- 1:07Speaker 4: story out of Wyoming. And we're also going to talk

- 1:13Speaker 4: five millionacres forty eight millionacres of your national force is rescinded.
- 1:21Speaker 4: And since it's prime time for all the archery out
- 1:23Speaker 4: hunters out there, we've got a rout report from some
- 1:26Speaker 4: hunters who are out in the field.
- 1:28Speaker 3: And finally we're gonna lay down.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Some harsh truths and we'll check in with the crew

- 1:49Speaker 3: Been waiting for.

- 2:23Speaker 1: Randa Williams is going to do the entire tour and
- 2:26Speaker 1: a cousin Eddie bathrobe all on Christmas vacation. So there's
- 2:30Speaker 1: gonna be all sorts of fun Christmas hijinks. You don't
- 2:34Speaker 1: even know, you're crazy.
- 2:36Speaker 5: I've been practicing all of my carols, even the weird
- 2:39Speaker 5: ones that no one likes to sing.
- 2:41Speaker 3: You're gonna break out your Santa suit.
- 2:43Speaker 5: I'd like to I'd like to actually use this opportunity
- 2:45Speaker 5: to invest in a real Santa suit at this company. Well,
- 2:49Speaker 5: I feel like we have the Yeah no, but hark
- 2:53Speaker 5: the Herald Angels sing. We're just going to get into
- 2:56Speaker 5: the the deep cuts.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Going south, which is a new, new kind of part
- 3:01Speaker 4: of the country that I hit on the tours before.
- 3:03Speaker 5: I'm excited.
- 3:05Speaker 4: People were riping for a long time, so we listened
- 3:07Speaker 4: to them. Guys, are starting to feel like fall around here.
- 3:11Speaker 6: Man.
- 3:11Speaker 4: The leaves are starting to show some color, Temperatures are
- 3:14Speaker 4: cool enough, days are getting shorter.
- 3:16Speaker 3: It's hunting season. I've been out for grouse a couple
- 3:20Speaker 3: of times with my boys.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Done all right, But my first big hunt is going
- 3:27Speaker 4: to be antelope season here in like what three weeks
- 3:29Speaker 4: something like that.
- 3:30Speaker 3: We've got four tags.
- 3:32Speaker 4: It's gonna be crazy trying to fill four tags. What's
- 3:36Speaker 4: your big, first big hunt of the year, Randall.
- 3:39Speaker 5: Well, I actually got out this past weekend and we
- 3:43Speaker 5: were in some areas of Montana. We have an early rifle. Yeah, yeah,
- 3:48Speaker 5: So I went in with a buddy and we camped
- 3:51Speaker 5: together one night and then split up and kind of
- 3:53Speaker 5: looped back to the truck.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Elk or deer?
- 3:55Speaker 5: What were you after both? Elk? If it's the very
- 4:00Speaker 5: right opportunity because the logistics are difficult. But saw elk
- 4:05Speaker 5: saw a lot of deer. Actually, I was surprised and
- 4:08Speaker 5: just didn't. Yeah, but amazing to get out and amazing
- 4:15Speaker 5: to uh, you know, discover that the studs in your
- 4:20Speaker 5: binocular tripod adapter or loose, or that there's a hole
- 4:25Speaker 5: in your tense rain fly. Yeah, shaking it all out
- 4:29Speaker 5: before the weather gets dangerously cold.
- 4:32Speaker 4: It's a pretty pretty unique opportunity to carry a rifle
- 4:35Speaker 4: around for deer and no super.
- 4:36Speaker 5: Cool, super cool and yeah, like just gorgeous country. We
- 4:40Speaker 5: didn't we saw people, but we didn't talk to anybody
- 4:43Speaker 5: for four days and nice, saw some moose, saw some goats.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Cool, cal You're doing a pretty crazy hunt. Did the
- 4:54Speaker 4: company take out a life insurance policy on you before
- 4:57Speaker 4: this traditional bow round bear hunt?
- 5:00Speaker 1: Well I never thought about that, but knowing some of
- 5:02Speaker 1: the folks around here, like like I do, uh yeah,
- 5:05Speaker 1: probably probably there's there's some Vegas style Yeah, that's being
- 5:10Speaker 1: placed for sure.
- 5:11Speaker 7: Our friends.
- 5:12Speaker 3: It's fan duel first big hunt. Yeah, yeah it is.
- 5:15Speaker 1: I mean because that's a long hunt and then.
- 5:20Speaker 3: People a little about it real quick.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yeah, it's out on the Alaska peninsula and it's brown
- 5:25Speaker 1: bear and I'll be using my bow, which if you're
- 5:30Speaker 1: going to try to get a brown bear with the bow,
- 5:32Speaker 1: the fall time is up close and personal time because
- 5:36Speaker 1: they're in there on the salmon streams and the water's
- 5:38Speaker 1: rushing and stuff, and it's always windy out on the peninsula.
- 5:42Speaker 5: So it's good.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Spot in stock conditions, provided it's not too nasty, and
- 5:48Speaker 1: so you know, the the deck is as stacked in
- 5:51Speaker 1: your favor as it can be for just getting in tight.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Are you are you camping on the island? Are you?
- 5:58Speaker 3: Are you doing the boat or how's it gonna work?
- 6:01Speaker 1: Well, we're not into the islands, we're not on the ills.
- 6:05Speaker 3: That's right, You're on the keen eye.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, And it's still TBD as far as because
- 6:14Speaker 1: you know, they're just they're flying in and out there
- 6:16Speaker 1: all the time right now. So it's we're gonna figure
- 6:20Speaker 1: out the best spot to be yep and and be there.
- 6:23Speaker 1: And I'm going up a couple of days before the
- 6:25Speaker 1: season starts, and hopefully I have all those little kinks
- 6:32Speaker 1: that Randall just gave me a little bit of anxiety
- 6:34Speaker 1: with ironed out before it's it's sneaking up on Bear's time.
- 6:39Speaker 5: I'm gonna give you a little insider tip. Check your
- 6:42Speaker 5: air mattress for any slow leaks. The old hips are
- 6:47Speaker 5: a little sore.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Yeah, we got to carry tenacious tape with you, man.
- 6:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, I I uh. This is like the
- 6:54Speaker 5: first time in a long time. I was certain that
- 6:56Speaker 5: I had my my whole repair kit with me, but
- 6:59Speaker 5: for what I reason, it didn't make it in the backpack.
- 7:01Speaker 5: So it's a useful reminder. Yeah, but yeah, the hips
- 7:05Speaker 5: are sore. Started having to dig out my little hip
- 7:08Speaker 5: hole under my tent before I go to sleep.
- 7:11Speaker 4: That's a bummer when you wake up and those things
- 7:13Speaker 4: are just deflated.
- 7:14Speaker 5: It's also a bummer when it's it's been solid. I
- 7:17Speaker 5: bought it used like five years ago, patched it one
- 7:20Speaker 5: time since, and I've never had an issue. Headed out
- 7:22Speaker 5: in Yellowstone last month, no issues. I don't know really
- 7:25Speaker 5: what happened.
- 7:25Speaker 3: So and then five years you got your money's worth.
- 7:28Speaker 5: Out of it. Yeah, but I don't want to buy
- 7:30Speaker 5: a new one. Have you seen the prices these days?
- 7:33Speaker 1: They are ghastly. But the flip side of this, right,
- 7:37Speaker 1: and this is the covey of signing up for a
- 7:41Speaker 1: big hunt. Is I have not done. This is the
- 7:46Speaker 1: furthest I have ever in my entire life been into
- 7:50Speaker 1: any legal hunting season without hunting a single day. Like
- 7:54Speaker 1: I've just got all this other stuff I have got
- 7:57Speaker 1: to get done, and rap.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Much going on in the world of conservation and public lands.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Cal is too busy.
- 8:03Speaker 3: He no longer hunts.
- 8:04Speaker 1: That is a real reality. That is just like so easy.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Is right there?
- 8:12Speaker 3: Yep, it's right there.
- 8:14Speaker 1: And I've spent my entire life fighting against that type
- 8:16Speaker 1: of reality.
- 8:17Speaker 3: So start fighting for Cal so he can go hunt.
- 8:20Speaker 5: Geez, come on, I've got to lead on some sandhill cranes.
- 8:23Speaker 5: Oh lovely from the neighbor. So excellent. I've got plans
- 8:27Speaker 5: this weekend if you want to join.
- 8:28Speaker 4: All right, we talked about bears a little bit. We're
- 8:31Speaker 4: going to talk about bears some more in our first interview.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Our first guest today is Brian DeBolt. Brian works out
- 8:39Speaker 4: of Lander, Wyoming for the Wyoming Fish and Game Department
- 8:43Speaker 4: as a large corn of carnivore conflict coordinator. And the
- 8:49Speaker 4: reason I came across Brian is I read an article
- 8:53Speaker 4: just in the last couple of days about multiple black
- 8:58Speaker 4: bears that were killed by vehicles at the same location
- 9:01Speaker 4: over the course of a day or two, I think
- 9:03Speaker 4: and decide to follow up with Brian and let him
- 9:07Speaker 4: explain to us about why it happened.
- 9:10Speaker 3: We got Brian on here. He is, Yes, how's it going, Brian?
- 9:15Speaker 6: Good? Hi guys, how are you good?
- 9:17Speaker 3: Good?
- 9:17Speaker 5: Good to meet you.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Thanks for you, thanks for joining us.
- 9:21Speaker 4: Before we get into this chain reaction roadkill story, can
- 9:26Speaker 4: you give us just a little background on what you
- 9:28Speaker 4: do for Wyoming fishing game.
- 9:31Speaker 8: So, yeah, you read my title. It's a little lengthy.
- 9:35Speaker 8: Large carnivore conflict coordinator.
- 9:38Speaker 1: So you set up the fights.
- 9:43Speaker 8: Well, I try to referee him anything. So the large
- 9:49Speaker 8: carnivores in Wyoming that we deal with our black bears,
- 9:53Speaker 8: grizzly bears, mountain lions, and wolves, and whenever they come
- 9:57Speaker 8: into conflict with people is my role. Whether it's a
- 10:04Speaker 8: bear tip and over a garbage can, bear killing livestock,
- 10:10Speaker 8: you know, wolve's killing livestock, or you know, oftentimes hunters encounterbears,
- 10:20Speaker 8: you know, and shoot a bear and self defense or
- 10:24Speaker 8: maybe even a human gets injured or killed. Unfortunately, that's
- 10:29Speaker 8: my job.
- 10:30Speaker 4: I imagine you got to have a like a pretty cool
- 10:33Speaker 4: demeanor for that job, because on the one hand, you're
- 10:36Speaker 4: like looking out for people and livestock and things like that,
- 10:40Speaker 4: but you also need to like kind of keep an
- 10:44Speaker 4: eye out for the best interests of these these predator
- 10:48Speaker 4: species as well.
- 10:50Speaker 6: Well. It's uh, yeah, cool, I've never been turned.
- 10:56Speaker 8: It is an interesting dynamic and often the the people
- 10:59Speaker 8: are sometimes more difficult to deal with. You don't say
- 11:03Speaker 8: yeah as you know, so it's it's interesting, yeah, And
- 11:08Speaker 8: you can't you can't judge people beforehand by any means.
- 11:13Speaker 8: I mean, you could run into a kind of a rough,
- 11:17Speaker 8: kind of redneck, old looking fella and there's none.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Of them in Wyoming, come on.
- 11:23Speaker 8: But they they want to do everything they can to
- 11:26Speaker 8: make sure that the bear's okay, that we don't hurt it,
- 11:29Speaker 8: that we don't don't have to remove it, you know,
- 11:31Speaker 8: lethally kill it or anything. And then next door there's
- 11:34Speaker 8: a you know, in that elderly lady or something in
- 11:37Speaker 8: her nightgown, and she wants to make sure that bears
- 11:40Speaker 8: as dead as can be.
- 11:41Speaker 1: So because it tackle their bird feeder for the fifth time,
- 11:44Speaker 1: why can't that bear learn?
- 11:46Speaker 8: So you just never know it is it's an interesting
- 11:50Speaker 8: dynamic to yeah, be in the middle.
- 11:52Speaker 1: It'd be helpful if everybody had some pointy years on
- 11:55Speaker 1: both sides of their head that either stand up or
- 11:58Speaker 1: lay down.
- 12:00Speaker 6: Yeah, that we could tell a little better behavior.
- 12:05Speaker 4: So with that in mind, with what you're out there
- 12:08Speaker 4: doing every day, I gotta imagine this time of year,
- 12:14Speaker 4: bears especially like very actively trying to put on as.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Much weight as possible.
- 12:20Speaker 4: It's it's got to be very busy for you in
- 12:22Speaker 4: the conflict department, probably your busiest time of year.
- 12:26Speaker 8: It's extremely busy, and this year is no exception. Yeah,
- 12:31Speaker 8: bears are in what we call hyperphasia, just like you mentioned,
- 12:35Speaker 8: trying to gain as many calories as possible before they
- 12:39Speaker 8: go into the danding period. And so they are forging longer,
- 12:43Speaker 8: they're active longer, and with anything they can possibly put
- 12:49Speaker 8: into their gut, you know, whether it's natural or unnatural foods,
- 12:54Speaker 8: And by unnatural I mean yeah, like bird feeders and
- 12:59Speaker 8: food and and that type of stuff garbage. So, yeah,
- 13:02Speaker 8: we are extremely busy right now.
- 13:06Speaker 4: Well let's let's I'll tie that into what happened a
- 13:09Speaker 4: couple of weeks ago. Can can you just tell us,
- 13:12Speaker 4: like initially what happened, and then we'll get into why
- 13:15Speaker 4: after you kind of let us let us know what happened,
- 13:18Speaker 4: and if you want, like you can tell us where
- 13:21Speaker 4: this happened to.
- 13:23Speaker 8: Okay, so real Briefly, there's a highway goes over what's
- 13:28Speaker 8: called South Pass.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Very famous place. Well yeah, among certain circles.
- 13:34Speaker 8: It's a south south pass of the Oregon Trail and
- 13:37Speaker 8: different things over the south end of the wind River
- 13:40Speaker 8: mountains here and had lots of wildlife up there. But again,
- 13:47Speaker 8: long story short, and elk was struck and killed by
- 13:49Speaker 8: a vehicle, and in short order, within a matter of
- 13:55Speaker 8: a few days later, a sow with two what we
- 14:01Speaker 8: call cubs of the year they're were born this year,
- 14:06Speaker 8: were struck and killed right at that roadkill elk they were, Yeah,
- 14:12Speaker 8: all three struck at the same time. And lots of
- 14:16Speaker 8: traffic again on this highway, it's a pretty major thoroughfare.
- 14:21Speaker 8: And then later that was early early in the morning,
- 14:26Speaker 8: and then later that evening, uh, fourth bear was struck
- 14:30Speaker 8: and killed at the same location.
- 14:33Speaker 4: So and uh, normally you wouldn't get called into any
- 14:40Speaker 4: kind of like roadkill situation.
- 14:43Speaker 5: Correct, correct, So.
- 14:47Speaker 8: If there is an animal, let's say struck on a
- 14:50Speaker 8: on the road and it's still alive, and maybe uh,
- 14:55Speaker 8: a highway troman or a you know, a state trooper
- 14:59Speaker 8: or a sheriff's deputy or something shows up unseen and
- 15:03Speaker 8: the animal needs to be put down, you know, because
- 15:06Speaker 8: it's correctly injured. They have to call us. We have
- 15:08Speaker 8: to give them permission to do so, because we're the
- 15:10Speaker 8: authority over wildlife. But a dead critter, you know, if
- 15:15Speaker 8: something's just been struck and killed, that is not our authority,
- 15:19Speaker 8: that's the Woming Department of Transportation, because then it's just
- 15:23Speaker 8: a road hazard and it's not live wildlife anymore. So
- 15:28Speaker 8: we typically don't get calls like say, unless it's still alive.
- 15:32Speaker 4: So just for people who aren't following, an elk gets killed,
- 15:36Speaker 4: it attracts the sal with the with the young or
- 15:40Speaker 4: with a year old cubs, and later that the elks
- 15:45Speaker 4: still hasn't been removed, and it attracts another bear which
- 15:48Speaker 4: also gets killed. So what what like you got involved?
- 15:52Speaker 4: I assume at that point after that fourth bear got
- 15:56Speaker 4: killed and what happened after that?
- 15:59Speaker 8: So actually I did get involved a little earlier. I
- 16:02Speaker 8: was I was aware that the that a bull elk
- 16:06Speaker 8: had been struck and killed post impression that it was
- 16:15Speaker 8: going to be picked up. And I'm sure not criticizing anybody.
- 16:19Speaker 8: There's road killed everywhere. It just happens a lot. And
- 16:23Speaker 8: then I got a call early in the morning one
- 16:26Speaker 8: morning that these three bears had been struck. So I responded,
- 16:30Speaker 8: and sure enough, it's a sow again with a couple
- 16:33Speaker 8: of little cubs. And I gathered them up, and the
- 16:36Speaker 8: elk was still there. And again I probably would have
- 16:40Speaker 8: when I had loaded it up, but I had three
- 16:43Speaker 8: bears in the back of my truck, and I made
- 16:46Speaker 8: another wrong assumption that, well, okay, it'll be picked up now,
- 16:51Speaker 8: you know. And then that evening, right at dark, I
- 16:56Speaker 8: get a call that another bear, a bear, was struck
- 16:59Speaker 8: and killed by a vehicle, you know, mile marker fifty
- 17:02Speaker 8: five whatever, And I said, no, that happened this morning.
- 17:05Speaker 8: I told her dispatch and there they said, no, no,
- 17:08Speaker 8: the guy sitting there right now that just hit the bear.
- 17:12Speaker 8: So I went back up there, and sure as heck,
- 17:15Speaker 8: a fourth bear right there on the same spot had
- 17:18Speaker 8: been struck and the elk carcass was still there. So
- 17:22Speaker 8: I went ahead and loaded the elk carcass. That time
- 17:25Speaker 8: m hm and got it out of there. So yeah,
- 17:29Speaker 8: it's uh, you know, these kind of opportunistic I would
- 17:32Speaker 8: call him. It's an unfortunate opportunity that these critters get struck,
- 17:38Speaker 8: whether it's a coyote or you know, we get a
- 17:40Speaker 8: lot of like ravens and magpies that are on these carcases.
- 17:44Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 17:44Speaker 4: I was going to ask, is this the first time
- 17:46Speaker 4: you've seen that kind of like chain reaction roadkill event
- 17:50Speaker 4: or is it is it fairly common?
- 17:53Speaker 3: Well maybe not with bears, but.
- 17:55Speaker 8: You know, this is the biggest one I've seen. Usually
- 17:59Speaker 8: it's one kai or you know, maybe one magpie or
- 18:03Speaker 8: you know, and we have had bears struck before, but
- 18:06Speaker 8: not to this extent.
- 18:08Speaker 6: That's not this many.
- 18:10Speaker 8: This is the first time I've been you know, doing
- 18:12Speaker 8: this for twenty six years, and this is the first
- 18:15Speaker 8: time I've seen it in this this big capacity.
- 18:19Speaker 4: But I would imagine that, you know, Wyoming's got a
- 18:24Speaker 4: lot of desolate spots, even on these major highways, that
- 18:28Speaker 4: this is probably something that happens more often and we
- 18:31Speaker 4: just don't know about it, right.
- 18:34Speaker 8: That does that? That's true. That's true usually when it
- 18:37Speaker 8: is a bear, though most folks do report that we
- 18:41Speaker 8: have a few mountain lions struck in the same you know,
- 18:45Speaker 8: type of scenario, and often it's a passerby that reports it.
- 18:50Speaker 8: I think folks might be a little apprehensive, well, you know,
- 18:54Speaker 8: especially if it's a grizzly bear right there. You know,
- 18:57Speaker 8: they're an endangered species on a and uh so they're
- 19:04Speaker 8: may be reluctant to call. They think they did something wrong.
- 19:07Speaker 8: But bottom line is it's just an accident. And so
- 19:10Speaker 8: it's off on a passerby it says, hey, there's a
- 19:12Speaker 8: dead bear land on the road and we get called
- 19:15Speaker 8: to investigate that.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Can you get a salvage tag for black bear in Wyoming?
- 19:21Speaker 8: You can, yep, yep, if a if a bear is
- 19:24Speaker 8: taken legally, yeah, it can be donated there. Yeah, any
- 19:31Speaker 8: any donation of a of a grizzly bear, course i'd
- 19:33Speaker 8: have to be through the Fish and Wildlife Service. But
- 19:36Speaker 8: any other game under under the jurisdiction of the Game
- 19:38Speaker 8: and Fish you can get a salvage tag.
- 19:42Speaker 1: But not not for roadkill? Can you get it for roadkill?
- 19:46Speaker 6: So interesting?
- 19:47Speaker 8: So with roadkill, there is a new law that just
- 19:50Speaker 8: passed last year and people are allowed to pick up
- 19:54Speaker 8: most roadkill I won't get into all the details, but
- 19:58Speaker 8: basically deer, elk and aneloe, they can acquire that, they
- 20:04Speaker 8: can pick it up it. There's an app it's called
- 20:09Speaker 8: Wyoming five to one one, And if you come across
- 20:14Speaker 8: the roadkill you want to salvage it for whatever reason,
- 20:17Speaker 8: you can log onto that five to one one app
- 20:20Speaker 8: and they basically give you a salvage number and you
- 20:23Speaker 8: can take that whole carcass. Again, some animals like bears
- 20:28Speaker 8: and lions or not, you can't legally pick those up
- 20:34Speaker 8: based on that, so, but other critters you can.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Yes, I would have thought I was in like a
- 20:40Speaker 1: candid camera situation if I was trying to salvage. Yeah,
- 20:45Speaker 1: like this is is this considered baiting?
- 20:47Speaker 3: Right right? Yeah?
- 20:51Speaker 4: Brian, Uh, Wyoming has been been pretty good at building
- 20:56Speaker 4: wildlife overpasses in the last I don't know deck More
- 21:02Speaker 4: like how successful have those been in reducing roadkill at
- 21:06Speaker 4: like sites that formerly just sort of like known like
- 21:11Speaker 4: pinch points where a lot of animals were getting killed
- 21:14Speaker 4: by vehicles? Like have those overpasses like drastically reduced roadkill?
- 21:21Speaker 8: Yes, they really have. They've been so beneficial And these
- 21:26Speaker 8: things as you can imagine are multi million dollar projects.
- 21:31Speaker 8: It's a huge effort between the Game and Fish and
- 21:35Speaker 8: the you know, Department Transportation and you know local wildlife groups,
- 21:40Speaker 8: the landowners. It's it's a monumental effort, and of course
- 21:45Speaker 8: we'd like to have more, but again they're huge costly projects,
- 21:49Speaker 8: and so right now we're picking kind of the low
- 21:52Speaker 8: hanging fruit. We spent decades, you know, identifying migration corridors. Again,
- 21:58Speaker 8: these choke points you're talking about where or roadkill accidents
- 22:03Speaker 8: are very common, and we're focusing on those areas. But yeah,
- 22:06Speaker 8: we'd sure like to expand it into other areas. Absolutely,
- 22:10Speaker 8: they're they're great, They're wonderful.
- 22:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Cool.
- 22:15Speaker 4: I guess the last thing is, uh, if someone's involved
- 22:18Speaker 4: in hitting hitting an animal or they there's a you know,
- 22:23Speaker 4: maybe a big bull out like on the road dead,
- 22:26Speaker 4: like who do they call?
- 22:28Speaker 3: Who should they be calling?
- 22:30Speaker 8: Yeah, so now that this five to one one app
- 22:35Speaker 8: is available, that's probably the best thing you can even
- 22:38Speaker 8: just if you don't want to harvest that, you know,
- 22:41Speaker 8: pick up that road deal, you can just report it
- 22:45Speaker 8: and it goes to the Department of Transportation and then
- 22:49Speaker 8: the maintenance crew can you know, nose there's a carcass there,
- 22:52Speaker 8: and they can get that scavenged and eliminate that road hazard,
- 22:55Speaker 8: so you don't have this chain reaction thing going on.
- 22:59Speaker 8: So that's that's a great cool. Yeah, great tool to
- 23:03Speaker 8: do that, or just called you know why dot whatever.
- 23:07Speaker 8: But one thing I feel kind of compelled to mention
- 23:10Speaker 8: too is especially with bears, because that's what I deal
- 23:14Speaker 8: with more often than anything. You know, we have some
- 23:20Speaker 8: some highways and everybody's familiar probably with Bear three ninety
- 23:24Speaker 8: nine that was struck and killed on the highway in Wyoming,
- 23:28Speaker 8: and she's darn sure not the first bear. There's been
- 23:32Speaker 8: multiple grizzly bears these roadside I call them habituated roadside
- 23:36Speaker 8: grizzly bears that have been killed along these highways. And
- 23:42Speaker 8: part of what contributes to that is is frankly, people
- 23:45Speaker 8: feeding these bears. And it's not good like say, a
- 23:50Speaker 8: roadkill that maybe's being scavenged by a bear and then
- 23:55Speaker 8: unfortunately a driver comes along and yeah, they don't see
- 23:59Speaker 8: this dark black bear in the middle of the road
- 24:02Speaker 8: in the middle of the night, and they strike it.
- 24:05Speaker 8: That's an accident. But when when people are actively feeding
- 24:08Speaker 8: these bears and and oftentimes it's just to get a photograph.
- 24:12Speaker 8: They don't realize how they're habituating these bears to the
- 24:16Speaker 8: roadside and increasing that opportunity for them to get struck
- 24:20Speaker 8: and killed or a person or a person Yeah, all
- 24:24Speaker 8: the Yeah, you know, family, you know, somebody vacationing from
- 24:30Speaker 8: a you know, different location and they come through Wyoming
- 24:34Speaker 8: or Montana and oh there's a bear off the road
- 24:37Speaker 8: and they clamber out. They pull over and clamber out
- 24:40Speaker 8: to get a picture. And you know, there could be
- 24:42Speaker 8: a semi truck or a delivery truck zipping down the
- 24:45Speaker 8: road at you know, high speeds, not looking for wildlife.
- 24:49Speaker 8: They got a job to do, and yeah, it could
- 24:51Speaker 8: cause a traffic accident or even hit a human. So yeah,
- 24:56Speaker 8: that's that's another big part of this, and that three
- 25:00Speaker 8: ninety nine bear and others do live a considerable amount
- 25:05Speaker 8: of their life roadside and that's not good. They're just
- 25:09Speaker 8: not living the wild natural life. And it was just
- 25:14Speaker 8: a matter of time, you know, before she was struck
- 25:16Speaker 8: and killed on the highway, because yeah, that just happens.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Yeah, but if she didn't live there, you couldn't take
- 25:22Speaker 1: pictures of her.
- 25:25Speaker 8: Yep, And you couldn't make the money and post it
- 25:27Speaker 8: on your Yeah, yeah, it's all about money, that's right.
- 25:31Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 25:31Speaker 1: And just to doccupile on here, it's not the bear's fault.
- 25:36Speaker 1: It's eating your bird seed. It's your fault for leaving
- 25:40Speaker 1: the bird seed out to get eight, So put it away.
- 25:44Speaker 3: That's right, exactly.
- 25:45Speaker 8: That's a good point. Cal I appreciate that. You know,
- 25:48Speaker 8: we work so hard with not only this roadkill stuff,
- 25:50Speaker 8: to try to prevent the accident from happening in the
- 25:53Speaker 8: first place. So much of our work is trying to
- 25:56Speaker 8: show people how to Yeah, you can feed birds, have
- 25:59Speaker 8: it at your house, but there's ways to do it
- 26:01Speaker 8: that the bears can't get to it. You know, if
- 26:03Speaker 8: you can't have chickens, you know, electric fences, you know
- 26:07Speaker 8: your grain, horse grain and stuff, put it away at night,
- 26:10Speaker 8: garbage put you know, secure it all away from a bear.
- 26:13Speaker 8: So we work so hard to prevent all these unnecessarily
- 26:18Speaker 8: deaths in the first place.
- 26:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:20Speaker 1: And if you leave a dirty campsite, even if it's
- 26:23Speaker 1: all that biodegradable material, watermelon rinds, stuff like that, Uh,
- 26:29Speaker 1: you're just letting bears know that people leave good things behind,
- 26:33Speaker 1: So pack it out. With you.
- 26:36Speaker 6: Free meal. Yep.
- 26:37Speaker 4: Okay, Brian, thanks a lot for joining us. It is
- 26:40Speaker 4: a great talk, interesting stuff. Maybe we we'll check back
- 26:44Speaker 4: in with you about about this kind of same issue
- 26:47Speaker 4: or something else that you're involved with at a later time.
- 26:51Speaker 6: Excellent. No, yeah, I appreciate you having me. Thank you
- 26:54Speaker 6: very much.
- 26:54Speaker 5: Thanks.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Have a good season, neither, well.
- 26:59Speaker 4: I guess yes, Randall's been out el hunting, but poor
- 27:02Speaker 4: Cal hasn't. But we're gonna move.
- 27:05Speaker 3: On to our rut report.
- 27:10Speaker 1: I remember that sound.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Oh it's beautiful. Okay.
- 27:18Speaker 4: This is the week in September that pretty much every
- 27:21Speaker 4: archery elk hunter who hasn't tagged out has been waiting for.
- 27:24Speaker 4: It's the peak breeding period for elk, and the ideally,
- 27:29Speaker 4: you know, the bulls should be screaming their heads off
- 27:31Speaker 4: and you hit the call and they come running in.
- 27:33Speaker 4: It's not always the way it works. But we're gonna
- 27:37Speaker 4: check in with with some hunters we know who are
- 27:39Speaker 4: out there hunting now. We're out hunting recently, just to
- 27:43Speaker 4: see if the action's been hot where they're hunting.
- 27:48Speaker 10: Hey, guys, it's Corey Culkin's coming at you with a
- 27:52Speaker 10: Montana rut report for Wednesday September seventeenth, hopefully close. I'm
- 27:59Speaker 10: in south west Montana. This is day five of an
- 28:02Speaker 10: eight day elk hunt, and it's been pretty slow, to
- 28:05Speaker 10: say the least.
- 28:08Speaker 5: The rut activity, that is.
- 28:10Speaker 10: Elk have been pretty quiet, very nocturnal, hearing them in
- 28:13Speaker 10: the dark moving in and out of our little hunting area.
- 28:17Speaker 10: But it's also been pretty crowded too. Here in a
- 28:21Speaker 10: lot of dug fluty bugles from the ridgetops everywhere, and
- 28:25Speaker 10: I don't know if that's keeping the elk quiet, But
- 28:28Speaker 10: few people that I've ran into have agreed that it's
- 28:31Speaker 10: been pretty slow. Excuse me, pretty slow, So I don't
- 28:36Speaker 10: think it's just me hunted numerous different locations, different drainages,
- 28:42Speaker 10: driven an hour each direction from my camp, trying to
- 28:46Speaker 10: find hot cows and bugle and elk. And it's been
- 28:49Speaker 10: quiet in the general vicinity that I'm in. But the
- 28:52Speaker 10: weather's been inconsistent. It's been raining every other day. It
- 28:58Speaker 10: hasn't froze yet either, which I've always found that first
- 29:01Speaker 10: frost of the year really gets them going. And it
- 29:03Speaker 10: still hasn't gotten that cold yet at least here, so
- 29:07Speaker 10: we got pretty consistent weather The next few days really
- 29:10Speaker 10: hoping things pick up starting this afternoon because we only
- 29:12Speaker 10: have two and a half more days on this little
- 29:15Speaker 10: journey and I won't be able to hunt again into October.
- 29:18Speaker 10: So hoping we can pull it off.
- 29:21Speaker 11: And yeah, good.
- 29:22Speaker 10: Luck to everybody out there, and back to you guys
- 29:25Speaker 10: in the studio.
- 29:27Speaker 11: That was real down Durham here with Philips game calls,
- 29:30Speaker 11: just wrapping up an elk hunt from last week. Man,
- 29:34Speaker 11: we faced tough conditions with full moon and warm weather,
- 29:39Speaker 11: and then it kind of turned. We got a bunch
- 29:41Speaker 11: of storms that kind of rolled in and that was
- 29:43Speaker 11: really nice, got a big cool down, but then we
- 29:46Speaker 11: still had that full moon. We were fighting and it
- 29:48Speaker 11: seemed like bulls were just pretty tight lips still. But
- 29:51Speaker 11: around the tenth things kind of turned. Bull started piping
- 29:56Speaker 11: off a little bit in the mornings, and on the
- 29:59Speaker 11: eleven Son Austin kill a nice bull, call him right in.
- 30:03Speaker 11: And then the twelve, thirteen, fourteenth, things are really starting
- 30:08Speaker 11: to pick up. So I feel like we might have
- 30:11Speaker 11: missed the really good calling action because it was kind
- 30:14Speaker 11: of tough there early. So anyway, everybody get out there
- 30:17Speaker 11: take advantage of this time. I think the bulls should
- 30:20Speaker 11: be ripping here for the next week and a half
- 30:21Speaker 11: two weeks and should be some big bulls hitting the dirt.
- 30:26Speaker 11: Good luck out.
- 30:27Speaker 12: There, Hey, guys, coming to you from central Colorado, right
- 30:33Speaker 12: in the middle of muzzleloader season. We're out here looking
- 30:35Speaker 12: for some elk in the past few days, checking out
- 30:39Speaker 12: another zone today. He might be able to hear it.
- 30:44Speaker 12: Behind me, there's a spring with some running water. You
- 30:46Speaker 12: can kind of see the aspens are starting to turn.
- 30:50Speaker 12: Had some good sign did hear some bugles a couple
- 30:53Speaker 12: of days ago, but haven't gotten close yet. The weather's
- 30:58Speaker 12: been good, good fall weather, plenty of rain, and we
- 31:03Speaker 12: actually had some some snow at about eleven thousand feet
- 31:06Speaker 12: as well, and it got down to about forty degrees
- 31:10Speaker 12: the last couple of nights, so we're hoping that gets
- 31:12Speaker 12: them fired up. So it's been fun checking out these zones.
- 31:15Speaker 12: This time of year. It's a nice time to be out.
- 31:17Speaker 12: So looking forward to the rest of the week and
- 31:19Speaker 12: we'll keep you posted.
- 31:20Speaker 5: Good luck everybody.
- 31:23Speaker 3: Hey, what's up, guys.
- 31:24Speaker 13: This is Logan here with the Reut report coming out
- 31:27Speaker 13: of southwest Montana. Things are definitely shaping up to be
- 31:31Speaker 13: a great couple of weeks out hunting as we head
- 31:33Speaker 13: into the third week of September in the place that
- 31:38Speaker 13: we've been hunting. The opening weekend, things were pretty slow.
- 31:41Speaker 13: We didn't hear too many elk bugling. We saw a
- 31:44Speaker 13: lot of cows, but most of the bulls seemed to
- 31:47Speaker 13: be in their summer range and hadn't came down to
- 31:51Speaker 13: try to breed cows yet. You know, this past weekend
- 31:55Speaker 13: things were starting to pick up. We heard a lot
- 31:58Speaker 13: more elk vocalizations elk rebublin at night, later into the morning.
- 32:03Speaker 13: We're able to call bulls in on Saturday, and we've
- 32:06Speaker 13: heard them talking all Sunday. So this this next week
- 32:11Speaker 13: should be even better. The fall equinox is on September
- 32:14Speaker 13: twenty second this year, which is typically corresponds with the
- 32:18Speaker 13: peak rut, and cows are coming into heat around that
- 32:22Speaker 13: time period. So typically the five or ten days before
- 32:27Speaker 13: and after the fall equinox or the peak rut, you're
- 32:30Speaker 13: going to have a lot of rutting behavior, which will
- 32:35Speaker 13: make elk much more susceptible to calling.
- 32:38Speaker 7: Bulls are going to be fired up.
- 32:41Speaker 3: You know.
- 32:41Speaker 13: It's just a great experience to be in the woods
- 32:43Speaker 13: and here elk bugling. So this is the perfect time
- 32:46Speaker 13: of year to do that, especially these next couple weeks.
- 32:49Speaker 13: So you know, in southwest Montana, we've got some cooler weather.
- 32:55Speaker 7: It's not too hot.
- 32:56Speaker 13: The new moon's approaching, so the nights are going to
- 32:59Speaker 13: be dark, the days are going to be relatively cool,
- 33:02Speaker 13: and those are all the perfect conditions for all county.
- 33:06Speaker 13: So I am very much looking forward to getting back
- 33:09Speaker 13: out there. I hope you guys are too. I've got
- 33:11Speaker 13: a hunting trip plans. You're in for a good however
- 33:14Speaker 13: long you're going to be out there for, and yeah,
- 33:19Speaker 13: can't wait to get back out. I hope you guys
- 33:20Speaker 13: are having fun and.
- 33:23Speaker 5: Good luck out there.
- 33:26Speaker 14: Jason Phelps with Phelps Game Calls, calling in for a
- 33:28Speaker 14: quick Elk Woods Rutt report. I've been in Northern Utah
- 33:31Speaker 14: hunting since the eighth of September. It's now the thirteenth
- 33:34Speaker 14: of September, and kind of what we've seen, we've had
- 33:37Speaker 14: some good days, but it's just not quite cranking yet.
- 33:41Speaker 14: Some of the bigger bulls are still leaving their cows,
- 33:43Speaker 14: you know, in the morning, to go bed separately. Still,
- 33:46Speaker 14: so it just kind of lets you know that things
- 33:48Speaker 14: aren't really happening. We have got on some herds where
- 33:50Speaker 14: some cows have been an estris, and you've heard bulls
- 33:52Speaker 14: glunking and really trailing you know, specific cows. But overall,
- 33:56Speaker 14: I feel like it's just kind of getting going. I
- 33:58Speaker 14: would say in the next day or two, you know,
- 34:01Speaker 14: maybe some cold weather snap in there, but I would
- 34:03Speaker 14: say by the fifteenth, sixteenth, things are heating up to
- 34:05Speaker 14: really be going. But that's my rut report from northern Utah.
- 34:10Speaker 14: Things are just getting ready to be going. And I would,
- 34:12Speaker 14: if I had to guess, the fifteenth to thirtieth is
- 34:15Speaker 14: going to be on fire. Take care of Good luck
- 34:18Speaker 14: to all you out there, and good luck in Elk Woods.
- 34:22Speaker 1: Our audience here asked to decide if any of those
- 34:24Speaker 1: people are you know, worth listening to in the first.
- 34:28Speaker 3: Player full of Shit, Yeah, exactly, exactly.
- 34:32Speaker 5: Corey looks like he is on day five. Okay, day hut.
- 34:36Speaker 4: Those reports just just make even angrier that you're not
- 34:39Speaker 4: out there right now.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Cal oh no, no, I would love love to be
- 34:45Speaker 1: out there, but I always I have always done a
- 34:49Speaker 1: heck of a lot better. If I didn't listen to
- 34:51Speaker 1: any of that type of stuff and you just went hunting,
- 34:53Speaker 1: you just gotta go hh. Yeah, I agree with that.
- 34:57Speaker 1: I mean they're they're pretty consistent reports. You yeah things
- 35:01Speaker 1: right now is the time?
- 35:02Speaker 11: Right?
- 35:02Speaker 5: Sure?
- 35:03Speaker 1: I do. Uh the throwing out the equinox as fact, well,
- 35:10Speaker 1: it's like, you know, fall equinox happens, and the activity
- 35:14Speaker 1: has to peek around that, you.
- 35:15Speaker 3: Know, because some people would say that about the moon too.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:19Speaker 5: Although I'm inclined to listen to Logan because he filled
- 35:23Speaker 5: every single tag that he had in Montana last year. Yeah, man,
- 35:27Speaker 5: I think the only guy in the office that I.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Think Logan is fantastic. He's a fellow third floor office mate.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Last year was his first.
- 35:38Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, exactly.
- 35:41Speaker 5: Oh, come on, I'm not I'm just sad.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Context.
- 35:47Speaker 4: All right, it's time for some listener feedback. Give us
- 35:50Speaker 4: some juicy, juicy stuff, phil important questions, hot takes, grumpy people,
- 35:55Speaker 4: happy people, lay it on us.
- 35:56Speaker 7: Sure, this is from Spicy Nachos. I have an ethical
- 35:59Speaker 7: question for you. I would out elk hunting last week
- 36:01Speaker 7: and came across a cow with a severely broken leg.
- 36:03Speaker 7: The kicker is that she had a calf with her
- 36:06Speaker 7: in a wolf dense area. Would to take the cow? Well,
- 36:10Speaker 7: there's some typos in there. But I don't know if
- 36:11Speaker 7: you guys can put to put together a.
- 36:15Speaker 4: Like, I don't know that that's like it's not ethical.
- 36:19Speaker 4: I don't think it's unethical to not shoot her. I
- 36:22Speaker 4: don't know about you guys, but I also think there's
- 36:24Speaker 4: no problem with shooting her.
- 36:28Speaker 3: Yeah, you know there's.
- 36:30Speaker 1: You can't assume with wild legs. Yeah, I've seen uh
- 36:35Speaker 1: way back when the first dude I guided with, he
- 36:41Speaker 1: had a three legged dough that had you know, noticeable limp,
- 36:45Speaker 1: And every set of clients who had a dough tag
- 36:48Speaker 1: was like, well, it'd probably be better if I had
- 36:50Speaker 1: killed her, and you know, we'd be like, yeah, cool,
- 36:54Speaker 1: make a stock. And this this old gal was cagy.
- 36:57Speaker 1: But the truth was, I mean she was there for
- 37:02Speaker 1: five years, twins.
- 37:05Speaker 4: And there was this dough that lived like near my
- 37:09Speaker 4: buddy's house where we used to hunt. There was a
- 37:11Speaker 4: dough we called Peggy and she was around for almost
- 37:15Speaker 4: three years.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Because she reminded you of your aunt.
- 37:17Speaker 3: Because she was missing a leg.
- 37:19Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I will say this past weekend at our
- 37:24Speaker 5: first camp on the Glassy Knob, the first thing we
- 37:27Speaker 5: saw was a bull moose and we're like, that's not
- 37:30Speaker 5: what I thought the first thing we see on this
- 37:32Speaker 5: trip would be, and that that moose had I don't
- 37:37Speaker 5: know if it's a broken leg or some kind of growth,
- 37:39Speaker 5: but its back left leg was swollen up like the
- 37:42Speaker 5: size of a basketball, and it was kind of dragging
- 37:44Speaker 5: it and it fell or almost fell a couple of
- 37:47Speaker 5: times just trying to step over things. And god, it
- 37:50Speaker 5: was hard to watch. But I you know, it's like
- 37:54Speaker 5: if it's it's one thing, if you have a tag, right,
- 37:56Speaker 5: and it's like, that's an animal. If you're after a
- 37:58Speaker 5: cow elk it's got a broken leg, I think that
- 38:01Speaker 5: calf is going to be fine.
- 38:02Speaker 1: Well, I mean the opposite of that, right, is like
- 38:05Speaker 1: that cow has proven to be a successful adult breeding animal.
- 38:13Speaker 1: She is expending energy to keep that calf around. If
- 38:20Speaker 1: you're really thinking about her health, I'd kill the calf.
- 38:24Speaker 1: That way. Mom gets to focus on herself and she's
- 38:27Speaker 1: got the survival instincts. Mathematically, that calf is probably is
- 38:32Speaker 1: voted the most likely to die. Yeah for being an idiot.
- 38:35Speaker 4: And listen, if you're going to decide to shoot an
- 38:38Speaker 4: animal that's injured like that, you're you know, you got
- 38:42Speaker 4: to own up to it.
- 38:43Speaker 3: If you cut that thing open and that whole hind
- 38:45Speaker 3: quarter is green and smelly.
- 38:47Speaker 5: Right, yeah, yeah, that's your tag.
- 38:50Speaker 4: I don't think there's a right or wrong answer for that.
- 38:53Speaker 4: Like if if it makes you feel good to kill her,
- 38:55Speaker 4: kill her. If not, like, go fill your tag with
- 38:57Speaker 4: another animal.
- 39:00Speaker 1: And don't assume.
- 39:01Speaker 7: Logan came in to clarify that he killed those elk
- 39:04Speaker 7: with a bow, so he just wants to. He also
- 39:08Speaker 7: says he's killed elk before that, but I don't know
- 39:10Speaker 7: what he's referring.
- 39:11Speaker 5: I got your logan last year was his first archery elk,
- 39:14Speaker 5: but he's killed other elk.
- 39:16Speaker 7: M This is a big question, but I don't think
- 39:18Speaker 7: it's something we've tackled before on any podcast I've been
- 39:21Speaker 7: a part of.
- 39:21Speaker 5: Oh Jesus.
- 39:22Speaker 7: This is from Ethan Blair. What was your worst hunting
- 39:25Speaker 7: or fishing trip? And why is anything the first thing
- 39:29Speaker 7: that pops into your head?
- 39:31Speaker 5: Mmm.
- 39:33Speaker 1: I'll just tell you, like bad attitudes in camp. We
- 39:36Speaker 1: used to call him the camp cancer and the you
- 39:41Speaker 1: can be on for all reasonable people, it would be
- 39:47Speaker 1: like the worst trip ever. But if everybody on the
- 39:51Speaker 1: worst trip ever has a good attitude, it's still like
- 39:55Speaker 1: an enjoyable time.
- 39:57Speaker 4: I'm trying, I'm trying really hard to think of a
- 40:00Speaker 4: trip where I was like, God, in hindsight, that was horrible.
- 40:03Speaker 4: But a lot of times the horrible trips you look
- 40:06Speaker 4: back and you're like, that was okay, that was fun, Like.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Exactly, that's an adventure.
- 40:11Speaker 5: I have a bad one for my dad when we
- 40:14Speaker 5: went to the Boundary Waters. One of the times we
- 40:17Speaker 5: went to the Boundary Waters, well, he got he got
- 40:21Speaker 5: the treble hook. He got a treble hook, one rock
- 40:24Speaker 5: in each finger, and we busted that out. Then he
- 40:28Speaker 5: was throwing a bear bag or a bear hang over
- 40:32Speaker 5: over a limb, sort of standing on a steep cut bank,
- 40:35Speaker 5: and he fell down the cup bank. You know, his
- 40:39Speaker 5: momentum throwing the throwing the rock took him down the
- 40:42Speaker 5: cup bank. And and that was the same day as
- 40:45Speaker 5: the fishing hook. And then the next day he and
- 40:47Speaker 5: the other guy that was in his canoe capsized in
- 40:50Speaker 5: the middle of a giant lake. A great story. Oh
- 40:53Speaker 5: and he got bit by a spider. And so when
- 40:55Speaker 5: we got back to Ely, they took him into Duluth
- 40:58Speaker 5: because they thought it might have been brown recluse, and
- 41:01Speaker 5: he was. It was like the wound was opening up,
- 41:03Speaker 5: and I was just like, man, that's.
- 41:05Speaker 3: A rough day.
- 41:06Speaker 5: That's a rough that's a rough little trip for one guy.
- 41:08Speaker 5: But that was a great trip for me.
- 41:10Speaker 1: I would rather be on a bad trip with great
- 41:13Speaker 1: attitudes than a great trip with bad attitudes.
- 41:16Speaker 3: Totally, totally, completely.
- 41:18Speaker 7: I'll do a couple more here. That was from Ethan
- 41:20Speaker 7: by the way, this one's this one's fun. I think
- 41:23Speaker 7: this is from Michael. Question for the crew, what coworker
- 41:26Speaker 7: would each of you pick to hunt hunt with for
- 41:28Speaker 7: white tail, elk, and black bear? And I encourage hurting
- 41:32Speaker 7: each other's feelings too.
- 41:37Speaker 3: I don't hunt with like the whole crew for any
- 41:40Speaker 3: of them.
- 41:40Speaker 7: No, you can't say that you gotta pick one.
- 41:42Speaker 3: fIF one for each species.
- 41:44Speaker 5: Sure, Yeah, for white tail, I would say either Mark
- 41:51Speaker 5: or Spencer. Sure, based on based on improving my odds
- 41:56Speaker 5: of success.
- 41:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I'd want Jason Fellis to guide me for.
- 41:59Speaker 5: Elk, yep, and then black bear. Maybe Corey Caulkins.
- 42:04Speaker 3: Yeah, he kills a nice one every year.
- 42:05Speaker 5: Wouldn't be honest? This is kind of ruthless. Well, well,
- 42:12Speaker 5: I mean he seems to have a lot of long,
- 42:14Speaker 5: lonely hikes in the spring, yes, Uh, this is ruthless.
- 42:18Speaker 1: I would love with uh Dirk because I haven't got
- 42:25Speaker 1: a l hunt with him. Jason Phelps is very fun
- 42:30Speaker 1: dude to hunt with, like like just just fun. And
- 42:34Speaker 1: when we hunted the other night that was killed anything
- 42:36Speaker 1: it was. It was a fantastic trip. And I would
- 42:44Speaker 1: rather go white tail hunting with Mark Kenyon over Tony
- 42:49Speaker 1: Peterson purely for you know what, maybe I retract.
- 42:55Speaker 5: That you know what you know you still haven't say
- 43:00Speaker 5: is Clay for black bear?
- 43:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna say Spencer new Heart for whitetail? Yeah, because
- 43:05Speaker 1: I know I would just bug the living shit out
- 43:07Speaker 1: of it and it would be very entertaining the whole time.
- 43:10Speaker 3: You'd be like, God, forget these white tails. I'm gonna
- 43:13Speaker 3: go look for a mule.
- 43:14Speaker 5: Do I've gone to Well, I guess I have black
- 43:17Speaker 5: bear hunted with Clay, but I'd love to sit in
- 43:20Speaker 5: a tree stand over bait with Clay just to see
- 43:22Speaker 5: him watch bears, because I've gone to the zoo with
- 43:25Speaker 5: Clay and watched bears at the zoo with Clay and
- 43:27Speaker 5: that was fun.
- 43:28Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 43:28Speaker 3: He was like, yeah, that would be very entertaining.
- 43:32Speaker 7: Okay, I'll save the rest of later. No, Phil, you're
- 43:35Speaker 7: doing great, Okay, thanks, we'll do one. Mores is from Noah.
- 43:37Speaker 7: Question for Randall on a scale from one to ten,
- 43:38Speaker 7: how bummed are you that you missed the D and
- 43:40Speaker 7: D session?
- 43:40Speaker 5: Honestly, I'm sick to my stomach.
- 43:42Speaker 7: I was too. I was devastated when I can't.
- 43:45Speaker 5: Believe Spencer lined it up in that way. I made
- 43:48Speaker 5: my availability clear, uh and and yeah, it's just enough.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Asked him why you weren't there, and he said you
- 43:55Speaker 3: weren't available?
- 43:56Speaker 5: Yeah, I was country.
- 43:58Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 43:59Speaker 7: I saw Randall declined the invite, and I sent him
- 44:01Speaker 7: a text saying, you're going to miss miss the session.
- 44:03Speaker 3: I was trying to well.
- 44:05Speaker 5: I didn't even realize it was D and D. I
- 44:06Speaker 5: thought it was just gonna be feel trivial, nobody.
- 44:09Speaker 7: The only two people that knew it was happening were
- 44:11Speaker 7: my wife and Spencer's wife.
- 44:13Speaker 5: So I still don't think I understand what D and
- 44:15Speaker 5: D is, But it seemed.
- 44:20Speaker 1: I hopefully Phil, you were you were pleased with our
- 44:24Speaker 1: ability to adapt. It was hard at FT. I was like,
- 44:27Speaker 1: I was so confused, what was going I tried to.
- 44:30Speaker 7: Ease you into it, and you guys did did so well.
- 44:33Speaker 7: There were even people that messaged me saying, I'm so
- 44:35Speaker 7: glad Brody and cal were game to play, because I
- 44:38Speaker 7: thought they would just turn their nose up at it.
- 44:39Speaker 7: And I I had that worry too, which is why
- 44:42Speaker 7: I invited Shelby to bring some enthusiasm into the room
- 44:45Speaker 7: in case you guys just walked out on me.
- 44:47Speaker 1: I just didn't understand. I was like, I was waiting
- 44:50Speaker 1: for like a formal like rule thing. Okay, and now
- 44:53Speaker 1: this is how you play the game. I was like, I, yeah,
- 44:58Speaker 1: you guys didn't need that. It was hard you got Yeah,
- 45:00Speaker 1: he did great, it was a lot of fun.
- 45:03Speaker 4: You'll have to develop a new campaign that campaigns what
- 45:06Speaker 4: it's called, right Phil. That's right, Brody, we'll do a
- 45:08Speaker 4: new campaign sometimes sounds good.
- 45:11Speaker 7: Cool. All right, that's it for now, Phil, For now
- 45:14Speaker 7: we go. We'll save some more for the end of
- 45:15Speaker 7: the show. So all right, keep sending him in.
- 45:18Speaker 3: We got another interview coming up.
- 45:20Speaker 4: Next up, we've got Chris Hill, who is the CEO
- 45:22Speaker 4: of the Conservation Lands Foundation. She'll be joining us from Alaska.
- 45:27Speaker 4: CLF is the only organization dedicated to the conservation and
- 45:31Speaker 4: expansion of national conservation lands, which she'll have to explain
- 45:37Speaker 4: a little bit, which currently total about thirty eight million acres,
- 45:41Speaker 4: And I'm gonna let Cal handle this one because he'll
- 45:45Speaker 4: do a better job than me.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Yeah, Chris and I are internet friends.
- 45:49Speaker 5: Yeah, welcome Chris.
- 45:53Speaker 1: I just say that because we haven't met in person ever.
- 45:56Speaker 1: As this world goes, Yes, how are you Chris Hill?
- 46:00Speaker 15: Great? How are you guys doing things? For having me?
- 46:02Speaker 1: And where are you today?
- 46:05Speaker 16: I am in Haynes, Alaska, which is southeast Alaska, and
- 46:10Speaker 16: it's the first day in four days that it hasn't rained,
- 46:13Speaker 16: so it's really nice out.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Do you would you mind hitting us with a quick
- 46:18Speaker 1: Southeast Alaska hunt fish report? Have you been doing anything fun?
- 46:22Speaker 5: Oh?
- 46:23Speaker 16: Yeah, so you know this is this is the best
- 46:26Speaker 16: time I think to be in Southeast Alaska because it's
- 46:28Speaker 16: co host season so.
- 46:31Speaker 15: And Coho is probably my one of my favorite fish
- 46:34Speaker 15: too to fish for. So they're here. The derby started.
- 46:40Speaker 16: I gotta I gotta keep my championship up and win
- 46:44Speaker 16: the derby again this year.
- 46:46Speaker 5: Oh wow, you're the returning champ.
- 46:48Speaker 16: I am the returning champ on the fly only.
- 46:52Speaker 5: Still nonetheless.
- 46:54Speaker 15: Yeah, it's fun, it's a lot, it's really fun.
- 46:56Speaker 16: And we just got back from a trip to Yakutat
- 47:00Speaker 16: to go surfing and fishing, and we did a little
- 47:04Speaker 16: fish a couple of days on the Sea Tuck to.
- 47:06Speaker 15: Fish for coho and it was just fantastic.
- 47:10Speaker 1: And steelhead fishery too, right they do.
- 47:14Speaker 16: Yeah, so sea took the Sea Tuck is a really
- 47:17Speaker 16: awesome river. It's in the Tongas and it's home to
- 47:20Speaker 16: all five she sees a Pacific salmon and has a
- 47:23Speaker 16: healthy steelhead run. So it's it was, It was really amazing.
- 47:29Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 47:30Speaker 1: Heck yeah, Well, since you said the magic word tongus,
- 47:33Speaker 1: would would you like to really this is your time, Chris.
- 47:38Speaker 1: But we have lots of things happening all at once
- 47:43Speaker 1: in the conservation landscape. What are you and clf uh
- 47:50Speaker 1: working on the most? What's what's your number one item
- 47:53Speaker 1: to tackle?
- 47:55Speaker 15: Oh that's that's a hard one. So because there's just
- 47:59Speaker 15: so many things.
- 48:00Speaker 16: So Conservation Lands Foundation represents this broad, nonpartisan national network
- 48:06Speaker 16: of community leaders that are solely focused on the lands
- 48:11Speaker 16: from BLM. We're focused on expanding, protecting, and restoring those
- 48:15Speaker 16: lands at BLM. And you know, as you guys know,
- 48:17Speaker 16: BLM is the has the largest amount of the country's
- 48:22Speaker 16: public lands at two hundred and forty five million acres,
- 48:25Speaker 16: and just in comparison, that's larger than the Forest Service
- 48:28Speaker 16: and probably three times.
- 48:30Speaker 15: Larger than the National Park Service.
- 48:31Speaker 16: So these are all those lands in between the National
- 48:34Speaker 16: Park Service, and we work with over eighty community led
- 48:39Speaker 16: land conservation organizations across the West and really do it
- 48:43Speaker 16: in this sort of community based advocacy model where investing
- 48:48Speaker 16: in local leaders to protect their lands has really proven
- 48:51Speaker 16: to be one of.
- 48:52Speaker 15: The most effective strategies.
- 48:53Speaker 16: So, you know, really as we look at sort of
- 48:58Speaker 16: the onslaught of all of the things that are happening
- 49:02Speaker 16: and all of the attacks that are happening on public lands,
- 49:05Speaker 16: the idea that we want to privatize these places is
- 49:09Speaker 16: still incredibly unpopular opinion in the communities. And we'll continue
- 49:14Speaker 16: to see, you know, we as a community did a
- 49:16Speaker 16: really great job the selloff of public lands during the
- 49:19Speaker 16: reconciliation fight, but we're going to continue to see the
- 49:22Speaker 16: onslaught of more and more things that are going to
- 49:26Speaker 16: come from the administration and Congress to try to continue
- 49:30Speaker 16: to privatize those lands. So right now, what we're working on,
- 49:34Speaker 16: and I would say there's probably two big issues at
- 49:38Speaker 16: the moment, the repeal of resource management plans within Congress,
- 49:43Speaker 16: and then on the administration side, it's opening up drilling
- 49:47Speaker 16: in the Western Arctic and the repeal of the public
- 49:49Speaker 16: Lands Rule.
- 49:51Speaker 1: And we have not talked a lot about Western Arctic
- 49:56Speaker 1: here recently. Would you want to give us a quick
- 50:00Speaker 1: snapshot of of what the conversation is. Western Arctic obviously
- 50:05Speaker 1: huge caribou area, and our Western Arctic herd is not
- 50:12Speaker 1: historically healthy right now from a population standpoint, and Western
- 50:19Speaker 1: Arctic has some calving areas, and obviously a huge migration
- 50:26Speaker 1: route for our migratory birds.
- 50:30Speaker 16: Absolutely, and it's one of the last remaining intact ecosystems
- 50:34Speaker 16: we have on the planet. Right, I think I think
- 50:36Speaker 16: you went this summer to did you go to the
- 50:39Speaker 16: Western Arctic.
- 50:40Speaker 1: Or well, we have been like we would have been
- 50:43Speaker 1: east to west. Yeah, we were, so we were, we were.
- 50:47Speaker 1: We were still quite aways east to like Prudo. Okay, yeah,
- 50:52Speaker 1: we're closer to Canada.
- 50:54Speaker 15: Okay, gotcha, gotcha.
- 50:55Speaker 16: But that whole entire system, right is super important. And
- 51:00Speaker 16: so right now we're kind of in a holding pattern
- 51:04Speaker 16: at the moment. So in June, the Interior Department proposed
- 51:08Speaker 16: to rescind the current Integrated Activities Plan.
- 51:11Speaker 15: So it's like a management plan for the Western Arctic.
- 51:14Speaker 16: And that plan limited oil and gas development from expanding
- 51:19Speaker 16: into the special areas, which is some of what you've
- 51:22Speaker 16: been talking about within the Western Arctic. The important piece
- 51:27Speaker 16: of that plan is that it really did balance energy
- 51:30Speaker 16: production with the protection of this ecosystem. They opened it
- 51:37Speaker 16: up to rescind it, they proposed to rescind it, they
- 51:39Speaker 16: had a comment period.
- 51:41Speaker 15: That common period.
- 51:42Speaker 16: Has since closed, and during that common period, we really
- 51:46Speaker 16: saw the communities rise up and have a steady drombeat
- 51:50Speaker 16: of opposition. So right now we're waiting for the administration
- 51:54Speaker 16: to release its final plan.
- 51:56Speaker 15: During there at the same time, if you remember, during
- 51:59Speaker 15: the congression all.
- 52:02Speaker 16: Reconciliation fight, the Senate added back in provisions that directed
- 52:07Speaker 16: DOI to resume oil and gas, the oil and gas
- 52:10Speaker 16: leasing program in the Western Arctic. So this that provision
- 52:15Speaker 16: sort of went back to the Trump era plan that
- 52:19Speaker 16: requires at least four million acres to be leased for drilling.
- 52:23Speaker 15: So there's more to come here.
- 52:25Speaker 16: I think we'll it'll start to unravel itself again and
- 52:28Speaker 16: we're probably going to see this in the courts.
- 52:32Speaker 1: And then I guess real quick, what from that community
- 52:37Speaker 1: level that you spoke about, what's the community response in
- 52:43Speaker 1: regarding in regards to rescinding roadless in the in the Tongas.
- 52:47Speaker 1: Tongus and roadless typically go hand in hand. You can't
- 52:51Speaker 1: talk about Roadless Act without talking about Tongus.
- 52:56Speaker 15: Yeah, that's for sure, you know.
- 52:59Speaker 16: So Tongus is national forest and it's it's dear to
- 53:04Speaker 16: my heart because it is in my backyard. This is
- 53:07Speaker 16: where I recreate all the time. And the Tonguess National
- 53:11Speaker 16: Forest is particularly going to be affected by the recision
- 53:14Speaker 16: of the roadless rule because it's you know, the worldless areas,
- 53:17Speaker 16: and the Tongus is almost ninety two percent of all
- 53:22Speaker 16: of the forest. And you know, as you guys know,
- 53:24Speaker 16: the Tongus is the largest national forest in the United States.
- 53:27Speaker 16: It's the world's last remaining temperate rainforest. It's called the
- 53:33Speaker 16: climate forest or the lungs of the North of North
- 53:36Speaker 16: America because of its old growth trees and the ability
- 53:40Speaker 16: for those trees to really like breathe in carbon and
- 53:46Speaker 16: use it as a carbon sink for the rest of
- 53:49Speaker 16: the earth. It's completely and just beautifully biologically diverse it's
- 53:54Speaker 16: home to brown bears.
- 53:55Speaker 15: And black bears and wolves and all sorts of Sitka.
- 53:58Speaker 16: Blacktail deer, which by the way, that's that hunt is
- 54:02Speaker 16: starting soon too, so I'm super excited about that.
- 54:05Speaker 15: And it's like it's one of the most important habitats.
- 54:08Speaker 16: For all five species of Pacific salmon, so it's super important.
- 54:12Speaker 16: It's culturally important for indigenous folks who have steward and
- 54:16Speaker 16: lived on the land since time immemorial, and it's a
- 54:19Speaker 16: tourism powerhouse. You have all of the things right for
- 54:22Speaker 16: the Tongas that just make it a really important place.
- 54:25Speaker 16: And because of all of those things, those communities are
- 54:29Speaker 16: the ones that are really standing up and saying no,
- 54:33Speaker 16: we want to keep the roadless rule intact, and it's
- 54:36Speaker 16: important to do so. You know, the roadless rule has
- 54:39Speaker 16: been around since two thousand and one. It's nine million
- 54:42Speaker 16: acres of the Tongas that are designated as roadless, and
- 54:45Speaker 16: it's important for us to continue that. It's not just
- 54:48Speaker 16: the Tongus that the roadless rule helps, right, it's across
- 54:54Speaker 16: the west and probably a lot of areas where your
- 54:58Speaker 16: folks are listening from as well. So I think we
- 55:01Speaker 16: have one more day. I think the comment period ends tomorrow.
- 55:05Speaker 16: I know Trod Unlimited if you go on to TU
- 55:07Speaker 16: dot org that you can submit a comment on their portal.
- 55:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 55:13Speaker 1: T's got a good map too. The Wilderness Society's got
- 55:18Speaker 1: a good map up. BHA's got a good map up.
- 55:21Speaker 1: If you've got on X you can see you can
- 55:26Speaker 1: put on your your roadless area layer and and see
- 55:31Speaker 1: you real quick. Speaking out of bos Angelus here, our
- 55:34Speaker 1: entire watershed for the Gallatin Valley is in a roadless
- 55:37Speaker 1: area and highly highly accessible for all you casual dog
- 55:44Speaker 1: walkers even so exactly. Yeah, well, well used, well loved stuff.
- 55:51Speaker 1: Yeah darn right. Well how do folks learn more about
- 55:56Speaker 1: CLF Chris.
- 55:59Speaker 15: Oh, great question. So we're on all the socials, right,
- 56:02Speaker 15: you can.
- 56:02Speaker 16: You could find us on Instagram and all of the
- 56:06Speaker 16: social media's and then you also can go to Conservation
- 56:09Speaker 16: Lands dot org. That's our website. You can get involved there.
- 56:14Speaker 16: We also, as I said, we work with over eighty
- 56:17Speaker 16: local nonprofits, and I would imagine that a lot of
- 56:23Speaker 16: folks can be connected to some of those local nonprofits
- 56:26Speaker 16: to really do some of the work on the ground
- 56:28Speaker 16: and get to know the folks in the communities.
- 56:30Speaker 5: And I will add that you just mentioned to U's
- 56:35Speaker 5: action page. I went on there and just submitted a
- 56:38Speaker 5: comment now and I even personalized it, so everybody in
- 56:42Speaker 5: the chat, it doesn't take that long to go and
- 56:45Speaker 5: make your voice heard on these public lands issues.
- 56:48Speaker 16: That's right, and you know we've seen time and time
- 56:50Speaker 16: again it's those comments that make a difference.
- 56:54Speaker 15: Some people are like, what is my comment going to do?
- 56:58Speaker 16: But it actually makes a different increase that record to
- 57:00Speaker 16: show that either the public is for or against an issue.
- 57:04Speaker 16: And you know, when we're looking at it from the
- 57:07Speaker 16: agency perspective, but also from the congressional perspective. Congress people
- 57:11Speaker 16: want to hear from their constituencies. And when we band
- 57:14Speaker 16: together and have that voice become you know, very large
- 57:18Speaker 16: and big things happen and things change. And we saw
- 57:20Speaker 16: that with the publicly and sell off fight.
- 57:23Speaker 5: That's right.
- 57:23Speaker 1: And if you folks at home want to think about
- 57:27Speaker 1: it in a very tangible way, do you act differently
- 57:31Speaker 1: when people are paying attention to you?
- 57:36Speaker 15: Exactly?
- 57:36Speaker 1: Our representatives and our senators, they can darn sure act
- 57:41Speaker 1: differently when they know a lot of people are paying
- 57:44Speaker 1: attention to them. So right, that's part of getting your
- 57:47Speaker 1: comment yeah, uh, Chris Hill, thank you so much. Con
- 57:52Speaker 1: Conservation Lands Foundation, we'll have to have you back on
- 57:56Speaker 1: and where to go, Where to folks to find you again.
- 58:01Speaker 16: Conservation lands dot org or any social channels.
- 58:05Speaker 1: Awesome, Well, thank you so much, and we or I
- 58:09Speaker 1: we'll see you in the heart of the cold, cold
- 58:11Speaker 1: city next week when we're going to talk about climate
- 58:15Speaker 1: and conservation and public lands in Manhattan an actual island.
- 58:22Speaker 3: Running around there.
- 58:23Speaker 15: No, we might see some rats though.
- 58:27Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks Chris.
- 58:31Speaker 16: Yeah, thank you all, and I'll see you soon.
- 58:33Speaker 11: Thank you.
- 58:33Speaker 5: Thanks Chris.
- 58:36Speaker 3: We got a new segment for you today and it
- 58:40Speaker 3: is called Three Harsh Truths.
- 58:43Speaker 7: Hey, little honey, let me launch your candle cozy so
- 58:46Speaker 7: hot to handle now, spin doctors like I just.
- 58:58Speaker 3: I just came up with this segment of couple of
- 59:00Speaker 3: days ago, and you just, oh my.
- 59:02Speaker 5: God, we should just make up new segments all the time.
- 59:05Speaker 7: Oh please don't.
- 59:07Speaker 5: It's the highlight of this show.
- 59:09Speaker 4: Three Harsh Truths is where our panel of experts, self
- 59:14Speaker 4: appointed experts, We're gonna share some things that most people
- 59:19Speaker 4: might not want to believe, but they're certainly true, at
- 59:23Speaker 4: least according to us. And I thought about calling it
- 59:27Speaker 4: hot takes, but it's like overused and hot takes are
- 59:30Speaker 4: typically opinions that are expressed like without any real evidence,
- 59:34Speaker 4: and we wouldn't do that to you, So we're gonna
- 59:37Speaker 4: share ours with you in order cal laid on us.
- 59:41Speaker 3: What's a harsh truth.
- 59:44Speaker 1: Buying your hunting and fishing license is not enough. You
- 59:48Speaker 1: have got to if you want to be a responsible
- 59:52Speaker 1: hunter or angler, you have got to participate in our
- 59:57Speaker 1: system of wildlife management, which sometimes you would feel like
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: is being political, but uh, fill out your surveys, go
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: to in person, go to your fishing game committee meetings,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: participate in the comment periods, and write your senators and
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: congress people. It makes a huge difference.
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: I love filling out those surveys and showing up to
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: meetings too.
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: Is like you feel so much more involved and you
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: have you have such a greater awareness of what's happening.
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: Is you're to learn a bunch of stuff you otherwise
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: would not.
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: Sometimes it feels like cheating in terms of just like
- 1:00:42Speaker 5: being aware of what's happening with wildlife in your state.
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: Yep, yeah, Do you want to like round robin this
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: thing or do you want me to go do all three.
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: Well, we decide you can lay another one on us,
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: raynal and I should have told you we're just gonna
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: do one each.
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: Oh, okay, great, But if you got an all quick one, lay.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: It on ye Antelope jump fences.
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: I've seen it.
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: They can do it around for fifteen and is wondering what.
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: To do when they end up at.
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: That dovetails with Uh, this isn't my harsh truth. But
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: one of my harsh truths is, like all the stuff
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: you've heard isn't isn't right?
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, Randall.
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: My harsh truth is this. Uh, there's there's a lot
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: of like a discourse online about social media and hunting
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: and and like is social media ruining hunting? And and
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: a lot of it focuses specifically on like what's unique
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: about hunting and social media. My harsh truth is social
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: media's ruining everything. If you have any hobby, it's being
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: it's being ruined by social media. And I would just like,
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: if you look at like all the problems, I feel
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: like a lot of the problems that people complain about
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: in the hunting world are just problems about the modern world,
- 1:02:09Speaker 5: Like permits in national parks are hard to get, like
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: everything's getting too expensive, and so I just feel like
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: there's a lot of like finger pointing within the hunting
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: community about what's ruining who's ruining what. I mean, there
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: is that too, but it's like thermals. It's like, if
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: you want to go backpacking somewhere, someone's already you could
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: watch a video of someone with a GoPro on their
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: head walking that trail.
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: Like I went down, like I've been running more and
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: more lately, and I went down a running social media
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: trail tragically the other day. And it's like social media
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: is ruining running. I'm like really like, because it's not
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: ruining it for me. It's like whether you choose to
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: allow it to ruin it for.
- 1:02:58Speaker 10: You or not.
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: Like no one's on the gun to your head telling.
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: You to like believe or follow what's on every social
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: media page.
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: It's ridiculous and I think that, Like now, I had
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: a lot of thoughts about this, and they sort of sprawled.
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: The one is you haven't everything you've heard isn't true.
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: The other is like, just decide what you want and
- 1:03:19Speaker 5: you'll get it out of hunting, right, Like, like, oh,
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: do you want to go somewhere and see no see
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: see no other hunters.
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: You can do that, or you can decide to let
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: social media ruin.
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: It for you. Yeah exactly, Like like it's it's all
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: about keeping it in perspective and just recognizing that like
- 1:03:37Speaker 5: the finger pointing and the X y z. Yeah, like
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: that's all. It's not unique to our community, not at all.
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: And there's a lot of breath and and ink wasted
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: on it.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: Yeah, if you're going to do social media, do d
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: I y woodworking plumbing electrocal. Yeah yeah, then man, that's
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: who I'm watching.
- 1:04:04Speaker 5: Yeah, oh, I know, like there's I'm sure there's plumbers
- 1:04:06Speaker 5: out there, Like social media's ruined plumbing.
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: I don't make as much money as damn it.
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: Randall can replace the light switch now, Yeah, exactly.
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: Nice, Randall. I like that month's a little longer. I'll
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: get through it though.
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: There's a quote from a hunting writer and I don't
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: call who it is, but it's stuck with me over
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: the years, and it goes something like, anyone can take
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: a five hundred yard shot at an animal, but it
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: takes a really good hunter to sneak in and kill
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: one at fifty yards. And the reason I'm telling you
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: that quote is I strongly believe, based on years of experience,
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: that it's a mistake to encourage or allow young or
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: novice hunters to take long ass rifle shots at big
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: game animals. And like long is relative, right, like it's
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: it's this, there's not one specific distance, but I'll get
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: I'll get.
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: Further into that later.
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: But the reason why is, even if a new hunter
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: is practiced and they're capable of making four or five
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: hundred yard shots at the range, shooting at animals like
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: in the heat of the moment is just way different
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: than shooting at paper targets. And for every hunter, but
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: especially an experienced hunter, the goal should always be to
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: get as close as possible to minimize the chance for
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: a poor shot, a miss or a wounded animal whatever.
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: But I think just as important that that's the reason
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: you always hear, but just as important long range shooting
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: at animals is not how you learn to be a
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: good hunter.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: It's just like not has nothing to do with it.
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: Becoming a good hunter comes from reading like things like
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: reading sign watching the behavior and body language of animals,
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: learning how to like pick a route that keeps you
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: out of sight on a start, being quiet, paying attention
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: to the wind direction, Like those are the things that
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: that's how you become a good hunter. And I like, personally,
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm gonna get up on the soapbox, like
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: I I held to a strict no shots over two
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: hundred yards rule with my older son for his first
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: three big game seasons. And I know he's like a
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: better hunter for it because he was learning along the way.
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: And it taught me a lot because it didn't hamper
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: his success one bit. In his first three hunting seasons,
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: he killed three meal deer bucks in an antelope buck
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: like following that two.
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: Hundred yard rule.
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: And then like, now he's a little older and I'll
- 1:06:42Speaker 4: let him. He's shot more, he's shot at animal, he's
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: shot at targets more, and I'll let him stretch that range.
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: Out a little bit.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, this is just like a funny observational story.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: But my good buddy Jim, like old old, old old
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: Jim down in Idaho, he's real. He's yeah, I think, well,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: he's always the oldest of our hunting group. And he
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: bought a super fancy sheep rifle ultra light thing.
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: And that's the thing is those types of long range
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: systems are like so prevalent now that it's just like there,
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: you know.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: There, But here's the fun thing, Like he and he's
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: got a you can shoot like a mile on his
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: own property, like step out the door, and he shoots
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: all the time and has the ability to do it.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: And he's very capable. And about three seasons after getting
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: this rifle, he's like the furthest shot I have ever
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: made with this exploative expletive rifle is one hundred and
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: fifty yards. Yeah, And because when you grow up and
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: you've put the time in to become that good hunter,
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: your interactions with animals are much tighter.
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: They're also more fun and excite they.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: Are, but you are just naturally putting yourself in a
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: tighter distance. And the reality is is like the closer
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: you can get, the fewer variables you are going to encounter. YEP,
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: And you know your ability to see what could be
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: blocking your shot, no matter what scope you have at
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: four hundred and fifty yards is not as good as
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: it's going to be at one hundred and fifty years.
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: I like, I'm not I don't want this seem like
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: I'm trashing long range shooting. I just think it's a
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: disservice to like young and new hunters to be like, there's.
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: A bucket five hundred yards, lay down, shoot, you know,
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: like it's just like they're not learning much.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: Oh man, I watched some folks. I watched these guys
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: shoot this buck last year and it wasn't all that far,
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: but this is like a dense grizzly bear area, and
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: you know, they charged up the hill. They probably shot
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: at like four hundred and fifty yards, which is a
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: long shot, but not crazy far when you're talking about
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: long range shooting. And I watched those guys walk around
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: trying to find this deer that dropped in its tracks
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: for forty minutes, to the point where I was like,
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: I better help like bird dog these people into where
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: the deer drops. And there's just things like that that
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: people don't consider. Yeah, and if you don't know you
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: whacked that thing, a lot of people are going to
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: give up on it and be like, oh God, maybe
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: I missed. The doubt starts creeping in. And there's the
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: state of Wyoming. They had a conversation in the Fishing
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: Game regulation process about trying to address long range shooting
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: and there's ways that all of which would be you know,
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: it's it's regulating morality, which is not something we can
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: do effectively. But limitation on the amount of ammunition you
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: can pack with.
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: You make you think twice about.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: And I think I'm like, what would the effect be
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: if it's like how many tags do you have? You
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: got one valid tag? You get five rounds. That's three day, right,
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: and two extra in case you think the rifle got
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: knocked off a zero already need to prove you're.
- 1:10:28Speaker 5: You're still funny. I've never heard that the round limitation.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: Yeah, because they do it on like wm as for
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: your waterfowl.
- 1:10:37Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, interesting, try to limit skybusting.
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: Anyway, that's what I think so.
- 1:10:47Speaker 6: Or not.
- 1:10:50Speaker 7: Yeah, there should be when the second started out, there
- 1:10:53Speaker 7: should be some sort of music bed playing underneath it. It's
- 1:10:55Speaker 7: like a very you know, kind of four poding intense.
- 1:10:58Speaker 5: You could have a little button you push and it
- 1:10:59Speaker 5: just because oh, that's harsh. Throughout the Smacked Down, whenever
- 1:11:03Speaker 5: one of us makes a good point to go ooh
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: that's harsh.
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: Phil, do we got any reactions to those harsh truth
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: or or or maybe some some of the listeners.
- 1:11:12Speaker 7: I mean there were there was some happening throughout the thing.
- 1:11:15Speaker 7: I I don't remember that you know their timestamps, but
- 1:11:17Speaker 7: I couldn't tell you exactly what they were.
- 1:11:20Speaker 5: Well, give us something what we reference to here, let's
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: do a general chat.
- 1:11:26Speaker 7: Mostly what's he want? Halfle finger? He said one thing,
- 1:11:32Speaker 7: you should use your woodsmanship, not marksmanship.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: See.
- 1:11:34Speaker 7: I don't know what he's referring to here. That's what
- 1:11:36Speaker 7: we just talked about.
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: Great, Jim. This this if you're still on there, This
- 1:11:40Speaker 5: moose that I saw with the busted up leg. The
- 1:11:43Speaker 5: leg was on the left side and the right antler
- 1:11:46Speaker 5: had grown in all kinds of funky. I'll send you
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: a picture you told us about that.
- 1:11:51Speaker 7: At some point, it's mostly people asking mogor questions about
- 1:11:55Speaker 7: Hungary and people talking about Steve on theovon shout out.
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: Well, if nobody's got any anything interesting to say or ask?
- 1:12:05Speaker 7: See, this is a this, this is a me problem.
- 1:12:07Speaker 7: I screwed up. I should have been on it putting
- 1:12:09Speaker 7: these comments up as it was happening.
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: Damn it.
- 1:12:11Speaker 7: I'm so sorry.
- 1:12:12Speaker 5: You're having such a big week with D and D.
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: You find some good come on. This is my favorite part.
- 1:12:18Speaker 7: No, no, I've got listener feedback. I'm just thinking of
- 1:12:21Speaker 7: stuff in.
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: Direct to the three harsh truths.
- 1:12:25Speaker 5: Let's get this, I knew you didn't drop the ball.
- 1:12:31Speaker 7: Cal This is from Ethan when you kill your monster grizz,
- 1:12:34Speaker 7: What is your plan with it? Rug mount soft tan
- 1:12:37Speaker 7: sausage roast.
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: Do you think this far ahead? Or is that bad
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: bad juju?
- 1:12:42Speaker 7: If you feel like you're is there any superstition around I?
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: Well, it's it's part of logistical planning that you do.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: You need to plan for being successful, and then if
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: you're unsuccessful, you're just carrying extra stuff, right, So yeah,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: I am planning. The big negative of a coastal bear
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: in the fall specifically is they are they're feeding on salmon.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: And I have friends that take a chunk of meat
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: off every single bear and cook it. And and I
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: believe them because they have they have the largest database
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: data set that they're working with.
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: Can I interrupt? Yes, in Alaska, there's no salvage rule
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: for those fall bears, is there? Correct?
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: And you don't? Yeah, So my plan is to ideally
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: do some cooking up there if I am successful, and
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: come up with a game plan for what I'm going
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: to do with some big old grizzler bear meat. The
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: other thing I have tags for because I've I've purchased
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: them in advance are our wolves. And in this area,
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: you know, it's an area where the caribou population is
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: of concern and they're encouraging people to harvest wolves, and
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: they feel like there's a very high population of wolves.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: And I have always wanted to cook wolves, so I'm ideally, well,
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: we'll have like a big old grizzly bear ham and
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: a big old wolf ham and we'll do some fun
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: cooking down here in the meat Eater studio too so
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: and then as far as like rug Mount soft tan
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: stuff like I have not thought that far, like I
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: it will be utilized. I guarantee you.
- 1:14:44Speaker 7: Great. This is just an update from Kyle who asked
- 1:14:47Speaker 7: a question about differences between spring and fall turkey, and
- 1:14:50Speaker 7: he's happy to report based on that advice, he got
- 1:14:54Speaker 7: his first turkey ever yesterday. Right.
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: I saw that. I saw that on the damned social media.
- 1:14:59Speaker 5: That's ruining everything.
- 1:15:00Speaker 6: Terrible.
- 1:15:01Speaker 5: Congratulations, congrats, Kyle Charles says.
- 1:15:04Speaker 7: Its media to Rose still happening. I haven't seen a
- 1:15:06Speaker 7: new episode in a while. It is Yohanny's gearing up
- 1:15:08Speaker 7: to film the next batch of episodes, so stay tuned.
- 1:15:10Speaker 5: It requires coordinating a lot of schedules.
- 1:15:14Speaker 7: Caleb, because you were mean to me and yelled, I
- 1:15:16Speaker 7: will answer your ask your question. If you need vision assistance,
- 1:15:20Speaker 7: do you prefer glasses or contacts in the field.
- 1:15:24Speaker 5: I can tell you what Sydney preferred, because my vision
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: is perfect. She preferred laser eye surgery.
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: There you go, options see contacts here.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I've seen people have issues with both. But I
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: do feel very poorly for one of my good friends
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: who I won't won't name, used to call him the
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: pot bellied stallion. Uh, looking at that dude with his
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: glasses all fogged up when he's sucking wind trying to
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: get up the hill fast.
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's like looking through buying knows in a
- 1:16:00Speaker 4: spot and scute with glasses is kind of a pane.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: But but do you feel like you like I feel
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: like you should have like a little eyeball kit if
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: you're going to go the contact route, multiple like you
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: need your solution.
- 1:16:15Speaker 5: Sydney always did context and it was like contexts in
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: the tent. It was just like a nightmare.
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: Well, dailies are way easier.
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: I mean, they're a little more trash to deal with,
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: but I mean I just bring twice as many dailies
- 1:16:29Speaker 4: as I think I'm gonna need because the dust gets
- 1:16:31Speaker 4: in there.
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: What you know, at one point we pulled some dailies
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: out of the trash and washed them to put them
- 1:16:38Speaker 5: back in her eyes.
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: Interesting, improvised and overcome the laser.
- 1:16:44Speaker 7: I will say aiden, thank you for watching the show
- 1:16:47Speaker 7: live for the first time. I appreciate it. I have
- 1:16:50Speaker 7: seen your question that you have submitted literally nine times
- 1:16:54Speaker 7: about getting a young hunter into it. I haven't picked
- 1:16:58Speaker 7: your question because that's that's we've talked about that a lot.
- 1:17:01Speaker 7: And also Brodie's the only dad on the panel.
- 1:17:03Speaker 5: So but my my parents didn't hunt.
- 1:17:06Speaker 7: Randall, And how did you get into hunting, and how
- 1:17:09Speaker 7: would you encourage other young hunters to get into hunting.
- 1:17:11Speaker 5: Get your friends into it, find friends who have We
- 1:17:15Speaker 5: had like a group of friends and one of our
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: dads hunted. Yeah, there's ways, and we all transmitted it
- 1:17:20Speaker 5: through osmosis. There's mentorship programs with fish and game departments.
- 1:17:26Speaker 5: Buy our book Catch Caerry Fish, Count the Stars. There's
- 1:17:29Speaker 5: a great big.
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: Section in there on how to do it like, there's
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: ways to do it for sure.
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll tell you, if you're interested in it and
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: you're not just actively figuring it out, you're probably not
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: cut out for the hunting game. I say that that
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: that sounds like a harsh truth, Haru. But I'll tell you, like,
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: I was surrounded by very casual hunters and it wasn't
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: like anything near the way people live it in this office.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: And I bugged the hell out of the people to
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: facilitate my obsession with hunting without having anybody directly there
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: to be a mentor, right Like, I just there was
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: something about it. I was very interested in it, and
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: I pushed and pushed and pushed, and people kept throwing
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: footballs and basketballs and baseballs at me, saying like here,
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: play with this. You at them exactly so you'll you'll
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: figure it out. Like if it if you're interested in it,
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: you just got to make it happen and don't let
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: stuff holds you back.
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: Ye. Great, Sorry to do that to you, Phil.
- 1:18:46Speaker 7: Well, Jordan says, Phil is getting little sterns into this
- 1:18:48Speaker 7: big trivia podcast.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: Jordan's shut up, that's not the reason. I'm just a
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: little prickly.
- 1:18:56Speaker 7: After that uh, that misunderstanding about the feed Act with
- 1:19:00Speaker 7: the three harsh Trews and everyone got mad at me.
- 1:19:02Speaker 7: And also like I carry a small amount of insecurity
- 1:19:05Speaker 7: about being a non hunter who has to pick hunting
- 1:19:07Speaker 7: questions for a bunch of hunters to answer.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: It's a hard job.
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: Back heres, there you go, There you go, Phil laying
- 1:19:15Speaker 4: down the law.
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: All right, we're gonna move on from that.

- 1:19:23Speaker 4: You know next time you'll do better, Thanks Brody. So,

- 1:21:36Speaker 3: It was great. This is bition.
- 1:21:39Speaker 4: So if you're laying and you don't know how to
- 1:21:41Speaker 4: make your own jerky out of deer, elk or whatever
- 1:21:43Speaker 4: you got in the freezer, that stuff's real good.
- 1:21:45Speaker 3: It's buffalo.

- 1:22:11Speaker 7: miso phonia. You guys know what that is.
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: That's when a sound really bugsy, real bad.
- 1:22:16Speaker 7: When people are chewing into a microphone.

- 1:22:20Speaker 1: Masticated.

- 1:22:47Speaker 1: bunch of other uh like sustainable projects that that support
