- 0:02Onward she passed, seeking the soul's Mystic cave.
- 0:06At first she stepped into a night of God.
- 0:10The light was quenched that helps the labouring world, The
- 0:15power that struggles and stumbles in our life.
- 0:19This inefficient mind gave up its thoughts, the striving
- 0:23heart, its unavailing hopes. All knowledge failed, and the
- 0:28ideas, forms and wisdom screened in awe.
- 0:32Her lowly head feeling a truth too great for thought or speech.
- 0:38Formless, ineffable, forever the same, an innocent and holy
- 0:45ignorance, adored like one who worships formless God.
- 0:49The unseen light she could not claim nor own.
- 0:54In a simple purity of emptiness, her mind knelt down before the
- 0:58unknowable. All was abolished, save her
- 1:02naked self and the prostate yearnings of her surrendered
- 1:07heart. There was no strength in her, no
- 1:12pride of force. The lofty burning of desire had
- 1:16sunk. Ashamed of vanity, of separate
- 1:19self, the hope of spiritual greatness fled.
- 1:23Salvation. She asked not, nor a heavenly
- 1:26crown. Humility seemed now too proud a
- 1:30state. Herself was nothing, God alone
- 1:35was all. Yet God she knew not, but only
- 1:39knew He was. A sacred darkness brooded now
- 1:43within the world was a deep darkness, great and nude.
- 1:49This void held more than all the teeming worlds, this blank felt
- 1:53more than all the time has borne this dark new, dumbly, immensely
- 1:59the unknown. But all was formless, voiceless,
- 2:05infinite, as might a shadow walk in a shadowy scene, a small knot
- 2:11passing through a mightier knot, a knight of person in a bare
- 2:17outline crossing a fathomless, impersonal night.
- 2:21Silent she moved, empty and absolute.
- 2:26In endless time her soul reached a wide end.
- 2:30The spaceless vast became her spirit's place.
- 2:34At last a change approached. The emptiness broke.
- 2:39A wave rippled within. The world had stirred once more.
- 2:45Her inner self became her space. There was felt a blissful
- 2:50nearness to the goal. Heaven leaned low to kiss the
- 2:54sacred hill. The air trembled with passion
- 2:57and delight. A rose of splendor on a tree of
- 3:01dreams. The face of dawn out of moon.
- 3:04Twilight grew. Day came, priest of a sacrifice
- 3:09of joy into the worshipping silence of her world.
- 3:14He carried immortal lustre as his robe trailed heaven like a
- 3:19purple scarf, and wore, as his Vermilion cast mark a red sun as
- 3:25if an old remembered dream come true.
- 3:28She recognized in her prophetic mind the imperishable lustre of
- 3:33that sky, the tremulous sweetness of that happy air, and
- 3:39covered from mine's view and life's approach the Mystic
- 3:44cavern and the sacred hill, and knew the dwelling of her secret
- 3:50soul. As if in some Elysian occult
- 3:54depth, Truth's last retreat from thought's profaning touch, as if
- 4:01in a rock temple solitude hid God's refuge from an ignorant
- 4:06worshipping world. It lay withdrawn even from
- 4:10life's inner sense, receding from the entangled heart's
- 4:14desire. A marvellous brooding twilight
- 4:17met the eyes, and a holy stillness held that voiceless
- 4:22space. An awful dimness wrapped the
- 4:25great rock doors carved in the massive stone of matters Trance
- 4:312 Golden serpents round the lentil curved, enveloping it
- 4:36with their pure and dreadful strength, looked out with
- 4:40wisdoms deep and luminous eyes. An eagle covered it with wide
- 4:46conquering wings. Flames of self lost immobile
- 4:50reverie. Doves crowded the Gray musing
- 4:54cornices like sculptured postures of white bosom to peace
- 5:00across the threshold Sleep. She entered in and found herself
- 5:05amid great figures of gods, conscious in stone and living
- 5:11without breath, watching with fixed regard the soul of man,
- 5:16executive figures of the cosmic self world, symbols of immutable
- 5:22potency on the walls, covered with significant shapes, looked
- 5:28at her the life scene of man and beast and the high meaning of
- 5:33the life of gods. The power and necessity of these
- 5:36numberless worlds and faces of beings and stretches of world
- 5:41space spoke the succinct and inexhaustible iradic message of
- 5:47the climbing plains. In their immensitude signing
- 5:52Infinity, they were the extension of the Self of God and
- 5:57housed impassively, receiving all His figures and his small
- 6:03and mighty acts and His passion and His birth and life and death
- 6:09and His return. To immortality, to the abiding
- 6:14and eternal is their clime, to the pure existence everywhere
- 6:18the same, To the sheer consciousness and the absolute
- 6:22force and the unimaginable and formless bliss, To the mirth in
- 6:28time and the timeless mystery of the Triune Being who is all and
- 6:33One, and yet is no one but Himself a part.
- 6:39There was no step of breathing men, no sound, only the living
- 6:44nearness of the soul. Yet all the world's and God
- 6:49Himself were there, for every symbol was a reality and brought
- 6:54the presence which had given it life.
- 6:58All this she saw and inly felt and knew, not by some thought of
- 7:03mind, but by the Self. A light not born of sun or moon
- 7:09or fire, a light that dwelt within and saw within, shedding
- 7:14an intimate visibility, made secrecy more revealing than the
- 7:18Word. Our sight and sense are a
- 7:21fallible gaze and touch, and only the Spirit's vision is
- 7:26wholly true. As thus she passed in that
- 7:30mysterious place, through room and room, through door and rock
- 7:34hewn door, she felt herself made one with all she saw, a sealed
- 7:41identity within her. Woke she knew herself the
- 7:45beloved of the Supreme. These gods and goddesses were he
- 7:50and she. The Mother was she of beauty and
- 7:53delight. The word in Brahma's vast
- 7:56creating clasp, the world poescence on almighty Shiva's
- 8:01lap, the Master and the Mother of all lives watching the
- 8:06world's their twin regard had made, And Krishna and Radha
- 8:10forever entwined in bliss. The adorer and adored Self lost
- 8:15and won. In the last chamber, on a golden
- 8:20seat one sat whose shape no vision could define.
- 8:25Only one felt the world's unattainable fount, a power of
- 8:31which she was a straying force, and invisible beauty, goal of
- 8:36the world's desire, a son of which all knowledge is a beam, a
- 8:41greatness without whom no life could be.
- 8:45Thence all departed into silent self, and all became formless
- 8:52and pure and bare. Then through a tunnel dug in the
- 8:55last rock she came out, where there shone a deathless sun, a
- 9:01house was there, all made of flame and light.
- 9:05And crossing a wall of doorless living fire, there suddenly she
- 9:11met her secret soul.
