Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:32Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:34Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:36Speaker 1: episode or Disgraceland to the other, the backyard, to dig
- 0:39Speaker 1: into the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth and
- 0:42Speaker 1: to confront the myth and to reclaim the story. On
- 0:44Speaker 1: this bonus episode, Sonic Youth The Definition of Punk, a
- 0:49Speaker 1: Weezer episode preview, and an update on our Made Madness
- 0:53Speaker 1: sitcom music Slugfest, plus your voicemails, texts, emails, comments, dms,
- 0:58Speaker 1: and as always, a whole lot of Rosie. This is
- 1:01Speaker 1: the podcast for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent
- 1:04Speaker 1: thinkers who know that the best history is the history
- 1:07Speaker 1: that gets buried. Disgraceland is where I tell the stories
- 1:10Speaker 1: they didn't want told, the kind you'll end up telling
- 1:12Speaker 1: someone else. All right, disc goes, let's get into it.
- 1:29Speaker 1: So I'm writing about Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore from
- 1:32Speaker 1: Sonic Youth this week. It's for an upcoming episode, obviously,
- 1:36Speaker 1: and the episode is less about one of the coolest
- 1:41Speaker 1: rock and roll couples to ever take the stage together,
- 1:44Speaker 1: though it's partly about their relationship, but it's more about
- 1:48Speaker 1: the true crime at the heart of the Sonic Youth
- 1:51Speaker 1: album cover for Go, one of the coolest album covers
- 1:55Speaker 1: of all time, and cool. The concept of cool. It
- 2:00Speaker 1: came up over and over again in the Sonic Youth
- 2:02Speaker 1: research and in the research for the crime photo depicted
- 2:06Speaker 1: in the album's art. Cool as in cool sound, cool look,
- 2:11Speaker 1: cool attitude, cool as in cool way of living your life,
- 2:14Speaker 1: cool as it being cool to each other, to your fans,
- 2:17Speaker 1: to your wife, cool thing, all of that. Okay, Sonic
- 2:21Speaker 1: Youth were the coolest, and then they weren't thirst and
- 2:25Speaker 1: more lost his cool. But you can't take away from
- 2:30Speaker 1: what that band was, from what they created, from the
- 2:33Speaker 1: impact that they had. I did a podcast interview last
- 2:37Speaker 1: week on a show with some friends of mine, show
- 2:38Speaker 1: called Stuff they Don't Want you to Know. It's not
- 2:40Speaker 1: out yet, but it'll be out soon, and they asked
- 2:43Speaker 1: me to describe Sonic Youth, and I said, that the
- 2:45Speaker 1: band was a mix of East Coast no wave and
- 2:48Speaker 1: West Coast hardcore. And I suppose that that's just the
- 2:53Speaker 1: music historians half cute way of describing their music. In
- 2:58Speaker 1: describing Raymond Petibon, the artist who created the artwork for
- 3:04Speaker 1: Sonic Youth, Goo Greg Ginn from Black Flag's brother, Petibon,
- 3:10Speaker 1: the dude who created all those great Black Flag album
- 3:13Speaker 1: covers SSD Flyers, you recognize this stuff. I describe Petibon
- 3:19Speaker 1: in the following way. This is when I was writing
- 3:22Speaker 1: about the episode yesterday, by the way, not in the
- 3:24Speaker 1: podcast interview, but I wrote the following. In a word,
- 3:27Speaker 1: Petabond's work is punk. Here are some other words. Petabond's
- 3:31Speaker 1: art is subversive, It's dangerous, larcenus and again totally unique
- 3:37Speaker 1: like real punk, no matter the context seventies eighties East coast,
- 3:42Speaker 1: West Coast UK US. You know it when you hear it.
- 3:47Speaker 1: With Petabond's art, you know it when you see it.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Now about Sonic Youth, I wrote, when Sonic Youth began
- 3:54Speaker 1: back in nineteen eighty one, they weren't punk. Punk was dead.
- 3:57Speaker 1: They weren't new wave, they were no wave. They weren't
- 4:00Speaker 1: just loud they were noise, and they weren't your typical
- 4:04Speaker 1: rock and roll band set up. There was a girl
- 4:06Speaker 1: in the band and her name was Kim Kim Gordon,
- 4:10Speaker 1: and she was a badass, not some cutesy ornament, not
- 4:13Speaker 1: some sultry front woman. She was gorgeous, sure, but beyond stereotyping.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Her beauty seemed to spring from her strength, not polish.
- 4:22Speaker 1: So in trying to describe the coolness of this band,
- 4:26Speaker 1: the coolness of the artist, Raymond Peedimond, that they collaborated
- 4:31Speaker 1: with the coolness of the Goo album cover, I kept
- 4:34Speaker 1: coming up against the word punk, and Sonic Youth was
- 4:37Speaker 1: heavily influenced by seventies punk rock. Thurstay Moore was there
- 4:42Speaker 1: at nearly every important late seventies early eighties New York
- 4:46Speaker 1: City punk moment. Yet Sonic Youth they're not really thought
- 4:49Speaker 1: of as a punk band. They're thought of as something else,
- 4:53Speaker 1: and that's fine. I don't really care, only so much
- 4:55Speaker 1: as a matter of my own intellectual curiosity, how do
- 4:59Speaker 1: we categorize this band, or any band from the eighties
- 5:02Speaker 1: or nineties who came out of the influence of punk. Again,
- 5:06Speaker 1: back to what I said, like real punk, No matter
- 5:08Speaker 1: the context seventies eighties, East Coast, West Coast, UK, US.
- 5:13Speaker 1: You know it when you hear it. Now? Have you
- 5:16Speaker 1: ever heard Jerry Lee Lewis's Live at the Star Club
- 5:19Speaker 1: album from nineteen sixty four. If that is not punk rock,
- 5:23Speaker 1: I don't know what it is. How about the Sonics album?
- 5:27Speaker 1: Here are the Sonics from nineteen sixty five, also way punk.
- 5:31Speaker 1: These albums are punk in sound, if not attitude. But
- 5:36Speaker 1: what about Miles Davis is on the Corner that record
- 5:39Speaker 1: from nineteen seventy two, or John Lennon's Sometime in New
- 5:41Speaker 1: York City, also from seventy two. The attitudes expressed by
- 5:45Speaker 1: these artists on these albums, they're about as subversive as
- 5:48Speaker 1: you'll find on anything by the Ramones or the Clash.
- 5:52Speaker 1: But punk rock as a musical term, it didn't come
- 5:54Speaker 1: into play until after Jerry Lee Lewis and the Sonics
- 5:58Speaker 1: and Miles and John. It didn't come into play until
- 6:00Speaker 1: nineteen seventy two, when Lenny Ky used the phrase punk
- 6:03Speaker 1: rock in his liner notes to his Excellent Nuggets compilation.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Now Miriam Webster The Dictionary defines punk rock as rock
- 6:12Speaker 1: music marked by extreme and often deliberately offensive expressions. Of
- 6:18Speaker 1: alienation and social discontent. So by that definition, all of
- 6:23Speaker 1: the albums I mentioned, Jerry Lee Lewis's Star Club, the Sonics,
- 6:28Speaker 1: here are the Sonics, the John Lennon Sometime in New
- 6:31Speaker 1: York City album, even Miles Davis is on the Corner.
- 6:35Speaker 1: All of these, by that definition, could be considered punk rock,
- 6:38Speaker 1: but they're not. And I kind of get it again
- 6:41Speaker 1: to me, the first punk rock album is the Ramones album,
- 6:45Speaker 1: the self titled album from nineteen seventy six. All these
- 6:49Speaker 1: albums came before, and there's a whole host of other
- 6:52Speaker 1: albums that are punk in attitude and in sound but
- 6:57Speaker 1: aren't considered punk. So what are they? What albums by
- 7:02Speaker 1: which artists are punkin attitude, even in sound, but are
- 7:05Speaker 1: not considered punk rock. Johnny Cash at San Quentin, LCD
- 7:10Speaker 1: Sound Systems, Dance Yourself Clean, Peaches, The Teaches of Peaches,
- 7:14Speaker 1: Paul McCartney's ram Tori Amos's Strange Little Girls, Zappa Massive Attack,
- 7:20Speaker 1: Beef Heart. What albums by which artists are punkin attitude
- 7:24Speaker 1: by your estimation, even in sound, but are not considered
- 7:28Speaker 1: punk rock? What do you got? Let me know? Six
- 7:31Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight voicemail
- 7:34Speaker 1: and text. This is a fascinating question that I'm hoping
- 7:38Speaker 1: we can dissect and debate here in the after Party
- 7:41Speaker 1: over the coming weeks and coming episodes again six one
- 7:44Speaker 1: seven nine oh six sixty six three eight let me
- 7:47Speaker 1: know which albums are not considered to be punk rock
- 7:51Speaker 1: but that are now None of the albums or artists
- 7:55Speaker 1: that I just mentioned are listed on the new Rolling
- 7:58Speaker 1: Stone list of one hundred Great punk Rock Albums of
- 8:00Speaker 1: All time. This list, I refuse to get upset about it.
- 8:07Speaker 1: I can no longer emotionally attach myself to the monsters
- 8:09Speaker 1: at Rolling Stone Magazine who who create these god forsaken lists.
- 8:13Speaker 1: This one, released two days ago, has been called, among
- 8:18Speaker 1: other things, absolute chaos. And you know that's for those
- 8:22Speaker 1: of us who are you know, less emotionally centered than
- 8:25Speaker 1: I am, I guess, and less susceptible to complete and
- 8:29Speaker 1: total rage bait, which which God damn this list, the
- 8:33Speaker 1: fall Over Circle, Jerks, Turnstile above, Johnny Thunders, Green Day above,
- 8:38Speaker 1: Minor Threat, just listill driving nuts. But I'm not gonna
- 8:40Speaker 1: let it drive me nuts. I'm not now Zeth and
- 8:43Speaker 1: I are going to get into this list, and we're
- 8:44Speaker 1: going to We're going to discuss the insane thinking around
- 8:48Speaker 1: punk rock over at Rolling Stone in the exclusive section
- 8:52Speaker 1: of this after party, and we're also going to get
- 8:54Speaker 1: into the mechanics a little bit to the end of
- 8:57Speaker 1: the mechanics behind these lists, how they're put together. We
- 9:00Speaker 1: talked about that that great New York Times list a
- 9:03Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago about the greatest living American songwriters,
- 9:07Speaker 1: and we have some information about how that list came
- 9:09Speaker 1: to be, some behind the scenes action. We're going to
- 9:11Speaker 1: talk about that all coming up. Like I said in
- 9:14Speaker 1: the exclusive section of the after Party, go to disgrace
- 9:16Speaker 1: slampod dot com to sign up to become an all
- 9:18Speaker 1: access member and unlock exclusive content like this plus ad
- 9:22Speaker 1: free content now in the feed this week, our new
- 9:25Speaker 1: episode on Christina Grimmy from the Voice and the terribly
- 9:31Speaker 1: sad and inexplicable murder and what happened to her. It's
- 9:35Speaker 1: just it's just awful, but it's an episode worth listening to,
- 9:39Speaker 1: so check that out. We're going to hit up on
- 9:41Speaker 1: that a little bit later in the after Party here.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Coming up this weekend in the rewind slot, our classic
- 9:47Speaker 1: episode on Anthony bourdein Okay, speaking of punks who weren't punk.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Bourdain wasn't a musician either, but he was a rock star.
- 9:56Speaker 1: So I had to tell this story. And I can't
- 9:58Speaker 1: wait for you guys to hear the episode if you
- 10:00Speaker 1: have not already. It's more of a tribute than it
- 10:03Speaker 1: is an expose. But trust me, you're gonna find it revelatory.
- 10:06Speaker 1: You're gonna find it revealing in ways that you won't believe,
- 10:08Speaker 1: even if you've seen every No Reservations episode or if
- 10:12Speaker 1: you've read all of Bourdein's books. There's a lot of
- 10:14Speaker 1: meat on this bone, pun intended. Now that's coming up
- 10:17Speaker 1: on Sunday, all right, you can listen while you're getting
- 10:20Speaker 1: Sunday dinner together. Okay, you know it seems seemed to apt, right,
- 10:25Speaker 1: cook listen to the Boordain Disgrace that episode. Sunday is
- 10:28Speaker 1: my day to cook, by the way, and to listen
- 10:30Speaker 1: to stuff. I find it to be very relaxing. But
- 10:33Speaker 1: I'm getting off topic. Listen next week in our next
- 10:36Speaker 1: new episode. This one is gonna be on Weezer. That's right, Weezer.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Now what true crime is there possibly to tell about Weezer?
- 10:43Speaker 1: That's what you're asking yourself, right, now, is it Rivers
- 10:45Speaker 1: Como's belief in the algorithm? Is it his complicated relationship
- 10:50Speaker 1: with massage Parlors? What about a bass player who lived
- 10:53Speaker 1: at debauchrous rock and roll lifestyle a little too fully
- 10:57Speaker 1: all the way to an early grave. Yeah, that happened.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Or perhaps it's about a shootout with the cops. How
- 11:05Speaker 1: about it's about all of this and more. This is
- 11:07Speaker 1: the Weezer story like you've never heard it before. So
- 11:09Speaker 1: do not sleep on this upcoming new episode of Disgraceland
- 11:13Speaker 1: on Tuesday. My favorite Weezer album, by the way, is Pinkerton,
- 11:16Speaker 1: and not just because it was recorded right down the
- 11:18Speaker 1: street from the apartment I was living in at the time,
- 11:20Speaker 1: but because it is heavy, h eavy. But it was
- 11:25Speaker 1: a flop as well. Commercially it flopped, and it's probably
- 11:28Speaker 1: Rivers Cuomo's least favorite Weezer album anyway you look at it.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Pinkerton is a departure from what we've come to know
- 11:36Speaker 1: and expect Weezer to sound like. So when you're listening
- 11:39Speaker 1: to the Weezer episode of Disgraceland next week, be thinking
- 11:42Speaker 1: about what your favorite album is by a band that
- 11:45Speaker 1: is a total outlier of an album, okay, that is
- 11:48Speaker 1: totally different from anything else in their catalog albums like
- 11:52Speaker 1: Pink Floyd's Metal or Neil Young's Shocking Pinks or Paul
- 11:56Speaker 1: McCartney's Run Devil Run, Metallica's Lulu Even Let Me Know
- 12:00Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 12:02Speaker 1: That's going to be the question of the week for
- 12:04Speaker 1: next week. Voicemail and text at Disgrace Lampod on the
- 12:08Speaker 1: socials Disgrace Lampod at gmail dot com. You want to
- 12:10Speaker 1: email me, I'll be back right after this to hear
- 12:13Speaker 1: from you guys, to hear from you on text, your voicemail,
- 12:16Speaker 1: et cetera.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Back in the flash.
- 12:38Speaker 1: So I'm doing this thing where I'm doing this intermittent
- 12:42Speaker 1: fasting thing. Every day, I stop eating at like eight
- 12:45Speaker 1: o'clock at night, and I don't eat again until noon
- 12:49Speaker 1: the next day. It's now as I record this, eight
- 12:55Speaker 1: minutes to noon, it's eleven fifty two. And what happens
- 12:59Speaker 1: is typically come eleven am, I'm I'm ready to just
- 13:05Speaker 1: kill somebody. I'm so angry because I'm so hungry. But then,
- 13:10Speaker 1: you know, and then I'm gonna eat at twelve that's
- 13:12Speaker 1: the plan. But then twelve comes and my hunger goes away.
- 13:16Speaker 1: It's crazy, crazy, and I'm hitting that phase right now,
- 13:21Speaker 1: right now as we're talking. I don't know why I
- 13:23Speaker 1: thought you'd find this interesting, but I did. Anyhow, there
- 13:26Speaker 1: you have it. I'm back. I'm in the phone booth.
- 13:27Speaker 1: It's the one across the hall. You know what I'm doing,
- 13:30Speaker 1: even though I'm hungry, or maybe I'm not hungry anymore.
- 13:32Speaker 1: I can't tell. I'm hanging on the telephone. Let's hear
- 13:34Speaker 1: from you guys, All right, let's hear from D in
- 13:39Speaker 1: the two one four on You guys don't want to
- 13:41Speaker 1: talk about this, and that's fine. You want to keep
- 13:43Speaker 1: talking about the Mount Rushmore of Gone Too Soon artists.
- 13:46Speaker 1: I'm here for it. This is D's take.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Hey Jake, it's D from Dallas, and I'm getting in
- 13:52Speaker 3: with my Gone Too Soon Mount Rushmore and that is
- 13:59Speaker 3: a new winehouse. Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington and of course
- 14:06Speaker 3: Kurt Cobain. Also, have you ever done an episode on
- 14:12Speaker 3: the conspiracy theory behind the Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington
- 14:20Speaker 3: air quote suicide?
- 14:23Speaker 4: Maybe you should?
- 14:26Speaker 5: Bye?
- 14:28Speaker 1: All right? Thank you? Do you think for checking in?
- 14:29Speaker 1: Thanks for giving us your list. I haven't done anything
- 14:32Speaker 1: on the air quote end of life stuff there with
- 14:35Speaker 1: Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington. I have looked into it.
- 14:39Speaker 1: I can't find anything credible that supports the conspiracy theory.
- 14:44Speaker 1: And I know that it is kind of sort of
- 14:48Speaker 1: somewhat in a roundabout way connected to Anthony Bourdain. So
- 14:53Speaker 1: and like I said, that episode is coming up in
- 14:55Speaker 1: the rewind slot in a couple of days, and again
- 14:59Speaker 1: I looked in do it. Didn't find anything credible. If
- 15:03Speaker 1: you found anything credible, keyword credible by all means, send
- 15:07Speaker 1: it to me and I'll look at it with fresh eyes.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Thanks t all Right, let's see what Rick's doing in
- 15:12Speaker 1: three one seven.
- 15:13Speaker 6: Hey Jake, it's Rick three one seven. Love your show.
- 15:17Speaker 6: It's awesome listening to it for years. Yeah. Usually what
- 15:20Speaker 6: I'm doing is just having a cocktail and sitting back
- 15:23Speaker 6: and being informed. But keep doing what you're doing.
- 15:27Speaker 5: I was gonna ask you were going to do a
- 15:28Speaker 5: show maybe on a well larned conspiracy with John McVay,
- 15:32Speaker 5: who had ties in with Monster Magnet, ties in with
- 15:37Speaker 5: queensland Stone Age. So I don't know how much debauchery's
- 15:41Speaker 5: going on that, but uh, with those names you've got
- 15:44Speaker 5: to be souping right. All right, man, you take it easy,
- 15:47Speaker 5: Robert roll.
- 15:48Speaker 1: All right, Let's check out Scott in d five one six.
- 15:53Speaker 4: Hey, Jake, my name is Scott. I listened to every
- 15:56Speaker 4: one of year episodes. I am a quadriplegic that goes
- 16:00Speaker 4: to the Jim daily and I always just know all
- 16:02Speaker 4: your episodes. You speak so fast it took me a
- 16:05Speaker 4: while to write down your number to be typing into
- 16:08Speaker 4: my phone. I'm just saying i'd like to tell you.
- 16:11Speaker 4: One of the greatest tights films I've ever seen, and
- 16:14Speaker 4: I'm sure you've seen it, is The Italian Jump. I
- 16:17Speaker 4: wrote you a text on I want to know what
- 16:18Speaker 4: you think about it again. My name is Scott n
- 16:21Speaker 4: call him from Staten Island, New York five one six
- 16:24Speaker 4: area code. You can use my name and I can't
- 16:27Speaker 4: wait to hear the next one you drop and Gretish
- 16:31Speaker 4: caw trace movie The Blues Brothers No Doubt About It
- 16:35Speaker 4: by Jake.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Scott in the five one six Appreciate you man, good job.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I'm going to the gym every day. Jealous. I don't
- 16:43Speaker 1: have that kind of dedication, Okay, Scott, I'm sorry, dude.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I haven't seen the Italian Job. I have not seen
- 16:52Speaker 1: the original, nor have I seen the remake for the
- 16:56Speaker 1: early two thousands. Which one are you referring to?
- 16:58Speaker 2: Though?
- 16:58Speaker 1: The original? Right, guys? Scott's referencing a conversation that Zeth
- 17:03Speaker 1: and I have over in the Hollywood Land feed on.
- 17:07Speaker 1: He's talking about greatest heist movies we're recommending. We're recommending
- 17:10Speaker 1: songs that are that were heist songs. You can check
- 17:15Speaker 1: that out if you're subscribed to Hollywood Land. Sorry to
- 17:18Speaker 1: let you down here, Scott, but thank you because now
- 17:20Speaker 1: you're prompting me to watch this. Who stars in the original?
- 17:24Speaker 2: Who is it?
- 17:25Speaker 1: Is it? Uh? My guy there, Michael Kaine? I think
- 17:31Speaker 1: it is? Or am I thinking of something else? I
- 17:32Speaker 1: should look it up. I'm not going I'm gonna keep
- 17:34Speaker 1: rolling through here. Let's do some texts. We had our
- 17:37Speaker 1: Diddy episodes in the rewind slot a couple of weeks ago.
- 17:40Speaker 1: This text comes from the five to three to oh
- 17:42Speaker 1: do I believe did he did it? My logical mind says,
- 17:45Speaker 1: how could I not? I still haven't seen any evidence
- 17:47Speaker 1: that proves he didn't. He didn't proves that he didn't
- 17:51Speaker 1: do it. She hasn't seen any evidence that proves any other.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Okay, she was not to say.
- 17:55Speaker 1: All we see and hear about is the overwhelming, damning
- 17:57Speaker 1: evidence against him. So yeah, he did it. His mammoth
- 18:00Speaker 1: sized ego couldn't shut up about it. Ha ha, what
- 18:03Speaker 1: a douche. Keep up the good work, Jake. Love your podcast,
- 18:06Speaker 1: Danny C. I tend to agree with you. Last week
- 18:09Speaker 1: we were talking about this David story that's developing out
- 18:13Speaker 1: or the court cases developing out in Los Angeles, D
- 18:17Speaker 1: four VD and the seven to one to three writes
- 18:20Speaker 1: in the David episode bonus. I read the indictment and
- 18:24Speaker 1: then looked up cadaver bags on Amazon thirteen ninety nine,
- 18:28Speaker 1: and I was worried I would be on a list.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Why can you buy this without a special license? I
- 18:34Speaker 1: don't know. I don't have an answer for you there
- 18:38Speaker 1: seven one to three, but I appreciate it, and I
- 18:40Speaker 1: can't wait to tell this story. I can't wait to
- 18:42Speaker 1: this court case wraps five four to one rights in
- 18:45Speaker 1: Jake Tom from the five to four to one Here,
- 18:47Speaker 1: what do I do while listening to your podcasts? Farming,
- 18:51Speaker 1: growing vegetables and flower seeds and fresh produce for the
- 18:54Speaker 1: people here in the lovely Mountains of Southern Oregon love
- 18:57Speaker 1: the show. Rock on peace, Tom Tom, That's exciting.
- 19:03Speaker 2: You know.
- 19:03Speaker 1: I can't think of anything more heavenly than farming or gardening.
- 19:08Speaker 1: It just seems to be. It's like a fantasy of
- 19:12Speaker 1: mine to be able to do that every day, to
- 19:14Speaker 1: be completely disconnected from the technological modern aspects of life
- 19:19Speaker 1: that have their fucking talents in me twenty four to seven,
- 19:23Speaker 1: and it seems, Hey, I'm going off track here four
- 19:25Speaker 1: h five text in Hey, Disgraceland, I know I'm late.
- 19:27Speaker 1: How could you leave Randy Rhodes off the list? He
- 19:31Speaker 1: was a trained classical guitarist who was about to leave
- 19:34Speaker 1: Ozzie to pursue a career dedicated to that style of play. Yeah,
- 19:40Speaker 1: you know, And if I'm being honest, I made my
- 19:42Speaker 1: list of great Mount Rushmore guitarists pretty subjective. And Randy
- 19:46Speaker 1: Rhoads gripped me as a young child when that tribute
- 19:52Speaker 1: to Randy came out, incredible. I get in a lot
- 19:55Speaker 1: of trouble because of that album. I don't know if
- 19:57Speaker 1: I want to tell it here on this podcast, because
- 19:59Speaker 1: my kids might someday listen to this. When they're still kids,
- 20:02Speaker 1: and I don't want to hear this story, So you know,

- 23:23Speaker 1: I mentioned earlier the conversation that Zeth and I were
- 23:26Speaker 1: having about musical hes over in the Hollywood Land Feed.
- 23:31Speaker 1: This week we got into perhaps an even more interesting
- 23:36Speaker 1: musical conversation over in the Wrap Party in hollywood Land
- 23:40Speaker 1: this week when we were talking about great car music,
- 23:44Speaker 1: and that's because we get Steve McQueen happening in Hollywood
- 23:46Speaker 1: Land this week. And man, I could have talked about
- 23:50Speaker 1: this for I mean, we're supposed to come with three recommendations,
- 23:55Speaker 1: three song recommendations. I had I think seven written down,
- 24:00Speaker 1: and I could have gone. I could have kept going
- 24:03Speaker 1: something about cars and rock and roll, and a lot
- 24:06Speaker 1: of you probably don't know this. I wouldn't say I'm
- 24:08Speaker 1: a car guy, but I love cars and I love
- 24:11Speaker 1: car culture. I'm not part of a car club or
- 24:13Speaker 1: anything like that, but I was kind of part of
- 24:15Speaker 1: an unofficial one in high school with my buddies. So
- 24:18Speaker 1: this stuff is in my DNA. And any excuse I
- 24:22Speaker 1: get to talk about Jeff Tweety and Wilco's passenger Side
- 24:26Speaker 1: is a good one, Matt. Give the people a little
- 24:28Speaker 1: taste of what they might be missing if they're not
- 24:31Speaker 1: subscribed over in the Hollywood Land feed.
- 24:34Speaker 7: Paint a picture here, what's Jake Brennan teenage Jake Brennan
- 24:37Speaker 7: driving around.
- 24:37Speaker 1: In nineteen sixty eight Plymouth Barracuda straight six engine, white
- 24:44Speaker 1: red top that I bought for eight hundred bucks off,
- 24:48Speaker 1: my friend Dutch, who drove, who bought I'm sorry, who
- 24:51Speaker 1: sold me the Barracuda so that he could buy his
- 24:54Speaker 1: sixty four Dodge Dart.
- 24:57Speaker 2: We had cool.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Fucking cars, and some of it was some of it
- 25:01Speaker 1: was our own taste, and some of it was like
- 25:03Speaker 1: our dad's not mine. Well, my dad, but that was
- 25:05Speaker 1: why I had my car. Some of my friends, like
- 25:08Speaker 1: my friend Billy, his dad were at a gas station,
- 25:09Speaker 1: so he was gifted a Cherry red sixty seven Camaro
- 25:13Speaker 1: when he got his license. Bastard. We had to pay
- 25:16Speaker 1: for ours, but we had cool freaking muscle cars, and
- 25:19Speaker 1: car culture was part of our world in this small
- 25:22Speaker 1: town that we grew up in. And this song in particular,
- 25:25Speaker 1: when Ministry released Jesus Built My hot Rod, it was
- 25:29Speaker 1: like our minds exploded because it was everything. It was everything.
- 25:33Speaker 1: And I didn't know until today that that was Gibby
- 25:36Speaker 1: Haying singing that song from Butthole Surfers. Did you know that? No?
- 25:40Speaker 1: I didn't know that. I didn't know that either. Man,
- 25:42Speaker 1: I did not know that, and I thought that was
- 25:44Speaker 1: like some old movie sample at the beginning that I
- 25:47Speaker 1: just read to you. That soon I discovered that this
- 25:50Speaker 1: rock thing was true, Jerry Lewis was the devil, and
- 25:53Speaker 1: Jesus was an architect prior to his career as a prophet.
- 25:56Speaker 1: All of a sudden, I found myself in love with
- 25:59Speaker 1: the word. I think you can put that on my headstone, dude,
- 26:02Speaker 1: and it would be like perfect. This sums up everything
- 26:05Speaker 1: about me. All right, that's a Hollywoodland feed. Make sure
- 26:08Speaker 1: you're subscribed to Hollywood Land on Apple podcasts or the
- 26:11Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app or wherever you get your podcasts six one
- 26:14Speaker 1: seven nine six six six three eight. You want to
- 26:16Speaker 1: hit me up on voicemail or text Disgrace Sampod at
- 26:19Speaker 1: gmail dot com if you want to send me an
- 26:21Speaker 1: email on any of these topics that we've been discussing.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Dan Simpson writes, Hey, I think the death of Dave
- 26:28Speaker 1: Brocky of Gwar would make for a good episode. Dan,
- 26:34Speaker 1: I don't know anything about this. Nothing I know of Gwar.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Of course, I almost want to see them a couple
- 26:40Speaker 1: times with my friends, but I didn't for whatever reason.
- 26:44Speaker 1: And yeah, you're absolutely right, that would make for a
- 26:46Speaker 1: great episode. Tom g emails us what appears to be
- 26:52Speaker 1: video from inside Alistair Crowley's home is that what this
- 26:56Speaker 1: is only one of your three videos will open my
- 27:00Speaker 1: man and uh, I'm trying to put some context to this.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Hit me back, Tom, trying to piece this together. This
- 27:09Speaker 1: one comes from Peter Googer. I hope I'm pronouncing that correctly,
- 27:13Speaker 1: Peter writes in Hi, z and Jay, that's Zeth and Jake. Firstly,
- 27:17Speaker 1: thanks Zeth for the heads up on Quantum Criminals. I
- 27:21Speaker 1: didn't know about the book, so it goes without saying
- 27:22Speaker 1: that it's now on order. I also checked out John
- 27:25Speaker 1: LeMay's online store. Thanks for giving me the Albert King
- 27:28Speaker 1: rabbit hole to go down, Jake, I knew a little
- 27:30Speaker 1: about this somewhat mysterious character and self purported half brother
- 27:34Speaker 1: of BB King. I especially love the chat between you
- 27:36Speaker 1: guys on The Hunter and the appropriations the song has
- 27:40Speaker 1: been subject to led zeppein One is the album of
- 27:43Speaker 1: theirs that I've listened to the least. So I was
- 27:45Speaker 1: unaware of the directly ripped section of that Hunter song
- 27:50Speaker 1: in how many more times? If I was, I would
- 27:53Speaker 1: have recognized it immediately as Pacific Gas and Electrics version
- 27:57Speaker 1: of The Hunter. It was a minor hit here in
- 27:59Speaker 1: Austin Australia, back in nineteen sixty nine. I don't even
- 28:03Speaker 1: know about Pacific gas and electric. All right, anyways, Peter
- 28:06Speaker 1: goes on, I can actually remember listening to it on
- 28:09Speaker 1: my friend's mother's car radio. I was only tenth time,
- 28:12Speaker 1: so I didn't know about Albert King's original and certainly
- 28:14Speaker 1: wouldn't have known what a lovegun was. And then he
- 28:19Speaker 1: includes an article here on Pacific gas and electric. Peter,
- 28:22Speaker 1: thanks so much, Disgrace Lampod at gmail dot com. I
- 28:24Speaker 1: don't know anything about this version of The Hunter. I don't,
- 28:28Speaker 1: like I said, know anything about Pacific gas and electric.
- 28:31Speaker 1: But I'm excited to dig into this. Looks like they
- 28:34Speaker 1: were a inspiration on both Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page.
- 28:39Speaker 1: All from Peter's email. Thank you, Peter, Disgrace Lampod at
- 28:42Speaker 1: gmail dot com. You guys want to email me about anything,
- 28:45Speaker 1: get at me, Disgracelampod at gmail dot com. Six one
- 28:49Speaker 1: seven nine oh sixty six six three eight voicemail and
- 28:51Speaker 1: text Disgrace Lampod at Gmail at Disgrace Lampod on the socials.
- 28:55Speaker 1: All right, guys, As promised, Zeth and I are about
- 28:58Speaker 1: to get into our conversation on punk rock and Rolling

- 29:05Speaker 1: all Time, but more importantly, the mechanations behind the making
- 29:10Speaker 1: of these lists by Rolling Stone, by The New York Times,
- 29:13Speaker 1: et cetera. These lists. We've been discussing a lot here.

- 30:54Speaker 1: crime and grime. It ties them all together like you do.
- 30:56Speaker 1: And well that's a disgrace. Back on June tenth, twenty sixteen,
