- 0:12Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Half-Faith, Let It Begin,
- 0:16Episode 9 of the Jesus Never Said That series.
- 0:21Today's title, God Just Wants You to Be Happy.
- 0:25You've heard it in church. You've seen it online. Maybe you've even said it yourself.
- 0:31It sounds biblical, but is it?
- 0:34Welcome to Jesus Never Said That, a special series from Have Faith, Let It Begin.
- 0:39I'm Angel Santana, and together, we're going to go beyond the quotes,
- 0:43the cliches, and assumptions to discover what God's Word actually says.
- 0:49So grab your Bible, bring your questions. Have Faith, Let It Begin starts right now.
- 0:55Have Faith, Let It Begin. when it starts right now.
- 1:02Welcome to Have Faith. Let it begin. Here's your host, Angel Santana.
- 1:08All right, everyone. Welcome back. We're already at episode nine of 10. Oh, my goodness.
- 1:14Today's saying sounds so positive that questioning it almost feels wrong.
- 1:20God just wants you to be happy.
- 1:22Come on. Who doesn't want to be happy, right? I mean, I know I want to be happy.
- 1:28You want to be happy. And surely God isn't sitting in heaven saying,
- 1:32I hope Angel has a terrible day today.
- 1:34No, God isn't against happiness.
- 1:38Scripture is filled with joy, celebration, laughter, gratitude, good gifts.
- 1:45But here's today's question.
- 1:47Is my happiness God's highest priority for my life?
- 1:51Because there's a subtle danger in saying, God just wants me to be happy.
- 1:56Eventually, it can come or become. if it makes me happy, God must approve of it.
- 2:03And those are two very different statements. So let's get personal.
- 2:09Heart check. Have you ever wanted something so badly that you started looking
- 2:13for reasons why God should want it for you too?
- 2:17Maybe it was a relationship, a job, a purchase, a decision, an opportunity, a lifestyle.
- 2:25And the argument became, but it makes me happy.
- 2:30Here's today's heart check. If something makes me happy but pulls me away from
- 2:35God, which one will I choose? That's hard.
- 2:40Because following Jesus is easy when Jesus agrees with everything I already want.
- 2:47But discipleship becomes real when Jesus says no. or wait.
- 2:55Let that go. Or even follow me somewhere you wouldn't have chosen for yourself.
- 3:01Happiness isn't the enemy. Before we go any further, let's make this clear.
- 3:06Happiness isn't sinful.
- 3:09God gives good gifts.
- 3:12James 1, 17. It says, every good and perfect gift is from above.
- 3:18Now, Ezekiel, I can never say it right. I'm working on this, guys.
- 3:23Speaks about enjoying God's gifts. They'll never let this one down.
- 3:26My pastor, Jim's gonna be all over me for that one.
- 3:30The Psalms are filled with rejoicing. Jesus attended celebrations.
- 3:34So please don't walk away from this episode thinking Christianity means you're
- 3:39supposed to walk around miserable all day.
- 3:42That's not the point. The problem isn't happiness. The problem is making happiness our goal.
- 3:49Let me rephrase that too in a better way. the problem would be yeah the problem
- 3:53is making happiness our god,
- 3:56that's that's that's that's key here because if feeling happy becomes the ultimate
- 4:02goal of my life then anything that makes me uncomfortable starts looking bad including obedience,
- 4:10what jesus actually said.
- 4:12Now we're going to compare okay god just wants you to be happy that's what we've
- 4:16been that's the title of episode with something Jesus actually said in Luke 9, verse 23.
- 4:25Jesus says, whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up
- 4:29their cross daily and follow me. That's very different.
- 4:34Jesus does not say, follow me wherever it feels good.
- 4:38He says, deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow me.
- 4:44You know, there are moments when following Jesus will cost us something. Thank you.
- 4:48Comfort, confidence, popularity, maybe even a relationship or opportunity we desperately wanted.
- 4:56And if happiness is my highest goal, I'll eventually walk away from Jesus the
- 5:02moment following him becomes uncomfortable.
- 5:05Wow, isn't that deep?
- 5:07I mean, it is. Because happiness and joy aren't always the same.
- 5:11Here's another distinction worth making. Happiness often depends on what's happening.
- 5:16Something good happens, I'm happy. Something disappointing happens, I'm not.
- 5:27But biblically, joy can exist even when circumstances are difficult.
- 5:34Paul wrote the book of Philippians while imprisoned, and yet Philippians repeatedly talks about rejoicing.
- 5:41Philippians 4.4 Rejoice in the Lord always, and I will say it again. Rejoice.
- 5:47Paul wasn't rejoicing because prison was wonderful.
- 5:50His joy was rooted somewhere deeper than his circumstances.
- 5:55It was rooted in Christ. And that's the kind of joy God offers us.
- 6:00Not a life where nothing hurts, but a relationship with God that circumstances
- 6:05cannot easily steal. Jesus is.
- 6:09Powerful person. And he's such a beautiful man. He's a beautiful God.
- 6:13And I love our Lord and Savior.
- 6:15And when I think about all this, think again about Jesus.
- 6:19Let's think about Jesus in the garden.
- 6:22Jesus knows the cross is coming. Imagine, knowing.
- 6:26He knows the suffering ahead. He prays in Luke 22, 42.
- 6:32Father, if you're willing, take this cup from me.
- 6:35Yet not my will, but yours be done.
- 6:38Think about those words. Jesus isn't pretending to the cross is pleasant.
- 6:45He's not saying this makes me happy.
- 6:47He says, not my will, but yours. That's surrender.
- 6:52And sometimes following God means choosing faithfulness over immediate comfort.
- 6:59Yeah. what does God want for us?
- 7:02So if God's ultimate goal isn't simply making us happy every second, what does he want?
- 7:08Look at Romans 8, 29. Paul says,
- 7:12God is working so that believers may be conformed to the image of his son.
- 7:18In other words, God wants to make us more like Jesus, loving,
- 7:23patient, faithful, generous, forgiving, compassionate.
- 7:29Holy, and sometimes becoming those things involves situations we would never voluntarily choose.
- 7:37Patience usually develops because we had to wait.
- 7:41Forgiveness develops because somebody hurt us. Perseverance develops because
- 7:46something was difficult.
- 7:48Faith grows because there's moments when we couldn't see what God was doing.
- 7:53Sometimes God is doing something deeper than making us comfortable. See, he's forming us.
- 7:59When happy becomes our excuse, this is where we have to be careful because God
- 8:05wants me to be happy, can become a spiritual permission slip.
- 8:09I know this isn't wise, but I'm happy.
- 8:14I know scripture doesn't something. I know scripture says something different, but I'm happy.
- 8:20I know people are being hurt by my decision, but don't I deserve to be happy?
- 8:26We have to be careful. we really do because not everything that comes.
- 8:32Not everything that let me let me think about that for a second yeah i had to
- 8:35pause i had to think for a second we have to be careful because not everything
- 8:40that feels good is good for us ask anybody who's ever eaten way too much dessert,
- 8:46if well it felt fantastic for 10 minutes then reality arrived something says
- 8:52or sometimes love says yes, and sometimes love says no.
- 8:56God loves us too much to simply approve everything that gives us temporary pleasure.
- 9:01Here's a personal reflection. I think one of the hardest prayers we can pray
- 9:04is, God, I want your will more than I want my way. Because I can pray.
- 9:10God, bless what I want. That's easy. But God, if what I want isn't good for
- 9:17me, help me let it go. That's different.
- 9:20I've had moments when I thought I knew exactly what needed to happen.
- 9:24I had the plan. I had the outcome. I knew what would make everything better.
- 9:30And sometimes, God had another direction.
- 9:33In the moment, I didn't understand always. But looking back,
- 9:38there are things I can think or thank God for not giving me.
- 9:42Sometimes, unanswered prayers become blessings we only recognize later.
- 9:47And sometimes God isn't taking happiness away.
- 9:50He's protecting us from settling from something smaller than we,
- 9:54well, than what he wants us to build it.
- 9:57How do we live this out? So, how do we live differently? Well,
- 10:02first, enjoy God's good gifts.
- 10:04Laugh, celebrate, spend time with people you love, enjoy your life. Gratitude is biblical.
- 10:11Second, don't confuse pleasure with God's approval. Ask, is this good?
- 10:17Not only does this feel good.
- 10:20Third, choose obedience when feelings disgrace.
- 10:23Now, let me rephrase that. choose obedience when feeling disagree.
- 10:29Yeah, when your feelings disagree, that's better. Sometimes the faithful choice
- 10:32won't be the easiest choice.
- 10:34And fourth, pursue joy deeper than circumstances.
- 10:39Build your life around Christ rather than consistently chasing the next thing,
- 10:43you think will finally make you happy.
- 10:45Because happiness that depends entirely on circumstances will always be fragile.
- 10:51Here's your faith challenge. Think about one thing you've been asking God for.
- 10:56Maybe it's something you wanted for a long time.
- 10:59Now change your prayer instead of only saying, God, please give me this.
- 11:04Try. God, you know how much I want this, but I want your will more.
- 11:10If this is good for me, lead me toward it.
- 11:13If it isn't, give me the strength to let it go.
- 11:16That is not an easy prayer, but it is a powerful one because you're moving from
- 11:21plan and because you are moving from God, approve my plan.
- 11:27So think about this. It would go from God approved my plan to God lead my life.
- 11:34And that's today's episode. So think about it as I leave you with this.
- 11:39Today's takeaway. Does God just want you to be happy?
- 11:43God isn't against your happiness, but scripture points out toward something,
- 11:48deeper than temporary happiness.
- 11:50God wants us to know him, trust him, follow him, become more like Christ,
- 11:56and experience joy that doesn't disappear every time life becomes difficult.
- 12:01So the takeaway is this. God loves you too much to make your temporary happiness
- 12:05the highest goal of your life.
- 12:07Sometimes he'll lead you towards something wonderful, and sometimes he'll lead
- 12:11you away from something you wanted.
- 12:13He sometimes asks you to trust him before you understand why.
- 12:17Don't just chase what makes you happy. Follow the one who knows what's truly good.
- 12:23This has been episode nine of Have Faith, Let It Begin. And remember, we got one more to go.
- 12:28Next episode, the series finale, and I'm not gonna tell you what's coming up.
- 12:33I'm gonna leave it as a surprise.
- 12:36This is Have Faith, Let It Begins, series, Jesus Never Said That.
- 12:40Because remember, one of the best things we can talk about is,
- 12:44if it sounds good, it might even sound Christian, but is it actually biblical?
- 12:49Have faith, let it begin.
