- 1:00now it's time for today's episode of the Adventures of Philip marlow The original
- 1:04air date May of nineteen forty nine. In the title not Tide. When
- 1:11it started, the tide was high on the San Pedro waterfront and a hot
- 1:15tempered kid had murder on his mind. There was a knife at my throat,
- 1:19of beating under the peers, and a corpse on the beach before the
- 1:22tide went out again and the kid was finally stopped. From the pen of
- 1:27Raymond Chandler, outstanding author of crime fiction, comes his most famous character in
- 1:34the Adventures of Philip Marlowe now with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlowe, we
- 1:49bring you tonight's exciting story Night Tide. It all happened in San Pedro,
- 2:15the harbor of Los Angeles. The lights on the ships were fuzzy through the
- 2:19wet mists that creeps up out of the ocean every night, and I drove
- 2:23slowly looking for the establishment of Mike Basso, my new client. One side
- 2:29of the crooked street was nothing but the smell and the sound of oily salt
- 2:32water slashing through the pilings. Beneath the piers. On the other side was
- 2:38a tangle of warped, dingy buildings equipped to satisfy the thirsts of reckless men.
- 2:44You never get beyond the water front of any port. The foghorn out
- 2:47on the breakwater began to bellow as I parked near a U shaped pier labeled
- 2:52Vasso Docks Private, and walked past the line of moored fishing boats to a
- 2:57squat two story office. The bottom floor was dark, the second floor had
- 3:00lights on. So I started up the steep wooden stairs and was halfway to
- 3:05the top and I caught the voice, and I had already heard over the
- 3:09phone when I was hired. It was my clients, Mike faster. I'll
- 3:14get somebody who can. These boats got to be handled faster. Why even
- 3:17the croup Johnny Dyke was better on this Joe than you are, Johnny Dyke.
- 3:22Why I heard a get on my way. The big guy with a
- 3:30Latin Jay shoved past me and stumped down the stairs. So I went on
- 3:35up into the office. Mike Besso looked like a block of concrete. It's
- 3:39two hundred and twenty thick pounds, hunched over a scard roll top desk.
- 3:44As I walked in, he swung a heavy bulldog head around and glared at
- 3:47me. I never held a knocking first. I guess that's right. And
- 3:52Moussa just left here. Got me all out of the mood for courtesy.
- 3:54That shocky my crew pusher good man is slow. Come in down. I
- 4:01got other business. I drink kanyaki. Thanks, okay. Now, it's
- 4:09a hot headed punk by the name of Johnny Dike. I sent him to
- 4:13prison three years ago for stealing money from me. I made it as tough
- 4:16as I could for him any special reason. Why? Sure, because I
- 4:20trust a fellow who works for me. Johnny Dike used to have Shaky's job,
- 4:26but he took advantage when the police grabbed him and found my money in
- 4:29his own house. He squealed like a pig and said he was framed like
- 4:33all cheap punks do. How does this get around to you wanting a private
- 4:38investigator? Because Johnny Dike is out of prison, got out yesterday on parole
- 4:43and he's backing town. Now, hey, you what you're looking at your
- 4:46clark? How come it says eleven thirty a twenty eight. It's electric?
- 4:51It was turned off last night and I didn't start it yet. Now look,
- 4:56I was here with Ed Giles when he heard some noise on my private
- 4:59launch out there. He went down to see about and who's that? Girls?
- 5:02My general manager. While he was gone, the lights went out in
- 5:05here. That's when I got clogged on the head. And when I went
- 5:10down, I got kicked around plenty. I'd be killed right now, But
- 5:15Shocky happened to come along, and the guy was scared off of me.
- 5:17But you happen to see who it was? No Giles did he got a
- 5:21good look. He admitted it, only he claims you don't know who it
- 5:26was. He lies an ac countact. He's an old friend of Johnny Dike's
- 5:30maybe girls isn't lying? What makes you so? Certainly was Johnny who slugger.
- 5:34I found this just the book of matches. Huh. But see how
- 5:40the edges are crimped. Johnny Dike always did that. He's nervous all the
- 5:45time, fidgeting. Sure, he might as well have left his calling card
- 5:49for me. Ah with Johnny. All right, okay, bess Over,
- 5:53before you get too far in, I'll tell you something. I don't go
- 5:56in for bodyguarding. Who wants a bodyguard? Is what you do? Mallow?
- 6:00Find that punk. See what he's got in mind. He beat me
- 6:04up once. Maybe that's all he wants, or maybe he's coming back to
- 6:10put a knife in me. Just find out and let me know, that's
- 6:15all. I looked out at the fishing boats along the pier, gently nudging
- 6:26each other, while Mike Besso told me that Johnny had a blond wife named
- 6:29Christine who ran the Albatross Cafe, and the dead Giles lived alone in a
- 6:33house at forty three Terminal Road. It was enough for a starter, so
- 6:38I said I'd keep in touch and left. Because I walked off the pier,
- 6:42the blinking neon light from a sign across the street made a swirling green
- 6:45veil out of the mist between me and my car, so I almost got
- 6:48up to it before I saw her leaning lazily against the door on the driver's
- 6:54side, A girl in a tight black silk dressed, cheap fur jacket,
- 6:58double eco strapped spikee. She smiled with one corner of her red mouth as
- 7:02I walked up to her and stopped. Hello, sugar, Hi, you
- 7:04a sweet hat. The name Ginger, that's too bad. Ginger always gives
- 7:11me hype like that. What did Mike Bessel have to say? Yeah,
- 7:15we were talking business, baby, that's all. Say. Tell me which
- 7:18way to Terminal Road and it intersects about ten blocks down. What's the number
- 7:25forty three? Oh? You want to turn right? Then? Ed's place
- 7:30is a cozy, secluded one by the water. Thanks, you know mister
- 7:34Giles huh yeah, he's around Mike all the time. He's nothing. Well,
- 7:41I'll see you around so long, handsome, Eh, I want something
- 7:58you Giles, Mike Besol's man. Yeah, so what, I'm mollow,
- 8:01private detective. I'm looking for Johnny Tyke. Why'd you come here? Is
- 8:05your a friend of his? The only one I haven't seen I heard from
- 8:07him, so I'm afraid I can't help. Wait a minute, let's go
- 8:09inside. I'd like to talk about that. Ye. Look, he's put
- 8:13himself in a pretty hopeless situation coming back here to Pedro. What do you
- 8:16think because he's got enemies like Mike Vasselas shocky, Yeah, what's he gonna
- 8:22do? Fight it out? To be smart and leave tom Listen, private
- 8:24investigator. I told you once, I don't know because I haven't seen him.
- 8:26You're a liar. You saw him last night. They're working for Mike
- 8:31Gaunt. Get out shot. I'll shove harder than that, brother. Okay,
- 8:37Kyles, we'll try it my hard way. Now, where's Johnny?
- 8:43I don't know? Come on, get up, get up, let's play
- 8:45again. You saw him last night, didn't you? Didn't you? Right?
- 8:48I saw him about eleven three. I was standing on the deck of
- 8:52Mike's launch when I heard a commotion and looked up. I saw Johnny jump
- 8:56down the stairs from Mike's office and run off the pier. I haven't seen
- 9:01him since. That's the truth. Okay, Sorry, I had to make
- 9:03a squeal on her friend. Where's the Albatross Cafe Albatruss. Yeah, a
- 9:09corner of Front and Castle at you, but look, can't you leave Chris
- 9:13out of this. She's a good kid, She's been through a lot already.
- 9:15Think Johnny's gonna leave her out of it. Besides, it's for her
- 9:18own good and I want to see her. Yeah, I suppose you're right,
- 9:20but I'll tell you something for your own good toomorrow. If you find
- 9:24Johnny Dyke, don't push him too hot. It was tough before he left.
- 9:28Now he'll have a raw height for brains to depend on it. At
- 9:37the corner of Front and Castle, I spotted the Albatross Cafe, half on
- 9:41land, half teetering on a set of spindley, still thringing the high water
- 9:45mark with jagged lumps of barnacles. I parted down the street and started back.
- 9:48When the door swung open and the lantern jawed moved shock, he lumbered
- 9:52out. I watched him cross the street without seeing me, and disappear between
- 9:56two buildings. I waited a couple of minutes, and then I went in.
- 10:00Took a booth near the front. Place was neat and clean, even
- 10:03the tablecloths. A soft brown eyed blonde and a cris peasant dress, picked
- 10:09up a menu and came over him. Good evening, sir, Chris.
- 10:13Yeah, yeah, well Chris, it's probably not on the menu around here.
- 10:16But how about a double order of plain facts? Straight? What are
- 10:20you talking about? Johnny? You remember Johnny Dike? Your husband? Who
- 10:26are you? Mister private detective named Mallow? All I want to do is
- 10:31talk to him, Chris, just talk? Is he here? No?
- 10:33I haven't seen him. He hasn't even called me. How do you feel
- 10:37about this bird known as Shocky? He always crowded Johnny, and now he's
- 10:45got his job. I hear he knows something. Have you seen him lately?
- 10:48No? I haven't. It's funny he just left here. Okay,
- 10:54so I'm a liar. Maybe you're just blind. I've heard that. Love
- 10:58does that? Baby? Maybe any skin off your nose? Nope? Cigarette?
- 11:07And how about a match for me? Huh? I suppose? So
- 11:11let's see yeah here? Thanks? Hey? These a cute had crimp border
- 11:20on the edge, especially the one put there by somebody's jittery thumbnail. And
- 11:26maybe your eyes are bad. Maybe not, Chris, but you better do
- 11:30something about your nerves. They're shot. Good night, baby. I didn't
- 11:39look back, but I knew she was watching me all the way out the
- 11:41door and down the street, so I made it real good as far as
- 11:43the next blocking around the corner. Then I doubled back fast and stayed in
- 11:48the shadows until I got within sight of the Albatross Cafe again. And then
- 11:52time to see a man. He's out of side door and slip out of
- 11:54sight among the pilings under the building. I moved in closer and found a
- 11:58rickety trail of green see planks that let out through the forest of slimy pilings
- 12:01under the piers. I felt better on a type rope, and it was
- 12:05home ground to Johnny Dyke. I felt my way slowly along the slippery planks
- 12:11went from behind the piling and on like steel springs snapped under my chin,
- 12:16while a hand pressed the point of a long, thin knife with a curved
- 12:18white handle up against my tail. You said you wanted to talk to me,
- 12:22marlows a talk, but fast, because I don't have much time.
- 12:24He's up on my foot when you okay, hey there, you're a sucker.
- 12:31Why don't you try to give up trying to even the score, get
- 12:35out of time and forget it? Sure, sure to you that's easy.
- 12:39You didn't spend three long years in the cooler for something you didn't do.
- 12:43I'm gonna get even, all right. I don't know how for sure yet,
- 12:46but I will wind up right back in the coopsucker. If it keeps
- 12:50this time, Is it going to be worth it? It could be.
- 12:52I was a good boy up there. Every time I wanted to slug a
- 12:54guard, I said Mike Basso to myself instead. Now I got it all
- 12:58bottle up inside me. I'm going to carry all that hate around forever.
- 13:03I'm going to get rid of it, and there's only one way to do
- 13:05it. Ed girls was right, they've got a raw hide for brains.
- 13:09You better put the knife away, Johnny. I think we got visitors show.
- 13:13We have Marlow rats, big ones. The peers are full of them.
- 13:16You should feel right at home. Don't sleep too long. Pounds between
- 13:26the between the thropping in my head and my numbness across my shoulders where my
- 13:33back had struck the planks. It took me five minutes to get to my
- 13:37feet and another five to climb up the street level, and then the pier
- 13:43was deserted, so I headed for the best of docks on the double with
- 13:46the unpleasant answer to my client's question, plus the added attraction that i'd even
- 13:50seen the knife that I contented to use, I still had a block to
- 13:52go when I saw a hulk that had to be shock He stried off the
- 13:56pier and turn in my direction. When I got close enough, I heard,
- 14:00yeah, I'm shocky? Or do you want But Mike's still in the
- 14:03office. Once and now on, this is no time to tall heavy,
- 14:07imlow. I'm working for him. I got a message I won't keep Is
- 14:09he there or no? Oh? The office is locked up, he's gone.
- 14:13I'm looking for him myself. Why what do you want him for?
- 14:16Because I'm pretty sure that Johnny Dyke is holed up in the back room of
- 14:18the Albatros Cafe. I only wish you were right, shocky, but sure
- 14:22about a half hour too? Like, what was that? Can't roup the
- 14:26street there? Yeah, let's go shocking. Maybe we're both too late,
- 14:28let's find out. Yeah, Hey, what day by the guardrail? Hu'
- 14:33ginger? A pall of Mike Pastos. Yeah you're right, Ginger, Ginger,
- 14:35what's the matter? What happens down there? Take a look with the
- 14:39ice scared thee I think maybe I'm gonna be sick. Come here, Look,
- 14:46Holy, that's Mike down there with the knife in his back. Yeah,
- 14:52a long tin knife for the curved white handle belongs to a guy named
- 14:56Johnny Dyke in just a moment the second act of Philip Marlowe. But first,
- 15:13he may be a close neighbor of yours. At least he lives quite
- 15:16near you. You go to the polls, you elect him, You bid
- 15:20him farewell, trusting him to represent you in Washington. From then on?
- 15:24What happens to your congressman and the nation's capital. What pressures are brought to
- 15:28bear on him? In how many hundreds of fields must he rapidly become a
- 15:33good expert? What does he vote? As he does? Tomorrow night on
- 15:37CBS, you'll hear Ralph Vellamy, star of radio, stage and screen,
- 15:41playing a typical freshman congressman in the eighty first Congress. His story will be
- 15:46a drama taken from interviews and talks with many regular congressmen, with Washington experts,
- 15:50with politicians with yes, with voters like yourselves. This CBS documentary unit
- 15:56drama, The People's Choice, starring Ralph Bellamy, will come to you over
- 16:00most of these same CBS stations. Now with our star Gerald Moore, we
- 16:07returned to the second act of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story Night Tide, lying
- 16:23with his face muzzled into the sand and the rest of them half submerged in
- 16:27the shallow lapping water. Mike Besso was violent death at its ugliest. Ginger
- 16:33turned and walked slowly away from us, trembling like a whino caught in the
- 16:37morning sun. And I told Shaky to go get the police, and I
- 16:42headed for the Albatross, where I figured I might get a lead on Mike
- 16:45Besso's murderer. When I got there, I skipped the formality in the front
- 16:48door and quietly moved around to the back, where I ended without knocking,
- 16:52and made my way along a narrow, dusky cart as far as a half
- 16:56open door labeled private, where I met Christine Dyke talking on the telephone.
- 17:02She looked up and gasped the sight of me, and then slammed the phone
- 17:03down abruptly. I was willing to bet that the party on the other end
- 17:07had the husband Johnny nobody else. What do you want? Marlow most of
- 17:11all won Johnny Dyke and handcuffs. Don't bother with the my man pitch,
- 17:15honey, because at the moment the lyrics will make me sick. I just
- 17:18left the cops. It used to be Mike Besso battle dead Martin. Yeah,
- 17:26or because of Johnny's nie it's sticking in his back, Chris. No,
- 17:30Marlow, Johnny wouldn't do a thing like that. He couldn't. You're
- 17:33on, Chris, he didn't know where is he. I don't know.
- 17:36You're lying, baby, You were just talking to him on the phone.
- 17:37You gotta know. No, I don't. He didn't say where he wasn't,
- 17:41oh what or anything about Beso being dead. So don't move Marlow.
- 17:49Well, husband with knife, wife with gun, charming couple. Never mind
- 17:56that. I'm not going to see john in trouble again for something He didn't
- 18:00get in that closet tomorrow where you'll be out of the way now, all
- 18:04right? In it is, But first, baby, a word of advice.
- 18:10He isn't worth it. Believe me. I don't go get in and
- 18:14keep your mouth shut. A closet in Chris's office, which double is a
- 18:22storeroom for the restaurant, had no window and a three inch stick oak for
- 18:25a door. So I was twenty minutes as a one man mob scene,
- 18:27bouncing the inventory around before I was heard, and the little man with a
- 18:32big meat cleaper of along the kitchen opened up and demandedn't know what I was
- 18:34doing in there. I heaved the number ten tomorrow, Juice can Adam Purnance.
- 18:37I started running and didn't stop until I was outside in my car and
- 18:41pointed for Red Giles Cottage, the only other place I knew where Johnny Dyke
- 18:45might go for help. When I came to a stop at the house and
- 18:56found Giles himselves standing on the outside steps, looking puzzled at a pair of
- 18:59tail that were blinking out of sight, I knew I was too late.
- 19:03Yeah, Marlow, it was Christine and all upset about getting her hands on
- 19:07five hundred dollars. Said I had to lend it to her for Johnny's sake.
- 19:08She say, why, oh, only did he needed help? Murderers
- 19:11usually due your boy Dyke just killed Besso Giles a knife in his back.
- 19:18Johnny Johnny killed Mike about an hour ago over on the beach. Tell me
- 19:23did you give him the money? Ah? She ran out of the house
- 19:26before I even got to my safe did not saying anything. I was saying
- 19:30a word mono. I wouldn't even know she was gone yet. If I
- 19:33hadn't heard heard what guy desk draw in a living room? Come on,
- 19:37Mallow, quit me. He heard the draw open when I was inside near
- 19:41my safe. I wondered what she was looking for. When I called foot,
- 19:45he had no answer. He ran outside after he is it, Marloye're
- 19:51gone a boat case? She must have taken it for Johnny. Ask him
- 19:53for the money? Was only a trick to get me OUTA wait a minute?
- 19:56What both keys here talking about? God the Master? I said,
- 20:00two keys on a large brass ring. They fit the ignition lock on any
- 20:03boat at the Baso Docks. She knew I had them, Yeah, but
- 20:06she also knew that even as a friend of Johnny's, you'd balk and handing
- 20:07him over if he knew he killed Basso? Right? Or are you still
- 20:11shielding old friends? Giles? Which is it? Don't be stupid, mollow,
- 20:15I'd draw the line something all right? Now? One more question?
- 20:18Do you have a gun? A gun? Yeah? I do, good,
- 20:21and get it because we're going to the Basso docks. Giles, Come
- 20:23on, both piled into my car, and in something less than ten minutes
- 20:30ripped through the white empty streets to the Basso Ducks, which were two parallel
- 20:34piers set about one hundred feet apart and jutting out deep into the bay,
- 20:40with more than a score of boats more to the inwood side of each.
- 20:42But when we were out of the car and saw nothing of Johnny Dyke or
- 20:45the girl, and heard no sound other than a dull tump of wood on
- 20:48wooden me rhythmic slap of water against the hulls, I decided that we should
- 20:53split, and I told Giles to search one pier carefully while I took off
- 20:57for the other. Later, just as I started out alone over the oil
- 21:02so plunking, I remember the panoramic view of the docks had gotten earlier that
- 21:07evening from Busso's office, So I stopped and turned and ran for the flight
- 21:11of wooden steps that led to it. I was halfway up, and when
- 21:14I stopped again there was somebody ahead of me, and with a key opening
- 21:18the office door, I crouched low and moved closer, one slow step at
- 21:22a time, thought what I knew might be Johnny Dyke. But in the
- 21:27next second the light clicked on in the office, and I forgot all about
- 21:30being subtle and leveled the thirty eight my hand at the belt buckle of the
- 21:33sharply silhouette figure. It was Shocky. I wouldn't move if I were you.
- 21:38Bust there, Marlow, Shocky, who are you expecting? Nobody funny
- 21:42man? But I wouldn't want it to beat Johnny Diyke at the moment.
- 21:45You might want to settle low scores. You know, Marlow, the price
- 21:49for two murders is the same as a price for one, So I've heard
- 21:52now, unless we straight from the subject, Shocky, do you mind telling
- 21:56me what you're doing here? And don't say I'm getting personal or I will
- 21:59and I like a big boy, all right, I'm here because I don't
- 22:02like cops. Right now they're done on a beach, swimming around Basso's body
- 22:06like kids are on a may pole. Also, I figured that before he
- 22:08blew, Dyke might come up here after the money he knew Basso always kept
- 22:11on hand. Satisfied you no word? No? Why not? Because I
- 22:15buy the switch first. You go out here, Shocky to steal that dough
- 22:18and let people think that Dyke took it on his way out. You can't
- 22:22prove that only because I haven't got time. It's see, Shocky, it's
- 22:26the odds on bet that Dyke's out on one of those boats right now,
- 22:29just waiting for the Oh this is it, my love, Shocky? What
- 22:33time is it? The time quick? What is it? It's eleven thirty
- 22:37five? Why whatch I got to do with Dyke shoving off from where I
- 22:40stand? Everything now? I look, Shocky, get back down to those
- 22:41cops. Get him up here, and Marle. Look over there at the
- 22:45end of the Starbuck pier. It's Dyke, yeah, and trying to get
- 22:47away. Go on, Shocky, get to the cops fast. I took
- 22:55the wooden steps back down at the docks, three at a time, and
- 22:56then raced across the stop with pier and out on the length of it until
- 22:59I was close enough to the end or I could see Johnny Dyke climbing over
- 23:02one of the boats. I was about to call him the stop when I
- 23:04saw something else, standing almost oppositely in the shadows some nearby, rigging gun
- 23:08in hand and taking careful ama Dyke was ed Giles. His finger slowly closing
- 23:14on the trigger was too late forward, so I followed suit and fired before
- 23:17he did, got him high on the shoulder. HiT's me, Giles,
- 23:23I know the man who murdered Besso, isn't He's right here, Giles,
- 23:29what I mean? But I just found out you were a liar about seeing
- 23:30Dyke last night from the deck of Besso's launch. I couldn't have so you
- 23:33weren't shielding him, Giles. You are framing him, framing him so that
- 23:37you could get rid of Besso and penn his murder on Dike. You'd also
- 23:40get rid of while playing public citizen whos helping the private detective apprehended killer.
- 23:45What do you say, Giles, is that it a smart guy figured out?
- 23:48Be yourself, come clean, or I'll blow your head off. All
- 23:56right, Chris, and I framed Dike. Chrish, what are you giving
- 23:59me? We figured that we'd being a clear with the money we took from
- 24:02Bassel and with Johnny Well tucked away in a big, strong prison, your
- 24:06dirty loss keep talking, So we took advantage of Johnny's loud mouth and incidentally
- 24:10you as well. With Basso gun, I was gonna step into his spot,
- 24:14your other one with a loud mouth, gyls Well little red riding hood.
- 24:21I went for the line, funny, what a sucker a smart guy
- 24:25can be. He wasn't the only sucker, baby, Johnny, stay back,
- 24:29Johnny, shoot if they move it in. She's got a gun.
- 24:30Shout for some qua, Johnny, get away from me. You wouldn't shoot
- 24:34me, Chris. You wouldn't shoot your own husband. Shot the man you
- 24:38talked into running away and til the things quieted down, the man you'd move
- 24:42heaven and earth to help so he could be shot in the back. But
- 24:47you can't shoot me while I'm facing your tenure your cheek. Cut it out,
- 24:56Okay, Marlon, Okay. It was a long hour of questions and
- 25:11answers before the police were finished, and they'd left with Chris and Giles and
- 25:15told Johnny and I were standing alone out on the end of the pier,
- 25:21where I was looking down at the shallow black water below and listening to him,
- 25:25trying to convince himself that the whole night had been something more than a
- 25:27bad dream. Chris against me, Giles against me from the very beginning.
- 25:33Marlowe, that's right. Giles because he wanted to be in Besso's place.
- 25:40My wife, Chris because she wanted him. That's right. When Besso hired
- 25:45me to see what you had in mind after that beating, he'd taken from
- 25:49what he thought was you. But it was really Giles laying the groundwork.
- 25:53I fell into the role of star witness, somebody reliable enough for them both
- 25:57to play against. Yeah, I get it, so you could testify that
- 26:03it. At first Giles had tried to shield me like a good friend.
- 26:07Yeah, and then the end had to kill me when I tried to escape.
- 26:11Sure, and just to make sure there were noose slips, Chris kept
- 26:17feeding you's instructions under the heading of wifely advice. Yeah. It practically ran
- 26:22on a timetable, Johnny. Yeah, but there was one slip. I
- 26:26found out Giles was a liar and trying to frame, not shield you.
- 26:29M hm, how was that my life? Well, look, he said
- 26:32he saw you beat up Besso in his office at eleven thirty last night,
- 26:34when he was down on the deck of Besso's private launch investigating a strange noise.
- 26:38Yeah, well, Johnny, he couldn't have because at eleven thirty last
- 26:41night, as well as eleven thirty tonight, the tide was low. Of
- 26:47course, the launch with it, and from Besso's office you couldn't even see
- 26:49the launch, yeah, or the other way around. From the launch,
- 26:53you couldn't see the office, right. That's it. So in the end,
- 26:57Johnny, you did have a friend stuck by the sea. Yeah,
- 27:03I guess that's as good a place as any from me. Maybe the sooner
- 27:07the better, any place in particular, No, just the sea. I'll
- 27:14drop you a card whenever I make Port Marlow. After all, I really
- 27:18had two friends. I won't forget that so long fellow. I watched him
- 27:32walk away until he had gone the length of the empty pier and was swallowed
- 27:36up in the empty night. And I turned back to the shallow black water
- 27:40beneath me, which way the sea and the land were close to meeting,
- 27:45was coated thick with oil and dirty and almost stagnant. And I thought a
- 27:52lot about Johnny, people like Chris and Giles he'd mixed with and trusted.
- 27:57I felt sorry for him. But then I looked up a little away from
- 28:04the water at the pier and out toward the open sea, where it was
- 28:08deeper, cleaner. Further, I looked cleaner it seemed to be. Then
- 28:18I remember that was where Johnny Dyke was heading, and I felt better.

- 31:10This was definitely a rough in, certainly not the roughest, but there
- 31:17was certain there was a good job of really throwing us off the trail and
- 31:22then shocking us with the final conclusion that both wife and best friend were in
- 31:27on It was not even something I would have thought of, and it's kind
- 31:32of a perfect sort of world we are into this story with the references to
- 31:37the sea. It's pure the further out it went, and as his only
- 31:41friend. Well, that will do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow
- 31:45with Nick Carter. In the meantime, if you have a comment, send
