- 1:19as well as for audible. Well, now it's time for today's episode of
- 1:23Nick Carter, which is a little bit of a different episode than he mentioned
- 1:26last time. But here now is the missing Herald Escort and matter what is
- 1:46it? Another case for Nick Carter, Master Detective. Yes, it's another
- 1:59case, but that's famous of all man hunters, the detective who's ability it's
- 2:02solving crime is unequaled in the history of detective Fiction Nick Carter, Master Detective,
- 2:08The Night's Curious Adventure Missing Harold Ascorn for Nick Carter and the Great Kidnapping
- 2:15Mystery. And here's Nick Carter himself to tell you the story. As you've
- 2:25probably already noticed, I'm not going to tell you the story that I announced
- 2:29last week. Instead, I want to tell you a rather different kind of
- 2:31tale, one which started as Patsy and I rang the doorbell at the rather
- 2:36magnificent home of Missus Philip Ascort, just off the upper end of the park
- 2:40at about ten thirty one morning. Yes, I'm Nick Carter. Missus Ascot's
- 2:46expecting me. Yes, mister Carter, won't you come in? Please?
- 2:50Thank you? You and the young lady will go into the living room.
- 2:53I'll tell Missus Escort you're here. Gosh, Nick, the Ascots must have
- 2:57more money than they know what to do with. Just look at it,
- 3:00asked Patsy. The Ascorts belonged to one of the oldest families in the city,
- 3:02old and conservative, rich, but never ostentatious. So I say,
- 3:07see, I wish talking about it. I think I hear Missus Ascot coming.
- 3:10Mister Carter. I want to thank you for coming so very promptly.
- 3:15I know how busy you are, but I really am in trouble, desperate
- 3:19trouble, and I don't know who else to turn to but you, why,
- 3:22missus ascot. I'll be very happy to help you if I can.
- 3:24This is my assistant, Patsy Bourne. How do you do? What you
- 3:27do now? What's wrong? It's my son, Harold, mister Carter.
- 3:31He's been kidnapped. I found this note inside my newspaper this morning. What
- 3:40does it say? Nick says, We've got your son. If you want
- 3:44him back, don't call the cops. We'll tell you what to do later.
- 3:46There's no signature. Can you tell anything by that letter, mister Carter?
- 3:51The first the handwriting is obviously disguised, half printing and half writing paper
- 3:55is good bond paper as a watermark looks like a dragon's tale. Ah.
- 4:02At top of the sheet of paper has been cut off a pair of scissors.
- 4:04Apparently the cut isn't quite even. Why do you suppose they did that?
- 4:09There was probably a letter head on it, and the writer didn't want
- 4:11the paper traced, of course, but they didn't cut quite all of the
- 4:14pinning off. I can't read what's left but later on it may help to
- 4:17identify it. It looks like hotel stationary, doesn't it me? Especially,
- 4:21that's what I was thinking. I'll have Scabby mak a round at the hotels
- 4:24and see if you can find the one that came from mister Cardiff. Do
- 4:27you think you can find my boy? I certainly hope so, missus ascort,
- 4:30and I'll do my best. But in the meantime, just sit tight
- 4:32and wait until you hear from me again, or until the kidnap gang makes
- 4:36its next move. Oh there, oh hi, and Nick, didn't take
- 4:51you long to get here. It's no time to waste in the kidnap case,
- 4:54Cobby, and never gonna be sure when the gang will get frightened or
- 4:56no, he didn't kill their victim. Now you find the same kind of
- 4:59newspaper I sure did, Nick, the same size, same watermark, and
- 5:02as near as I can tell from what's left in the kidnap note, the
- 5:05same printing at the top. Good. But what now, Nick, How
- 5:10is knowing that the paper came from here help you any If the paper came
- 5:12from here, it's quite possible that whoever wrote the kidnap note was staying here
- 5:15in the hotel at the time. Yeah, and if he was, the
- 5:16hotel register may give us a further clue. Well, but the handwriting on
- 5:19the note was disguise nick, not quite so scubby. But it's impossible to
- 5:24completely disguise any writing so that it may not be identified. Even when the
- 5:28writing is comparently completely changed, there will always be some peculiar characteristic left that
- 5:32will give it away. Oh, I didn't know that, Oh clerk,
- 5:35do you mind if we look at your register moment? Not at all?
- 5:39Here you are? Well, let's see, young ascot disappeared on Tuesday afternoon,
- 5:44and it's possible that the signature we want might be on a Sunday or
- 5:46Monday's day. Well, you know what to look for, yes, no,
- 5:49skivvy. I memorize the looks of the writing and the kidnapp note,
- 5:53and I expect to recognize any similar peculiarities inous signature. Here, No nothing
- 6:01here on a Sundays day. It's try Monday, okay? Here and here
- 6:11here look at this one James Scannett. I never heard of him, of
- 6:15course you haven't, neither of I. But look at that sea and the
- 6:19jay note. How hardly they made this signature like the kidnapped notice half written
- 6:25and half printed two, evidently the work of a man who learned to write
- 6:28late in life and a man who never writes easily. Oh I see what
- 6:31you move? No questions, Kebby. This is our man clerk. Yes,
- 6:35sir, is this James Scannerton in the hotel? James Scannett? No,
- 6:40sir, he checked out this morning. I was afraid of that.
- 6:43You recall what he looked like, medium high, sandy haired, little mustache.
- 6:46He had a crooked little finger on his right hand. I remember him
- 6:49because he answered a lot of questions last night. Thanks for well. Do
- 6:54you know him? Why? Yes, Keby, But I sent that man
- 6:57up the river three years ago for five years straight. Oh maybe he's out.
- 7:03I know a man who can tell me. I'll get him a ring
- 7:05and see. Oh who did the description fit? Nick? Sounds like Jack
- 7:09Vincent Scubby Ford. You're in a con man, an old timer at the
- 7:13business. I can't see for the world. No, pardon me for a
- 7:15minute. Oh sure, Nick, I'll wait here. Hm should turn on
- 7:28to be Jack Ris. This case may proved to be quite interesting for a
- 7:31book. Hello, Bill, how are you? This is Nick Carr,
- 7:35A fine fine, thanks, say Bill, is Jack Vincent still up at
- 7:40state prison? Oh two weeks ago? No, nothing special yet. Well
- 7:47thanks Bill, good luck, goodbye. Well what do you say? Nick
- 7:55Vincent was pardoned two weeks ago? He's our man? All right? You
- 7:59know what's a funny thing. But while you're in there phoning, a couple
- 8:01of men went by me and I heard one of them say to the other,
- 8:03I saw Vincent Grady's bar last night. Well maybe that's where he hangs
- 8:07out. You say you just heard that now, Scubby? Yeah, just
- 8:09no, that's queer. Well how do you mean me, Scubby? Things
- 8:13are going a bit two weaksily a notepaper that can be traced, the name
- 8:16and the register, the description, and now the conversation you say you overheard.
- 8:20Do you mean you think it's some kind of a frame up? Might
- 8:22be? S Well, gee, if it is Nick, you it is.
- 8:26I'm going ahead just as I was before. Just be a little bit
- 8:28more careful, that's all. Wow. They don't want me to go to
- 8:31Grady's bar. That's where I'm going. See you at the office later,
- 8:35Scuffy. And he fell for Jake hook Line and Sinker. Just like you
- 8:48said, I got a head it to you, and you told him where
- 8:50he could find me. I said it real loud, right beside that stoo
- 8:54jays, I said, I'd seen you in Grady's place. Here he's coming
- 8:56here now, Yeah, I beat it on ahead. Let you know he
- 9:00was coming good. We didn't take care of him when he gets here.
- 9:03Gee, you're off of smart Jack. Ain't no wonder I kind of go
- 9:07for you, but don't forget I onwhi one too. He's my popular chair
- 9:11for bumping off that old rat of a watchman last winter. I ain't forgot
- 9:16that. You bet you okay, Gernie cut the gap. Looks like Carter's
- 9:18coming in now. He can't see us where we're sitting. Yeah, that's
- 9:22him. Aint do I look okay in this april night? Body from people?
- 9:26Sure you look like a regular waiter? Ben they got a trade?
- 9:30Yeah yeah right here? You sure he don't know you've been a He broke
- 9:33up my k at last year, but he never seen me. Gee,
- 9:35we all got it in for him, eate we you bet we have.
- 9:39And here's where he pays up. Watch a waiter, bring me a loud
- 9:50general cook with you coming right up? Wow? Nick? Lots of familiar
- 9:56basis every No, but I really know, I wonder if men might have
- 9:58moved town. If you get the snatch and that conversation Scubby overheard, if
- 10:05you did over here, it sounds to me, yeah, sir, Oh
- 10:07thanks, yeah, give a change, thank you, sir. Wow,
- 10:15at least this ginger is cold. Doesn't make that bad. It's at the
- 10:20odd flavor to it. Though. There must be a new brand of coachs
- 10:24that mixed with it. And see that I enjoy it. It's clear isn't
- 10:33hot enough in here to make me dizzy like this? It seemed to be
- 10:39nick, you fool, you've been doped. Yeah it you've been y Yeah,
- 10:54look it it's how cold? Then you must have made it strong.
- 10:58But I did. I didn't take no changes. I put three of him
- 11:01in. I go on, Gerdy and get the car and make it fast.
- 11:03I don't want none of Carter's friends to come looking for him before we
- 11:05can get him out of here. Okay, this is the day I've been
- 11:09waiting four for three years. Oh, he don't look much like a great
- 11:24detective, does he? All tied up in gag like that? God?
- 11:26Say, don't he looks more like a trussed up chicken or a dead duck.
- 11:31And that's what he's going to be as soon as he wakes up,
- 11:33a dead duck. You mean you ain't gonna kill him now? There's no
- 11:37fun in killing them when he don't know who's doing it. I want him
- 11:41to look me in the eye when I send a bullet into his brain.
- 11:43Oh gee, Jack, I got you. Let me kill him. Nothing
- 11:46I'm doing. This is my party, private and exclusive. He got his
- 11:50guns, yeah, both of them. Hey, we leave him here in
- 11:54the backroom for now, Jack, Yeah, he won't come too for another
- 11:56couple of hours. He'll be safe here you were, Gerty, stay here
- 12:00and watch him. I got some stuff I want to take care of.
- 12:01I'll be back by the time he wakes up. Okay, here you go,
- 12:05mister master. He checked him. Ja stayed the way ready for you.
- 12:11Have I nice sleep, and keep your eye on Gertie Ben. She
- 12:15might forget and bump him off all by herself. Nicholas Carter's office, Well,
- 12:33I know he isn't. Has something else come out? Yes? Good
- 12:41heavens one hundred thousand dollars. I have no idea where he is. He
- 12:48should have been back here long ago. You better just do nothing, as
- 12:52he said, until we hear from him. He's down the call me pretty
- 12:54soon, unless unless something's happened to him. Yeah. Oh, what a
- 13:11headache that's leaves behind that. That's certainly right for being such an idiot.
- 13:16I knew what I was walking into, and I walked right into it.
- 13:20Gosh, it's dark in here. I wish I could say what h okay,
- 13:31you sent my top of a chair. Never send nobody else there,
- 13:37because you ain't gonna live no longer. I'm gonna fix you right now.
- 13:41I'm gonna so. I'd have to be so rupp with your lady, but
- 13:46it's my life for yours. You're only stunned. Now I can roofs that
- 13:52knife she had rapped before she gets her senses back. I can cut these
- 13:56roots and can get free. That's a little more. I can only see
- 14:05behind my back. Where is that knife? I don't want to be able
- 14:11to reach it now. Just ah. Now, i'd got this rope in
- 14:18my wrist a little bit more there. That's kind of for the leg ropes.
- 14:28Oh white quiet, you'd try to call for help, I'll be forced
- 14:31to kill you. You did you? I heard you coming in, so
- 14:35I sat up, stuck my legs out and tripture. He dropped your knife
- 14:37and knocked your head on the floor, and I stunned you. Then I
- 14:39found the knife cut my ropes. Now I'm getting out of here. No,
- 14:43no, no, no, you can't. Jack will kill me.
- 14:45You'll murder me before I don't try anything. Your friends overlook this little pistol
- 14:48like carrying my shoulder host to It's very small but effective. I assure you,
- 14:52what are you going to do? Why do you dope and bring me
- 14:54here? You kill me? Jack and Ben were scared you try to break
- 14:58up their plan for the kidnap job. I listened carefully. Who else is
- 15:03in this house? Now? In the next room? And when I tell
- 15:07you to call Ben? Tell him you're afraid I'm waking up. Ask him
- 15:11to come in here. But don't you want him? You want me to
- 15:13ask him to come in here? Yes? No, funny business. Now
- 15:18call him, all right, Ben, Ben, I think Nick Carr is
- 15:24waking up. You better come have a look at him. Yeah, I
- 15:35won't, Joe, now stand aside. I'm leaving here, and don't try
- 15:37to stop me. I'll be seeing you both later under different circumstances. How
- 15:54Nick, we're in the world. Have you been We've been waiting for you
- 15:56for hours? Sorry, Patsy? Anything special? Have been going on?
- 16:00Anything special? I should say? So? Missus Ascott is called five times.
- 16:03She got a note from the kidnappers telling her it would cost her one
- 16:07hundred thousand dollars to get her son back, and she's going crazy waiting for
- 16:10you to tell her what to do. Nay, Patsy, have you heard
- 16:11anything from me? Scubby? Well? Nick, what happened to you?
- 16:15Jack Benson laid a trap for me and I walked into it. Did you
- 16:18learn anything? No, Scubby, I didn't accept that. It all has
- 16:21to do with the kidnap case we're working on. Oh did you have any
- 16:23trouble? Well, it depends on what you called trouble, Scubby. More
- 16:27of that later. What about missus Ascott? She wants you to call her.
- 16:30As soon as you come in, I'll get her for you. Hi,
- 16:33Patsy, I got to move past, maybe too late. Even now
- 16:36my being there and getting away, it doesn't help any Missus Askert just a
- 16:38minute, please? She isn't Hello, Missus Ascott. So I've been held
- 16:44up where you couldn't get hold of me. What's up, Oh, mister
- 16:47Carter, I received a note from my son. It says that I'll have
- 16:51to pay his kidnappers one hundred thousand dollars if I want to get him back.
- 16:55The note also says I've got to take you off the case. He
- 16:59will be kill He says that so far they've not mistreated him, but he
- 17:03begs me to pay the money and getting free. Is the note in your
- 17:07son's handwriting? Oh? Yes, yes, I'm sure that. What shall
- 17:08I do, mister? Or does the note give you any way of getting
- 17:11in touch with him? Yes? Yes, kid says to put an ad
- 17:15in the personal column of the clarion, address the safety and let them know
- 17:18what I decide. Good, Put the ad in the clarion, tell them
- 17:23you're willing to pay the money, and ask them how they want to pay
- 17:26it. All right, mister Carter, But but how about well what they
- 17:30have to say about getting rid of you? You know what I understand,
- 17:33missus as good? Tell them in the ad that you will guarantee that I'll
- 17:37have nothing further to do with the case. But that that would be alive,
- 17:41wouldn't it, Yes, of course it would would you prefer that the
- 17:45kidnappers kill yourself? No, of course, not all right. Then put
- 17:48the ad in just as I said, and let me know the minute you
- 17:52get an answer, then we'll plan a next step. Oh, mister Carter,
- 18:04I'm so glad you've come. An answer to the ad that I put
- 18:07in the paper, just came in the morning mail. Here it is,
- 18:11thank you, and route seventy seven, B five and two tens miles north
- 18:15of Roote thirty one, there is a large, single oak tree. Great
- 18:19to say the road. It's the only tree around. Make up a bundle
- 18:22of ten, twenty and fifty dollar bills one hundred dollars more. Throw the
- 18:26bundle out at the foot of the tree this afternoon at five o'clock sharp,
- 18:30drive by it not less than twenty five miles an hour, and do not
- 18:33stop. Your son will be sent back to you tomorrow morning. You'll be
- 18:37alive if you follow directions, you'll be dead if you don't. Gosh,
- 18:42passy, where's that map I asked you to bring along? Here? It
- 18:45is, Nick Well, I still don't know how you could tell what section
- 18:48of the state we're going to need a map up, Well, Patsy When
- 18:52I went back to the gang's hideout yesterday afternoon, it was deserted. The
- 18:55only things I could find that interested me were a rough draft of the original
- 18:57kidnap note made in the back of an Endloe addrest to Jack Vincent, and
- 19:00also a timetable showing trains running to a certain part of the state. What
- 19:04part was that? The part I asked you to bring the map up?
- 19:07Very simple, very simple to you? Well, where is it here?
- 19:14Now? Let's see Route seventy seven B is here. Route three sixteen crosses
- 19:23right here. It's about forty five miles out of the city, in a
- 19:30very thinly saddled section. What shall we do about it? Mister Carter?
- 19:33Well who just exactly as the note says, have your bankers make up the
- 19:37bundle of one hundred thousand dollars and tens, twenties and fifties, take Patsy
- 19:41with you and have your chauffeur drive you up to the spot designated this note,
- 19:45throw the bundle out, and then leave the rest to meet. I'm
- 20:00sure glad it's clear today, otherwise we'd be out of lock. See anything,
- 20:03Scubby, No, not you? Hey, Nick? Do you suppose
- 20:08anything has gone wrong all I doubt it. I have entire faith in Patsy's
- 20:12ability to follow instructions. Gee, sure has started around here, is it?
- 20:18Yes? Only a few scattered housesn't bad? A little traffic? Oh
- 20:22yes, Scubby. Suppose you take over the control to the plane for a
- 20:25while while I take the glasses and have a look around. Oh sure,
- 20:27Nick, Hey are thanks got stick? Yeah? Fall set? These glasses
- 20:33are really high powered, aren't they? Hey? I think I yes,
- 20:41yes, no, they are and right on time. Are you sure this
- 20:48is the right road, James, Christmas good? This is the right road.
- 20:52Oh. I feel so much safer, mister Cardaway here. Why if
- 20:55any little thing would to go wrong, it might mean my boy's life.
- 20:59That's why I'm here and missus Askert, just to see that nothing does go
- 21:02wrong. The place you want is about a half a mile ahead, Missus
- 21:04ascort. We'll dear so soon. Oh I'm all of legitimates, Bowen,
- 21:10you have to throw the package out. I just can't do it now,
- 21:12don't you worry, Missus Askert. I'll take care of everything. Slow down
- 21:17just a little, will you please, James? Yes, miss I wish
- 21:19I knew how Nick is planning to get the money back. The gang could
- 21:22go anywhere from here and we never know where it was. Oh, I
- 21:25hope mister Carter won't do anything to winterfere with my getting my boy back.
- 21:30He's worth all the money I have. You can trust Nick to do the
- 21:33right thing. There's the tree just ahead too. Now help me up with
- 21:38the package. All right, that's it. Yeah, no, I'm gonna
- 21:42let it go out the window. Here it goes. Well, that's that.
- 21:52Oh your wonderfulness born. Did you say anybody? No, no,
- 21:56nobody, not a soul around him anywhere. I still can't see anybody this
- 22:00one who was still right by the side of the road where it fell.
- 22:03I heck, this turf cuts off of you entirely. Well, at least
- 22:07we've done our part. We've done our pot. The rest is up to
- 22:11Nick. Yep, those are Nick's ard Sheriff. Drive as close to the
- 22:27house as you can and then park your car in the bushes just off the
- 22:30road. Okay, here where's Carter? And now? Oh well, he
- 22:33went on the head to get the layout of the place. Wants to get
- 22:36his plan set by the time we get there. I don't understand how you
- 22:38know them fellers are hiding out there. You sha ain't need a owner car
- 22:42had ever been near the house. Well, I'll tell you, Sheriff,
- 22:45it's really very simple. When missus Lascart dropped the bundle of money out of
- 22:49her car this afternoon, Nick and I roll her head and Nick's plaine watching
- 22:52everything through his extra high powered field glass. Eh. Yeah, we saw
- 22:56the crooks come and pick up the money, and then we watched them beat
- 22:59it back to the farm house. They took every back road and cole PATHI
- 23:03gets fire to keep from being following, but we could see them no matter
- 23:07where they went. Yeah, all the time. The one matter they're really
- 23:10afraid it was up there over their heads watching it. Hey, that's quite
- 23:14a stunt. I've heard tell me. Nick Carter is quite a fella.
- 23:18I'm dying if I don't believe it now, Well durned. If you don't
- 23:19have better, Well we better stop here. Huh, don't there go no
- 23:25closer to the house with the car. I'll just runner off into the bushes
- 23:27here. Well, I wonder where Nick is you gotta be here anymore?
- 23:48So far, so good. I haven't seen me yet. Yeah, this
- 23:56is the wouldn't do where the boys could be if I'm right mm hmm to
- 24:00the doctor, see what's inside the room. I don't have to take a
- 24:04chance and find to the window and z for myself. Lot. I want
- 24:12to be able to slip the latch, and I know a window like this,
- 24:15this snipe will do what I think. M hm hmm. Yeah.
- 24:22Oh, my lord calls it all my longer. I guess it's safety use
- 24:26my last night here. Yeah, there he is. Oh, Harold,
- 24:32Harold, Oh quiet quiet, got a sound, keep you pretty quiet?
- 24:36You all right? Yeah, quite a pretty bad cold yesterday though with who
- 24:41are you? You're not one of the kings. I'm not one of the
- 24:45gangs. I'm a Nick Catterick. Yes, gee, I've heard of you.
- 24:48You're gonna save me, huh, That's just what I'm gonna do.
- 24:52And I'll get these ropes off your on the lights versus h that way.
- 24:57Are I feel better? Gosh? Yes, I'll see if you can stand
- 25:03up. Well, it's not very easy yet, but that'll be all right,
- 25:07good boy. We got to get you out of here pronto before one
- 25:11of the game comes up to have a look at you. All right,
- 25:12how do we get out out of the window? Same as I came in.
- 25:15Come on now, quiet, okay, what have you seen, mister
- 25:19Carter? I'm out the window under the roof. Easy now, easy,
- 25:25Yeah, that's the boy gee Jack out here, can't see anything hardly.
- 25:30Just follow me. There's a post in the corner of the porch. We
- 25:33can slide down. I came up it careful now here it is here we
- 25:40are, okay. I'll come right behind you. You go ahead, mister
- 25:44Carter, Not mister Carter, Harold, just call me Nick. Gosh,
- 25:47Nick, am I gonna have something to tell a fellas when I get back
- 25:51home. All right, he'll come. Hey, boy, gee, that
- 25:56was easy, wasn't it? All right? Son? Sure, let's get
- 26:00going away from here? All right? My friend's scubby in the sheriff want
- 26:03to be over there on the edge of the brush. Hey, is that
- 26:07you, nick Yescubby? And I have the boy too, suffer and catfish?
- 26:11Mister Carter, how on Heaven's names you can get him out of there?
- 26:12Are getting caught? It was easy. Nick's a good detective. I
- 26:17bet he can do anything. Well. Thanks for the plug, Harold.
- 26:19Now here's my idea. Are the three of them still in the living room
- 26:22where they were a few minutes ago. Yeah, I just took a look
- 26:25and they still there. What's your idea, Carter, Well, this is
- 26:27it. I think Harold is still tied up nice and snug in a static
- 26:30room. Now. If they should happen to hear him out here in front
- 26:33of the house, they've probably come rushing out to see what's up, wouldn't
- 26:34they? Sure? Go on, Well, I don't want any shooting if
- 26:37I can help it. Somebody might get hurt. So you and I will
- 26:40stand one on each side of the front door, Scubby, while the sheriff
- 26:42goes round to the back door ready to come up from behind him, and
- 26:45Harold will stand out here in front of the house and shout good and loud.
- 26:48They'll come out to see what's what, and we will poke our guns
- 26:52in their backs. No shooting, no trouble, all nice and simple.
- 26:55Gee, that's well. What'll I yell? Nick? Oh? Whatever comes
- 27:00to your head? Anything at all? Okay? Sure, yep, sounds
- 27:03nice and simple. If it works, well, here goes rear guard.
- 27:07Come on, sco and get your guns ready. Okay, and hell,
- 27:08if anything goes wrong, you run for the woods. They'll never find you
- 27:11out there. At a back night like this. Okay, Nick, when
- 27:15do I yell count five slowly? That'll give Scubby and me time to get
- 27:18into a position beside the door. Okay, one, two, three,
- 27:26four, five? Winds will in the mounted yet me? Whoa? What
- 27:33the little doing off here? He gets your hands out of my past.
- 27:34Don't drive meto beer guns. We've got you surrounded, Nick Carter, I'll
- 27:37just keep those hands in the air, Vincent, All right, Scotty,
- 27:41get the guns, okay, Nick, Only one on them and two on
- 27:48our friend Jack. I here, stop it. Why this girl trying to
- 27:52skip out the back way? So ill brought along? He blows us outfit.
- 27:55I'll see she does. She was the one who watched me while the
- 27:57men went out for the money. Well, looks like we got everything go
- 28:02on it. It certainly does share everything but the ransom money, which must
- 28:04be here in the house somewhere. Nickon, Can I hold a gun on
- 28:07one of them? Right? Sure? Son? Yeah? Take Jack's gun
- 28:11and keep it pointed right at him all the time. Hey, Cotter,
- 28:14don't I kid have that gun. You don't know nothing about guns. It
- 28:17might go wolf and somebody get hurt, quite right, Vincent, But would
- 28:19it interest you to know that? I wouldn't care if it did. As
- 28:22far as I am concerned. Kidnappers are pretty filthy things, the lowest of
- 28:26the low. Oh, mister Carter, how can I ever repay you for
- 28:40what you've done for me and my boy? I'm very happy that we were
- 28:44able to get the boy back for you, Missus Ascot, and the money
- 28:45too. Please tell me how much I owe you, mister Carter. I
- 28:49want to send you a check at once, a big one. You owe
- 28:52me nothing, Missus. But mister Carter, you really want to repay me,
- 28:56I suggest that you put at least an extra ten thousand dollars the war
- 29:00bonds in this fourth Warlorn Drive and give the bonds to the Associated Boys Clubs
- 29:04of the city. I can think of no better way to spend money right
- 29:08now. Buying the bonds helps the boys who are fighting for us today,
- 29:15and giving the bonds to the Boys Clubs helps the boys of tomorrow. It's
- 29:19a wonderful combination. This has been another of the strange adventures off Nick Carter,
- 29:41Master Detective, which are brought to you regularly at the same time by
- 29:45W O R Mutual. What can you tell us about next week's story.
- 29:49Nick, Well, all I'm going to tell you about it is this.
- 29:52There's such a weird and unusual case that, for the only time in my
- 29:56life, I was almost compelled to believe that vampires really do exist. I
- 30:00call it Death after Dark or the Mystery of the Vampire Killings. So long,
- 30:03So long, Nick, See you next week. In the strange adventure
- 30:07you have just heard, Nick Carter was impersonated by Lon Clark, Patsy by
- 30:11Helen Choate, Scubby by John Kine. Original music was played by Lou White.
- 30:18The entire production was written and directed by Jack McGregor. Next week,
- 30:33at the same time, listen to another curious experience of Nick Carter entitled Death
- 30:37after Dark or Nick Carter and the Mystery of the Vampire Killings. This story
- 30:48is a copyrighted feature of Street and Smith Publications, Incorporated. The Return of
- 30:52Nick Carter is broadcast in the studios of w o RN is broadcast over most
- 30:56of these stations every week. This is mutual welcome back. Well. Our
- 31:17cautious team of kidnappers apparently thought that the plane that was travel following them back
- 31:26to their hotout was just a coincidence and there was nothing like the scene after
- 31:32the kidnappers were caught to remind us that we weren't listening to something from the
- 31:37twenty first century. Speaking of that, we turned a listener comments and feedback,
- 31:42and we have a question from Lexi, who says, what are you
- 31:49going to do another Sherlock Holmes episode? Thanks for the question, Lexi.
- 31:56We will continue to play video theater programs and that features Sherlock Holmes. However,
- 32:08we are done with the radio version unless somebody comes up with some lost
- 32:14old time radio versions of these programs, and if we do play it again,
- 32:21I would be happy to entertain playing Sherlock Holmes again. But Lexi's not
- 32:25alone and missing Sherlock Holmes. We'd also received an email from Christine who says,
- 32:34as usual, the so is awesome. I just wanted to give my
- 32:36two cents about Nick Carter. It's got to be the worst old time detective
- 32:40of you've played, really the police Riley, excuse me. The policeman is
- 32:45so stupid that I keep wondering who he paid to get his job. Also,
- 32:50everybody's opinion of Nick as the world's great detective, the greatest detective ever
- 32:54is just annoying. Now, maybe it's because I'm a diehard Sherlock fan the
- 33:00last series. Notwithstanding that, I find this claim to be so offensive.
- 33:04But I have yet to be impressed by Nick. Love the show as always,
- 33:07but can't wait for Nick Carter to be over. Well, I appreciate
- 33:13your opinion. We have quite a ways to go with Nick Carter about two
- 33:17more years, and there are shows that I don't like. I felt like
- 33:24one show that we won't play is the syndicated version of Final Vans. We'll
- 33:30play some of the other episodes that were aired over NBC, but the syndicated
- 33:37version, I thought the police were just too incredibly dumb. I don't quite
- 33:43get the feeling about this series. In no way are Nick Carter cases as
- 33:50good from a mystery standpoint as Sherlock Holmes. There's something to be said for
- 33:55his longevity. There were more than one thousand stories about Nick Carter in Street
- 34:02and Smith in a magazine that ran for a total of thirty two years.
- 34:08Clearly there was something there that kept audiences reading and also audience is listening to
- 34:15the radio show. While Nick Carter rarely shows amazing genius, he shows cunning
- 34:22and dairy and is the toughest guy this side of the hard boiled eyes,
- 34:28and added all that in today he managed to work a PSA into collecting his
- 34:35fee. So I understand folks that disagree. I think this is a good
- 34:39series and I hope it'll grow on some listeners who are a little reluctant about
- 34:44it. But if not, that's why we have the other five days a
- 34:46week. But as always, Christine, thanks so much for your comments,
- 34:50truly appreciated. All right, well, that will do it for today.
- 34:54We'll be back tomorrow with yours truly, Johnny Doller and our final episode of
- 35:00Doctor Tim. And next week it's another episode with Nick Carter. Send your
