- 0:00There are certain realms of the paranormal and unexplained that
- 0:04seem to capture our imagination more than others, weaving
- 0:08themselves into legend and folklore, yet occasionally
- 0:13emerging as potential realities. One such entity that appears to
- 0:19dwell solely in the realm of fiction and fantasy is the
- 0:24vampire. However, despite the seemingly
- 0:27mythical nature of these immortal blood drinking beings,
- 0:32there are instances that Surface has purported encounters with
- 0:37these creatures, and one such account allegedly occurred in
- 0:42the tranquil English countryside.
- 0:45It is a tale that has become a curious part of local lore and a
- 0:49historic anomaly still discussed to this day.
- 0:53This is the untold story of the Crawglin Grange vampire
- 1:09in the idyllic countryside of Cumberland, northwest England.
- 1:14This tale began unfolding in 1875.
- 1:18It was that spring when two brothers, Edward and Michael
- 1:21Cranswell, along with their sister Amelia, ventured to this
- 1:26region and temporarily took up residence in a modest single
- 1:31home stone farmhouse known as the Kroglin Grange.
- 1:36Overlooking the picturesque valley and nestled near an
- 1:39ancient churchyard, the property owned by the Fisher family
- 1:45seemed to draw the siblings in. Initially intending a brief
- 1:48stay, the Cranswells found themselves captivated by the
- 1:52serene rural life, swiftly becoming familiar faces among
- 1:57the locals. Their initial plans for a
- 2:00fleeting visit gradually dissipated as an inexplicable
- 2:04force seemed to compel them to linger.
- 2:08The townspeople, unaware of the undercurrents brewing beneath
- 2:12the surface, welcomed the siblings with open arms,
- 2:16oblivious to the veil that hid their true intentions.
- 2:21That sweltering summer, an ominous presence, seemed to
- 2:24linger, casting a shadow over the quaint farmhouse.
- 2:29As the relentless heat wave persisted, Amelia found herself
- 2:33tossing and turning, growing more and more uncomfortable with
- 2:38the shutters flung open in a desperate attempt to coax in a
- 2:42cooling breeze. She lay awake, her gaze fixated
- 2:46on the inky blackness that shrouded the trees beyond.
- 2:51It was then that something caught her eye, a faint
- 2:54flickering that danced among the branches, gradually intensifying
- 3:00as it drew nearer. 2 pen pricks of light weaved their way
- 3:04through the darkness, their approach sending a chill down
- 3:08Amelia's spine. Despite the stifling heat, a
- 3:13sense of foreboding gripped her, an inexplicable dread that she
- 3:18could not explain. As the eerie lights drew closer,
- 3:24Amelia felt the dread growing and enveloping her, a thick and
- 3:29palpable fear that gripped her very being.
- 3:33The source of the flickering illumination emerged from the
- 3:36shadows behind the window pane, revealing a grotesque facade, a
- 3:43hideous brown face with blazing eyes that leered menacingly at
- 3:49her. Its clawed hands began to
- 3:53scratch at the glass, desperate to gain entry, though
- 3:57fortunately, the window remained locked.
- 4:02Amelia found herself paralyzed, her voice trapped in her throat,
- 4:07unable to utter a sound as she trembled in silent terror,
- 4:12transfixed by the monstrous entity outside.
- 4:17As the creature's attempts to open the window escalated from
- 4:22mere scratches to peeling away the lead that sealed the pane's
- 4:27edges, Amelia's mind raised with unspeakable horrors, unable to
- 4:33comprehend just who or what sought to breach her sanctuary.
- 4:40When the window pane shattered onto the floor, a Bony claw like
- 4:45hand beached through, deftly unlocking the latch from within,
- 4:53Amelia's voice remained trapped, still paralyzed as a towering,
- 4:59shadowy figure glided across the room.
- 5:03It seized her in its embrace, grasping her hair and forcibly
- 5:09yanking her head back, exposing her vulnerable throat.
- 5:15Despite her desperate attempts to move or cry out, she thus
- 5:19remained petrified, helpless against this monster.
- 5:24As the creature bent down, its teeth poised to Pierce her
- 5:28flesh, the searing pain finally unleashed a piercing scream that
- 5:34echoed throughout the night. Jolted awake by their sister's
- 5:39terrified cries, Edward and Michael Cranswell sprang into
- 5:43action, rushing towards Amelia's room.
- 5:47With a forceful thrust, they broke down the door only to
- 5:52witness a chilling sight, that shadowy figure swiftly escaping
- 5:58through the shattered window. Without hesitation, one of the
- 6:03brothers grabbed a fire poker and gave chase, determined to
- 6:08confront the intruder. However, the entity moved with
- 6:13an unnatural swiftness, its strides unnervingly long and
- 6:19inhuman as it leapt over the ancient church wall,
- 6:24disappearing into the Knights embrace.
- 6:28The brothers were left bewildered and unsettled.
- 6:33Amelia, shaken and bleeding from her neck, recounted the
- 6:38harrowing ordeal. Initially, she attributed the
- 6:42attack to a deranged individual, perhaps an escaped asylum
- 6:47patient, her mind unable to comprehend the true nature of
- 6:52the assailant. The notion of a vampire, a
- 6:56creature of myth and legend, seemed too fantastical to
- 7:01consider. Deeply concerned for their
- 7:04sister's well-being, the Cranswell brothers decided to
- 7:07whisk Amelia away from the once peaceful, now terrifying
- 7:12confines of the Krawgling Grange.
- 7:15A long vacation in Switzerland, they hoped, would provide her
- 7:20with the respite and recovery she desperately needed, allowing
- 7:25her to regain her strength and put the traumatic experience
- 7:30behind her. As they departed, an air of
- 7:34uncertainty lingered, the sense that the tranquil countryside
- 7:38harbored a sinister presence, a force that defied rational
- 7:43explanation. The events of that night had
- 7:47left more questions than answers in their wake.
- 7:52When they returned to Krogland Grange the following autumn, the
- 7:56memory of that traumatic night did not leave the family.
- 8:00With time, the siblings were determined to confront any
- 8:04sinister force that remained. The brothers meticulously
- 8:09arranged their sleeping quarters directly across from Amelia's
- 8:13room, ensuring a watchful eye over her safety.
- 8:18Pistols were strategically placed within reach, just in
- 8:22case the creature did rear its head again.
- 8:26Amelia, still bearing the scars of the original attack,
- 8:30diligently secured her shutters each evening, fortifying her
- 8:34chambers. For a time, an eerie calm seemed
- 8:39to settle the countryside abode, lulling them into a false sense
- 8:44of security. The winter months passed without
- 8:48incident, however, as the first blossoms of spring unfurled the
- 8:54familiar cold wind Harold the soon return of the creature.
- 9:02One evening, Amelia's slumber was once again disrupted by the
- 9:06hauntingly familiar sound, a scratching and tapping against
- 9:13her window, now fortified with shutters to shield her from the
- 9:18horrific visage that lurked beyond.
- 9:21Bracing herself for the worst yet clinging to the hope that it
- 9:26was merely an animal's doing, she mustered the courage to peer
- 9:30through the narrow gap at the top of the pane, left uncovered
- 9:34by the shudders protective barrier.
- 9:38There, hunched menacingly at her window, was the same wretched
- 9:43creature she had encountered before it, shriveled, grotesque
- 9:48appearance and burning ember like eyes glaring.
- 9:53This time Amelia's voice did not fail her, and she screamed as
- 9:58loud as she could, a desperate cry that jolted her brothers
- 10:03into immediate action. They burst forth from the house,
- 10:08pistols loaded and ready in a frantic pursuit.
- 10:13They allegedly managed to strike the creature in the leg as it
- 10:16fled, but its unnatural speed and agility allowed it to evade
- 10:21their grasp. Undeterred, it fled towards the
- 10:26nearby graveyard, disappearing into the depths of the ancient
- 10:31crypt. Again, the brothers knew that
- 10:35they couldn't face the creature alone.
- 10:37The previous night's encounter had shaken them to their core,
- 10:41and the realization that others in the area had experienced
- 10:45similar harrowing visitations only added to the sense of
- 10:50unease that gripped them. Whispers of drained livestock
- 10:55and a young girl bearing inexplicable bite wounds spread
- 10:59like wildfire, fueling speculation that they were
- 11:03confronting a force beyond comprehension.
- 11:08The Cranswell brothers rallied the locals, imploring any able
- 11:13bodied individuals to join their crusade.
- 11:17As the sun swept over the horizon, a small band of locals
- 11:21gathered, armed with an array of makeshift weapons, ready to
- 11:27confront the sinister creature that had plagued their once
- 11:31peaceful hamlet, their footsteps echoing through the ancient
- 11:36graveyard. As they approached the ominous
- 11:39crypt where the creature had sought refuge, the air hung
- 11:45heavy with a palpable sense of dread, as if the very stones
- 11:51themselves harbored secrets best left undisturbed.
- 11:56Yet, driven by a burning curiosity and a desire to
- 12:01restore tranquility to their community, they pressed on.
- 12:06As they neared the Crips entrance, a hush fell over the
- 12:10group. The brothers exchanged a
- 12:13resolute glance, their grip tightening around their weapons
- 12:18as they prepared to venture into the abyss.
- 12:22As they crossed a threshold into the gloomy crypt, a chill ran
- 12:26down their spines. Their torchlight cast eerie
- 12:30shadows across the defiled graves, coffins torn asunder,
- 12:36their contents strewn haphazardly across the stone
- 12:39floor. A sense of unease gripped them,
- 12:44yet amidst the desecrated resting places, one coffin
- 12:48remained untouched. With bated breath, they pried
- 12:52open the lid, and what greeted them was a sight that would
- 12:57forever be etched into their memories.
- 13:00There, lying motionless within the confines of the coffin, was
- 13:06the very creature that had terrorized them.
- 13:09Its features now doled as if trapped in a trance like state.
- 13:15A fresh bullet wound marred its leg, a testament to the brothers
- 13:20earlier pursued, but it seemed to have little effect on the
- 13:25entity's unnatural existence. Realization dawned upon them, a
- 13:31chilling certainty that they were indeed confronting a
- 13:34vampire, a creature of myth and legend now made flesh before
- 13:40their very eyes. The whisper entails that had
- 13:44once seemed like mere folklore now took on a terrifying
- 13:48reality. The brothers knew that they
- 13:51could not allow this abomination to continue its reign of terror.
- 13:55Swiftly, they set about gathering the necessary
- 13:59materials, determined to purge the entity from their midst once
- 14:04and for all. The crackling flames cast a glow
- 14:08upon their faces as they prepared to consign the creature
- 14:13to the cleansing fire, a ritual that would hopefully bring an
- 14:17end to the harrowing ordeal. As the flames licked at the
- 14:22creature's form, the brothers and their companions watched
- 14:26with a mixture of trepidation and relief, knowing that they
- 14:31had vanquished a force that had threatened to unravel the very
- 14:35fabric their existence. The smoke curled upwards,
- 14:41carrying with it the lingering remnants of a mystery that had
- 14:46once seemed unfathomable, yet had now been laid to rest,
- 14:51forever etched into the annals of local lore.
- 14:56This rather dramatic and sensational tale was initially
- 14:59recounted by the English travel writer and author Augustus Hare,
- 15:06who included it in his multi volume 1890s autobiography The
- 15:11Story of My Life under the section titled The Beast of
- 15:17Crogling Grange. The narrative reads like a
- 15:20chilling Horror Story, and given that Hare was known for
- 15:24publishing ghost accounts during an era when sensationally
- 15:27macabre and gothic pulp stories known as penny dreadfuls were
- 15:33popular, one might assume it to be a work of fiction.
- 15:37However, Hare presented it as a completely real and factual
- 15:42account without any indication that it was a fabrication.
- 15:47According to him, he had personally heard the story in
- 15:501874 directly from the actual owner of Crockling Grange,
- 15:57Captain Edward Fisher Rowie, whose family had owned the
- 16:01property for generations. However, Herr neglected to cite
- 16:05many names or detailed locations or provide verifiable sources,
- 16:12leaving the reader to ponder the veracity of the events
- 16:16described. Since Herr never admitted that
- 16:19any part of it was fictional and consistently presented it as
- 16:23fact, the account has become a perplexing mystery, sparking
- 16:28endless debates as to whether any element of it is rooted in
- 16:32truth or if it was a product of either Hare's or Fisher's
- 16:37imagination. One of the earliest skeptics to
- 16:40scrutinize his published work was Charles George Harper, an
- 16:45English author and illustrator. Harper embarked on a personal
- 16:50quest to Cumberland in 1924, determined to get to the bottom
- 16:55of the alleged events at Crawglin Grange.
- 16:59However, his investigation yielded perplexing results.
- 17:04As Harper delved into the heart of the local community, he
- 17:08encountered a startling revelation.
- 17:11Not a single resident had ever heard of a place called Krogling
- 17:15Grange, nor could they recall any whispers of its existence.
- 17:20It seemed as though this location had vanished into the
- 17:24midst of time, leaving no tangible trace behind.
- 17:29Undeterred, Harper scoured the countryside, seeking any
- 17:33semblance of the dwelling described in Hare's account.
- 17:37The closest he could uncover was a structure known as Kroglin Low
- 17:42Hall, yet its characteristics diverged significantly from the
- 17:47haunting depiction. Not only was it situated over a
- 17:51mile from the nearest church, but it stood as a two-story
- 17:55edifice, defying the single story description of the Grange.
- 18:00Moreover, the adjacent cemetery bore no evidence of the sinister
- 18:05crypt that had allegedly harbored the malevolent entity.
- 18:10Harper's quest to substantiate the existence of the Cranswell
- 18:14siblings proved equally fruitless.
- 18:18Despite his meticulous efforts, he could find no records or
- 18:22accounts that corroborated their presence in the region.
- 18:27Compounding this perplexity was the scarcity of clear
- 18:31information provided in Hare's narrative, rendering any attempt
- 18:36to trace their footsteps an exercise in futility.
- 18:40As Harper's investigation drew to a close, he found himself
- 18:44confronted with more questions than answers.
- 18:48The tale of the Kroglin Grange vampire, once presented as an
- 18:52unvarnished account of a supernatural encounter, now
- 18:56stood as a tantalizing controversy, its origins and
- 19:01truthfulness lost to time. This cast significant doubt on
- 19:06the authenticity of the Krogland vampire tale, suggesting that it
- 19:11was either an intentional fabrication or an unintentional
- 19:15distortion of the truth. However, Harper's conclusions
- 19:20would face scrutiny in the 1930s, when researcher F Clive
- 19:26Ross embarked on his own investigation in Cumberland.
- 19:30Ross's findings painted a different picture, one that
- 19:34hinted at a kernel of truth buried beneath the layers of
- 19:38mystery. According to Ross's research,
- 19:42Crogland Lohal was indeed the location Harrod described,
- 19:47though the property had since been demolished and a Chapel
- 19:50erected in its place. Remarkably, remnants of the
- 19:55original structure remained, including the foundation stones
- 20:00of an ancient church and graveyard, the very same hollow
- 20:05ground where the sinister entity was said to have taken refuge.
- 20:10Even more compelling was the discovery of a bricked up
- 20:14window. Rumored to be the very one
- 20:18through which the vampire had first appeared, tormenting the
- 20:23unsuspecting, Amelia Ross's findings injected a newfound
- 20:28sense of intrigue into the narrative, suggesting that
- 20:32beneath the sensationalized elements, there may have been a
- 20:35genuine encounter that sparked the tale's origins.
- 20:40The existence of the church and graveyard lent credence to the
- 20:44idea that something inexplicable had transpired in this secluded
- 20:50corner of the English countryside, an event so
- 20:54profound that it interlocked itself into local folklore,
- 21:00evolving and transforming with each retelling.
- 21:05Was it a mere fiction, born from the fertile imagination of a
- 21:09storyteller? Or did it represent a distorted
- 21:12recounting of a genuine paranormal event, its details
- 21:17obscured by the passage of time? The answers remained elusive,
- 21:24and the tale would continue to captivate generations to come.
- 21:29However, further investigations shed new light on the narrative.
- 21:34It was discovered that others in the region had indeed heard the
- 21:38story. An old, mostly forgotten local
- 21:42myth in the Fisher family was very much real.
- 21:47One local resident even revealed that Kroglin Lohal had once been
- 21:52referred to as Kroglin Grange until 1720, suggesting that
- 21:58although Hare may have mixed up the dates, at least some
- 22:02elements of this tale held true. This aligned with the findings
- 22:07of a journalist, Lionel Fanthrope, who in recent years
- 22:12concluded that at Krogland Grange and a vault matching the
- 22:16one in the story had existed in the 1600s.
- 22:20While the full scope of events remained obscured the
- 22:24possibility that an inexplicable encounter had indeed transpired
- 22:30in the secluded corner of the English countryside, the tale
- 22:34and origin of the Krogland Grange vampire remains
- 22:37uncertain. While the evidence neither
- 22:39confirms nor denies the events described, the lack of concrete
- 22:44proof poses a significant challenge for those seeking to
- 22:48validate the existence of a bloodthirsty creature of the
- 22:52night stalking the English countryside in the 1800s.
- 22:58It is highly plausible that this account originated from an
- 23:01unreliable second hand source, perhaps Fisher himself, who may
- 23:07have fabricated this story, drawn inspiration from
- 23:11sensational Gothic literature of the era, or distorted factual
- 23:16elements beyond recognition. Alternatively, it could be the
- 23:21work of pure fiction crafted by hair, skillfully weaving real
- 23:25locations into a narrative presented as truth for dramatic
- 23:31effect, only to be misconstrued as a potentially genuine
- 23:35encounter in later years, taking on a life of its own.
- 23:40Or perhaps it was merely a mischievous jest, a playful
- 23:45attempt to captivate and perplex.
- 23:50The truth remains elusive, leaving us to ponder the
- 23:53possibility as something inexplicable transpired in the
- 23:58secluded corner of Cumberland, transforming with each retelling
- 24:04and baffling those who dive deeper.
