Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Thursday FT. How we doing? Brzezinski, Kratz, Braun. So I
- 0:09Speaker 1: just came off Fair Territory, AJ, with your buddy Ken.
- 0:13Speaker 1: And he had just put out a story on Quetel Marte.
- 0:17Speaker 1: We're not going to spend a whole segment on it.
- 0:20Speaker 1: We've spoken about him enough, but he does have a
- 0:22Speaker 1: new story and there's some good new details out in there.
- 0:25Speaker 1: I encourage everyone to check out Fair after our show
- 0:27Speaker 1: for a good 10 minutes on some things that I
- 0:30Speaker 1: guarantee you don't know. And AJ, that includes some teammates
- 0:33Speaker 1: behind the scenes kind of been like typical Cattell. I
- 0:35Speaker 1: know some have publicly come out and defended him, but
- 0:38Speaker 1: the question I had for you is what is the
- 0:42Speaker 1: food room for players? And I ask this because within
- 0:46Speaker 1: the story, it mentions how he'll sometimes have his friends
- 0:50Speaker 1: join him in the food room to hang out and eat.
- 0:52Speaker 2: What do you mean friends? Like just friends off the street?
- 0:58Speaker 1: Friends not on the team.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Come on. Oof. Yeah, that's– Yeah, guys.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I've very rarely seen that happen. I very rarely see– Listen, kids, dads.
- 1:13Speaker 4: Oof.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Yes, but just random friends?
- 1:17Speaker 3: No.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Random friends.
- 1:22Speaker 4: I need it. You can take me off. I'm going
- 1:23Speaker 4: to go read Ken's article right now. I'm mad.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I'm telling you, it's– the best article I've probably read
- 1:29Speaker 1: this year in terms of getting really inside what's going on.
- 1:32Speaker 1: You don't get every single detail yet. That'll still come out. Right.
- 1:35Speaker 1: But like who he is, how he was telling teammates like, Oh,
- 1:38Speaker 1: you don't need me right now. Cause it wasn't playing well.
- 1:40Speaker 1: And then he, he retreats when there's certain moments hitting
- 1:43Speaker 1: him and he stayed in the hotel room. It wouldn't
- 1:45Speaker 1: come out. Like there's, I mean, it's not like this
- 1:48Speaker 1: crazy drama. I mean, it is drama, but it's not
- 1:52Speaker 1: like they're getting them fights or whatever. It's just, he disappears.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Teammates are pissed. And yeah, there is a level of
- 1:58Speaker 1: star treatment. It is like the perfect story to explain
- 2:02Speaker 1: how this is a business. And for them, they're going
- 2:05Speaker 1: three X surplus value on this player. We got to
- 2:08Speaker 1: put up with the crap. That's what I got out
- 2:10Speaker 1: of it.
- 2:11Speaker 3: No.
- 2:12Speaker 2: And I, and listen, I think Cattell Marte is really
- 2:15Speaker 2: good player, but can I just say this? He's not
- 2:19Speaker 2: Barry Bonds. He's not Miguel Cabrera. He's not, I'm not saying, Listen,
- 2:25Speaker 2: Miguel Cabrera was not like that. But, I mean, I
- 2:27Speaker 2: played with Barry Bonds. I saw what he did, right?
- 2:29Speaker 2: But he was also, you know, the best hitter I've
- 2:33Speaker 2: ever seen by far, right? He's not– I played with
- 2:37Speaker 2: Adrian Beltre in the Hall of Fame. He would never
- 2:38Speaker 2: have done this in a million years. I played with,
- 2:41Speaker 2: you know, on the Red Sox, David Ortiz. He wouldn't
- 2:44Speaker 2: do this. He wouldn't have random people sitting in the
- 2:47Speaker 2: lunchroom with us. Now, if you went to the hotel
- 2:49Speaker 2: bar after a game, would David have a lot of people?
- 2:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:52Speaker 2: But the clubhouse is supposed to be kind of– one
- 2:55Speaker 2: of those places where you don't do this, it's supposed
- 2:57Speaker 2: to be just for people that have earned their way there. Now,
- 3:00Speaker 2: dad's sure. Kids.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 3:03Speaker 2: People off the street before guys get there. It's very
- 3:06Speaker 2: hard to bring guys in there once the stuff starts,
- 3:10Speaker 2: because that's when you start getting tight for the game.
- 3:13Speaker 2: So to hear, I mean, was this before the game? Again,
- 3:15Speaker 2: I haven't read Ken's article after the game.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Still, it's like, you know, if you're, if you're on
- 3:21Speaker 2: the road and you know, you've got to catch a
- 3:25Speaker 2: bus and you have seven random people. I don't even
- 3:27Speaker 2: know how many it was. Three random people sitting there.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Every guy on that team, and I think Kress would
- 3:31Speaker 2: agree with me on this, is going, who the hell
- 3:33Speaker 2: is that guy? Who's that person sitting there? Like who's
- 3:38Speaker 2: random guy going for his third time through the buffet line?
- 3:47Speaker 4: I loved one of the best lines ever. Anybody could
- 3:50Speaker 4: say it, American or Latino. They'd be like somebody random
- 3:54Speaker 4: or like a pitcher gets in the line before the
- 3:57Speaker 4: guys who play. They'd be like, oh, shocker, first in line,
- 4:01Speaker 4: didn't even play. Like don't be a spread killer. Definitely
- 4:04Speaker 4: don't bring spread killers into the spread room. That's for sure.
- 4:08Speaker 1: And third time through is not allowed in our sport anymore.
- 4:10Speaker 1: You can't go third time through in anything.
- 4:12Speaker 4: You're talking about.
- 4:14Speaker 2: And by the way, I've told this story before. Mookie,
- 4:18Speaker 2: when he first got called up, Mookie Betts, With the
- 4:20Speaker 2: Red Sox, we were there, and his cousin was in the–
- 4:24Speaker 2: it was before a game. He's just crushing a beer,
- 4:27Speaker 2: and we're all like, who in the hell is this guy?
- 4:29Speaker 2: Random guy. This is after the chicken and beer stuff
- 4:31Speaker 2: in Boston. Who's this random guy crushing beers before the game?
- 4:34Speaker 2: It was Mookie's cousin. He didn't know any better. Someone
- 4:36Speaker 2: told him. Mookie didn't do it anymore, right? But it's just–
- 4:41Speaker 2: someone has to– apparently no one has ever told Cattell.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Maybe Cattell thinks he's able to do this. I don't know.
- 4:47Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 4:47Speaker 2: It's just crazy that this is what's coming out now.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Yeah. I cannot encourage people enough to read the story,
- 4:56Speaker 1: but also to check out the 10 minutes in fair
- 4:59Speaker 1: later on.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Also, Scott, hold on. We talked about it yesterday. You
- 5:03Speaker 2: weren't on, but Kratz and I talked about it. Tori Lavello.
- 5:06Speaker 2: He's like, how can we soften the blow back in?
- 5:09Speaker 2: Soften what blow? He's the one that left the team.
- 5:12Speaker 2: He's the one that didn't have an explanation. What blow
- 5:14Speaker 2: is there to soften? Like, make him– I said this
- 5:17Speaker 2: a couple days ago. Make him apologize, and he's got
- 5:20Speaker 2: to mean it because otherwise– Guys in that room, they
- 5:23Speaker 2: look at you differently.
- 5:24Speaker 4: Am I wrong, Kratz? No, you're not wrong at all.
- 5:27Speaker 4: And we were not wrong when we were saying Tori
- 5:30Speaker 4: Lavello had to come to his aid and say things. Oh,
- 5:33Speaker 4: he's not, you know, there's no issue with him as
- 5:36Speaker 4: a teammate. Liar. Liar. Clearly liar. This is what's coming out.
- 5:43Speaker 1: That to me is part of the problem too. It's like,
- 5:44Speaker 1: it's one thing to not say much, but if you're,
- 5:48Speaker 1: trying to talk them up and I know he's not,
- 5:50Speaker 1: you know, yelling at people, he's not picking fights, whatever,
- 5:53Speaker 1: but there are different layers of being a good and
- 5:55Speaker 1: a bad teammate. And I wanted to ask you guys
- 5:57Speaker 1: that right from the jump, because Ken and I talked
- 5:59Speaker 1: about it from what we observed from the reporting perspective. Yeah.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I don't see random people sitting around in a food room,
- 6:06Speaker 1: hanging out. That's not a thing on dad's day. Sure.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Scott, I'm scared to death as a guy that played
- 6:13Speaker 2: for almost 20 years in the big leagues. I walk
- 6:15Speaker 2: into the clubhouse and I have my Fox and, you know,
- 6:18Speaker 2: my rights holders badge on, I'm scared to death to
- 6:21Speaker 2: like stand in the wrong place or be in there
- 6:25Speaker 2: too long. Or I would never sit in a chair.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I remember I was somewhere, I think it was spring training.
- 6:32Speaker 2: And I think it was Ashcraft or one of them
- 6:35Speaker 2: was like, hey, come sit down next to me at
- 6:36Speaker 2: the Pirates. And I'm like, dude, I would never do
- 6:38Speaker 2: that in a million years, sit in a chair of
- 6:40Speaker 2: one of the players. Like no chance, dude. If one
- 6:43Speaker 2: of the guys said, hey, come grab lunch with me
- 6:45Speaker 2: in the food room, I'd be like, Hell no, dude.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I'll go to McDonald's.
- 6:51Speaker 1: That's exactly what we talked about to a T on,
- 6:53Speaker 1: on fair with Ken. Like we passed the food room
- 6:56Speaker 1: and man, that is the player space and up some
- 7:00Speaker 1: staff members. So. Hey, what's up SeatGeek? What do we
- 7:04Speaker 1: have for the weekend? Let's look at some seats that
- 7:06Speaker 1: we would like to acquire this weekend on the SeatGeek app.
- 7:10Speaker 1: There's some good matchups coming up this weekend. I know
- 7:12Speaker 1: we've already talked about Yanks Red Sox a bit, but
- 7:14Speaker 1: let's go over a few others. Who wants to throw
- 7:16Speaker 1: it out there first?
- 7:18Speaker 2: I'm going to be in New York, so Yankees, Red Sox.
- 7:20Speaker 2: I'm all about Yankees, Red Sox.
- 7:23Speaker 1: So that's you.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Red Sox, Yankees, depending on which way you want to
- 7:26Speaker 2: call it.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Sure.
- 7:29Speaker 4: We can tell who you like the most.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Yep.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Yep.
- 7:32Speaker 4: We can tell. Homer. Yankees. Yankees fan. Just so Red
- 7:36Speaker 4: Sox fans know, AJ presents the.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I would go no on that one, Crotty. I would
- 7:40Speaker 2: go no.
- 7:41Speaker 4: On that one. He was born in New York, so clearly,
- 7:45Speaker 4: which he claims all the time– I mean, Milwaukee in–
- 7:52Speaker 4: do they leave the Brewers now? Where does Milwaukee go?
- 7:54Speaker 4: I'm trying to think. Now I'm blanking.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Aren't they playing the Mariners?
- 8:01Speaker 4: Yeah, but is it home? No, it's in Seattle this weekend.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Okay.
- 8:09Speaker 4: I'm not refreshing. My screen is not refreshing.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Anyways, I want to go see Scooble pitch tomorrow night.
- 8:16Speaker 2: In Detroit. How about that? That's a great one. I
- 8:19Speaker 2: want to go to that one.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Great seed on Stubble in Detroit. Miz against Shane McClanahan.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Or no, sorry. Sorry, not Miz. Mize. Casey Mize is
- 8:32Speaker 1: coming back from the whole slip the other day. Shane McClanahan,
- 8:35Speaker 1: Padres race. Good playoff implications there, especially for San Diego.
- 8:39Speaker 1: It's Hancock and Cease on Friday in Toronto. I'm mixing
- 8:42Speaker 1: up all the matchups. It's Toronto and Seattle. in toronto
- 8:45Speaker 1: rangers and brewers which again has many playoff implications brewers
- 8:50Speaker 1: now six and a half games clear of the cubs
- 8:52Speaker 1: in the division but the rangers need to put some
- 8:55Speaker 1: wins together if they want to keep the al west
- 8:57Speaker 1: alive so just like get rid of the first 30
- 8:58Speaker 1: seconds of us just coming up with random matchups that
- 9:01Speaker 1: didn't exist and listen to the last minute what which
- 9:08Speaker 1: one are you giving me a face we didn't lie
- 9:11Speaker 1: yeah white socks matchup right No, I know. Twins. Hey,
- 9:16Speaker 1: Walker Jenkins, 4-11 in August, home run every other game
- 9:19Speaker 1: the last two weeks. It would be cool if you'd
- 9:21Speaker 1: call him up because you kind of need him. But
- 9:23Speaker 1: that's just me. 10% off MLB tickets on SeatGeek using
- 9:26Speaker 1: the code TERRITORY10. Click the link in the description of
- 9:28Speaker 1: this episode. If you'd like to save that little code
- 9:31Speaker 1: and use it another time or use it tonight, this weekend,
- 9:34Speaker 1: go hit a game. Have fun. Why are we starting
- 9:39Speaker 1: with the Reds and Giants? Well, I'll tell you. First off,
- 9:41Speaker 1: there was a crazy comeback. Second of all, Tony Vitello
- 9:44Speaker 1: went off at the beginning of the game. And third
- 9:47Speaker 1: of all, one of the big hits was a Gino
- 9:49Speaker 1: Suarez grand slam from Cincinnati, and he might be on
- 9:52Speaker 1: another ball club in the next couple of days. Yes,
- 9:54Speaker 1: the dump deadline is nearing and Gino Suarez and or
- 9:58Speaker 1: TJ Friedel might be coming to another team near you
- 10:02Speaker 1: now they might not get claimed but do you want
- 10:04Speaker 1: to start with the game or do you want to
- 10:05Speaker 1: start with the fact that the reds might be able
- 10:07Speaker 1: to save a little bit of cash over the next
- 10:09Speaker 1: couple days.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Let's start with the game because it was a crazy
- 10:13Speaker 2: game let's let's Let's start with that, and then we'll
- 10:16Speaker 2: go from there. Because I think the game was crazy
- 10:18Speaker 2: because it was, what, 6-0, and they're up 6, and
- 10:20Speaker 2: they scored 7 in the ninth, including a Gino Suarez
- 10:24Speaker 2: grand slam. So I think that and Tony Vitello getting ejected.
- 10:27Speaker 2: I don't know. That was a crazy game. I mean,
- 10:30Speaker 2: I know it's two teams that aren't going anywhere, but
- 10:32Speaker 2: here's the no-check swing, check swing. And just think, if
- 10:36Speaker 2: they call that a check swing, maybe Gino Suarez doesn't
- 10:39Speaker 2: get the chance to hit that grand slam.
- 10:41Speaker 4: I don't know. I mean, Tony said he had enough.
- 10:47Speaker 4: He didn't want to see this game. And he was right.
- 10:51Speaker 4: He didn't know what to expect coming out. But, hey,
- 10:54Speaker 4: we'll have check swing challenges coming up soon, so in
- 10:58Speaker 4: a few years. But to me, the comeback, I love
- 11:03Speaker 4: seeing the fight out of a team that is out
- 11:06Speaker 4: of it. Obviously, I'm not saying that they think they're
- 11:09Speaker 4: out of it, but the Reds are out of it.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Whether they think or not, when... They made the move
- 11:14Speaker 4: when the front office made the move to save $ 3, 700, 000
- 11:19Speaker 4: by putting Friedel's $ 700, 000 up for the last month of
- 11:23Speaker 4: the season and Eugenio Suarez's $ 3 million up. The front
- 11:28Speaker 4: office is out of it. It kind of sucks because
- 11:31Speaker 4: after a game like this, you're pushed hard. They're not
- 11:34Speaker 4: thinking they're going to make the playoffs. I get that.
- 11:36Speaker 4: But as a player, you never give up. And it
- 11:38Speaker 4: feels like the front office gave up for in my opinion,
- 11:42Speaker 4: what comes down to a very small sum of money.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a weird trade deadline. They didn't really
- 11:47Speaker 1: do anything. And people were like, you didn't get any
- 11:50Speaker 1: calls or offers for any of these guys. And it
- 11:53Speaker 1: sounded like they did, but it wasn't what they wanted, right?
- 11:55Speaker 1: Like maybe it's a prospect they didn't really value. And
- 11:57Speaker 1: I'm like, isn't somebody who's even close to your radar
- 12:01Speaker 1: better than nothing? Especially when you're trying to say, oh, well,
- 12:04Speaker 1: you know, they're better off with us. I mean, are
- 12:06Speaker 1: they better off with you? Because you're not in it
- 12:08Speaker 1: this year. So if you were selling and you're trying
- 12:10Speaker 1: to sell, I don't know every conversation going on behind
- 12:12Speaker 1: the scenes, AJ, but now you're willing to give up
- 12:15Speaker 1: players like that for nothing.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Right.
- 12:17Speaker 1: That's just a salary dump at this point. It's okay.
- 12:20Speaker 1: I mean, they're not in it. So if it's going
- 12:22Speaker 1: to save them a few, like Gino Suarez is getting
- 12:24Speaker 1: three mil the rest of the year and maybe a
- 12:26Speaker 1: team like Seattle, or we talked about Milwaukee before the show.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I don't know if that's totally a fit. I know
- 12:31Speaker 1: Gino's having a bad year. And then Friedel is having
- 12:34Speaker 1: a really bad year, but, Maybe, and if those two
- 12:37Speaker 1: do get picked up, it would save the Reds almost
- 12:39Speaker 1: $ 4 million, and you would hope they spend that on
- 12:42Speaker 1: someone else in the offseason.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Will they, though? That's the $ 7 billion question or whatever.
- 12:50Speaker 2: I got sorry about to have a collective bargaining problem.
- 12:52Speaker 2: But why would Seattle not pick up this guy? They
- 12:55Speaker 2: love this guy. They can get him for $ 3 million
- 12:57Speaker 2: for the last month, even if he's a bat off
- 12:59Speaker 2: the bench. I mean, right now, I think the last
- 13:01Speaker 2: time I checked, J.P. Crawford was playing third. I'm not
- 13:03Speaker 2: sure the last time I– I did a Mariners game.
- 13:07Speaker 2: He was playing third. So they just lost Emerson, right?
- 13:12Speaker 2: I just, why would they not? That seems like, it
- 13:14Speaker 2: almost seems too perfect. Therefore, it won't happen, right? That
- 13:17Speaker 2: the Mariners wouldn't pick him up and say, hey, you've
- 13:20Speaker 2: been here. We love you here. The fans love you here.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Come give us a great month and hit some homers
- 13:25Speaker 2: and try to get us back to the postseason and
- 13:27Speaker 2: make another run.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Yeah, and yesterday, real quick, Crawford was that short, right?
- 13:33Speaker 2: Yeah, because Emerson got hurt.
- 13:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, Emerson's out for the year, right? So Crawford
- 13:40Speaker 1: can go back, you know, remember the story earlier this year,
- 13:43Speaker 1: Crawford's like, Hey, I'm down to do third. I want
- 13:44Speaker 1: to be with the Mariners long-term. I know we got
- 13:46Speaker 1: Emerson and Cole Young coming through here. So now Emerson's
- 13:49Speaker 1: out for the rest of the season. And, you know,
- 13:52Speaker 1: for example, yesterday, oh, you know, who was playing third
- 13:57Speaker 1: base yesterday in that game against Philadelphia? Yeah.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Weston Wilson.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Wasn't he on FT? Yeah, Weston Wilson. Remember when he
- 14:07Speaker 1: was first on FT after Weston Wilson, after he had
- 14:10Speaker 1: a great story? But point is, and this is nothing
- 14:11Speaker 1: against Weston, Gino Suarez for a little bit of pop there,
- 14:15Speaker 1: returned to Seattle, find it again. Remember also how good
- 14:18Speaker 1: he was during the regular season last year and had
- 14:20Speaker 1: a couple moments in the playoffs. Might be worth $ 3
- 14:22Speaker 1: million if the Mariners can add him and make the playoffs.
- 14:25Speaker 4: $ 3 million. I don't know. I don't see anybody picking
- 14:29Speaker 4: him up because of the price tag. Now, just because
- 14:32Speaker 4: he's on waivers, people need to know he's not getting released.
- 14:35Speaker 4: He can stay with the Reds if nobody claims him.
- 14:37Speaker 4: This is a waiver process. He's not being DFA'd. So
- 14:41Speaker 4: nobody's going to pick him up for the league minimum.
- 14:43Speaker 4: $ 3 million, though? If you're the Mariners, are you going
- 14:48Speaker 4: to give him all the DHs? Is he going to
- 14:50Speaker 4: get all the DHs in Seattle? Is he going to
- 14:52Speaker 4: go play third base over, like you said, Weston Wilson,
- 14:56Speaker 4: over whatever configuration they would have? For $ 3 million for
- 15:01Speaker 4: a guy on the bench? I don't know. I don't know.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I think he might start at third base. I think
- 15:08Speaker 1: he would be their starting third baseman from the jump.
- 15:12Speaker 4: So you're willing to give him all the at-bats and
- 15:14Speaker 4: tell Weston Wilson or whatever? I'm not sure. See, I
- 15:17Speaker 4: don't know enough of who has been at third. Like
- 15:20Speaker 4: who's their left-handed option when they face a righty at third?
- 15:24Speaker 1: Well, I mean, things have changed. That's what we're talking about.
- 15:26Speaker 1: If everything's at full strength, it's J.P. Crawford. but cold
- 15:30Speaker 1: Emerson's out. And also he wasn't performing. And that was
- 15:33Speaker 1: partially because he was hurt and then needed surgery. So
- 15:35Speaker 1: this is where you start to run into depth issues
- 15:37Speaker 1: and you see if Gino can find something. I mean,
- 15:41Speaker 1: over the last five years, one of the best power
- 15:43Speaker 1: hitters in the sport, if you think he's still got
- 15:45Speaker 1: it and can get a hot month for you as
- 15:47Speaker 1: a very streaky hitter, just throwing it out there, it
- 15:50Speaker 1: could be worth the risk. Can we show some of
- 15:51Speaker 1: the other players who could be on waivers over the
- 15:54Speaker 1: next couple of days? And the way this works is
- 15:56Speaker 1: it's in reverse order of standings, but you can claim
- 15:58Speaker 1: the player and you get them for, No cost of prospects.
- 16:00Speaker 1: You just pick up the player and you pick up
- 16:02Speaker 1: the rest of his money. The Angels famously did this
- 16:05Speaker 1: a couple of years ago. What was it? Three years ago,
- 16:07Speaker 1: the dump deadline that we called it on FT. This
- 16:09Speaker 1: is baseball prospectus throwing some other names out there. Luis Robert,
- 16:13Speaker 1: Labor Torres, Kenley Jansen, Ryan Stanek, Caleb Ferguson, and Nolan
- 16:18Speaker 1: Gorman from the Cardinals, Pierce Johnson, and Brock Burke, two
- 16:21Speaker 1: other names that the Reds could put on there. So
- 16:23Speaker 1: these were just some other names that they threw out
- 16:26Speaker 1: into the world to see if These are not players
- 16:29Speaker 1: that were put on waivers that we know of yet.
- 16:31Speaker 1: But this all has to happen, AJ, in the next
- 16:33Speaker 1: few days. These are not nothing names. Some of these
- 16:36Speaker 1: guys could make an impact, and some of them are
- 16:37Speaker 1: making good money, and they're on teams that are not
- 16:40Speaker 1: in it. Tigers are out. Mets are out. Reds are out.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Put Luis Robert on waivers and see if anyone claims him,
- 16:47Speaker 2: and they can pick up the $ 20 million option next
- 16:49Speaker 2: year instead of the Mets.
- 16:52Speaker 4: The Mets are going to pick it up. Lock. My
- 16:54Speaker 4: lock for next year. My lock for next year. Luis Roberts'
- 16:58Speaker 4: option is picked up.
- 17:00Speaker 2: And he goes on the I.L. for at least a month.
- 17:03Speaker 4: I'm not saying it's a good choice. I'm just saying lock.
- 17:07Speaker 4: Picked up. Team option.
- 17:09Speaker 2: If there's a full season.
- 17:10Speaker 4: Ryan Stanek, even on top of that, Ryan Stanek can't
- 17:16Speaker 4: help a bullpen somewhere. I didn't look up what he
- 17:20Speaker 4: would be charging a team to play. You think Kenley
- 17:24Speaker 4: Jansen can't pick up a team, help him out in
- 17:27Speaker 4: the bullpen? Now, obviously, he's a little bit different because
- 17:30Speaker 4: he hasn't done much but closed. But Stanek, I mean,
- 17:34Speaker 4: Stanek can give you some innings, even if he's your fourth,
- 17:38Speaker 4: fifth option out of the pen. As you come down
- 17:40Speaker 4: the stretch here, a team, there's plenty of teams whose
- 17:43Speaker 4: bullpen stinks that could use a league average arm right
- 17:48Speaker 4: now from what he's done, and he has a ton
- 17:49Speaker 4: of experience. Yep.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Exactly. Who says there's no trades in late August? You
- 17:55Speaker 1: trade for nothing, right? A player to a team for
- 17:58Speaker 1: nothing but picking up money. We'll see if that happens
- 18:01Speaker 1: over the next couple of days. Also, by the way,
- 18:04Speaker 1: we have a Giants show, Splash Hit. We talked about
- 18:06Speaker 1: the Reds and some of the players that they might
- 18:08Speaker 1: shed over the next couple of days. That's Riverfront Territory
- 18:11Speaker 1: with Mason C. Trent and Danny Graves, all part of
- 18:15Speaker 1: the FT Network. I just wanted to mention AJ's favorite stat,
- 18:20Speaker 1: run differentials. The Tigers are currently at plus 70, AJ,
- 18:25Speaker 1: and the Astros, who might win the AL West, are
- 18:28Speaker 1: at minus 48. The Phillies are at plus 23. The
- 18:31Speaker 1: Pirates are at plus 24. So your favorite stat just
- 18:34Speaker 1: keeps winning. I'm being super sarcastic with all of that.
- 18:37Speaker 1: It's such a dumb stat. I hate seeing it on
- 18:39Speaker 1: standing sports.
- 18:41Speaker 2: It's supposed to be a kind of a guesstimate on
- 18:47Speaker 2: how your year's going. It's supposed to be. It's supposed
- 18:50Speaker 2: to be, but it doesn't always happen that way.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Unlucky.
- 18:52Speaker 4: You know what that means?
- 18:54Speaker 2: You know what it means? It means you're either really
- 18:56Speaker 2: good or really bad in blowouts.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Exactly. That's why it's such a dumb stat because they
- 19:01Speaker 1: do the Pythagorean record thing where they're like, well, the
- 19:03Speaker 1: Tigers should be that. Well, they're not. It's late August.
- 19:07Speaker 1: They're not.
- 19:08Speaker 2: And also it penalizes. They're better without Tobel and Mize.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Of course they are. And it penalizes, AJ, teams that
- 19:14Speaker 1: have good bullpen. Because often you have a good bullpen,
- 19:16Speaker 1: you're going to win the close games, right? Often you
- 19:18Speaker 1: look at the one-run record and you're like, oh, of course,
- 19:20Speaker 1: you're winning one-run games. Your run differential is not going
- 19:23Speaker 1: to be as good. Stupid, stupid stat. I have to
- 19:26Speaker 1: every few months just throw it out there.
- 19:29Speaker 4: My favorite is when teams have really good run differentials
- 19:32Speaker 4: like the Brewers and their expected wins. I just looked
- 19:36Speaker 4: it up for the Brewers. They're supposed to have 84
- 19:38Speaker 4: wins instead of 82 wins. But the Tigers are supposed
- 19:43Speaker 4: to have... 74 wins instead of 62. So they're the
- 19:47Speaker 4: most unlucky team ever. Keep the team the same. Don't
- 19:50Speaker 4: build it next year. One of the things that I
- 20:00Speaker 4: wasn't very good at was playing Major League Baseball. One
- 20:03Speaker 4: of the things that I'm really good at is sweating.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Even now, when I'm not playing, I need hydration. I
- 20:10Speaker 4: need to make sure it's convenient. That's why I choose Quince. Yep.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Quince electrolyte stick packs to the rescue. Crats. They taste great.
- 20:19Speaker 1: And the zero sugar options are stevia free. They're keto approved,
- 20:23Speaker 1: naturally sweetened with fermented rice. And like everything Quince does,
- 20:26Speaker 1: they're thoughtfully made and priced well at $ 20 for 30 servings.
- 20:30Speaker 1: They're less than half of the leading brand. Give your
- 20:32Speaker 1: body what it really needs to stay hydrated. Go to
- 20:35Speaker 1: quince.com slash foul for free shipping on your order. and
- 20:38Speaker 1: 365-day returns. That's Q-U-I-N-C-E dot com slash F-O-U-L for free
- 20:45Speaker 1: shipping and 365-day returns. Quince.com slash foul. These statements have
- 20:49Speaker 1: not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This
- 20:52Speaker 1: product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent
- 20:55Speaker 1: any disease. Dustin May, by the way, not funny you
- 20:59Speaker 1: can laugh about it now because he ends up being okay,
- 21:01Speaker 1: it sounds like, but I mean, leaves after a pitch.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Right scapula contusion. Now, a pitch off his shoulder, and
- 21:08Speaker 1: that was 106 exit velocity off the bat of A.J. Ewing-Kratz. So,
- 21:13Speaker 1: Robert Gasser to the rescue, but it worked out for Milwaukee.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Dustin May got hit by a Jacob Mizorowski fastball. Like,
- 21:20Speaker 4: that's what it feels like, 106. I mean, first pitch
- 21:24Speaker 4: of the game, too. He's lucky it didn't hit his arm.
- 21:27Speaker 4: It hit kind of the meat right in your lat there. So,
- 21:31Speaker 4: that was– I'm sure he has got a nice bruise today.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Yeah, perceived velocity for the Miz 107. If
- 21:39Speaker 1: you listened to Tom Verducci on FT yesterday, catch that
- 21:42Speaker 1: one if you didn't. And then also AJ, Chelsea James
- 21:45Speaker 1: was writing about Andy Green, who's doing a pretty good
- 21:48Speaker 1: job with the Mets, but it doesn't sound like he'll
- 21:49Speaker 1: be their manager next year. Sounds like he might want
- 21:51Speaker 1: to be their general manager under David Stearns.
- 21:55Speaker 4: Wow.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Good for him. Good for him if this happens.
- 21:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 2: They've said all along he wasn't going to be the
- 22:03Speaker 2: candidate for manager next year. Everyone seems to think it's
- 22:06Speaker 2: going to be Carlos Beltran. We've had people on here
- 22:08Speaker 2: say that he's a leading candidate for that job, but
- 22:11Speaker 2: Andy Green right to the front office. I like it.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Get players in positions of power.
- 22:15Speaker 1: So he can be like, Hey, Pete Alonzo is actually
- 22:17Speaker 1: really good.
- 22:19Speaker 2: He stinks.
- 22:25Speaker 1: AJ, can you see that little graphic we pulled from
- 22:29Speaker 1: the White Sox?
- 22:30Speaker 4: Yeah. What does it say?
- 22:33Speaker 2: Players of homers in five straight games for the White Sox.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Notice anything?
- 22:40Speaker 2: Tristan Peters and Mark Commie have done it this year.
- 22:43Speaker 4: Greg Luzinski.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Yep.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Ron Kittle.
- 22:46Speaker 4: Ron Kittle.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Frank Thomas. Paul Canerco did it 2011. I was there,
- 22:52Speaker 2: but I don't remember it.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Carlos Lee.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Carlos Lee.
- 22:56Speaker 1: AJ.
- 22:57Speaker 4: AJ had 27 homers that year and 2012 when AJ
- 23:04Speaker 4: did it. Guess how many Tristan Peters has.
- 23:10Speaker 3: 12.
- 23:12Speaker 1: 12.
- 23:13Speaker 4: And you have five straight games with a home run
- 23:17Speaker 4: is the craziness of stats for sure.
- 23:22Speaker 3: It is.
- 23:25Speaker 1: We might have Sam Antonacci on next week. So just
- 23:28Speaker 1: a little sneak peek of how he talks. He was
- 23:31Speaker 1: asked about DHing. He said, oh, so fun. Legs are fresh.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Don't have to run in and out of the field.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Don't have to interact with anybody. You get to swing
- 23:38Speaker 1: all the time, too. My swing felt good because I
- 23:40Speaker 1: took so many swings. Do it regularly? That will definitely
- 23:43Speaker 1: be the last time. Great quote. James Feagin posted it.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Last time until the next time they need him to DH.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Exactly. Oh, one more. Can we show the other tweet
- 23:55Speaker 1: before we get back from break? For AJ? You'll like
- 24:00Speaker 1: this one.
- 24:01Speaker 2: What else have I done? I got one of those.
- 24:04Speaker 1: I was the first. You were the first.
- 24:06Speaker 2: I was the first.
- 24:07Speaker 1: And the latest, that hat, the giveaway from the other night,
- 24:11Speaker 1: has made it to the Vatican.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Hey, I know that guy.
- 24:16Speaker 4: You do know him, and he knows you.
- 24:18Speaker 2: No, I know both those guys, actually. Father Tom McCarthy
- 24:21Speaker 2: and the Pope. So I know both those guys.
- 24:26Speaker 1: You're buddies, right?
- 24:28Speaker 2: Yeah, they're my pals.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Yeah, Stacey.
- 24:31Speaker 1: A.J. 's besties. They got the giveaway. Great story.
- 24:37Speaker 2: I was the first one, though. I was the first
- 24:40Speaker 2: one to have one, just saying.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Yes. Good series, Dodgers and Braves. And you're going to
- 24:49Speaker 1: hear A.J. call on the finisher of this one. The
- 24:52Speaker 1: last game of the series will feature a massive, massive
- 24:55Speaker 1: pitching matchup. Yamamoto and Chris Sale. Before we get to that, A.J.,
- 24:59Speaker 1: are you guys going to talk pretty early? in the
- 25:01Speaker 1: game broadcast or maybe even in the open about Hassan
- 25:05Speaker 1: Kim and his walk off his moment.
- 25:09Speaker 2: And his knock he got yesterday to win the game.
- 25:11Speaker 2: I have buddies that are Braves fans are like, that
- 25:13Speaker 2: was our $ 20 million hit yesterday right there. I was like, well, that's,
- 25:18Speaker 2: that's harsh, but maybe true. It doesn't have many.
- 25:22Speaker 4: No.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Uh, yeah, I'm sure it'll come up. It'll come up
- 25:25Speaker 2: in the open as you guys know, because, uh, we
- 25:28Speaker 2: kind of do a recap of the first two games.
- 25:30Speaker 2: And by the way, the Braves are four and one
- 25:32Speaker 2: against the Dodgers this year. They have this little, they're,
- 25:34Speaker 2: they're kind of dominating them. And tonight is just intriguing
- 25:37Speaker 2: pitching matchup as it gets. I mean, Kenny and I,
- 25:40Speaker 2: Kenny Albert and I get to talk about Yamamoto versus
- 25:44Speaker 2: Chris Sale. And you want to ace, you want two aces.
- 25:47Speaker 2: You want to watch a great pitching matchup. You want
- 25:49Speaker 2: to watch two first place teams, Fox one, FS one tonight.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Both is where you can watch this game. It's going
- 25:55Speaker 2: to be awesome. And you know, the best part, you
- 25:57Speaker 2: guys are, You guys will be like, oh, the hitters.
- 26:00Speaker 2: The weather. It rained this morning in Atlanta, so instead
- 26:04Speaker 2: of it being 138 degrees, it's going to be a
- 26:07Speaker 2: nice 78.
- 26:10Speaker 1: That's actually rare for this time of year. I have
- 26:12Speaker 1: a good stat for you. You have to mix this in.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Do you know the last day that Hasan Kim had
- 26:18Speaker 1: a hit? What date it was on the calendar? I
- 26:21Speaker 1: know there's a gap here, of course. He's only made one, two, three,
- 26:25Speaker 1: four Yep, four appearances so far in August. And then
- 26:32Speaker 1: he wasn't in there in July. So, I mean, I
- 26:36Speaker 1: guess I'm kind of helping you out here. I'll just
- 26:38Speaker 1: say it. June 3rd. June 3rd, he had a knock.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Went one for four against Toronto. And then before that,
- 26:49Speaker 1: didn't have a knock in mid-May. I mean, we're talking about...
- 26:54Speaker 1: He gets a hit a month? He gets a hit
- 26:57Speaker 1: a month. Six for 77. Six hits and 77 at-bats.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Hasan Kim. That doesn't seem good. No, his slash line
- 27:07Speaker 1: is 0-7-8. And I know it's a small sample. 174 OBP,
- 27:11Speaker 1: 0-7-8 slug for a 2-52 OPS. He is the definition
- 27:18Speaker 1: of kids watching the movie Space Jam and they just
- 27:21Speaker 1: sucked the superpowers out. They lost it. The Monstars stole
- 27:25Speaker 1: their superpowers. Like Kim went from a solid major league
- 27:29Speaker 1: player to cannot finding, cannot find a hit. And you
- 27:33Speaker 1: can see it here on the numbers. AJ, guess what?
- 27:36Speaker 1: He's still in the big league club. He's making $ 20
- 27:38Speaker 1: million this year. And if he suddenly finds it over
- 27:41Speaker 1: the next few weeks, they won't give a crap about
- 27:43Speaker 1: what happened over the last few months.
- 27:45Speaker 2: You know who's mad about that hit last night?
- 27:48Speaker 1: Who?
- 27:49Speaker 2: Eric Kraft. Because he might've just, Made him go from
- 27:53Speaker 2: fifth to fourth on that list we showed yesterday of
- 27:55Speaker 2: like the worst seasons. What was it, Kratzy?
- 27:58Speaker 3: No.
- 27:59Speaker 4: No, I still have a solid commanding lead. And I
- 28:04Speaker 4: still have my extra base hits. That's right.
- 28:08Speaker 2: I forgot about those extra base hits.
- 28:09Speaker 4: You know what? You know what people don't understand? Scott,
- 28:11Speaker 4: you kind of hit on it. Yeah, he's 0 for 27.
- 28:13Speaker 4: And people are like, oh, 27 at bats. Like a
- 28:16Speaker 4: lot of players can say they were 0 for 20 something.
- 28:20Speaker 4: It's the length of time. since his last hit. And
- 28:24Speaker 4: last night's hit, while they show a picture of him smiling,
- 28:29Speaker 4: I promise, inside he's not smiling. He knows he just
- 28:33Speaker 4: raised his average to 077 or whatever it was. Like,
- 28:38Speaker 4: I've been through it.
- 28:38Speaker 2: He's smiling.
- 28:40Speaker 4: Oh, he's smiling, but he's not. He still knows he's
- 28:42Speaker 4: having a terrible season, and he still knows that his, like,
- 28:47Speaker 4: You question yourself. That season for me, I went to
- 28:51Speaker 4: two different teams and I started both teams out. It
- 28:55Speaker 4: was a giant... Now I'm debating. No, it was the
- 28:59Speaker 4: Pirates and the Astros. I started both teams out 0
- 29:03Speaker 4: for 15. And I got a hit in my 16th
- 29:07Speaker 4: at bat for both teams. You can't make that up.
- 29:11Speaker 4: You can't put that out there as something that it's not...
- 29:14Speaker 4: It sucks. This is the worst... And so I hope
- 29:19Speaker 4: Kim goes four for four tonight. I'm not playing, but
- 29:23Speaker 4: I hope he goes four for four tonight because I
- 29:25Speaker 4: would never wish that on anybody. Bella, Bella, Bella, where?
- 29:35Speaker 4: I don't know where Bella is, but I know how
- 29:37Speaker 4: to take care of my pup.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Crats, while you find Bella, today's episode is sponsored by

- 30:28Speaker 1: not engaged in the business of insurance. I'll tell you
- 30:31Speaker 1: one thing, AJ. You can't bring his friends into the
- 30:34Speaker 1: food room.
- 30:39Speaker 2: I'm going to ask that tonight when I see him.
- 30:44Speaker 4: If he's going to be in there, yeah, I think
- 30:47Speaker 4: that's fair. I think that's fair. I don't think they're
- 30:49Speaker 4: looking for a soft landing. I don't think... He's getting
- 30:52Speaker 4: any preferential treatment. But you know what's crazy is the
- 30:55Speaker 4: fact that he... Well, he may not have been a
- 30:57Speaker 4: $ 20 million player because he was probably looking more at
- 31:00Speaker 4: like a 25 two-year deal. And he kind of bet
- 31:03Speaker 4: on himself for the one-year deal. And the Braves were like, yeah,
- 31:07Speaker 4: $ 20 million. It's not like this dude was like a
- 31:09Speaker 4: $ 6 million veteran pickup. This was a big pickup for
- 31:15Speaker 4: a bridge contract, bet on yourself type of contract. And
- 31:20Speaker 4: it just... hasn't happened this year.
- 31:23Speaker 1: No, it hasn't. I'm just a believer though, where it's like,
- 31:26Speaker 1: this guy was good not long ago. And I know
- 31:29Speaker 1: he's been through a few injuries. It's like, I don't know.
- 31:32Speaker 1: It's just the kind of guy in my mind, AJ,
- 31:34Speaker 1: where suddenly he can go from, you don't belong in
- 31:37Speaker 1: any pro ball to, Oh wait, he's, he's kind of back.
- 31:39Speaker 1: He can help the team. Like give credit. If you're
- 31:41Speaker 1: the Braves, you've been able to let him kind of
- 31:45Speaker 1: figure it out both from a health standpoint and then Um,
- 31:48Speaker 1: you know, the bigs, I'm not saying he's good suddenly now,
- 31:50Speaker 1: but you have at least put him in a position
- 31:52Speaker 1: where you're like, yeah, you're here. He talked yesterday about
- 31:54Speaker 1: how he's appreciated the support. Cause this is like in
- 31:57Speaker 1: almost any other scenario, a case where the team would
- 32:00Speaker 1: be like, see ya. Yeah, of course. So, uh, it's
- 32:05Speaker 1: a cool story. I hope you just suddenly crushed it.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Two out single frame in the bottom of the ninth, um,
- 32:09Speaker 1: first hit in months. And now the Braves are two
- 32:12Speaker 1: games back of the Dodgers for second best record in
- 32:15Speaker 1: the national league. Why is that important? Because the top
- 32:18Speaker 1: two teams receive a buy that used to not be cool.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Now it's super cool. So I'm sure the Braves would
- 32:23Speaker 1: love to line up their pitching in the post season.
- 32:26Speaker 1: And that's why this game matters. Well, I'm again being
- 32:29Speaker 1: sarcastic because there was one season where apparently it wasn't
- 32:32Speaker 1: cool because there was the rest versus rust conversation. We've
- 32:36Speaker 1: gotten rid of that because teams have taken advantage of
- 32:38Speaker 1: it since.
- 32:40Speaker 4: Yes. And because players have talked about it and, put
- 32:44Speaker 4: common sense out there rather than idiotic people who are like, nope,
- 32:50Speaker 4: want to stay playing. Said nobody ever after 162 games.
- 32:54Speaker 4: We want that break.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Hey, one injury note. Roki Sasaki, injured list, blister.
- 33:05Speaker 2: I'll tell you how he got the blister.
- 33:07Speaker 4: What?
- 33:07Speaker 2: Having to reach into that high-lye Cessna he uses as
- 33:09Speaker 2: a glove every time he caught a finger on. Have
- 33:14Speaker 2: you seen how big his glove is?
- 33:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 33:18Speaker 2: I think last night Frenchie and CJ were talking about
- 33:20Speaker 2: it on the Braves broadcast, and they were saying which
- 33:23Speaker 2: glove is bigger, the one in San Francisco in left
- 33:25Speaker 2: field or Rookie Suzuki's glove he uses.
- 33:28Speaker 4: I wonder if anybody's looked at the actual– what are
- 33:31Speaker 4: the rules? Is there a rule? There are rules. You
- 33:37Speaker 4: can't use a catcher's mitt at any other position. You
- 33:41Speaker 4: can't use a first baseman's mitt past a certain size
- 33:46Speaker 4: behind the dish. Like I know, and I didn't know
- 33:49Speaker 4: those rules until I had to catch a knuckleballer and
- 33:52Speaker 4: I used the first baseman's mitt and they were like, well,
- 33:54Speaker 4: you got to make sure it's not over whatever, 17 inches.
- 33:58Speaker 4: I wonder if there's a rule for the pitcher and
- 34:02Speaker 4: the size of glove you can have because they are,
- 34:05Speaker 4: they are testing the limit. That is for sure. It
- 34:07Speaker 4: looks almost AI. It looks comical.
- 34:11Speaker 1: You know the ones that they have in the outfield?
- 34:13Speaker 1: Some people bring those crazy big ones. Yeah.
- 34:16Speaker 4: They had it in the All-Star game. Mm-hmm.
- 34:20Speaker 1: That's rookie for you. Hey, I mean, it's helped him,
- 34:22Speaker 1: or at least even if it's a mental thing. I mean,
- 34:25Speaker 1: there were claims that, yeah, exactly, he was tipping and
- 34:28Speaker 1: people could see through the glove and all that. But
- 34:32Speaker 1: he could be a big factor if he comes back.
- 34:35Speaker 2: You need the Hubble telescope to see through that glove
- 34:37Speaker 2: he's got now.
- 34:38Speaker 1: I agree. He might be a big deal for them
- 34:41Speaker 1: in the postseason. I mean, he was. That was one
- 34:44Speaker 1: of the more unlikely stories last year, don't you think, AJ?
- 34:47Speaker 1: We're watching him, and you're like, oh, man, this guy's
- 34:49Speaker 1: not having a good first year.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Well, you know what he could do? He figured out
- 34:52Speaker 2: how to throw a split over the plate. That's what
- 34:54Speaker 2: was the difference in the bullpen.
- 34:58Speaker 1: That's what Verducci was talking to you guys. Right, and
- 35:01Speaker 1: that's what Verducci was talking to you guys about yesterday. Remember,
- 35:05Speaker 1: he's like, Diaz, in his mind, has to earn the rollback.
- 35:09Speaker 1: He can't land his slider for strikes, and they're just
- 35:11Speaker 1: torching his heater. No? You don't think he has to
- 35:14Speaker 1: earn it?
- 35:15Speaker 4: I don't agree that he has to earn it back,
- 35:17Speaker 4: and I definitely don't agree with the soft landing. I
- 35:20Speaker 4: think it was Cody Allen that talked about it on
- 35:24Speaker 4: KP's podcast. The adrenaline is what closers live on. If
- 35:31Speaker 4: you've got to throw him in the seventh or eighth inning,
- 35:34Speaker 4: is he really that guy? Is he really the guy
- 35:36Speaker 4: that you're going to get once you throw him in
- 35:38Speaker 4: the ninth? I don't know. I mean, he's got to
- 35:40Speaker 4: earn his way back. I shouldn't have said, no, I
- 35:42Speaker 4: don't think he's got to earn his way back. But
- 35:44Speaker 4: right now, it's not like Tanner Scott's like, my job.
- 35:48Speaker 4: So Rokey's like, I'll take a 15-day break, get my
- 35:52Speaker 4: blister healed up, you can just bring me back in
- 35:54Speaker 4: the bullpen, and we'll be good to go through the postseason.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I know every situation is different, but I mean, the
- 36:00Speaker 1: Dodgers do this. It's like, any issue, immediate IL, right, AJ?
- 36:05Speaker 1: And then, I don't know a ton about the situation,
- 36:08Speaker 1: but Bryce Miller's going through some things. It just feels
- 36:12Speaker 1: like if someone like that's on the Dodgers, they just
- 36:15Speaker 1: IL him. And this is– it's not really a knock
- 36:18Speaker 1: on the Mariners because they're actually really good at keeping
- 36:20Speaker 1: their pitchers on the mound. They've done it super well,
- 36:24Speaker 1: you know, going deep into the playoffs. And most of
- 36:27Speaker 1: their guys are on the mound this year.
- 36:29Speaker 2: But the Dodgers are really good. I'll tell you what
- 36:31Speaker 2: the Dodgers are really good at, depth. They have depth.
- 36:34Speaker 2: So if they're like, hey, we need 10 days. Okay,
- 36:36Speaker 2: we'll give you 10 days, Rookie, to– Get your finger fixed,
- 36:40Speaker 2: and then we'll see you then because we have seven
- 36:41Speaker 2: other starters on any other team that would be guaranteed
- 36:45Speaker 2: to be in the rotation. So we're fine. That's kind
- 36:47Speaker 2: of what the Dodgers have done. That's what they've learned.
- 36:49Speaker 4: That's why it was one of my two main locks
- 36:52Speaker 4: to start the year. The Dodgers under 103.5 wins. Like,
- 36:58Speaker 4: it's just, it's not that it's so hard. I think
- 37:00Speaker 4: the Dodgers could do it if they were like, hey,
- 37:02Speaker 4: we get an extra, we get a buy to the
- 37:04Speaker 4: NLCS if we win 105 games. I think they could
- 37:08Speaker 4: do it. I just don't think that they feel the
- 37:11Speaker 4: benefit of winning so many games because they are going
- 37:15Speaker 4: to win the division. They want to make sure they
- 37:17Speaker 4: get that buy, which the Braves are creeping right now,
- 37:20Speaker 4: but the Braves have to play well to get there.
- 37:23Speaker 4: I just think they know how to do this and
- 37:25Speaker 4: they have the depth but they're also not playing that
- 37:29Speaker 4: panic game of we've got to win every night.
- 37:36Speaker 1: And you can watch that game, the final game of
- 37:40Speaker 1: the Dodgers-Braves series, tonight on FS1 and on the Fox
- 37:45Speaker 1: 1 app. AJ will be part of it. AJ, who's
- 37:47Speaker 1: on with you, by the way?
- 37:49Speaker 2: Kenny Albert.
- 37:51Speaker 4: Nice.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Okay. Kenny Albert.
- 37:53Speaker 2: Tonight and Saturday in New York. Oh, cool.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Okay. So yeah, AJ and Kenny and then the other Kenny,
- 37:59Speaker 1: Kenny Rosenthal, also on Saturday's broadcast. That's right. And Wano.
- 38:05Speaker 1: And Wano. 2026 World Series, of course, is live on
- 38:07Speaker 1: that Fox One app at home or on the go,
- 38:10Speaker 1: live or on demand. Never miss a moment. Stream now.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Start your Fox One three-day free trial today at foxone.com.
- 38:22Speaker 1: So with a twist, a mistake was made, a missed
- 38:25Speaker 1: Bach call, and the future MVP of the National League,
- 38:29Speaker 1: Pekra Armstrong, was very heated about the missed call and
- 38:32Speaker 1: then also a bad strike call later on a couple
- 38:36Speaker 1: innings later. That's Alfonso Marquez. Marquez did apologize postgame, so
- 38:40Speaker 1: I want to give him credit for that. Ken Rosenthal
- 38:42Speaker 1: gave him dork of the week but also gave him
- 38:43Speaker 1: credit for doing that. Let's get PCA's words postgame on
- 38:47Speaker 1: what happened.
- 38:49Speaker 3: I saw four umpires miss a pretty obvious play. So
- 38:53Speaker 3: they're out there every day just like we are. Their
- 38:57Speaker 3: one job is to get calls right, and if they
- 39:00Speaker 3: get it wrong, they're supposed to talk about it, figure
- 39:01Speaker 3: it out, and get it right, and they didn't. I
- 39:05Speaker 3: get it from Alphonso's point of view at home plate.
- 39:09Speaker 3: Tough to see with two people standing in front of
- 39:11Speaker 3: you and all you're trying to do is call the
- 39:14Speaker 3: right pitch. But I don't know how you miss somebody
- 39:19Speaker 3: starting their motion and then stopping it and stepping off.
- 39:22Speaker 1: And I.
- 39:23Speaker 3: Just don't know. So you'll have to talk to them.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Perfect answer. I just don't know.
- 39:32Speaker 4: I don't know. I don't know.
- 39:33Speaker 2: I ask umpires that all the time. I just don't know.
- 39:34Speaker 2: I don't know how you missed that. I don't know.
- 39:37Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 39:37Speaker 2: I don't know how I swung and missed. I just
- 39:38Speaker 2: don't know. Perfect answer.
- 39:43Speaker 4: Four guys to miss it. Obviously, Alfonso Marquez apologized and
- 39:48Speaker 4: said they got it wrong, but I don't see... We
- 39:53Speaker 4: had the same thing happen in a high school game
- 39:56Speaker 4: with two umpires. They didn't see it. Okay? And their
- 40:00Speaker 4: high school umpire... Like, I don't see how it was...
- 40:03Speaker 4: I don't see how it was missed. Because... Like, I
- 40:09Speaker 4: would love to hear their explanation. Like, it's not a
- 40:13Speaker 4: called pitch. He stepped off. If they think he stepped off, well,
- 40:17Speaker 4: then he started his motion. And I... I just don't
- 40:20Speaker 4: understand how PCA didn't get thrown out either. I mean,
- 40:24Speaker 4: he was chirping them right there. And then he went
- 40:27Speaker 4: back and started chirping one of the other umpires. I
- 40:29Speaker 4: didn't see who it was. And he kind of waved
- 40:31Speaker 4: them off, too. He was pissed, rightly so. But it
- 40:35Speaker 4: was crazy. I can't believe he missed it.
- 40:37Speaker 1: But that's, again, where I'm going to give credit. Two
- 40:39Speaker 1: things happened. Yes, they messed up. Bad job. Two things
- 40:43Speaker 1: happened postgame. Apology slash acknowledgement that they messed up, AJ.
- 40:48Speaker 2: And.
- 40:49Speaker 1: They didn't boot PCA out of the game. People make mistakes,
- 40:53Speaker 1: and yes, is it kind of crazy that forums made
- 40:54Speaker 1: a mistake? Yes. Am I being too glass half full
- 40:58Speaker 1: to actually point out that we at least had some
- 41:00Speaker 1: accountability here and a feel for not throwing PCA out
- 41:05Speaker 1: after you missed something?
- 41:09Speaker 2: I like that they didn't throw him out. They understood
- 41:11Speaker 2: how mad he was, how important he was in that game,
- 41:13Speaker 2: and they didn't throw him out. That was fine. I
- 41:15Speaker 2: didn't have a problem with it. You know who gets
- 41:16Speaker 2: credit for this? Quentin Barry. He wasn't giving signs this time.
- 41:19Speaker 2: He was actually giving signs to PCA to stay back
- 41:22Speaker 2: and calm down. And Craig Council ran out there and
- 41:25Speaker 2: did a great job of getting him to calm down.
- 41:26Speaker 2: So I didn't– listen, missed calls happen. Missed calls happen
- 41:30Speaker 2: all the time, okay? So to say this, a lot
- 41:34Speaker 2: of four people missed it. Four people missed calls all
- 41:35Speaker 2: the time. So they missed it. I mean, did it
- 41:39Speaker 2: affect the game?
- 41:40Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 41:40Speaker 2: They lost 2-0. So even if that run score is 2-1,
- 41:43Speaker 2: they still lose. So I don't know. Sometimes we're a
- 41:46Speaker 2: little harsh on umpires. They miss calls. They're human. I
- 41:48Speaker 2: make mistakes sometimes.
- 41:50Speaker 1: We had like 60 people in Toronto forget how many
- 41:52Speaker 1: outs there were a week and a half ago. Two
- 41:55Speaker 1: teams and numbers, right? I mean, there's a lot of
- 41:59Speaker 1: missing there.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:04Speaker 1: On that series, by the way, Diamondbacks won the series. Big.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Cubs had great pitching. Gossman, Holmes, those look like some
- 42:13Speaker 1: good pickups. We're going to be talking about those guys
- 42:15Speaker 1: on the other side. Maybe all of the ups are
- 42:18Speaker 1: just lost in the eyes of Eduardo Rodriguez. This guy,
- 42:22Speaker 1: two and a half ERA, racking innings. He's at like 160-something.
- 42:26Speaker 1: He's not striking dudes out at a high clip. It's
- 42:29Speaker 1: well below average there. Not even a high ground ball.
- 42:31Speaker 1: It's just he's getting weak contact. And he's hitting his spots.
- 42:35Speaker 1: And he's doing it all year long for Arizona. I mean,
- 42:39Speaker 1: that's the surprise of the season for them.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Not if you watch the WBC on Fox and Fox One.
- 42:47Speaker 2: Because he dealt during the WBC for Venezuela. So maybe
- 42:52Speaker 2: the WBC can do good. Maybe it's not all terrible,
- 42:55Speaker 2: the WBC.
- 42:58Speaker 1: I mean, here's the other thing for the Cubs. They're
- 43:01Speaker 1: now six and a half back of the Brewers. I
- 43:03Speaker 1: know they got as close as, what was it, three
- 43:05Speaker 1: games maybe, AJ? Division's over.
- 43:09Speaker 4: Is it?
- 43:11Speaker 1: Six and a half with a month to play in
- 43:13Speaker 1: the NL Central and a good Brewers team.
- 43:15Speaker 2: Ask the Tigers.
- 43:18Speaker 4: Different.
- 43:19Speaker 1: About what? Last year?
- 43:21Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Feels different to me.
- 43:25Speaker 3: Okay.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Maybe I'm wrong. I mean, you can't predict baseball, but
- 43:29Speaker 1: it feels done. Okay.
- 43:32Speaker 2: Then it's over. Everyone, Scott said it's over. Scott said
- 43:34Speaker 2: it's over. It's over. Scott said it.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Make sure you let everyone know in Atlanta. It's over.
- 43:40Speaker 1: NL Central is over.
- 43:42Speaker 2: I also said that you– Chris Sale stinks. Scott said
- 43:44Speaker 2: Chris Sale stinks.
- 43:47Speaker 1: That's too far. I love Chris Sale, and he smells great.
- 43:50Speaker 1: He has great deodorant. Anyway, the Kevin Gossman-Clay Holmes edition
- 43:59Speaker 1: looking very nice right now for this team. I think
- 44:02Speaker 1: they surprised a lot of people, right? You're like, are
- 44:04Speaker 1: they going to do something big at the deadline? No.
- 44:06Speaker 1: And remember, Jed Hoyer himself said, I'm not going to
- 44:08Speaker 1: go crazy because we're not going to be a bye team. Well,
- 44:11Speaker 1: he went against that. And then he ended up not
- 44:13Speaker 1: getting one, but two playoff starters. And it really worked. Look,
- 44:17Speaker 1: those three had an 0-4-5 in this three-game set. Eight
- 44:20Speaker 1: hits in 20 innings. Yes, they dropped the series to
- 44:22Speaker 1: the Diamondbacks. But just a good sign to see some
- 44:24Speaker 1: starters like that. I know you guys, I don't even
- 44:26Speaker 1: know if you mentioned it yesterday, but Ben Brown had
- 44:28Speaker 1: a setback, which is bad. Ben Brown's got good stuff.
- 44:31Speaker 1: He's a beast. I mean, he's had it. He's just had,
- 44:34Speaker 1: what is it? Chronic. Is it his back? Whatever it is,
- 44:38Speaker 1: he's having problems, so he might not come back for them.
- 44:41Speaker 1: But there are arms here.
- 44:46Speaker 4: I think it's one of the things that they needed
- 44:48Speaker 4: to address, and they addressed it. So it makes the
- 44:51Speaker 4: Cubs a good hitting team. Obviously, they didn't hit this series.
- 44:54Speaker 4: Hitting goes in slumps. But to me, if I'm a
- 44:56Speaker 4: Cubs fan, I am super juiced about what we just
- 44:59Speaker 4: got out of three of our starting pitchers.
- 45:02Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 45:03Speaker 1: And right now, too, they're going to go as PCA
- 45:05Speaker 1: and Bregman go. And those two went two for 24
- 45:08Speaker 1: with an extra base hit. And PCA is the MVP
- 45:11Speaker 1: of the National League. Bregman's been on fire, and they
- 45:14Speaker 1: had a down series.
- 45:16Speaker 2: It happens.
- 45:18Speaker 1: It happens. Dansby will come back in a few weeks.
- 45:22Speaker 1: This team looks pretty good. I like the Cubs.
- 45:25Speaker 2: We talked about it yesterday, Scott. Or was it two
- 45:28Speaker 2: days ago with Little Kenyon? Cubs Brewers DS, baby. Let's go.
- 45:32Speaker 4: Let's go.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Sign me up for that one.
- 45:34Speaker 4: You just love to travel. You see, you can get
- 45:36Speaker 4: an Uber Black from Chicago to Milwaukee.
- 45:40Speaker 3: He's going to bite.
- 45:59Speaker 1: All right, let's slap. We have a riveting update to
- 46:01Speaker 1: the dump deadline. See Trent Rose Krantz, our buddy, FT fam,
- 46:07Speaker 1: riverfront territory, and the athletic covering the Cincinnati Reds. So
- 46:11Speaker 1: we talked earlier about how a Ohenio Suarez and TJ
- 46:14Speaker 1: Friedel are on waivers. They cleared waivers. So they will
- 46:20Speaker 1: be back with the team in Chicago on Friday. Nobody
- 46:24Speaker 1: wanted them. Hmm.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Well, All that talk we did for nothing.
- 46:32Speaker 4: Not for nothing. It was a good exercise. It's a
- 46:34Speaker 4: good exercise about what goes on in the front offices.
- 46:38Speaker 2: I just find it hard to believe that, you know,
- 46:40Speaker 2: I don't know, Fredo, but more Suarez with the vibes
- 46:44Speaker 2: he brings. $ 3 million. I'm sorry. It's a lot of
- 46:46Speaker 2: money in the everyday world. It's not a lot of
- 46:48Speaker 2: money in the baseball world. That's like nothing.
- 46:52Speaker 1: Gino can't hit a big homer in a big moment.
- 46:54Speaker 1: Everybody's roster is perfect. Nobody has any. Depth concerns. Nobody
- 46:59Speaker 1: needs a bat like that.
- 47:01Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure I saw him hit a huge homer
- 47:03Speaker 2: for the Mariners last year in the playoffs.
- 47:06Speaker 4: Oh, that was pretty decent.
- 47:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Has he had a bad year? Yes.
- 47:12Speaker 4: Is he a better option than what teams have?
- 47:14Speaker 1: Yes. Yes.
- 47:16Speaker 4: No, no, no.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Because that would require them having some kid that's a
- 47:22Speaker 2: rookie and they have to tell, you're not our guy,
- 47:24Speaker 2: and then we can't have that.
- 47:27Speaker 1: I mean, the Mariners kind of did that. Cole Young's
- 47:29Speaker 1: been very good. And Colt Emerson didn't work out. You
- 47:33Speaker 1: have multiple rookies that are starting in your middle infield.
- 47:37Speaker 1: Pretty good chance one of them is going to have
- 47:38Speaker 1: some growing pains. That's normal, especially nowadays when the gap
- 47:44Speaker 1: between the major leagues and the minor leagues is, I'm
- 47:46Speaker 1: being told, as big as ever. Can we show the
- 47:49Speaker 1: Phillies tweet from Mike Petriello? I thought this one was
- 47:51Speaker 1: good to just show what's going on with this Phillies
- 47:55Speaker 1: batting order. And Luis Arise joining the party. And this
- 47:58Speaker 1: isn't his bread and butter, but I'm actually curious to
- 48:02Speaker 1: get the lineup and protection, the protection in the lineup
- 48:05Speaker 1: perspective from you guys. So Petriello said Phillies bats through
- 48:08Speaker 1: the trade deadline. This was a day or two ago.
- 48:10Speaker 1: So grain of salt here. It might be 27th or whatever,
- 48:13Speaker 1: or it might be second in walk percentage. But anyway,
- 48:15Speaker 1: he said through the trade deadline, the Phillies were 28th
- 48:18Speaker 1: in walk percentage. One of the worst teams in baseball
- 48:21Speaker 1: had taken a walk, right? They don't do it often.
- 48:23Speaker 1: Phillies bats since the trade deadline. The only bat they
- 48:26Speaker 1: picked up was Louisa Rise. They're now first in walk
- 48:30Speaker 1: percentage over almost a month now with their primary acquisition
- 48:34Speaker 1: being a guy who does not like to walk, right?
- 48:38Speaker 1: So Petriello was saying this sport rules sometimes. And then
- 48:42Speaker 1: he said a lot of this is just about Bryce
- 48:44Speaker 1: Harper who has doubled his walk percentage, 13 in July,
- 48:46Speaker 1: 27 in August, mostly just seems to have stopped swinging.
- 48:50Speaker 1: He said protection isn't real, but it would be funny
- 48:52Speaker 1: if Louisa Rise behind him meant that Harper– wasn't being protected. So,
- 48:58Speaker 1: I mean, Luis arrives behind him. I will say AJ
- 49:02Speaker 1: protection doesn't have to be, Oh, here comes this feared slugger.
- 49:06Speaker 1: I mean, protection can be, Oh crap, just walk two
- 49:08Speaker 1: of the first three. And now the guy who makes
- 49:10Speaker 1: contact is stepping up. Isn't that the concept here?
- 49:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 49:14Speaker 2: It's just all about having somebody that can make you
- 49:15Speaker 2: pay when you walk the guy in front of you.
- 49:18Speaker 2: It doesn't have to be a slugger. It's just someone,
- 49:20Speaker 2: Louisa Rice can get hits in big situations. And you
- 49:23Speaker 2: walk Harper, Louisa Rice can get you a single and
- 49:27Speaker 2: maybe a double. He's run into some homers, but he
- 49:29Speaker 2: can do some damage to keep the inning alive and
- 49:32Speaker 2: to put more pressure on the pitcher. So it's not
- 49:34Speaker 2: always about hitting homers. It's about what kind of presence
- 49:37Speaker 2: they have and what can they do to keep the
- 49:39Speaker 2: innings going.
- 49:41Speaker 4: Yeah, protection is real. And the fact that he doesn't
- 49:46Speaker 4: have protection behind him in Luis Arias and what they're saying,
- 49:50Speaker 4: that's why he's walking. The teams are looking at it
- 49:52Speaker 4: and going, we're not going to let Bryce Harper, who's
- 49:56Speaker 4: been swinging a hot bat, and it's not just the walks,
- 49:59Speaker 4: we're not going to let him beat us. To me,
- 50:00Speaker 4: that's what it looks like to me. Because they're saying,
- 50:04Speaker 4: we can somehow deal with Luis Arias just getting a single.
- 50:09Speaker 4: But it's been working out. I mean, obviously, the team's
- 50:12Speaker 4: been hot. They've been scoring runs. And that's the name
- 50:14Speaker 4: of the game. Number one in walks, maybe now number two.
- 50:18Speaker 4: And they went to 30th in strikeouts during that time, too. Like,
- 50:22Speaker 4: they just completely flipped what they were doing.
- 50:27Speaker 1: And you know I push this all the time.
- 50:31Speaker 4: Protection's real, Scott. Ask those sailors. Ask those sailors back
- 50:34Speaker 4: in the day. Sailing from port to port. Uh, there is,
- 50:42Speaker 4: I don't know if Mike Petriello was being sarcastic. That
- 50:45Speaker 4: protection isn't real, but he clearly wasn't a seaman.
- 50:56Speaker 1: Uh, on the topic of protection, this is me always
- 50:59Speaker 1: trying to get us back in the post.
- 51:02Speaker 2: We are on YouTube, right?
- 51:04Speaker 1: Yeah. We're just on YouTube. So no rules. Uh, In
- 51:07Speaker 1: the postseason, yes, you can start to play music too.
- 51:10Speaker 1: In the postseason, pitching is better, right? A guy like
- 51:15Speaker 1: Luis Arias sometimes can be the perfect ingredient for a
- 51:19Speaker 1: team like the Phillies. Stephen Kwan has been that guy
- 51:21Speaker 1: in the past for the Guardians. And Jose Ramirez to
- 51:25Speaker 1: an extent too. But when they try and pitch around,
- 51:27Speaker 1: here's Kwan again. Blue pit, right? It's hard to strike
- 51:31Speaker 1: that guy out. It's going to be the same thing
- 51:32Speaker 1: with Arias. Is it going to change the complexion of
- 51:35Speaker 1: the postseason for the Phillies? I don't know, but I
- 51:38Speaker 1: sure think it helps based on what we've seen from
- 51:40Speaker 1: them the last few years in their offense in the postseason.
- 51:43Speaker 4: Totally. But it's totally what we said before the trade deadline.
- 51:47Speaker 4: The answers for the Phillies lineup were not Joe Adele,
- 51:51Speaker 4: Byron Buxton, even Ward, who I thought they were going
- 51:55Speaker 4: to go get Taylor Ward. It wasn't there. The answer
- 51:57Speaker 4: was already on their team. Nice shirt. FoulTerritoryShop.com if you
- 52:02Speaker 4: haven't seen scotty's shirt the yandy the yandy candy diaz
- 52:08Speaker 4: although i have to tell sarah i don't feel like
- 52:10Speaker 4: the biceps are quite large enough on the shirt maybe
- 52:13Speaker 4: we can get a larger shirt with longer.
- 52:15Speaker 1: Biceps i like that idea yandy bicep shirt i'd buy
