- 0:00We are in the shop and a lot of people always say, hey, Wallace,
- 0:03you got all that NASCAR money, Where's your team at?
- 0:08Let's do a 360. Charlie, this is the team.
- 0:13It's a me or as we used to say, Moi.
- 0:16That's all there is. I had a guy roll up here one one
- 0:19day. He didn't like me, had enough
- 0:22nerves to come up the driveway. I had I had the door open.
- 0:25He's looking around. I said, Sir, can I help you?
- 0:32He says, where's all your help? I said, it's just me.
- 0:35This man now this my hands on the Bible.
- 0:37This is an accurate story. The man was so disappointed that
- 0:41I didn't have all this NASCAR help.
- 0:43I said, buddies, Wallace's grew up building our own race cars.
- 0:46We do everything ourselves. Now.
- 0:48You'll see my my help with me on the weekends.
- 0:51And there was a time when I lived in North Carolina that
- 0:54Billy Smith or Joey Walsh, you know, they were my crew chiefs.
- 0:57But it's me and that's it. There's nobody else.
- 1:01So with that being said, I put all the motors in and out of the
- 1:05car by myself. Hey, Walls, without our NASCAR
- 1:09money, you are handsome. I do that for you.
- 1:13I make myself laugh. All right, so one of the other
- 1:17questions I get all the time was how much these motors cost.
- 1:23OK, so this is a very high end modified motor.
- 1:27So this motor did not cost what I'm going to tell you, but these
- 1:33motors can cost anywhere from listen, before you all start
- 1:37being smart ass to me, you you're going to spend what
- 1:40you're going to spend on your motor and I'm going to spend
- 1:42what I spend on my motor. You can get a used motor, cobble
- 1:46it together, get a set of heads from a buddy.
- 1:49Hey buddy, how much you want from them heads and you know
- 1:52they're welded up. I get that and I respect that,
- 1:55but the herminator don't operate that way.
- 1:58I, I worked hard my whole life to get to where I'm at.
- 2:01So these motors can cost anywhere for me, anywhere from
- 2:0618,000 to 35,000. So once again, these motors
- 2:12right here can cost 18,000 to 35,000 and you say well, why the
- 2:18price difference? Well, if you get a 13° head, you
- 2:22know, 1113, the less degree, the more power and the more
- 2:26volatile. This is a 23° head motor.
- 2:29So you know, the less degree, the heavier the heads are, the
- 2:33more power it makes. But the heads get heavier,
- 2:37right? If you go 11 degree, 30, all
- 2:39those degrees, the less degree, the heavier the head.
- 2:42I want a light motor. So that's when you say, well,
- 2:45why the price difference? You know, what degree headed
- 2:48motor do you want? So that's why 18 to $35,000,
- 2:53depending on how much horsepower you want.
- 2:56I want just enough horsepower. I don't want all that
- 2:58horsepower. So this is a, a Daryl Hoffman
- 3:02motor. You're saying who's Daryl
- 3:04Hoffman? Well, this is Nick Hoffman's
- 3:06dad. And Daryl built my motors when I
- 3:11first started racing in 1986. So Daryl Hoffman, a very good
- 3:15friend of mine, so is Nick Hoffman and and Daryl Hoffman
- 3:18just I got lucky. Daryl was back here and he
- 3:22delivered this motor. Now, this is a Hoffman motor
- 3:24built out of Morrisville, NC Charlie, let me show him my Chad
- 3:28Mullins motor. All right, White City, Illinois.
- 3:32So we're ready to go. We set all the loads on the
- 3:37springs. We've checked the tow.
- 3:39Let me see. Here, take this little bolt off.
- 3:45But I want to show you this motor.
- 3:48Hey, Wallace, let me see your motor, man.
- 3:53So there you go. This is a motors motor, Charlie.
- 3:55Go ahead and get down in there showing it off.
- 3:58So, yeah, I'm not a I'm not afraid to show you anything
- 4:09because pretty much we all kind of got the same thing.
- 4:11You know, It's just where you get your speed and your race
- 4:14cars in your shocks, your springs, what they call the
- 4:17weights on your springs. But anyway, this is a this is
- 4:22the motor I'm going to start the year out with.
- 4:24And listen, I understand that none of you can have two motors.
- 4:30I get that. Don't don't jump my ass.
- 4:32OK? I'm sorry.
- 4:34I used to have three motors and before speed week started, I had
- 4:37two people call me up, actually, Clayton Bryant and Ricky Lemons.
- 4:42Herman, we can't get a motor. We want to go to speed weeks
- 4:44evolution. I said I got a wonderful Mullins
- 4:47motor and sold it to him at a right price.
- 4:51Part of my right sizing was going to two motors.
- 4:53Herman is not the type of person.
- 4:55Now listen, I know local racers when they blow motor out, I get
- 4:59that and you can see my face. I, you know, I'm very, very
- 5:02Privy. I'm very humble to that
- 5:04situation. But Herman don't like to be off
- 5:066 months, you know what I mean? So I work extra hard and I was
- 5:11trying to have a spare motor. I do my very best.
- 5:14Listen, I changed my oil and my oil filter every four races
- 5:17because not because of the oil. My my mobile one oil is the best
- 5:22oil around. I run zero 50.
- 5:24Yes, zero 50 is a very good oil, but the reason I changed my oil
- 5:29every four races is because of the dirt.
- 5:31Now listen, I got Walker air filters.
- 5:34They're the best filters in America and I clean these
- 5:37things. I wash them and then I put this
- 5:39over. But the reason I changed oil
- 5:42every four races is that dirt, some of that dirt's going to get
- 5:46in all right. It's going to.
- 5:48And the only reason I changed my oil is not because we're ruining
- 5:52it. It's just because it's that
- 5:54oil's going to get a little dirty when you race dirt.
- 5:57Now, if you're an asphalt racer, probably go a lot longer.
- 6:00But here's there's an old saying, brother Rusty taught me
- 6:04better safe than sorry. So anyway, my headers are built
- 6:11by my childhood friend, the Schoenfeld family, Don, the
- 6:16owner, Doug and Dennis. I run Schoenfeld headers.
- 6:20I run Mullins or Hoffman motors. I now listen when I when I
- 6:30started racing, you know. Hey Herman, can you build a
- 6:33motor? No, I know my limit.
- 6:35Now, however, I can dress a short block.
- 6:37I can change valve springs. And once again, I do everything
- 6:41myself. And the reason I remind
- 6:43everybody I do myself, I do everything myself is because
- 6:46there's an education. People saw me on TV and they
- 6:49just, they got this vision that he got an AT car money.
- 6:53And so it's it's important for me to let you know that we did a
- 6:57360. It's just me in the shop.
- 6:59So I put the motors in. If I got a just valves, I just
- 7:03the valves myself. I checked the timing.
- 7:06One of my most prideful moments was Chad Mullins, I don't know,
- 7:10six years ago, he said, who plumbed this car means run the
- 7:15hoses. And Buddha was helping me at the
- 7:18time. Buddha looked at Chad Moles
- 7:20said, Herman does all that. Oh, Chad Moles went.
- 7:24I said, damn, Chad, I'm still educating you to go back through
- 7:27our history. So anyway, really, that's just
- 7:30kind of a story and I hope you enjoyed it.
- 7:34I gave you the price of the motors.
- 7:36I give you the degree of the headers.
- 7:37And why the price difference motors, headers, timing, you
- 7:44know what I do to maintenance? You know, we even take the
- 7:48radiator out every once in a while.
- 7:50I take the radiator out about every 15 races.
- 7:53I flush the dirt out of the radiators.
- 7:55So all right, love you all hope you enjoyed their our motor
- 7:58video. Thank you all so much and
- 8:00remember, please subscribe and like.
