Transcript
- 0:02Tad Eggleston: Good afternoon, everybody! Welcome back to 22 Panels in the Love & Rockets Book Club that I just barely managed to start recording, because our favorite cat, Eddie, is very much in the mood to have his head pet.
- 0:16Tad Eggleston: And only by my right hand, so it makes it much harder to do things on my computer, because…
- 0:23Tad Eggleston: Because right now, my right hand is required for scratching… scratching heads and necks.
- 0:30Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 0:31Tad Eggleston: Hey, Maria! Hey, Marisol, how you doing?
- 0:34Maria Pena: Good morning.
- 0:34Tad Eggleston: I'll do my best to flip pages. It's gonna be harder than normal right now.
- 0:40Maria Pena: To become ambidextrous.
- 0:42Tad Eggleston: Move the mouse over to the left hand.
- 0:45Marisol: We'll see how this works out.
- 0:49Tad Eggleston: He'll get bored eventually, maybe.
- 0:51Marisol: Possibly.
- 0:53Tad Eggleston: Or decide to actually sit in my lap, rather than… Where he can…
- 0:58Tad Eggleston: do the max amount of damage if I stop paying attention to him, which is where he's put himself now.
- 1:04Tad Eggleston: It's like…
- 1:05Tad Eggleston: You don't want your coffee knocked over? You don't want this stack of books knocked over? Then you better pay attention to me.
- 1:11Marisol: Better keep up with the scritches.
- 1:14Tad Eggleston: That's the rules!
- 1:18Marisol: This is the price we pay for having domesticated cats.
- 1:22Tad Eggleston: We didn't, though. They domesticated us.
- 1:25Marisol: That's fair.
- 1:27Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 1:28Tad Eggleston: It's also true.
- 1:29Tad Eggleston: They just followed the grain, and then we noticed that when cats were around.
- 1:34Tad Eggleston: There were no mice eating the grain.
- 1:37Tad Eggleston: And therefore, we started doing things like leaving milk out to keep the cats around, because the cats hypnotized us or something.
- 1:47Maria Pena: But yeah…
- 1:48Marisol: About right.
- 1:49Tad Eggleston: Cats just kind of.
- 1:50Maria Pena: In other words…
- 1:50Tad Eggleston: Farming, and… and made themselves necessary.
- 1:54Maria Pena: They were in cahoots with the rats, you know, they…
- 1:57Marisol: Oh, for sure.
- 2:00Maria Pena: I'll bring you something else. Come on, leave the humans to me.
- 2:05Tad Eggleston: Well, also, they've… they've got… they've got some sort of…
- 2:09Tad Eggleston: Like, part of their scent is, like, A hallucinogen for mice?
- 2:16Tad Eggleston: Oh! So, so, so, like…
- 2:20Tad Eggleston: Sometimes mice, like, literally don't realize that they're in danger. That's how cats can get away with playing with their food, because their food.
- 2:29Maria Pena: Who doesn't play.
- 2:29Tad Eggleston: Like, it's at a point where it doesn't realize that it's food anymore. It's like, oh, this is fun!
- 2:36Marisol: We're just hanging out, it's great!
- 2:40Marisol: You heard it here first, folks. Cat facts with 22 panels.
- 2:44Tad Eggleston: I think that they also have, you know, they always show snakes with those hypnotic eyes in, like, cartoons and stuff, but I think it's really
- 2:51Tad Eggleston: that's, because… My old kid, Matt, would sit in the window.
- 2:57Tad Eggleston: And stare at the birds in the trees?
- 3:00Tad Eggleston: and convince them that they had to dive bomb him. And they would dive bomb the window and knock themselves out.
- 3:11Marisol: Oh, no.
- 3:11Tad Eggleston: stop them. If he was in the window, you would hear, like, a bonk.
- 3:15Maria Pena: Hong.
- 3:16Tad Eggleston: Every 10 minutes or so.
- 3:19Marisol: Excuse me.
- 3:19Tad Eggleston: I once came home, and they were like…
- 3:21Tad Eggleston: Four passed out birds in the bushes in front of the house.
- 3:25Tad Eggleston: And you go over there, and you find out that, you know, you can see that there's a little bit of breathing, or a little bit of twitching. They're just passed out. They eventually get a… but, like.
- 3:34Tad Eggleston: Pretty certain all the birds in our neighborhood had regular concussions due to that cat.
- 3:38Maria Pena: Oh, gosh.
- 3:39Tad Eggleston: And all he did was… all he did was sit in the window.
- 3:44Maria Pena: I didn't do anything. It was just…
- 3:47Tad Eggleston: He convinced them! He convinced them that they had to go on the offensive.
- 3:51Marisol: Of course.
- 3:53Tad Eggleston: And somehow, they never learned that there was a window there.
- 3:57Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 3:58Tad Eggleston: And thank God they never broke it.
- 4:01Marisol: Yes.
- 4:02Tad Eggleston: That was always what I was worried, that I was gonna come home, and there was gonna be a broken window, because he somehow…
- 4:07Tad Eggleston: he somehow hypnotized, like, the big bird. Yup.
- 4:12Marisol: And it came crashing through.
- 4:14Tad Eggleston: I don't.
- 4:15Marisol: And then now you've got multiple problems, because then you've got a broken window, you got a bird in your house that's concocted.
- 4:22Marisol: And then…
- 4:22Tad Eggleston: Probably at that point, I'd have a dead bird in the house, because I think once they got in the house, Matt would have taken care of business.
- 4:29Marisol: That's fair.
- 4:31Tad Eggleston: I mean, just remembering some of the things he did to flies or mosquitoes.
- 4:37Tad Eggleston: Which Kelly dubbed Sky Raisins because of the way he treated them.
- 4:45Marisol: Such funny little creatures. I love cats.
- 4:47Tad Eggleston: They're great. I love cats, too.
- 4:48Maria Pena: too.
- 4:49Tad Eggleston: Don't get me wrong, my dog is amazing.
- 4:52Tad Eggleston: Particularly if he's listening.
- 4:54Tad Eggleston: Potato's a very good dog.
- 4:57Tad Eggleston: But cats are hilarious.
- 4:58Marisol: Yes.
- 5:01Marisol: So, Love and Rockets…
- 5:03Tad Eggleston: Number 10, Volume 2, Number 10. So this is the 60th regular issue of Love and Rockets.
- 5:11Tad Eggleston: Over, what, probably, like, 20 years at this point.
- 5:15Marisol: And is this the first one that's the big double issue?
- 5:19Tad Eggleston: Well, I think… I think if you… if you think… if you go back…
- 5:24Tad Eggleston: Issue 10, Issue 20, maybe Issue 30? They've kind of done bigger issues on the 10s.
- 5:34Maria Pena: Right.
- 5:34Tad Eggleston: In general.
- 5:36Marisol: Gotcha.
- 5:37Tad Eggleston: It's just been a while, because between… between, like, having all of the in-between year stuff, and… Whatnot.
- 5:45Marisol: That's true, we didn't go straight to Volume 2, we had a bunch of stuff in between.
- 5:48Tad Eggleston: Right. It's probably been almost a year since we did Issue 50.
- 5:54Maria Pena: Mmm, yeah.
- 5:56Tad Eggleston: Hello.
- 5:58Maria Pena: Alrighty.
- 6:02Tad Eggleston: But, we got a lot of Julio Stay in this one.
- 6:05Marisol: We did.
- 6:06Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 6:06Marisol: 2?
- 6:07Maria Pena: like.
- 6:08Marisol: Two stories? Like, the first and the last one for Julio's death?
- 6:12Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it was like, it was like the, the, I think.
- 6:16Maria Pena: one story… Divided into two?
- 6:19Tad Eggleston: Two pages at the beginning, and then I think… was it one or two at the end?
- 6:24Marisol: They have two.
- 6:29Maria Pena: Oh, another thing, yeah… oh, no, just one more.
- 6:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah, just once.
- 6:37Maria Pena: Yep.
- 6:38Maria Pena: One more.
- 6:39Tad Eggleston: And not at the end, near the end.
- 6:42Marisol: God.
- 6:43Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 6:44Maria Pena: So, but it felt more like,
- 6:49Maria Pena: I mean, we've just been getting these vignettes of a day in… Julio's World kind of thing.
- 6:56Maria Pena: Right. And this was more of a story about child abuse, I guess.
- 7:01Tad Eggleston: And this… this vignette has… has kind of some deeper…
- 7:06Tad Eggleston: Implications on a lot of the vignettes that we have had.
- 7:10Tad Eggleston: We're, we're, like…
- 7:16Tad Eggleston: Julio's sister knows that this particular uncle is… not a good guy, so that implies that, like…
- 7:23Tad Eggleston: He had not been a good guy to her, or to the… when…
- 7:27Marisol: Yeah.
- 7:28Tad Eggleston: When they were young.
- 7:30Maria Pena: And then… but the people around…
- 7:32Tad Eggleston: And everybody kinda, kinda brushes her off.
- 7:35Maria Pena: Yeah, which is exactly what happens in real life.
- 7:38Tad Eggleston: And…
- 7:39Marisol: Oh, yeah.
- 7:39Tad Eggleston: And then… and then they come home, and the… the baby's missing, and it's like, oh, oh, no, I have… I found him! You didn't find him, you took him into the fucking woods yourself. The baby didn't go there on its own.
- 7:51Marisol: The dad left the uncle with the baby alone.
- 7:54Marisol: Right, yeah. And that was his opportunity.
- 7:57Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 7:59Tad Eggleston: But that… And the muds… the mudslide makes it… So, it's the… The dad, and…
- 8:09Maria Pena: Everybody.
- 8:10Tad Eggleston: Yeah, everybody except the bad uncle.
- 8:13Marisol: Yep.
- 8:16Marisol: Ain't that how it always goes?
- 8:18Tad Eggleston: But then… And then, their mom kind of surprises them.
- 8:23Tad Eggleston: Because they're worried it's gonna be hard to send mom away, or send Juan away, because, like, it's mom's brother, that sort of thing.
- 8:33Tad Eggleston: And then it's like, no, Julio, if Benjamin and Sophia say Uncle Juan did bad things, I believe them.
- 8:43Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 8:44Maria Pena: Yeah, because Julio wasn't denying that anything.
- 8:48Maria Pena: Juan did it, you know, like, his brother says, you know, Juan did it to you and to others.
- 8:54Maria Pena: Right. The only things you heard.
- 8:57Maria Pena: Julio says, so he, he actually…
- 9:01Maria Pena: Wants to keep the peace, and… Which is wonderful.
- 9:04Tad Eggleston: Well, and or he was that young.
- 9:08Maria Pena: He's blocked it out.
- 9:09Tad Eggleston: He might have also been a baby, so he might not remember.
- 9:12Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 9:15Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 9:16Maria Pena: What about that kid at the end that looks like, it's got a monobrow, like, cream color?
- 9:23Tad Eggleston: Well, and it seems to always be raining here. Have you noticed that?
- 9:27Maria Pena: But the rain is stopping at the end of…
- 9:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 9:31Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 9:33Marisol: Yeah, it's like, every time we get…
- 9:34Tad Eggleston: All of the Julio's Day stories are in the rain.
- 9:37Marisol: Always.
- 9:38Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 9:39Maria Pena: Even when he's in the city looking at the flappers, because obviously we must be.
- 9:43Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 9:43Maria Pena: 20s.
- 9:47Marisol: Rain all day, every day.
- 9:49Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 9:52Tad Eggleston: And then we go straight into Maggie without even any introductory page.
- 9:57Tad Eggleston: And man, was this Maggie story great.
- 10:01Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 10:01Marisol: So true.
- 10:05Marisol: So this is.
- 10:06Maria Pena: Way after the fire that,
- 10:09Maria Pena: burned Mrs. Galindo's house, which is Izzy's house.
- 10:13Tad Eggleston: Well, and I think these… I think these, these… these… druggy, spiritual, Satanist-type…
- 10:25Tad Eggleston: Dorks.
- 10:26Tad Eggleston: Dosed her drink.
- 10:29Marisol: Oh, for sure.
- 10:30Maria Pena: this.
- 10:31Marisol: See him do it, and, like.
- 10:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 10:33Marisol: Ben?
- 10:33Marisol: With the little bottle?
- 10:34Tad Eggleston: Well, and he said that he was dosing everybody else's drink, but I think he dosed Maggie's, too.
- 10:42Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 10:43Marisol: I figured he did with what she was seeing later on in the story.
- 10:47Tad Eggleston: Yeah. I mean, I guess what I didn't know for certain initially was, like, whether he was a…
- 10:54Tad Eggleston: So much of a dick that he hadn't…
- 10:59Tad Eggleston: That he dosed her without her asking, or whether or not she'd actually done any drinking, because she figures out pretty quickly that, like, they're… they're dicks.
- 11:10Tad Eggleston: But then, yeah, the trippier things go, and she's not feeling well, it's like, oh, no, they totally dosed her out.
- 11:19Marisol: Well, they at least had a sip or two.
- 11:22Tad Eggleston: The history of the house, yeah.
- 11:24Maria Pena: It does show her having a seat. Jaime doesn't show her, but… but you don't know. Was it a… was it a trip? Maybe that's the thing, maybe… was it a trip?
- 11:34Maria Pena: induced by the drink, or was it just, you know, the usual buggy, weird shit around?
- 11:39Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 11:40Maria Pena: You know, because, I mean, was it easy?
- 11:44Tad Eggleston: Well, and it's definitely playing with, like, Peyote, Vision Quests, and…
- 11:51Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 11:52Tad Eggleston: And that sort of thing, where, you know… Hallucinogens are used to specifically go after.
- 12:01Tad Eggleston: specific information.
- 12:03Maria Pena: Yeah, to open your…
- 12:05Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 12:07Marisol: open your mind up a bit.
- 12:08Tad Eggleston: Because what we start seeing is actually before Maggie's around.
- 12:14Maria Pena: Yes, Maggie was… I wasn't even born, so she meets Mrs. Galinda.
- 12:19Tad Eggleston: Oh, Mrs. Glindo, all happy to have moved in.
- 12:22Maria Pena: And then, later on, when she's sick and.
- 12:25Tad Eggleston: But getting cursed by these, these…
- 12:28Tad Eggleston: Ladies that she won't give money to.
- 12:32Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 12:33Maria Pena: And then she's sick in bed and stuff.
- 12:36Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 12:37Maria Pena: And then Maggie sees herself as a… as a… as a little toddler with… with Izzy.
- 12:42Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 12:44Tad Eggleston: Izzy.
- 12:45Maria Pena: And, Louise?
- 12:51Maria Pena: And that's very hectic shim, isn't it?
- 12:55Tad Eggleston: We get the moment where she decides it's okay for her to be Maggie, too.
- 13:01Tad Eggleston: Yeah. It's like, oh, he's… he's so nice to that lady, then he can call me Maggie.
- 13:07Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 13:09Maria Pena: That's such a great mixture of… of Hank Ketchum and Charles Schultz.
- 13:16Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 13:16Maria Pena: Like, the way that the dirt is… the cross-hatching on her is very Hank's Kitchen.
- 13:23Maria Pena: Right. And then the… the shape of the head and the…
- 13:27Maria Pena: the way the mouth works, it's all shorts. It's really cool.
- 13:33Tad Eggleston: And the backgrounds are… are… all Jaime.
- 13:37Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 13:41Maria Pena: Yeah, that's cool stuff. Oh, I love…
- 13:44Maria Pena: That, you know, that, that,
- 13:48Maria Pena: What is it? Second from the top on the left, with Maggie's little bottom. That is so cute.
- 13:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 13:55Maria Pena: You know, how those stiff little dresses that they put on.
- 13:58Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 13:58Maria Pena: They're a child, and they… they just…
- 14:00Marisol: Little poofy ones.
- 14:02Maria Pena: The Sierra underwear is so cute.
- 14:05Maria Pena: I mean, it's so beautifully observed.
- 14:08Marisol: And of course, she's getting all dirty and playing around in the pretty dress.
- 14:14Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:16Maria Pena: Oh yeah, she's filthy.
- 14:19Maria Pena: She didn't… she'd be…
- 14:21Marisol: No, we're not.
- 14:21Tad Eggleston: She looks like he…
- 14:23Marisol: I spent fingers.
- 14:23Tad Eggleston: He's been studying pig pen.
- 14:25Marisol: Yes.
- 14:26Tad Eggleston: Schultz's pig pen?
- 14:28Maria Pena: Haha.
- 14:32Tad Eggleston: But then we've got the, the, the teenage. She gets to see Leti again.
- 14:37Maria Pena: Is that Mrs. Galindo? The… when she's really old, when she says, why are you so sad? Ghost, that's Mrs. Galindo, isn't it?
- 14:47Maria Pena: Much later. So Maggie is the ghost, which is really,
- 14:52Maria Pena: Because she's, you know, in the past, I guess.
- 14:55Maria Pena: visiting the past, as it goes. Yeah.
- 15:02Marisol: She does this sort of thing for a good long while in this story.
- 15:06Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 15:08Maria Pena: It's like, one minute the house is in ruins, next minute it's back, and she keeps going in and out of…
- 15:14Tad Eggleston: Well, and then she finds out that it's been so long since she lived in the hou- er, her house, that, like…
- 15:22Tad Eggleston: The people don't remember her family being there, they only remember… People after her family.
- 15:30Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 15:31Tad Eggleston: Which has gotta be weird when, like, you think of this as your home, but you've been away from it for so long that…
- 15:39Maria Pena: Yeah, I just… I just went through that in El Salvador. I went to visit my old home, and, you know…
- 15:45Maria Pena: Nobody knows who we were there now.
- 15:48Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 15:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah, how long had it been?
- 15:51Maria Pena: 40… 40 odd years, yeah.
- 15:53Tad Eggleston: 40 years?
- 15:55Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 15:55Marisol: Wow.
- 15:56Maria Pena: I love this, this top panel here. I think that'll be my… I'm kind of putting my own…
- 16:03Tad Eggleston: party.
- 16:03Maria Pena: for that one. Yeah, because I… it was so nice to see them all young again, and…
- 16:09Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 16:10Maria Pena: And by the way, Hope is sitting on the back of Terry's chair, and Izzy's asleep, and it's just great.
- 16:20Marisol: Gang's all here, how we first saw them.
- 16:23Maria Pena: Oh, I hope he looks so cute in the next panel, it's just crazy.
- 16:28Tad Eggleston: And I love the, thank you, Izzy, you're a fine hostess, or, okay, bye, good rating!
- 16:38Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 16:40Maria Pena: And I love that, that, that, Penny saw a ghost, and it's Maggie, and she says, what did the ghost look like? More like somebody's mom, and that's Maggie.
- 16:52Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 16:53Maria Pena: They're so young, you know?
- 16:56Maria Pena: My Lord, Maggie's expression, like, oh boy.
- 17:01Marisol: Question on this.
- 17:03Marisol: What?
- 17:06Marisol: This, this bubble confused me here. In the right panel on the second row,
- 17:15Marisol: So was it more Luxe interior, or more Phyllis Diller? I don't get that.
- 17:22Maria Pena: Oh.
- 17:23Tad Eggleston: Luxe Interior was, would have been, like, commercials for a, furniture-type…
- 17:30Tad Eggleston: And Phyllis Stiller was an actress that played…
- 17:34Maria Pena: She was… Still was, like, a comedian, and she was really, like, older woman, but…
- 17:40Tad Eggleston: But I think…
- 17:40Maria Pena: Truly me.
- 17:41Tad Eggleston: I think she was also the mom on a specific…
- 17:46Maria Pena: Oh, right.
- 17:47Marisol: Like a sitcom?
- 17:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 17:50Maria Pena: Okay, but Phil is still around…
- 17:53Tad Eggleston: Not 100%, I'm checking right now.
- 17:55Marisol: Hmm, cause I know I've heard that name before.
- 17:58Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 17:59Marisol: I just don't know exactly who she is.
- 18:04Maria Pena: Yes, definitely.
- 18:04Tad Eggleston: Yo.
- 18:05Maria Pena: Actress.
- 18:05Tad Eggleston: Back in time…
- 18:07Maria Pena: She used to wear crazy hair, and… Crazy makeup, like, really.
- 18:11Tad Eggleston: No, she was on Full Houses herself.
- 18:15Marisol: Oh.
- 18:16Tad Eggleston: She… she was… she was on…
- 18:20Maria Pena: Is it that era? Jefferson's.
- 18:22Tad Eggleston: herself.
- 18:24Tad Eggleston: -
- 18:28Tad Eggleston: Well, no, she's just a voice on that one.
- 18:33Tad Eggleston: Maybe she wasn't a mom on anything.
- 18:40Maria Pena: Well, I don't think they're saying, somebody's mom.
- 18:44Maria Pena: Oh, yay.
- 18:46Tad Eggleston: Oh, more somebody's mom.
- 18:48Tad Eggleston: That's right, because it was… it was…
- 18:50Maria Pena: That's… that's about… about Maggie, and Maggie looks like somebody's mouth.
- 18:56Maria Pena: Was… was it more… It was a woman, was it Laxinterior or Philistilla?
- 19:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah, fill it, fill it.
- 19:04Marisol: distiller wood.
- 19:04Tad Eggleston: was a comedian that kind of looked old even before she was old, always had the permed hair, that sort of thing.
- 19:14Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 19:14Marisol: Do not show.
- 19:17Maria Pena: Luxe.
- 19:17Tad Eggleston: interior…
- 19:21Maria Pena: I… yeah, that's…
- 19:22Tad Eggleston: I mean, I guess there was… there was a… Lux Interior was… was a singer in the cramps, so, I mean…
- 19:30Tad Eggleston: Could have been that.
- 19:33Tad Eggleston: But it was a male singer in the cramps.
- 19:39Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 19:40Tad Eggleston: But that would have been a punk rock band that… that… that I could.
- 19:48Maria Pena: Oh, somebody's wrong.
- 19:52Maria Pena: In the morning, though.
- 19:53Tad Eggleston: Show a picture of Luxe Interior really quick.
- 19:57Tad Eggleston: Because… being that it's Jaime, and cramps are definitely era-appropriate .
- 20:07Maria Pena: But is it air-appropriate for the… for the young?
- 20:11Tad Eggleston: No, no, that's what I mean. It's era-appropriate for the young locos.
- 20:16Maria Pena: Okay.
- 20:16Tad Eggleston: That, I just shared the wrong one.
- 20:20Tad Eggleston: Oops.
- 20:22Maria Pena: Get it together, Ted.
- 20:24Tad Eggleston: I'm sorry.
- 20:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah. So, so that, that's luxury.
- 20:29Maria Pena: Superior. Oh, okay.
- 20:31Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 20:32Tad Eggleston: Cramps were mostly active in the late 70s, early 80s?
- 20:37Maria Pena: Oh, yeah.
- 20:41Tad Eggleston: Christy Wallace was the other… Better known as Poison Ivy.
- 20:47Maria Pena: Oh, okay, there you go. So the Luxe interior looks like an old lady there, like, like an old…
- 20:53Marisol: looks.
- 20:53Maria Pena: Crazy-looking age. Wow. With the makeup and the…
- 20:58Tad Eggleston: Well, the cramps… the cramps were… they called… well, I mean, as it says here, they called themselves Psycho Billy.
- 21:05Tad Eggleston: They were kind of a punk rock, rockabilly… Halloween… Bing.
- 21:17Maria Pena: Okay.
- 21:19Tad Eggleston: Almost.
- 21:19Maria Pena: Psychobilic Dothabili.
- 21:22Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 21:23Maria Pena: Da-da-da, stop.
- 21:24Tad Eggleston: But I don't know if anybody else is considered Psycho Billy, Gothabilly, or if that's just what is the best way to come up with what they were. Because, you know, they weren't quite punk.
- 21:35Tad Eggleston: They weren't quite rockabilly, and they definitely had that… that goth…
- 21:44Tad Eggleston: I mean, I'm trying to remember some of the song names, hopefully we've got some singles.
- 21:50Maria Pena: No, but what we're trying to establish is what do they mean? Like, what does… Right.
- 21:55Tad Eggleston: But that's what they meant.
- 21:55Maria Pena: Question. So the question means punkish, or Philistilla style?
- 22:01Tad Eggleston: And there's.
- 22:02Marisol: Oh! Okay.
- 22:05Maria Pena: So is it that, yeah, okay, so, you know…
- 22:08Marisol: No, that makes more sense. Thank you. Bear with me.
- 22:13Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 22:13Marisol: That answers my question.
- 22:19Maria Pena: Oh, and then we.
- 22:19Tad Eggleston: I'm like.
- 22:20Maria Pena: to.
- 22:21Tad Eggleston: You're the youngster.
- 22:22Maria Pena: speedy.
- 22:23Marisol: Yeah. This is all before my time.
- 22:26Tad Eggleston: Enjoy your time.
- 22:27Maria Pena: Oh, God, it's even before my time, but you know… I mean, it's… yeah.
- 22:33Tad Eggleston: This segment here was really crazy, when…
- 22:36Marisol: Yeah.
- 22:37Tad Eggleston: Seems like every time we saw… .
- 22:42Maria Pena: Easy.
- 22:43Tad Eggleston: Izzy, she was… she was not only In some crazy pose.
- 22:48Marisol: Yeah.
- 22:49Maria Pena: But also, Maggie's going through her whole history with Easy, so…
- 22:55Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 22:56Maria Pena: a death of Speedy.
- 22:58Tad Eggleston: Death this morning.
- 22:59Maria Pena: when… When, when, hope you weren't me sing.
- 23:05Maria Pena: I'm not sure about this tank one, what happened there? .
- 23:10Marisol: Me neither.
- 23:11Maria Pena: Can't remember that bit. There's a bit where it is gigantic…
- 23:17Marisol: Or she was right.
- 23:18Maria Pena: She was writing a book about… but not… Maggie was not included in it.
- 23:25Maria Pena: Yeah, so there's all these different, weird instances of easy… Staff, like, where she's… Hanging from the…
- 23:38Maria Pena: From the wall by her head.
- 23:40Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 23:42Maria Pena: Like, that's really fucking creepy.
- 23:45Tad Eggleston: act.
- 23:46Tad Eggleston: Popping up.
- 23:47Marisol: Yep.
- 23:48Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 23:50Maria Pena: I always… yeah.
- 23:51Tad Eggleston: The completely upside-down one.
- 23:55Maria Pena: And also, and these kids appear again, looking through the window into Izzy's house, so maybe that's what they used to do, trying to snoop.
- 24:05Maria Pena: And see her.
- 24:06Marisol: ugly.
- 24:11Maria Pena: And then.
- 24:12Tad Eggleston: But then we have, like, this seemingly well… way more put together Izzy actually arranging for the fire to be set, and that's just…
- 24:21Maria Pena: death.
- 24:22Tad Eggleston: Weird.
- 24:24Maria Pena: And while all this is happening, all of a sudden, Maggie's roots have grown out.
- 24:31Maria Pena: Like, her… Her hair's a lot longer. All of a sudden, yeah, her hair's longer, and her roots are showing to the middle of her head.
- 24:40Maria Pena: So it's like, was there, like, a time and space continuum?
- 24:47Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 24:47Maria Pena: Anything happened?
- 24:52Tad Eggleston: And then when we get back, she got the pool going.
- 24:55Maria Pena: Yeah, now she's back in the… Regular… in her regular work.
- 25:00Maria Pena: And… Talking to Hopi on the phone.
- 25:05Tad Eggleston: Apologizing for not being there for the surgery.
- 25:09Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 25:10Maria Pena: And, Poppy says, I love you, and she's… Again, confused. Once more.
- 25:19Maria Pena: That's right.
- 25:20Marisol: When it comes to Hopi, Maggie is always a confused mess.
- 25:24Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 25:26Tad Eggleston: That's not going anywhere anytime soon.
- 25:30Marisol: I wouldn't imagine it does.
- 25:33Maria Pena: Yeah, so there's that. I love that, the end, those last two frames, too. I love that.
- 25:40Marisol: Yeah, that's good.
- 25:41Maria Pena: But… yeah.
- 25:45Maria Pena: Oh, and here it is. So the next story.
- 25:48Tad Eggleston: Catching up on everybody.
- 25:50Maria Pena: Yeah, what… whatever happened to…
- 25:53Maria Pena: Ines and Bag Bag, and I remember them, and I remember… I don't remember Castle Radium, although…
- 26:00Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I don't remember Castle Radium, I don't remember Emaco.
- 26:04Marisol: I remember one of the.
- 26:05Maria Pena: code.
- 26:05Tad Eggleston: Do you remember Emaco?
- 26:07Marisol: No.
- 26:08Maria Pena: Look at the remote.
- 26:08Marisol: Remember our errata stigmata, that's it.
- 26:11Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I remember Arata Sigmata, I remember Inez and Bang Bang.
- 26:15Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 26:16Maria Pena: I don't know about Leonard and Bay, but I don't know.
- 26:19Tad Eggleston: They look familiar, but I didn't know their names.
- 26:23Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah. I definitely remember the Emiko's outfit.
- 26:28Maria Pena: Yeah. Just one of those, so… sci-fi jobs by Beto.
- 26:36Maria Pena: And then we have a little, analysis of,
- 26:41Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no.
- 26:41Maria Pena: I've always…
- 26:43Tad Eggleston: I almost… I almost feel like, causing trouble.
- 26:48Tad Eggleston: Cuz, cuz.
- 26:50Marisol: Oh, boy.
- 26:51Tad Eggleston: Beto and Shelly Bond are good friends, and Shelly is a huge David Bowie fan.
- 26:58Tad Eggleston: Aye.
- 27:00Marisol: Oh, boy.
- 27:02Tad Eggleston: So I feel like… I feel like there's… there's… there's mischief to be had here, if I feel like it.
- 27:08Marisol: There's opportunity to sow the seeds of chaos.
- 27:13Maria Pena: His, the character's expression is very apologetic, like, I'm sorry I'm saying this about Bowie, but, you know, he ripped off all these people's styles.
- 27:24Marisol: I'm gonna… I'm gonna say it anyway.
- 27:27Marisol: Let's be cool. I would honestly.
- 27:28Tad Eggleston: I honestly argue, though, that, like, he did it better than most.
- 27:32Maria Pena: Yeah, well…
- 27:34Tad Eggleston: Like…
- 27:35Maria Pena: There's a reason he and Jude…
- 27:36Tad Eggleston: the turns first.
- 27:38Tad Eggleston: Maybe they made the turns first, but he did it better.
- 27:42Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 27:43Tad Eggleston: I love Roy.
- 27:48Maria Pena: Yeah, this is, like, the end of Roark.
- 27:51Marisol: Yeah.
- 27:51Tad Eggleston: This was super fun, Roy.
- 27:54Maria Pena: She was a super fan, it's a pity that he paid the price at the end.
- 27:58Maria Pena: All the monsters in the zoo.
- 28:01Tad Eggleston: The frozen. That's what you get.
- 28:03Marisol: That's what you'd be looking for teasing the fruit.
- 28:06Maria Pena: That's right. He's singing, look at me, eating ice cream, and boom!
- 28:12Maria Pena: It's all his fault. He deserved to die.
- 28:18Marisol: Hmm…
- 28:19Maria Pena: I love that lady, that dead lady.
- 28:22Maria Pena: Tongue out, eyes wide open.
- 28:27Maria Pena: Nick?
- 28:29Maria Pena: Turn all the way to the back.
- 28:31Maria Pena: Oh, man, I don't know why I thought it found that very funny.
- 28:34Tad Eggleston: I, I love the, the little stunt boy.
- 28:38Marisol: Yeah.
- 28:40Maria Pena: Yeah, what's up? We've seen him before, haven't we? Yeah.
- 28:44Tad Eggleston: other Royce stories, yeah.
- 28:47Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 28:50Maria Pena: Slurping the brains of the men.
- 28:54Maria Pena: The epic battle of the Monsters was good.
- 29:02Maria Pena: It's a very bloody story.
- 29:06Maria Pena: And then…
- 29:07Marisol: What an end, though.
- 29:09Maria Pena: And I just noticed that there's this explosion here of the, that monster, and .
- 29:17Tad Eggleston: the first…
- 29:18Marisol: throat.
- 29:19Maria Pena: Yeah, and then in the next story, with the, you know, the Mario story, there's another explosion, and it's very similar. Like, you know, remember Al Jaffeine from Mad Magazine, and he used to, like, always have, like, vomit, and then…
- 29:33Maria Pena: at all.
- 29:34Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 29:34Maria Pena: Oh, the vomit always had chicken bones in it and stuff. It's a little bit like that. It's just funny, all the bits.
- 29:40Tad Eggleston: I love Dal Jaffe.
- 29:42Maria Pena: Yeah, me too.
- 29:46Tad Eggleston: This Julio estate was also cool. The…
- 29:50Tad Eggleston: the war's coming, I'm going to Europe.
- 29:54Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna take care.
- 29:55Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 29:58Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 30:00Maria Pena: Couldn't help me the last word. Who is she? Is she his sister?
- 30:05Tad Eggleston: I think so.
- 30:06Marisol: think so?
- 30:06Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 30:08Marisol: The older sister, right?
- 30:10Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 30:13Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 30:13Marisol: to be.
- 30:15Marisol: Cause it was just… her and…
- 30:18Maria Pena: Yeah, and a younger brother.
- 30:20Maria Pena: Yeah, that's right, yeah.
- 30:24Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 30:27Marisol: Yeah, the three siblings.
- 30:32Marisol: I do like those top two panels between the night and daytime.
- 30:37Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 30:38Marisol: I think it's… it's simple, but it's so…
- 30:42Maria Pena: Wonderfully done.
- 30:43Maria Pena: Yep.
- 30:46Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 30:49Maria Pena: This is good.
- 30:56Maria Pena: Okay, that's… I think this is the point where I thought, okay, this would be the end of the… of the issue, and then I turned the page.
- 31:03Marisol: Yeah.
- 31:03Maria Pena: Oh, shit, there's more!
- 31:04Tad Eggleston: And then it's like, oh yeah!
- 31:07Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah!
- 31:08Marisol: We have this other… we have a Mario story.
- 31:10Tad Eggleston: Maybe for the unknown.
- 31:12Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 31:12Marisol: I… I gotta be honest, I have lost the plot of this particular story.
- 31:18Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 31:19Marisol: I lost it a while ago, but…
- 31:21Maria Pena: I was hoping that it would all come clear in the last, install.
- 31:26Tad Eggleston: I'll do a little bit of recapping.
- 31:29Tad Eggleston: Oh, I ran away to try to protect you. No, you ran away from your family, prick. I don't want your protection.
- 31:37Tad Eggleston: I do… I do…
- 31:39Maria Pena: Oh, there's each one.
- 31:39Tad Eggleston: Not remember why they wanted to kidnap the son.
- 31:44Tad Eggleston: Because you've got the… People getting in trouble because they didn't manage to kidnap the son.
- 31:49Marisol: I don't even see…
- 31:50Maria Pena: Yeah!
- 31:51Marisol: They kidnapped him initially, I think he just kinda…
- 31:54Marisol: The kid just kind of got left behind somehow, or she.
- 31:57Tad Eggleston: Right, but you've got… what happened? You were supposed to get the Lillard kid.
- 32:02Marisol: Yeah.
- 32:07Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 32:10Maria Pena: And then, and then the grandmother ends up with the kid, which… but everybody's, like, really, really bummed that she ended up with the kid, and it's like, well, she's.
- 32:19Tad Eggleston: There's your explosion.
- 32:20Marisol: Yep.
- 32:21Maria Pena: That's where you're supposed to look at all the bits. I guess they're bits of people.
- 32:26Marisol: Just a few.
- 32:27Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 32:29Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 32:31Marisol: Like, I can't even fully remember what…
- 32:34Marisol: the dad escaped with. No, he escaped with a suitcase. Of, like, something.
- 32:40Tad Eggleston: That would either… Sync somebody or save somebody, I forget.
- 32:46Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 32:48Maria Pena: Well, they go… yeah.
- 32:50Maria Pena: It doesn't matter now, because it's dead.
- 32:53Marisol: Indeed.
- 32:57Maria Pena: And…
- 32:57Tad Eggleston: Mom became a badass.
- 32:58Maria Pena: That old lady that turns up at the end is like, who the fuck is she?
- 33:02Marisol: Yeah!
- 33:03Maria Pena: Teposperwinkle, it's like, I, thought the old man was the boss.
- 33:11Maria Pena: But no, this is a lady.
- 33:16Marisol: Final word?
- 33:17Marisol: That's me for the end.
- 33:18Tad Eggleston: zone.
- 33:19Marisol: They say in the title, that's it, the end.
- 33:22Maria Pena: Yeah, me for the unknown, for sure. The mother ends up looking like Rena Titan.
- 33:31Tad Eggleston: Oh, that's true. I like this one a lot.
- 33:35Marisol: I had to think about it a second. Like, what is that name? Who is that? Oh, I remember. Rena.
- 33:43Maria Pena: So, I didn't look him up, but who is Stefan de Leon? I'm looking him up.
- 33:49Tad Eggleston: Right now.
- 33:50Marisol: Yeah, I also did not look him up, and I also do not know who that is.
- 33:54Maria Pena: obviously.
- 33:55Tad Eggleston: I mean, I know what's.
- 33:56Maria Pena: A boxer.
- 33:56Tad Eggleston: And it sounds like he was a wrestler.
- 34:00Tad Eggleston: That's it.
- 34:01Maria Pena: Oh, a wrestler.
- 34:02Tad Eggleston: It also won… well, no.
- 34:04Maria Pena: Oh, yeah, yeah, wrestler, wrestler, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:07Marisol: A wrestler who became an artist?
- 34:11Tad Eggleston: Sounds like he was at least working on it. I'm trying to see if I've got… because I've got…
- 34:16Tad Eggleston: the… the Pro Wrestling Fandom page, I've got the IMDB fam… er, IMDB page.
- 34:23Tad Eggleston: But this feels like something that if we found a… Oh? I found his obituary.
- 34:30Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 34:31Maria Pena: Okay.
- 34:32Tad Eggleston: I was trying to see if there was a Wikipedia page, because that would be the… but let's look at the obituary, see what it says.
- 34:40Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 34:41Tad Eggleston: Survive by blah blah blah…
- 34:48Tad Eggleston: Stefan was a musician, illustrator, professional DJ, and former WWF wrestler who also wrestled independently under the name of the Superstar Destroyer.
- 34:58Marisol: Wow.
- 35:00Marisol: It's a lot of hats.
- 35:05Maria Pena: Okay. And he loves shamp.
- 35:10Maria Pena: I think the brothers love the three switches so much.
- 35:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 35:14Maria Pena: Oh, God.
- 35:15Tad Eggleston: But they're also big into wrestling.
- 35:18Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:26Tad Eggleston: Let me…
- 35:28Marisol: What is shimp?
- 35:30Maria Pena: Oh, he's one of the three stooges.
- 35:32Marisol: Oh.
- 35:33Tad Eggleston: At one time.
- 35:34Maria Pena: Well, there was… Curly, Larry, and Mo, and then Curly…
- 35:39Maria Pena: Curly kind of left, and he was replaced by Shemp.
- 35:43Tad Eggleston: So there's Stefan Daly.
- 35:44Maria Pena: Charlie.
- 35:45Maria Pena: Currently with bold.
- 35:48Maria Pena: Clearly one stature.
- 35:51Maria Pena: I used to love this too, just… Mmm…
- 35:58Tad Eggleston: It doesn't say much about him, so I think… I think… I think we have as much information about
- 36:04Tad Eggleston: Stephen DeLeon.
- 36:06Tad Eggleston: From this article, as we're finding.
- 36:09Tad Eggleston: anywhere else.
- 36:11Maria Pena: In a second.
- 36:13Maria Pena: He looks like a dick. Anyway.
- 36:15Marisol: Well, but…
- 36:18Maria Pena: I suppose… I suppose all wrestlers have to look like that.
- 36:23Tad Eggleston: Well, and it all… it also… no, even IMDB doesn't have much.
- 36:28Tad Eggleston: Like, from the writing here, that,
- 36:37Tad Eggleston: That… that… Beto had a personal relationship with him.
- 36:43Tad Eggleston: So…
- 36:44Maria Pena: Sorry, better.
- 36:47Tad Eggleston: So, like, he might look like a dick.
- 36:50Maria Pena: Oh, what did his… cartoons look like? Do you have…
- 36:55Tad Eggleston: No, that's… That's what I was looking for.
- 36:59Maria Pena: Okay.
- 37:00Tad Eggleston: But I wasn't… wasn't finding anything.
- 37:02Maria Pena: Art?
- 37:04Maria Pena: just say, Stefan de Leon, or maybe,
- 37:11Maria Pena: Images… oh.
- 37:12Marisol: Hmm.
- 37:19Maria Pena: No, this.
- 37:21Marisol: Mmm…
- 37:26Maria Pena: That's…
- 37:31Maria Pena: Hmm, okay.
- 37:35Maria Pena: Who knows?
- 37:38Marisol: Doesn't even show his art?
- 37:42Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, it actually… it says… that he was… becoming a cartoonist, so maybe… He hadn't… really.
- 37:55Marisol: Oh, that's fair.
- 37:58Tad Eggleston: gotten there yet?
- 38:00Maria Pena: What are you?
- 38:01Marisol: Hmm.
- 38:03Maria Pena: Okay.
- 38:06Maria Pena: Yeah, I can't find anything.
- 38:15Maria Pena: Okay, nope.
- 38:17Maria Pena: We're just sitting here silently going through.
- 38:20Tad Eggleston: Yep, yep, yep.
- 38:21Maria Pena: it's amazing.
- 38:22Tad Eggleston: La-dee-da! The internet should make noise while we're looking for things.
- 38:26Maria Pena: It is.
- 38:28Maria Pena: A shame.
- 38:29Marisol: I mean, it did used to make noise when you turned it on, so… It did!
- 38:32Maria Pena: Yeah, not anymore.
- 38:35Tad Eggleston: We should find that drop, so anytime we start to… start to… to… to… to fall down rabbit holes, we'll just play the… the dial-up.
- 38:45Marisol: The dial-up noise.
- 38:47Maria Pena: Maybe, huh?
- 38:48Marisol: Oh, my…
- 38:48Maria Pena: Maybe some… maybe we need some, like, you know, elevator music or something.
- 38:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 38:55Maria Pena: The royalty-free elevator.
- 38:57Marisol: their music?
- 39:00Tad Eggleston: Did you go through these, lists of comics, Maria? This is an impressive list.
- 39:06Maria Pena: Yeah, I… I was…
- 39:09Tad Eggleston: Frankly, Mario's list is the most impressive.
- 39:12Maria Pena: Yeah, that's… well, that's the thing that I thought I had more in common with Mario than with.
- 39:18Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 39:18Maria Pena: Jaime. Like, I thought, yeah, Mario's list is more my bag.
- 39:26Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 39:29Marisol: And now I gotta go back and look at those lists.
- 39:31Maria Pena: Although, you're not…
- 39:32Tad Eggleston: No, and I'm…
- 39:33Maria Pena: I'm gonna have to dig.
- 39:33Tad Eggleston: up some of them.
- 39:35Tad Eggleston: They only…
- 39:36Maria Pena: include, Dan Klaus, which is good. Dan Klaus.
- 39:40Tad Eggleston: Some of it I know, but I don't no-no.
- 39:43Maria Pena: There's a lot of obscure stuff in there.
- 39:47Tad Eggleston: Well, I'm fascinated.
- 39:49Maria Pena: Like, he calls out, .
- 39:53Tad Eggleston: a, comic adaptation.
- 39:56Tad Eggleston: Lady Chatterley.
- 39:57Maria Pena: He's lover.
- 40:01Maria Pena: I'm looking at that art in that cover, and it doesn't look like something…
- 40:07Tad Eggleston: It's so…
- 40:07Maria Pena: the one I looked at for a long time.
- 40:10Tad Eggleston: Well, but that just makes me assume that the storytelling's gonna be that much better.
- 40:15Tad Eggleston: Cause, like, when it comes to…
- 40:19Tad Eggleston: To comics, it's not just about the pure quality of the art, it's about how you tell the story with the art.
- 40:25Maria Pena: Oh, absolutely, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:27Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 40:28Maria Pena: Like, I was really happy that… It's great.
- 40:34Maria Pena: I've never seen… that, to me, that looks more… That is more fun.
- 40:41Tad Eggleston: Oh, am I still scaring this screen, not the comic screen?
- 40:47Marisol: Yeah.
- 40:47Maria Pena: I'm showing you my screen the Kindle.
- 40:50Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 40:51Maria Pena: I was… I was happy to see the fabulous Fairy Freak brothers in Mario's list.
- 40:58Maria Pena: So, then, I used to.
- 41:00Marisol: There was a Hot Wheels comic?
- 41:03Maria Pena: Yeah, I did.
- 41:03Tad Eggleston: I didn't know about that either. And Alex Toth?
- 41:06Tad Eggleston: Doing Hot Wheels?
- 41:09Maria Pena: Oh.
- 41:10Maria Pena: Well, I love that Mario listed Alex Toth and Joe Hubert, because they're some of my favorite artists.
- 41:19Maria Pena: 2… and Tarzan Comics, because I…
- 41:23Maria Pena: I was a big fan, thousand calls.
- 41:26Tad Eggleston: Hot Wheels Art Play.
- 41:29Tad Eggleston: Alex Toth.
- 41:35Maria Pena: Oh, yeah, because they, they had this, this… These, comics.
- 41:41Marisol: Did not realize that they had Hot Wheels comics. I learned something today.
- 41:44Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 41:45Maria Pena: Bye.
- 41:46Tad Eggleston: DC, even.
- 41:47Maria Pena: Fair, very easy.
- 41:48Marisol: Oh.
- 41:48Maria Pena: Peace.
- 41:50Tad Eggleston: In the 70s.
- 41:51Maria Pena: I've read that I wish I had, you know, our…
- 41:55Tad Eggleston: I mean, this is definitely some… some tooth art.
- 41:58Maria Pena: just Alex Stoth, yeah.
- 42:00Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 42:02Maria Pena: No, he's just… he's one of mine.
- 42:04Marisol: Hi!
- 42:05Maria Pena: at the top.
- 42:05Marisol: I need to be better about my writers and artists for comics. I know very few names.
- 42:13Tad Eggleston: It's a… it's a never-ending… Journey.
- 42:19Tad Eggleston: like…
- 42:20Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 42:20Tad Eggleston: been good writers for… I mean…
- 42:23Tad Eggleston: I've been pretty good with writers for as long as you've known me.
- 42:28Tad Eggleston: But it's really only in, like, the last 4 or 5 years that I've gotten any good at knowing who the good artists are, much less being able to look at something and
- 42:39Tad Eggleston: have much…
- 42:44Tad Eggleston: Chance at all of going, oh, that's so-and-so.
- 42:47Tad Eggleston: You know, I mean, there are a handful of artists.
- 42:50Maria Pena: Obviously, the…
- 42:51Tad Eggleston: When it's Sienkiewicz, I generally know it's Sienkiewicz. When… when it's Dustin Wen, I generally know it's Dustin Nguyen. Scotty Young, I generally know as Scotty Young, you know?
- 43:02Marisol: Yeah, Scottie Young is very… identifiable in his stuff.
- 43:06Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 43:07Marisol: It's just that sometimes you guys talk about… artists or writers who…
- 43:12Marisol: I'd never even heard of the name, or me.
- 43:15Maria Pena: Right. So far back. I'd heard…
- 43:18Tad Eggleston: A lot of the ones we're talking about, about, like, we're going into the 50s, I mean, we're talking about people that are before my time, but that I've learned about.
- 43:27Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 43:27Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 43:29Maria Pena: Yeah, no, it's,
- 43:33Maria Pena: Being an artist, obviously, I've always been more, I've always, concentrated on the artist, so I still don't know who writes the stuff, I just, you know, I just know the artist. I love this, this back, this.
- 43:49Tad Eggleston: I love this.
- 43:50Maria Pena: Catalog cover, or whatever it is, that is awesome.
- 43:55Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:56Maria Pena: I absolutely love that.
- 43:58Tad Eggleston: I love… I love the three… the… the 3-panel…
- 44:02Maria Pena: Yep.
- 44:03Tad Eggleston: Back page, back page, too.
- 44:06Maria Pena: I remember going to this empty lot behind our house, and coming back covered head to toe in dust. That reminds me of, you know, like, they were… they were building something, and they had dug out all this really dusty
- 44:22Maria Pena: stuff.
- 44:23Marisol: Yeah.
- 44:23Maria Pena: You get… come back, and you'll be covered in it.
- 44:26Marisol: But, like, those are the best spots to play. Of course you gotta go there.
- 44:30Maria Pena: Yeah, there's machinery and shit. Of course.
- 44:38Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 44:41Maria Pena: So, Charles Burns… This is a hefty.
- 44:45Marisol: one.
- 44:48Maria Pena: I'm just looking at the list of ours.
- 44:50Tad Eggleston: Yeah, but I think we also brought a number of things, kinda…
- 44:55Tad Eggleston: I think, like, the next issue is gonna be kind of fresh starts on a lot of things.
- 45:00Marisol: Yeah, because we ended Mario's story, Me for the Unknown.
- 45:04Tad Eggleston: It definitely ended Mario's story, but like…
- 45:09Marisol: We ended A Maggie story.
- 45:14Maria Pena: Yes.
- 45:16Tad Eggleston: And I feel like we're at kind of an inflation.
- 45:19Maria Pena: point in all the…
- 45:20Tad Eggleston: stay.
- 45:22Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 45:23Maria Pena: It looks like, Ray is back in the next… next episode, next issue. I've… I've started to look ahead, which is not something that I normally do.
- 45:34Marisol: No, I…
- 45:35Tad Eggleston: Edit.
- 45:37Maria Pena: But.
- 45:39Tad Eggleston: Alright, let's see.
- 45:40Maria Pena: Peak.
- 45:40Tad Eggleston: Let's talk some panels.
- 45:42Marisol: Oh, gosh.
- 45:44Maria Pena: Alright, studio.
- 45:45Marisol: Probably the hardest part.
- 45:46Tad Eggleston: Your Jaime panel, Maria?
- 45:48Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I love that panel. I normally like a really, a really dynamic panel with lots of storytelling, but this has a lot of storytelling as well. I mean, they obviously just had a
- 46:02Maria Pena: Okay, because it'll be someone's birthday, and, you know, like, there's a lot of storytelling in that panel, and it.
- 46:08Tad Eggleston: Is it somebody's birthday, or is it just Maggie and Hopi being Maggie and Hopi?
- 46:13Maria Pena: Could be, but they do have… they do have.
- 46:16Marisol: Could be both.
- 46:18Tad Eggleston: I mean, I don't see anybody saying happy birthday at any point, so, like.
- 46:23Maria Pena: Feels like you could do…
- 46:24Tad Eggleston: Either way.
- 46:26Marisol: But all the locals are there, and it's…
- 46:29Tad Eggleston: He's talking about when they were first molested.
- 46:33Maria Pena: Yeah, that's the.
- 46:34Tad Eggleston: Another thing, like, if you don't read the words, this looks like everybody's just having a good time, blah blah blah, and then you start reading, it's like, well, I was molested when I was six, beat that, try four!
- 46:46Maria Pena: They have…
- 46:48Marisol: The weirdest conversation.
- 46:50Tad Eggleston: Does rangers count, or does it have to be relatives?
- 46:56Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 46:58Maria Pena: But it's a great way of approaching the subject, I mean, it's like, you know…
- 47:03Tad Eggleston: Ben Hopi, like, you didn't…
- 47:05Tad Eggleston: That didn't happen to you for reals. Fuck no, unless you count my dad walking in on me wankin'.
- 47:11Maria Pena: Sorry, you're bullshitter, I win.
- 47:14Maria Pena: But, you know, these are resilient women, they're just like, yeah, I got molested, I can laugh about it, or be, you know, I mean, I'm sure it doesn't take away from the trauma, but it's taking…
- 47:26Marisol: Right.
- 47:26Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 47:27Maria Pena: it, you know.
- 47:27Marisol: It's one of those things you, you wallow in it, or… You'd laugh and joke.
- 47:34Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 47:35Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 47:36Maria Pena: One of, you know.
- 47:37Marisol: If you don't like.
- 47:38Maria Pena: I should plan for everything, yeah.
- 47:40Marisol: Yeah.
- 47:42Marisol: Hello.
- 47:44Maria Pena: So… That was mine for… Jaime?
- 47:50Tad Eggleston: I think my Jaime…
- 47:54Maria Pena: As usual, there's a ton of them.
- 47:56Tad Eggleston: Oh, there's so many choices.
- 48:01Marisol: I know mine, for sure, has to be…
- 48:04Marisol: It's a couple pages after this where Maggie's walking with, like, the pack of dogs.
- 48:10Maria Pena: Oh yeah, that was a good one.
- 48:12Marisol: Oh, that…
- 48:13Maria Pena: too, I was like, oh man, that's a good panel.
- 48:18Maria Pena: You know what I, I've taken to doing?
- 48:23Maria Pena: Yeah, the side-on one, Marisol, or…
- 48:27Maria Pena: Top down.
- 48:28Maria Pena: I mean, they're all pretty good.
- 48:30Marisol: Yeah, I honestly have been having a hard time choosing between both panels in the second row, the one where we see the side view, and then the up view.
- 48:40Tad Eggleston: Well, then we'll just.
- 48:41Marisol: Angular.
- 48:41Tad Eggleston: row.
- 48:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 48:44Maria Pena: get both of them. You know what I've been doing? You know how if you click on the app, on the Panels app, you see all the pages little at the bottom?
- 48:55Maria Pena: That's… if you scroll through those, you can kind of see the composition of the panels in thumbnail form, like, and I kind of…
- 49:05Marisol: Oh!
- 49:05Maria Pena: I remember noticing that one with Maggie, with the side on one, because it looks good, really… even really small.
- 49:12Maria Pena: It looks really good.
- 49:14Maria Pena: I don't… it does it on my iPad, I don't know if it… maybe it doesn't do it, I don't know.
- 49:18Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 49:19Tad Eggleston: I think…
- 49:20Maria Pena: So you can scroll, you get your, you know.
- 49:22Marisol: Yeah.
- 49:23Maria Pena: note of the pages, you can scroll the bottom. I think… And you can really see.
- 49:28Tad Eggleston: For me, it's Maggie… Going into a rent.
- 49:33Maria Pena: That's fantastic.
- 49:34Tad Eggleston: Ignoring… Ignoring being called.
- 49:39Maria Pena: She just needs a bit of time on her own.
- 49:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 49:44Tad Eggleston: I just told Hopi I love her.
- 49:46Tad Eggleston: Now I'm going to be alone.
- 49:52Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 50:02Tad Eggleston: There are a lot of good options for Beto, too.
- 50:07Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 50:09Maria Pena: Well, I think I'll go with the… Thanks for…
- 50:13Marisol: You sold us your panel for hers.
- 50:16Marisol: Ahmed, did you.
- 50:17Maria Pena: Explosion of the…
- 50:18Tad Eggleston: I just did, her walking into her apartment.
- 50:20Marisol: Oh, right.
- 50:21Tad Eggleston: Ignoring the fact that she's being called.
- 50:23Marisol: I don't know, I don't know why, my brain had a moment where it refused to process English. Gotcha.
- 50:31Tad Eggleston: I get that.
- 50:32Marisol: That happens.
- 50:33Tad Eggleston: I get that.
- 50:36Tad Eggleston: So you're, you're going with the exploding monster?
- 50:40Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 50:41Maria Pena: Because I thought that was so fun.
- 50:44Tad Eggleston: I think I'm going with Powie Zowie.
- 50:47Maria Pena: Bowie, Zoe.
- 50:50Maria Pena: 5 pounds that week.
- 50:53Tad Eggleston: Stunt boy, howie zowie.
- 50:56Maria Pena: Oh, you know what else was good? And, you know, I'm not gonna… I'm gonna keep… keep it to the monster explosion, but right after the explosion.
- 51:04Maria Pena: when Roy is dying, and his hand… the next row, his hand is kind of still twitching, and then he stops, and I thought.
- 51:13Marisol: Oh, that is a good one.
- 51:14Maria Pena: That's a good one, yeah.
- 51:17Maria Pena: Because it just tells you he's gone.
- 51:20Maria Pena: And then they're all in heaven.
- 51:22Maria Pena: Moving down, let's… It's pretty awesome.
- 51:28Tad Eggleston: It's the same page, it's literally right underneath me.
- 51:30Marisol: Yeah.
- 51:31Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah. Explore.
- 51:32Marisol: explosion.
- 51:33Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 51:34Marisol: I think mine's gotta be the… the little…
- 51:38Marisol: what would you call it? That bottom left one, where they're just all standing together up in the clouds.
- 51:46Maria Pena: Yeah, they're in heaven.
- 51:48Tad Eggleston: It's, it's the Star Wars, Force Ghost panel.
- 51:55Marisol: Yes.
- 51:57Marisol: And they're just in the sky, in the clouds, over the city.
- 52:01Marisol: Skyline.
- 52:02Maria Pena: The protectors, the protectors of the city, because they defeated the monster.
- 52:11Maria Pena: Right, damn.
- 52:13Maria Pena: At great price, they paid the price.
- 52:16Marisol: Hmm.
- 52:17Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 52:19Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:21Tad Eggleston: So, next issue… what do we… let's preview next issue just a smidgen.
- 52:28Marisol: Just a little bit.
- 52:29Tad Eggleston: Just…
- 52:30Marisol: The next one also a double, or is it a single?
- 52:36Tad Eggleston: No, we won't preview the comics and stories that we'll do next. We'll just look at the next 11 rockets.
- 52:46Maria Pena: So this one's how many pages?
- 52:48Maria Pena: 35, okay, so this is our regular one.
- 52:51Marisol: Gotcha.
- 52:56Tad Eggleston: Starts with… When, one of Fritz's guys.
- 53:02Marisol: Her ex-husband?
- 53:03Tad Eggleston: women, yeah.
- 53:08Tad Eggleston: And then Jaime has a sto- oh, wow, a Jaime Non!
- 53:13Maria Pena: Mmm, a high man, sci-fi.
- 53:15Tad Eggleston: Based on the novel.
- 53:18Tad Eggleston: Home Sweet Stars by Flippy Benjamin.
- 53:21Marisol: Nope.
- 53:22Maria Pena: Boom.
- 53:24Maria Pena: this morning.
- 53:25Tad Eggleston: Then we stop.
- 53:25Marisol: Oh, hey, we're getting ready again.
- 53:27Tad Eggleston: And we get Ray back.
- 53:29Maria Pena: Yeah, right. And frogs.
- 53:30Marisol: mouth.
- 53:33Tad Eggleston: And then… some kids' stuff… And…
- 53:38Marisol: Another Mario story.
- 53:39Tad Eggleston: From Mario and Beto.
- 53:42Tad Eggleston: Oh, Rena!
- 53:45Marisol: Oh, hey!
- 53:47Marisol: See, look at that, Maria.
- 53:48Marisol: occur into existence.
- 53:49Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 53:50Marisol: It is!
- 53:52Maria Pena: Rena, and more Julio's day, another bit of Julio's day.
- 53:56Maria Pena: Who lives there, still there?
- 53:57Tad Eggleston: No, it looks like a good issue.
- 54:00Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Looks like a good issue.
- 54:03Marisol: Are we doing… wash.
- 54:06Marisol: And, one of… Luba?
- 54:10Maria Pena: Louis Luba.
- 54:11Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it'll be Luba Comics and Stories…
- 54:16Marisol: I think it's Fritz After Dark?
- 54:19Tad Eggleston: Is it?
- 54:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah, because we did Petra, Luba, and Fritz, right?
- 54:24Marisol: That was last time.
- 54:26Tad Eggleston: We're looking at Issue 7, Fritz After Dark.
- 54:30Marisol: Neat.
- 54:34Maria Pena: Oh, boy.
- 54:35Maria Pena: Luba, what… what am I looking at?
- 54:39Maria Pena: Issue 7.
- 54:40Marisol: Luba Comics and Stories.
- 54:46Maria Pena: Okay.
- 54:49Tad Eggleston: This one.
- 54:52Maria Pena: Oh.
- 54:54Maria Pena: Joy, what's it?
- 54:55Tad Eggleston: This is a mature readers only tag up at the top.
- 55:01Tad Eggleston: And you don't have to go far to know why.
- 55:07Maria Pena: So as you open, you see Fritz in a little negligee.
- 55:11Marisol: Yeah.
- 55:12Tad Eggleston: their guns.
- 55:13Marisol: With their guns.
- 55:15Tad Eggleston: Alrighty, well, it is always a joy.
- 55:20Tad Eggleston: For Marisol and Maria, this has been 22 Panels, and we will see you after the next page.
