- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardon Territory.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jim Hayes with Kyle Gibson Lancelynn on spring Break. Matt
- 0:16Speaker 1: Holliday is with Team USA. But what a nice opportunity
- 0:22Speaker 1: to say hello to Matt. Paul of cam A WEX
- 0:24Speaker 1: Radio was kind of enough to join us now, Matt, welcome.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I know you just got back from spring training. I
- 0:31Speaker 1: don't see a tan, though, I don't see any signs
- 0:34Speaker 1: of a tan at all.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I'm naturally a little pasty white, so even though I
- 0:39Speaker 2: spent a fair amount of time outside down in Jupiter,
- 0:42Speaker 2: you're right, very little tan.
- 0:44Speaker 1: And that's the life that I that I live.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I guess Jim two, Jim, you know very well that
- 0:51Speaker 3: they don't necessarily like reflect sunlight into the media put
- 0:55Speaker 3: it there. You know what I'm saying. When you're doing
- 0:56Speaker 3: investigated journalism, when you're working in the locker room and
- 0:59Speaker 3: your work in the media booth, you're not on the beach.
- 1:02Speaker 3: I think this is a sign that Matt was doing
- 1:04Speaker 3: the working hard and he had a really good trip
- 1:06Speaker 3: learning about the Cardinals, so we ought to have some
- 1:08Speaker 3: pretty good conversations.
- 1:09Speaker 1: You're no Matt, Matt knows this. You're on the backfields.
- 1:13Speaker 1: That's where you get the sun because you got to
- 1:16Speaker 1: look at all these guys and maybe you're flying under
- 1:18Speaker 1: the radar. So Matt, I want to ask you, like,
- 1:22Speaker 1: obviously we're in rebuild with this, with this Wall club.
- 1:25Speaker 1: You were there, what are your main takeaways? What stood
- 1:29Speaker 1: out to you the positivity that exists.
- 1:33Speaker 2: And we'll see what happens when March twenty six hits
- 1:36Speaker 2: and the games actually start mattering. And I'm not going
- 1:38Speaker 2: to sit here and tell you that this is going
- 1:40Speaker 2: to be this team that just blows everybody out of
- 1:42Speaker 2: the water and surprises everybody and they have this amazing season.
- 1:46Speaker 2: That's not the point that I'm trying to make. But
- 1:49Speaker 2: to be cliche, it does feel like everybody is pulling
- 1:52Speaker 2: that rope in the same direction. And from a negative standpoint,
- 1:56Speaker 2: I mean, there's only a couple of small things. You know,
- 1:59Speaker 2: Mason went at one point, I had a little bit
- 2:01Speaker 2: it was a little bit injury. It missed a few
- 2:02Speaker 2: days of von Herrera doing a little bit of a
- 2:04Speaker 2: knee hunter Dobbins a little late getting in same thing
- 2:08Speaker 2: with Lars newt Bar But that's all I can think of.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Those are the most extreme negative things that have happened
- 2:14Speaker 2: in this camp.
- 2:15Speaker 1: So far, pitching has looked good.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Everybody seems to enjoy what's going on with this team,
- 2:21Speaker 2: so we can certainly dive into the specifics, but I
- 2:24Speaker 2: think I was I was really blown away by the
- 2:26Speaker 2: fact that the environment. It was the most positive camp
- 2:30Speaker 2: that I've been around in my handful of years.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Going down there and watching Cardinal Spring trainings.
- 2:36Speaker 3: You know what, I just I love hearing it. First Off, Sorry, Matt,
- 2:40Speaker 3: every now and then I jump in and I tell
- 2:41Speaker 3: Jim to just I had normally raised my hand, So Jim,
- 2:44Speaker 3: I apologize. I didn't raise my hand. But I love
- 2:48Speaker 3: hearing it because I think what kind of gets lost
- 2:52Speaker 3: in some of the mix when it comes to culture
- 2:55Speaker 3: and a locker room and a team and even a business. Right.
- 2:59Speaker 3: I love to train like this to real life because
- 3:01Speaker 3: you look at your work environment, and there's certain work
- 3:04Speaker 3: environments people want to be in, in certain work environments
- 3:06Speaker 3: you don't want to be in. And I love that
- 3:09Speaker 3: you say the positivity and the feel around it because
- 3:12Speaker 3: if you can tell that means the players have done
- 3:15Speaker 3: something different and it actually matters, and it really does matter.
- 3:19Speaker 3: I know it sounds like you said cliche and oh, well,
- 3:23Speaker 3: you know everybody's happening on, but it really does matter
- 3:25Speaker 3: when you agree.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think we spend too much time like
- 3:30Speaker 2: talking about leadership and how you find leadership.
- 3:34Speaker 1: To me, it's.
- 3:34Speaker 2: About going and getting good guys who are professionals, who
- 3:38Speaker 2: know how to conduct themselves in a professional way, and
- 3:41Speaker 2: then the leadership is just going to form out of that.
- 3:45Speaker 2: But when I'm sitting there in the clubhouse and I'm
- 3:48Speaker 2: looking at one corner and I see Ryan standing holding
- 3:51Speaker 2: court with the rest of the pitchers, and then I
- 3:54Speaker 2: see Mason Wynn and JJ weatherhold kind of messing with
- 3:58Speaker 2: each other from across the clubhouse and being a little
- 4:00Speaker 2: bit loud and things like that, it just it felt
- 4:03Speaker 2: like there was ownership inside of that clubhouse. And I'm
- 4:07Speaker 2: in the media, so I get thirty minutes to an
- 4:10Speaker 2: hour in the clubhouse every day. So for me to
- 4:12Speaker 2: sit here and say that I know everything that's going
- 4:13Speaker 2: on behind closed doors, that would be disingenuous. But I've
- 4:16Speaker 2: been around long enough and have seen enough things to
- 4:19Speaker 2: know that it just seemed like a really good environment.
- 4:22Speaker 2: And I think there are a lot of guys on
- 4:24Speaker 2: this team that are ready to be part of this
- 4:27Speaker 2: next core of Cardinals baseball, and there's a lot of
- 4:30Speaker 2: excitement that goes along with that.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I believe with this ball club, leadership is not the
- 4:35Speaker 1: thing they're going to be lacking, but they aren't trying
- 4:38Speaker 1: to find pisa to the puzzle so they can be
- 4:41Speaker 1: as competitive as possible as they rebuilt. And one of
- 4:45Speaker 1: the guys that has stood out so far as Josh
- 4:48Speaker 1: wall Buying, this twenty two year old who between hia
- 4:53Speaker 1: and double A last year twenty homers, close to two
- 4:57Speaker 1: ninety batting average and he's been a monster though are
- 5:00Speaker 1: in terms of games at spring training the Cardinals need
- 5:04Speaker 1: a right handed bat who can play outfield. Seems to
- 5:08Speaker 1: be that guy. But I'm getting the sense, Matt and
- 5:10Speaker 1: you were there the Cardinals don't want to push guys
- 5:13Speaker 1: along too quickly. Yeah.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I think that's something and it's really going against industry
- 5:18Speaker 2: trends right now. You look across Major League Baseball and
- 5:21Speaker 2: a lot of teams are trying to force guys up
- 5:23Speaker 2: into the big leagues as quickly as possible, where there's
- 5:26Speaker 2: still a lot of development that's happening at the major
- 5:29Speaker 2: league level. This is Heim Bloom's first year as the
- 5:31Speaker 2: Cardinals president base of operations, so we'll see what he
- 5:34Speaker 2: actually does and the decisions that are being made. But
- 5:37Speaker 2: just based off what we're hearing from him, it feels
- 5:40Speaker 2: like he is somebody that thinks checking off success at
- 5:44Speaker 2: Triple A is part of the development process, and Triple
- 5:48Speaker 2: A is a weird, weird place where very few people
- 5:51Speaker 2: want to be at. The only guys who want to
- 5:52Speaker 2: be at Triple A are the guys who just got
- 5:54Speaker 2: there from Double A and they're there for like a
- 5:56Speaker 2: month later they're they want to be gone. It's a
- 5:58Speaker 2: bunch of guys who have been in the big leagues
- 6:00Speaker 2: and want to get back, or guys.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Who are ready to be in the big leagues.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Of Really it's very different than the other levels of
- 6:06Speaker 2: the minor league system, but him really sees that as
- 6:09Speaker 2: an important step in development. I think what Biaz is
- 6:12Speaker 2: doing right now is I think he's shortening.
- 6:15Speaker 1: His Triple A shelf life.
- 6:17Speaker 2: And what I mean by that is if he would
- 6:19Speaker 2: have had just a soso spring, I think he goes
- 6:21Speaker 2: to Triple A and he's there for a while and
- 6:24Speaker 2: he masters it. Now that he's at a point where
- 6:27Speaker 2: he has shown what he can do in big league camp.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Assuming this continues on for the next couple of weeks
- 6:31Speaker 2: through the end of spring training, if the numbers stay
- 6:34Speaker 2: kind of where they're at, I would think he ends
- 6:36Speaker 2: up at Triple A, but it's going to be a
- 6:38Speaker 2: little bit of a shorter trip for him, and that
- 6:40Speaker 2: we would see him at the big leagues at some
- 6:42Speaker 2: point this year.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Kyle, you think that's a smart move. I mean, to me,
- 6:49Speaker 1: if you're rebuilding, is it that much different to put
- 6:53Speaker 1: a guy at Triple A or give him a shot
- 6:55Speaker 1: at the big league level and see how it goes.
- 6:57Speaker 1: What are your thoughts on that?
- 6:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think that's a great point of
- 7:01Speaker 3: you know, shortening the Triple A runway and really, you know,
- 7:04Speaker 3: hopefully setting him up for success. Right there. There's a
- 7:08Speaker 3: mental side of this that you want to be very
- 7:12Speaker 3: aware of. You know. There's there's the mental side of, Okay,
- 7:16Speaker 3: taking a guy from High A or Double A and
- 7:18Speaker 3: putting them in the big leagues because you believe he's ready.
- 7:22Speaker 3: That's one thing the player himself needs to believe he's ready.
- 7:26Speaker 3: And we all walk around with a very comfortable level
- 7:30Speaker 3: of confidence until that confidence is shaken, and then when
- 7:35Speaker 3: you've never been to Triple A, now you're going back
- 7:37Speaker 3: to Triple A to kind of find a level of confidence.
- 7:40Speaker 3: And sometimes I can kind of play with you a
- 7:42Speaker 3: little bit. Yeah, so I think it's a good idea.
- 7:45Speaker 3: I think, you know, with some of the rules on,
- 7:49Speaker 3: you know, Rookie of the Year voting and service time
- 7:52Speaker 3: and stuff like that, I think you're gonna have less
- 7:54Speaker 3: and less hopefully deliberate service time manipulation. And I think
- 8:00Speaker 3: if you're the Cardinals, I don't necessarily think it helps
- 8:02Speaker 3: you to not have guys up there that you believe
- 8:06Speaker 3: could be part of your future, because at the same
- 8:08Speaker 3: time you're trying to figure o about figure out how
- 8:11Speaker 3: guys who have been here for a few years are
- 8:13Speaker 3: part of your future going forward. So yeah, I think
- 8:16Speaker 3: I think that's a great point. And hopefully, you know,
- 8:19Speaker 3: they can really lay this out for Joshua and say, hey, listen,
- 8:23Speaker 3: if in fact they do send him the Triple A,
- 8:26Speaker 3: he might break to the team. If in fact they
- 8:28Speaker 3: do send him a Triple A and say, hey, we
- 8:30Speaker 3: have noticed how good your spring is. Keep it going
- 8:33Speaker 3: to Triple A because you're one of the first guys
- 8:34Speaker 3: coming up whenever we need somebody.
- 8:37Speaker 1: One of the other things that Cardinals are figuring figuring out,
- 8:40Speaker 1: and there's a lot of them because they're doing this
- 8:43Speaker 1: kind of on the fly, is it's a rebuild. Is
- 8:46Speaker 1: pitching and Andre Polante has been really good or not
- 8:51Speaker 1: so good. I know Kyle Gibson that is very high
- 8:55Speaker 1: on Polonte. Pits well the other day. I think he's
- 9:00Speaker 1: a guy who works as hard as anyone correct in
- 9:03Speaker 1: those things. So, Matt, what's your sense of where the
- 9:05Speaker 1: Cardinals are with Plante in terms of him possibly being
- 9:09Speaker 1: part of the rotation. By the way, I said some
- 9:12Speaker 1: on social media about this, because I do know a
- 9:15Speaker 1: lot of baseball people who believe that whatever the problems
- 9:19Speaker 1: were last year for Plonte, they were fixable and he
- 9:22Speaker 1: will fix them. So they're high on Polante. What word
- 9:25Speaker 1: were you getting in Florida?
- 9:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Polonte is gonna be part of the
- 9:29Speaker 2: rotation to start the season, and for no other reason,
- 9:32Speaker 2: I think they're likely to use six starters in the
- 9:34Speaker 2: first month. I don't think it's gonna be a straight
- 9:36Speaker 2: six man rotation. They're gonna do some creative things. Some
- 9:39Speaker 2: guys maybe on a five day turn. Some guys maybe
- 9:41Speaker 2: on a six day turn. There's some off days and there,
- 9:43Speaker 2: so there's a lot going on, but almost no matter what,
- 9:47Speaker 2: I think Polonte's gonna be in the rotation to start
- 9:50Speaker 2: the season and then you see where it goes from there. Look,
- 9:53Speaker 2: the numbers last year weren't good. We know that he
- 9:55Speaker 2: pitched to a five point three to one ERA, and
- 9:56Speaker 2: that doesn't even tell the whole story because the second
- 9:59Speaker 2: half of the season he really really struggled. To your point, Jim,
- 10:03Speaker 2: and you're right, Andre Polonte is as hard of a
- 10:06Speaker 2: worker as is out there, and he went into the
- 10:08Speaker 2: offseason saying, how do I fix this? And he's added
- 10:12Speaker 2: some pitches, he's refined some pitches. I also think he's
- 10:14Speaker 2: going to change his mix a little bit because he
- 10:17Speaker 2: was successful earlier on in his career. Like you look
- 10:20Speaker 2: at what his fastball did, and it's kind of a
- 10:21Speaker 2: unique fastball that had a lot more success earlier on
- 10:25Speaker 2: and that has lately. So maybe you put that away
- 10:27Speaker 2: for a little bit, or you choose to use it
- 10:29Speaker 2: at different spots. He pitched yesterday, pitched on Sunday, and
- 10:33Speaker 2: he looked really good.
- 10:34Speaker 1: He went four.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Innings, gave up just a run on two hits. After
- 10:37Speaker 2: the game, Oliver Marmele said, that's as good as we
- 10:40Speaker 2: have seen Andre Polante. If he continues to pitch like that,
- 10:44Speaker 2: he's going to be really good. So I don't think
- 10:46Speaker 2: we just ignore what happened last year, and that's why
- 10:49Speaker 2: fans pushed back on you a little bit, Jim. The
- 10:51Speaker 2: numbers are what the numbers are. You don't ignore that.
- 10:54Speaker 2: You recognize it. You realize that he has some things
- 10:56Speaker 2: to work on, but you also leave open the possibility
- 11:00Speaker 2: that the work he did is going to be effective.
- 11:03Speaker 2: And let's not forget he's got a track record on
- 11:05Speaker 2: doing this. Two years ago it was not going so
- 11:07Speaker 2: well for him. That's when they sent him to Triple A.
- 11:09Speaker 2: He made the choice that he wanted to go there
- 11:11Speaker 2: to work as a starter, and when he came back,
- 11:14Speaker 2: he was the most effective starting pitcher for the Cardinals
- 11:17Speaker 2: in the second half of the season. So that shows
- 11:19Speaker 2: you he's a guy who knows how to fix things.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Now we'll see if it's going to work this year,
- 11:23Speaker 2: but I think he'll get that opportunity of the rotation
- 11:25Speaker 2: to start the year.
- 11:26Speaker 1: What do you like about him?
- 11:27Speaker 3: Copery A lot. I agree with all that. I think
- 11:31Speaker 3: he's definitly a guy that works hard and loves to
- 11:34Speaker 3: find things that can refine what he's doing. Listen, I
- 11:40Speaker 3: think it's no cigarette. I've been that guy with the
- 11:44Speaker 3: five yard. I've been that guy who goes through season
- 11:47Speaker 3: struggles and sometimes those struggles were four or five of
- 11:52Speaker 3: my thirty starts, and sometimes it was kind of mediocre
- 11:56Speaker 3: for twelve or fifteen starts, and every now and then
- 12:00Speaker 3: you feel like you're hitting your head against the wall.
- 12:01Speaker 3: You can't figure out what it is. So do I
- 12:04Speaker 3: think spring training is always going to be a good
- 12:06Speaker 3: barama where he's at or where pitchers or hitters are at. No.
- 12:10Speaker 3: But I think Andre through the years, with how he's
- 12:14Speaker 3: bounced back, but how he's made adjustments, I think he's
- 12:18Speaker 3: earned himself a little bit of runway here. And then
- 12:21Speaker 3: I think on top of that, and what really can
- 12:23Speaker 3: be dove into is how Dusty and Julio in the
- 12:27Speaker 3: pitching department see the changes. Okay, we can see the
- 12:31Speaker 3: changes in his stat line less walks, more strikeouts, less hits,
- 12:35Speaker 3: whatever it is, that doesn't always tell the whole story.
- 12:39Speaker 3: If they're going for a specific type of movement on
- 12:41Speaker 3: a pitch or location on a pitch, that's what you're
- 12:44Speaker 3: going for. Like you said, Matt, Andre has a funky
- 12:48Speaker 3: delivery and his stuff moves different than really almost anybody's
- 12:51Speaker 3: in the big leagues. In twenty twenty four, he was
- 12:54Speaker 3: trying to make his slider go to the left, and
- 12:57Speaker 3: Lance and I were sitting here saying, Andre, you're throwing
- 13:00Speaker 3: from eleven o'clock on the sun dial up here, not
- 13:04Speaker 3: two o'clock like most guys are. You're not gonna make
- 13:07Speaker 3: a slider Bill lev very easily, So you have to
- 13:09Speaker 3: use the appearance of it going left. And as he
- 13:13Speaker 3: makes adjustments, as he figures out how some of this
- 13:16Speaker 3: new stuff is gonna work, He's gonna make adjustments because
- 13:20Speaker 3: it just he really does have that desire to put
- 13:25Speaker 3: those adjustments to play. And he trusts his coaches as well.
- 13:28Speaker 3: And I think that's another thing. He listens really well,
- 13:30Speaker 3: and he's willing to try out anything.
- 13:33Speaker 1: You know, we can talk about this all we want.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Excuse me, Jim, we could talk about this all all
- 13:36Speaker 1: we want here.
- 13:37Speaker 2: The bottom line is we're not gonna get real answers
- 13:40Speaker 2: until the regular season gets started, because you don't have
- 13:43Speaker 2: hitters that are really game planning for pitchers, and spring training,
- 13:47Speaker 2: these hitters are going to the plate and they're trying
- 13:49Speaker 2: to work on their own stuff. So that's that's the wonderful,
- 13:52Speaker 2: amazing thing about baseball is you find out if what
- 13:57Speaker 2: you're doing is actually going to work or not. So
- 14:00Speaker 2: once the regular season gets started and hitters come to
- 14:02Speaker 2: the plate and are actually game planning for Polante, then
- 14:06Speaker 2: we get to see whether or not all the work
- 14:08Speaker 2: he did in the offseason and all the work that
- 14:10Speaker 2: he did in spring training is actually effective or not.
- 14:13Speaker 1: A his hitters, so pictures game plan and work on
- 14:17Speaker 1: certain things obviously, like you said, hitters do, and so
- 14:21Speaker 1: who knows what we're seeing at spring training. We've seen
- 14:25Speaker 1: from Gorman, a guy who they're not a count non
- 14:27Speaker 1: at third base with some power a little bit, but
- 14:32Speaker 1: not really hitting. Obviously, he's trying to build on what
- 14:34Speaker 1: he was trying to do last year, which had some
- 14:38Speaker 1: mixed results. Matt, where do you think Gorman is right now? Yeah?
- 14:42Speaker 2: And it's first off, he came to camp looking fantastic.
- 14:45Speaker 2: You know, we always make fun of the best shape
- 14:47Speaker 2: of my life thing, but he literally he looked not
- 14:50Speaker 2: many guys came in looking different. I think Gorman came
- 14:53Speaker 2: in looking different. Joel Poso came in looking different, but
- 14:56Speaker 2: most guys, I mean, you're just not gonna you're not
- 14:59Speaker 2: gonna see it. So but Gorman came in looking different.
- 15:02Speaker 2: I think he's over defensively at third base. It's been
- 15:05Speaker 2: pretty good for him here. We know about the power,
- 15:08Speaker 2: and he's hit the two home runs. The first home
- 15:11Speaker 2: run he hit of spring, he took it the other
- 15:13Speaker 2: way and put it over the wall in left center field.
- 15:15Speaker 2: I thought that was a really good development for him.
- 15:18Speaker 2: It's it's I'm not trying to not answer the question.
- 15:21Speaker 2: I'm just it's spring training, and you always take these
- 15:24Speaker 2: spring training stats with a grain of salt. He's another
- 15:26Speaker 2: guy who's going to get the opportunity to start the season.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I'm not worry I'm worried about two things with Gorman.
- 15:32Speaker 2: I'm worried about it. I'm not striking out, you know,
- 15:34Speaker 2: averaging two strikeouts a game. If he if he finds
- 15:38Speaker 2: a way to make more contact, the home runs are
- 15:41Speaker 2: going to come. The power is going to come. I
- 15:42Speaker 2: don't really care that much about his batting average. If
- 15:45Speaker 2: he's not striking out, the batting average is just going
- 15:47Speaker 2: to go up because he's making a little bit more
- 15:49Speaker 2: contact and he makes hard contact. You make hard contact,
- 15:52Speaker 2: you're gonna get hits, You're gonna get extra base hits,
- 15:54Speaker 2: you're going to get home runs. It's still a really
- 15:56Speaker 2: big question mark. He is somebody who I think he
- 16:00Speaker 2: he's got limited leash this year. When he got the
- 16:02Speaker 2: opportunity last season when Nolan Arnado got hurt, he really
- 16:07Speaker 2: didn't run with it. There was a point earlier in
- 16:09Speaker 2: the season. There was about a six week period last
- 16:11Speaker 2: year where you could have made the argument that Gorman
- 16:13Speaker 2: was the best hitter on the team, But then unfortunately,
- 16:16Speaker 2: when he got that third base opportunity, he wasn't able
- 16:18Speaker 2: to do much with it. So I think we are
- 16:20Speaker 2: now at the point with Gorman that he's going to
- 16:23Speaker 2: get that leash at the beginning of the season. He's
- 16:25Speaker 2: got to hit home runs, he's got to hit for power,
- 16:27Speaker 2: he's got to reduce the strikeouts. If he does that,
- 16:30Speaker 2: he's going to be okay. And I think some of
- 16:32Speaker 2: the things we have seen so far in spring would
- 16:36Speaker 2: at least show that there was a path towards him
- 16:39Speaker 2: moving that way, just with some of.
- 16:42Speaker 1: The hard contact he's been able to make Matt.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Two things. One, you don't ever need to apologize the
- 16:47Speaker 3: Jim for not answering your question. He is so used
- 16:50Speaker 3: to us dodging some of his questions. I did it
- 16:52Speaker 3: all last week. He tried to bait me into answers
- 16:55Speaker 3: last week and I wouldn't give it. So I like it.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Jim wants Spring Training scoop, and some times you just
- 17:00Speaker 3: can't give it to them. The other thing is we
- 17:02Speaker 3: have heard from Lance Linn about when he comes to
- 17:05Speaker 3: camp looking good or not. So I'm glad he's not here.
- 17:09Speaker 3: He might be he might be run with that answer
- 17:11Speaker 3: a little bit about looking good or looking good in camp.
- 17:17Speaker 1: I think I was talking about Matt before you were, uh,
- 17:20Speaker 1: you know, covering the Cardinals. They told Lance Lynn to
- 17:23Speaker 1: come to Camp Skinny. Came to Camp Skinny and he
- 17:26Speaker 1: was horrible. Then they told him go eat a few
- 17:28Speaker 1: sandwiches and get back to us. Well, nobody here, Nobody
- 17:33Speaker 1: was asking lance to cover the hot corner either. I
- 17:36Speaker 1: mean a little different, a little different, a little different, Kyle.
- 17:40Speaker 1: One of the things that they've unveiled at spring training
- 17:44Speaker 1: is a brand new eating facility for the players where
- 17:47Speaker 1: it's a huge I know it used to be a
- 17:51Speaker 1: huge credit. And also they're keeping like all the different
- 17:55Speaker 1: groups together. It's not like this big separation between the
- 17:59Speaker 1: miners and majors as a way to sort of build
- 18:03Speaker 1: some sort of camaraderie. And do you agree with that?
- 18:06Speaker 1: Is that something that if you were one of the
- 18:09Speaker 1: veteran guys you'd be on board with.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Yeah, there's not many facilities. I'm trying to think if
- 18:15Speaker 3: I ever played in one facility that was set up
- 18:20Speaker 3: that could actually house minor league and major league guys
- 18:24Speaker 3: eating in the same area. I love it because I
- 18:28Speaker 3: think even guys who are in Big league camp, who
- 18:31Speaker 3: are as non roster guys or minor league guys, maybe
- 18:34Speaker 3: it gives them fifteen or twenty minutes of seeing some
- 18:38Speaker 3: of their buddies from their Double A team or their
- 18:40Speaker 3: Low A team and kind of digest to what they've
- 18:43Speaker 3: gone through a little bit. And it gives them a
- 18:46Speaker 3: chance to answer questions and talk about what they're going through.
- 18:48Speaker 3: But there's not many facilities like that, So if that's
- 18:52Speaker 3: kind of the new setup, I love it. You know,
- 18:55Speaker 3: I don't think it's normally a Hey, let's separate the
- 18:58Speaker 3: big league in the minor league guys. Because of reason ABC.
- 19:02Speaker 3: I think it's more of the facilities even in the
- 19:06Speaker 3: last ten years, just weren't set up to feed a
- 19:09Speaker 3: couple hundred people at a time. So if that's part
- 19:13Speaker 3: of the new setup, I like it. Integrating integrating the
- 19:17Speaker 3: minor league in the major leagues and letting everybody, you know,
- 19:21Speaker 3: be able to communicate and and be around each other.
- 19:23Speaker 3: I like it. I think we're seeing all across the
- 19:26Speaker 3: league organizations are taking nutrition more and more serious. As
- 19:31Speaker 3: a husband of somebody who studying nutrition and finis at Miszoo,
- 19:35Speaker 3: I know she's been Elizabeth been trying to have for
- 19:37Speaker 3: a long time, even back to my time with the twins, Like, man,
- 19:40Speaker 3: where's the nutritions, where's the dietician? Where can we what
- 19:43Speaker 3: can we do to you know, get guys eating foods
- 19:46Speaker 3: that might feel their body better. So, you know, as
- 19:49Speaker 3: they've developed that more in the minor leagues, I think
- 19:51Speaker 3: it only makes sense to to put that into spring training,
- 19:54Speaker 3: get guys on those regiments early, and offer those services
- 19:57Speaker 3: for any and everybody, because I think we all know
- 19:59Speaker 3: you're gonna need you know, who knows forty five fifty
- 20:03Speaker 3: players to get through a big league season. So you
- 20:06Speaker 3: want to have everybody on that same regiment in program.
- 20:08Speaker 2: That you came and I can go ahead, Yeah, if
- 20:12Speaker 2: I can add just one thing, it's it's more than
- 20:15Speaker 2: just the players too. When you walk in there, it's
- 20:17Speaker 2: it's staff members. It's you might walk in and Rob
- 20:20Speaker 2: Sorfolio might be sitting there and maybe that's a great
- 20:22Speaker 2: opportunity for somebody to sit down and have a ten
- 20:25Speaker 2: minute conversation with him, Matt Pierrepont, Larry. They even allow
- 20:28Speaker 2: of the broadcasters to go in there if you want to.
- 20:30Speaker 2: So it's uh, I Blue, they do, they do. Heim
- 20:38Speaker 2: Bloom has said this has to be an organization of
- 20:41Speaker 2: collaboration and everybody has to be pulling in the same direction.
- 20:45Speaker 2: And one way to make that happen is to that
- 20:47Speaker 2: everybody's breaking bread together. And I think it's a it's
- 20:50Speaker 2: a cool thing, and it's a very different feeling than
- 20:54Speaker 2: what had existed in this organization previously.
- 20:57Speaker 1: And I don't know if French toast is the thing
- 20:59Speaker 1: that it helps build your body or whatever, but I'm
- 21:02Speaker 1: told and they sat on the broadcast, the French toast
- 21:05Speaker 1: is amazing and Spindly training is still going strong and
- 21:09Speaker 1: if you're looking for tickets, I have some good news
- 21:12Speaker 1: for you.

- 23:32Speaker 1: All right, let's stop a little World Baseball Classic, gentlemen.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Bryce Harker said something that's getting a little bit of coverage,
- 23:40Speaker 1: and I wanted to get your guys, Kate he said
- 23:43Speaker 1: over the weekend, and he raised some eyebrows with this
- 23:46Speaker 1: that obviously the WBC has been great, but it's not
- 23:51Speaker 1: the Olympics. Right. That's no disrespect to the WBC or anything,
- 23:56Speaker 1: but everyone knows that when the Olympics are on, everyone watching.
- 24:00Speaker 1: So basically what he wants, gentlemen, is he wants baseball
- 24:06Speaker 1: to be back in the Olympics, and he's hoping that
- 24:09Speaker 1: with the next CBA that that's taken care of. So
- 24:14Speaker 1: I'll start with you, Kyle. World Baseball Classic gets fun.
- 24:18Speaker 1: It's a ball to watch, and we haven't even seen
- 24:21Speaker 1: the good stuff yet, right. Is it different than the Olympics.
- 24:25Speaker 1: What are your thoughts on that?
- 24:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think I think the main difference
- 24:31Speaker 3: to me is and I'd have to really sit here
- 24:33Speaker 3: and think back to some of these events. You know,
- 24:36Speaker 3: we're obviously adding events here and there, which is interesting.
- 24:38Speaker 4: But.
- 24:40Speaker 3: How many you know you have soccer? I think everybody
- 24:43Speaker 3: loves Olympic soccer. Everybody loves watching Olympic basketball. And I
- 24:47Speaker 3: say this students because team sports really I think elevate
- 24:52Speaker 3: in the Olympics and and add something outside of the
- 24:57Speaker 3: individual achievement that you get to accomplish for your country.
- 25:03Speaker 3: So yeah, I mean, I I agree with Bryce. I think,
- 25:05Speaker 3: you know, having the Olympics ad baseball back would be
- 25:09Speaker 3: awesome and you know, doing something like hockey or you know,
- 25:14Speaker 3: you take a couple of week hiatus and you get
- 25:16Speaker 3: to send you know, the best from from MLB uh
- 25:20Speaker 3: to play for their country, similar to the WBC here.
- 25:24Speaker 3: You know, I think it'd be really awesome. And I
- 25:27Speaker 3: don't I understand it being the middle of the season
- 25:30Speaker 3: all right, but other than the middle of the season,
- 25:33Speaker 3: spring training is some of the most important time for
- 25:36Speaker 3: baseball team to get ready for the year. So the
- 25:39Speaker 3: excuse of oh, well that's spring training, we can send
- 25:42Speaker 3: guys because they're just getting ready, Uh No, I think
- 25:45Speaker 3: we're seeing the Detroit Tigers and Trek Scooble having to
- 25:48Speaker 3: really weigh a decision to play again or not in
- 25:50Speaker 3: the WBC because it is spring training. So you know,
- 25:55Speaker 3: I think that'd be really exciting to see baseball back
- 25:59Speaker 3: in the Olympics and have they'll be guys player.
- 26:02Speaker 1: So the rush gifts begger though for playing in the
- 26:08Speaker 1: Olympics matt in the middle of the season, just because
- 26:11Speaker 1: there's less time to recuperate if something goes awry, someone
- 26:15Speaker 1: tweaks them at the World Baseball Class we've seen it
- 26:18Speaker 1: go the other way where it's worse than that, but
- 26:21Speaker 1: you do have more of a cushion. So what do
- 26:24Speaker 1: you think then, in terms of word baseball will land
- 26:27Speaker 1: on taking a break for the Olympics. I'd be all
- 26:31Speaker 1: for it because I think it's cool. I'm good for
- 26:33Speaker 1: the game. What's your take.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I've always said that the WBC happens during the
- 26:37Speaker 2: least terrible time to have it, because there's just not
- 26:40Speaker 2: a good time for it actually to take place. In concept,
- 26:43Speaker 2: the idea of taking a couple weeks off to have
- 26:46Speaker 2: major leaguers in the Olympics, that seems awesome. It's in
- 26:50Speaker 2: my lifetime. Even though the baseball was previously in the
- 26:53Speaker 2: Olympics and it's going to begin in my lifetime, we
- 26:55Speaker 2: haven't seen big leaguers in the Olympics. I think the
- 26:59Speaker 2: Australian catcher Nils, if I remember hitting him correctly, he
- 27:03Speaker 2: didn't sign with a major League baseball team one year
- 27:05Speaker 2: just so he could play in the Olympics. I can
- 27:07Speaker 2: remember one year there was a Cardinals triple a guy
- 27:10Speaker 2: who won a medal in the Olympics because they allowed
- 27:13Speaker 2: minor leaguers to go. I remember being at a game
- 27:15Speaker 2: once where he was being presented or not presented, but
- 27:18Speaker 2: had his medal on before the game. But to actually
- 27:22Speaker 2: stop things for like Kyle said, for two weeks, like
- 27:25Speaker 2: NHL does. I do wonder about the logistics about that.
- 27:28Speaker 2: How does that impact the guys who are not playing
- 27:30Speaker 2: the Olympics. What are they going to do for those
- 27:32Speaker 2: two weeks. What's that ramp up period going to be
- 27:34Speaker 2: when they come back. So I love the concept of
- 27:38Speaker 2: major leaguers in the Olympics. It would be so awesome.
- 27:41Speaker 2: The actual mechanism to those things taking place, I do
- 27:46Speaker 2: question if that's going to happen, And yeah, it would
- 27:48Speaker 2: have to be a part of the next CBA, and
- 27:51Speaker 2: there's so many things that need to be worked through
- 27:53Speaker 2: on the CBA, So I wonder if they even get
- 27:55Speaker 2: to that. And deep down, how do owners feel about
- 27:59Speaker 2: the idea of maybe losing some of their guys in
- 28:02Speaker 2: the middle of the season to play really important games.
- 28:05Speaker 2: And you know a lot of times Major League Baseball
- 28:07Speaker 2: owners operate motivated by fear, and I would just think
- 28:11Speaker 2: that there'd be a lot of fear from the owners
- 28:14Speaker 2: on what that might look like.
- 28:16Speaker 3: I think it does. It helps that it'd be summer
- 28:19Speaker 3: of twenty eight, you know, I don't think that's something
- 28:21Speaker 3: that you have to get into the CBA right now.
- 28:23Speaker 3: I think that's something that you can add in, you know,
- 28:26Speaker 3: maybe in the offseason after twenty seven, you know, amended
- 28:29Speaker 3: a little bit and maybe just do a one type thing,
- 28:31Speaker 3: although you know it would technically be two summer Olympics.
- 28:35Speaker 3: You know, maybe it's something that you know, the Olympics
- 28:37Speaker 3: doesn't have baseball in it in twenty thirty soth Might
- 28:39Speaker 3: that matter? But I think that's something that we can
- 28:42Speaker 3: add in. I also believe that owners talk to owners
- 28:46Speaker 3: of other franchises, and it'd be interesting to see what
- 28:48Speaker 3: hockey owners think. Interesting to see, like, you know, are
- 28:51Speaker 3: they really worried about the injuries? Of course they are,
- 28:55Speaker 3: Are they or are they benefited by the game growing
- 28:59Speaker 3: and having eyes on the sport. I don't know. If
- 29:02Speaker 3: you're the team that your player gets hurt, obviously you're
- 29:05Speaker 3: disappointed and there might not be anything you can do
- 29:09Speaker 3: about that other than I haven't played, but you know,
- 29:12Speaker 3: NHL's made that decision, and you know, it'd be interesting
- 29:15Speaker 3: to see if if MLB would would do that as well.
- 29:19Speaker 3: But if they're gonna send minor leaguers, you're still taking
- 29:23Speaker 3: a chance that that guy's hurt. Are you sending only
- 29:25Speaker 3: players that have zero chance of being called up?
- 29:29Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 29:30Speaker 3: It seems interesting, but I hear all your points. I agree,
- 29:33Speaker 3: it's it's tough. I think if you I don't know,
- 29:36Speaker 3: maybe the Olympics don't fall over the All Star break, but
- 29:39Speaker 3: if it does, then you know you're really talking about
- 29:42Speaker 3: you've already gotten five days work in there, you're really
- 29:44Speaker 3: losing another six days seven. Okay, let's talk about just
- 29:48Speaker 3: like in COVID, you can't take the playoffs too far
- 29:51Speaker 3: in November. So now maybe you're talking about, all right,
- 29:54Speaker 3: this is the one time that we're going to go
- 29:55Speaker 3: from one sixty two to one fifty, and we're gonna
- 29:59Speaker 3: go ahead and shrink this season so we can get
- 30:01Speaker 3: you know, ten games in for you know, for the Olympics.
- 30:05Speaker 3: I don't know. I'm not saying it's a great solution,
- 30:07Speaker 3: but I think there's I don't think the owners would
- 30:09Speaker 3: ever go for it one less games for them to
- 30:13Speaker 3: drive revenue.
- 30:14Speaker 1: And also, if let me ask you this, Kyle, if
- 30:17Speaker 1: you owned a team, let's say you and Lance and
- 30:19Speaker 1: Holiday pulled your money and bought a team, and then
- 30:23Speaker 1: your best players that you need to get you to
- 30:27Speaker 1: a World Series want to play. Would you say, go ahead,
- 30:31Speaker 1: go for it?
- 30:31Speaker 3: Would you jim Jimmy, I'm not saying this as matter
- 30:38Speaker 3: of fact, they would love to load the number of games.
- 30:42Speaker 3: I think. I think they would love to go from
- 30:44Speaker 3: one sixty two to one fifty two and do something
- 30:47Speaker 3: different or one fifty I think that is something that
- 30:52Speaker 3: absolutely is on the table. So I don't think lowering
- 30:56Speaker 3: the game number is it because I I think they
- 31:01Speaker 3: I don't know. That's probably for another another edition of
- 31:04Speaker 3: Cardinal Territory, but because they've already talked about that. So
- 31:08Speaker 3: I probably didn't answer the rest of your question, So
- 31:10Speaker 3: I apologize for not catching it. I got one track.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Would you do it? Would you do it? Would you
- 31:15Speaker 1: risk for your player getting the hurt?
- 31:20Speaker 3: So I guess the question becomes, is it any different
- 31:24Speaker 3: if a guy blows out in spring training and you
- 31:27Speaker 3: miss him for the whole year, or a guy gets
- 31:30Speaker 3: hurt in the WBC, or a guy gets hurt April
- 31:33Speaker 3: first and misses sixty days, or a guy gets hurt
- 31:36Speaker 3: July fifteenth playing in the Olympics. More than likely, unless
- 31:41Speaker 3: it's some crazy injury of getting hit and you break something,
- 31:47Speaker 3: there's a chance that that injury was going to happen
- 31:49Speaker 3: if it's a soft connective tissue injury that was caused
- 31:52Speaker 3: by repetition. So trying to prevent injuries. Jim, how have
- 31:57Speaker 3: we done with preventing injuries?
- 32:01Speaker 1: I asked you a question. I'm gonna I'm gonna move
- 32:04Speaker 1: on to Matt. Matt. Let's say you, Tom Ackerman.
- 32:08Speaker 3: I'm good with it. Jim, I'm good with it. All right.
- 32:11Speaker 3: You want to hurt, I'm good with it. Okay, let's go.
- 32:16Speaker 1: From a fan perspective. I want to see it now
- 32:18Speaker 1: if I if I were running the program, I might
- 32:21Speaker 1: have a different point of view. Matt. Let's say you
- 32:24Speaker 1: and Tom Ackerman and the rest of the big money
- 32:28Speaker 1: people at Camawax throw Steve Moore in there, decided to
- 32:32Speaker 1: buy a major league team, and now it's on you
- 32:35Speaker 1: whether or not you are for letting your players go
- 32:39Speaker 1: to the Olympics and maybe playing some qualifying games somewhere
- 32:44Speaker 1: one of your guys gets hurt. Would you be for
- 32:46Speaker 1: it if it were your team.
- 32:48Speaker 2: If it's my team, I'm probably being a little bit
- 32:51Speaker 2: more selective at who I want participating. There's gonna be
- 32:54Speaker 2: some individuals that I just I don't want it. There's
- 32:57Speaker 2: somebody's got an injury history.
- 32:58Speaker 1: And with the WBE, you.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Know, teams are not supposed to say no to players
- 33:03Speaker 2: unless there's an injury issue, and then at that point
- 33:06Speaker 2: the teams have a little bit more rights. And we've
- 33:08Speaker 2: seen the insurance as you pop up as well. But
- 33:10Speaker 2: I again, I love the idea of it, but no,
- 33:13Speaker 2: if I own a team, there's gonna be some guys
- 33:16Speaker 2: on the team that I probably do not want participating
- 33:18Speaker 2: in the Olympics right in the middle of the season.
- 33:22Speaker 3: By the way, I know we talked about WBC being
- 33:24Speaker 3: in the best at the worst time, right, but in
- 33:27Speaker 3: the month of April, if you lose a player for
- 33:29Speaker 3: most of the month of April or some April, you
- 33:32Speaker 3: can lose a division in April. You can't win a
- 33:35Speaker 3: division in April. So losing those guys early is just
- 33:39Speaker 3: as bad. Sometimes because then you get to the end
- 33:41Speaker 3: of the season and you wish you had fifteen more
- 33:42Speaker 3: games of you name the player. So I hear you,
- 33:46Speaker 3: injury stick. The Olympics are awesome.
- 33:50Speaker 1: I understand. I just think there's more cushion when it happened.
- 33:52Speaker 3: Drill.
- 33:52Speaker 1: All right, that's gonna do it for this edition of
- 33:55Speaker 1: Cardinal Territory. Matt, thank you for joy us Kyle, always
- 33:59Speaker 1: a pleasure to see you and having you dodge my questions.
- 34:02Speaker 1: We'll see you next time for the next episode. Hopefully
- 34:05Speaker 1: that one won't suck.
