- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it's the 11th of
- 0:16February and it's great to have your company.
- 0:19I hope, like me, you have been enjoying reading through the
- 0:22book of First John. Isn't it wonderful?
- 0:25Couldn't we just spend weeks listening to someone encourage
- 0:28us to be transformed by Jesus love and to show that love to
- 0:31each other? This is good stuff.
- 0:34Unfortunately, it's a brief book and today we need to wrap it up.
- 0:38And even though there are two more letters from John, we will
- 0:41save those for another time because tomorrow is a day for
- 0:44Jude. And the next week we are going
- 0:46to begin reading the book of Hosea.
- 0:48But that is next week's glorious excitement.
- 0:52This week's excitement is finishing up first, John.
- 0:55And so today I was going to say, Paul, today John wraps up this,
- 0:59this urging letter, this persuasive text that he has
- 1:03written to this community urging them to live as transformed
- 1:08people. So without further ado, let us
- 1:10read this concluding chapter together.
- 1:14First, John chapter 5. Everyone who believes that Jesus
- 1:28is the Christ has become a child of God, and everyone who loves
- 1:33the Father loves his children too.
- 1:36We know we love God's children if we love God and obey his
- 1:40commandments. Loving God means keeping his
- 1:43commandments, and His commands are not burdensome.
- 1:47For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve
- 1:51this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle
- 1:55against the world? Only those who believe that
- 1:59Jesus is the Son of God. And Jesus Christ was revealed as
- 2:04God's Son by his baptism in water and by shedding his blood
- 2:08on the cross, not by water only, but by water and blood.
- 2:14And the Spirit who is truth confirms it with his testimony.
- 2:19So we have these three witnesses, the Spirit, the
- 2:23water, and the blood, and all three agree.
- 2:27Since we believe human testimony, surely we can believe
- 2:30the greater testimony that comes from God.
- 2:34And God has testified about His Son.
- 2:37All who believe in the Son of God know in their hearts that
- 2:40this testimony is true. Those who don't believe this are
- 2:45actually calling God a liar because they don't believe what
- 2:49God has testified about His Son. And this is what God has
- 2:54testified. He has given us eternal life,
- 2:58and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life.
- 3:05Whoever does not have God's Son does not have life.
- 3:09I've written this to you who believe in the name of the Son
- 3:13of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.
- 3:17And we are confident that He hears us whenever we ask for
- 3:22anything that pleases Him. And since we know He hears us
- 3:26when we make our requests, we also know that He will give us
- 3:31what we ask for. If you see a fellow believer
- 3:35sinning in a way that does not lead to death, you should pray.
- 3:39And God will give that person life.
- 3:42But there is a sin that leads to death.
- 3:44And I'm not saying you should pray for those who are
- 3:47committed. All wicked actions are sin, but
- 3:50not every sin leads to death. We know that God's children do
- 3:55not make a practise of sinning, but God's Son holds them
- 3:59securely and the evil 1 cannot touch them.
- 4:03We know that we are children of God and that the world around us
- 4:08is under the control of the evil. 1 And we know that the Son
- 4:12of God has come, and he has given us understanding so that
- 4:17we can know the true God. And now we live in fellowship
- 4:22with the true God, because we live in fellowship with His Son,
- 4:27Jesus Christ. He is the only true God, and He
- 4:33is eternal life. Dear children, keep away from
- 4:38anything that might take God's place in your hearts.
- 4:52Thank you for this encouragement Lord, that you give us through
- 4:56these words. You inspired John to write words
- 5:00to that community at that time, but also words that echo through
- 5:04the ages to us in our lives today.
- 5:08Our Lord, I pray that our lives can be transformed by your love,
- 5:13and that our communities can be transformed by your love.
- 5:17That we would love each other, that we would keep each other
- 5:20kindly accountable to living in a different way from what this
- 5:24world promotes, but a way of grace and kindness, a way of
- 5:29inclusion and generosity, all with the knowledge that we are
- 5:35loved and forgiven. Children of the eternal loving
- 5:40God, thank you Jesus for changing everything.
- 5:46And as you have changed everything in the universe, in
- 5:48the world, I pray that our hearts are also completely
- 5:52transformed for you. So here we are offering you our
- 5:57heart. Do with it as you would, for we
- 6:00are yours and we love you. And we pray all of this in your
- 6:04name, Jesus, Amen.
