- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on? Everybody? It
- 0:15is Jeff Moser and Adam Kaplan and the Eagles are
- 0:18in the midst of trimming their roster down to fifty three.
- 0:21They have to be at fifty three today at four o'clock.
- 0:25In fact, while you're listening to this podcast, depending on
- 0:29what time you listen to it, you could they could be,
- 0:31you know, trimming GoF guys that we don't discuss. But
- 0:34they did make a bunch of cuts over the weekend
- 0:36into Monday as they got the process started at him
- 0:39and we're going to discuss a few of the significant ones.
- 0:42And I have to raise my hand. I have to
- 0:44say I'm guilty. We had our fifty three man roster
- 0:47projection pod with you, myself and Andrew. I kept Kyle
- 0:51McCord on. I didn't think Howie was going to waive
- 0:55a quarterback that he drafted in the sixth round. I
- 0:58was wrong, but credit to him. He didn't keep a
- 1:00player on the roster just because he drafted him, which
- 1:04we have seen him and other gms do in the past.
- 1:07But he is no longer with the team.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's it. I mean, it was one of
- 1:11those did he deserve to be on the roster of
- 1:13The answer was no, he just didn't perform like he
- 1:15did some good things in OTAs. Then he saw the
- 1:18lack of arm strength. It really showed up in training camp.
- 1:22There were a number of throws where wow, that it
- 1:24did come out well, and you know, if he doesn't
- 1:27see it quickly and get out of his hands quickly
- 1:29because he's a timing based quarterback, it just doesn't look right.
- 1:32And not only training camp, but the preseason it just
- 1:35didn't go well for him. Now we'll see. If he's
- 1:38not claimed, you would think that at least they'd want
- 1:41him back in the practice squad work with him. But
- 1:44let's put it this way, if he's not claiming, he's
- 1:46not back in the practice squad, it tells you that
- 1:50they really didn't want him back. So we'll see what happened.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Yeah. One thing that made me think that that might
- 1:55not happen is because I would think they would also
- 1:58want dtr during Rompson Robinson, who is also waived. I
- 2:03would think that they want him on the practice squad
- 2:06because generally you would like a third quarterback, one that's
- 2:10on your practice squad to run your scout team. When
- 2:13you have to play against guys like Jane Daniels or
- 2:16Kyler Murray or Josh Allen, guys who could run around
- 2:19and have good athleticism and throw the ball. And DTR
- 2:22has a good arm. I mean they didn't have a
- 2:24great preseason either, but he can obviously move around the
- 2:27pocket and he can throw the ball. So if they
- 2:31want that for their scout team, that means they would
- 2:33have to have DTR and Kyle McCord back. And as
- 2:37we've talked about this before, yeah, you have enough spots
- 2:39on your scout team, but it's hard to have four
- 2:41quarterbacks because it means somebody's not getting a lot of reps.
- 2:44I mean, they're just basically in your building getting mental
- 2:47reps because you don't have enough. You barely have enough
- 2:50of your backup quarterback to have.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Remember though, they did trade for Sam how So samhow
- 2:54in a sense can handle that because.
- 2:57Speaker 1: You've got and I didn't think of him that way,
- 2:58but he does move around.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Well, yeah, he's prett good. Yeh, he's pretty good athletes.
- 3:01So he got hurts. He got the mkey issue with
- 3:03this finger. They're questioned about whether it would be week
- 3:06two as we understand a week three, week four, no
- 3:09plan says of now to put him an IR, So
- 3:11they're going to be holding for now. Three spots for
- 3:15quarterbacks hurts McKee and hell, but still I could certainly
- 3:21see them having a fourth quarterback in the practice squad.
- 3:23They don't need five, but fourth, you could see a fourth.
- 3:26Do you like to have a developmental guy? That's what
- 3:28that would be all about.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Yeah, So I think every situation, to your point, is
- 3:33on the table. Now. With Howell being a guy who
- 3:35can run around and simulate, you could have just three quarterbacks,
- 3:41all of them being the three that they're gonna have
- 3:43on the active for Also, you could have four bringing
- 3:45one of them back to the practice squad that you waved,
- 3:47or you could have five, which would be I think
- 3:49the least likely of the scenario. But yeah, well if
- 3:52they want both back. But yeah, I think every single
- 3:54scenario was on the table.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Yeah. Four, Yeah, I don't five won't happen.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Four?
- 3:59Speaker 2: Yes, So yeah, dtr Man, you'd see it every once
- 4:04in a while. Boy the ball would come out much
- 4:05better than the cord, but he'd be in decisive in
- 4:09ac accuracy issues. So yeah, it just didn't work. It
- 4:14wouldn't surprise me if the Raiders claimed him, you know,
- 4:18just because of the Chip Kelly situation where Chip coached
- 4:22him in college. So we'll see what happens. But boy,
- 4:24that boy Kenny Pickett being traded. Kenny Pickett is former
- 4:28EGO quarterbacks. He continues to move on. Now he's with
- 4:32the Raiders.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Go West, young man going West and West. Yeah, what
- 4:37a career for him. So I'm just gonna put a
- 4:42ball in the quarterback situation like this. I don't know
- 4:44that this any of this happens if Tanner McKee had
- 4:48been completely healthy. As far as the Owl trade, I
- 4:51think it's it's it's it's a weird timing, but we'll see.
- 4:54It's not that McKee is expected to be out very long,
- 4:57but you they obviously felt that they needed somebody to
- 5:00be available week one and maybe week two if Jalen
- 5:03Hurts were to get hurt, and that somebody could not
- 5:05be McCord or dtru. So the question I'll always have
- 5:10is if McKee had stayed healthy, would McCord have made
- 5:15it as the number three quarterback onto the role over
- 5:18they have traded for Sam Howell. Anyway, I don't know
- 5:21it's hard to imagine. Again, Howell only has one year
- 5:24left on his deal, so it's not like he gets
- 5:26to slide into that number two job next year if
- 5:28they trade Tanner McKee. So it's just an interesting question
- 5:32that I'll always wonder. But it does give the Eagles
- 5:36some death. But actually, you know, pretending, I guess, depending
- 5:39on how the season goes at him, this is an
- 5:42unlikely scenario. But if Howell has to play and plays
- 5:46decently for a little bit, I mean, maybe he's a
- 5:48trade chip at the deadline. I don't know.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Oh, oh gets hurt. Mckey's unavailable. Hey, look remember what
- 5:54happened with A. J. Feeley. Yeah it was a third
- 5:57string quarterback and you just never know. But no, the
- 6:00big thing here, though, the real story here is that
- 6:02they get him into the building. He'll sees how things
- 6:05are done. Leagles could trade McKee in March. That's realistic
- 6:09if the team's will to pay big and he's really
- 6:12liked by a lot of people in the league. So
- 6:16before you get to free agency in March, you let
- 6:19him know, Hey, we'd like to have you back. If
- 6:21we move Tanner, there's an opportunity to keep you as
- 6:24our back up before you decide where you want to go.
- 6:27You let him know that he's liked, and now you
- 6:29have him in the building, you see how he is,
- 6:31his approach, and you see what his performance is like
- 6:34in practice.
- 6:35Speaker 1: That's definitely fair, definitely all right. So that's the quarterback situation.

- 7:15of extra great bonus content. You've got to be a
- 7:18member though Patreon dot com Slash Inside the Birds. So
- 7:23the offensive line is seemingly taking shape at least as
- 7:27far as the game day active offensive lives, and the
- 7:29Eagles trade to bring back Fred Johnson. He is now
- 7:32going to be your swing tackle. They trade Darien Canard,
- 7:36who have been practicing at guard and can play some tackle,
- 7:39but that obviously leaves Matt Pryor for that spot first
- 7:44man up at guard. But again, Adam, I think that
- 7:47this is a position that right now you would say
- 7:50the top three off the bench of Fred Johnson, Matt Pryor,
- 7:53and Drew Kendall. But this is a position that by
- 7:56the time we do our next podcast wouldn't be surprised
- 7:58if there was another name or a move how he
- 8:01made there. I like Drew Kendall. I don't know that
- 8:03he wants a rookie guard center to be active on
- 8:06game day as opposed to somebody who might have some
- 8:08experience a lot of.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Time pack here. So yeah, a couple of things. So
- 8:12Prior will be the backup right tackle and the backup
- 8:14right guard, and then Fred Johnson, who can play right
- 8:18tackles better off the left, will be the left backup
- 8:21left tackle. So right now, and look, let's face it,
- 8:24Matt Prior did not get very much work at left guard.
- 8:26They did it late in camp. Other teams have told
- 8:29us that they're looking for a backup interior lineman, not
- 8:32a lot I mean you're talking. It could be by
- 8:34the way, it could be someone who's cut a veteran.
- 8:36They're not looking to spend money. It's just depth. But
- 8:39the issue then becomes though, and this is something to
- 8:43watch once Dickerson going to be ready. The first injury
- 8:45report is out this coming Monday for the game on
- 8:48Thursday against Dallas. He's going to work or not work?
- 8:50Will he be ready? His breath Toast's still going to
- 8:52be the roster, His breath Toath's going to be the
- 8:54backup there. There are a lot of questions to be
- 8:55answered and all revolves around landon Dickerson, his availability and
- 8:59who's going to be back up.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right, I mean, even if there's not a
- 9:04move made, I think the same rule applies from Kendall.
- 9:06To Tooth has not played a whole lot in the NFL,
- 9:09and in his NFL experience, I believe he's played tackle,
- 9:13not guard. Remember he came in against the Ravens for
- 9:16his first his debut a couple of years ago, was
- 9:19in twenty twenty, and he started it right. He played
- 9:21at right tackle. I'd have to go back and check,
- 9:23but he just doesn't. I don't, I can't imagine Howie
- 9:26and just Outlin feel comfortable with Tooth being that number
- 9:30three guy or Drew Kendall. I think they would just
- 9:33want another Like last year, the headicates they never used him,
- 9:36but it's almost like they had him just in case.
- 9:39All right. Sure now they can still slide Dickerson over
- 9:42to center if there's an injury to Jurgens, but I'm
- 9:44not sure they want to do that again. I think
- 9:46they'll have to at this point as long as Dickerson
- 9:48is healthy. They're right now.
- 9:49Speaker 2: I know Trevor Kagan is still in the roster. He's
- 9:51got he's a ways away, he's a left guard, he's
- 9:54he's I don't see that being possible even if they
- 9:58even if they keep him, this is kind of obvious
- 10:03that they have to. If Brett Hoff is on the
- 10:05roster and we'll be the backup left guard, you'd like
- 10:09to have more experience at left guard. That which is
- 10:11what you're saying here. You really want someone who's done it,
- 10:13been there, done before. That's why when we look at
- 10:16the veterans were cut coming up later today and Wednesday also,
- 10:19there'll be some more cuts on Wednesday. That's not yes,
- 10:22you have to be at fifty three and more than
- 10:23fifty three, but there'll be some more maneuverability, as Chip
- 10:26Kelly used to talk about the roster maneuvers.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that's why we called it the initial fifty three.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Not yeah, yeah, fifty three. It's never said other than
- 10:35at four pm initially. Then Wednesday will be more moved,
- 10:39all right.
- 10:40Speaker 1: The last position that I'm really curious to see for
- 10:43this podcast how it develops his tight end because the
- 10:45Eagles waived e J Jenkins. I did. I did not
- 10:48have e J. Jenkins on my fifty three, either you
- 10:51or Andrew Andrew did.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I think Andrew did. Yes, he was actually the one
- 10:54who reported it that it was released.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I know it must have been like darn, but I
- 10:59fell all along. And we'll see what happens that. If
- 11:02you're not going to keep EJ. Jenkins, you're probably just
- 11:04going to keep two tight ends because there's a redundancy
- 11:08with Kylin grants into what cal Katara gives you as
- 11:11far as being a pass catcher not a blocker. So
- 11:14as as as of the time of us recording this,
- 11:16he has not been uh waived yet.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Kylin grantson have contract terminate just real quick.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, he's he's a vet.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah's when you're doing he's vested.
- 11:27Speaker 1: That's right, that's right. So so for that, say regard,
- 11:32it wouldn't surprise me if both guys were back in
- 11:33the practice squad. I guess there's still a shot that
- 11:36Grantson Sticks is the number three, but they clearly don't
- 11:38have a blocking tight end outside of great cal Katara.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Even if he's not, Yeah, god, it would is the
- 11:44would be the y Yeah, so uh calculter the f
- 11:47feet So yeah, that's a problem. So basically, yeah, I agree,
- 11:52like they're going to have to if jackins, I'd be
- 11:55shocked if Jenkins, if he clears Waivers, is not back
- 11:57on the Eagles. The only way wouldn't be is another team,
- 11:59so them, because what happens is good agents will find out, Okay,
- 12:04is there a bigger role in mind for my guy
- 12:06potential with another team?
- 12:08Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 12:08Speaker 2: That's the only reason why I wouldn't. I mean, you
- 12:10have Nick Muse and Cameron Lattu also for the practice squad,
- 12:14assuming they're not on the team. That'd be shocking if
- 12:16they were on the team. But Kylin Grantson one way
- 12:19or the other on the sixty nine man roster fifty
- 12:21three plus sixteen and then it's seventy with the international player.
- 12:25I don't I'd be very surprised Ifkylin Granson isn't on
- 12:28this team for one way or the other.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Yeah, one way the other. I agree. I just think
- 12:32it makes more sense to keep too and try to
- 12:35get them on your practice slog.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I hear what. Yeah, they need a they
- 12:40need a back, They need a block and Teddy in
- 12:42the worst way that that's that's again where you maybe
- 12:44you find a veteran if they don't get Jenkins back
- 12:47because you don't have the three elevations one way or
- 12:51the other, they gotta find they got to get someone
- 12:53who can block.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I agree, Yeah, yeah, I gotta find out what happened
- 12:55to our their old friend Jack Stole he was with
- 12:57the Saints right still as far as all right, well,
- 13:01you know that's a name that they've used in the past.
- 13:03But yeah, we'll see. I do agree with you. I
- 13:04think after the cutdowns there might be some names that
- 13:07we have to take a look at. All right, what
- 13:11any other moves that you think, you know, we talked
- 13:13about the offensive line. Definitely have to have your alert
- 13:18up for a move there. How about Edge, I would
- 13:20think edge has still got to be a position.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Oh big big again. Death has nothing to do with
- 13:25how many players you have. It's how the quality of
- 13:27the player that the performance is just not good enough there,
- 13:30o Ja Luri. Other than the second preseason game where
- 13:33he showed up a little bit, just haven't seen it
- 13:35from him. I know he's making a lot of money.
- 13:37Usha quickness, He's got the quickness that you look for.
- 13:44It's just yeah, I expect him on the roster. Pow Ryland, Yeah,
- 13:48he showed up a little bit in the last preseason game,
- 13:49but he's not good enough yet. And Patrick Johnson mister
- 13:52training camp, but he's the fourth or fifth edge. And
- 13:54Obo Concer would be good for the practice squad outside
- 13:57chance he makes it. They're just not good enough there.
- 14:00And you Hunt has not developed yet. I know much.
- 14:03They love him. He's been a good story. He's not
- 14:04there yet as a pass rusher. There's a good pass rusher,
- 14:09but he's kind of like the one that that again,
- 14:11they you can have twenty guys. If you only have
- 14:13one of two guy who could rush the pastor you're
- 14:14not good enough now. Campbell obviously at some point could
- 14:18help you with on the edge, but he's an inside backer.
- 14:20Right now, Let's do.
- 14:22Speaker 1: A hypothetical here, just to see how the numbers game
- 14:24would work. I know Chip Kelly would hate this because
- 14:26it's a hypothetical.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Hypothetically hate that.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Yeah, but let's hypothetically say the Eagles listen to this
- 14:31podcast and they're like, you're right, we don't have enough
- 14:33of the edge. Let's go sign to Davian Clowney. Okay,
- 14:36he's out there. He's a good situational pass rusher. He
- 14:39could come in do what we ask him to do.
- 14:41If they did that, who would go? Because, as you mentioned,
- 14:45Ojelari is making a pretty good coin to just all
- 14:47of a sudden discard, right it was a he signed
- 14:50for more than Newstay did, so.
- 14:52Speaker 2: He did much more. He's the guarant the full guarantee
- 14:54on his contract of the total cash of three million. Yeah,
- 14:57I know it's not a lot. Know it's not a lot.
- 15:00But how he doesn't typically walk away from guys he
- 15:03I mean he has. He did show hit some left,
- 15:06but he wasn't. Clearly he was not nearly as good
- 15:08as probably people thought he should be. But Clowney see
- 15:12the thing we mentioned this one Clowney in the spring.
- 15:16Eagle's gonna want Hunt up to to to play. Now,
- 15:21Greco sells totals repeatedly. He's not. He's really his deal
- 15:24size and versatility. You could play him inside nickel, you
- 15:28could line him up as an edge rusher as well.
- 15:31But he's not a high end pass rusher. He's just not.
- 15:33He's never has been. That's that's the real story. It's
- 15:35apite all the hype. Now he did the Panthers wanted.
- 15:39They want to go with younger players, and their past
- 15:41rusher is not very good. That's a little it's a
- 15:43little bit. You gotta have your radar up when when
- 15:44a team like that releases a guy like Clowney. But
- 15:48it'd be a fine signing, but you have to understand
- 15:50he's really not going to solve your past rush issue.
- 15:52That's the reality of it. There's a lot of he
- 15:54supposed to but hasn't done it.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I just wonder who would it mean an
- 16:00unemployment for because it feels like is locked in just
- 16:03on the salary alone.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Based on history, how he keeps these guys. But I
- 16:10see ushi on the roster. Patrick Johnson could be a
- 16:13practice squad maneuver. You know, you just you talk to
- 16:16the agent. You say, here's where we're at, Powell Ryland.
- 16:19If somehow he survives here, he's just not going to play.
- 16:21He just there's no room for him. O. Shawn Matthews
- 16:23is there, but it'd be more of a practical guys,
- 16:25so you could you could take your pick. I mean,
- 16:28it's none of them really have shown that they're ready
- 16:32at to be that guy who could give him the
- 16:35explosives off the bench that like teams watch his tape
- 16:40and thought there was still something left, no question about it. Uh.
- 16:43Mynors thing was that the Panthers were in on him
- 16:45and addiction to the Eagles if there was another team.
- 16:48But the bottom line is, uh that we didn't see
- 16:50it in train camp. That's the reality of it.
- 16:52Speaker 1: I do think I could be wrong about this, but
- 16:54he strikes me as sort of the I told you
- 16:57listen a text the other day. I'm back in the
- 16:58baseball card type guy where by the end of the
- 17:01year he's gonna wind up having his typical numbers. You know,
- 17:04he's gonna wind up up having his seven sacks to
- 17:07eight nine sacks. Pressures he's gonna miss a few games
- 17:10from injury. I'm still sort of skeptical on what OUCH
- 17:15can do, to be honest with you. So that's why
- 17:17it's kind of interesting to see if they do decide
- 17:20to upgrade at the edge, which guy, if any of
- 17:22them did they just keep all, you know, a five
- 17:25man rotation with another one added in. I don't know.
- 17:28It'll be really interesting to say, but I wouldn't be
- 17:31surprised if there's a move there made.
- 17:33Speaker 2: I'd be stunned if they don't add somebody by week two,
- 17:38if not this week. The reason I say week two
- 17:40is because you for guys, for veterans who have not
- 17:43who have not got termination pay, you know, they you'd
- 17:45have to you have to guarantee the salary week one
- 17:48if they're on it right now. We see that for
- 17:50decades now that club's wait. So they don't want to
- 17:52guarantee salary. See that. But I'd be stunned. And with
- 17:56the next couple of weeks at an edge now, one
- 17:58thing I would add cornerback is all watch for me personally,
- 18:01I don't see them being done, but it always depends
- 18:06who's available at what cost? Is it?
- 18:11Speaker 1: Yes?
- 18:12Speaker 2: Right now? It would be dry Jackson starting week one
- 18:15right now, he would be the week one starter opposite Mitchell.
- 18:18But they're not. They're just not good enough there. How
- 18:20he's won and what makes him great at his job.
- 18:22He's tireless, he's he's a he doesn't really maybe four
- 18:28or five years ago he'd be unrealistic with Okay, let's
- 18:31just wait this thing out. I don't see that if
- 18:33the right opportunity happens now. Also, from what other teams
- 18:36are telling us, they're not looking to take on big salary.
- 18:38That's been very clear from other clubs. Yep, which is
- 18:41what we reported in March. They're they're on a cash
- 18:44budget organizationally, and that's still held true. Now, you never
- 18:48sayed ever with Howie whatever, you can't it totally eminate
- 18:53a big Sally coming in. It would be certainly surprising
- 18:56based on what we've been told for several months.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Yeah, that is absolutely true. I can double confirm that
- 19:01with you. But it's just based on conversations I've had
- 19:03this week. They're not spending you were telling me that, Yeah,
- 19:06you're here at about the clubs now, they're not looking
- 19:08to take sally on. So no, it's funny because you know,
- 19:11the joke is how we will ask about every single
- 19:14player that a team has, even guys of starting caliber.
- 19:18They'll be like, what do you Why would you even
- 19:20ask for that guy? And you know that's just Howie's nature.
- 19:22But it's been made clear to other teams that they're
- 19:24not trying to take on a whole lot of salary,
- 19:26which you know, hey, if you look at I wrote
- 19:29a story on Philly Voice dot com examining every off
- 19:33season signing and trade that how he made this year,
- 19:36and they all it reminded me of two years ago.
- 19:38Remember we were joking where there was that baseline number
- 19:41of it was like everybody was signing one year deals
- 19:43with six hundred thousand dollars guarantee. Yeah, it was like
- 19:46Greedy Williams, it was this guy, It was that everybody.
- 19:49Yeah yeah, Well this year it was sort of similar.
- 19:52It felt like the one year, one point two two
- 19:55million contract for like, you know, a third stringer was
- 19:59was the main was the contract ajour for the year.
- 20:02So but it is interesting, this is gonna be it's
- 20:06gonna be very interesting for fans, right because this has
- 20:08been a very different type of free agency than last year,
- 20:11not a whole lot of star power like Sae Kwon Barkley,
- 20:14and you're probably not gonna get a player who just
- 20:17becomes an overnight success like Zach Bond became, or even
- 20:21a Mackai Becton so far. In fact, a lot of
- 20:24the deals that Howie signed this offseason, a bunch of
- 20:28them already not made the team. So it's gonna be
- 20:31pretty interesting to kind of look back on it when
- 20:33it's all said and done and see what kind of
- 20:35freegency period this was. Knowing that the Eagles cut their
- 20:39they're spending considerably from years before.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Yeah, the cash ben is I mean, they're not the
- 20:44only team is doing this, just to be clear, but
- 20:47this one was something we had heard from around the
- 20:49league going back to maybe the first or second week
- 20:52of March, like the they're gonna be way down a
- 20:53cash ben. I just thought it was odd. I know
- 20:55it's not how he's called. It's an ownership decision or
- 20:58or whoever sets the cash budget, but it's just odd.
- 21:01You win a Super Bowl and you're you're spending less.
- 21:04It's just, yeah, I don't know how it have to
- 21:06do to get be able to spend more money, but
- 21:07it is what it is, and now, yes they have
- 21:09to there there. They've got a bunch of young players
- 21:11who are up potentially for extensions next year. That certainly
- 21:14plays into it, but that's not the only reason. That's
- 21:16just part of it, absolutely all right.
- 21:19Speaker 1: So we're gonna do this again after the uh, you know,
- 21:21after all said, well, after the initial fifty three comes
- 21:24out later today, we'll have another podcast Wednesday morning to
- 21:27wrap it all up. That's gonna do it for this
- 21:29episode of Inside the Birds, the leading podcasts and Eagles
- 21:32Intel and is always we thank you for flying with
- 21:36us Inside Theubberd
