- 0:00Hey everyone and welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:02culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:05media, the creator economy, and the digital space every Monday
- 0:08through Thursday. My name is Annabelle and I'm
- 0:11your Wednesday Mini Scroll host and also the deputy editor of
- 0:14the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17I hope everyone is having a great week.
- 0:20Since I last spoke to you guys, I have spent the first half of
- 0:23my week recovering from seeing Charlie XCX at a festival on the
- 0:26weekend. She was genuinely so good and I
- 0:30can't stop thinking about her performance so I am anxiously
- 0:33waiting for more TikTok videos from her festival run here in
- 0:37Australia to show up on my four year page.
- 0:39But that I don't really have much to say this week other than
- 0:43Please remember to write, review and subscribe.
- 0:45And let's just get right into the stories.
- 0:47So the first story I have this week, to be honest, is not
- 0:50really tech, but it is kind of political adjacent.
- 0:53And I have just really been wanting to talk about it.
- 0:56And this is what happens when you give me an opportunity to
- 0:58host a podcast. We need to break down everything
- 1:01that has recently happened with Jack Schlossberg.
- 1:03Firstly, if you are unfamiliar with Jack, he is the grandson of
- 1:08U.S. President John F Kennedy and
- 1:10other than being part of one of the most prolific US political
- 1:13dynasties, he has gained popularity among Gen.
- 1:16Z for his unhinged social media posts and also he was Vogue's
- 1:20political correspondent during the campaign last year.
- 1:23Through his posts, it was clear that his online presence was a
- 1:27departure from the traditional image of the Kennedy family.
- 1:30Past generations have really maintained a polished,
- 1:33statesmanlike public persona, whereas Jack kind of leaned into
- 1:36the chaos. The social media posts in
- 1:38question could really be anything from comparing himself
- 1:41to Audrey Hepburn to making videos during the 2024 U.S.
- 1:45presidential campaign, essentially trolling now Vice
- 1:49President JD Vance. Hi JD, it's me Jack.
- 1:53I'm at Kamala HQ and I miss you and I was just thinking about
- 1:57you and wondering why you refuse to accept the results of the
- 2:002020 election. That's bad, JD.
- 2:04No matter how eccentric much of his content was, social media
- 2:08users really loved it and you would see his comment sections
- 2:12flooded with comments like this man has no drafts or this man
- 2:16has never had a second thought. Because truly his content was so
- 2:20chaotic and aside from really building up his online presence
- 2:23last year, whether it be for the right or wrong reasons, he has
- 2:27completely pivoted. Last week he deleted all of his
- 2:30social media after posting a rather cryptic message on X that
- 2:33read quote. I'm sorry to everyone I heard I
- 2:36was wrong. I'm deleting all my social media
- 2:38forever it's been fun. Thanks anyway everyone.
- 2:41So the reason why I wanted to report on this is to cover some
- 2:44of the theories floating around online as to why he
- 2:47spontaneously deleted his social media presence.
- 2:50And the first theory is a little bit techie so it felt like it
- 2:53fit in mini scroll tech a little bit.
- 2:56With that preface, some users claim that his decision to
- 3:00delete his social media has something to do with censorship,
- 3:03especially as the Internet and its platforms move further and
- 3:06further to the right. I don't think this is
- 3:08necessarily the reason why Jack left the platform, but I do
- 3:11think it's an interesting point to consider.
- 3:13Over the past few weeks, there has been a lot of conversation
- 3:16around censorship on social media, with many people on the
- 3:18left side of politics feeling the need to speak and algo speak
- 3:21more frequently. We covered that here on Mini
- 3:24Scroll when I spoke about the cute winter boots trend, but I
- 3:26haven't necessarily thought about this shift in terms of
- 3:29platforms essentially D platforming figures that don't
- 3:31push out their agenda. Well, I don't think we are
- 3:33necessarily there quite yet. I definitely think it is
- 3:36something to look out for if social media platforms continue
- 3:39sliding further and further towards one end of the political
- 3:42spectrum. Aside from the discussions
- 3:44around censorship, there are three other main theories that
- 3:48are probably more likely. The first is around mental
- 3:51health and burnout. Given the intensity of the US
- 3:55political climate at the moment, it's entirely plausible that
- 3:58Jack simply needed to disengage. Many political commentators and
- 4:02public figures have stepped away from social media after
- 4:04prolonged exposure to online criticism and hostility.
- 4:08And of course, the pressures of being a Kennedy, especially 1
- 4:12actively engaging a political discourse, could have
- 4:15exacerbated that need for a break.
- 4:16And I think it's totally acceptable for anyone,
- 4:19especially with everything going on right now in the political
- 4:22space, in the digital space, to need to take a break, whether
- 4:25you're a public figure or not. The second theory is his
- 4:28political ambitions. So this theory is basically that
- 4:31Jack is scrubbing his digital footprint ahead of a future
- 4:35campaign run for some type of elected position.
- 4:38This does make sense because his posts, while entertaining, could
- 4:42be a liability if you ever sought office.
- 4:44And the third theory is that his departure from social media has
- 4:49come off the back of a feud with an American political
- 4:51commentator named Megyn Kelly. And this appears to be the most
- 4:55immediate trigger. Jack posted a video to social
- 4:58media where he criticized Megyn Kelly's beliefs.
- 5:02Hey. Hey, Megyn Kelly.
- 5:03It's me, Jack Flosberg. You insulted me.
- 5:05And so I'm just checking in, starting a dialogue, seeing if
- 5:08you're OK. The two genders rule must be
- 5:11tough. And stop attacking trans people.
- 5:14You do it for a living professionally on your show.
- 5:16I don't really get that. I don't get what makes that so
- 5:19fun for you. And then on February 5th, Daily
- 5:22Mail writer Maureen Callahan wrote an article essentially
- 5:25calling Jack self absorbed and privileged.
- 5:28Many people have said that this article was quite savage.
- 5:32Jack later tweeted angrily about the journalist and the host, and
- 5:36then he left social media. As of the time I was researching
- 5:40this, he hasn't returned to the digital space, but he did appear
- 5:44on Jen Psaki's podcast, who is a political commentator and a
- 5:47former government official of both the Obama and Trump
- 5:50administrations. Regardless of the reason behind
- 5:53his exit, Jack's trajectory really shows us that political
- 5:56figures engaging with social media in an era where virality
- 5:59is king is definitely a double edged sword.
- 6:02Whether this is just a temporary break or a strategic rebrand, or
- 6:05maybe just the end of his online persona, it shows us that no
- 6:10one, Kennedy or not, can operate while being so chronically
- 6:14online forever, even if it helps energize young people.
- 6:18So thank you for letting me talk about Jack Schlossberg because I
- 6:21was deeply invested in his content last year.
- 6:25But let's just get back to the tech world.
- 6:28So the next story I wanted to touch on was that Roblox,
- 6:31Discord, Open AI, and Google have come together to establish
- 6:34a new child safety group. I'm sure that everyone listening
- 6:37to this podcast is at least familiar with Open AI and
- 6:40Google, but Roblox and Discord may be a little bit more niche.
- 6:44So if you are unfamiliar, Roblox is an online games platform that
- 6:49allows users to play games that they've made or games by other
- 6:53users. It's typically known as a
- 6:56platform that is dominated by Jen Elf, but I will say that
- 6:59older people do use the platform, including myself.
- 7:02I have been known to play a game of dress to impress or two.
- 7:06And according to 2023 data reported by The Verge, more than
- 7:11half of the platform's users are older than 13.
- 7:14And the platform's fastest growing demographic at the time
- 7:16of this report was users between 17 and 24 years old.
- 7:22OK, so we've got Roblox covered. And Discord is, of course,
- 7:26popular among gaming communities and is a voice, video and text
- 7:29chat app where people can join different servers around
- 7:32specific interests. It is also popular among younger
- 7:36users. This coalition of Roblox,
- 7:38Discord, Open AI, and Google have established the robust Open
- 7:42Online Safety Tools Initiative, or Roost for short.
- 7:46It was unveiled at the recent French AI Action Summit.
- 7:49So the goal of Roost is to essentially make safety
- 7:53technologies more accessible to companies by providing free open
- 7:57source AI tools for identifying, reviewing and reporting child
- 8:00sexual abuse material. Over the first four years, Roost
- 8:04has secured more than $27 million in funding from leading
- 8:08philanthropists and major technology companies.
- 8:11Something like this has been a long time coming and will be
- 8:15super important to prevent danger for children online.
- 8:18As Jess Weatherbed writes for The Verge quote, the Roost
- 8:22announcement comes amid a huge regulatory battle regarding
- 8:25child safety on social media and online platforms, with companies
- 8:29seeking to appease lawmakers with self regulation methods.
- 8:32The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reports
- 8:35that suspected Child Exploitation increased by 12%
- 8:38between 2022 and 2023. In this article, Weatherbed
- 8:42continues by noting that platforms like Discord and
- 8:44Roblox are particularly culpable because of their young user
- 8:48base, pointing specifically to a California lawsuit that was
- 8:51filed in 2022 which claimed that platforms failed to stop adults
- 8:55from messaging children without supervision.
- 8:58When it comes to Roost, and Roblox specifically, according
- 9:02to reporting from Fast Company Quote, among the tools Roblox
- 9:06has developed is an open source AI model that analyzes audio
- 9:09clips to detect profanity, racism, bullying, sexting, and
- 9:13other disallowed content. While I do think that this is a
- 9:16solid step forward, especially with many tech giants on board,
- 9:20I will say that much of the information around the
- 9:23initiative is rather vague. I will give this a little bit of
- 9:26slack because it is such a recent announcement, but based
- 9:30on what we have so far, I will say that relying on AI
- 9:34moderators is good, but not foolproof.
- 9:37Though much of the commentary I've seen so far around Roost
- 9:41has been positive, I have seen a couple of comments from users,
- 9:44particularly on Blue Sky, saying that they hope this initiative
- 9:47won't decrease human moderators, who often play an important role
- 9:52alongside AI when it comes to detecting concerning behavior on
- 9:55these platforms. My last story for today is about
- 9:59Elon Musk and Open AI. I don't really want to bring up
- 10:04Elon Musk every week on this podcast, but I fear there has
- 10:07been some updates that are worth discussing today.
- 10:10I will not be getting into all the doge discourse, which is the
- 10:14Department of Government efficiency or of course the
- 10:18meme, but we're not getting into that today.
- 10:20So Elon Musk has made a bid to purchase Open AI, which is
- 10:24obviously the company behind ChatGPT.
- 10:26Elon Musk alongside a team of investors submitted as 97.6
- 10:31billion bid to purchase Open AI earlier this week.
- 10:34You may be thinking that this isn't exactly out of character
- 10:37for Elon Musk considering he did buy Twitter, but there is
- 10:41another layer to this bid. As reported by Brian Heater for
- 10:44TechCrunch quote, the unsolicited bid is the latest
- 10:47escalation by Musk in his war with Co founder Sam Altman with
- 10:51whom he Co founded Open AI with numerous other individuals back
- 10:54in 2015. If you're unfamiliar with this,
- 10:57Elon Musk ended up leaving Open AI in 2018 and from memory, it
- 11:02was a little bit around conflict of interest stuff with Tesla,
- 11:05but also differing visions for the company.
- 11:08Open AI has become extremely valuable since then, not just on
- 11:12the generative AI front, but also it is working to develop
- 11:15its own chips, which is essential for innovation.
- 11:18Since leaving, Musk has become embroiled in a legal battle with
- 11:21Open AI, making things harder for the company to move from a
- 11:25nonprofit to for profit company. Quote.
- 11:28The Musk LED team is positioning the move as a bid to refocus
- 11:31Open AI on open sourced AI, as was its initial aim.
- 11:35Heater continues for TechCrunch. I will just add for context that
- 11:39Open AI has called Elon Musk's legal claims as baseless and
- 11:43overreaching. But besides all this, in the
- 11:46Sizzle newsletter, Cam Wilson adds that Elon's move to buy
- 11:50Open AI is also an attempt to make it, quote, harder for Open
- 11:54AI to lowball its own value as part of its planned transition
- 11:58to a for profit company, which would presumably have big tax
- 12:01implication. As you would expect after
- 12:03hearing all of this back and forth, Sam Altman did refuse the
- 12:07offer he took to X and wrote quote, no thank you, but we will
- 12:11buy Twitter for 9.74 billion if you want.
- 12:15I will just say his response was a little bit cheeky given that
- 12:18he said Twitter instead of X and also moved the decimal point in
- 12:22Elon's bid for Open AI. Just one space to the left.
- 12:26I worry we cannot get through one week without the tech Bros
- 12:30fighting it out. Anyway, that is everything from
- 12:33me for today. I really hope you enjoyed this
- 12:36week's episode. Please remember to rate, review,
- 12:38and subscribe. Once again.
- 12:40We are on the journey to 1K Spotify star reviews as I say
- 12:45every week at this point. But I will see you next
- 12:48Wednesday and Lauren will speak to you tomorrow.
- 12:51Thanks. Bye.
