- 0:04Speaker 1: Very excited to have Taylor Twelman on here. Us. Soccer
- 0:09Speaker 1: is doing things we've only seen him do once before.
- 0:11Speaker 1: This is very exciting. Taylor put us there last night.
- 0:14Speaker 1: If you don't mind, then we'll talk about Lake Tahoe
- 0:16Speaker 1: here in just a second, because soccer seems to be
- 0:18Speaker 1: getting in the way of his preparations for the Lake
- 0:21Speaker 1: Tahoe Celebrity Golf Tournament. But put us there last night
- 0:26Speaker 1: as the United States is advancing on here to what
- 0:29Speaker 1: place they've only been to once. What were your thoughts.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Yeah, it's good, man, it's really good. I think the
- 0:35Speaker 2: tournament got off to a bang that kind of captivated
- 0:38Speaker 2: the sec ACC college football fan right that opening game
- 0:44Speaker 2: against Paraguay. It's not the fact that they won, it
- 0:48Speaker 2: was in the manner that they won. And then Australia
- 0:51Speaker 2: following up that completely different type of game and they
- 0:55Speaker 2: get a clean sheet and they win that to nil.
- 0:57Speaker 2: So to gotts. They kind of captivated the audience very quickly.
- 1:01Speaker 2: And then all of a sudden, you see Paraguay upset Germany,
- 1:07Speaker 2: you see England go to the brink. You see Senegal
- 1:10Speaker 2: have a two zero lead, they end up losing three two.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Now all of a sudden, the general public saying, hang
- 1:16Speaker 2: on minute, like are we good? Can we really do this?
- 1:20Speaker 2: And I just think last night's game for the general
- 1:24Speaker 2: sports fan, I don't think you understand Bosia. That's their
- 1:28Speaker 2: first knockout round game ever, so the only thing they
- 1:30Speaker 2: wanted to do was make it uncomfortable, make it ugly.
- 1:34Speaker 2: I thought they did that. It wasn't the most aesthetically
- 1:39Speaker 2: appeasing game, but it doesn't matter. There was real grit,
- 1:43Speaker 2: there was real fight. I thought the United States answered
- 1:47Speaker 2: the bell numerous amount of times and for the first
- 1:50Speaker 2: time in this tournament. My man, they saw adversity with
- 1:54Speaker 2: a ridiculous red card and they answered that bell. So
- 1:59Speaker 2: it was a complete performance, professional performance, for lack of
- 2:03Speaker 2: a better way to put it, from the United States men.
- 2:06Speaker 1: How ridiculous was that? Red guard? Explain that to the
- 2:09Speaker 1: people who just started watching soccer now, like myself.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, for your listeners, it's it's as bad
- 2:16Speaker 2: as the des Bryan twenty fourteen divisional playoff call. Oh wow,
- 2:20Speaker 2: you know he didn't complete the t catch like it's like,
- 2:24Speaker 2: hang on a minute, hang on a minute. So two
- 2:27Speaker 2: things that I think your your audience and you would
- 2:29Speaker 2: understand this. In the rules of VAR, you cannot use
- 2:35Speaker 2: slow motion or still photos unless a yellow card was given,
- 2:40Speaker 2: and you need to determine if it's a red card.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Sju gotts they didn't even call. He didn't call foul, right,
- 2:48Speaker 2: so the VAR went about their business. That technically is
- 2:52Speaker 2: against protocol. Secondly, and this is the problem I have
- 2:56Speaker 2: with video review in all sports. You have to understand
- 3:02Speaker 2: the action the game. I think flagrant fouls in the
- 3:06Speaker 2: NBA have been completely overblown. I think the process of
- 3:10Speaker 2: a catch in the NFL is completely ridiculous. And now
- 3:14Speaker 2: when you look at this Messi in the opening game
- 3:17Speaker 2: of his World Cup had an exponentially worse tackle and
- 3:22Speaker 2: that wasn't given a red And now this one is
- 3:25Speaker 2: it's a really bad call and per FIFA regulations, you
- 3:30Speaker 2: can't appeal it. So the United States is they're kind
- 3:34Speaker 2: of behind the eight ball with that call.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Crazy Taylor, how big is the drop off between flow
- 3:39Speaker 3: Balgin and the next best options for this USA team
- 3:43Speaker 3: as they look to the Belgium match.
- 3:46Speaker 2: It's not a big drop off. But I would answer
- 3:49Speaker 2: it this way. If a guy's four for five in
- 3:52Speaker 2: the World Series and yet the guys behind him statistically
- 3:58Speaker 2: is the same player, but he's on a heater. That's
- 4:00Speaker 2: the problem with this, right, So Ricardo Peppi Hajji right.
- 4:04Speaker 2: They can still play, they can score goals. I think
- 4:06Speaker 2: the United States can beat Belgium without Balagan, and I
- 4:10Speaker 2: also think this red card will galvanize the group and
- 4:13Speaker 2: give them a little bit something of an edge. But
- 4:17Speaker 2: Belgian's on an absolute heater right now. Yea, and so
- 4:21Speaker 2: that's the problem. Right. So Riccardo Peppi played really well
- 4:24Speaker 2: against Senegal in the tune up games, but Baligian's on it.
- 4:28Speaker 2: He's just on one. He's feeling himself, So that's what
- 4:31Speaker 2: you lose. But it's not a massive drop off when
- 4:36Speaker 2: you look at the profile players, they're just a little different.
- 4:39Speaker 2: But I want to keep this in mind for you
- 4:41Speaker 2: guys as well. Belgium's not Bosnia, so they're not going
- 4:44Speaker 2: to play and worry about defending the whole game. So
- 4:48Speaker 2: now Ricardo peppe comes in Hajji, right, Christian Polisic, Sergenio Deak,
- 4:53Speaker 2: there's going to be more space for them to operate.
- 4:56Speaker 2: So that's where I don't think the drop off is
- 4:59Speaker 2: as much as it would be if they were going
- 5:01Speaker 2: up against a team that was playing with a low block.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Again, Tellor FIFA says, they confirmed that there's no mechanism
- 5:09Speaker 3: to appeal a World Cup red card in their disciplinary code.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Is there any other actions that the US could do
- 5:16Speaker 3: to try to get balgainto playing that game.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Yeah, they could. They could file agrievance on the VAO
- 5:23Speaker 2: VAR protocol. But I'm gonna tell you guys right now,
- 5:26Speaker 2: it doesn't matter. Ronaldo has a two game suspension going
- 5:30Speaker 2: into the World Cup and FIFA's like, ah, we kind
- 5:33Speaker 2: of need hit in the play, so let's get rid
- 5:35Speaker 2: of that suspension. But they'll do whatever they want. And
- 5:38Speaker 2: the reality is, you guys know this in our sports,
- 5:42Speaker 2: if they open the can of worms of an appeal
- 5:45Speaker 2: that VR is gonna have VAR and then va R
- 5:48Speaker 2: is gonna have another v R and then it never stops.
- 5:50Speaker 2: So they won't appeal that.
- 5:53Speaker 1: You hate VR, don't you like you hate We're taking
- 5:56Speaker 1: we're taking some of the passion, some of the in
- 5:57Speaker 1: the moment stuff out of the game.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Right for me, Stu Gotts I love VAR for offside
- 6:04Speaker 2: and for goals, but even the Premier League has ruined
- 6:08Speaker 2: it for offside because now it's a toenail, is determined
- 6:12Speaker 2: to be offside, like we're circumcising a mosquito here, Like
- 6:16Speaker 2: we've really got to be careful here, right.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Like that Columbia goal could have been the goal of
- 6:21Speaker 1: the tournament so far and it's taken away because of
- 6:23Speaker 1: var you know.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, but not even via O. It was literally
- 6:28Speaker 2: a toenail, like what are we doing?
- 6:29Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 6:30Speaker 2: What are we doing? Taylor?
- 6:33Speaker 3: You could go back to even as early as March,
- 6:35Speaker 3: where there were still massive questions around this squad and
- 6:39Speaker 3: Pochattino selection as the manager. Through through the round of
- 6:44Speaker 3: thirty two, it seems like the USA absolutely nailed it
- 6:47Speaker 3: with the Pochatino higher, right, Yes.
- 6:51Speaker 2: But I also he'd be the first one to tell
- 6:53Speaker 2: you because he was a player himself. Players win games, right,
- 6:56Speaker 2: Players win games?
- 6:57Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 6:58Speaker 2: I mean Didier deshomp is literally on the verge of
- 7:00Speaker 2: taking his team to a third straight World Cup final.
- 7:03Speaker 2: He won a World Cup as a player. He'll tell you, listen,
- 7:05Speaker 2: you put the players in spots to succeed. The reason
- 7:08Speaker 2: why an international manager, it's such a difficult job. You're
- 7:12Speaker 2: not with these guys every single day, like Pep Guardiola
- 7:16Speaker 2: you're gonna colough. They're with those guys every day. You
- 7:18Speaker 2: could change a player. Now, what is so underestimated right
- 7:24Speaker 2: now and understated is Pocheccino. He changed the culture. So
- 7:31Speaker 2: when Palistic and Balligan and these other players didn't play
- 7:34Speaker 2: in the Gold Cup, he made it abundantly clear either
- 7:37Speaker 2: you get your act together or I'm not bringing you.
- 7:40Speaker 2: And that's where he deserves credit. But tactics in all this,
- 7:45Speaker 2: it's so difficult to implement real tactical identity and stuff
- 7:50Speaker 2: because you don't really have enough time. He's changed the culture,
- 7:55Speaker 2: he's given belief to the group. He's even given him
- 7:59Speaker 2: self belief in the United States. And my man's looking
- 8:02Speaker 2: like Russell Crow on the sideline as if he's going
- 8:04Speaker 2: to completely change the world.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Where does Malik Tillman's goal rank in terms of all
- 8:10Speaker 1: time goals in US men's soccer history.
- 8:13Speaker 2: It's really good, buddy, It's really good. And plus the
- 8:16Speaker 2: story about him having to change his boot five minutes
- 8:19Speaker 2: before that because he got stepped on and the shoe
- 8:23Speaker 2: was ruined, like, it's really really good, and it was
- 8:26Speaker 2: at a perfect time. A man down where anyone that's
- 8:30Speaker 2: played the sport knows how difficult it is to get
- 8:32Speaker 2: it up over the wall. Now, if you watch it
- 8:35Speaker 2: ste Gootts, the wall doesn't jump evenly and that's why
- 8:40Speaker 2: it goes in. But no one's going to remember that
- 8:42Speaker 2: ten years from now. I was just going to be
- 8:44Speaker 2: fifty million people saying they were there and watched it.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Yeah, is that the normal thing for a goalie to
- 8:48Speaker 1: do in that spot? Leave like an entire side of
- 8:51Speaker 1: the cage open?
- 8:53Speaker 2: Yeah, he has to, Stu Gotts, because the wall is
- 8:57Speaker 2: supposed if the wall jumps completely tilm shot doesn't go in.
- 9:02Speaker 2: So as a goalkeeper, you say, listen, if the player
- 9:06Speaker 2: can get it up over the wall that close to me,
- 9:10Speaker 2: then good on him. But if he stands a little
- 9:12Speaker 2: bit closer in the middle of the goal, now it
- 9:15Speaker 2: gives you the angle to hit it really hard to
- 9:18Speaker 2: the back post. And then on some levels, goalie, you've
- 9:21Speaker 2: got to take one side of the goal away from
- 9:24Speaker 2: the player. It's just his wall didn't do its job.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Taylor, I didn't grow up playing soccer, but recently I've
- 9:30Speaker 3: come to love the sport. And I was watching the
- 9:33Speaker 3: US against the World documentary on HBO and it gave
- 9:36Speaker 3: me more of an appreciation for this team and some
- 9:39Speaker 3: of the players on this team to where I'm now
- 9:41Speaker 3: watching Tyler Adams in the midfield and it felt like
- 9:44Speaker 3: he won them that game yesterday. What's Tyler Adams impact
- 9:48Speaker 3: on this team.
- 9:50Speaker 2: He's the most important player to the team. And I
- 9:52Speaker 2: said that two years ago, man, and I'm not saying
- 9:56Speaker 2: that to too my own I'm just saying I met
- 9:59Speaker 2: Tyler a when he was playing in MLS, when he
- 10:02Speaker 2: was that sixteen year old kid, and when Jesse Marsh
- 10:05Speaker 2: and veterans are like no, no, no, he is the guy.
- 10:10Speaker 2: I know. He's not wearing the captain's arm, man, Guys,
- 10:12Speaker 2: he's the captain, make no mistake about it. He is
- 10:15Speaker 2: the most important player to that team. He does all
- 10:20Speaker 2: of the little things well. He's an absolute dog in
- 10:23Speaker 2: the midfield. I think he has really improved from the
- 10:27Speaker 2: last World Cup to this one. He's made Tillman and
- 10:31Speaker 2: McKinney more adventurous going forward so they have more of
- 10:36Speaker 2: an impact. Tyler Adams is massive and thankfully he figured
- 10:42Speaker 2: out the injury bug after the World Cup in twenty
- 10:44Speaker 2: two because there was real concern, which is why two
- 10:47Speaker 2: years ago I said, if he's not available, and he's
- 10:49Speaker 2: not fully fit. The United States will struggle. He was massive,
- 10:54Speaker 2: he's been massive, and he'll be even better against Belgium.
- 10:58Speaker 2: You hit the nail on the head, my man. He
- 11:00Speaker 2: is the guy.
- 11:01Speaker 1: So let's use the NCAA Men's basketball tournament as an example.
- 11:06Speaker 1: If if Bosnia is a sixteen seed, okay, Belgium's what
- 11:11Speaker 1: like if Duke beat a sixteen seed last night? Belgium
- 11:14Speaker 1: is what type of team is it Michigan State? Is
- 11:16Speaker 1: it a five seed? A four seed? How much better
- 11:18Speaker 1: are they than Bosnia?
- 11:21Speaker 2: It's a good point, I would say, based on the
- 11:23Speaker 2: history of their country and the profile of the players
- 11:27Speaker 2: they developed, that they're a two or three seed in
- 11:30Speaker 2: the world.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Man.
- 11:31Speaker 2: However, in the present moment, Stu got stay or nine,
- 11:34Speaker 2: that same generation still playing. They're older, they're slower, they're
- 11:39Speaker 2: not as dynamic as I mean. Senegal completely played them
- 11:43Speaker 2: off the field for eighty four minutes and then their
- 11:45Speaker 2: goalkeeper made a Bonett move and then all of a sudden,
- 11:49Speaker 2: Senegal allows Belgium to back in that But but Belgium
- 11:52Speaker 2: was played off the field for eighty four minutes. Wow,
- 11:55Speaker 2: So to use your comparison, it's a four or five seed, okay,
- 11:59Speaker 2: and I think it was a ten seed and the
- 12:01Speaker 2: United States is probably another four or five seed if
- 12:06Speaker 2: I'm being honest the way this tournament's played out, I
- 12:09Speaker 2: think they're a top fifteen sixteen team in the world,
- 12:13Speaker 2: and they've got to beat a good team to get
- 12:15Speaker 2: to the final eight, and I think they should.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Wow Taylor, what do you think's been the biggest difference
- 12:21Speaker 3: since that friendly against Belgium where the US team loses
- 12:24Speaker 3: five to two, and Pochattino after says this was this
- 12:28Speaker 3: game was a reality check for US.
- 12:32Speaker 2: One that's starting eleven's fully fit. So I won't I
- 12:38Speaker 2: it's a great question because tendency is to say, well,
- 12:41Speaker 2: look you lost five too in March. Well, first off,
- 12:43Speaker 2: look at both rosters who played, who did, and who's
- 12:46Speaker 2: available for this round, this sixteen game, and then you
- 12:50Speaker 2: assess it. I think a better assessment of the team
- 12:52Speaker 2: in the moment is Belgium versus Senegal, US versus Senegal
- 12:57Speaker 2: in May. That's how I would That's the two teams.
- 13:01Speaker 2: You can find out tactics and ideas, but it really
- 13:04Speaker 2: doesn't do me a lot of good now in saying that,
- 13:06Speaker 2: I was very critical of Pochattino in March because he
- 13:10Speaker 2: changed the system and I was like, why would you
- 13:13Speaker 2: do that now when these are the last two games
- 13:15Speaker 2: before you have to pick your roster. And now I
- 13:18Speaker 2: know why he did it to get answers and who's
- 13:21Speaker 2: ready who's not. And when you look at who played
- 13:24Speaker 2: in that game and who didn't play in that game,
- 13:27Speaker 2: and who was called up and who's not called up, well,
- 13:29Speaker 2: now it gives you an idea of the twenty six
- 13:31Speaker 2: man roster that he called in. So that's a long
- 13:33Speaker 2: winded way of saying, this is a different animal in
- 13:37Speaker 2: the United States. In Seattle, and you guys know this
- 13:40Speaker 2: better than anyone in all the American sports fans. They
- 13:43Speaker 2: always say Seattle's the twelfth man. I can promise you
- 13:46Speaker 2: this Monday night that will be a thirteenth and fourteenth man.
- 13:49Speaker 2: That will be the best atmosphere the men have ever
- 13:52Speaker 2: played in front of in the history of the program.
- 13:55Speaker 2: And that is where I think Belgium, as good and
- 13:59Speaker 2: as experience as they are, they're going to need their
- 14:02Speaker 2: world class goalkeeper Courtois to be at his best if
- 14:06Speaker 2: they want to beat the United States.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Taylor, correct me if I'm wrong. We'll get you out
- 14:10Speaker 1: of here in a minute. Here, but correct me if
- 14:12Speaker 1: I'm wrong. You feel like this United States team is
- 14:15Speaker 1: talented enough they shouldn't win it, but they could win
- 14:18Speaker 1: the entire thing.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Right, absolutely, absolutely, Now you don't want to get listen.
- 14:24Speaker 2: It gets very difficult when you look at Okay, it
- 14:27Speaker 2: would turn into Spain, France, Argentina to win the World Cup. Yes,
- 14:31Speaker 2: if everything goes to talk, that's very difficult. But I
- 14:35Speaker 2: am also not an idiot. After watching Leicester City win
- 14:39Speaker 2: the Premier League, or watch Buster Douglas against Mike Tye,
- 14:44Speaker 2: you follow where I'm going. That's happened. Yes, a lot
- 14:47Speaker 2: of evidence sports, and you can ride this wave. Stu
- 14:50Speaker 2: Gutts to put a pin on that, to put a
- 14:53Speaker 2: bow on what you're asking. If they beat Belgium they
- 14:57Speaker 2: then play Spain, they're completely changing their They're not going
- 15:01Speaker 2: to be at all favored against Spain. That's gonna make
- 15:04Speaker 2: them a little bit looser. Yeah, and with a home
- 15:08Speaker 2: crowd behind him, you're kind of playing with house money,
- 15:10Speaker 2: my man. Yes, anything in sports can happen. So do
- 15:14Speaker 2: I expect them to win it? No? Do I think
- 15:17Speaker 2: it's possible? Yes, But I've said from the beginning, it's
- 15:20Speaker 2: quarterfinals are bust and then and then let the chips
- 15:23Speaker 2: fall where they may.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Yep, anything can happen. I mean the next one in
- 15:26Speaker 1: NBA Championship, how about that?
- 15:29Speaker 2: And also won the Premierly for the first time in
- 15:32Speaker 2: twenty two years? Why not? Up?
- 15:35Speaker 1: Are you going to the game in Seattle?
- 15:39Speaker 2: Uh? Yeah, I mean it's right in the thick of
- 15:41Speaker 2: old Taho brush. But there's a strong chance that the
- 15:45Speaker 2: Reno to Seattle flight maybe booked?
- 15:48Speaker 1: All right, the hotel and we're laughing earlier. Do you
- 15:51Speaker 1: think Tony Romo has been out there for two weeks
- 15:53Speaker 1: already getting ready for that? He takes the thing way
- 15:55Speaker 1: too seriously. Do you think he's been out there for a.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Couple of weeks? Tony Romo right now is on the
- 16:00Speaker 2: range doing lungees. Hes been there one day of this week.
- 16:09Speaker 1: But it's your year, twelve man, Me and Taylor we're
- 16:12Speaker 1: putting a well, it's not a flyer, you're one of
- 16:14Speaker 1: the favorites. We are putting some money down on you.
- 16:16Speaker 1: No pressure, We're just putting some money down on you.
- 16:18Speaker 2: I know what last year I dropped the ball. That
- 16:21Speaker 2: was when the odds were high. Perfect. Now I'm no
- 16:24Speaker 2: longer the new kid on the block.
- 16:27Speaker 1: You're gonna be distracted, though, You're gonna have.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Is it weird that I'm going to be in the
- 16:33Speaker 2: final round of looking at my phone watching that weird?
- 16:38Speaker 1: I think you should be at the World Cup game.
- 16:41Speaker 1: I shouldn't. Oh my god. All right, my man, we
- 16:46Speaker 1: appreciate it. We look forward. We know it's a busy
- 16:48Speaker 1: time for you, so I appreciate you doing this, and
- 16:50Speaker 1: we look forward to seeing you out and time come
- 16:52Speaker 1: sit with us for a little bit, all right, We'll
- 16:53Speaker 1: have some fun, see you boys, all right, Buddy doing
- 16:57Speaker 1: lunges on the range.
