to go to
- 1:59:30Virginia Tech but he, yeah, he blessed he blessed it, you know.
- 1:59:34And he Said, hey, I think these guys are going in the right
- 1:59:36direction. So you've got former players.
- 1:59:39The saying, hey, we got this thing, going back in the right
- 1:59:43direction. We just gotta give it a little
- 1:59:45bit of time, and we're going to be.
- 1:59:46All right, so Virginia Tech has always had that that DBU Mantra
- 1:59:56on it, you know, whatever people are going to argue, whatever,
- 2:00:00but should be LS, your should be this, but I will say I'm a
- 2:00:03Titans fan. And I was not excited about
- 2:00:06Caleb Farley getting drafted to the Titans just because I knew
- 2:00:10his injury history. But if he was at any other
- 2:00:13school besides Virginia Tech, he would have got drafted that
- 2:00:16high. That's just my opinion.
- 2:00:18I think the reputation of Virginia Tech developing
- 2:00:23cornerbacks as well as what he did on the field.
- 2:00:26When he did play played a part in him, get drafted that her, he
- 2:00:29would have been at a school. Like I just say, man, I don't
- 2:00:33know maybe Marilyn, North Carolina.
- 2:00:35I don't think he gets drafted. I don't think he gets drafted
- 2:00:38that. So we got to dig back into that
- 2:00:42to, you know, like I know that's not on there when we talk about
- 2:00:46offensive success. I mean, when we talk about NFL
- 2:00:48success, you're talkin my offense but we do got to dig
- 2:00:51back into that and then maybe some of those players when we
- 2:00:55get those I don't top 20 defensive again, top 15
- 2:01:01defensive defenses, the offense, has some players that flash and
- 2:01:07then, you know shit, we put some players in the lead because I
- 2:01:11know most Virginia Tech fans did not think that we wouldn't see
- 2:01:17Jerrod Evans in the league like watching him play that one
- 2:01:21season is like yeah he's going somewhere you know, everybody
- 2:01:25thought that but it's partly because of The defense, put them
- 2:01:29in positions as well. So, it's got to be an overall
- 2:01:32effort. They still gonna play
- 2:01:36complimentary football and that that goes back to having skill
- 2:01:40on both sides of the ball. There's one last piece I want to
- 2:01:45talk about it and I kind of made this my little baby as we were
- 2:01:48putting this together last few weeks and that's reputation.
- 2:01:52And, you know, the first thing I say is Blaine's always going to
- 2:01:57be like Loud. It always is, it doesn't matter,
- 2:02:01but I want it to be scary again for again, for our Heyday.
- 2:02:05Brian tally, it was scared teams, did not want to freaking
- 2:02:13come play here, and a lot of that was to the second point of
- 2:02:16we played nasty, you came here. You walked out with war wounds
- 2:02:21and to when I say so, making Lane scary again is almost like
- 2:02:24that same mentality of playing nasty hitting people.
- 2:02:28Being physical as hell, both on offense and defense their
- 2:02:32reputations, start building, and you're already inside that
- 2:02:36teams. Mind that they Sunday comes on
- 2:02:39and they see Virginia Tech's on the schedule, right?
- 2:02:42We got a man. We might beat them, but we're
- 2:02:44going to come home. We're going to be bloodied.
- 2:02:46Somebody's gonna go home with a broken bone.
- 2:02:47We will have busted ribs will be pleading.
- 2:02:50And then the last piece is y'all said it time and time again.
- 2:02:53Is I don't think DB use going anywhere.
- 2:02:56We look at what we've got now, with Jalen stroke at what we've
- 2:02:58got with Mansoor, some of those young guys coming in that's not
- 2:03:01going anywhere. Charges went to the league.
- 2:03:04It's true. Yes guys.
- 2:03:05Just want you to leave. It's not going anywhere.
- 2:03:09I'm going to pitch this to Sheldon and you talk about one
- 2:03:11of the parts reputation you want to come on Sheldon but take out
- 2:03:15defensive back. What's one position group?
- 2:03:17You wish the Hokies could consistently put studs out
- 2:03:20again. Hmm, I'll take may be offensive
- 2:03:25line, I mean, we have a while. Yeah, we love you.
- 2:03:31And we also had a, we had a good run of running back to email and
- 2:03:36Kevin Jones and all those guys. I think the skill thing, might
- 2:03:41partly be like, a different Graphics issue.
- 2:03:44Like how what's this go? I will tell in our recruiting
- 2:03:46gradius like, you know, I would imagine most of the scale tones,
- 2:03:50probably in like Florida, George California.
- 2:03:53Like what are we do? We have like Geographic
- 2:03:55proximity to a lot of good talented, quarterbacks and
- 2:03:58receivers and running backs like I'm Jin Liquors like because I
- 2:04:00don't know. I will say the overall
- 2:04:06quarterback Talent level in Virginia has kind of fallen off
- 2:04:10the mat so that that's that has hurt us.
- 2:04:14You know, probably Trace make soil is probably the last big
- 2:04:18name guy. Yeah seriously.
- 2:04:21Yeah. And so I mean the the talent
- 2:04:23level at quarterback in the state has fallen off
- 2:04:26significantly. That's hurt our ability to
- 2:04:30Recruit skill position and sometimes it's hard to recruit
- 2:04:33wide receiver. When you can't recruit a
- 2:04:35high-level quarterback, especially when you try to lure
- 2:04:38in state Talent. So I think one is beginning the
- 2:04:41other here, obviously, we had some success with Jerrod
- 2:04:45getting, you know, recruited there when winter came in.
- 2:04:49And then hidden hooker Robeson was a talented quarterback from
- 2:04:53North Carolina, but there really hasn't been a ton of in-state
- 2:04:58town at the quarterback position.
- 2:05:00Position and again a good while and it's definitely had been
- 2:05:03consistent. Yeah, I don't you know just
- 2:05:07thinking about recruiting and thinking about what we are.
- 2:05:10I don't know many wide receivers or quarterbacks that'll just go,
- 2:05:17you know. Hey I'm gonna go to Virginia
- 2:05:18Tech and I'm going to the league like it's that's a hard sale
- 2:05:22because that's just not who we are at the moment.
- 2:05:25Maybe we can transition to that one day, but that's not us.
- 2:05:28But what I'd like to see What I think we are is players like
- 2:05:33Gabe Williams. Coming off the edge linebackers
- 2:05:37and getting those defensive ends, get those dominant
- 2:05:41defensive ends because for a while that we always had a
- 2:05:44defensive end that people 100% had the game plan for, you know,
- 2:05:49and even even some of the guys who didn't have long stints in
- 2:05:52the league when they were there. They were very, very productive
- 2:05:56at the defensive end position. So I think, if we can get back
- 2:06:00to To consistently having that NFL caliber end at least one,
- 2:06:06you know, of course you want more than one, but at least one,
- 2:06:10I think that that, that takes us back to the old defense that we
- 2:06:15had, you know what I'm saying? Even with like Trayvon hill, we
- 2:06:19had trade run. He'll like, people had the game
- 2:06:21plan for him. Yes, you know, you go back, you
- 2:06:23talk about daddy. Nicholas James Gail World.
- 2:06:28Kale world's, give me all this. Goes on and on just about the
- 2:06:32that that position Edge rusher. And I say defensive end, but I
- 2:06:36mean Ed Ruscha. So when you talk about, you
- 2:06:38know, even Tremaine coming off, the end is fucking scary.
- 2:06:43You know what I'm saying? To have a linebacker that can
- 2:06:45cover that much ground and put pressure on a, on a quarterback,
- 2:06:49but also be a run stopper. We got to get back to having
- 2:06:52some players like that. So I think that's the position
- 2:06:56that we should focus the most on because that's what probably is.
- 2:06:59He's come from Defense. He's come from being a
- 2:07:02linebacker coach and we keep throwing that Michael Parsons
- 2:07:04name. Not Michael Parsons name out.
- 2:07:06And then you already have people that you can point to that even
- 2:07:10if he didn't coach him. Like, I think if Amare Bono had
- 2:07:15come back, I think it would have helped him a lot.
- 2:07:17Uh-huh. You know, to sit a year under
- 2:07:20Pride Marv, think it would help them buddy, he's in the league,
- 2:07:23he made it, you know what I'm saying?
- 2:07:24He's living his dream. So you can recruit a play and
- 2:07:28say, hey, this guy went to Virginia Tech Maribor know, give
- 2:07:32him on the phone, then you got your main it because those guys
- 2:07:34like that that's the position right now that we can recruit at
- 2:07:38and we can bring back pretty quick.
- 2:07:41You know, I'm hoping that we see Kelly Lawson, take that next
- 2:07:45step and be one of those guys, as well.
- 2:07:48So, if prior can, you know, live up to his living up to his
- 2:07:52reputation and get a couple of those guys to the next level,
- 2:07:55man, that'll that'll put Virginia Tech back on the map a
- 2:07:59little bit. Where we need to be, in my
- 2:08:02opinion. Yeah, I mean, we talked about a
- 2:08:05little bit everything, you know, we talked about conference
- 2:08:07realignment, we talked about the administration and I
- 2:08:09overcrowding every player development drip, we talked
- 2:08:15about reputation, but the key to all of this is that we gotta win
- 2:08:20some damn games, right? We go out there and win some
- 2:08:23games, some of these other things, get a lot easier and
- 2:08:27that's just going to compound upon itself until.
- 2:08:30You know, we can build ourselves back up to where we want to be.
- 2:08:32So, winning winning games, is going to go a long.
- 2:08:34Way. Obviously, he is key and I think
- 2:08:37Brian. Yep.
- 2:08:38And I think the, I think the thing is, if we start winning
- 2:08:41games, everything we discuss here tonight, you start seeing
- 2:08:44little checks, right? Mmm, and we we landed Gabe, some
- 2:08:49of those guys gaze been talking about we landed them and they
- 2:08:51came in and did it right away. Hey you remember that kid from
- 2:08:55Ohio tally didn't like he's the best damn defensive tackle on
- 2:08:59the team right now because they developed it right?
- 2:09:02It's like it. It's right.
- 2:09:04It's got to be a checkmark. It's got to be everything.
- 2:09:07I think all the stuff we hit on and we talk to her tonight.
- 2:09:10Y'all all done. Awesome.
- 2:09:12Hidden points if we start checking them.
- 2:09:16There's no reason we shouldn't win drink.
- 2:09:22Green. And if you start winning the
- 2:09:23games, there's no reason you can't get back into those
- 2:09:25conversations with some of those Elite Talent guys that we need
- 2:09:29to start those building blocks on that front.
- 2:09:33Because if you can win some games recruiting players to your
- 2:09:37program, gets a lot easier. I'm gonna just say it here.
- 2:09:40Now, I know we been running kind of long and we get ready to get
- 2:09:44out of here, but I want everybody in the twittersphere
- 2:09:48in all the social media world's to understand it all.
- 2:09:51Was one of the first to say this is going to be a good year.
- 2:09:55Y'all motherfuckers kept talking and saying we was going to be
- 2:09:59sorry and we couldn't recruit this.
- 2:10:01What happened? And now see you on the
- 2:10:04timelines. Having parties.
- 2:10:08Just telling you you need to think back to you boy, tally.
- 2:10:11And I told y'all it was coming. I still got that optimism.
- 2:10:16This is the year and again and ain't saying we back.
- 2:10:21Get us to A bowl game and we back in now baby.
- 2:10:24We good finally save you. Not keeping that same energy,
- 2:10:27take the Mona. All right, boys.
- 2:10:31Anything, anything breaking breaking breaking for me?
- 2:10:37I just want to tell Shelton, man.
- 2:10:39Have a safe trip. Yeah, don't be out there
- 2:10:42wrestling. No bears and mountain lions and
- 2:10:44nothing. Hey, you know, I know how white
- 2:10:47people do when y'all get in nature.
- 2:10:51Hey, Be like me. You hear a strange noise.
- 2:10:54You go to other way. Yeah, we'll see.
- 2:10:58I guess I got a small pocket knife.
- 2:10:59That's all I got. So they can do a whole lot of
- 2:11:03damn police. You got something well, shall
- 2:11:06men, we appreciate you. Taking shelter was on vacation.
