Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Simon Laube: Early Childhood Council Chief Executive on some ECE centres not meeting required standards
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Almost half of early childhood centers arned up to scratch.
- 0:03Speaker 1: This is according to a new review from ERO. Forty
- 0:06Speaker 1: seven percent of standalone services were below the quality threshold
- 0:09Speaker 1: for twenty four to twenty five. But that's actually an
- 0:12Speaker 1: improvement from sixty four percent weren't upscratched last time? Obviously
- 0:16Speaker 1: still not great. Simon Loeber is with US CEO of
- 0:20Speaker 1: Early Childhood Counsel Simon, good.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Morning, Good morning, Ryan, Good to have you on the program.
- 0:26Speaker 1: So is this something we should be really concerned about,
- 0:29Speaker 1: like what types of standards are they not meeting?
- 0:33Speaker 2: Not really, No, I wouldn't be concerned about this. It
- 0:36Speaker 2: is the Education Review Office doing their job and what
- 0:40Speaker 2: we're seeing is a significant improvement from just one year.
- 0:46Speaker 2: And whilst I know it does sound like a low percentage,
- 0:50Speaker 2: it shows the sensitivity of the reviews that they're doing.
- 0:54Speaker 2: That they do. They do try and look at a
- 0:56Speaker 2: lot of things, and if they see something slightly out
- 0:59Speaker 2: of place, it's going to be appearing on your review
- 1:03Speaker 2: and so you will end up with pretty much everyone
- 1:07Speaker 2: getting found with something somewhere that's not quite right. And yeah,
- 1:10Speaker 2: it's it is concerning, but it is why you have
- 1:16Speaker 2: the review so that you have the early chartered services
- 1:19Speaker 2: focused on improvement. And if we look at those areas
- 1:24Speaker 2: that made up that fifty three percent, the best performing
- 1:28Speaker 2: area was around learners and their learning, which was sixty
- 1:32Speaker 2: five percent, so that were above so that was really good.
- 1:37Speaker 2: The weakest area was actually in professional learning and development,
- 1:41Speaker 2: which tallies with what we're hearing of a workforce is
- 1:44Speaker 2: under massive pressure with not a lot of help.
- 1:48Speaker 1: But that still leaves an on the learning thirty five
- 1:50Speaker 1: percent that are below the standard. Presumably, I mean that's
- 1:52Speaker 1: not great.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Well, it's it is what it is, ryan that is
- 1:58Speaker 2: and it's an improvement on the year before. So yeah,
- 2:01Speaker 2: people who don't like to see it, but that is
- 2:05Speaker 2: the state of our early childhood provision and that's this
- 2:09Speaker 2: independent evaluation team that showed us every year and it's
- 2:14Speaker 2: actually a massive improvement. There was seventeen percent lower the
- 2:18Speaker 2: previous year.
- 2:21Speaker 1: How do you get if you're a parent, how do
- 2:23Speaker 1: you get a good one?
- 2:24Speaker 2: Then?
- 2:24Speaker 1: You know, how do you know who's good?
- 2:27Speaker 2: Well, that's that's a different question altogether, isn't it. It's
- 2:31Speaker 2: a bit like is that cake done? Like, personally, you
- 2:35Speaker 2: know you've got to you've got to find the right
- 2:38Speaker 2: service for your child, and every child is different and
- 2:41Speaker 2: there are quite a lot of different options out there.
- 2:43Speaker 2: So if you're going into centers and you need long
- 2:48Speaker 2: hours of care for a day, then you definitely need
- 2:51Speaker 2: to go and visit a few different centers. And it's
- 2:54Speaker 2: a bit like looking at properties you've it's only by
- 2:57Speaker 2: looking at a few that you start to build up
- 2:59Speaker 2: a sense about you know, what is it we are
- 3:02Speaker 2: looking for for our child and you might get it
- 3:05Speaker 2: wrong as well. You could find one that you think
- 3:08Speaker 2: looks really good, but actually your child doesn't settle comfortably
- 3:12Speaker 2: and that's important too.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Simon, good to have you on the program. Thank you,
