- 3:33Speaker 4: Now Captain Carey USA, starring Charlton Heston as Webcarey and
- 3:39Speaker 4: Wanda Hendrix as Julia. In northern Italy, there's an ancient landmark,
- 3:53Speaker 4: a palace built on an island surrounded by.
- 3:56Speaker 3: A beautiful lake. It's the Palazzo Decretion.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Over the centuries, it's been the scene of good and evil,
- 4:03Speaker 4: of romance and despair. In nineteen forty four, when Nazi
- 4:11Speaker 4: troops were in the village of Belmonte, the castle was
- 4:15Speaker 4: occupied by an old countess and her granddaughter, Julia. Beneath
- 4:19Speaker 4: the castle, in a forgotten wine cellar, was the headquarters
- 4:23Speaker 4: of two American officers, members of the OSS. It'd been
- 4:28Speaker 4: operating out of there for months, organizing the Italian partisans,
- 4:33Speaker 4: but one night they were portrayed and their work ended
- 4:37Speaker 4: in a burst of German rifle fire. It's a long
- 4:47Speaker 4: way from the palazzo to a shop window in New York,
- 4:51Speaker 4: but this is the real beginning of our story. When
- 4:54Speaker 4: Webcarey and a girl paused to look at.
- 4:56Speaker 5: Some paintings, come along, web Father is.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Waiting for it. Please, let'sy, it's the painting I've seen
- 5:04Speaker 3: that before.
- 5:05Speaker 5: Really I had a long talk last night with father.
- 5:09Speaker 5: I told him that I was in love with you
- 5:11Speaker 5: and you were.
- 5:12Speaker 6: He said he felt the same way about mother after
- 5:14Speaker 6: he came back from his war.
- 5:16Speaker 5: And what you need is a job.
- 5:18Speaker 7: Oh, Nancy, I want to speak to someone about that penny.
- 5:22Speaker 5: Oh very well, dear, let's go in.
- 5:25Speaker 8: Yes, sir, about that penning in the window, the Palazza
- 5:28Speaker 8: de CRESSI. I see, you know Italian history, the more
- 5:31Speaker 8: recent Italian history.
- 5:32Speaker 9: How we've been very fortunate. The Italian government doesn't usually
- 5:35Speaker 9: allow treasures like this to.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Leave the country.
- 5:37Speaker 5: It's lovely, isn't it?
- 5:38Speaker 9: An outstanding work by billion him?
- 5:40Speaker 3: Madame?
- 5:40Speaker 9: In Blinnese time, the decresis where the ruling family in
- 5:43Speaker 9: northern Italy? Last week we refused an offer of thirty
- 5:46Speaker 9: thousand dollars from a museum thirty thousand?
- 5:49Speaker 3: Where did you get this penny.
- 5:51Speaker 9: Through our agent?
- 5:51Speaker 3: Sir?
- 5:52Speaker 9: In Switzerland?
- 5:53Speaker 3: Where did they get it? Forgive me?
- 5:55Speaker 9: But are you an accredited art leader?
- 5:57Speaker 3: No?
- 5:58Speaker 9: Well then I'm sorry, sir. I'm I'm able to give
- 6:00Speaker 9: you any further information.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Well, I don't understand. Why are you so interested?
- 6:05Speaker 8: Because two people died, a man and a girl, and
- 6:07Speaker 8: I spent three years in a hospital. And because you
- 6:11Speaker 8: won't have to worry about me getting a job, I've
- 6:13Speaker 8: got one now in Italy. What kind of a job
- 6:15Speaker 8: finding the man who saw this painting?
- 6:18Speaker 3: But why because I'm going to kill him?
- 6:28Speaker 10: Luigi Luigian, don't you remember me? I remember, Signora Cano.
- 6:35Speaker 10: You have come back.
- 6:36Speaker 3: You don't seem overjoyed to see me. You were once.
- 6:39Speaker 10: Many things in our village have a change since the war.
- 6:42Speaker 8: Your you ever just arrived? Yes, the bus from Alana.
- 6:46Speaker 8: It was the same back there in the plazas. Somebody
- 6:48Speaker 8: recognized me and all the people disappeared.
- 6:51Speaker 3: I mind my business.
- 6:53Speaker 8: I'm glad I found you here at the lake. I
- 6:55Speaker 8: want you to row me over to the island the Palazza.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Get in the boat.
- 6:59Speaker 11: Christ she's not even surprised to see me. It does
- 7:03Speaker 11: not matter. Signor get in the boat.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Come in, Senor if you want to. Said you wanted
- 7:20Speaker 3: to see the head of the house to talk about
- 7:23Speaker 3: a painting. I'm sorry, palazzo is not open to tourists.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I'm not a tourist. My name's Webster Kerry. I am
- 7:29Speaker 3: Carlo de Creeshchi.
- 7:31Speaker 8: You don't look like like her, Your sister Julia in here, please,
- 7:38Speaker 8: my grandmother will see you.
- 7:40Speaker 5: This is the man who asked about the painting.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Signor Kerrie Nona, good afternoon, pending by Bolina Contests. This
- 7:48Speaker 3: is a photograph of it.
- 7:51Speaker 5: Remarkable.
- 7:52Speaker 12: It is our island, this island, but as it was.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Many years ago.
- 7:58Speaker 3: You're familiar with the painting, Contesse, you've seen it before.
- 8:01Speaker 5: No, mister Kerey, why should I have?
- 8:04Speaker 8: Because it's one of a half dozen paintings that Major
- 8:07Speaker 8: Williams and I discovered, and your granddaughter, Contessa Julia. We
- 8:12Speaker 8: came across them one night while we were trying to
- 8:14Speaker 8: find a place to hide her equipment.
- 8:16Speaker 12: Oh so you are one of the Americans who hid here.
- 8:20Speaker 12: It was quite a shock to learn that our home
- 8:22Speaker 12: was being used as your headquarters.
- 8:24Speaker 8: When did you find out we were hiding in your
- 8:26Speaker 8: cellar's Contessa.
- 8:28Speaker 12: After the Germans came, of course? But what has all
- 8:31Speaker 12: this to do with the painting peace?
- 8:33Speaker 3: No one knew about the existence of that hiding.
- 8:35Speaker 8: Place except the three of us, Julia, the Major and
- 8:38Speaker 8: me and the man who betrayed us to the Nazis.
- 8:41Speaker 8: Julia's dead, so's the Major, and all I've got to
- 8:44Speaker 8: go on. Is that the man who smuggled the painting
- 8:46Speaker 8: out of the country is the man who betrayed us.
- 8:48Speaker 3: I'm going to find him.
- 8:50Speaker 5: Why Why?
- 8:51Speaker 3: Because Julia would be alive.
- 8:52Speaker 12: Julia is alive, mister Kerrey, alive through those doors you
- 8:57Speaker 12: find her out on the terran.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Julia, I can't believe it. I can't believe it. Wis
- 9:08Speaker 3: what's the matter? Are you're glad to see me?
- 9:12Speaker 13: This is it? This is my husband, Baron de Griffy.
- 9:18Speaker 14: I think I understand, darling. You will leave us for
- 9:20Speaker 14: a few moments.
- 9:20Speaker 13: Please, no, no, no, I think I should.
- 9:22Speaker 14: I will explain to mister Carey. Now, please do as
- 9:25Speaker 14: I said. Julia away, signor you wish to embarrass my wife. No,
- 9:30Speaker 14: of course, not sit down, mister Carey. I know your
- 9:33Speaker 14: name because Julia's brother told me you were calling Signor.
- 9:37Speaker 14: I know how she once felt about you. She has
- 9:39Speaker 14: told me herself many times, the romance of a young
- 9:42Speaker 14: girl swept off her feet by the heroic American secret
- 9:45Speaker 14: hiding places, the meetings at midnight, or she laughs about it,
- 9:49Speaker 14: never to say anything more. Please don't blame Julia. You
- 9:52Speaker 14: understand that she You are leaving Signor.
- 9:56Speaker 5: About the painting.
- 9:57Speaker 12: Mister Kerey, you say it is very What are we
- 10:01Speaker 12: to do when.
- 10:02Speaker 3: You lose something you thought was valuable? I don't know.
- 10:05Speaker 8: Contestant bleed a little and forget. I suppose mister.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Cary, please, I'm afraid I have offended.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Hey, Copeca or Momento.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Oh it is you a Lazarus reason from the dead.
- 10:21Speaker 11: Hah oh, I might the first to greet you on
- 10:24Speaker 11: the limit of the partisans. Ah, you look good, baby,
- 10:29Speaker 11: Come we walk out together.
- 10:30Speaker 3: I'm leaving too, professional call or what one of the servants.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Fascinating case group?
- 10:37Speaker 11: Now tell me? How can you possibly be alive? They
- 10:39Speaker 11: kill you down there?
- 10:40Speaker 3: No? No, not quite. They decided I was worth keeping alive.
- 10:44Speaker 3: They thought i'd talked. Maybe I would have. Then our
- 10:47Speaker 3: paratroops captured their hospital training. Who you?
- 10:50Speaker 11: Oh, I arranged more easily. I was in Milana when
- 10:53Speaker 11: the raid came. I just stayed there. What are you
- 10:56Speaker 11: doing now?
- 10:57Speaker 2: You're married?
- 10:57Speaker 3: What brings you back here?
- 10:59Speaker 8: I'm a civil engine with no job, and I'm not married,
- 11:02Speaker 8: and I don't know exactly what did bring me back?
- 11:06Speaker 3: Was it to find the trader? That was the general idea?
- 11:10Speaker 11: Hey, captain as a doctor, let me tell you, Liessa,
- 11:14Speaker 11: vengeance cures nothing, nothing. Now, how do you get back
- 11:20Speaker 11: to the village.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Luigi is waiting for me, he wrote me over.
- 11:23Speaker 11: I must stay on the island for a while. I
- 11:24Speaker 11: have other calls to make. I'll see you later most certainly,
- 11:28Speaker 11: my friend. Hey, listen to me. Some American girl will
- 11:31Speaker 11: mend your heart. You will become married, and I have
- 11:34Speaker 11: twenty children. The night, maybe I stop at the hotel.
- 11:38Speaker 11: We drink some wine.
- 11:38Speaker 15: Uh yeah, sure, you did not have visited the palazzo
- 11:52Speaker 15: for long, Senor Luigi, tell me something, village.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Why did the people go away when they saw me?
- 11:59Speaker 10: You brought death, one say, or you might bring it again.
- 12:03Speaker 10: After the raid, the Germans searched the village. They take men,
- 12:07Speaker 10: twenty seven men. They lined them up and killed them.
- 12:11Speaker 3: They said, we helped you betrayed this Luig.
- 12:15Speaker 10: Everybody in the village knows his name. My son, my son, Mario.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Mario Maria didn't know where we were. The people do
- 12:22Speaker 3: not believe him. They drive him through the streets. They
- 12:25Speaker 3: beat him to death for seven days. They let him
- 12:27Speaker 3: hanging from a tree. Why did they think he was guilty?
- 12:30Speaker 10: Because the night before the raid, Mario brought a message
- 12:33Speaker 10: to one of the German.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Officers, from whom from the betrayer senior? Who was it
- 12:37Speaker 3: who gave him the message?
- 12:38Speaker 10: They do not let my son talk.
- 12:40Speaker 3: You must help me. You must have found who sent
- 12:44Speaker 3: the message. Please send your help me help her name
- 12:47Speaker 3: Marion knew now his death. You did not talk like
- 12:51Speaker 3: this before. It's nothing I can do.
- 12:53Speaker 10: Mario is there, yes, But his wife and child said,
- 12:56Speaker 10: you know who gave you food.
- 12:57Speaker 3: At the farm. And the boy Pietro, Pietro.
- 13:00Speaker 10: Is bigger now than your Pietro, the son.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Of the traitor who gave Mario the message. Piece. I
- 13:08Speaker 3: don't know, but there is much I can tell you.
- 13:11Speaker 3: It doesn't matter now, Luigi, not to me. Take me
- 13:15Speaker 3: back to the village.
- 13:27Speaker 16: The room is ready in your anytime you wish to
- 13:29Speaker 16: go up the stairs.
- 13:30Speaker 8: Thanks are under grafy. That's what Luigi Julia said, isn't it?
- 13:36Speaker 14: That is correct?
- 13:38Speaker 3: May I please have a word with you? Thank you?
- 13:42Speaker 14: Being back here again must be quite exciting for you,
- 13:45Speaker 14: meeting all your old friends, many of them are dead.
- 13:48Speaker 14: I spent most of the war in Switzerland diplomatic service.
- 13:51Speaker 14: I couldn't join you here in the fight. You were privileged.
- 13:54Speaker 3: I was drafted. It was an interesting story you told
- 13:58Speaker 3: us before. I'm glad you're liked it.
- 14:00Speaker 14: But the crecy had nothing to do with the sale
- 14:02Speaker 14: of the painting. I assured you. Julia told us about
- 14:05Speaker 14: those forgotten rooms in the cellar, but when we returned
- 14:08Speaker 14: after the war, they were empty. This is the first
- 14:11Speaker 14: we've heard of the value of the paintings. Of course,
- 14:13Speaker 14: we'd like to recover them.
- 14:14Speaker 8: I'm not stopping him, but they don't interest me anymore.
- 14:17Speaker 8: And if you and if and if you want the truth,
- 14:21Speaker 8: I have no interest in this town, or the palazzo
- 14:24Speaker 8: or the people in it, including your wife.
- 14:26Speaker 3: That's what you really want to hear, isn't it.
- 14:29Speaker 14: War does different things to different people. You it has heard.
- 14:33Speaker 14: But it has given me a chance to be happy.
- 14:35Speaker 14: How easily it might have been the other way. Let's
- 14:37Speaker 14: just blame it on the Germans. Now, if you'll excuse
- 14:40Speaker 14: me better than I'm going up. Well, I just left
- 14:52Speaker 14: your husband. I don't think he'd approved. I wanted to
- 14:56Speaker 14: leave without seeing you again. He there's a bus back
- 15:00Speaker 14: to Milana the night. Don't tell me you want me
- 15:02Speaker 14: to stay.
- 15:02Speaker 13: No, no, I want you to leave. But as a friend.
- 15:05Speaker 13: That's why I came here. And there are so many questions.
- 15:09Speaker 8: Questions. Yeah, there's one I'd like to ask. When I
- 15:13Speaker 8: can't answer, Are you happy?
- 15:16Speaker 13: I'm trying.
- 15:17Speaker 8: That's a good answer. I'll do the same, I promise,
- 15:20Speaker 8: I'll try as hard as I can.
- 15:22Speaker 5: Oh wait, why did you come back?
- 15:23Speaker 8: Because I thought you were dead? Because the one who
- 15:25Speaker 8: betrayed this might be alive. Maybe it was seeing the
- 15:28Speaker 8: painting of the island. It made me lonesomeer. Maybe I
- 15:31Speaker 8: like Sandro's spaghetti. You take your pick better?
- 15:33Speaker 13: Can we even talk with?
- 15:34Speaker 3: What do you want from me? A wedding present?
- 15:36Speaker 13: All I want is that you try to understand? Is
- 15:38Speaker 13: that asking too much? The night of the raid, the
- 15:41Speaker 13: last thing I remember was you on the floor when
- 15:44Speaker 13: I woke up. I was in a concentration camp with
- 15:46Speaker 13: my grandmother. We were there for months and I kept
- 15:48Speaker 13: asking for you day and night, and she told me
- 15:51Speaker 13: you were dead. I wouldn't believe her, And then one
- 15:54Speaker 13: day they let us go and we made our way
- 15:56Speaker 13: into Switzerland.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Good for you.
- 15:58Speaker 5: Rocco was there.
- 16:00Speaker 13: I've known him ever since I was a little girl.
- 16:01Speaker 13: He used to visit us during the war. Grandmother had
- 16:04Speaker 13: always wanted me to marry him.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Simple, so you did no, no.
- 16:08Speaker 13: No nothing. I had the crazy hope i'd hear from you.
- 16:12Speaker 13: And then when we came home after the war, I
- 16:16Speaker 13: found this in the cellar, the medal of Saint Christopher.
- 16:19Speaker 13: I'd give them to you, and then I knew.
- 16:22Speaker 5: You were dead.
- 16:23Speaker 3: May I have that back?
- 16:25Speaker 13: I was hoping you want.
- 16:27Speaker 3: It, that little cross I gave you here. You're still worried.
- 16:34Speaker 8: Yes, If anyone asks me where I got this medal,
- 16:39Speaker 8: I'll say from a friend, a friend.
- 16:41Speaker 3: Who died in the war.
- 16:43Speaker 17: You can say the same. Okay, okay, peace, It's wonderful, goodbye, goodbye.
- 17:05Speaker 16: Well, come come quickly. You told me the bus was
- 17:09Speaker 16: not the busses Senor Luigi. Luigi is dead with a knife,
- 17:19Speaker 16: don't you.
- 17:19Speaker 9: Doctor LENARTI, what can you tell us about the police commissioner?
- 17:22Speaker 3: I tell you all I know. They called me to
- 17:25Speaker 3: the hotel. When I told you, who called you? I
- 17:27Speaker 3: did this in your I did, that's right.
- 17:30Speaker 8: I told Sundra to get doctor Lenardi as quickly as
- 17:32Speaker 8: he could.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Continue. Doctor the poor fellow was dead when I got there.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Apparently he started up the stairs. Someone was waiting for him.
- 17:39Speaker 3: In the landing. I have the weapon here, oh ss
- 17:43Speaker 3: knife from the war. That's right, we all had these knives, Commissioner.
- 17:49Speaker 3: I used the mind to prune the trees until I
- 17:51Speaker 3: lost it. Well, nothing more I can do, not for now, doctor,
- 17:55Speaker 3: Thank you. Sandra g you saw Luigi come into your hotel.
- 18:00Speaker 16: Where I'm at the desk. He comes to me. He
- 18:03Speaker 16: asked for the American? Who ever saw him?
- 18:05Speaker 3: Who else? Who else?
- 18:07Speaker 16: He Giovanni Lucci?
- 18:10Speaker 3: Who knows your Dandi from the plaza? Signor they servant
- 18:13Speaker 3: They come every day to the village for the male.
- 18:16Speaker 16: I'm checking my account, but I can't see everybody. Maybe
- 18:19Speaker 16: the Baroni was there also, Signor Barone. I don't know
- 18:22Speaker 16: for sure.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Who else?
- 18:23Speaker 16: Andre, well, the baroness. She came into the courtyard. She
- 18:31Speaker 16: also wanted to talk to Senior.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Carry she left before it happened. Senor, why did Luigi
- 18:37Speaker 3: come to see you? Well? Do you know? No, No,
- 18:41Speaker 3: I don't know, and.
- 18:42Speaker 9: Until we find out, I must ask you to remain
- 18:44Speaker 9: here in the village.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Don't worry, commission and nothing could drive me away.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Now we'll continue with that too, of Captain Carey USA
- 19:05Speaker 2: in a few moments. Now here's Libby Collins with a lux.
- 19:08Speaker 6: Movie news hi Ken Tonight's picture is a thriller, diller

- 19:21Speaker 2: Isn't Randa the owner of a banana plantation in this picture, Libby?

- 22:04Speaker 3: I recognized it belong to Frank Major Williams.
- 22:08Speaker 8: So whoever found the painting also found the knife. The
- 22:11Speaker 8: betrayer and Luigi's killer are the same. All right, suppose
- 22:14Speaker 8: you're right how you find it. Luigi's inspected somebody Luich
- 22:17Speaker 8: is dead. His son's wife is Sarah Finish. He must
- 22:20Speaker 8: know something.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Maybe, don't be foolish. If she knew, she would have
- 22:22Speaker 3: shouted from the rooftops long ago. Now take my advice,
- 22:26Speaker 3: leave the past alone.
- 22:28Speaker 8: This afternoon Luigi said there were twenty seven dead men
- 22:31Speaker 8: demanding justice when I killed his son.
- 22:33Speaker 3: That made twenty eight. Now it's twenty nine.
- 22:35Speaker 11: Be careful, sweetheart, lest it become thirty. Huh, there's such
- 22:48Speaker 11: an Honor's such a great time. I please to be
- 22:50Speaker 11: seeing saying, okay, we'll be done.
- 22:51Speaker 2: At once morning morning, mister key.

- 23:02Speaker 3: Oh, she's cold.
- 23:03Speaker 16: Day is such an hon It's such a pleasure.
- 23:07Speaker 12: I have come, among other things, to apologize. I was
- 23:11Speaker 12: told that last night, after you had been questioned by
- 23:14Speaker 12: the police, some of the people of this village attacked you.
- 23:17Speaker 3: Yes, after doctor Lenardi left it. It didn't last long.
- 23:21Speaker 12: You were insulted, you were stoned in a sense. I
- 23:25Speaker 12: am the head of the village, so I beg you
- 23:27Speaker 12: to accept my apologies.
- 23:29Speaker 5: They could not have realized what they were doing.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Just a reminder to me that I'm not very popular
- 23:34Speaker 3: around here.
- 23:35Speaker 5: They believe you bring bad luck. But you won't be
- 23:39Speaker 5: molested anymore.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Do you mean because I'm living here? Partly?
- 23:43Speaker 12: That partly because I'm living Not yet, mister Kerry Julia
- 23:52Speaker 12: was very young when you fell in love with her.
- 23:55Speaker 12: Young girls form romantic attachments very quickly. Now she's grown
- 24:01Speaker 12: up and happily married.
- 24:03Speaker 3: I'm sure of it.
- 24:04Speaker 12: Baron de Graffi has the most distinguished political career before him.
- 24:08Speaker 12: The marriage binds two houses of strength and merit. This
- 24:13Speaker 12: is the proper arrangement of things, a sort of mathematical equation.
- 24:21Speaker 5: I realized that isn't so. Perhaps in America.
- 24:26Speaker 3: As is a little more chemical. Girl picks her.
- 24:29Speaker 5: Own husband by experiment.
- 24:33Speaker 18: Mister Kerry, I wish you good luck and a pleasant trip.
- 24:53Speaker 3: I want you for the last time we get up.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Don't you recognize with the captain the American? I know
- 24:58Speaker 3: who you are.
- 24:58Speaker 2: I want to tell your dog that lay up, put
- 25:00Speaker 2: down your rife.
- 25:02Speaker 19: Yo, Now, Luigi.
- 25:08Speaker 8: Murderers all sure, come to sunny Italy and have the
- 25:11Speaker 8: time of your life.
- 25:12Speaker 3: What do you want. It's a long walk to the
- 25:14Speaker 3: farm here. I don't want to leave till I've talked
- 25:16Speaker 3: to you.
- 25:17Speaker 2: I have nothing to talk.
- 25:18Speaker 8: I'm your friend, Sarafino. I was Maria's friend, and I
- 25:21Speaker 8: don't believe he was guilty. Please trust me.
- 25:23Speaker 2: I trust no one go.
- 25:25Speaker 19: I turned the dog loose again.
- 25:26Speaker 8: Okay, when your boy, when Pietro asks why he grew
- 25:29Speaker 8: up a trader's son, you'd tell him you wouldn't talk
- 25:31Speaker 8: to an American.
- 25:34Speaker 19: Perfactly, Capitana. Please, I am sorry.
- 25:38Speaker 3: It's all right, I understand.
- 25:41Speaker 19: Come and we talk on the posture. For years, they
- 25:46Speaker 19: treat us like criminals, Pietro and me. When I sent
- 25:50Speaker 19: him to school, he comes home covered with blood. The
- 25:55Speaker 19: other children hit him with stones. Now Luigi is dead.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Friendly, I'm still here, Serina.
- 26:03Speaker 19: What can you do?
- 26:04Speaker 8: Luigi was killed because he came to the hotel to
- 26:07Speaker 8: tell me something.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Do you know what it was? I do not know.
- 26:09Speaker 8: Did he ever say anything about a painting?
- 26:12Speaker 3: I think hard.
- 26:13Speaker 8: It's very important. They say Mario delivered a message to
- 26:16Speaker 8: a fascist office.
- 26:17Speaker 19: They lie Mario hated the FASCISTI he was not a traitor.
- 26:20Speaker 8: I know that the one who gave him the message
- 26:22Speaker 8: was the trader who was Mario with before he left, Sandro.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Doctor Lenardi, one of the Partisans. You've got to remember.
- 26:29Speaker 2: I do not know.
- 26:30Speaker 3: Miss You've had years to think about this. You must
- 26:33Speaker 3: suspect someone, someone in the village. No one in the village,
- 26:36Speaker 3: in the palazzo. Don't be afraid. You don't tell me.
- 26:40Speaker 3: I can't help you.
- 26:41Speaker 19: There's someone at the gate.
- 26:43Speaker 3: I keep that dog quite. How did you know I
- 26:49Speaker 3: was here.
- 26:51Speaker 13: I wanted to hear what Serafina had to tell you.
- 26:53Speaker 2: I say nothing, not to her.
- 26:55Speaker 8: You can trust Julias. She believes Mario was innocent. Remember
- 26:59Speaker 8: she was betrayed to Sisty.
- 27:01Speaker 6: Everyone in palazzo.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Look, I know you've suffered more than anyone else.
- 27:04Speaker 8: But Julie and her family suffered too. They were in
- 27:07Speaker 8: a concentration camp.
- 27:08Speaker 19: But they get out. They were not touched. And I
- 27:10Speaker 19: tell you why. Because of the brother Carlo. We were
- 27:14Speaker 19: here fighting. He was in Germany.
- 27:16Speaker 13: You do not believe, then ask her, yes, it is true.
- 27:19Speaker 13: Carlo was in Germany, a German prisoner condemned to death.
- 27:22Speaker 5: Do they kill him?
- 27:24Speaker 9: No?
- 27:25Speaker 19: Others they kill, not you and your family. You are
- 27:28Speaker 19: back in the palazzo.
- 27:29Speaker 3: You are rich, finer. Way weren't all killed? You're alive?
- 27:32Speaker 3: So am I? And all this cuss And why.
- 27:34Speaker 19: Do the FASCISTI and people from the black market come
- 27:36Speaker 19: to the palazzo in secret and night?
- 27:37Speaker 5: That's not true.
- 27:38Speaker 19: Last month I see a man Luigi ro across.
- 27:40Speaker 3: The lake in his Basque.
- 27:41Speaker 5: I don't know what she's talking.
- 27:42Speaker 3: What about the man.
- 27:43Speaker 19: Luigi said from Milano? He stayed at the Alberto the hotel,
- 27:46Speaker 19: same as you remember what there was. I remember it
- 27:50Speaker 19: was day after Pietro's birthday, the last day of June, the.
- 27:54Speaker 3: Last day of jew That seems to mean something to you.
- 27:57Speaker 13: Yes, yes, that night. No, no, my grandmother had one
- 28:01Speaker 13: of her attacks and we were all up until dawn.
- 28:03Speaker 13: It had been a visitor. I would have seen him.
- 28:05Speaker 3: How long did he stay at the palazza, Lui?
- 28:07Speaker 6: Did you say?
- 28:08Speaker 20: One?
- 28:08Speaker 19: How when he comes back he carries something, a bundle of.
- 28:12Speaker 3: What did he look like?
- 28:13Speaker 19: I come to the village for Luis. He has to
- 28:15Speaker 19: see the man get out of the boat, and not
- 28:17Speaker 19: to see his face.
- 28:17Speaker 3: I had one more question, Sarafina. Did he wear shoes? Shoes?
- 28:22Speaker 13: That's a strange question.
- 28:23Speaker 3: The village there's a blind man, Marco.
- 28:25Speaker 5: Did he played music and bag pop?
- 28:27Speaker 3: Yes?
- 28:28Speaker 13: During the war he helped to sew his music. Used
- 28:30Speaker 13: to warn us.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Maybe he was warning me again this morning. He told
- 28:34Speaker 3: me to ask Sarafina about a man with bare feet.
- 28:37Speaker 19: A man with a Luigi shoes.
- 28:41Speaker 3: I do not look. I'll go back to the village.
- 28:44Speaker 3: I'm very grateful to you.
- 28:45Speaker 19: Oh what can I do?
- 28:47Speaker 3: Nothing, I'll be back again.
- 28:55Speaker 13: I have a car out there.
- 28:57Speaker 3: Thanks. So, your brother was in prison. I didn't know
- 29:01Speaker 3: that it's.
- 29:01Speaker 13: Not true what Teaffine had told you. I won't have
- 29:03Speaker 13: you suspecting me or my family.
- 29:05Speaker 3: Maybe I can find the truth in.
- 29:06Speaker 13: Milano, and I'll go to Milano with you.
- 29:08Speaker 3: That's fine. I'm sure your husband will like that.
- 29:11Speaker 13: He'd like it even less if he knew that people
- 29:12Speaker 13: are suspecting us of entertaining men from the black market
- 29:15Speaker 13: or as trade.
- 29:16Speaker 3: Do you know him better than I do? But you're
- 29:17Speaker 3: not going with me.
- 29:18Speaker 13: I'm more involved in all of this than you are.
- 29:21Speaker 13: If you won't let me help you, then I'll do
- 29:22Speaker 13: what I can by.
- 29:23Speaker 8: Myself, all right, Then go back to the island and
- 29:25Speaker 8: make some excuse meantime, I'll try to find out who
- 29:28Speaker 8: stayed at Sandra's hotel in the thirtieth of June.
- 29:31Speaker 3: Pick me up there when you're read.
- 29:44Speaker 13: Well, are you ready to tell me?
- 29:47Speaker 3: Tell you what?
- 29:48Speaker 6: Well?
- 29:48Speaker 13: Something must have happened when I went to the hotel
- 29:50Speaker 13: to pick you up. Sandra was very upset. He said,
- 29:52Speaker 13: I'd find you back at Seraphine's.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Again, I took you out of your way. I'm sorry
- 29:56Speaker 3: what happened. There was a detective at the hotel.
- 30:00Speaker 8: Seems his job was to make sure I didn't leave
- 30:02Speaker 8: without him, so I left through the window.
- 30:04Speaker 13: Was very foolish.
- 30:05Speaker 8: Made a purchase from Sundra too. Is guest list of

- 30:21Speaker 3: I haven't taken a ballad yet. True Serafina doesn't make sense.
- 30:26Speaker 3: She doesn't know yet.
- 30:28Speaker 13: Thank you?
- 30:29Speaker 3: What are you smiling at?
- 30:32Speaker 13: I was just thinking, how much like old times.
- 30:36Speaker 3: You'd better talk about the weather, betterness and get us
- 30:39Speaker 3: to Milano. Well, any luck, nothing sick stop we've made
- 30:53Speaker 3: so far. They've all said they were just seeing the sights.
- 30:56Speaker 3: Strangely enough, they all seem to be telling the truth,
- 30:58Speaker 3: and they all wore shoes.
- 31:00Speaker 13: Well, you're just wasting time. Everyone in the village knows
- 31:03Speaker 13: the blind man a little crazy. And how do you
- 31:05Speaker 13: know that Serafina hasn't dreamed all this about a man
- 31:08Speaker 13: from Milano.
- 31:08Speaker 8: Because she doesn't sleep that well anymore? We'll soon find out.

- 32:20Speaker 21: Oh but this is not true, Signora. Who tells you
- 32:23Speaker 21: these things?
- 32:23Speaker 22: Mr?
- 32:23Speaker 3: True friend?
- 32:24Speaker 8: He seemed to have had a similar problem with a
- 32:26Speaker 8: Bellini in the village of Belmonte.
- 32:29Speaker 21: Belle Monty. I'm afraid I'm not even acquainted with anyone
- 32:32Speaker 21: in belmont.
- 32:32Speaker 3: If you've just forgotten you met him at the palazzo
- 32:35Speaker 3: in June thirtieth.
- 32:36Speaker 21: June thirtieth, Belmonte. Ah, yes, yes, of course I tried
- 32:41Speaker 21: to get an engagement for the festival, but I was
- 32:43Speaker 21: not at the palazza that night.
- 32:44Speaker 8: He just said night. How did you know it was night?
- 32:46Speaker 8: I didn't say so. Where are your shoes at Curto?
- 32:49Speaker 8: Don't you like shoes?

- 33:15Speaker 3: You are police now I'm not police, secuto. But it's
- 33:17Speaker 3: not a bad idea. Excuse me, I'll use your phone.
- 33:20Speaker 21: No, no, no, wait, Senora, please, you are making a
- 33:21Speaker 21: big mistake. I do not kill anybody. I'm not a murderer.
- 33:26Speaker 21: I smuggled the paintings, yes, but I did not steal it.
- 33:29Speaker 3: Can't prove that you didn't prove But I.

- 35:38Speaker 3: Time ago I left some oss knives there. They're gone now,
- 35:42Speaker 3: along with the paintings, so they tell me. But if
- 35:44Speaker 3: the rest of the paintings is still there, then someone's lying.
- 35:47Speaker 3: Right down the line. Someone is lying. But who you guess, Lenadi.
- 35:52Speaker 3: I'll wait and.
- 35:53Speaker 23: See now, would someone mind telling me what this is
- 36:09Speaker 23: all about?
- 36:10Speaker 14: Police officers, guns, flashlights.
- 36:13Speaker 3: Only the griff.
- 36:13Speaker 9: You you will forgive us, please? We see you here
- 36:16Speaker 9: at the lake. We did not recognize you in the da.
- 36:19Speaker 14: I was about to drive the launch back to the island.
- 36:21Speaker 14: But if something is wrong, snor allow me. Baroni de Graffi.
- 36:25Speaker 9: This is Lieutenant CHRISTOLDI of the Milano Police and Signor
- 36:28Speaker 9: Simonds from the American Consulate in Milano.
- 36:32Speaker 24: We're looking for a compatriot of mine, Baroney, who seems
- 36:35Speaker 24: to have gotten into trouble.
- 36:36Speaker 14: The compatriot not Senor Carey.
- 36:39Speaker 9: Yes, you have heard of the death of the boatman
- 36:42Speaker 9: Luigi tragedy Commissioner, so we play Senor carry on the surveillance.
- 36:47Speaker 9: It was as much for his own protection, so he disappeared.
- 36:52Speaker 9: Lieutenant CHRISTOLDI can't tell you the rest.
- 36:55Speaker 22: This afternoon, Signor Milano, a man named Akuto is murdered.
- 37:00Speaker 22: A man named Chellini telephoned the police. He claimed that
- 37:02Speaker 22: Senoracuto had two strangers in his office, a man and
- 37:06Speaker 22: a woman. The man is an American of the same
- 37:09Speaker 22: description as Webster care I.
- 37:12Speaker 24: Still say that does mean a thing. Lieutenant Webster Carey
- 37:15Speaker 24: was planning anything as monstrous as this is highly unlikely
- 37:19Speaker 24: would have called on me first.
- 37:21Speaker 9: He he called on you, yes, yes, at the councilor
- 37:25Speaker 9: a few days ago. He wanted some information regarding the
- 37:29Speaker 9: export of painting.
- 37:30Speaker 14: Forgive me, Signori. But I still don't understand why you
- 37:33Speaker 14: think that he will have.
- 37:34Speaker 22: Two excellent reasons for wanting him Broonic, One because he
- 37:37Speaker 22: has disappeared, and two because shortly after the murder of Signoracuto,
- 37:42Speaker 22: I received a telephone call. He would not give his name,
- 37:46Speaker 22: but he said, the man who killed Lakuto is a webster.
- 37:48Speaker 24: Carry your mysterious informant easily could be the murderer himself,
- 37:53Speaker 24: trying to throw you off the track.
- 37:54Speaker 22: You can't be sure, Signori, there will be an arrest
- 37:57Speaker 22: without definite proof and evidence.
- 38:00Speaker 14: Signor Carrey was of great help to her people during
- 38:03Speaker 14: the war.
- 38:03Speaker 3: We do not question that, Baroni.
- 38:05Speaker 14: Therefore, I am most reluctant to say what I am
- 38:08Speaker 14: now compelled to say.
- 38:10Speaker 3: You've seen him? Where where is he? Surely not to
- 38:14Speaker 3: pilot no no.
- 38:15Speaker 14: I passed him on the road outside the village, perhaps
- 38:18Speaker 14: twenty minutes ago. The road tought the border. I tried
- 38:21Speaker 14: to call to him, but he was in too much
- 38:23Speaker 14: of a hurry. He was driving Alancha Caliphorna.
- 38:26Speaker 9: Where the nearest quickly, I will show you a part
- 38:28Speaker 9: of the Swiss border sixty kilometers.
- 38:29Speaker 3: We still have a chance.
- 38:35Speaker 14: You can come out of the launch signor they are
- 38:37Speaker 14: gone next for the help.
- 38:38Speaker 3: I've been running ever since I saw the police in
- 38:41Speaker 3: front of the hotel.
- 38:42Speaker 14: Where you're safe for the moment. The roads are full
- 38:44Speaker 14: of lanches, all going fast. Italians like to speed. Why
- 38:49Speaker 14: did you lie to them?
- 38:51Speaker 3: You should be a great success.
- 38:52Speaker 14: In Pallet experer. Let us understand each other, mister Carey. Personally,
- 38:57Speaker 14: I have no objection to your going to prison, but
- 39:00Speaker 14: I cannot afford to have my wife involved in a murder.
- 39:03Speaker 3: Where do you get your information an.
- 39:05Speaker 14: Unimpeachable thought signor from Julia herself. We all talked things
- 39:11Speaker 14: over when she returned this afternoon, and we decided that
- 39:14Speaker 14: you should get out of Italy as fast as you can.
- 39:17Speaker 3: I am here to see that you do notice sending
- 39:20Speaker 3: voice in a family circle.
- 39:22Speaker 8: Not not that I'm ungrateful, Baroni, but I don't like
- 39:25Speaker 8: being pushed around by you, your family, the police, or
- 39:27Speaker 8: anybody else. And I don't like people to let innocent
- 39:30Speaker 8: men take the blame for the crimes they've committed. So
- 39:33Speaker 8: thanks again for your help, But I'm going to stick around.
- 39:35Speaker 3: At bother people, can of bother people till I find
- 39:38Speaker 3: the man who turned us in, And.
- 39:40Speaker 8: Having found him, then would you leave? Then I'll set
- 39:43Speaker 8: a speed record. You know a lot of answers, Baroni.
- 39:46Speaker 8: Maybe you can help me. I don't know who killed Luigi.
- 39:50Speaker 8: I certainly would not know who killed this man Acuto,
- 39:53Speaker 8: but I do know who told the Germans that night
- 39:56Speaker 8: in nineteen forty four. And I also knowe that Julia
- 40:02Speaker 8: is the last person in the world you would heart Julia.
- 40:06Speaker 8: Julia betrayed his Anna. No that that one I can't
- 40:09Speaker 8: accept it is true, and she'll.
- 40:11Speaker 3: Have to tell me so herself.
- 40:13Speaker 14: She will senor get back in the launch. You can
- 40:16Speaker 14: ask Julia yourself, Amina.
- 40:25Speaker 13: Amina Pietro, Oh, I could beat you.
- 40:28Speaker 6: Why you come home so late.
- 40:29Speaker 3: I hear them talking.
- 40:30Speaker 13: Momina at the lake.
- 40:31Speaker 12: I heard him, the baron and the American, the one
- 40:34Speaker 12: who was here talking.
- 40:35Speaker 5: The baron told him Amina the name of the trader.
- 40:38Speaker 13: The Baronessa, Julia betrayed.
- 40:41Speaker 3: To the Germans, Pietro. If you lie as I'm the.
- 40:44Speaker 12: Son of my father, Mari, who I swear it, Julia,
- 40:48Speaker 12: the baron.
- 40:48Speaker 19: Said, so come, we go to the village, the police,
- 40:52Speaker 19: to the Battersians those who are left.
- 40:54Speaker 25: Then we crossed the lake and killed the trader before
- 41:12Speaker 25: we bring you back. Three of Captain carry Usa. Here's
- 41:15Speaker 25: Irving Cummings with tonight's guest, Paramount's lovely Starlett Catherine Grandstaff.
- 41:20Speaker 3: Hello Catherine.
- 41:21Speaker 4: What's happening at Paramount these days?
- 41:23Speaker 26: Well, for one thing, everybody's still laughing at the sides
- 41:26Speaker 26: splitting attics of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis in that
- 41:29Speaker 26: wonderful Hal Wallace comedy The Stooge. That's the very funny
- 41:32Speaker 26: picture which, besides Dean and Jerry, stars Mary and Marshall,
- 41:36Speaker 26: Eddie Mayhoff and Polly Bergen.
- 41:37Speaker 4: I understand that, besides their usual hilarious routines, Dean and
- 41:41Speaker 4: Jerry have some moments of very serious drama.
- 41:43Speaker 26: That's right, it's a great story of the happiness and
- 41:46Speaker 26: heartbreaks of show business. Of course, Dean sings several hit
- 41:50Speaker 26: songs in his customary smooth manner, and not to be outdone,
- 41:53Speaker 26: Jerry too sings several songs in his not so smooth manner.
- 41:57Speaker 3: Well.
- 41:57Speaker 4: Besides music and laughs, I know the Student Hug has

- 43:50Speaker 4: the plaza Sheriffina has told them the new name of
- 43:53Speaker 4: the traitor. Meanwhile, Webb and the baron have returned to
- 43:57Speaker 4: the palazza. You remember Carlo, mister Kerey, Julia's brother.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Good evening, sorning your sister. Where is she?
- 44:08Speaker 14: I will tell Julia that you're here. Carlo, well, Giovanni,
- 44:14Speaker 14: I'm not sure where he is. If you should see him,
- 44:16Speaker 14: tell him to put the lunch in the boathouse. Now
- 44:19Speaker 14: get a drink from mister.
- 44:20Speaker 9: Carey, won't you see down?
- 44:23Speaker 3: Thanks? What saw the mister case? It doesn't matter whatever
- 44:26Speaker 3: is handing Carlo who's Giovanni is a valet signor my
- 44:30Speaker 3: brother in law?
- 44:31Speaker 14: Seventy?
- 44:32Speaker 3: Now, if you excuse me, I get your drink.
- 44:36Speaker 14: Where is she? Giovanni? The baronessa a pastairs with the
- 44:39Speaker 14: old woman. You want to I'll get her myself. Go
- 44:43Speaker 14: down to the cellar Giovanni.
- 44:44Speaker 21: So Ala just tell me to put the lungeoy.
- 44:47Speaker 14: And I tell you to go down to the cellar.
- 44:49Speaker 3: Carlos.

- 44:51Speaker 14: Then you know what has to be done. There will
- 44:54Speaker 14: be no travel signor I'll come down.
- 44:57Speaker 3: With him later. Something wrong, grand Mother? The contess is
- 45:04Speaker 3: not ill again. I told you it's nothing. It's very obvious.
- 45:07Speaker 3: Why don't you get it off your chest? This much?
- 45:10Speaker 3: I can't tell you it will be here any moment.
- 45:12Speaker 3: Just do whatever Julia ask.
- 45:14Speaker 6: You to do.
- 45:14Speaker 3: You'll have to tell me more than that. I cannot.
- 45:16Speaker 3: I will not.
- 45:17Speaker 8: Besides, too late, do you mean, mister Carey?
- 45:21Speaker 12: We will talk in here, Julia.
- 45:24Speaker 14: We can forget the amenities, Julia. Mister Carey is very
- 45:27Speaker 14: anxious to get to the point.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Julia.
- 45:29Speaker 8: Your husband wants me to believe that I'm sure the
- 45:32Speaker 8: one who told the Germans the one who betrayed it.
- 45:35Speaker 14: I it's a very simple answer, he wants, Julia, you'll
- 45:40Speaker 14: say yes.
- 45:41Speaker 3: What do you say? No? Yes, I don't believe it.
- 45:46Speaker 5: You must because it's true.
- 45:47Speaker 14: Why would you betray The police may be here at any minute.
- 45:50Speaker 3: To tell him.
- 45:51Speaker 13: A few nights before the raidar I told you I
- 45:54Speaker 13: had to go to Milan. Or do you remember you
- 45:55Speaker 13: told me.
- 45:56Speaker 3: You were going to get medicine for the contests.
- 45:57Speaker 13: Yes, but I lied. We was still a German prisoner.
- 46:01Speaker 13: I heard that he was going to be executed. I
- 46:04Speaker 13: went to Elano to pick for Carlo's life. The Nazis
- 46:07Speaker 13: agreed to let him go if I would tell him
- 46:09Speaker 13: where the Oas says for hiding you and Major Williams.
- 46:12Speaker 14: He had no choice, mister Carey, none whatsoever out of it.
- 46:16Speaker 3: Go on, Julia, go on.
- 46:18Speaker 5: What more you have to know, mister Kerey, There is
- 46:20Speaker 5: nothing else.
- 46:21Speaker 13: Do what you think is right, but go away. I
- 46:23Speaker 13: tig of you.
- 46:23Speaker 14: Go away if you will allow me, mister Carey, there
- 46:26Speaker 14: is one more particular. Julia sent a letter to a
- 46:29Speaker 14: prominent fascist asking him to arrange a meeting with the
- 46:32Speaker 14: German commandant. Mario delivered it.
- 46:36Speaker 3: Now, will you go yes, now I'll go.
- 46:39Speaker 14: You have a gun, mister Kerey, I did have, but
- 46:42Speaker 14: I threw it away.
- 46:43Speaker 8: You were very wise eleven't have explaining to do without
- 46:46Speaker 8: accounting for a gun.
- 46:48Speaker 3: It's too late the window. Look there are a dozen boths.
- 46:51Speaker 14: The police already, or perhaps you are ready to talk
- 46:53Speaker 14: to them.
- 46:53Speaker 3: No, not yet. Then I'll take you through the cellar.
- 46:56Speaker 3: This way is innor I know the way.
- 47:10Speaker 14: The light is rather dimmed down here. Be careful, mister carey.
- 47:13Speaker 14: This place has a lot of memories, Baronet. If you
- 47:16Speaker 14: keep walking down the passage, you will get out through
- 47:18Speaker 14: the greenhouse.
- 47:19Speaker 3: I have another boat on the other side of the island.
- 47:21Speaker 3: Wait a minute.
- 47:21Speaker 8: At door, Yeah, that's where they killed him. Had you
- 47:25Speaker 8: Williams right at the door, we'd found the painting. At
- 47:27Speaker 8: a hurry, I'd like to go in and take another look.
- 47:30Speaker 8: I wouldn't waste any time, mister. Call only be a minute.
- 47:33Speaker 8: Delay may be fatal.
- 47:34Speaker 3: This is where I spent six months of my life.
- 47:37Speaker 3: I'd like to refresh my memory. There are a candle
- 47:39Speaker 3: in here, I believe, so.
- 47:41Speaker 8: Come in, Baroney, and that you said this room was empty.
- 47:46Speaker 8: The other paintings they're still here, and the supplies we stowed.
- 47:49Speaker 8: We were going to give this equipment to the partisan.
- 47:51Speaker 3: If you're through reminiscing, yes, I'm through, and I know
- 47:55Speaker 3: now why Julia was lying. She lied to protect you.
- 47:58Speaker 14: No, mister Carey, Julia was trying to get you to leave,
- 48:01Speaker 14: to save your life. She knows that if you found
- 48:05Speaker 14: your betrayer, I would be left with no alternative. I
- 48:09Speaker 14: would be forced to kill you, just as you killed
- 48:12Speaker 14: Luigi and Nakuta, as Giovanni killed Luigi and Akuto. I
- 48:15Speaker 14: merely supervised.
- 48:16Speaker 3: So you're the betrayed. How did you know about a
- 48:19Speaker 3: hiding place?
- 48:20Speaker 14: I didn't, mister care But Julia's grandmother did. When the
- 48:24Speaker 14: Contessa learned that Carlo was to be executed, she sent
- 48:28Speaker 14: for me. I contacted the Nazis. The arrangements were simple,
- 48:32Speaker 14: a single letter, innocently delivered by Mario, trading your hiding
- 48:36Speaker 14: place for Carlo's life.
- 48:38Speaker 3: You see, he is the last of the depression. You
- 48:42Speaker 3: smuggled up that painting of the island.
- 48:44Speaker 14: It was very helpful in financing my career. Naturally, I
- 48:48Speaker 14: cannot let my illegal sale of paintings and my former
- 48:50Speaker 14: connection with the Nazis become known. It would mean the
- 48:53Speaker 14: end of everything. I am sure you can understand my position. Giovanni.
- 48:59Speaker 3: He will not live here.
- 49:00Speaker 27: But I'm a contest. I tell you it's not the police.
- 49:15Speaker 27: Is the people of the village.
- 49:17Speaker 5: What do they wish to Tolu Nati?
- 49:19Speaker 13: I think I know they come for me, Julia.
- 49:22Speaker 3: No, not in the name of all the saints. Sorry,
- 49:24Speaker 3: don't stand here. Go on through the cellar.
- 49:26Speaker 5: Go through the cellar with the doctor.
- 49:29Speaker 12: Julia.
- 49:29Speaker 3: Sorry, they're breaking the door down.
- 49:31Speaker 21: I'll stay here with no stop.
- 49:38Speaker 3: I come on you to.
- 49:39Speaker 24: Tap you, disgrace the dead.
- 49:43Speaker 12: They ask you for justice, not for revenge.
- 49:45Speaker 20: I tell you that Julia is not guilty of this thing.
- 49:49Speaker 21: Husband plays Get out of the way, said the house.
- 49:52Speaker 28: She must be here, cap down, captain, if you're in
- 50:03Speaker 28: the cellar, opened the door, Captain, it's Julia.
- 50:06Speaker 3: They want Julia web Web opened the door. It's our
- 50:11Speaker 3: only chance.
- 50:21Speaker 8: I got barons, Grenadesia, the hand grenades.
- 50:26Speaker 3: They were still there where we'd left them.
- 50:31Speaker 6: They stopped.
- 50:32Speaker 13: They want to kill you.
- 50:33Speaker 3: There we are.
- 50:37Speaker 2: He must pay.
- 50:38Speaker 3: He must find anything. The trail is dead. You have
- 50:42Speaker 3: to found about on it.
- 50:43Speaker 6: He said.
- 50:44Speaker 3: She was guilty. The barony lied to me to protect himself.
- 50:48Speaker 3: He had Luigi murdered and the man in Malana. Wee
- 50:50Speaker 3: can fist.
- 50:51Speaker 13: Then we will find them.
- 50:53Speaker 3: Where is he?
- 50:53Speaker 7: He'll find them down there in the passage the griffy Engeva.
- 51:04Speaker 7: I had no choice, Julia, Giovanni was waiting for me.
- 51:07Speaker 7: He'd sent him down here to kill me. I've told
- 51:15Speaker 7: you the truth, Seraphine.
- 51:17Speaker 19: Mario's memory is cleared.
- 51:21Speaker 2: Pietro will never be called cret A son again.
- 51:23Speaker 3: Pietro's father was a patriot. Tell them to go home.
- 51:27Speaker 3: The dead can sleep in peace. Now.
- 51:29Speaker 19: Grat, grat.
- 51:36Speaker 9: You grat.
- 51:42Speaker 3: Julia. Come upstairs, Lenadi, get word to the police. Tell
- 51:52Speaker 3: them I'm here. You'll be here soon enough. I saw
- 51:56Speaker 3: the lights of their boats on the lake.
- 51:58Speaker 13: I was told everything to say when I came back
- 52:01Speaker 13: from Milano. My husband is okay.
- 52:04Speaker 5: There is something I want to say.
- 52:07Speaker 3: Doesn't matter our contestion. The baronet told me about.
- 52:10Speaker 5: You this time. He did not lie.
- 52:15Speaker 3: Your punishment is living with yourself.
- 52:18Speaker 12: It won't be for long here, doctor, do nothing will
- 52:22Speaker 12: confirm that.
- 52:24Speaker 5: What did you tell me doctor? One month too?
- 52:28Speaker 13: Perhaps, card Look, come, I I have no right to
- 52:35Speaker 13: ask for anything with or even forgiveness.
- 52:39Speaker 3: What will you do now, I'm not sure. First I've
- 52:43Speaker 3: got to square myself with the police. That may take
- 52:45Speaker 3: a while. Then I'm going home. I want you to
- 52:49Speaker 3: take this Julia.
- 52:54Speaker 5: The middle of Saint Christo, but I'll come.
- 52:57Speaker 3: Back when you send it to me. Don't make it
- 53:00Speaker 3: too long.
- 53:20Speaker 4: In a moment as stars who return. Now Here is
- 53:23Speaker 4: ken coppenter.

- 53:28Speaker 2: mouth than any other danifice, And now here is proof
- 53:32Speaker 2: that chlorodent gives you a healthier mouth too. In the
- 53:35Speaker 2: interest of child health, chlorodent was tested under the supervision
- 53:39Speaker 2: of dentists at Father Flanagan's famous Boys Town. In this research,
- 53:44Speaker 2: chlorodent and a fine white toothpaste were used regularly by
- 53:48Speaker 2: different groups of youngsters, and in just sixty days, dentists
- 53:52Speaker 2: found that three fourths of the boys using chlorodent showed
- 53:56Speaker 2: dramatic improvement in mouth health. Chlorodent was proved twice as
- 54:01Speaker 2: effective as the fine white toothpaste for quickly reducing a

- 54:56Speaker 4: Yeah, just like Charlton, who also likes to keep his
- 54:59Speaker 4: hand in all phases.
- 55:00Speaker 5: Well, I know.

- 55:09Speaker 4: Halla's responsible for bringing some splindor talent to the screen.
- 55:13Speaker 4: For his latest production, come Back Little Sheepa, he chose
- 55:16Speaker 4: Shirley Booth right from the stage play.
- 55:18Speaker 8: Well, of course, Shirley had already won seven awards for
- 55:21Speaker 8: his stage Betrayal, and now she's won three more for

- 55:56Speaker 8: secret until Wednesday, because next week's players a very special event.

- 1:00:44Speaker 13: This is Andrew J.
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: Graham, author of the web surface series Oh and A
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: Man of His Wife.
- 1:00:49Speaker 21: You're listening to the great Detectives of Old Time Radio.
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, this is one case where I think
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: that the radio version beat the film version. The first
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: time we played Captain Carrey as a special back at
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: our seven hundred special, I had not had the opportunity
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: to see the film. However, since that time the film
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: became available on Netflix. It's no longer available. It's now
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: made its way onto DVD and you can also rent
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: the film from Amazon Instant Video if you're curious. But
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: I felt the audio version was better just because it
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: really it really slimmed down the story, and I think
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: that the chemistry between Heston and Hendrix was better than
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: that between lad and Hendrix. The Oscar winning element was
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: the song Mona Lisa. It became a standard It was
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: well known for being sung by Nat King Cole, and
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: it was introduced in this mode implausibly enough as a
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: signal song for spies. Apparently when you thought the fascist
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: were coming, you'd go out. I believe it was Mario
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: in the movie. They actually did flashback to nineteen forty
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: four in the movie, and you do the nineteen forty
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: four settings and show it to us as opposed to
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: hear where we start directly into the nineteen fifties postwar era,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: and it really does create the sense of mystery. And
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: I have to admit to being partial to Charlton Heston's voice,
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: such an amazing voice and such a great acting talent.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: I have seen no Wayne's World, never watched the movie
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: or the sketch, but on a search I found a
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: scene from Wayne's World to featuring Charlton Aston. And in
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: that scene, they had a mechanic at a service station
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: who they were running in to ask directions for and Wayne,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: you know, the guy did the scene and Wayne said,
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: I'm sorry but and I know this is only a
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: small part, but can we get somebody a bit better
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: than this? And they brought in Charlton Heston, who took
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: that small part and did an extremely good, emotional, powerful,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: evocative scene which itself was a bit funny, but also
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: brought home the point of how much he brought to
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: every single role he took on, and such a beautiful voice.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: It's a shame that his career really didn't allow him
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: the opportunity that the great stars of earlier of earlier
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: eras had to really sink their teeth into radio. But
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: as they mentioned, television was already very big for him,
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: and so any sort of audio work would be voiceovers
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: and occasional animated character, but there was a lot of
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: audio drama that he could have done. It's magnificent to
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: hear him in this role and just such presence, even
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: this early in his career. And I did actually almost
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: I got within I think about ten feet of him
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: when he was out in my hometown of Callispell, as
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: Maxwell Smart said, missed him by that much. Really a
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: shame I didn't get to meet him at any rate.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: A wonderful and poignant film in this radio version does
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: a really good job of capturing the emotional core of
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: the story. So I hope you enjoyed it as much
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: as audio, or if not, that you enjoyed it half
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: as much as Idio. I think even if you only
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: enjoyed it half as much, it was such a great
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: program that you'd get that it would be well worth
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: listening to at that rate. All right, Well, we returned
