Matt and Melissa had noticed strange things in their home for years, but they made a point of never discussing them around their young children. As far as Ben and Emma knew, there was absolutely nothing unusual about the house.

Then Melissa discovered the children had invented a game. They would place a toy in the hallway, leave the room, and come back to see whether it had moved. Sometimes it did. Sometimes it didn’t. And sometimes, while they waited, something would knock outside the bedroom door.

Their parents immediately put an end to the game.
