- 1:34Jennifer Johnson: Joe is the owner of Joe the Home Pro, which is an award-willing-winning, fully licensed, bonded and insured home inspection company.
- 1:42Jennifer Johnson: And he originally moved to Southwest Florida in 2011.
- 1:47Jennifer Johnson: And for more than 15 years, he has dedicated his professional life to helping others through his career in the hospitality industry.
- 1:54Jennifer Johnson: The idea to launch Joe the Home Pro was Joe's response to stories that he heard about people being taken advantage of.
- 2:00Jennifer Johnson: And he sought an opportunity to bring a more professional and trustworthy and customer-focused home service business here to Southwest Florida.
- 2:09Jennifer Johnson: Welcome, Joe.
- 2:10Jennifer Johnson: Thanks for having me.
- 2:11Jennifer Johnson: Absolutely.
- 2:12Jennifer Johnson: Good to be back.
- 2:12Jennifer Johnson: Tongue tied there for a minute.
- 2:14Jennifer Johnson: There's lots to say about you.
- 2:15Joe Nugent: Well, I, you know, I have a lot of people I pay a lot of money to say good things about me.
- 2:20Jennifer Johnson: Wow.
- 2:20Jennifer Johnson: Well, you have had an impressive business or you have an impressive business, and I've watched it grow.
- 2:28Jennifer Johnson: And you have taken, in my opinion, slow and steady growth, that that growth model.
- 2:36Jennifer Johnson: I want you to share with our listeners your experience with growing your business in that manner.
- 2:43Jennifer Johnson: You know, why did you choose to not just grow as fast as you could, as quickly as you could, or I should say as big as you could, as fast as you could?
- 2:52Jennifer Johnson: Why did you choose that approach?
- 2:54Jennifer Johnson: What was it that motivated about that that uh process with you?
- 2:58Joe Nugent: Because I'm a scaredy cat.
- 3:00Jennifer Johnson: I call it nervous Nelly.
- 3:02Jennifer Johnson: That's how that's my nickname, Nervous Nelly of Nick.
- 3:04Joe Nugent: I'm scared of success.
- 3:05Joe Nugent: I mean, I look back on my hospitality career, right?
- 3:07Joe Nugent: So I was at that hotel as director of sales and marketing for almost eight years.
- 3:11Joe Nugent: And when COVID happened, that's when I made the full-time switch into my home inspection company, which thank God I've been building for five years.
- 3:18Jennifer Johnson: You were building that for five years before you quit.
- 3:21Joe Nugent: Before, yeah.
- 3:21Joe Nugent: Well, I got furloughed.
- 3:23Jennifer Johnson: Moonlighting.
- 3:24Joe Nugent: And I was like, thank God, because I was getting ready to put in my notice, anyways.
- 3:27Joe Nugent: And um, I gotta tell you, it's like anyone that has a full-time job that's building the side hustle.
- 3:33Joe Nugent: They never know when to make that jump.
- 3:35Joe Nugent: I just talked to a home inspector this morning about this exact topic, which is so funny.
- 3:39Joe Nugent: And I said, I wish I would have done it five years previously.
- 3:43Joe Nugent: Because if you think about it, how much could you build your business if you're working 50 to 60 hours on it, as opposed to me making some old guys rich?
- 3:52Joe Nugent: That's all I did.
- 3:53Jennifer Johnson: Yeah.
- 3:54Joe Nugent: And I was like, this is so dumb.
- 3:55Joe Nugent: So then when I jumped and I was like, oh my God, this is why did I not do this earlier?
- 4:00Joe Nugent: It was absolutely a mindset shift.
- 4:03Joe Nugent: Because when I first started this business, I was like, okay, I make $115,000 at the hotel.
- 4:09Joe Nugent: If I could make like $150,000 doing my own thing, man, that would be really cool.
- 4:14Joe Nugent: And then like six months into it, I'm like, that's stupid.
- 4:17Joe Nugent: I don't want to be doing home inspections.
- 4:19Joe Nugent: Like, I want to grow and scale this thing, and I want to make millions and bring in millions and really live like a life.
- 4:25Joe Nugent: Like I just I'm not a solopreneur.
- 4:27Joe Nugent: That's what I found out also pretty quickly on.
- 4:30Joe Nugent: So for me, the mindset of getting over that hurdle of saying, oh, it just needs to be me.
- 4:36Joe Nugent: I want to be a solopreneur, the mindset of going, I just need this, whatever this is, and that's gonna, you know, kind of like make me happy, those were all just little things.
- 4:47Joe Nugent: So the slow and steady thing was not, I mean, it was by choice, but then I'm like, oh, this is a really bad idea, right?
- 4:54Joe Nugent: And so that's one of the things I've had challenges with.
- 4:57Jennifer Johnson: So I want to go back to you worked for a company for five years while growing your business.
- 5:02Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 5:03Jennifer Johnson: What was going through your head at that point why you didn't make that leap earlier?
- 5:07Jennifer Johnson: You said you were scared.
- 5:09Jennifer Johnson: So I know I've talked about fear before.
- 5:12Jennifer Johnson: And is that was that all part of it?
- 5:15Jennifer Johnson: Like, what were you scared of?
- 5:17Joe Nugent: I think it was the financial, right?
- 5:19Joe Nugent: Like I coming off a divorce.
- 5:20Joe Nugent: I got my kids were really little, and I'm like, oh man, I can't like jump into this now.
- 5:25Joe Nugent: Like, what kind of, you know, sure how do you get things going?
- 5:28Joe Nugent: And so I just think like I didn't know what I didn't know.
- 5:31Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 5:31Joe Nugent: And luckily, uh, I belonged to a mentor organization, the accelerators organization that I've talked about on the show in the past.
- 5:37Joe Nugent: And thank God I had Sean, Thomas, and the other mentors there to help me and get me out of this.
- 5:43Joe Nugent: And I'll never forget the day I was in Nashville at Sean's place in Franklin.
- 5:48Joe Nugent: And I go, I said to a group of people on the patio, and I said, I think it's time for me to do this full time.
- 5:54Joe Nugent: I'm gonna put it in my notes.
- 5:55Joe Nugent: They're like, oh, thank God, it's about time.
- 5:57Joe Nugent: Jesus, we've been waiting four years to hear you say that, right?
- 6:00Joe Nugent: So it was just because I had the right people in my corner.
- 6:03Jennifer Johnson: Sure.
- 6:03Jennifer Johnson: I have talked about this before, how we can't see some, I shouldn't say we can't see it.
- 6:09Jennifer Johnson: Everybody else around you can see the obvious that you were meant to take a certain path or you were meant to step into something.
- 6:17Jennifer Johnson: But we being the people in it, right?
- 6:21Jennifer Johnson: We go, we we don't see it, or we choose to ignore it because somebody else or something else is holding us back.
- 6:29Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 6:30Jennifer Johnson: Right.
- 6:30Jennifer Johnson: And for you, it was that fear that yeah, like how do I do this?
- 6:34Joe Nugent: Right?
- 6:35Joe Nugent: Like, how does this work?
- 6:36Joe Nugent: Like, this is crazy.
- 6:37Joe Nugent: And everyone else told me I was crazy.
- 6:39Joe Nugent: Like, why are you building this company?
- 6:41Joe Nugent: Like, you make really good money and good benefits.
- 6:43Joe Nugent: And I was like, Well, you don't know, this job may not be here forever.
- 6:46Joe Nugent: Q COVID, right?
- 6:48Joe Nugent: That job went away.
- 6:49Joe Nugent: Right.
- 6:49Joe Nugent: So I think you know, that was that was a big, uh, a big hurdle for me to clear.
- 6:54Joe Nugent: But I also think like the one part of your question that was really good is, you know, why did I want to take slow and steady?
- 7:01Joe Nugent: So one of the things that I realized, and this is part of like what you said, like in your bio about me, is seeing that there's a hole in the market, seeing that there's a need, like people are getting taken advantage of, whatever.
- 7:11Joe Nugent: And so for me, I don't understand in Southwest Florida how people build and scale uh service-based companies and then they forget the service aspect.
- 7:19Joe Nugent: Right.
- 7:19Joe Nugent: And so this is like my number one thing because everyone that told me is like, oh, don't get too big, you're gonna lose your service.
- 7:24Joe Nugent: And I was like, I could rattle off six companies right now that did that.
- 7:28Joe Nugent: I'm not gonna be one of them.
- 7:29Joe Nugent: So I was then determined to grow, build, and scale a service-based company with keeping our number one company pillar, relentless service, at the top of everything we do.
- 7:39Joe Nugent: And knock on one, we've been able to accomplish that so far.
- 7:42Jennifer Johnson: So I'm glad you brought that up.
- 7:43Jennifer Johnson: How do you do that?
- 7:44Jennifer Johnson: I know that's not really the precipice of our conversation today, but it does go, it ties it all in with your business.
- 7:51Jennifer Johnson: And and I know my listeners are gonna wonder, how did he keep that at the top of his list with his company when other people are like, you can't scale your business and and you know make everybody happy is essentially what they were telling you.
- 8:05Jennifer Johnson: Yeah.
- 8:05Jennifer Johnson: How did you do it?
- 8:06Joe Nugent: It's all through the right.
- 8:07Jennifer Johnson: How are you doing it?
- 8:08Joe Nugent: It's all through the right people, right?
- 8:10Joe Nugent: So it's um it's amazing when you're out there networking with people and you talk to people about your company and and you just, you know, they ask questions and you're kind of like, you know, you're you're you're fired up.
- 8:20Joe Nugent: Right.
- 8:20Joe Nugent: You're giving them really strong stuff because you love what you love your little passion project, like I call it.
- 8:25Joe Nugent: Um, and it's incredible how many people will be looking out for you, going, hey, I know somebody, I think they would be a really good fit for you.
- 8:31Joe Nugent: Like right now, I have the exact opposite of what everyone else in Southwest Florida has.
- 8:37Joe Nugent: I have seven people right now that are banging down my door to come work for my company.
- 8:42Joe Nugent: I don't have enough business.
- 8:43Joe Nugent: It's it's the reverse for every single other company I know down here.
- 8:47Joe Nugent: Wow.
- 8:47Joe Nugent: They have too much business and not enough people.
- 8:50Joe Nugent: And so I have the exact opposite, which I'm very thankful for.
- 8:53Joe Nugent: And I say that very, very like respectfully to everyone.
- 8:56Joe Nugent: So for me, it's about putting myself out there and finding the right people, and I'm not gonna put the warm body out there.
- 9:02Joe Nugent: Like I can't tell you.
- 9:03Joe Nugent: I have a laundry list of people that have come to me and said, Oh, I want to work for you.
- 9:07Joe Nugent: And I was hiring, and I was like, Oh, thanks, but we're all set because they're not the right people.
- 9:12Joe Nugent: And so you build and scale and grow in any, I don't care if you're in Southwest Florida or if you're in Cleveland, Ohio, or Seattle, Washington, by putting the right people in place, giving them the right tools to do the right job, and let them go and do their thing.
- 9:25Joe Nugent: But I think our company pillars are absolutely what grounds us.
- 9:31Joe Nugent: And it's like, if you don't buy into these four company pillars, you're not gonna be a long-term fit.
- 9:37Jennifer Johnson: What are your four company pillars now, though?
- 9:39Joe Nugent: Oh, it's very interesting you asked that question.
- 9:40Joe Nugent: Oh, wow, I mean, look at my cheat sheet.
- 9:42Joe Nugent: Yeah, that was good.
- 9:43Jennifer Johnson: Here's the baseball throw me a pitch.
- 9:46Joe Nugent: I need all the help I can get.
- 9:47Joe Nugent: So relentless service is number one for us, unwavering ethics and morals is number two.
- 9:52Joe Nugent: Number three is intentional communication, and number four is community-centric.
- 9:56Joe Nugent: And all of those play a part in who I am and in our community and the people that we try to have.
- 10:02Joe Nugent: So, like on day one, when we bring on a new team member, here's our here's the four company pillars, here's the explanation on each of them.
- 10:10Joe Nugent: Now sign here because if something happens down the road and they're not adhering to one of those, I'm gonna be like, wait, remember when you came on board and you signed this?
- 10:17Joe Nugent: Right.
- 10:18Joe Nugent: This is what this is all about.
- 10:19Jennifer Johnson: Intentional communications.
- 10:21Jennifer Johnson: What is that?
- 10:22Joe Nugent: So for us, because we're in a technical service-based business and it can get really convoluted and you can use some really big words, right?
- 10:32Joe Nugent: We talk to people as if you and I are having this conversation.
- 10:35Joe Nugent: So on a home inspection, it can there could be a lot of crazy terminology that someone throws out.
- 10:41Joe Nugent: So we talk to people as if like they are like in kindergarten, not because they're dumb, but because they we want to make sure they understand.
- 10:48Joe Nugent: And so for us, it's all about communication during and after an inspection of making sure they understand what the report says.
- 10:55Joe Nugent: But it also speaks to before that.
- 10:58Joe Nugent: And it's like my team knows that if there's someone that emails us, calls us, or texts us, and we don't get back to them within a matter of minutes, I'm gonna lose it.
- 11:07Joe Nugent: So it's like you like if someone needs something, we drop whatever we're doing, especially if we're having an internal conversation and that takes precedence.
- 11:16Joe Nugent: And it's a matter of clearly stating to them here's what your expectations are on the inspection, here's what's gonna happen, here's how we walk you through it.
- 11:25Joe Nugent: And so intentional communication for us is just being crystal clear on every single thing we're doing.
- 11:31Joe Nugent: Because look at the good service-based companies in Southwest Florida.
- 11:35Joe Nugent: They show up on time, they do a good job, they say what they're gonna do, and they charge a fair price.
- 11:40Joe Nugent: It's a very simple formula on how to become a multimillionaire in Southwest Florida, right?
- 11:44Joe Nugent: Right, which I still have not am.
- 11:46Joe Nugent: But one of these days.
- 11:47Jennifer Johnson: You're working on it, still.
- 11:49Joe Nugent: The formula is there, the formula is there, I gotta tell you.
- 11:51Joe Nugent: So that's what intentional communication is, though, to us.
- 11:55Jennifer Johnson: So, so that that all of that kind of parlays into the the advantages, right?
- 12:02Jennifer Johnson: Of being of doing this slow and steady growth, because you can put more time and attention into making sure that you have the that your team that you have is the right team and they're following those core values, or you call them pillars of your company.
- 12:20Joe Nugent: Correct.
- 12:21Joe Nugent: Correct.
- 12:21Joe Nugent: And you know, it's interesting is as we're talking about this, I'm just thinking about the slow and steady, right?
- 12:27Joe Nugent: Because we're in the process of moving into the Venice, Sarasota, St.
- 12:32Joe Nugent: Pete, Tampa market.
- 12:33Joe Nugent: And so we're finding people there.
- 12:35Joe Nugent: I just had uh a week ago, two people reach out to me about Orlando.
- 12:40Joe Nugent: So we're gonna start to maybe move over there.
- 12:42Joe Nugent: And so Joe, uh as in Joe the Home Pro, I want to own kind of like Orlando and like to like the Southwest.
- 12:49Joe Nugent: Our licensing division has finally taken off, and we brought on our first licensee in Lynchburg, Virginia.
- 12:56Joe Nugent: And again, you want to talk about slow and steady.
- 12:59Joe Nugent: I have turned down nine people for our licensing division.
- 13:03Joe Nugent: I'm talking, we're we're talking a lot of money that I could have been bringing in that I said no to because they weren't the right fit.
- 13:10Joe Nugent: They weren't gonna be successful, they weren't the right fit, didn't have the right qualities, whatever it might be.
- 13:16Joe Nugent: And so for us, we're gonna, as we go across the country and as we license and as we talk to potential home inspectors, we want the right people because it's our job to make sure they're successful.
- 13:26Joe Nugent: Right.
- 13:26Joe Nugent: It does me no good to put a Joe the home pro in Denver, Colorado, and for that individual to flame out in eight months.
- 13:34Joe Nugent: Right.
- 13:34Joe Nugent: It looks bad on us, it's bad on them.
- 13:36Joe Nugent: They're gonna lose a bunch of money.
- 13:37Joe Nugent: I don't want to go to court for all breaking the contract.
- 13:40Joe Nugent: Like, no, it has to be right.
- 13:42Joe Nugent: And so I think for for me, slow and steady means doing it the right way.
- 13:47Joe Nugent: Now, I will also contradict myself in the sense of I am also guilty of being too slow and not making decisions fast enough.
- 13:56Jennifer Johnson: Like just just indecisive?
- 13:58Joe Nugent: Analysis paralysis.
- 13:59Joe Nugent: It's like, you know, it's like if I wasn't dating Melissa, I'd be dating analysis, analysis paralysis because we are really good friends.
- 14:06Jennifer Johnson: I I my grandpa would call that uh tire kicking.
- 14:10Jennifer Johnson: Yeah.
- 14:10Jennifer Johnson: Oh yeah.
- 14:10Jennifer Johnson: Like quit kicking the tires.
- 14:12Jennifer Johnson: Let's make a decision and move on.
- 14:13Joe Nugent: Exactly like our customers, right?
- 14:15Joe Nugent: How many customers does someone have?
- 14:16Joe Nugent: Oh my gosh.
- 14:17Joe Nugent: And they're like kicking the tires because they're asking a thousand questions and takes you know three months to bring that sale to a close and all that.
- 14:24Joe Nugent: We don't have that luxury in my industry, but yeah, I mean, so the analysis paralysis thing for me, it's been something I've been working on a lot.
- 14:32Joe Nugent: And you and you think about it, it started really nine years ago when I started the company 10 years ago now.
- 14:38Joe Nugent: Um, and it took me five years to go full time.
- 14:42Joe Nugent: And then it took me almost another year to bring on my first inspector, and then it took a year later to bring on another inspector and an office person and marketing.
- 14:51Joe Nugent: And then it took another two years to go nationwide, and it's taken us eight months to bring on that first licensee and to find the right person.
- 14:59Joe Nugent: And so there is a there is a methodical way about it, but sometimes I'm like, oh, we need to speed this up.
- 15:05Joe Nugent: And that's exactly what I've done with my team now.
- 15:07Joe Nugent: Right.
- 15:08Joe Nugent: Because now I added on some different components of my team.
- 15:10Joe Nugent: We're trying new things, and it's like, okay, we have everything in place, right?
- 15:15Joe Nugent: Like that MVP, that minimal viable product.
- 15:18Joe Nugent: Right.
- 15:18Joe Nugent: We have had the MVP in place.
- 15:21Joe Nugent: It's not going to be perfect, but it's in place for what we need, and we can tweak and change as we go.
- 15:25Joe Nugent: Let's just go.
- 15:26Joe Nugent: Let's start.
- 15:27Jennifer Johnson: So analysis paralysis, what have you done to help you step through that and step past it a little bit quicker than you would have previously.
- 15:38Joe Nugent: I it's a that's a phenomenal question because I think it all comes down to what are our past experiences and how have they shaped us?
- 15:46Joe Nugent: So if I look back to the second half of 2023, where the bottom just fell out of the real estate market in Southwest Florida and everything just stalled.
- 15:55Joe Nugent: It went from like the faucet was on and someone it was like a trickle.
- 15:59Joe Nugent: Um, I didn't make decisions fast enough.
- 16:02Joe Nugent: The company lost over $50,000 in the second half of 2023 because I was more concerned about trying to keep my team and all that, which is important.
- 16:10Joe Nugent: But at the same time, if there's no Joe the home pro, there's no team members.
- 16:14Joe Nugent: Right.
- 16:14Joe Nugent: And so I wasn't selfish enough.
- 16:16Joe Nugent: And so I didn't, I didn't want to make those hard decisions that I need to make.
- 16:20Joe Nugent: And I didn't make them fast enough.
- 16:22Joe Nugent: So that's like a great example of like just learning from past mistakes.
- 16:26Joe Nugent: I think on top of that, it's having the mentors and business coaches and people around you in your inner circle that can also help you and that can push you.
- 16:34Joe Nugent: And like Sean, who's one of my best friends, you know, Sean's great at giving me that encouragement when I need it and calling me out on my BS and going, you know, stop.
- 16:46Joe Nugent: Right.
- 16:46Joe Nugent: This is what needs to happen.
- 16:48Joe Nugent: Do it now.
- 16:48Joe Nugent: And I'm like, okay, he's right.
- 16:50Joe Nugent: Like 98% of the time, the guy's right.
- 16:52Joe Nugent: Right.
- 16:53Joe Nugent: And it's like I hate it.
- 16:55Joe Nugent: Well, of course.
- 16:56Joe Nugent: You gotta do it though, right?
- 16:57Joe Nugent: You gotta have those people.
- 16:58Jennifer Johnson: There has to be someone in your life that calls you on things and tells you when, you know, hey, high five.
- 17:04Jennifer Johnson: That's a great job.
- 17:05Jennifer Johnson: And yeah, you're falling flat on your face here, dude.
- 17:07Jennifer Johnson: Like, what why are you having those thoughts?
- 17:10Jennifer Johnson: Right.
- 17:11Jennifer Johnson: Like, I call it so a lot of people call them mentors.
- 17:14Jennifer Johnson: I call them my board of directors.
- 17:15Jennifer Johnson: We've talked about this before.
- 17:17Joe Nugent: I love that.
- 17:18Jennifer Johnson: Where it's the your inner circle, like you say, and it's maybe maybe people that you pay, whether that's an accountant or attorney, and other people that you're friends with that you can use as a mentor who can check you on things and give you advice when you need advice.
- 17:34Jennifer Johnson: That's very important to your business.
- 17:36Joe Nugent: 100%.
- 17:37Joe Nugent: Um, so I just came off of the TV show The Blocks, and it was funny when when I was there, there's 120 entrepreneurs there.
- 17:46Joe Nugent: The majority of them are in like the 150,000 and less phase.
- 17:51Jennifer Johnson: Dollar amount less.
- 17:52Joe Nugent: Yeah, dollar amount less phase, right?
- 17:53Joe Nugent: Like so they're they're still in like that startup growth mode, right?
- 17:56Joe Nugent: The majority.
- 17:57Joe Nugent: And almost everyone there was like, oh, I've I've never had anyone like help me.
- 18:02Joe Nugent: I've never had a coach or I've never had this mentor, I've never had this.
- 18:06Joe Nugent: And I'm going, oh my God, this is like absolutely so important.
- 18:09Joe Nugent: And I look back and they're like, Well, what about you?
- 18:12Joe Nugent: And I'm like, Well, for six years, I've had a group of 15 plus that are all multi-million dollar business owners or were and successfully exited, who have been able to help me and guide me.
- 18:23Joe Nugent: And without question, I never would have been able to overcome the hurdles and challenges that I have faced in just the last, like really since like my divorce uh eight years ago.
- 21:01Joe Nugent: I never would have been able to overcome some of that stuff between like a divorce, between two massive hurricanes, uh collapsed economy, a this, uh that, right?
- 21:10Joe Nugent: There's no way, yeah, life, right?
- 21:13Joe Nugent: So there's, but thank God I had people that could like lift me up and guide me.
- 21:17Joe Nugent: There's no way that my licensing division, I would have been trying to franchise it and it would have cost me, I would have been bankrupt.
- 21:23Joe Nugent: Thank God I had a business coach.
- 21:25Joe Nugent: I was like, uh, you can't franchise, you got a license.
- 21:27Joe Nugent: And I was like, thank God for this stuff.
- 21:29Joe Nugent: Like, you need those people.
- 21:31Jennifer Johnson: I'm so glad that you mentioned coach because a lot of people kind of poo-poo the thought of having investing in themselves, really.
- 21:39Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 21:40Jennifer Johnson: Whether they're having a coach or they're joining a mastermind or they're just reading books, right?
- 21:45Jennifer Johnson: A lot of people kind of just go, I don't need that.
- 21:48Jennifer Johnson: But it's so important.
- 21:50Jennifer Johnson: And you are a living testament to you wouldn't be where you're at today if you didn't allow yourself the help that you needed.
- 22:00Jennifer Johnson: And I think, you know, it's like any process, it comes down to acknowledging that I can't do this by myself.
- 22:07Joe Nugent: You have to be vulnerable.
- 22:09Jennifer Johnson: That's it.
- 22:09Joe Nugent: Right.
- 22:10Joe Nugent: And and I think for me, I'm super honest and transparent with myself.
- 22:15Joe Nugent: And I'm I'm always vulnerable.
- 22:17Joe Nugent: I mean, I always joke that I wear my heart on my sleeve, and so everyone knows like if I'm in a good mood or a bad mood or happy or sad or whatever.
- 22:24Joe Nugent: Um, and it's just that's just how I am.
- 22:26Joe Nugent: And so I'm like, I don't know everything.
- 22:28Joe Nugent: So what I've done is I'm okay with saying I don't know everything.
- 22:31Joe Nugent: I'm okay with raising my hand.
- 22:33Joe Nugent: And I don't feel bad or stupid when I'm like, explain this to me.
- 22:36Joe Nugent: Put myself in rooms that were I'm the dumbest person in the room.
- 22:40Joe Nugent: I love that because I'm the only gonna learn.
- 22:42Joe Nugent: And so I for me, I just don't have an ego about it because at the end of the day, what are my goals?
- 22:47Joe Nugent: What am I trying to accomplish?
- 22:49Joe Nugent: I'm not gonna be able to do that, or it's gonna take me twice as long if I cannot be honest with myself and be vulnerable.
- 22:56Joe Nugent: That's true.
- 22:56Joe Nugent: By the way, I have to tell you this funny story.
- 22:58Joe Nugent: And I don't know if you've ever heard me say this before.
- 23:01Joe Nugent: Melissa and I's third date, I finally looked at her and I was like, listen, I don't need you to coach me.
- 23:06Joe Nugent: Oh my gosh, because I go, listen, I actually would like to date you.
- 23:10Joe Nugent: Like, can we date maybe?
- 23:11Joe Nugent: And like you can coach me later on dating or whatever, right?
- 23:14Joe Nugent: And like Melissa has like that executive leadership coaching in her, right?
- 23:18Joe Nugent: Because that's what she does.
- 23:19Jennifer Johnson: This is his this is Joe's girlfriend.
- 23:20Jennifer Johnson: My girlfriend.
- 23:21Jennifer Johnson: For those of you that don't know.
- 23:22Joe Nugent: Yeah, so it's just so funny though.
- 23:23Joe Nugent: But I was like, um, I don't, I'd like to date you.
- 23:26Joe Nugent: I like I don't want to be coached by you.
- 23:28Joe Nugent: Because I'm sorry, I just can't turn it off.
- 23:29Joe Nugent: And I was like, of course you can't, right?
- 23:31Joe Nugent: But I mean, this, and I I'm saying this jokingly, but it's very, it's so so true because Melissa is so good with like the CEOs and vice presidents that she works with.
- 23:40Joe Nugent: So it really is perfect for me to like for us to be dating.
- 23:43Joe Nugent: Because there are times I'm like, hey, I need help with this.
- 23:45Joe Nugent: Like, what do you think I should do or whatever?
- 23:47Joe Nugent: And then she puts on her coaching hat.
- 23:49Joe Nugent: And I'm like, okay, that 27 minutes is up now, so put on your girlfriend hat.
- 23:54Jennifer Johnson: I want the other one.
- 23:55Jennifer Johnson: But it's so true.
- 23:56Jennifer Johnson: And I can tell you from my coaching experience, coaching small business owners, that a lot of times you talk to people, you know, two or three times, and by the third time, they realize, wow, I really do need a coach.
- 24:09Jennifer Johnson: I need somebody who can can help me walk through this.
- 24:13Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 24:13Joe Nugent: How many times when you talk to somebody though, they don't realize it until you point out that light bulb idea and they're like, oh, I never thought and for you, it's like this is staring at me right in the face.
- 24:26Joe Nugent: Like it's right there.
- 24:27Jennifer Johnson: But it's like how we talked about at the very beginning, where people saw your clear path.
- 24:32Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 24:33Jennifer Johnson: But you didn't see it or you were blinded by it, you chose not to see it.
- 24:37Jennifer Johnson: There were other things preventing you from that.
- 24:39Jennifer Johnson: Same thing.
- 24:40unknown: Yeah.
- 24:41Jennifer Johnson: Is they don't they need a lot of time, 95% of the time, people need to be told what to do.
- 24:46Jennifer Johnson: You need to tell them the clear, the clear step.
- 24:50Jennifer Johnson: This is one, two, three, this is what I think you need to do.
- 24:53Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 24:53Jennifer Johnson: And that's when the light bulb goes off.
- 24:55Jennifer Johnson: That's when they're like, whoa.
- 24:57Jennifer Johnson: How did I not see that?
- 24:58Joe Nugent: You also have to be receptive to coaching.
- 25:00Joe Nugent: Because you're gonna have some people like, oh, I don't know this, but then you give them the recommendation, like, oh, well, no, that's not gonna work because it's like, nope, that's not how you're gonna there's not always that I can't, I can't, I can't.
- 25:11Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 25:12Jennifer Johnson: No, let's reframe that.
- 25:14Joe Nugent: Exactly.
- 25:15Jennifer Johnson: Now I'm coaching.
- 25:16Jennifer Johnson: Yeah, exactly.
- 25:17Jennifer Johnson: But you're right.
- 25:18Jennifer Johnson: It's it's also there have they have to be receptive to it.
- 25:22Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 25:22Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 25:23Joe Nugent: And I know a ton of people, a ton of business owners that are really, really green or young, or they need they need help in certain areas, and they're just not open.
- 25:32Joe Nugent: They're those like, no, no, no, I think I know what's best.
- 25:34Joe Nugent: And it's like, well, why wouldn't you want to ask this person who's built a multi-million dollar company?
- 25:40Joe Nugent: Like, wouldn't you want to like they probably know what they're doing, right?
- 25:43Jennifer Johnson: Or it's too much money.
- 25:44unknown: Yeah.
- 25:45Jennifer Johnson: Is it too much money to invest in yourself, knowing that you're going to get so much more out of it?
- 25:50Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 25:50Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 25:50Joe Nugent: It's funny.
- 25:51Joe Nugent: They uh the I went to the when I was on the blocks, they have like a graduate program.
- 25:55Joe Nugent: And so uh I was in Kansas City a couple weeks ago for it.
- 25:59Joe Nugent: And it was so funny because Wes Bergman, who uh runs it, he goes, All right, so of course we have like it's like the last day there.
- 26:06Joe Nugent: And he was like, Of course, I'm gonna try to sell you something, but here's here's what we have.
- 26:09Joe Nugent: Right.
- 26:09Joe Nugent: He's like super funny about it, right?
- 26:10Joe Nugent: We're like, Yeah, of course.
- 26:11Joe Nugent: He goes, All right, uh, we're gonna take um 10% of your first million and over two years, and we're gonna coach you and we're just gonna take 10% of it or 15% of it, whatever it was.
- 26:22Joe Nugent: And it's like people didn't realize, like, oh, so he needs $15,000.
- 26:25Joe Nugent: But he's like telling you, like, hey, we're gonna help get you to this million, right?
- 26:30Joe Nugent: Right.
- 26:30Joe Nugent: And I'm like, the number of people are like, oh, that's that's just way too much money.
- 26:34Joe Nugent: And I was like, if you have a million dollars and you can't afford this 15, we should probably talk about other things.
- 26:39Jennifer Johnson: Like, but you it's it's how we're conditioned, perhaps as people to go, whoa, wait a second.
- 26:45Jennifer Johnson: Yeah, you know, it it success doesn't come free.
- 26:49Joe Nugent: No, it doesn't in any respect.
- 26:50Joe Nugent: It's so important to invest in your company, but also invest in yourself.
- 26:55Joe Nugent: And I think too, when you start to do that, you start to really realize just either how fast or how slow you actually need to go because there's times you need to step on the gas, and then there's also times you need to step on the brakes.
- 27:08Joe Nugent: Right.
- 27:09Joe Nugent: And I think you have to like understanding that, like that's where I fell into that trap last year, 2023.
- 27:16Joe Nugent: I didn't realize it fast enough, or I realized it, but I didn't want to admit it.
- 27:21Joe Nugent: And so to go back, I know because we're talking about slow and steady growth.
- 27:25Joe Nugent: I think the challenges of putting your foot on the gas too fast is you don't have the people, processes, systems in place.
- 27:32Joe Nugent: And so then your service suffers, or something, your culture and your company suffers.
- 27:36Joe Nugent: And then when you don't do it fast enough, you're just staying stagnant and you might miss that window of opportunity that you had to blow up and to really push the needle, whatever that needle is and wherever that may be.
- 27:49Joe Nugent: So those are big things, I think.
- 27:52Jennifer Johnson: I'm glad you brought up people processes.
- 27:54Jennifer Johnson: You know, when you're scaling, yeah, the process is all around your business and how you do your business is really, really important.
- 28:03Jennifer Johnson: And I see a lot of people who want to scale their business, but they don't have processes in place to do so.
- 28:11Jennifer Johnson: So, an example would be you know, I don't know your business, but let's say it's here's the protocol that you need to do when you go out to inspect a home for the first time.
- 28:20Jennifer Johnson: Here's your list, here's your checklist, here's exactly what you need to do.
- 28:23Jennifer Johnson: How important has that been in your business?
- 28:26Jennifer Johnson: Because I know in any business that you scale, that kind of has to be there before you can really pour the gas on the fire.
- 28:34Joe Nugent: I'm gonna try to keep this answer under one hour because this is like a one hour.
- 28:38Joe Nugent: Yeah, this is like a it's such a passion topic for me because you know, people are like without SOPs, your team has two.
- 28:45Jennifer Johnson: Standard operating procedures, sorry, yes, processes, however you want to.
- 28:48Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 28:49Joe Nugent: But without those, your team members have no roadmap to success and you're gonna fail.
- 28:53Joe Nugent: Let's take it one step further.
- 28:54Joe Nugent: Let's say you're ready to exit your company.
- 28:56Joe Nugent: So I've been in talks with a guy for a while to try to buy his home inspection company here in Southwest Florida.
- 29:01Joe Nugent: Phenomenal, very nice individual, solopreneur.
- 29:05Joe Nugent: There are no SPs, there are really no software, there's no this, there's no that.
- 29:09Joe Nugent: I'm like, what am I really buying?
- 29:10Joe Nugent: Right.
- 29:10Joe Nugent: So when you go to exit your company, no one wants to buy your job.
- 29:15Speaker 2: They want to buy your company.
- 29:16Joe Nugent: So if you look at the org chart and you're like, how many times is your name on your org chart?
- 29:20Joe Nugent: And if it's on there more than like once as CEO, then that's a problem.
- 29:26Joe Nugent: So the the procedures, processes, systems, absolutely imperative for everything that we do.
- 29:33Joe Nugent: Um, it was probably like six, eight months ago.
- 29:35Joe Nugent: I sat down with my operations manager and we use a platform called Trainual.
- 29:39Joe Nugent: It's not cheap, but it's a really good platform, and you can integrate it with a like there's another system called Loom where you can record videos and all these things.
- 29:47Joe Nugent: So, what we did is we had a company here locally record each and every process of here's the Joe the Home Pro way of how you inspect a home.
- 29:55Joe Nugent: And so now when we bring on a new inspector, they will go into Trainual and they have different modules.
- 30:01Joe Nugent: After each of those modules are questions they have to answer, and that's part of their onboarding.
- 30:05Joe Nugent: In addition to that, the question that I told Sarah, my operations manager, I go, This is what you have to answer.
- 30:11Joe Nugent: If you go out tomorrow and you win a $50 million lottery and you're like, peace out, Joe the Home Pro, which by the way I would too.
- 30:18Joe Nugent: Um, I'm just saying, if someone else comes in your chair on a Wednesday morning, could they sit down and do your job?
- 30:26Joe Nugent: And so the the key is not even just having the systems and process in place, it's also about getting down into the minutiae, is being as detail-oriented as you possibly can be about that.
- 30:39Joe Nugent: So no matter what happens, everyone knows here is the playbook.
- 30:43Joe Nugent: And it's really not just it's an internal playbook, it's also a playbook for success.
- 30:48Joe Nugent: And we have shared this now with our licensees as we're growing and scaling, and we have this in our licensee portal of like, here's an example of what to do.
- 30:57Joe Nugent: Here's an employee handbook, by the way.
- 30:59Joe Nugent: Here's this, here's how you inspect a home in Southwest Florida, here's how we do this, here's how you do your billing, et cetera, et cetera.
- 31:06Joe Nugent: And so we are we are laying out all these things, and all it's doing is it's making our company, which is only five people, make it seem like it's 50 people because of how big we are, and it's only adding value to the colour.
- 31:20Jennifer Johnson: Absolutely, it is on the back end and day to day.
- 31:23Joe Nugent: 100%.
- 31:24Jennifer Johnson: It's Joe the home pro to box.
- 31:26Joe Nugent: Yeah, and that's what our licensing is.
- 31:28Joe Nugent: Yeah, I'm in a box, I know.
- 31:29Joe Nugent: I don't know.
- 31:30Joe Nugent: I'm in a glass case of emotion.
- 31:31Joe Nugent: I mean, that's a good anchor man reference reference.
- 31:33Joe Nugent: Um, but no, for for me though, and for us, like our licensing program is exactly that.
- 31:40Joe Nugent: It's like someone's like, Oh, are you teaching them how to inspect a home?
- 31:43Joe Nugent: I was like, No, there's companies and training.
- 31:45Joe Nugent: I don't, that's not my thing because inspecting a home in Cleveland, Ohio is way different than Naples, Florida.
- 31:51Joe Nugent: But what we are gonna do is home inspectors are not great inherently, generally speaking, broad stroke here, not trying to offend anyone, but they're not great at business operations, they don't know how to run the company.
- 32:03Jennifer Johnson: Oh, that was the wrong one.
- 32:05Jennifer Johnson: Darn, I was looking for the want wamp button.
- 32:09Joe Nugent: Oh, see, that was magical.
- 32:10Joe Nugent: We're in Disney now.
- 32:11Jennifer Johnson: I I learned the soundboard.
- 32:13Jennifer Johnson: Apparently, I didn't really not.
- 32:15Joe Nugent: There needs to be label them.
- 32:16Joe Nugent: This is part of your SOPs.
- 32:18Joe Nugent: Label your soundboard.
- 32:19Joe Nugent: Exactly.
- 32:19Jennifer Johnson: I was trying to do the not the crickets either.
- 32:21Jennifer Johnson: Oh, stop pressing the buttons.
- 32:25Joe Nugent: Yeah, that's good.
- 32:26Joe Nugent: Yeah, but I mean, that really is like um like we want to teach people how to run and how to run their company.
- 32:32Joe Nugent: So whether they want to just be a solopreneur and make 150 or 200,000, that's awesome.
- 32:38Joe Nugent: You do that.
- 32:38Joe Nugent: Or if you want to grow and scale and add inspectors and get past that seven figure mark, here's a way to do that too.
- 32:46Joe Nugent: And so that's really what the licensing division is is we're gonna give you the roadmap of success of here's everything that I did in order to get to where I am.
- 32:54Joe Nugent: And here's what you can do if you so choose to.
- 32:56Jennifer Johnson: So it's like franchising, but it's not franchising because you're giving them all the tools saying here's Joe the home pro and a boss.
- 33:02Jennifer Johnson: You go and and and do what you do, but still stay within these parameters.
- 33:07Jennifer Johnson: What's on the thing?
- 33:08Jennifer Johnson: When are we talking about licensing?
- 33:09Joe Nugent: Yeah, the light what the biggest difference between licensing and franchising is that the licensee can run the company however they want.
- 33:15Joe Nugent: There's no mandate.
- 33:17Joe Nugent: So, in other words, if I use QuickBooks to do all of our invoices, the license the licensee can use APIs.
- 33:23Joe Nugent: Anything they want.
- 33:23Joe Nugent: Okay.
- 33:24Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 33:24Joe Nugent: Whatever they want to do.
- 33:25Jennifer Johnson: And if it was franchised, it has to be followed exactly.
- 33:28Jennifer Johnson: Now, do you still have to give them support?
- 33:29Jennifer Johnson: Do you still give them support as a licensee?
- 33:32Joe Nugent: Oh, thank you so much for asking this question.
- 33:34Joe Nugent: Because one of the things I'm really proud of, because I came from that franchising world in the hotel industry.
- 33:39Joe Nugent: Sure.
- 33:39Joe Nugent: And I was on both sides of it, corporate office as well as uh as the franchisee.
- 33:43Joe Nugent: And what I have done is I've been able to implement a franchise model with licensing pricing.
- 33:49Joe Nugent: So, in other words, we have the support like you would get on a franchise, but you're doing it for a tenth of the price on the licensing division.
- 33:58Joe Nugent: The idea is to take away the barrier to entry for home inspectors.
- 34:02Joe Nugent: How do I charge somebody $50,000 on a home inspection franchise when it costs me $10,000 to start mine?
- 34:10Jennifer Johnson: Ah, I see.
- 34:11Joe Nugent: And 50 to 60% of your franchise fee goes to the franchise broker anyway.
- 34:14Joe Nugent: That's fine.
- 34:15Joe Nugent: That's just not my thing.
- 34:16Joe Nugent: So here's an idea.
- 34:17Joe Nugent: We're gonna charge you five.
- 34:19Joe Nugent: And then after 60 days, we're just gonna charge you a thousand bucks a month.
- 34:22Joe Nugent: That's it.
- 34:23Jennifer Johnson: Instead of doing like a royalty.
- 34:25Joe Nugent: Yep.
- 34:25Joe Nugent: Like here's your digital fee, your tech fee, your marketing fee, your this fee.
- 34:29Joe Nugent: Next thing you know, you're at 10, 12, 14 a month.
- 34:33Joe Nugent: Right.
- 34:33Joe Nugent: And I'm like, hey, how about your first like two to three inspections?
- 34:36Joe Nugent: They just come back to us for the coaching and so forth that we're providing.
- 34:40Joe Nugent: And then you keep all the rest.
- 34:41Joe Nugent: Like that's it.
- 34:42Joe Nugent: For five years, all you pay is $12,000 a year.
- 34:45Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 34:46Joe Nugent: That's it.
- 34:47Joe Nugent: Wow.
- 34:48Joe Nugent: All the rest is yours.
- 34:49Joe Nugent: So if you if you're bringing in $150K, you're like, this is great.
- 34:52Joe Nugent: I just kept $138,000.
- 34:54Jennifer Johnson: It makes it absolutely simple.
- 34:56Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 34:57Joe Nugent: And that was my whole point of doing it.
- 34:59Joe Nugent: Because if you're a license or licensee, rather, and as the as the licensor company, the last thing I want to do is be like, oh, let me wait and get someone's financials because they can use whatever they want.
- 35:10Joe Nugent: Let me calculate this, then let me send them a bill.
- 35:12Joe Nugent: Then it's like you're three weeks in.
- 35:14Joe Nugent: Screw that.
- 35:15Joe Nugent: There's a lot of stuff going on.
- 35:16Joe Nugent: You have your credit card on file on the first of the month.
- 35:19Joe Nugent: We hit it for a thousand dollars after 60 days.
- 35:21Joe Nugent: So you pay your license fee, which we do owner financing on.
- 35:24Joe Nugent: So, oh, I don't have five grand.
- 35:25Joe Nugent: Cool.
- 35:26Joe Nugent: Couple options.
- 35:27Joe Nugent: Here's two banks of friends of mine that work at these banks.
- 35:29Joe Nugent: They offer 0%, 18 months on a credit card.
- 35:31Joe Nugent: You can put it on there, whatever you need to do.
- 35:33Joe Nugent: Or you can do it through us.
- 35:35Joe Nugent: We'll we'll do a like almost 0% interest, basically.
- 35:39Joe Nugent: We'll spread it out over 12 months, and then after 60 days, you start paying.
- 35:44Joe Nugent: So even if they give us the full five thousand dollars, we're still like, hey, you just gave us a bunch of money.
- 35:49Joe Nugent: We're good.
- 35:50Joe Nugent: Get your get your feet out from underneath you.
- 35:53Joe Nugent: And in 60 days, then you can start to pay.
- 35:56Jennifer Johnson: It's so great because it's like a it's a hybrid, yeah, an innovative hybrid model.
- 36:02Jennifer Johnson: Because it's not completely one or not completely the other.
- 36:05Jennifer Johnson: It's not completely franchising, not completely uh the licensing portion of it.
- 36:10Jennifer Johnson: You're melding the two.
- 36:12Joe Nugent: I am determined to disrupt this archaic industry because it's so archaic.
- 36:18Jennifer Johnson: And you know, historically that's where money's made is when you disrupt an industry that is very antiquated.
- 36:24Joe Nugent: And I know I'm doing something right because there's a lot of haters on me right now, and I love it.
- 36:28Joe Nugent: I just love it.
- 36:29Jennifer Johnson: It's turn those into lovers.
- 36:31Joe Nugent: Oh, like I mean, there is a certain age demographic uh that is on the upper echelon that just is like, what is this guy doing?
- 36:40Joe Nugent: Like, I don't understand.
- 36:41Joe Nugent: And it's like, good, you're not supposed to.
- 36:43Jennifer Johnson: Because you're disrupting it exactly, and making them, I mean, when you change something, people automatically are like, whoa, wait a second, wait a second.
- 36:52Jennifer Johnson: And you know, they don't want to be left behind, but yet a lot of them want to just be stuck where they're at.
- 36:57Joe Nugent: Right.
- 36:57Jennifer Johnson: I don't want to change the visitors.
- 37:00Joe Nugent: 100%.
- 37:00Joe Nugent: The very first thing I realized when I started my home inspection company is how little support there is out there for new inspectors.
- 37:07Joe Nugent: You have to figure it out on your own, which by the way, is super costly and takes a lot of time.
- 37:13Joe Nugent: And so what we want to do is we want to say, hey, let's hold your hand a little bit.
- 37:17Joe Nugent: We're gonna help you with this, we're gonna show you how to do things.
- 37:20Joe Nugent: You ultimately are responsible for your own success, but we want to help you.
- 37:24Joe Nugent: The other thing that we're passionate about is we want to put 200 veterans to work.
- 37:27Joe Nugent: I love that.
- 37:28Joe Nugent: How can anyone sit there and say, screw you for disrupting?
- 37:31Joe Nugent: Like, I'm putting veterans to work.
- 37:33Joe Nugent: Like, that's my goal.
- 37:34Joe Nugent: That's amazing.
- 37:34Joe Nugent: If I could hang my head on anything, it's that I was an awesome dad and that I helped put 200 veterans to work.
- 37:41Joe Nugent: Like I'd be a happy man with that, right?
- 37:43Joe Nugent: And so, again, the whole idea with licensing is let's make it easier for people.
- 37:48Joe Nugent: Let's take away the hurdles, let's make it affordable for them too.
- 37:51Joe Nugent: Then let's give them the tools and resources to be successful, and then let's get either way.
- 37:55Joe Nugent: Right.
- 37:55Joe Nugent: And so it's really cool.
- 37:56Joe Nugent: So, and the other thing that it does too, Jennifer, is that it's gonna allow people on my current team to move up.
- 38:02Joe Nugent: So it's not just like you're stagnant in Joe the Home Pro in Southwest Florida or in Tampa or Orlando, whatever it might be.
- 38:09Joe Nugent: You now have, I now have ways to move people up the ranks if they so choose to.
- 38:15Joe Nugent: So my operations manager is gonna be our VP of client services for the licensees.
- 38:19Joe Nugent: So she's gonna be like their go-to person, right?
- 38:22Joe Nugent: My lead home inspector is gonna be our director of education.
- 38:25Joe Nugent: So he's gonna lead one of the training classes on what we do four every Monday was training Monday.
- 38:31Joe Nugent: He's he leads one of them.
- 38:32Joe Nugent: So those types of things.
- 38:34Joe Nugent: And then as we continue to grow and scale, be like, okay, I need an area director here, I need an area director here.
- 38:39Joe Nugent: Let's just make sure that we're giving people the resources.
- 38:42Joe Nugent: So that's kind of like, you know, in a nutshell.
- 38:43Joe Nugent: That's again slow and steady on all of it because I wanted to make sure I had everything in place because the licensing division I did take more time with than probably I maybe should have, but I feel so much better that I know that when our first licensee came on in Lynchburg, Virginia, we were ready for it.
- 39:01Joe Nugent: Um, when it comes to locally, what I should have done, should have just started.
- 39:11Joe Nugent: Go, go, go, get going, get going.
- 39:12Joe Nugent: We'll figure it out.
- 39:13Joe Nugent: This is too big because now you're talking about someone else's business in a different part of the country.
- 39:19Joe Nugent: And you really, I just really wanted to make sure that was set in stone and ready to go.
- 39:23Jennifer Johnson: Done right.
- 39:23Joe Nugent: Yeah.
- 39:24Jennifer Johnson: Done right.
- 39:24Joe Nugent: I just saw the, by the way, uh, I just saw the movie last night, uh, Blackberry.
- 39:29Jennifer Johnson: Oh, I've not.
- 39:30Joe Nugent: Oh my gosh, unbelievable.
- 39:31Jennifer Johnson: Is it about the Blackberry?
- 39:32Joe Nugent: It's about the Blackberry, about the guys that started.
- 39:34Joe Nugent: And just really quick, because he brought this up, he everyone was pressuring him to send all his manufacturing over to China.
- 39:41Joe Nugent: And he goes, No, when I do that, it doesn't come back right.
- 39:44Joe Nugent: They they skip steps, etc.
- 39:46Joe Nugent: Sure enough, Blackberry gets gigantic, and he gets convinced by his COO, we got to go to China to fulfill this production.
- 39:56Joe Nugent: They do it, everything was wrong.
- 39:59Joe Nugent: Verizon sued him for 500 million.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Right?
- 40:03Joe Nugent: And what happens?
- 40:03Joe Nugent: The company obviously implodes and so on and so forth.
- 40:06Joe Nugent: It's a great example of doing things right.
- 40:08Joe Nugent: And then they had the see, they had it done right the first time.
- 40:11Joe Nugent: They did.
- 40:12Joe Nugent: And he had that company culture and he had that mindset, and then it was the corporate greed took over.
- 40:17Joe Nugent: Right.
- 40:17Joe Nugent: Again, why growing and scaling?
- 40:19Joe Nugent: And these companies, that's I'm guarantee you, this is what happens with a lot of them.
- 40:23Joe Nugent: They see number of team members, dollar signs of revenue, bigger service area.
- 40:28Joe Nugent: It makes us look larger.
- 40:29Joe Nugent: We can exit at some point.
- 40:31Joe Nugent: And they're like, oh yeah, the service side, it's in there somewhere, but they lose company culture, they lose everything that they were built on, that foundation.
- 40:38Joe Nugent: And that's why I am determined not to lose that foundation.
- 40:43Jennifer Johnson: I love that.
- 40:43Jennifer Johnson: I read a book about the guy that started Grubhub.
- 40:46Joe Nugent: Oh, yeah.
- 40:47Jennifer Johnson: Uh, that was also a very good book about not losing your company culture and making sure that you sustain it and everything.
- 40:53Jennifer Johnson: And uh it's very true.
- 40:55Joe Nugent: Every company has a culture.
- 40:57Joe Nugent: Some are good and some are bad, but there is a culture there.
- 40:59Joe Nugent: And I think my 20 years in the hospitality industry set me up perfectly for what I'm doing because of course it did.
- 41:05Joe Nugent: The hospitality industry is riddled with horrendous culture.
- 41:08Joe Nugent: Horrendous culture.
- 41:10Joe Nugent: And so I even look at like the place I last worked at.
- 41:13Joe Nugent: I mean, I was there almost eight years.
- 41:14Joe Nugent: I got a certified letter in the mail from them.
- 41:16Joe Nugent: Oh goodness, saying, Your position's been eliminated.
- 41:19Joe Nugent: Thank you.
- 41:19Joe Nugent: And I'm like, eight years, I'm the highest paid team member.
- 41:21Joe Nugent: Like this is how, like, no text, no email on the phone, right?
- 41:24Joe Nugent: So I'm just saying, like, that's one example.
- 41:27Joe Nugent: I am determined to be like, okay, let's do extra stuff for our team members.
- 41:31Joe Nugent: You keep your team members, like keep them happy, take care of them.
- 41:33Joe Nugent: They're gonna stay longer, treat your customers better.
- 41:35Joe Nugent: This is that company culture.
- 41:37Joe Nugent: And then that culture internally will also rub off externally to your clients and they see it.
- 41:42Joe Nugent: Absolutely.
- 41:43Joe Nugent: It all starts with your team.
- 41:44Joe Nugent: Yes.
- 41:44Joe Nugent: And so that's why that slow and steady approach, like we've been talking about, in my mind, it there's nothing better than it.
- 41:51Joe Nugent: It's just the difference is understanding when to put the foot on the gas, which is the thing that I've had the biggest challenge with in the past.
- 41:58Joe Nugent: Not anymore, because I'm like, like, right?
- 42:01Joe Nugent: I'm like, you know, no one look at me.
- 42:03Joe Nugent: I'm going very fast.
- 42:04Jennifer Johnson: I'm I'm in my lane and I'm doing it.
- 42:06Jennifer Johnson: I'm doing it.
- 42:07Joe Nugent: I'm in the left lane.
- 42:08Jennifer Johnson: Joe, I have so loved our conversation today.
- 42:10Jennifer Johnson: I know we were all over the place.
- 42:11Jennifer Johnson: I know, I'm sorry, but it's okay, but this is how it works when we get together with everything but the kitchen sink.
- 42:17Joe Nugent: You're the best.
- 42:18Joe Nugent: Thanks for having me.
- 42:18Joe Nugent: Thanks for all you're doing, by the way, for small business owners.
- 42:21Joe Nugent: Absolutely.
- 42:21Joe Nugent: Thanks for all you're doing in Southwest Florida.
- 42:23Joe Nugent: You are just a pillar and a steward of everything that Southwest Florida is about.
- 42:26Joe Nugent: So thank you so much.
- 42:28Jennifer Johnson: And thank you so much, Joe.
- 42:29Jennifer Johnson: If our listeners want to get in touch with you, how can they do so?
- 42:31Joe Nugent: No, I'm pretty busy.
- 42:32Jennifer Johnson: No, no time.
- 42:33Jennifer Johnson: See, I knew the no was gonna come in here somewhere.
- 42:35Jennifer Johnson: We were joking before we came on this podcast.
- 42:38Jennifer Johnson: He's like, what if I just answer no to one of your questions?
- 42:40Jennifer Johnson: That's why I'd be searching, that's why I was trying out the buttons before to see if I could do the wah wah wah.
- 42:47Jennifer Johnson: And obviously I can't find the buttons.
- 42:49Joe Nugent: So you found all of them put that one.
