- 0:09Speaker 1: Everybody, You're very welcome into the Irish Theeeters Podcast. We're
- 0:13Speaker 1: entering the second week of the NFL preseason and the
- 0:16Speaker 1: good news is the Pittsburgh Steelers are still undefeated. You
- 0:20Speaker 1: may have seen the other night the Steelers got the
- 0:22Speaker 1: dub at Home and Acrasher Stadium in Pittsburgh over Ireland's
- 0:27Speaker 1: Don Wheeland and the Green Bead Packers. So want to
- 0:29Speaker 1: know the start the NFL preseason and you're all very
- 0:32Speaker 1: very welcome in. Before we start off, we've got a
- 0:33Speaker 1: great interview coming up today on the podcast. But folks,
- 0:37Speaker 1: just to euro where. Obviously, we're entering the second week
- 0:40Speaker 1: of the preseason, which means the Steelers play a football
- 0:42Speaker 1: game on late Friday night early Saturday morning at midnight
- 0:47Speaker 1: Irish time. The Steelers are going to go up against
- 0:50Speaker 1: the New York Jets at home in Pittsburgh, and the
- 0:53Speaker 1: Jets lost their first preseason game last week. Steelers obviously
- 0:56Speaker 1: with a win on the bounce. The reason I'm saying
- 0:58Speaker 1: that is, of course you want to watch it, but
- 1:00Speaker 1: if you're an Irish Steeters fan on the island of Ireland,
- 1:03Speaker 1: that game is free on the Steelers website. That information
- 1:07Speaker 1: will be shared on social media and across Steelers Island
- 1:11Speaker 1: platforms ahead of the game. Would entice everyone to check
- 1:14Speaker 1: it out. It's a free stream, free football, and an
- 1:17Speaker 1: opportunity to see some fantastic talent get ready for the
- 1:21Speaker 1: new season and also some young talent like quarterback Drawller
- 1:24Speaker 1: for example, get some reps and get experience in this
- 1:28Speaker 1: league for the Pittsburgh Steelers. So that Steelers Jets game
- 1:31Speaker 1: is free for Steelers fans across the island of Ireland
- 1:36Speaker 1: on Saturday morning late Friday night midnight kickoff time. We're
- 1:40Speaker 1: going to be back at some stage on Saturday or
- 1:44Speaker 1: on Sunday recap in the game of a special guest.
- 1:47Speaker 1: But today we've got an absolutely fantastic duo to speak to.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Last week, of course, we had Keanny Benton obviously congrats
- 1:53Speaker 1: to him on his new contract that news just came
- 1:55Speaker 1: out the other day, and his best friend Nick Herbig
- 1:59Speaker 1: joined us. I'll tell you what it's as good. This week, folks,
- 2:03Speaker 1: we have got Steelers stars Patrick Quinn and pet and
- 2:06Speaker 1: Wilson joining us. Hope you enjoy the interview and enjoy
- 2:10Speaker 1: the preseason game which is coming up for free for
- 2:13Speaker 1: Steeters fans. This weekend. Here's Patrick and Peyton chapon to Steeters.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Aren't for people watching, for Irishteeters fans listening. Delighted to
- 2:25Speaker 1: be here deep in the heart of Saint Vincent College
- 2:27Speaker 1: for Steelers training camp with two very special guests, pet
- 2:30Speaker 1: and Wilson. Patrick Quin, guys, you're very very welcome.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Hi d doing good, Thanks for having us.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Thanks for coming over last year, and we will talk
- 2:37Speaker 1: about that in Louis second, but probably just starting with yourself, Pitton,
- 2:41Speaker 1: how special is this place because there's not many teams
- 2:44Speaker 1: anymore in the NFL actually really go into camp. Moh,
- 2:46Speaker 1: this is a really special setup here, isn't it.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it's different than, like you said, most places. I mean,
- 2:52Speaker 2: we're here for literally three weeks straight and you don't
- 2:55Speaker 2: really see anyone but your teammates, to coaches and the
- 2:57Speaker 2: people in the building. So I mean it's a great
- 2:59Speaker 2: oppertun unity to get better as a team. But I
- 3:01Speaker 2: don't think there's any place that we can get closer.
- 3:04Speaker 2: I think if we were leaving every single day, it
- 3:05Speaker 2: just feel like in season. You know, we're here, we're
- 3:08Speaker 2: together pretty much from six thirty am, seven thirty am
- 3:12Speaker 2: to eight o'clock, nine o'clock at night, so you definitely
- 3:15Speaker 2: you don't really have a choice but to build a
- 3:17Speaker 2: bond with your teammates and your brothers.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Puch, was it like walking down and then walking up
- 3:21Speaker 1: those famous steps after practice and the amount of fans
- 3:24Speaker 1: that are here screaming your nem and sort of just
- 3:27Speaker 1: looking to see you as well?
- 3:28Speaker 3: Yeah, the walk sucks, going up and down the stairs
- 3:30Speaker 3: on your legs hurt, But I mean it's exciting. I
- 3:33Speaker 3: think the amount of fans that we have at these
- 3:36Speaker 3: practices is really exciting, you know, for them to get
- 3:38Speaker 3: a glimpse of how we go about our early day,
- 3:41Speaker 3: but also knowing that they're taking the time out of
- 3:42Speaker 3: their day to come out and support us. So it's
- 3:44Speaker 3: a real cool thing. And socially being down here in Theatrol,
- 3:47Speaker 3: you know, you're not in the actual city where we
- 3:49Speaker 3: play at, but it's just a good vibe, say.
- 3:52Speaker 1: With yourself and just for the booth of you guys
- 3:54Speaker 1: in second but obviously you guys playing Dublin last year
- 3:57Speaker 1: and we'll talk about that game and just in the
- 3:58Speaker 1: Wei Sacon were you aware of, but just stop really
- 4:02Speaker 1: special connection that the Steelers have to the Island of
- 4:05Speaker 1: Ireland before the game or is this something that's been
- 4:07Speaker 1: spoken to you guys at a team level.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Me personally, I really didn't know much about it until
- 4:12Speaker 3: Mike Tomas started talking about it before the game. You know,
- 4:15Speaker 3: we had like a whole meeting and Art came in
- 4:17Speaker 3: and started talking about it. Man, you kind of see
- 4:20Speaker 3: the importance behind it, just learning all the history from it.
- 4:23Speaker 3: So it was a cool thing though to learn.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Awesome. Was it your first time in Ireland?
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it was my first time. I'm pretty sure I
- 4:31Speaker 2: added the country. So it was a pretty cool experience
- 4:33Speaker 2: for me. Like you said, I didn't know the history
- 4:36Speaker 2: too much. But coach Mike Tomlin he really addressed it
- 4:39Speaker 2: and he made sure that we knew the relationship that
- 4:42Speaker 2: the Steelers had with Ireland. So it was pretty cool
- 4:45Speaker 2: to go over there and play and be able to
- 4:47Speaker 2: represent the Steelers in that way.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Let's talk a wee bit about that game. It was
- 4:50Speaker 1: hard to believe it's almost a year old. If not
- 4:51Speaker 1: the high fast time flights. You two both put all
- 4:54Speaker 1: the show in Crew Park, peeting with yourself like a
- 4:57Speaker 1: career high thirteen tackles. The call him is a record
- 5:00Speaker 1: twenty two point four eight mile Perarchia Steine of Jordan
- 5:04Speaker 1: Oddison at the one yard line talked us about that
- 5:07Speaker 1: playing what it was like with it was fan's Finkle Park.
- 5:09Speaker 2: It was really cool just the fans in general. We
- 5:12Speaker 2: kind of joke about it. But when you play a
- 5:14Speaker 2: game over here, like they cheer at certain times. You know,
- 5:17Speaker 2: if your team does well, they cheer. But over there
- 5:19Speaker 2: they were just cheering the whole time. So that was
- 5:21Speaker 2: that was different, But it was really cool, And I
- 5:24Speaker 2: mean that play is just kind of the culture that
- 5:25Speaker 2: we have built. I think if anybody else was in
- 5:28Speaker 2: that position, they had done the exact same thing every
- 5:31Speaker 2: every day we practice. We we we finished, We finished
- 5:35Speaker 2: to the end zone. It's great having DK around because
- 5:38Speaker 2: you get to chase him around. He's pretty fast. But
- 5:40Speaker 2: I mean, it's just a culture that we have here
- 5:42Speaker 2: and the and the grit and the willingness that we're
- 5:44Speaker 2: willing to play with.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I think anybody would tell a BOFE lads the performance
- 5:48Speaker 1: defensively on that last five in the slack game. Just
- 5:50Speaker 1: stand on the sideline watching that and seeing the titles.
- 5:52Speaker 1: We was just very very special that Patrick, you had
- 5:56Speaker 1: a great start to the game, and I'm saying it
- 5:58Speaker 1: because you sacked Carson Wentzey believe in the first few
- 6:00Speaker 1: minutes that really sat the tone go and I think
- 6:02Speaker 1: you might have got that cry going after the terrible titles.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Were we able at the start?
- 6:05Speaker 4: Yeah? It was crazy.
- 6:07Speaker 3: You know, it was just something that we actually just
- 6:08Speaker 3: put in that week because you know, Tej and Alex
- 6:12Speaker 3: and all those guys on the edge just get chipped.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Pretty much all every third down or any passing down.
- 6:16Speaker 3: So there's something that we put in and it was
- 6:18Speaker 3: just exciting just to you know, try to get our
- 6:21Speaker 3: team fired up, get the fans fired up, and just
- 6:23Speaker 3: going out there and making them play for our team.
- 6:25Speaker 1: We all know that Staters fans travel probably the best
- 6:28Speaker 1: in the league, so so well, so I'm gonna get
- 6:30Speaker 1: you guys in trouble night for both of You's where
- 6:32Speaker 1: does an atmosphere and Dublin runk up in terms of
- 6:34Speaker 1: what you've experienced in the league so far.
- 6:37Speaker 3: I don't play it in some Electric games, but I
- 6:39Speaker 3: think that was probably top two or three for sure.
- 6:42Speaker 3: I think it was just like like you said, like
- 6:44Speaker 3: it's the entire time. Like I even talked about it
- 6:46Speaker 3: after the game. Like it's the entire time they're into it,
- 6:48Speaker 3: like first down, second third, third down, you're like holding
- 6:51Speaker 3: your helmet trying to hear everything that's going on, like
- 6:53Speaker 3: you're trying to talk to the team that you got
- 6:54Speaker 3: a shout like it was just every single play, every
- 6:57Speaker 3: single play, every single play is like loud, so it
- 6:59Speaker 3: was talk to the third for me.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I said, simpers Alfie.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Yeah, it was just a cool experience. Like I said,
- 7:05Speaker 2: I don't think I'd ever been out of the country
- 7:07Speaker 2: before then, so just to go out of the country
- 7:09Speaker 2: in itself was pretty cool. And then to play a
- 7:11Speaker 2: game over there was awesome. And like you said, that
- 7:13Speaker 2: atmosphere was second to none. Maybe you know, we Pittsburgh
- 7:18Speaker 2: always does a great job with that atmosphere. But whether
- 7:20Speaker 2: we're on the home, whether we're home or away, it
- 7:22Speaker 2: doesn't matter. But that was a really cool atmosphere In Ireland.
- 7:24Speaker 1: You're both welcome back anytime you like you're talking about,
- 7:28Speaker 1: you know, the first time out of the country, you're
- 7:30Speaker 1: going to Paris that are on this year? Yes, sir,
- 7:32Speaker 1: how's your French week?
- 7:33Speaker 2: No? Not very good, not very good.
- 7:35Speaker 1: No, I saw the France iconic stadium. Have you seen
- 7:38Speaker 1: much of about before. That is going to be a
- 7:40Speaker 1: cracker of a game. The first Every Game in Front
- 7:42Speaker 1: scene took a French connections as well ordership the city
- 7:45Speaker 1: of New Orleans. You guys are really wouldn't try and
- 7:47Speaker 1: spoil the party?
- 7:48Speaker 2: Ye, yes, sir, yes, sir. I'm really excited, just similar
- 7:52Speaker 2: to last year. Just excited to get over there and
- 7:54Speaker 2: play with these guys. Excited to see you guys in Paris.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Are you studying up in the French?
- 7:58Speaker 1: Oh?
- 7:59Speaker 4: So Louisiana. So it's like he goes a little bit
- 8:02Speaker 4: in there and stuff, so I know a little.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Bit, but nothing crazy Like I'm going to make a
- 8:05Speaker 1: mental note for the press covers and the Friday and
- 8:07Speaker 1: Parslan it's ark Go and Sevan sort of seeing the crack.
- 8:10Speaker 1: It's great for Stads fans internationally to get you guys
- 8:12Speaker 1: over again and people listen to this and watching this.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Some of the Irish fans are going to fly over
- 8:16Speaker 1: for that, and then there's also a big representation across Europe.
- 8:19Speaker 1: So it's going to be great in terms of this year.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Obviously there's a whole new mantra, there's new leadership in
- 8:25Speaker 1: terms of coaches. If we start with the defensive coordinator
- 8:28Speaker 1: and pitting Patrick Graham covied, what's he been like over
- 8:31Speaker 1: the first few weeks? And I know we're very already
- 8:32Speaker 1: in camp, but what's he been like so far?
- 8:34Speaker 2: Yeah, he's been great, very very detailed in his approach.
- 8:38Speaker 2: I really enjoy his schematics and the way that he's
- 8:40Speaker 2: installing it. He's he's honestly a really really good coach.
- 8:44Speaker 2: He teaches things really well and he gets on you,
- 8:47Speaker 2: but it's all out of love and you can tell that,
- 8:49Speaker 2: And I really just enjoy his intensity and like I said,
- 8:52Speaker 2: his detail every practice is second to none.
- 8:54Speaker 4: How does he compare Patrick, Yeah, I think you could
- 8:58Speaker 4: tell he loves the gang.
- 9:00Speaker 3: It's just like from the first day, in the way
- 9:02Speaker 3: he talks about it and the way he approaches it,
- 9:05Speaker 3: you can tell he's really truly got a little for
- 9:06Speaker 3: the game. And like Peyton said, like he's so detailed
- 9:09Speaker 3: about every single thing, and he'll get on you about it,
- 9:11Speaker 3: but it's in a way that you're gonna be able
- 9:13Speaker 3: to learn it and accept it and be able to,
- 9:15Speaker 3: you know, be better moving forward. So I think he's
- 9:19Speaker 3: probably one of the best DC's I ever been around.
- 9:21Speaker 3: As far as just getting his players understand and knowing
- 9:23Speaker 3: the game, but him knowing the game and knowing like, hey,
- 9:27Speaker 3: we're gonna get.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Guys to move around, so we got to go up.
- 9:29Speaker 4: We can all go out there have fun.
- 9:30Speaker 1: It's could be exciting to see. And you mentioned earlier
- 9:32Speaker 1: all about the representation and you know, speaking about that
- 9:37Speaker 1: importance of Ireland coach Tomlan talking about it before the
- 9:39Speaker 1: doubling game, the phenomenal work he has done through at
- 9:41Speaker 1: the years and now with a new head coach and
- 9:43Speaker 1: coach McCarthy once he been.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Like, so far, it's been great. Obviously the scheduling and
- 9:49Speaker 2: stuff is a little bit different. The way we practice
- 9:51Speaker 2: is a little bit different. But honestly, just like I
- 9:54Speaker 2: said about PG Patrick, Grammy's very detailed. I really enjoyed
- 9:59Speaker 2: the schedule. It it feels like it's it's made for the players.
- 10:03Speaker 2: I think that he does a really good job in
- 10:05Speaker 2: his detail.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Were you excited whenever you heard the news that he
- 10:08Speaker 1: was going to take over.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you know the history of him, what
- 10:13Speaker 3: he's being able to accomplish as a coach, and like
- 10:15Speaker 3: Peyton said, you know a guy like that that has
- 10:18Speaker 3: did something that is going to be detailed in his work,
- 10:20Speaker 3: like he has everything in detail to the freaking second
- 10:23Speaker 3: throughout the day. So it's great having him. Obviously, like
- 10:27Speaker 3: I said, looking out, we've seen all he accomplished, so
- 10:30Speaker 3: you want to try to, you know, accomplish what he
- 10:32Speaker 3: accomplished and be able to help him like he knows
- 10:35Speaker 3: that he knows how to lead the way. So now
- 10:36Speaker 3: it's just the point of following him and just you know,
- 10:38Speaker 3: being able to use what he's teaching us for me.
- 10:42Speaker 1: And I'm sure you both agree. It was that press
- 10:43Speaker 1: conference when he was emotional about how much it actually
- 10:46Speaker 1: meant to him. He's obviously very local as well. It's
- 10:48Speaker 1: just going to be so exciting to see what happens
- 10:50Speaker 1: for a couple of quick ones for each year. Before
- 10:51Speaker 1: we finished off, Patrick, you called twenty twenty five like
- 10:55Speaker 1: a dying year and said, this year is going to
- 10:56Speaker 1: be your best as a Steeler. You must be up
- 11:00Speaker 1: going into this year, And yeah, I am.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Oh, you know, especially the first year I came in
- 11:04Speaker 3: and kind of left off where I left from my
- 11:07Speaker 3: old team, and then last year it was just I
- 11:10Speaker 3: started off hide and then just fell off. So but
- 11:13Speaker 3: I'm not how a correct Like I said in the
- 11:15Speaker 3: view about it, I know how to correct that. I
- 11:17Speaker 3: know how to go about it. My coaches know how
- 11:18Speaker 3: to help me. And it's just the point of me
- 11:20Speaker 3: trusting them and them trusting me, and we'd be able
- 11:22Speaker 3: to collaborate on that and just for me to go
- 11:24Speaker 3: out there and have a stellar year.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Pitton, how are you using last season this field to
- 11:28Speaker 1: make this year your best yet?
- 11:30Speaker 2: Kind of like he said, you know, I'm excited to
- 11:34Speaker 2: be out there every snap with him. Uh when you
- 11:36Speaker 2: watch him play at the end of the game, you
- 11:38Speaker 2: see he's sometimes he's got blood on him, his chim
- 11:40Speaker 2: strap's all messed up, and it's just because he's trying
- 11:42Speaker 2: so hard. He's out there every play and he's given everything.
- 11:44Speaker 2: So I just want to, you know, get to that
- 11:46Speaker 2: point every single game, not not two games in the
- 11:49Speaker 2: one game I'm doing this or that. You know, I
- 11:50Speaker 2: wanna be out there with him every game and just
- 11:52Speaker 2: I'm super excited for for PG and his schematics and
- 11:55Speaker 2: you know the way that he's trusting his players and
- 11:58Speaker 2: just letting us go play. I'm super excited for this year.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I think it's gonna be a good one.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Just Finally we say good crack, good fun in Ireland. Red,
- 12:05Speaker 1: who's the best crack? The best fun in the locker room?
- 12:07Speaker 1: If you had a name, one guy age and you
- 12:08Speaker 1: can't name each other?
- 12:09Speaker 2: If you if you can, if you want, I'll go first.
- 12:11Speaker 2: I think Christian Kuntz. Yeah, Christian Kuntz is he's quite
- 12:15Speaker 2: We've got a lot of characters, actually we do.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Man, Oh no, that's tough.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I'll tell you what we'll do. I'll ask him pars
- 12:23Speaker 1: that's dead, and we'll see the crack. We'll see the
- 12:25Speaker 1: crack man, lads. Even though we came off the field
- 12:27Speaker 1: and done this. So we're both obviously very very appreciative,
- 12:29Speaker 1: fans appreciative, but like, let's just take this chance to
- 12:31Speaker 1: wish you the very very best luck this season, and
- 12:34Speaker 1: before you know, we'll all be having a little rendezvous
- 12:36Speaker 1: in France at the end of October. Thank you both
- 12:38Speaker 1: very much for joining us.
