- 0:00Speaker 1: Upon Our Lord's Sermon on the Mount Discourse thirteen. Not
- 0:06Speaker 1: every one that saith unto me, Lord Lord, shall enter
- 0:10Speaker 1: it in the Kingdom of heaven. But he that doeth
- 0:13Speaker 1: the will of my Father, which is in heaven. Many
- 0:16Speaker 1: will say to me in that day, Lord Lord, have
- 0:20Speaker 1: we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name
- 0:24Speaker 1: have cast out devils? And in thy name done many
- 0:29Speaker 1: wonderful works? And then I will profess unto them I
- 0:33Speaker 1: never knew you, depart from me ye that work iniquity. Therefore,
- 0:38Speaker 1: whosoever heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them, I
- 0:42Speaker 1: will liken him unto a wise man which built his
- 0:46Speaker 1: house upon a rock, And the rain descended, and the
- 0:49Speaker 1: floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house,
- 0:53Speaker 1: and it fell not for it was founded upon a rock.
- 0:57Speaker 1: And every one that heareth these sayings of mine and
- 1:00Speaker 1: doeth them not shall be likened unto a foolish man
- 1:03Speaker 1: which built his house upon the sand. And the rain descended,
- 1:07Speaker 1: and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat
- 1:10Speaker 1: upon that house, and it fell, And great was the
- 1:13Speaker 1: fall of it. Matthew seven, Verses twenty one twenty seven.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Our divine Teacher, having declared the whole counsel of God
- 1:23Speaker 1: with regard to the way of Salvation, and observed the
- 1:26Speaker 1: chief hindrances of those who desire to walk therein, now
- 1:30Speaker 1: closes the whole with these weighty words, thereby, as it were,
- 1:34Speaker 1: setting his seal to his prophecy, and impressing his whole
- 1:38Speaker 1: authority on what he had delivered, that it might stand
- 1:41Speaker 1: firm to all generations. For thus set the Lord, that
- 1:45Speaker 1: none may ever conceive there is any other way than this.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord Lord, shall enter
- 1:54Speaker 1: into the Kingdom of Heaven. But he that doeth the
- 1:56Speaker 1: will of my Father, which is in heaven. Many will
- 1:59Speaker 1: say to me in that day, Lord Lord, have we
- 2:02Speaker 1: not prophesied in thy name, and in thy name have
- 2:05Speaker 1: cast out devils, and in thy name done many wonderful works?
- 2:10Speaker 1: And then, while I profess unto them, I never knew
- 2:12Speaker 1: you depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Therefore, everyone
- 2:16Speaker 1: that heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them not
- 2:20Speaker 1: shall be likened unto a foolish man which built his
- 2:22Speaker 1: house upon the sand. And the rain descended, and the
- 2:25Speaker 1: floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house,
- 2:28Speaker 1: and it fell, and great was the fall of it.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I design in the following discourse first to consider the
- 2:35Speaker 1: case of him who thus builds his house of Fama's hand.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Secondly to show the wisdom of him who builds upon
- 2:41Speaker 1: a rock, and thirdly to conclude with a practical application.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And first I am to consider the case of him
- 2:48Speaker 1: who builds his house a Fama's hand. It is concerning him,
- 2:51Speaker 1: our Lord, saith not everyone that saith unto me, Lord Lord,
- 2:56Speaker 1: shall enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. And this is
- 2:58Speaker 1: a decree which cannot pass, which standeth fast forever and ever.
- 3:04Speaker 1: It therefore imports us, in the highest degree thoroughly to
- 3:08Speaker 1: understand the force of these words. Now, what are we
- 3:11Speaker 1: to understand by that expression that saith unto me, Lord Lord?
- 3:16Speaker 1: It undoubtedly means that thinks of going to Heaven by
- 3:20Speaker 1: any other way than that which I have now described.
- 3:24Speaker 1: It therefore implies to begin at the lowest point, all
- 3:27Speaker 1: good words, all verbal religion. It includes whatever creeds we
- 3:32Speaker 1: may rehearse, whatever professions of faith we make, whatever number
- 3:37Speaker 1: of prayers we may repeat, whatever thanksgivings we read or
- 3:41Speaker 1: say to God. We may speak good of his name
- 3:44Speaker 1: and declare his loving kindness to the children of men.
- 3:47Speaker 1: We may be talking of all his mighty acts and
- 3:50Speaker 1: telling of his salvation from day to day. By comparing
- 3:54Speaker 1: spiritual things with spiritual we may show the meaning of
- 3:58Speaker 1: the oracles of God. We may explain the mysteries of
- 4:01Speaker 1: His kingdom which have been hid from the beginning of
- 4:03Speaker 1: the world. We may speak with the tongues of angels
- 4:07Speaker 1: rather than men, concerning the deep things of God. We
- 4:11Speaker 1: may proclaim to sinners, behold the lamb of God who
- 4:14Speaker 1: taketh away the sin of the world. Yeay, we may
- 4:18Speaker 1: do this with such a measure of the power of
- 4:20Speaker 1: God and such demonstration of his spirit as to save
- 4:24Speaker 1: many souls from death and hide a multitude of sins.
- 4:28Speaker 1: And yet it is very possible all this may be
- 4:31Speaker 1: no more than saying, Lord Lord, After I have thus
- 4:35Speaker 1: successfully preached to others, still I myself may be a castaway.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I may, in the hand of God snatch many souls
- 4:44Speaker 1: from hell, and yet drop into it when I have done.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I may bring many others to the Kingdom of Heaven,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and yet myself never enter there. Reader, if God hath
- 4:54Speaker 1: ever blessed my word to thy soul, pray that he
- 4:58Speaker 1: may be merciful to me a sinner. The saying Lord
- 5:02Speaker 1: Lord may secondly imply the doing no harm. We may
- 5:07Speaker 1: abstain from every presumptuous sin, from every kind of outward wickedness.
- 5:12Speaker 1: We may refrain from all those ways of acting or
- 5:15Speaker 1: speaking which are forbidden in Holy writ. We may be
- 5:18Speaker 1: able to say to all those among whom we live,
- 5:22Speaker 1: which of you convinceth me of sin? We may have
- 5:25Speaker 1: a conscious void of any external offense towards God and
- 5:30Speaker 1: towards man. We may be clear of all uncleanness, ungodliness,
- 5:34Speaker 1: and unrighteousness as to the outward act or, as the
- 5:39Speaker 1: apostle testifies concerning himself touching the righteousness of the law,
- 5:45Speaker 1: that is outward righteousness blameless. But yet we are not
- 5:50Speaker 1: hereby justified. Still, this is no more than saying, Lord Lord.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And if we go no farther than this, we shall
- 5:58Speaker 1: never enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. The saying Lord
- 6:03Speaker 1: Lord may imply. Thirdly, many of what are usually styled
- 6:07Speaker 1: good works. A man may attend the Supper of the Lord,
- 6:11Speaker 1: may hear abundance of excellent sermons and omit no opportunity
- 6:16Speaker 1: of partaking all the other ordinances of God. I may
- 6:20Speaker 1: do good to my neighbor, deal my bread to the hungry,
- 6:25Speaker 1: and cover the naked with a garment. I may be
- 6:28Speaker 1: so zealous of good works as even to give all
- 6:32Speaker 1: my goods to feed the poor. Yea. And I may
- 6:35Speaker 1: do all this with a desire to please God, and
- 6:39Speaker 1: a real belief that I do please Him thereby, which
- 6:43Speaker 1: is undeniably the case of those our Lord introduces saying
- 6:47Speaker 1: unto him, Lord Lord. And still I may have no
- 6:51Speaker 1: part in the glory which shall be revealed. If any
- 6:55Speaker 1: man marvels at this, let him acknowledge he is a
- 6:58Speaker 1: stranger to the whole religion of Jesus Christ, and in
- 7:02Speaker 1: particular to that perfect portraiture thereof which he has set
- 7:07Speaker 1: before us in this discourse. For how far short is
- 7:11Speaker 1: all this of that righteousness and true holiness which he
- 7:14Speaker 1: has described therein, How widely distant from that inward kingdom
- 7:18Speaker 1: of Heaven which is now opened in the believing soul,
- 7:22Speaker 1: which is first sown in the heart as a grain
- 7:25Speaker 1: of mustard seed, but afterwards putteth forth great branches on
- 7:29Speaker 1: which grow all the fruits of righteousness, every good temper,
- 7:33Speaker 1: and word and work. Yet as clearly as he had
- 7:37Speaker 1: declared this, as frequently as he had repeated that none
- 7:40Speaker 1: who have not this Kingdom of God within them shall
- 7:44Speaker 1: enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, our Lord well knew
- 7:47Speaker 1: that many would not receive this saying, and therefore confirms
- 7:51Speaker 1: it yet again many saith He not one, not a few.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Only it is not a rare or an uncommon case
- 8:00Speaker 1: shall say unto me in that day. Not only we
- 8:05Speaker 1: have said many prayers, we have spoken thy praise, We
- 8:09Speaker 1: have refrained from evil. We have exercised ourselves in doing good.
- 8:14Speaker 1: But what is abundantly more than this, we have prophesied
- 8:18Speaker 1: in thy name. In thy name have we cast out
- 8:21Speaker 1: devils in thy name, done many wonderful works. We have prophesied.
- 8:27Speaker 1: We have declared thy will to mankind. We have shown
- 8:30Speaker 1: sinners the way to peace and glory. And we have
- 8:33Speaker 1: done this in thy name, according to the truth of
- 8:37Speaker 1: thy gospel. Yea, and by thy authority, who didst confirm
- 8:41Speaker 1: the word with the holy ghosts sent down from heaven.
- 8:44Speaker 1: For in or by thy name, by the power of
- 8:48Speaker 1: thy word and of thy spirit, have we cast out
- 8:52Speaker 1: devils out of the souls which they have long claimed
- 8:56Speaker 1: as their own, and whereof they had full and quiet possession.
- 9:00Speaker 1: And in thy name, by thy power, not our own,
- 9:04Speaker 1: have we done many wonderful works, insomuch that even the
- 9:09Speaker 1: dead heard the voice of the Son of God speaking
- 9:12Speaker 1: by us, and lived. And then will I profess even
- 9:17Speaker 1: unto them, I never knew you, know not then when
- 9:22Speaker 1: you were casting out devils in my name. Even then
- 9:25Speaker 1: I did not know you as my own. For your
- 9:28Speaker 1: heart was not right toward God. Ye were not yourselves
- 9:31Speaker 1: meek and lowly. Ye were not lovers of God and
- 9:34Speaker 1: of all mankind. Ye were not renewed in the image
- 9:38Speaker 1: of God. Ye were not holy as I am holy.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Depart from me, ye who, notwithstanding all this, are workers
- 9:47Speaker 1: of iniquity and emiah, Ye are transgressors of My law,
- 9:54Speaker 1: my law of holy and perfect love. It is to
- 9:57Speaker 1: put this beyond all possibility of contradiction, that our Lord
- 10:01Speaker 1: confirms it by that opposite comparison. Everyone said, he who
- 10:07Speaker 1: heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them not, shall
- 10:10Speaker 1: be likened unto a foolish man which built his house
- 10:14Speaker 1: upon the sand. And the rain descended, and the floods came,
- 10:18Speaker 1: and the winds blew and beat upon that house, as
- 10:21Speaker 1: they will surely do sooner or later upon every soul
- 10:24Speaker 1: of man, even the floods of outward affliction or inward temptation,
- 10:29Speaker 1: the storms of pride, anger, fear, or desire. And it fell,
- 10:34Speaker 1: And great was the fall of it, so that it
- 10:37Speaker 1: perished forever and ever. Such must be the portion of
- 10:41Speaker 1: all who rest in anything short of that religion which
- 10:45Speaker 1: is above described, And the greater will therefore be. Because
- 10:49Speaker 1: they heard those sayings, and yet did them not. I
- 10:54Speaker 1: am secondly to show the wisdom of him that doeth
- 10:57Speaker 1: them that buildeth his house upon our rock. He indeed
- 11:01Speaker 1: is wise, who doeth the will of my Father, which
- 11:04Speaker 1: is in heaven. He is truly wise, whose righteousness exceeds
- 11:09Speaker 1: the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees. He is poor
- 11:14Speaker 1: in spirit, knowing himself even as also he is known.
- 11:18Speaker 1: He sees and feels all his sin and all his guilt,
- 11:22Speaker 1: till it is washed away by the atoning blood. He
- 11:26Speaker 1: is conscious of his lost estate, of the wrath of
- 11:29Speaker 1: God abiding on him, and of his utter inability to
- 11:33Speaker 1: help himself, till he is filled with peace and joy
- 11:38Speaker 1: in the Holy Ghost. He is meek and gentle, patient
- 11:42Speaker 1: toward all men, never returning evil for evil, or railing
- 11:47Speaker 1: for railing, but contrariwise blessing till he overcomes evil with good.
- 11:53Speaker 1: His soul is a thirst for nothing on earth, but
- 11:55Speaker 1: only for God, the Living God. He has bowels of
- 11:58Speaker 1: love for all man kind, and is ready to lay
- 12:02Speaker 1: down his life for his enemies. He loves the Lord
- 12:04Speaker 1: his God with all his heart, and with all his
- 12:08Speaker 1: mind and soul and strength. He alone shall enter into
- 12:13Speaker 1: the Kingdom of Heaven, who in this spirit doeth good
- 12:17Speaker 1: unto all men, and who, being for this cause despised
- 12:22Speaker 1: and rejected of men, being hated, reproached and persecuted, rejoices
- 12:29Speaker 1: and is exceeding glad, knowing in whom he hath believed,
- 12:34Speaker 1: and being assured these light, momentary afflictions will work out
- 12:38Speaker 1: for him in eternal weight of glory. How truly wise
- 12:42Speaker 1: is this man. He knows himself an everlasting spirit, which
- 12:46Speaker 1: came forth from God and was sent down into an
- 12:49Speaker 1: house of clay, not to do his own will, but
- 12:51Speaker 1: the will of Him that sent him. He knows the
- 12:54Speaker 1: world the place in which he is to pass a
- 12:57Speaker 1: few days or years, not as in an inhabitant, but
- 13:01Speaker 1: as a stranger and sojourner in his way to the
- 13:04Speaker 1: everlasting habitations. And accordingly he uses the world as not
- 13:08Speaker 1: amusing it, and as knowing the fashion of it passes away.
- 13:12Speaker 1: He knows God, his father and his friend, the parent
- 13:16Speaker 1: of all good, the center of the spirits of all flesh,
- 13:19Speaker 1: the sole happiness of all intelligent beings. He sees clearer
- 13:23Speaker 1: than the light of the noonday sun, that this is
- 13:26Speaker 1: the end of man, to glorify Him who made him
- 13:31Speaker 1: for himself, and do love and enjoy Him forever. And
- 13:34Speaker 1: with equal clearness, he sees the means to that end,
- 13:37Speaker 1: to the enjoyment of God and glory even now, to know,
- 13:41Speaker 1: to love, to imitate God, and to believe in Jesus Christ,
- 13:45Speaker 1: whom he hath said he is a wise man, even
- 13:48Speaker 1: in God's account, For he buildeth his house upon a rock,
- 13:53Speaker 1: upon the rock of Ages, the everlasting rock, the Lord
- 13:56Speaker 1: Jesus Christ. Fitly is he so cold, or he changeth not.
- 14:01Speaker 1: He is the same yesterday and today and forever to him.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Both the Man of God of old and the Apostle,
- 14:10Speaker 1: citing his words, bear witness thou Lord, in the beginning
- 14:15Speaker 1: hast laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens
- 14:18Speaker 1: are the works of Thine hands. They shall perish, but
- 14:21Speaker 1: thou remainest, and they all shall wax old as death
- 14:26Speaker 1: a garment, and as a vesture. Shalt thou fold them up,
- 14:30Speaker 1: and they shall be changed. But thou art the same,
- 14:34Speaker 1: and thy years shall not fail Hebrews One, Verses ten
- 14:40Speaker 1: through twelve. Wise, therefore is the man who buildeth on
- 14:44Speaker 1: him who layeth him for his only foundation, who builds
- 14:47Speaker 1: only upon his blood and righteousness, upon what he hath
- 14:51Speaker 1: done and suffered for us. On this cornerstone, he fixes
- 14:55Speaker 1: his faith and rests the whole weight of his soul
- 14:58Speaker 1: upon it. He is taught of God God to say, Lord,
- 15:01Speaker 1: I have sinned. I deserve the nethermost hell. But I
- 15:05Speaker 1: am justified freely by Thy grace through the redemption that
- 15:09Speaker 1: is in Jesus Christ. And the life I now live.
- 15:12Speaker 1: I live by faith in Him who loved me and
- 15:15Speaker 1: gave himself for me. The life I now live namely
- 15:19Speaker 1: a divine, heavenly life, a life which is hid with Christ.
- 15:23Speaker 1: In God. I now live, even in the flesh, a
- 15:27Speaker 1: life of love, of pure love, both to God, and
- 15:30Speaker 1: then a life of holiness and happiness, praising God and
- 15:34Speaker 1: doing all things to his glory. Yet let not such
- 15:39Speaker 1: an one think that he shall not see war anymore,
- 15:42Speaker 1: that he is now out of the reach of temptation.
- 15:46Speaker 1: It still remains for God to prove the grace he
- 15:48Speaker 1: hath given. He shall be tried as gold in the fire.
- 15:52Speaker 1: He shall be tempted not less than they who know
- 15:55Speaker 1: not God, perhaps abundantly more, for Satan will not fail
- 15:59Speaker 1: to try to the uttermost those whom he is not
- 16:02Speaker 1: able to destroy. Accordingly, the rain will impetuously descend only
- 16:09Speaker 1: at such times and in such a manner as seems good,
- 16:13Speaker 1: not to the prince of the power of the heir,
- 16:16Speaker 1: but to him whose kingdom ruleth over all. The floods
- 16:21Speaker 1: or torrents will come. They will lift up their waves
- 16:24Speaker 1: and rage horribly. But to them also, the Lord that
- 16:28Speaker 1: sitteth above the water floods, that remaineth a king forever,
- 16:31Speaker 1: will say, hitherto shall ye come, And no farther here
- 16:36Speaker 1: shall your proud waves be stayed. The winds will blow
- 16:41Speaker 1: and beat upon that house, as though they would tear
- 16:44Speaker 1: it up from the foundation, But they cannot prevail, it
- 16:48Speaker 1: falleth not, for it is founded upon a rock. He
- 16:53Speaker 1: buildeth on Christ by faith and love. Therefore he shall
- 16:56Speaker 1: not be cast down. He shall not fear them. Though
- 17:00Speaker 1: the earth bee moved, and though the hills be carried
- 17:02Speaker 1: into the midst of the sea, though the waters thereof
- 17:05Speaker 1: rage and swell, and the mountains shake at the tempest
- 17:09Speaker 1: of the same, Still he dwelleth under the defense of
- 17:13Speaker 1: the most High, and is safe under the shadow of
- 17:16Speaker 1: the Almighty. How nearly, then, does it concern every child
- 17:20Speaker 1: of man practically to apply these things to himself diligently
- 17:26Speaker 1: to examine on what foundation he builds, whether on a
- 17:29Speaker 1: rock or on the sand. How deeply are you concerned
- 17:33Speaker 1: to inquire, what is the foundation of my hope? Whereon
- 17:38Speaker 1: do I build my expectation of entering into the Kingdom
- 17:41Speaker 1: of Heaven? Is it not built on the sand? Upon
- 17:45Speaker 1: my orthodoxy or right opinions, which, by a gross abuse
- 17:49Speaker 1: of words, I have called faith, upon my having a
- 17:53Speaker 1: set of notions suppose more rational or scriptural than others
- 17:57Speaker 1: have alas, what madness is this? Surely this is building
- 18:01Speaker 1: on the sand, or rather on the froth of the sea.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Say I am convinced of this, am I not again
- 18:09Speaker 1: building my hope on what is equally unable to support it?
- 18:14Speaker 1: Perhaps on my belonging to so excellent a church reformed
- 18:19Speaker 1: after the true scripture model, blessed with the purest doctrine,
- 18:23Speaker 1: the most primitive liturgy, the most apostolical form of government.
- 18:27Speaker 1: These are doubtless so many reasons for praising God, as
- 18:31Speaker 1: they may be so many helps to holiness, But they
- 18:35Speaker 1: are not holiness itself. And if they are separate from it,
- 18:39Speaker 1: they will profit me nothing. Nay, they will leave me
- 18:42Speaker 1: the more without excuse and exposed to the greater damnation. Therefore,
- 18:48Speaker 1: if I build my hope upon this foundation, I am
- 18:51Speaker 1: still building upon the sand. You cannot, You dare not
- 18:55Speaker 1: rest here upon What next? Will you build your hope
- 18:59Speaker 1: of salvation, upon your innocence, upon your doing no harm.
- 19:03Speaker 1: You're not wronging or hurting anyone. Well, allow this plea
- 19:08Speaker 1: to be true. You are just in all your dealings.
- 19:12Speaker 1: You are a downright honest man. You pay every man
- 19:15Speaker 1: his own, You neither cheat nor extort. You act fairly
- 19:20Speaker 1: with all mankind, and you have a conscience towards God.
- 19:24Speaker 1: You do not live in any known sin thus far
- 19:28Speaker 1: is well, But still it is not the thing. You
- 19:31Speaker 1: may go thus far and yet never come to heaven.
- 19:35Speaker 1: When all this harmlessness flows from a right principle, it
- 19:39Speaker 1: is the least part of the religion of Christ. But
- 19:42Speaker 1: in you it does not flow from a right principle,
- 19:45Speaker 1: and therefore is no part at all of religion. So
- 19:48Speaker 1: that in grounding your hope of salvation on this you
- 19:51Speaker 1: are still building upon the sand. Do you go farther?
- 19:55Speaker 1: Yet do you add to the doing no harm, the
- 19:59Speaker 1: attending all the ordinances of God? Do you, at all
- 20:02Speaker 1: opportunities partake of the Lord's supper, use public and private prayer,
- 20:08Speaker 1: fast often, hear, in search the scriptures, and meditate thereon
- 20:14Speaker 1: These things likewise ought you to have done from the
- 20:18Speaker 1: time you first set your face towards heaven. Yet these
- 20:21Speaker 1: things also are nothing, being alone, they are nothing without
- 20:26Speaker 1: the weightier matters of the law, and those you have forgotten.
- 20:32Speaker 1: At least you experience them, not faith, mercy and love
- 20:37Speaker 1: of God, holiness of heart, heaven opened in the soul. Still,
- 20:41Speaker 1: therefore you build upon the sand Over and above all this?
- 20:46Speaker 1: Are you zealous of good works? Do you, as you
- 20:49Speaker 1: have time, do good to all men. Do you feed
- 20:52Speaker 1: the hungry, and clothe the naked, and visit the fatherless
- 20:56Speaker 1: and widow in their affliction? Do you visit those that
- 20:59Speaker 1: are sick, relieve them that are in prison? Is any
- 21:03Speaker 1: a stranger and you take him in? Friend? Come up higher?
- 21:09Speaker 1: Do you prophesy in the name of Christ? Do you
- 21:12Speaker 1: preach the truth as it is in Jesus? And does
- 21:15Speaker 1: the influence of His spirit attend your word and maketh
- 21:19Speaker 1: the power of God unto salvation? Does he enable you
- 21:22Speaker 1: to bring sinners from darkness to light, from the power
- 21:26Speaker 1: of Satan unto God? Then go and learn what thou
- 21:30Speaker 1: hast so often taught by grace. Ye are saved through faith,
- 21:35Speaker 1: not by works of righteousness, which we have done, but
- 21:38Speaker 1: of his own mercy. He saveth us. Learn to hang
- 21:43Speaker 1: naked upon the cross of Christ, counting all thou hast
- 21:46Speaker 1: done but dung and draws. Apply to him just in
- 21:51Speaker 1: the spirit of the dying thief of the Harlot with
- 21:54Speaker 1: her seven devils. Else thou art still on the sand,
- 21:57Speaker 1: and after saving others, thou wilt lose thy own soul. Lord,
- 22:03Speaker 1: increase my faith if I now believe. Else give me faith, though,
- 22:07Speaker 1: but as a grain of mustard seed. But what does
- 22:11Speaker 1: it profit If a man say he have faith and
- 22:14Speaker 1: have not works, Can that faith save him? Oh? No,
- 22:19Speaker 1: that faith which hath not works, which does not produce
- 22:23Speaker 1: both inward and outward holiness, which does not stamp the
- 22:27Speaker 1: whole image of God on the heart and purify us
- 22:30Speaker 1: as He is pure. That faith which does not produce
- 22:34Speaker 1: the whole of the religion described in the foregoing chapters,
- 22:38Speaker 1: is not the faith of the Gospel, not the Christian faith,
- 22:41Speaker 1: not the faith which leads to glory. Oh, beware of
- 22:45Speaker 1: this above all other snares of the devil, of resting
- 22:49Speaker 1: on unholy, unsaving faith. If thou layest stress on this,
- 22:55Speaker 1: thou art lass forever thou still buildest thy upon the sand.
- 23:02Speaker 1: When the rain descends and the floods come, it will
- 23:05Speaker 1: surely fall, and great will be the fall of it. Now, therefore,
- 23:10Speaker 1: build thou upon a rock, by the grace of God.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Know thyself, Know and feel that thou wast shapen in
- 23:16Speaker 1: wickedness and in sin, that thy mother conceive thee, and
- 23:20Speaker 1: that thou thyself hast been heaping sin upon sin ever
- 23:24Speaker 1: since thou couldst discerned good from evil. Own thyself guilty
- 23:29Speaker 1: of eternal death, and renounce all hope of ever being
- 23:34Speaker 1: able to save thyself. Be it all thy hope to
- 23:37Speaker 1: be washed in His blood and purified by His Spirit,
- 23:41Speaker 1: who himself bore all thy sins in his own body
- 23:46Speaker 1: upon the tree. And if thou knowest he hath taken
- 23:49Speaker 1: away thy sins, so much the more abase thyself before him,
- 23:55Speaker 1: in a continual sense of thy total dependence on Him
- 23:58Speaker 1: for every good thought and word and work, and of
- 24:03Speaker 1: thy utter inability to all good unless He water thee
- 24:08Speaker 1: every moment. Now weep for your sins and mourn after
- 24:12Speaker 1: God till He turns your heaviness into joy. And even
- 24:15Speaker 1: then weep with them that weep, and for them that weep,
- 24:18Speaker 1: not for themselves, mourn for the sins and miseries of mankind.
- 24:23Speaker 1: And see but just before your eyes the immense ocean
- 24:28Speaker 1: of eternity without a bottom or a shore, which has
- 24:31Speaker 1: already swallowed up millions and millions of men, and is
- 24:35Speaker 1: gaping to devour them that yet remain. See here the
- 24:39Speaker 1: House of God eternal in the heavens. There hell and
- 24:44Speaker 1: destruction without a covering. And thence learned the importance of
- 24:48Speaker 1: every moment, which just appears and has gone forever. Now
- 24:52Speaker 1: add to your seriousness, meekness of wisdom. Hold an even
- 24:57Speaker 1: scale as to all your passions, but in parta as
- 25:00Speaker 1: to anger, sorrow, and fear, calmly acquiesce in whatsoever is
- 25:05Speaker 1: the will of God. Learn in every state wherein you
- 25:09Speaker 1: are therewith to be content, Be mild to the good,
- 25:13Speaker 1: Be gentle toward all men, but especially toward the evil
- 25:17Speaker 1: and the unthankful. Beware not only of outward expressions of anger,
- 25:22Speaker 1: such as calling thy brother raca or thou fool, but
- 25:26Speaker 1: of every inward emotion contrary to love, though it go
- 25:30Speaker 1: no farther than the heart. Be angry at sin as
- 25:34Speaker 1: an affront offered to the majesty of Heaven. But love
- 25:37Speaker 1: the sinner still. Like our Lord, who looked round about
- 25:41Speaker 1: upon the Pharisees with anger, being grieved for the hardness
- 25:45Speaker 1: of their hearts, he was grieved at the sinners angry
- 25:49Speaker 1: at sin. Thus be angry and sin. Not Now do
- 25:54Speaker 1: thou hunger and thirst not for the meat that perisheth,
- 25:58Speaker 1: but for that which is endureth into everlasting life. Trample
- 26:03Speaker 1: underfoot the world and the things of the world. All
- 26:06Speaker 1: these riches, honors, pleasures. What is the world to thee?
- 26:11Speaker 1: Let the dead, bury the dead, but follow thou after
- 26:14Speaker 1: the image of God, and beware of quenching that blessed thirst,
- 26:19Speaker 1: if it is already excited in thy soul by what
- 26:22Speaker 1: is vulgarly called religion, a poor, dull force, a religion
- 26:27Speaker 1: of form of outside show, which leaves the heart still
- 26:31Speaker 1: cleaving to the dust, as earthly and sensual as ever,
- 26:34Speaker 1: Let nothing satisfy THEE but the power of Godliness. But
- 26:38Speaker 1: a religion that is spirit and life, the dwelling in
- 26:41Speaker 1: God and God in thee, the being an inhabitant of eternity,
- 26:46Speaker 1: the entering in by the blood of sprinkling within the veil,
- 26:50Speaker 1: and sitting in heavenly places with Christ Jesus now seeing
- 26:55Speaker 1: thou canst do all things through Christ, strengthening THEE. Mercy
- 27:00Speaker 1: as thy Father in Heaven, is merciful, love thy neighbor
- 27:03Speaker 1: as thyself, love friends and enemies as thy own soul.
- 27:08Speaker 1: And let thy love be long, suffering and patient towards
- 27:12Speaker 1: all men. Let it be kind, soft, benign, inspiring THEE
- 27:17Speaker 1: with the most amiable sweetness and the most fervent and
- 27:20Speaker 1: tender affection. Let it rejoice in the truth wheresoever it
- 27:24Speaker 1: is found, the truth that is after Godliness. Enjoy whatsoever
- 27:30Speaker 1: brings glory to God and promotes peace and good will
- 27:34Speaker 1: among men. In love, Cover all things of the dead
- 27:38Speaker 1: and the absence, speaking nothing but good. Believe all things
- 27:42Speaker 1: which may any way tend to clear your neighbor's character.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Hope all things in His favor, and endure all things,
- 27:50Speaker 1: triumphing over all opposition for true love. Never faileth in
- 27:54Speaker 1: time or in eternity. Now be thou pure in heart,
- 27:58Speaker 1: purified through faith, faith from every unholy affection, cleansing thyself
- 28:03Speaker 1: from all filthiness of flesh and spirit, and perfecting holiness
- 28:07Speaker 1: in the fear of God, being through the power of
- 28:10Speaker 1: His grace. Purified from pride by deep poverty of spirit,
- 28:14Speaker 1: from anger, from every unkind or turbulent passion, by meekness
- 28:19Speaker 1: and mercifulness, from every desire. But to please and enjoy
- 28:24Speaker 1: God by hunger and thirst after righteousness. Now love the Lord,
- 28:28Speaker 1: thy God with all thy heart and with all thy strength.
- 28:32Speaker 1: In a word, let thy religion be the religion of
- 28:36Speaker 1: the heart. Let it lie deep in Thy inmost soul.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Be thou little and base, and mean and vile, beyond
- 28:43Speaker 1: what words can express in thy own eyes, amazed and
- 28:48Speaker 1: humbled to the dust by the love of God which
- 28:51Speaker 1: is in Christ Jesus be serious. Let the whole stream
- 28:54Speaker 1: of thy thoughts, words, and actions flow from the deepest
- 28:58Speaker 1: conviction that thou standest on the edge of the great gulf,
- 29:03Speaker 1: Thou and all the children of men, just ready to
- 29:07Speaker 1: drop in, either into everlasting glory or everlasting burnings. Let
- 29:12Speaker 1: thy soul be filled with mildness, gentleness, patience, long suffering
- 29:18Speaker 1: towards all men, at the same time that all which
- 29:22Speaker 1: is in thee is a thirst for God, the Living God,
- 29:26Speaker 1: longing to awake up after His likeness and to be
- 29:30Speaker 1: satisfied with it. Be thou a lover of God and
- 29:33Speaker 1: of all mankind. In this spirit, do and suffer all things.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Thus show thy faith by thy works, Thus do the
- 29:41Speaker 1: will of thy Father, which is in Heaven. And as
- 29:46Speaker 1: sure as thou now wokest with God on earth, thou
- 29:49Speaker 1: shalt also reign with Him in glory. End of section
- 29:55Speaker 1: thirty three.
