- 0:23Speaker 1: joining me to do this podcast today, my co host,
- 0:27Speaker 1: my companion, Mike com Pottery, my bff professional better Simon Hunter.
- 0:32Speaker 2: O Simon, how are we doing? Chad?
- 0:35Speaker 1: Simon? I don't ever want you to be lonely. I
- 0:38Speaker 1: know you know you always have me. But today we
- 0:43Speaker 1: also have our favorite recurring guest, two time Super Bowl champion,
- 0:48Speaker 1: eleven year NFL veteran host of the wildly popular Greenlight podcast.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Friend of the show, Chris.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Long Yay, so lonely sometimes?
- 0:59Speaker 1: You know, I don't believe it.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Look you're looking at a couple of guys with successful podcasts.
- 1:05Speaker 2: We're still lonely.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, I'm old, and my kids. One of my
- 1:12Speaker 1: kids doesn't live at home, and one of my kids
- 1:14Speaker 1: is a teenager who would rather not live at home,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and so I have excuses to be lonely. Yes, you
- 1:20Speaker 1: guys are you know in your thirties, Chris, You've got
- 1:24Speaker 1: a young family. Simon is rich, and you know relatively
- 1:28Speaker 1: famous in certain circles. I don't know why either.
- 1:31Speaker 2: You shouldn't be you shouldn't be lonely. There's you and
- 1:34Speaker 2: I have excuses, But yeah, women love professional sports betters
- 1:39Speaker 2: that have pos they do they do they do. Isn't
- 1:43Speaker 2: that funny that like that's like one uh one group
- 1:47Speaker 2: of people that probably doesn't get any more girls because
- 1:50Speaker 2: of what they do? You know what I mean? Like,
- 1:52Speaker 2: women are just not into professional sports betting, are they? Now?
- 1:56Speaker 3: I just always get the side on the girls, like
- 1:57Speaker 3: you must think you're so cool. It's like, I mean,
- 2:01Speaker 3: it doesn't work the same.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what else, women aren't into professional sports writing.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I can tell you that. I can tell you that
- 2:10Speaker 1: right now.
- 2:11Speaker 2: That's gotta be another peg down.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Yeah, there's nothing lonelier talk about lonely. There's nothing lonelier
- 2:18Speaker 1: than the bar at a Marriott Hotel on a Sunday
- 2:23Speaker 1: night after you've just finished covering Chris Long and like
- 2:28Speaker 1: you write and the Saint Louis Rams and like you're
- 2:32Speaker 1: at the whatever Edward Jones Dome or whatever that was,
- 2:36Speaker 1: and then.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Yeah, the Drury in right next to the exactly, and
- 2:42Speaker 2: you're like, don't you want to hear about Greg Williams
- 2:45Speaker 2: calling more cover too.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Oh my god, dude, and like you'd sit in that
- 2:50Speaker 1: press box, you'd write eight hundred crappy words about some
- 2:56Speaker 1: game that is no different than any other game. Then
- 2:59Speaker 1: you go to that goddamn hotel. You're waiting for a
- 3:02Speaker 1: call from an editor who's going to say, hey, can
- 3:04Speaker 1: you fix this? Hey, can you find a quote? I'm like,
- 3:07Speaker 1: what am I going to fucking do? Am I gonna
- 3:09Speaker 1: call Chris Long right now at his house and see
- 3:11Speaker 1: if he can give me a better quote than when
- 3:13Speaker 1: he gave me after the game. It's fucking terrible.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Everyboddy just pillages your intellectual property and regurgitates it the
- 3:24Speaker 2: next day, because the start of the chain is the writers,
- 3:28Speaker 2: you know what I mean? Like, the writers are the
- 3:30Speaker 2: first ones in, and then everybody else takes a bite
- 3:33Speaker 2: the next day. So it's like you got this thankless shop.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I agree with you. Thank you for thank you for
- 3:40Speaker 1: recognizing that it's actually you know what, this is a
- 3:43Speaker 1: good transition to a fun game that Chris you don't know,
- 3:45Speaker 1: we're going to play today, but we're gonna ask you
- 3:48Speaker 1: to translate the coach cliche. Matt Mitchell producer and I
- 3:51Speaker 1: Matt Mitchell and I came up with a bunch of
- 3:53Speaker 1: cliches that we want you to translate. But first, as

- 4:47Speaker 1: Finals are starting today, are tonight, and we got Chris here.
- 4:53Speaker 1: We don't want to not give picks for the NBA Finals. Chris,
- 4:59Speaker 1: I know you've been thinking of out. I know Simon's
- 5:01Speaker 1: been talking a lot of pros. Obviously, we've been doing
- 5:04Speaker 1: an incredible amount of coverage on Action Network. If people
- 5:08Speaker 1: are not listening to Matt Moore and the Buckets podcast,
- 5:12Speaker 1: it is so brilliant. It is our fastest growing podcast.
- 5:16Speaker 1: It is. It is nailing the analysis of these games,
- 5:19Speaker 1: and it is so much fun to listen to. Definitely
- 5:22Speaker 1: do that. Simon, give me your take. What are you
- 5:25Speaker 1: hearing from the pros?
- 5:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I would say most people, shockingly, if they've been
- 5:30Speaker 3: listening to sports media. I think most people are talking
- 5:33Speaker 3: about the Celtics are a better team, right, they model
- 5:35Speaker 3: them out better. I believe they're, you know, only team
- 5:40Speaker 3: with twenty losses in the playoffs this year, like they
- 5:43Speaker 3: just were a great off season. But the interesting thing
- 5:46Speaker 3: is you talk to the professional betters and it's really torn,
- 5:50Speaker 3: It's not really they're they're not all just buying in
- 5:52Speaker 3: on this Boston team, right, even though Boston is well
- 5:55Speaker 3: minus two thirty had a lot of bookstad like that's
- 5:57Speaker 3: a big number for a series price before they've even
- 6:00Speaker 3: played one game here. So really interesting talking to pros
- 6:03Speaker 3: because going into it, I thought everybody would be on
- 6:06Speaker 3: the Luca Kyrie Dallas trade. It's like basketball, at the
- 6:11Speaker 3: end of the game, when there's three minutes to go,
- 6:13Speaker 3: there's only five dudes on the court. And if you
- 6:15Speaker 3: have two killers, legitimate killers in basketball, I mean, it's
- 6:20Speaker 3: it's game over. Like if you have the Lebron Wade combo,
- 6:24Speaker 3: it's impossible to stop. And that's what I feel like
- 6:26Speaker 3: we have here with Kyrie and Luca. So yeah, there's
- 6:29Speaker 3: many games where Boston will do their thing right, they'll
- 6:31Speaker 3: shoot their three shad, they'll hit their threes, and I
- 6:33Speaker 3: think a lot of people view that as they could
- 6:35Speaker 3: easily win this series. Right, if they're hitting their threes,
- 6:38Speaker 3: they'll win this. But I think most of us know
- 6:41Speaker 3: how it gets in the playoffs, right, guys, get tight,
- 6:43Speaker 3: it gets really they pull you into the mud, doesn't
- 6:45Speaker 3: matter if it's basketball or football. They pull you down
- 6:48Speaker 3: in the mud and they know your best tendencies. Right,
- 6:50Speaker 3: there are no secrets, and to me, you know, talking
- 6:54Speaker 3: to We've had a couple NBIA players on this podcast
- 6:56Speaker 3: talking to them. There is no great defense to stop
- 6:59Speaker 3: great offense, right even I mean your favorite player, Michael
- 7:02Speaker 3: Jordan the glove. He laughed at him, saying the glove
- 7:05Speaker 3: was like I could stop him. It's like the greatness
- 7:07Speaker 3: and basketball. You just can't stop the greatness on offense.
- 7:09Speaker 3: And that's how I feel here with Luca. So for me,
- 7:13Speaker 3: I like to have fun betting these You've already missed
- 7:15Speaker 3: the good future of market unless you want to take
- 7:16Speaker 3: them at you know, plus two hundred on some books.
- 7:19Speaker 2: I get it.
- 7:20Speaker 3: I'm gonna bet them to win in six so four
- 7:22Speaker 3: to two series price. You can get that at plus
- 7:25Speaker 3: you know a thousand plus one thousand, two hundred some books.
- 7:28Speaker 3: That to me is a fun bet to make here
- 7:30Speaker 3: on Dallas, and I just I like this team. I
- 7:33Speaker 3: just love Luca and I think he's the best player
- 7:36Speaker 3: in the world right now.
- 7:37Speaker 2: To me, that's got to count for something. Chris, I'm
- 7:40Speaker 2: pulling for Yeah, I'm pulling for the MAVs. Yeah, I
- 7:43Speaker 2: just can't. I'm not anti Boston. I played there the
- 7:46Speaker 2: whole thing, but Boston's had so much fun, so I
- 7:49Speaker 2: want to see other teams win. And I also think
- 7:51Speaker 2: it's fun that every time lately that I mean, Dallas
- 7:55Speaker 2: has had great professional sports teams outside the Cowboys, and
- 7:59Speaker 2: I kind of love that the pressure gets put on
- 8:02Speaker 2: the Cowboys. So I'd love to see Even heard Dak
- 8:06Speaker 2: say something about it. Dak was like, oh, I guess
- 8:07Speaker 2: that's more pressure on us. Like I would love to
- 8:10Speaker 2: see the MAVs get a win. I'm a Mark Cuban fan.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I also I love I kind of liking the Luca thing.
- 8:18Speaker 2: To me and Ryan Rosilla, we're talking about this, like
- 8:20Speaker 2: who is Luca like in the NFL, you know, from
- 8:23Speaker 2: a quarterback standpoint, because in the NBA you get cleaner
- 8:26Speaker 2: parallels with the narratives, right and Luca not being able
- 8:30Speaker 2: to get over the hump people questioning him. Kind of
- 8:35Speaker 2: it's kind of like Lamar Jackson in the playoffs thing
- 8:38Speaker 2: until this year, Like it's kind of like a Justin Herbert,
- 8:42Speaker 2: like when is this generational talent going to bear fruit.
- 8:45Speaker 2: I'm excited to see him, you know, join the ranks
- 8:48Speaker 2: to the guys that got championships and he'd be the
- 8:51Speaker 2: reason why. And then Kyrie, Kyrie's got to be one
- 8:54Speaker 2: of the best wing men of all time. And I'm
- 8:55Speaker 2: not talking about like a wing I'm talking about like
- 8:57Speaker 2: a robin. You know, if you look at where he's
- 9:00Speaker 2: popped up and what he's added to those situations. Man,
- 9:04Speaker 2: you can't say the MAVs would be here without him.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I mean there's been games where Luca would go cold
- 9:08Speaker 2: and then he'd just take over, and it'd be like
- 9:11Speaker 2: he'd start the game and then Luca would finish it.
- 9:14Speaker 2: To your point, Simon, like having two guys that can
- 9:16Speaker 2: close it out if one's if one's a little cold,
- 9:20Speaker 2: the other one can pick up the slack. So I'm
- 9:24Speaker 2: going to bet Dallas full series and just hold on
- 9:28Speaker 2: for dear life. This will be the last thing I
- 9:32Speaker 2: bet for a while, you know, because I'm not doing baseball.
- 9:36Speaker 2: I'm not doing the Olympics unless you guys talk me
- 9:38Speaker 2: into it. But I'm going to take the MAVs.
- 9:42Speaker 1: You know. It's interesting, Simon. We had Josh Richardson of
- 9:45Speaker 1: the Heat on the podcast last week and I thought
- 9:47Speaker 1: he was great and the one thing that we didn't
- 9:51Speaker 1: press him on, and maybe Chris can speak to this
- 9:53Speaker 1: as a former professional athlete, the Kyrie transformation, the Kyrie
- 9:59Speaker 1: narrative of being a heel, being a guy who went
- 10:03Speaker 1: from team to team to team was so disruptive, was
- 10:06Speaker 1: a guy that a lot of teams didn't want to
- 10:08Speaker 1: invest in to all of a sudden, being a guy
- 10:11Speaker 1: that has transformed his reputation and become, like Chris just said,
- 10:18Speaker 1: the perfect wingman to what Luca is doing and the
- 10:21Speaker 1: way Luca has embraced him and the way they play
- 10:24Speaker 1: off each other. He will do nothing in the first
- 10:26Speaker 1: half and then when he senses it, he will go
- 10:28Speaker 1: off exactly when he needs it. For Chris, what is
- 10:33Speaker 1: it like to have a mercurial, generationally great talent on
- 10:39Speaker 1: your team? How do you manage that as a player.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Like someone like Aaron Donald? But yeah, I can count
- 10:44Speaker 2: a couple guys that I thought of in that, Yeah,
- 10:47Speaker 2: like Aaron Donald being the obvious one. And one of
- 10:50Speaker 2: my biggest regrets was not staying healthier at the end
- 10:54Speaker 2: of my tenure in Saint Louis because we had such
- 10:56Speaker 2: a great line and Aaron was a big part of it.
- 10:59Speaker 2: But it obviously got banged up and then released two
- 11:03Speaker 2: years later, So me and Aaron barely crossed over when
- 11:06Speaker 2: it came to like me being at my best, and
- 11:10Speaker 2: you know, with Aaron on the team, it frees up
- 11:12Speaker 2: a lot for other people obviously, so you get singles,
- 11:15Speaker 2: you know where the slide's going, you know where they're
- 11:18Speaker 2: going to pay attention. But one of the hidden downsides
- 11:23Speaker 2: of having somebody like that on your defensive line is
- 11:25Speaker 2: the ball is going to come out quick. You know,
- 11:27Speaker 2: a lot of people would be like, hey, Aaron Donald,
- 11:29Speaker 2: that's going to help everybody, and it does in certain scenarios.
- 11:32Speaker 2: But you enter a game where Aaron Donald's on the
- 11:35Speaker 2: on the docket from a offensive game planning standpoint, and
- 11:40Speaker 2: they're going to get the ball out maybe two thirds
- 11:44Speaker 2: as slow, you know what I mean, Like, they're going
- 11:47Speaker 2: to speed it up. So if if snap to release
- 11:50Speaker 2: is two seconds, they're gonna be one five. And so
- 11:53Speaker 2: a lot of the time you're gonna get into a
- 11:55Speaker 2: game and be like, man, I'm rushing my ass off.
- 11:57Speaker 2: I know Aaron's on the other side of me, like
- 11:58Speaker 2: what's going on here? But their bubble screens as RPOs,
- 12:02Speaker 2: it's get the ball out quick, and so it can't
- 12:04Speaker 2: affect the team in a way that makes it more
- 12:08Speaker 2: challenging for the guys around him. In some scenarios, but
- 12:10Speaker 2: ultimately it's huge having a guy like that on your team,
- 12:14Speaker 2: and it takes pressure off of you, you know. I
- 12:16Speaker 2: just think about like if I were a basketball player
- 12:19Speaker 2: and Luca were on my team, I could just play
- 12:21Speaker 2: my role, you know, I can not try to be
- 12:24Speaker 2: anything bigger than I am. I don't feel like I
- 12:26Speaker 2: have to be the guy to make the play. And
- 12:28Speaker 2: I think that can be pretty freeing to allow people
- 12:31Speaker 2: like play their roles. And in football it's the same thing.
- 12:34Speaker 2: When defenses get into trouble, people are trying to do
- 12:37Speaker 2: too much right and when you have a guy like
- 12:40Speaker 2: that on the side of the ball with you, you're
- 12:42Speaker 2: going to do your job and you're going to focus
- 12:44Speaker 2: on doing just that because you know that the guy
- 12:47Speaker 2: that makes the special plays is lined up, you know,
- 12:49Speaker 2: fifteen feet to my right. And so I've had guys
- 12:52Speaker 2: like that. I've had guys like Robert Quinn, Robert Quinn
- 12:54Speaker 2: opposite me, and Robert Quinn obviously helped a great deal.
- 12:57Speaker 2: And people always ask, as kind of a sidebarb, what's
- 13:00Speaker 2: more beneficial having a great rusher inside or having a
- 13:03Speaker 2: great rusher opposite you, And as good as it is,
- 13:08Speaker 2: to talk about these bookends. I think having a guy
- 13:11Speaker 2: inside is truly transformational for an edge rusher. I also
- 13:15Speaker 2: got to play with Fletcher Cox late in my career,
- 13:18Speaker 2: and Fletcher Cox is the perfect type of superstar to
- 13:21Speaker 2: play with because he's so team oriented, and you know,
- 13:26Speaker 2: there were times where Fletcher it didn't matter who would
- 13:28Speaker 2: get home. He knew he was creating. He didn't have
- 13:31Speaker 2: to be the one to make the play, and you
- 13:32Speaker 2: could make plays off of him. So, you know, having
- 13:35Speaker 2: guys like that on your team can create challenges, certainly
- 13:39Speaker 2: because people are going to game plan differently. But the
- 13:42Speaker 2: net positive effect of that is huge because it allows
- 13:46Speaker 2: you to do your job and not be the star,
- 13:49Speaker 2: because I've had to be the star before. You know,
- 13:51Speaker 2: when I was in Saint Louis, I was one of
- 13:53Speaker 2: the stars, and coming to the ballpark every week is
- 13:56Speaker 2: way different. When you feel like you've got to be
- 13:59Speaker 2: the one to make a play, the pressure can be
- 14:03Speaker 2: pretty great.
- 14:05Speaker 1: I wonder what.
- 14:07Speaker 3: You're saying, though, Chris, It's interesting that the push up
- 14:09Speaker 3: the middle right, that's that's a big.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Thing you're talking about here.
- 14:12Speaker 3: There's some quarterbacks that love to step up right where
- 14:15Speaker 3: there's other quarterbacks that love to go outside. Sure, as
- 14:18Speaker 3: at the end, you know those quarterbacks are right, We're like, wow,
- 14:20Speaker 3: this could be a nice game for me, where if
- 14:22Speaker 3: I just hold my edge only picking up some sacks here,
- 14:25Speaker 3: and like you're saying that the players make the difference.
- 14:28Speaker 3: You know, I have so many questions, but not that
- 14:31Speaker 3: I'm going to give Chat a hard time about his
- 14:32Speaker 3: Kyrie take.
- 14:33Speaker 2: But you're in football.
- 14:34Speaker 3: Is it crazy how the media can paint you a
- 14:37Speaker 3: certain way, where like Kyrie left Boston, Boston shit on
- 14:41Speaker 3: this man, like you wouldn't believe everyone made him a
- 14:42Speaker 3: crazy person?
- 14:43Speaker 2: Right, those are the nets.
- 14:45Speaker 3: I mean again, we're not here to get in the
- 14:46Speaker 3: vaccine talks, but even guys on this team, like Katie
- 14:49Speaker 3: talked about it, it's like he just wants to play basketball.
- 14:52Speaker 3: At the end of the day, He's just a ooper.
- 14:53Speaker 3: He just wants to play. So from your perspectives, it
- 14:56Speaker 3: wild out like a meet. It can really shape our
- 15:00Speaker 3: views on players, right.
- 15:01Speaker 2: I think nowadays players get evaluated for their play on
- 15:05Speaker 2: the field or on the court, but also we have
- 15:07Speaker 2: a voice, so we express ourselves and we take a
- 15:12Speaker 2: side of an issue, and a lot of times these
- 15:15Speaker 2: are polarizing issues, and that might not line up perfectly
- 15:19Speaker 2: with the conception of like who that player is on
- 15:23Speaker 2: the team, how's Kyrie? How's Kyrie as a teammate? If
- 15:26Speaker 2: you ask me, and I'm his teammate, I'm going to
- 15:28Speaker 2: answer that question. I'm not answering the question where do
- 15:31Speaker 2: you stand on his vaccine stance or running ordered mind
- 15:35Speaker 2: komf Off Amazon, the guys out there, you know, he's
- 15:39Speaker 2: on some intellectual journey that I don't want to be on.
- 15:42Speaker 2: But as a teammate, he might be a lot of fun.
- 15:46Speaker 2: He might be a guy that treats your family well,
- 15:49Speaker 2: that you know, shoot hoops with your kids after a
- 15:51Speaker 2: shoot around, and takes time to sign autographs. He might
- 15:55Speaker 2: be a really good guy to play with, but you
- 15:58Speaker 2: might not agree with some of the stances that he's taken.
- 16:01Speaker 2: And I think also, like, you know, you bring up
- 16:03Speaker 2: the vaccine stance, like this is the Aaron Rodgers thing
- 16:06Speaker 2: that I think Aaron's always like people hate me because
- 16:09Speaker 2: of the vaccine, Just me being honest. I don't hate
- 16:13Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers personally, and I also don't think it's just
- 16:17Speaker 2: the vaccine. With people like Kirk Cousins, didn't take the vaccine.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Kirk Cousins was like, I'm not taking the vaccine, and
- 16:24Speaker 2: then he went and played football and people forgot right.
- 16:27Speaker 2: But when all you talk about is the thing, eventually
- 16:31Speaker 2: there's a fatigue and there's this forced conversation that people
- 16:37Speaker 2: are going to be on the other side of. And
- 16:39Speaker 2: so I think, like you know, the Aaron example is
- 16:41Speaker 2: an example that speaks to it's not just that, it's
- 16:45Speaker 2: how you go about it that's also separate. When you
- 16:48Speaker 2: hear Aaron Rodgers and teammates talk about Aaron Rodgers like
- 16:51Speaker 2: you know guys like him, you know that people. It
- 16:54Speaker 2: also helps that the guy's got a fucking judge machine
- 16:56Speaker 2: on his shoulder. So of course I like having a
- 16:58Speaker 2: guy like that on my team. And that speaks to
- 17:01Speaker 2: the fact that, like for professional athletes, it's not really
- 17:03Speaker 2: about what the person stands for all the time. It's
- 17:06Speaker 2: about what the person does on the field, and that's
- 17:08Speaker 2: that's the value to a teammate. And I think for
- 17:11Speaker 2: Kyrie like and anybody. I'm not saying I was like
- 17:15Speaker 2: him when I was younger, but people go down roads
- 17:18Speaker 2: and people chase threads that they might be dead ends,
- 17:23Speaker 2: and they might be disruptive, and they might be thought
- 17:26Speaker 2: of as like, man, this is a this is a
- 17:28Speaker 2: bad train of thought. But people can also change. And
- 17:32Speaker 2: I think, you know, young people like in their twenties,
- 17:35Speaker 2: like they're going through a lot there. I think Kyrie's
- 17:38Speaker 2: probably calmed down a little bit. That was a crazy
- 17:40Speaker 2: few years for everybody, right, And you know, I think
- 17:44Speaker 2: we all we all have opinions. That's not to say
- 17:47Speaker 2: our opinions have change, but I think also people can
- 17:51Speaker 2: grow and realize that, hey, maybe I was going about
- 17:54Speaker 2: things the wrong way. And so watching Kyrie after one
- 17:57Speaker 2: of these games up at the desk with chucking them,
- 18:00Speaker 2: if you watched him in a vacuum, you'd be like,
- 18:02Speaker 2: this is the happiest, most friendly guy you know in
- 18:05Speaker 2: the NBA. They who wouldn't want to play with this guy?
- 18:09Speaker 2: And that's who he probably is to his teammates in Dallas.
- 18:12Speaker 2: They're not thinking about what he tweeted three years ago,
- 18:15Speaker 2: you know, like the general public is, because that's our
- 18:19Speaker 2: throughway to these guys. But for these guys on the
- 18:22Speaker 2: Mavericks or some other team that Kyrie played on, their
- 18:26Speaker 2: reality is the Kyrie they see at the stadium.
- 18:29Speaker 1: There's so many interesting threads in this conversation. Number One,
- 18:36Speaker 1: whether we're in sports or we're in media, talent wins.
- 18:42Speaker 1: It just does. And you're going to be You're going
- 18:45Speaker 1: to be managed differently, You're going to be portrayed differently,
- 18:50Speaker 1: You're going to be handled differently when you are a
- 18:54Speaker 1: game changing talent. That's just how it is. You see
- 18:58Speaker 1: it at ESPN, you see it at Barstool, you see
- 19:02Speaker 1: it on the Mavericks, you see it on the Celtics.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Everybody says it, nobody denies it. You just manage people
- 19:12Speaker 1: differently when they are game changing talents. And that's just
- 19:17Speaker 1: that's not going to change. I think what's interesting with
- 19:21Speaker 1: people like Aaron Rodgers, with people like Kyrie is they
- 19:28Speaker 1: will consistently try to outsmart and try to explain their
- 19:34Speaker 1: position in a way Kyrie used to do this. Aaron
- 19:37Speaker 1: Rodgers still does this. That is overtly arrogant to the
- 19:42Speaker 1: point that it is insulting to everybody else who's listening
- 19:45Speaker 1: because they can all recognize the truth of what is
- 19:49Speaker 1: reality versus what these people are saying. And again, like
- 19:53Speaker 1: we don't have to like Aaron Rodgers. All that has
- 19:56Speaker 1: to happen is Aaron Rodgers has to perform on the field,
- 19:59Speaker 1: and I guarantee when the Jets are four and oh
- 20:02Speaker 1: to start the season and Aaron Rodgers has already thrown
- 20:06Speaker 1: for fifteen hundred yards, the backpage of the New York
- 20:10Speaker 1: Post every day is going to be about how great
- 20:13Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers is. And when he starts having press conferences,
- 20:16Speaker 1: whatever he's saying is going to be silly and funny
- 20:19Speaker 1: because oh, he's so kooky, but what a good quarterback.
- 20:23Speaker 1: That's just the way it's going to be.
- 20:24Speaker 2: And there's also the you know, like, why are people
- 20:28Speaker 2: bringing this stuff up again? And then you're the one
- 20:30Speaker 2: bringing it up half the time, you know what I mean,
- 20:33Speaker 2: which I think can happen as well with a Rogers
- 20:37Speaker 2: or Kyrie. It's like things could be going good and
- 20:40Speaker 2: then you make a snide remark trying to take a
- 20:43Speaker 2: victory lap on something that maybe it's not even a
- 20:46Speaker 2: topic that's been resolved yet or something like that, and
- 20:50Speaker 2: then there's the hey, they're trying to cancel me, which no,
- 20:55Speaker 2: they're not. Like here, I think, here's what I think
- 20:58Speaker 2: about Aaron Rodgers. Amazing quarter back. Interesting, God, I don't
- 21:01Speaker 2: agree with everything he's ever said, but I don't banish
- 21:04Speaker 2: people like that, Like I really don't. But after he
- 21:07Speaker 2: received a lot of criticism, he said, hey, they're going
- 21:09Speaker 2: to cancel me. I'm climbing in my cancel coffin. Six
- 21:13Speaker 2: months later, he's on the match, you know, Like, I
- 21:17Speaker 2: don't know where this concept of cancel culture comes from,
- 21:22Speaker 2: but it might apply to a high school teacher. It
- 21:24Speaker 2: doesn't apply to somebody who can throw the football at
- 21:27Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers or shoot a basketball like Kyrie. They ain't
- 21:29Speaker 2: canceling these guys. You're too good to be canceled. Man,
- 21:32Speaker 2: You're too good at what you're doing to be canceled.
- 21:34Speaker 2: So that's a claim that you can't really back up.
- 21:37Speaker 3: It is funny though, like Bill Simmons even talked about it,
- 21:39Speaker 3: like Kyrie went for one first round pick, like that's
- 21:43Speaker 3: all the MAVs paid. And obviously they moved Brunton, they
- 21:46Speaker 3: they moved the guys. But like you think this guy's
- 21:49Speaker 3: I mean, he's about thirty thirty one. If he wasn't
- 21:52Speaker 3: so talking about the Earth being flat like you said,
- 21:55Speaker 3: he was saying crazy shit in twenty twenty. Yeah, I mean,
- 21:58Speaker 3: it's so funny look back on it. Where it's like,
- 22:01Speaker 3: well a reception and I don't see a curvature. Yeah,
- 22:07Speaker 3: Someone's like he went to duke. It's like, yeah, you
- 22:10Speaker 3: didn't go to duke. You played a duke for six months.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Mother. I mean take it down on that.
- 22:15Speaker 1: There are people who are super smart, super confident. They
- 22:19Speaker 1: believe they are smarter than other people and that they
- 22:21Speaker 1: can pull the wool over people's eyes. Aaron Rodgers and
- 22:24Speaker 1: Kyrie did the same thing. They both couch what they're saying,
- 22:28Speaker 1: which can be incendiary and can be challenging for people
- 22:32Speaker 1: to hear. They couch it in intellectual discovery, a journey
- 22:38Speaker 1: of curiosity. Yes, I actually thought Travis Kelcey after the
- 22:43Speaker 1: Harrison Butker comments at that at the commencement speech handled
- 22:47Speaker 1: it brilliantly on their podcast, right, he was great. He's like,
- 22:52Speaker 1: I don't agree with anything he said. The way I
- 22:54Speaker 1: grew up, I saw a mom and dad equally involved
- 22:58Speaker 1: in raising her family, a mom and dad equally evolved
- 23:00Speaker 1: in supporting our family. That's not what I see the
- 23:04Speaker 1: world as. But when I've been in the locker room
- 23:06Speaker 1: with Harrison Bucker, he's been a good teammate. He's been
- 23:08Speaker 1: kind of the people I bring to meet him or
- 23:12Speaker 1: people who are connected to me, And I'm not going
- 23:14Speaker 1: to police his thoughts, like that is his thought, it's
- 23:17Speaker 1: what he believes.
- 23:19Speaker 2: We love America. You guys know hundreds of people in
- 23:23Speaker 2: your personal circles that don't have microphones, and you would
- 23:26Speaker 2: count eighty five percent of them as good people, right
- 23:30Speaker 2: that You're like, Hey, that person, if I were stranded
- 23:33Speaker 2: on the side of the road, would pick me up.
- 23:34Speaker 2: If I had to drop my kids off, I could
- 23:36Speaker 2: do that maybe if I needed money. I have friends
- 23:40Speaker 2: that But if you gave them all a microphone and
- 23:42Speaker 2: ask them to talk about whatever their philosophies are, they
- 23:45Speaker 2: would be held to a different scrutiny because that's not
- 23:48Speaker 2: the standard for most people walking around, right. You know,
- 23:52Speaker 2: we're not going to get like a state of the
- 23:55Speaker 2: Union on everything they believe every week. And so I
- 24:00Speaker 2: do think that, like athletes are given this opportunity to
- 24:03Speaker 2: talk about things that they're passionate about or some learning
- 24:06Speaker 2: journey they're on, and we're like, oh shit, oh I
- 24:10Speaker 2: didn't want to hear that. Well, we don't ever have
- 24:12Speaker 2: to hear that with most people walking around, right, And
- 24:15Speaker 2: so I would say this, like with Harrison Bucker, from Kyle,
- 24:19Speaker 2: from anybody that played with my brother, you know, good guy, right, Like,
- 24:23Speaker 2: I'm sure if I needed help or you know, I
- 24:25Speaker 2: needed Harrison Bucker to do something for me, and he
- 24:28Speaker 2: was a teammate, he would do that for me. I
- 24:31Speaker 2: don't agree with what he said at all. For Travis Kelcey,
- 24:34Speaker 2: I'm glad he handled it that way because the last
- 24:38Speaker 2: thing you want to do is say kick this guy
- 24:41Speaker 2: in the league. That fuels the fire for the warp
- 24:45Speaker 2: sense of reality that like we're just canceling people in
- 24:48Speaker 2: the NFL. Harrison Bucker. People said they were trying to
- 24:51Speaker 2: get rid of Harrison Bucker, and yeah, there's some people
- 24:53Speaker 2: that were like get him out of league, but he
- 24:55Speaker 2: was also the highest selling jersey two days after he
- 24:59Speaker 2: said what he said. So like we often frame these
- 25:03Speaker 2: situations way wrong, where it's like this person's under attack.
- 25:07Speaker 2: I don't know if you notice this, but for every
- 25:09Speaker 2: person who loves you, there's somebody that hates you in
- 25:11Speaker 2: this country. And if every NFL player got up there
- 25:14Speaker 2: with a microphone, you'd hate half of them. But everybody
- 25:17Speaker 2: doesn't have a microphone. And that's my point is, like
- 25:19Speaker 2: most people are good to the standard of like, can
- 25:22Speaker 2: I rely on this person? Is this person a bad person?
- 25:26Speaker 2: But they might have some fucked up warp views In
- 25:29Speaker 2: my estimation, my carpenter who I hang out with after
- 25:33Speaker 2: he works on my house for thirty minutes and have
- 25:35Speaker 2: a beer with like, we don't get into world politics now.
- 25:38Speaker 2: If we did, maybe we wouldn't like each other. But
- 25:41Speaker 2: we're not forced into a conversation like that. And athletics
- 25:44Speaker 2: now we're in those conversations often.
- 25:48Speaker 1: With Father's Day right around the corner, what do you
- 25:50Speaker 1: give to the man who has everything? You give him
- 25:54Speaker 1: a winning bet, but since those can't be guaranteed, give
- 25:57Speaker 1: him an experience. I'll never forget. You give him Omaha Steaks,
- 26:02Speaker 1: because a world class dad deserves a world class steak.
- 26:06Speaker 1: The Father's Day experts at Omaha Steaks have made it

- 27:14Speaker 1: My freezer is so loaded with stuff from Omaha Steaks.
- 27:18Speaker 1: I had to start giving other food away, and I've
- 27:21Speaker 1: enjoyed all of it. Here's the most important thing that
- 27:24Speaker 1: I want people to take away from this conversation. I
- 27:27Speaker 1: think you're both wrong. I think the Celtics are probably
- 27:30Speaker 1: the right bet.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Oh that's great.
- 27:35Speaker 1: You know what part of it is? Part of it
- 27:37Speaker 1: is sentiment.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Look.
- 27:38Speaker 1: I love the MAVs. I love Luca. I love the
- 27:42Speaker 1: way Kyrie plays. I love the way players adore Kyrie.
- 27:47Speaker 1: You always know a player is great, like the way
- 27:49Speaker 1: players talk about Kyrie with such awe, his ball handling,
- 27:52Speaker 1: his shot making, his skill level. It's the Celtics time.
- 27:56Speaker 1: This team is really good and this is going to
- 28:00Speaker 1: be their one moment where they can win the finals.
- 28:05Speaker 1: In a transition year where the te Wolves are going
- 28:08Speaker 1: to get be better, the Nuggets are going to get deeper,
- 28:10Speaker 1: the Grizzlies are going to come back like that. West
- 28:14Speaker 1: is going to be stacked. I think this is their
- 28:17Speaker 1: only shot to do it. And by the way, the
- 28:20Speaker 1: Sixers are going to be healthier. Who knows what's going
- 28:22Speaker 1: to happen with the Knicks, the box are going to
- 28:25Speaker 1: be healthier. Like I think this team deserves it. I
- 28:28Speaker 1: think they've They've been to the finals, They've been to
- 28:30Speaker 1: so many conference finals. Uh, this is their shot. I
- 28:34Speaker 1: think they need it. I think they take it.
- 28:36Speaker 2: For the Celtics with the road that they took to
- 28:38Speaker 2: get here, you gotta cash in.
- 28:40Speaker 1: You got to cash in. This is this is their
- 28:42Speaker 1: one moment. Speaking of cashing in, here is a and Chris,
- 28:47Speaker 1: you are uniquely qualified to answer this question. I content
- 28:53Speaker 1: Andy Reid could go down as being considered a better
- 28:59Speaker 1: coach than Bill Belichick, and I feel like just because
- 29:04Speaker 1: he has been an offensive genius and has come to
- 29:08Speaker 1: sort of his the muse slash the engine for all
- 29:15Speaker 1: of his brilliance late in his career. Who knows how
- 29:18Speaker 1: many more Super Bowls are going to win? Belichick had Brady,
- 29:24Speaker 1: Andy Reid has Spagnolo, who you played for in Saint Louis.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Give me your take on a Andy Reid versus Bill Belichick?
- 29:33Speaker 1: Who can go down as the greatest coach? Is there
- 29:35Speaker 1: a chance for Andy Reid to go down as the
- 29:37Speaker 1: greatest coach?
- 29:38Speaker 2: Sure, there's going to be a lot of people that
- 29:40Speaker 2: are going to say that at the end of his career.
- 29:42Speaker 2: I also think like it's in vogue right now to
- 29:46Speaker 2: kind of tear Bill down. The Patriots. People hated him
- 29:51Speaker 2: for a long time, right Like for most of Simon
- 29:55Speaker 2: and I's adult lives, growing up teenagers, the whole thing
- 30:00Speaker 2: it was the Pats. I remember when Al grow was
- 30:03Speaker 2: my coach. He was a Belichick disciple, like a parcels guy.
- 30:07Speaker 2: In college. I hated the Patriots because they he made
- 30:11Speaker 2: us wear those stupid high socks with the stripes around
- 30:15Speaker 2: him just like the Patriots. We did everything, We had
- 30:17Speaker 2: all the same signs on the wall. And I can
- 30:20Speaker 2: remember going to Mellow Mushroom in Charlottesville, Virginia and watching
- 30:24Speaker 2: David Tyree catch that ball and going nuts. Or I
- 30:27Speaker 2: can remember watching Donovan McNabb keeled over puking and being like,
- 30:33Speaker 2: we let these guys off the hook again. So like
- 30:36Speaker 2: that's the reality for most people growing up, is like
- 30:39Speaker 2: they couldn't wait to see that dynasty end. I look
- 30:43Speaker 2: at the Patriots dynasty instead of looking at it like, oh,
- 30:48Speaker 2: they broke up. To me, it's like they had a
- 30:50Speaker 2: marriage that lasted twenty years and a support where the
- 30:53Speaker 2: divorce rate is like one hundred, right. And I think
- 30:58Speaker 2: also what's impressive about the Patriots is they there was
- 31:03Speaker 2: almost a decade gap between Super Bowls. If they don't
- 31:06Speaker 2: pick that ball off, if the Malcolm Butler play doesn't happen,
- 31:11Speaker 2: it's so hard to get back there year after year,
- 31:13Speaker 2: let alone to get back there with totally different teams.
- 31:17Speaker 2: And so I think with Andy's age, unless he's able
- 31:21Speaker 2: to coach a long time, do the same thing that
- 31:25Speaker 2: Bill did, where it's like you got to rebuild cores
- 31:27Speaker 2: of your team and win with separate teams. To me,
- 31:31Speaker 2: it's still Bill and I think also people will say, hey, well,
- 31:34Speaker 2: you know he had Tom Brady, and that's fine, but
- 31:37Speaker 2: how many of those Super Bowls were one on on
- 31:39Speaker 2: on account of defense? He bookended his career with defensive victories.
- 31:45Speaker 2: And I think also defense is this invisible thing that's
- 31:48Speaker 2: like immeasurable, but it adds up to offense. You know,
- 31:52Speaker 2: you talk about complimentary football and the security of knowing
- 31:54Speaker 2: that you're gonna have good field position, that you're gonna
- 31:57Speaker 2: have time possession, that you're going to play the game
- 31:59Speaker 2: on a script. I think a lot of that stems
- 32:02Speaker 2: from having that defensive foundation, and so for me, it'd
- 32:05Speaker 2: be hard to usurp Bill. But I can understand people
- 32:09Speaker 2: making the case for Andy Reid, especially if they if
- 32:11Speaker 2: they go three p or if they take a break
- 32:14Speaker 2: and they continue to do that. I would also say
- 32:17Speaker 2: this though, like is it taboo to ask if Tom
- 32:20Speaker 2: Brady and his prime is better than Patrick Mahomes and
- 32:23Speaker 2: his prime. They're so different it is it? I know?
- 32:33Speaker 2: But like I like both apples and oranges, both of
- 32:36Speaker 2: them can win you championships in this in this scenario,
- 32:39Speaker 2: both are in my opinion, that the two when it's
- 32:42Speaker 2: all said and done, it's going to be Mahomes Brady.
- 32:45Speaker 2: And you know, you can talk about the guys in
- 32:47Speaker 2: the eighties and that, Yeah, Montana, you gotta always throw Montana. Yeah,
- 32:50Speaker 2: and and and I don't like the comparison thing because
- 32:53Speaker 2: context is always different, you know, around each player. And
- 32:56Speaker 2: so this is a really inexact science when you're comparing
- 33:00Speaker 2: two coaches or two quarterbacks. But I would say, hey,
- 33:03Speaker 2: did they both have great quarterbacks? Yes, you know, including
- 33:06Speaker 2: Donovan McNabb just getting there, you know, all those times,
- 33:10Speaker 2: because you know, that's part of the Andy Reid lore, right,
- 33:14Speaker 2: Like you can't make this claim if you don't have
- 33:17Speaker 2: the Philly chapter. Like if you were just in a vacuum.
- 33:22Speaker 2: If Andy Reid showed up and coach the way he's
- 33:24Speaker 2: coached the last ten years in Kansas City, we'd be
- 33:26Speaker 2: talking about it as one of the greatest coaches of
- 33:28Speaker 2: all time. But we wouldn't be talking about him as
- 33:32Speaker 2: you know, competition for Bill. I think part of that
- 33:35Speaker 2: is he exhibited he could win in Philly. Now they
- 33:38Speaker 2: didn't win the big one, but they were there repeatedly,
- 33:41Speaker 2: and with this quarterback Donovan Knabb, who was a very
- 33:43Speaker 2: good player, but he wasn't Patrick Mahomes, and he wasn't
- 33:46Speaker 2: Tom Brady, So I think that counts in his column.
- 33:50Speaker 2: But you also have to acknowledge the fact that he's
- 33:53Speaker 2: always had good quarterbacks. Yes, he made Alex Smith look great,
- 33:56Speaker 2: but so did Harball, right, And so I look at
- 34:02Speaker 2: things and I say, hey, if somebody wants to down
- 34:04Speaker 2: Bill because a defensive coach, I would say, or he
- 34:07Speaker 2: had Tom Brady, I would say, how'd they win you know,
- 34:09Speaker 2: a third of the championships and in the game in
- 34:12Speaker 2: the in the seasons that they got there and put
- 34:14Speaker 2: up big numbers in the Super Bowl, how many of
- 34:16Speaker 2: those those playoff games that they needed to win did
- 34:18Speaker 2: they keep the points down? And I think, to me,
- 34:21Speaker 2: that's why I would I would side with Bill. I
- 34:23Speaker 2: also think there's something too like keeping that ship so
- 34:27Speaker 2: tight for so many years, Like you look at what's
- 34:29Speaker 2: going on in Kansas City right now, and ye have
- 34:32Speaker 2: Bill had Aaron Hernandez and all that stuff happened, But
- 34:35Speaker 2: Kansas City it feels like every year there's something now.
- 34:39Speaker 2: And they could overcome that for sure. But you talk
- 34:43Speaker 2: about a team that's got all these problems off the field,
- 34:45Speaker 2: and they also lose Willie Gay this offseason, who was
- 34:48Speaker 2: a huge part of that defense. You lose Lugeria sneed
- 34:51Speaker 2: and so works cut out for him. We'll see.
- 34:57Speaker 1: It's funny. I appreciate you excluding me from the conversation
- 35:01Speaker 1: about the Patriots have been good for most of your lives. Yeah,
- 35:07Speaker 1: because I'm old, But dude, I'm fifty three.
- 35:15Speaker 2: So for you, the team growing up was who that
- 35:17Speaker 2: you got tired of?
- 35:18Speaker 1: Well, I definitely got tired of. Like in the eighties
- 35:21Speaker 1: it was it was always the Niners, and then the
- 35:25Speaker 1: nineties when I started covering the NFL, it was Cowboys Niners,
- 35:30Speaker 1: Bill's Cowboys. Here's a story you'll appreciate. When we were
- 35:36Speaker 1: talking about being lonely and being in a press box,
- 35:39Speaker 1: I remember covering a Patriots game in the middle of
- 35:43Speaker 1: the season ninety four ninety five. I was a young
- 35:46Speaker 1: reporter at Sports Illustrated and I like Peter King, who
- 35:54Speaker 1: is a legend. I'm sure Chris, you know Peter. He
- 35:58Speaker 1: just had a retirement party that I went to on
- 35:59Speaker 1: Setaturday night in the city. He had like sent me
- 36:03Speaker 1: to cover some Patriots game and Chris Slade, former Virginia player,
- 36:10Speaker 1: I was a great linebacker for the Patriots, and I
- 36:14Speaker 1: had gotten news he was in the middle of the
- 36:16Speaker 1: contract dispute. I think Barcels was the coach. He was
- 36:18Speaker 1: in the middle of the contract dispute in the middle
- 36:20Speaker 1: of the season. I had gotten news that he was
- 36:22Speaker 1: going to sign a new deal, and I was like,
- 36:25Speaker 1: in the middle of the game, this is going on.
- 36:26Speaker 1: I'm trying to confirm it with his agent. I get
- 36:29Speaker 1: it locked in. I'm writing it in my column. Again,
- 36:32Speaker 1: this is before the Internet and like Twitter, and like
- 36:35Speaker 1: I have time to put it in my column for
- 36:37Speaker 1: Sports Illustrated and four days later it still wouldn't have
- 36:40Speaker 1: been broken by the time the magazine comes out. So
- 36:44Speaker 1: but it's like the Foxboro press box. I'm hungry, the
- 36:47Speaker 1: night is getting late. I eat a fucking hot dog.
- 36:50Speaker 1: It's definitely gray, and like it ends up being three
- 36:53Speaker 1: o'clock in the morning. I met the whatever that Chateau
- 36:58Speaker 1: Hotel is in Framingham, Massachusetts, and I am like, Hugh,
- 37:04Speaker 1: can my guts out? Like trying to hot dog? What's that?
- 37:09Speaker 2: From the hot dog?
- 37:10Speaker 1: From the hot dog? Like it was like I am
- 37:13Speaker 1: in such.
- 37:16Speaker 2: That.
- 37:17Speaker 1: By the way, if you want to talk about lonely,
- 37:19Speaker 1: that is the depth of loneliness.
- 37:23Speaker 2: I got one. I got one. Here's lonely, same rams,
- 37:28Speaker 2: you know, two and fourteen, one and fourteen, the whole thing.
- 37:31Speaker 2: We come out season opener. This is like, you know,
- 37:33Speaker 2: we're going to put it all together this year. I
- 37:35Speaker 2: fucking have to have ankle surgery. My ankle got rolled
- 37:39Speaker 2: up on, all fucked up, so I go go to
- 37:42Speaker 2: get an MRI. The next morning, we lose the Vikings
- 37:44Speaker 2: by like thirty. I go get my MRI. They're like, yeah,
- 37:47Speaker 2: you're done, man, and I get in the car. It's
- 37:50Speaker 2: one hundred and twenty degrees and I realized I forgot
- 37:54Speaker 2: my phone at the MRI spot. And as I go
- 37:57Speaker 2: to turn around, I noticed my gas is on empty.
- 38:01Speaker 2: So I run out of fucking gas on the side
- 38:03Speaker 2: of Highway forty with no phone in a walking boot.
- 38:08Speaker 2: It's one hundred and twenty degrees and I got a
- 38:10Speaker 2: wait for triple or whatever it was, dude. I'm sitting there.
- 38:15Speaker 2: I'm like, this is this is rock bottom. This is
- 38:18Speaker 2: like a football player's rock bottom. No phone, I'm gonna
- 38:21Speaker 2: get heat exhaustion. I'm on IR and I'm sitting on
- 38:24Speaker 2: the side of the highway in Saint Louis, people are
- 38:26Speaker 2: stopping and asking me if I'm Chris Long and saying
- 38:30Speaker 2: what's wrong with the team, and then pulling off and
- 38:34Speaker 2: keep it on going, dude. So it's like that to me,
- 38:38Speaker 2: was your hot dog story in Foxboro? Is my? Is
- 38:42Speaker 2: my walking boot story? In Saint Louis, we.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Have just written bottom. We've written the greatest country song
- 38:49Speaker 1: ever just now. And when you just said, you said
- 38:51Speaker 1: what's wrong with the team, people were stopping you. In
- 38:54Speaker 1: my head, I saw a big headline in the Saint
- 38:57Speaker 1: Louis Post Dispatch with a big picture of you on
- 39:01Speaker 1: the side of the road to the walking boot, and
- 39:03Speaker 1: it just said, what's wrong with Long?
- 39:05Speaker 2: What's wrong with Long? A lot is wrong with Long, dude.
- 39:10Speaker 2: That was the beginning of the end for me in
- 39:12Speaker 2: Saint Louis. It culminated with the US skin beat by
- 39:15Speaker 2: the Bucks in our color rush, all yellow uniforms in
- 39:19Speaker 2: front of fifteen thousand at there were Jonestone. Yeah.
- 39:23Speaker 3: It was like, it's the reverse Tony Romo. Tony Remo
- 39:25Speaker 3: was stopping helping people change a tire. Chris is over
- 39:27Speaker 3: here in a walking boot talking about I can't go anywhere.
- 39:30Speaker 3: Just I'm like, yeah, can I get a ride like, NA,
- 39:34Speaker 3: can you tell me what.
- 39:37Speaker 1: You've been through? You've been through coaching changes and so,
- 39:41Speaker 1: you know, especially obviously with the RAMS most most specifically
- 39:47Speaker 1: a lot of coaching changes in the NFL every year,
- 39:50Speaker 1: sometimes during the season. How important is it when a
- 39:54Speaker 1: new coach comes into a team that's clearly sick of
- 39:58Speaker 1: it's current leadership.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Just a golden opportunity because if you can be the
- 40:03Speaker 2: rebound guy off of a guy that everybody hated. Man,
- 40:05Speaker 2: whatever you do, people are gonna, you know, soak it
- 40:08Speaker 2: up like a sponge immediately. Know what you have to do, though,
- 40:11Speaker 2: is show results. It doesn't have to be winning immediately,
- 40:15Speaker 2: but what you have to do is show the little
- 40:18Speaker 2: results week to week where the light bulbs are going
- 40:21Speaker 2: off in people's head and saying, oh, this is different,
- 40:23Speaker 2: Like you know, the scheme's different. You know, the way
- 40:26Speaker 2: you're taking care of us is different, the whole thing.
- 40:28Speaker 2: So I think it's a big, big opportunity for a
- 40:31Speaker 2: coach to follow, like when Doug followed Urban Meyer. It's
- 40:35Speaker 2: a fucking layout. You know, I've won a super Bowl.
- 40:38Speaker 2: You know this last guy was a clown. You know,
- 40:42Speaker 2: you can walk in a building and be. I think
- 40:44Speaker 2: it's harder obviously for a guy like Draw Mayo, man,
- 40:48Speaker 2: you know where I can't tell if people are gonna
- 40:53Speaker 2: be patient because they understand, or if they're going to
- 40:57Speaker 2: be really impatient because they're Patriots fans and you and
- 41:01Speaker 2: Simon's nodding, and I would I would agree it would
- 41:03Speaker 2: be the latter. But it is interesting when you look
- 41:06Speaker 2: at these vacancies and Ben Johnson talking about you know,
- 41:11Speaker 2: why he didn't take a job is very interesting, right,
- 41:14Speaker 2: and he's playing the odds and he's handicapping guys and
- 41:17Speaker 2: he's saying, you know, there's going to be five of
- 41:20Speaker 2: these guys who are going to be out of jobs
- 41:21Speaker 2: in the next three years, and so it really speaks
- 41:24Speaker 2: to how selective you have to be when you take
- 41:26Speaker 2: these jobs. But I think what's unfortunate for NFL coaches
- 41:30Speaker 2: is they've been working their whole lives. So you tell
- 41:32Speaker 2: a guy who's been working for twenty five years in
- 41:35Speaker 2: an industry, sleeping on the couch and shoveling shit, that
- 41:38Speaker 2: he shouldn't take a job because he's going to follow
- 41:42Speaker 2: somebody who's set an unrealistic bar, or that the the
- 41:46Speaker 2: GM's not a great GM or you know the cash
- 41:50Speaker 2: situation is fucked up in a particular place, like guys
- 41:53Speaker 2: are going to jump at the opportunity to take jobs,
- 41:55Speaker 2: and not all of them are equal, and not all
- 41:58Speaker 2: the situations, as you put it, are as easy to
- 42:01Speaker 2: walk into.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Simon, can you name the fastest growing ticketing app in
- 42:05Speaker 1: the United States?
- 42:07Speaker 2: Game Time?
- 42:08Speaker 1: That's right, It's game Time. I love Game Time for
- 42:10Speaker 1: two reasons. First, they still sponsor this show. Second, I
- 42:14Speaker 1: use game Time all the time. They have amazing last
- 42:17Speaker 1: minute deals, including pro in college sports. I'm actually opening
- 42:21Speaker 1: the game Time app right now from my house here
- 42:24Speaker 1: in Connecticut. Guess what the hottest team in baseball the
- 42:26Speaker 1: New York Yankees. I can get into see them for
- 42:31Speaker 1: thirty bucks. No matter where you live, download the game
- 42:35Speaker 1: Time app. Get out have some fun this week. You
- 42:38Speaker 1: deserve it. You can redeem code favorites for twenty dollars
- 42:40Speaker 1: off your first purchase. Terms apply again. Just download the
- 42:44Speaker 1: game Time app and use code favorites for twenty dollars
- 42:47Speaker 1: off your first purchase. Last minute tickets, lowest prices guaranteed.
- 42:52Speaker 1: I know Simon has season win total questions. He wants
- 42:57Speaker 1: your take on.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Hey, let's do it.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Want to clear the floor for Simon to get into.
- 43:02Speaker 2: It on that five of them like every year, and
- 43:04Speaker 2: then I go like three and two. You know, I
- 43:09Speaker 2: think that I'd like to just stick to like one
- 43:13Speaker 2: or two and bet big.
- 43:15Speaker 1: No, that's the exact opposite. You go with the five
- 43:20Speaker 1: win three and two. This is the problem, Chris, This
- 43:23Speaker 1: is the problem with today's culture. Everybody wants to go
- 43:27Speaker 1: hash that lottery ticket. We're in this for the long haul.
- 43:31Speaker 1: We want to be able to have money in the
- 43:32Speaker 1: next year to continue to bet. You're not going to
- 43:36Speaker 1: hire the landscapers to plow your eighty five acres in
- 43:41Speaker 1: the middle of Virginia firm country by betting big on
- 43:45Speaker 1: one season win total.
- 43:46Speaker 2: You're right, build it up, Steelers.
- 43:50Speaker 1: There you go, Simon, Simon, go ahead.
- 43:54Speaker 3: I just want to I would love your Christike on
- 43:56Speaker 3: this where I feel like I'm on an island with
- 43:58Speaker 3: all the other professionals that we are all in on
- 44:01Speaker 3: the fade of Green Bay this upcoming season. And it's
- 44:05Speaker 3: funny here in the media painting Jordan Love with such
- 44:08Speaker 3: love and such praise after you know, he played all
- 44:13Speaker 3: right for half a season. But if you go back
- 44:15Speaker 3: and look at their schedule, you know, the end of
- 44:17Speaker 3: the season where they snuck by. They beat the Panthers
- 44:20Speaker 3: thirty three to three, and then the next week they
- 44:22Speaker 3: beat the Vikings in their fifth string quarterback, and then
- 44:24Speaker 3: the final week of the year they beat the Bears
- 44:27Speaker 3: seventeen to nine. Right, Okay, Jordan Love made the playoffs.
- 44:30Speaker 3: He did great them having a meltdown by Dallas and
- 44:34Speaker 3: then catching at fort Niners team that was you know,
- 44:36Speaker 3: sleepwalk in the first half. It's given people this false
- 44:39Speaker 3: security and this false hope that Jordan Love is the
- 44:42Speaker 3: next Aaron Rodgers. And this Green Bay team is, you know,
- 44:46Speaker 3: an easy bet to make the playoffs this year, where
- 44:48Speaker 3: they fit every criteria of young, inexperienced team that got
- 44:52Speaker 3: to the playoffs too fast the year before. Now they're
- 44:55Speaker 3: over nine and a half is a negative number, which
- 44:57Speaker 3: means again, I mean like at minus one forty at
- 44:59Speaker 3: this point, I can them plus one twenty plus one
- 45:01Speaker 3: thirty to the under nine and a half clos To me,
- 45:05Speaker 3: this jumps out as a young team that's just overachieved
- 45:07Speaker 3: the year before. Now their division's way harder, and it's
- 45:10Speaker 3: still being talked about as if they're a shoeing to
- 45:13Speaker 3: get in. I love your view on the screen, people
- 45:15Speaker 3: love well.
- 45:16Speaker 2: I really liked the team. Like you know, I see
- 45:18Speaker 2: why people are jumping out of the gym for him.
- 45:21Speaker 2: When you look at Jordan Love last year, it was
- 45:23Speaker 2: like sometime in November, they hit a switch and they said, hey,
- 45:28Speaker 2: you can run the offense. We'll take the training wheels off.
- 45:31Speaker 2: And he was really good, and I also thought there
- 45:34Speaker 2: was room for improvement, Like he didn't play great that
- 45:37Speaker 2: Giants game, but he rebounded it. If you remember, that
- 45:41Speaker 2: was right off the That was right off the the
- 45:45Speaker 2: Chiefs game, which I thought was a big boy win
- 45:48Speaker 2: as they had last year, Like I mean that.
- 45:51Speaker 3: Remember that Saints game, Mean, Chad, we won it by
- 45:53Speaker 3: a point and a half, but they came back down
- 45:55Speaker 3: whatever it was two touchdowns. And again they only made
- 45:58Speaker 3: the playoffs by a game. So it's like, that's why
- 46:01Speaker 3: what would they be if they lose that, they don't
- 46:02Speaker 3: make the playoffs?
- 46:03Speaker 2: Wins, win and halts, yeah and yeah, like because then
- 46:06Speaker 2: you never get to see them play the Cowboys. So
- 46:10Speaker 2: but also to me, you know, that was a really
- 46:13Speaker 2: good proving ground for them. I think when you look
- 46:16Speaker 2: at like their offense. I worry a little bit about
- 46:20Speaker 2: getting rid of Aaron Jones. What are you going to
- 46:22Speaker 2: have out of the backfield? Right like Josh Jacobs did
- 46:24Speaker 2: in the same receiving threat. I think when you look
- 46:27Speaker 2: at the offensive line, there's experience there. I really like
- 46:30Speaker 2: the outside the outside guys obviously, right, everybody does. But
- 46:35Speaker 2: I think Jordan Love's really good and and I think
- 46:37Speaker 2: the big question mark for them is can they stabilize
- 46:40Speaker 2: defensively because they have a lot of talent on defense.
- 46:43Speaker 2: Last year, I think they got them in trouble. Like
- 46:45Speaker 2: if you look at that Bucks game, the Bucks played
- 46:47Speaker 2: their best game of the season against those guys.
- 46:50Speaker 3: The Panthers put up thirty points against Yes, yes this
- 46:55Speaker 3: is late season Panthers, like when they were just falling apart.
- 46:58Speaker 2: It's crazy to think that was the game. The gyre
- 47:01Speaker 2: came out for the coin toss, one of my favorite. Yeah,
- 47:05Speaker 2: he was like, coach didn't know it was from Charlotte.
- 47:08Speaker 2: But but but I guess I would just say this,
- 47:11Speaker 2: like a bunch of teams had their best game offensively
- 47:14Speaker 2: against the Packers, and that's not gonna happen next year,
- 47:19Speaker 2: you know, at the very least they're gonna get better.
- 47:22Speaker 2: If you look at their schedule this year, like, yeah,
- 47:26Speaker 2: it's it's there's no shoe in easy wins. I mean,
- 47:31Speaker 2: I'm looking. That's the thing about this year that I
- 47:34Speaker 2: think is funny. There's not a lot of teams I'm like,
- 47:36Speaker 2: that team's dog shit, you know, like in their division
- 47:39Speaker 2: for sure, Packer or Bears, Vikings, Lions, the whole thing.
- 47:43Speaker 2: But they're gonna play the Seahawks out of division. They're
- 47:46Speaker 2: gonna play the Dolphins out of division. They're gonna play
- 47:49Speaker 2: the Niners out of division. They're gonna play the Jags
- 47:52Speaker 2: down there. They're gonna play the Eagles in Brazil. They're
- 47:55Speaker 2: gonna play the Texans. They're gonna play the Cardinals, who
- 47:57Speaker 2: are pretty who are gonna be scary you know. I
- 48:00Speaker 2: don't mean like they're going to make a run, but no,
- 48:03Speaker 2: all the games said that's their easiest game. The Cardinals
- 48:05Speaker 2: are pretty good. That's what I'm trying to drill into people.
- 48:07Speaker 1: It's like, wins hard this year, Hey, they are.
- 48:10Speaker 2: The wins are really hard to come by. And when
- 48:12Speaker 2: you look at their win total, it's not that higher,
- 48:14Speaker 2: it's not that much higher than the wins they had
- 48:16Speaker 2: last year, and you're like, why wouldn't they get better?
- 48:18Speaker 2: But this is the NFL, and when you look at
- 48:20Speaker 2: this year, I do think there's a lot of competitive
- 48:23Speaker 2: teams or teams that are trying to be competitive, and
- 48:26Speaker 2: you know, look at the Titans, for instance. I was
- 48:28Speaker 2: just doing this with the Bears and their win total,
- 48:29Speaker 2: and like me and Kyle were going, you know, game
- 48:32Speaker 2: to game, and I was like, yeah, that's a loss.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Like they're gonna open with the Titans, that's a loss.
- 48:36Speaker 2: I just don't think people understand. Like people were up
- 48:38Speaker 2: in arms of Titans like it was such an afterthought
- 48:40Speaker 2: to them. I'm like, I don't know if you notice this,
- 48:42Speaker 2: but Titans think they're good this year, and this would
- 48:45Speaker 2: be the first game of the season and they're gonna
- 48:47Speaker 2: have a Lugerious Need and Jeffrey Simmons and they're gonna
- 48:50Speaker 2: have you know, they're going to have a really good
- 48:53Speaker 2: secondary and Levis has been slinging the ball around. Like
- 48:57Speaker 2: I just don't think people understand. These wins are not free.
- 48:59Speaker 2: So when you look at win totals, you can't look
- 49:01Speaker 2: at the number and just be like, yeah, it doesn't
- 49:02Speaker 2: seem high. You got to look at the schedule, and
- 49:05Speaker 2: you got to look at you got to look at
- 49:07Speaker 2: like some of these other teams who have peaked quarterbacks
- 49:10Speaker 2: who have had a really good season and then the
- 49:12Speaker 2: next year they kind of come back down to earth.
- 49:14Speaker 2: So I'm probably gonna stay away from the Packers. Man.
- 49:17Speaker 2: You know, you have one or two that you do like. Well,
- 49:20Speaker 2: I did like the Steelers, right, I forget what they are?
- 49:24Speaker 2: A and a half? Yeah, I like the Steelers. What
- 49:28Speaker 2: are the Texans?
- 49:29Speaker 1: Steelers? Do you like the Steelers? Over or under?
- 49:31Speaker 2: Over? Yeah?
- 49:33Speaker 3: Texans were nine I believe they're nine and a half
- 49:35Speaker 3: penn at most books now since the Digs.
- 49:37Speaker 2: Trade, Texans are going to win twelve thirteen games. Wow,
- 49:41Speaker 2: I think the Texans are that good.
- 49:44Speaker 3: You know, with the target man CJ is running his
- 49:46Speaker 3: mouth right now.
- 49:48Speaker 2: I think he's different. I really do. I think he's different.
- 49:50Speaker 2: And I also love the fact that he's like you
- 49:54Speaker 2: can tell the guy loves ball. Yeah, when you it's
- 49:58Speaker 2: the same way when I watch Michael Parson and Michae
- 50:01Speaker 2: pissed people off because he talks a lot, but I
- 50:04Speaker 2: love that, like Micah takes the locker room right to
- 50:07Speaker 2: the microphone, where like these are the same conversations the
- 50:10Speaker 2: guys are vehemently arguing over in the locker room, and
- 50:13Speaker 2: Micah loves it and CJ loves it. I saw him
- 50:16Speaker 2: the other day talking about Matt Stafford. The way he
- 50:19Speaker 2: was defending Matt. You know the Leo Gift where he's
- 50:23Speaker 2: from Once upon a time in Hollywood, Like that's the
- 50:26Speaker 2: way I was. I was like, bro I watched film too,
- 50:29Speaker 2: Like the other four guys in the room were like
- 50:32Speaker 2: they were gaslighting him. He was talking about Stafford and
- 50:35Speaker 2: he was like, Stafford is as good as like Brady
- 50:37Speaker 2: was at the end of it. And when you watch
- 50:39Speaker 2: Stafford last year, if you really watched the film, the
- 50:43Speaker 2: motherfucker was elite. Like you couldn't find me a better
- 50:46Speaker 2: quarterback going to the playoffs and Matt Stafford and who
- 50:49Speaker 2: was playing better? And so like, I love watching CJ.
- 50:52Speaker 2: Shroud get passionate about this stuff and he kind of
- 50:55Speaker 2: brings the football fan out in me. So I don't
- 50:58Speaker 2: think I think CJ is going to be fine. I
- 51:03Speaker 2: think the Texans are a good one. I think the
- 51:06Speaker 2: Titans might make more noise than people think. I think
- 51:09Speaker 2: the Cowboys under is a good bet. I don't even
- 51:14Speaker 2: know what that number is, but it's ten and a half.
- 51:16Speaker 3: I think it's minus one forty, minus one fifty. Now,
- 51:19Speaker 3: just because you're right the pros they're agreeing to with
- 51:21Speaker 3: they they've come in on the under on the Cowboys.
- 51:23Speaker 2: I don't know what what are the Cowboys? What's their identity?
- 51:27Speaker 2: What are they good at this year? Like offensively? Right?
- 51:31Speaker 2: And when you talk about their strength subtracting dan Quinn
- 51:34Speaker 2: and trying to figure that thing out, like I don't
- 51:37Speaker 2: know that wide receiver corp. If Ceedee Lamb pulls up
- 51:42Speaker 2: with a hamstring, it's then you know in that running
- 51:45Speaker 2: back stable is pedestrian. So I look at the Cowboys
- 51:49Speaker 2: and I say, hey, even if it's like minus one forty,
- 51:52Speaker 2: I might take the under on the Cowboys. You know,
- 51:56Speaker 2: I don't know what the Bills are, but I think
- 51:58Speaker 2: people are people are outing them out. I think we're
- 52:01Speaker 2: about the Jets for that division.
- 52:02Speaker 3: You feeling good about the Jets at this point with
- 52:04Speaker 3: that division or you're not drinking the kool aid yet.
- 52:06Speaker 2: Injuries It's just I worry too much about a team
- 52:10Speaker 2: that last year had a bunch of problems with injuries
- 52:13Speaker 2: and then thematically.
- 52:14Speaker 3: Though, Chris, that's good because it usually balances historically.
- 52:19Speaker 2: Yeah, injury love.
- 52:20Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's about depth too, right, Like again, Aaron
- 52:24Speaker 1: Rodgers forty years old coming off in achilles. If he's got.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Tyrod Taylor, Tyrod Taylor, there are boys they have a
- 52:30Speaker 2: high floor because they're used to playing in fucked up situations. Yeah,
- 52:36Speaker 2: But like even if Aaron stays healthy, you bring in
- 52:40Speaker 2: Mike Williams, he's had injuries. You bring in Tyron Smith,
- 52:43Speaker 2: he's had injuries. You know, you've got a bunch of
- 52:46Speaker 2: guys coming back off of are And I just think
- 52:52Speaker 2: the Jets are too patchworky for me. And last year
- 52:55Speaker 2: when they were healthy at the meanning of the season,
- 52:57Speaker 2: I said they could go to the super Bowl, Like
- 53:00Speaker 2: like I think they were my AFC pick before Aaron
- 53:02Speaker 2: Tour's Achilles. But I just think there's so many things
- 53:06Speaker 2: that can go wrong from an injury standpoint, and I
- 53:08Speaker 2: just don't count the bills out when you have a
- 53:10Speaker 2: quarterback like Josh Allen. We've been seeing this happen for
- 53:14Speaker 2: a long time where you can't pay the wide receiver
- 53:16Speaker 2: and it's an okay deal because you've got a generational
- 53:20Speaker 2: talented quarterback. I mean, look at the Chiefs. I'm not
- 53:23Speaker 2: saying they're like the Chiefs, but people didn't think the
- 53:25Speaker 2: Chiefs are going to be okay after Tyreek Love. There
- 53:28Speaker 2: was a faction of people who thought that, and two
- 53:31Speaker 2: Super Bowls later, they're just fine. They figured out a
- 53:33Speaker 2: way around it because they have that guy. And I
- 53:36Speaker 2: think when you talk to Brandon Bean, we have Brandon
- 53:38Speaker 2: Bean on the show. That offense the second half of
- 53:41Speaker 2: the season wasn't running through Diggs, and that's what made
- 53:43Speaker 2: it better. You know, they realized that we got this
- 53:46Speaker 2: guy kin kid who's like, who's like a real receiving
- 53:50Speaker 2: tight end out there. We're going to run this thing
- 53:52Speaker 2: through the two tight ends. We're going to get the
- 53:54Speaker 2: ball to the backs out of the backfield. You saw
- 53:56Speaker 2: a lot of that that h trade stuff they do
- 53:58Speaker 2: to really put linebackers in to buying. You know, we're
- 54:01Speaker 2: gonna run the ball. Look what they did to the Cowboys.
- 54:04Speaker 2: And guess what this Curtis Samuel guy, he was with
- 54:07Speaker 2: Joe Brady. And you know this this kid from Florida State,
- 54:11Speaker 2: Kean Coleman, we don't know he could be he could
- 54:15Speaker 2: be a thousand yard guy, and so that's what they're
- 54:17Speaker 2: banking on. We're gonna run the offense through the tight
- 54:19Speaker 2: ends and somebody is gonna step up at wide receiver.
- 54:21Speaker 2: And how much different is that team? Really? I worry
- 54:24Speaker 2: more about the losses of guys like Mitch Morris, uh
- 54:27Speaker 2: and and people like that, you know, but I think
- 54:30Speaker 2: Sean's gonna be able to figure out defensively, and I
- 54:32Speaker 2: would I would look at the Bills total.
- 54:35Speaker 1: You know, it's funny you mentioned the Titans. Simon and
- 54:39Speaker 1: I have had this conversation about the Titans plus four
- 54:42Speaker 1: and a half against the Bears in Week one, which
- 54:45Speaker 1: I like a lot. I think the wise guys are
- 54:48Speaker 1: are sort of coming.
- 54:50Speaker 3: I keep saying, people, wait, this is gonna hit six.
- 54:53Speaker 3: It's just gonna keep growing.
- 54:54Speaker 1: It's gonna it's gonna It's right, it's gonna go up.
- 54:56Speaker 1: But the Titans, to me, are an interesting team. You
- 54:59Speaker 1: mentioned Jeffrey Simmons and when he is playing, he is
- 55:02Speaker 1: an elite, elite defensive lineman, and you mentioned they've improved
- 55:08Speaker 1: their defensive backfield. Also, fans don't recognize the impact an
- 55:15Speaker 1: offensive line coach like Bill Callahan can have. There is
- 55:18Speaker 1: a reason he has had a job for thirty something
- 55:22Speaker 1: years in the NFL doing this one thing, going from
- 55:25Speaker 1: place to place. There's a reason the Browns were so
- 55:28Speaker 1: dominant as a rush team, and people like them no
- 55:31Speaker 1: matter who was playing running back. Like, explain what someone
- 55:35Speaker 1: like that on a coaching staff, who not a lot
- 55:37Speaker 1: of people know, can do for a team.
- 55:40Speaker 2: Well, most of the lines are made up of a
- 55:42Speaker 2: few guys that you're like, they're not studs. I mean,
- 55:45Speaker 2: you know, they're interchangeable. We can you know, there might
- 55:48Speaker 2: be a swing guard that you make work or a
- 55:50Speaker 2: rookie that And I think what a guy like Bill
- 55:53Speaker 2: does is he puts people in the right place. And
- 55:55Speaker 2: when an offensive line is well coached, the ceiling is
- 55:58Speaker 2: so high. Right, the Eagles O line is a poor example.
- 56:02Speaker 2: They have a great coach and they have like like
- 56:04Speaker 2: monsters up front, you know, genetically different cats. But there's
- 56:09Speaker 2: a lot of really good offensive line coaches. And the
- 56:12Speaker 2: Patriots and Scar for a long time, they're like, he
- 56:15Speaker 2: would make groups of guys that weren't special athletes or
- 56:19Speaker 2: you know, necessarily high picks serviceable. And I've seen it happen.
- 56:23Speaker 2: I've seen it happen with Stout individually, and I've seen
- 56:25Speaker 2: it happene with Scar and you know, I've hung out
- 56:28Speaker 2: in Paul Boudreau's OH line room for years when I
- 56:30Speaker 2: was in Saint Louis. Like, I know what what it
- 56:33Speaker 2: looks like when an offensive line is jelled and is
- 56:37Speaker 2: well coached. And I think, you know, like from a
- 56:39Speaker 2: Bill Callahan standpoint, they're going to be able to run
- 56:42Speaker 2: the football right and guys are going to be in
- 56:44Speaker 2: the right positions to suit their talents. And I think
- 56:47Speaker 2: you know where another group might draft a guy and
- 56:50Speaker 2: the coach isn't worth his salt, and you might have
- 56:53Speaker 2: a guy at guard when he should be a tackle,
- 56:55Speaker 2: or maybe the guy who's a left guard and explaining
- 56:57Speaker 2: it right guard, or you know, maybe it's a common
- 57:00Speaker 2: nation of two guys that aren't working well together and
- 57:02Speaker 2: this guy's seen it all. So I think when you
- 57:04Speaker 2: look at like if there was one position group with
- 57:07Speaker 2: a young quarterback, a second year guy and an infusion
- 57:10Speaker 2: of talent around him, that you want to just say, hey,
- 57:13Speaker 2: set it and forget it. Hire a guy like Bill
- 57:17Speaker 2: and and I think, uh, I think you'll get the results.
- 57:20Speaker 2: So they're they're total six and a half. I like
- 57:23Speaker 2: the over on that, I like the I like the
- 57:27Speaker 2: under on the Giants. I don't love it, but I
- 57:29Speaker 2: like it. And I'll give you another one. The Chargers
- 57:32Speaker 2: over eight and a half games, they're going to be
- 57:35Speaker 2: a better football team than were last year. I don't
- 57:37Speaker 2: care who they had to shed, because coaching is important
- 57:41Speaker 2: in this league. And Mars I think they've spent five
- 57:44Speaker 2: million on the d line.
- 57:46Speaker 3: Yeah, it makes me a little nervous, a little scary question.
- 57:48Speaker 3: But you might be giving up two hundred yards a
- 57:50Speaker 3: game Russian.
- 57:51Speaker 2: Hey, but what's much different, you know than the people
- 57:55Speaker 2: they've been they've been they've been porous, you know, and
- 57:58Speaker 2: on defense they've been out of sync. When they've been
- 58:01Speaker 2: good on the back end, they're not so good upfront
- 58:03Speaker 2: and vice versa. So I just think, more than anything,
- 58:05Speaker 2: if you bring in Greg Roman, you run the football,
- 58:09Speaker 2: you know, justin Herbert to me is an elite talent.
- 58:12Speaker 2: He's just got to realize it. And if Hardball can't
- 58:15Speaker 2: get it out of him, I mean he got it
- 58:16Speaker 2: out of Alex Smith, you know what I mean. I
- 58:19Speaker 2: feel like the Chargers could be, uh could be sneaky
- 58:23Speaker 2: this year. So I like Steelers, Chargers you know, if
- 58:28Speaker 2: I had to, if I had to take an under,
- 58:30Speaker 2: it might be the h It might be the Giants,
- 58:32Speaker 2: because I just don't feel like the Giants are taking
- 58:34Speaker 2: it seriously this year. You know. My theory is that
- 58:37Speaker 2: they're ready to hire Bill in a year.
- 58:41Speaker 1: Oh that's interesting.
- 58:43Speaker 2: Well what they do, Like, you know, they didn't go
- 58:46Speaker 2: out and get better. It just feels like they're like,
- 58:48Speaker 2: all right, we're gonna eat this Daniel Jones mistake and
- 58:50Speaker 2: figure it out in the year.
- 58:53Speaker 1: Hmm, hear that. But you know it's like, look, everyone
- 58:59Speaker 1: thinks everyone last year was like Dave Ball's a genius
- 59:02Speaker 1: and uh he was Coach of the Year and look
- 59:05Speaker 1: what he did with Daniel Jones. So it's going to
- 59:08Speaker 1: be an expensive proposition to get rid of Dayball and
- 59:10Speaker 1: then bring in Belichick. But also, boy, that would be
- 59:13Speaker 1: James bring it back.
- 59:15Speaker 2: Like if they go under on the wind total, they're
- 59:18Speaker 2: going to fire a table and that's a that's a
- 59:22Speaker 2: very I understand the the New England thing, but at
- 59:26Speaker 2: least you're going offense to defense. And I think Bill's
- 59:28Speaker 2: like a rule breaker where you're like, hey, with his
- 59:31Speaker 2: history in New York, I could see that being a
- 59:34Speaker 2: romantic idea for them.
- 59:36Speaker 3: I think the whispers are Philadelphia Sirianni doesn't work out.
- 59:41Speaker 2: Bill apparently got dinner with the owner like whatever. It
- 59:44Speaker 2: was three weeks ago.
- 59:45Speaker 3: So the rumors, the rumors around here are going crazy
- 59:47Speaker 3: about Belichick and the Eagles.
- 59:49Speaker 2: Yeah, seats are a little warmer this year.
- 59:52Speaker 1: Yeah, speaking of seats being warm. Before we let you go, Yeah,
- 59:56Speaker 1: I want you to respond to some NF coaching cliches,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: tell us what it really means. We talked about micro
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: Parsons brings the locker room talk to the microphone translate. Uh,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: he's in the best shape of his life.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: So it's probably about a guy who hasn't been in
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: the best shape of his life. It's probably a guy
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: who at some point was in a doghouse, although without
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: a little more context, it could be somebody that this
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: is talking about. Jordan Davis on the Eagles. Yeah, it's yeah,
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: this guy's had George. He's in the best shape of
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: his life. Like the elephant in the room is this
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: guy hasn't been able to run in the third quarter
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: other than like running down Josh Allen in the rain
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: against the Bills. Like there's hope, right, there's hope. We've
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: acknowledged the issue. We're working on it. We're running the
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: big fella. Don't ask me any more questions about it.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: This guy makes plays you won't see on the stat sheet.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I like this one because this is a coach
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: sticking out for a player that might be really integral
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: to what they do on the offensive defensive side of
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: the ball, but fans might not understand. And maybe there's
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: some heat, whether it's a draft pick or a guy
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: who earned a big contract where he's not producing from
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: a statistical standpoint. You know, I was always a big
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: pressure disruption guy, you know, and sometimes I didn't get home.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: So I loved it when a coach would actually point
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: out the fact that, like, hey, when Robert Quinn made
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: that play, it was Chris or you know. That's that's
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: a coach sticking up for a player that might not
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: always show up on the stat sheet and the way
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: that fans want them to.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: All Right, Last one, we have to trust the process.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: Things aren't good. Things are not good. But I don't
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: have another answer for you. We're just going to keep
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: doing the thing that I know how to do and
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: that I said I do because I don't have another
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: plan and please be patient with us.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what you're saying. Like when you're Brian Dayball
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: in week ten.
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: Seven, you can only say that year two though of
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: your tenure. After year two, you can't trust the process anymore.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: Do you know what I'm saying?
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: No, totally, there's no patience. There is no process after
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: year two. The process after year two is you blow
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: it up.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: Yeah, you blow it up. And that's what Ben Jonson
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: was talking about.
