Transcript
- 0:00This is how the art of the deal starts.
- 0:03Most people are surprised by the way I work.
- 0:05I play it very loose.
- 0:06I don't carry a briefcase.
- 0:08I try not to schedule too many meetings.
- 0:11I leave my door open.
- 0:12You can't be imaginative or entrepreneurial if you got too much structure.
- 0:16I prefer to come to work each day and just see what develops.
- 0:21There is rarely a day with fewer than 50 calls and often it runs to over a hundred.
- 0:26In between I have at least a dozen meetings.
- 0:29The majority occur on the spur of the moment and few of them last longer than 15 minutes.
- 0:35I rarely stop for lunch.
- 0:37I leave my office by 6.30.
- 0:39But I frequently make calls from home until midnight and all weekend long.
- 0:43It never stops and I wouldn't have it any other way.
- 0:46I try to learn from the past but I plan for the future by focusing exclusively on the
- 0:51present.
- 0:52That's where the fun is.
- 0:53And if it can't be fun, what's the point?
- 0:57Okay so here we see there's a few lessons we can walk away with just with this introduction.
- 1:04First is that it's important to keep your schedule flexible.
- 1:09You don't want to have too much things that are blocked in it ahead of time because the
- 1:15world is dynamic and you want to be open to serendipitous encounters.
- 1:25We also see that he keeps his meetings short and to the point.
- 1:29That way he's able to get a lot of things done without wasting time.
- 1:35He mentions that he takes in and gets a lot of calls meaning make time for a lot of input
- 1:43and a lot of output.
- 1:46And the way he does this is to go very short and sweet and to the point and by not having
- 1:53too rigid of a structure.
- 1:55And finally although he looks at the past to improve, he is focused on the present in
- 2:03order to plan for the future.
- 2:05And if you see all the new trends and opportunities, their hints are in the present more than they
- 2:11are in the past.
- 2:13In a way what he's saying here is that the best way to plan and prepare for the future
- 2:19is to focus on the present more than on the past.
- 2:25And concretely saying what can you do right now to make things better for example in a
- 2:31given situation.
- 2:32He refers to that in a book he wrote later on called Never Give Up.
- 2:36So to summarize, keep your schedule flexible, keep your meetings short and to the point,
- 2:41try for a high level of input and output and plan for the future by focusing on the present.
