- 0:04Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Outspoken Plus. It's your extra dose
- 0:08Speaker 1: of the hottest influencer and pop culture news. I'm Amy
- 0:11Speaker 1: Torber and coming up on today's show, Laura Henshaw doesn't
- 0:15Speaker 1: want you to know she's selling her home. And Kick
- 0:17Speaker 1: Studio membership prices are unveiled. But first, Laura Byrne and
- 0:22Speaker 1: Maddie J have divided their audience after announcing their beach
- 0:25Speaker 1: house is available to rent for holidays. In a post
- 0:28Speaker 1: shared on their beach home's Instagram account, they wrote, This year,
- 0:31Speaker 1: with Poppy hating the car and life pulling us north,
- 0:34Speaker 1: we haven't been able to give her the time she deserves.
- 0:37Speaker 1: And it felt wrong for her to sit empty, waiting.
- 0:40Speaker 1: So we've decided to share her magic. Now, the couple
- 0:43Speaker 1: purchased the Ulladulla home in 2024 and spent a year
- 0:46Speaker 1: restoring it into a luxury escape. They, of course, documented
- 0:50Speaker 1: the process on the home's Instagram account and people absolutely
- 0:53Speaker 1: fell in love with the renovations.
- 0:55Speaker 2: It is an absolutely stunning home.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's a pretty big house. So on the listing,
- 0:59Speaker 1: it said it can accommodate up to 10 guests in
- 1:02Speaker 1: its four bedrooms. It's also got two bathrooms and the
- 1:04Speaker 1: most amazing waterfront view. The view is definitely the drawcard.
- 1:08Speaker 1: But what everyone is focusing on is the cost per night.
- 1:12Speaker 1: So in order to stay at Laura and Maddie J's house,
- 1:16Speaker 1: you have to pay either $ 1, 100 a night, and that
- 1:19Speaker 1: is in the non-peak period.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Or $ 1, 600 a night during school holidays. What do you think, Amy?
- 1:27Speaker 1: It's pretty pricey. But then again, they probably can demand
- 1:31Speaker 1: that price because of the fact that they've got an
- 1:34Speaker 1: Instagram account for it. There's a lot of demand for
- 1:37Speaker 1: these influencers' homes. People want to stay in Maddie J
- 1:40Speaker 1: and Laura's house. I personally wouldn't pay that much. I mean,
- 1:42Speaker 1: we went to Middleton recently and we paid the same
- 1:45Speaker 1: price of one night for about a whole week's stay.
- 1:48Speaker 1: So it depends what your budget is. I don't know
- 1:50Speaker 1: if I'd be paying it. Yeah. I mean, I personally
- 1:52Speaker 1: couldn't afford it, but I don't think it is so
- 1:55Speaker 1: out of this world compared to other homes on the
- 1:58Speaker 1: coast in New South Wales, particularly homes that are newly renovated.
- 2:02Speaker 1: And I mean, I think their argument was, well, if
- 2:05Speaker 1: you divide it by 10, that's $ 150 per night per person.
- 2:09Speaker 1: But I suppose when you think about Maddie J and
- 2:11Speaker 1: Laura's audience, it's young families who are going, oh, okay,
- 2:15Speaker 1: it might stay down like they do and think, oh,
- 2:18Speaker 1: hang on, $ 1, 100 divided by two because, you know, your
- 2:21Speaker 1: kids aren't chipping in for their night's stay.
- 2:24Speaker 2: That's a lot of money.
- 2:25Speaker 1: I mean, I saw someone wrote, well, I did the
- 2:27Speaker 1: math and if we wanted to stay there for a week,
- 2:29Speaker 1: it was going to be $ 7, 700.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Like, wouldn't you go to Bali?
- 2:33Speaker 1: Yeah. Maybe they've made it so high because they only want,
- 2:35Speaker 1: and this sounds terrible, but I certain caliber of person
- 2:39Speaker 1: staying there because the.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Fact that they we don't want schoolies there well.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Yeah exactly and the fact that they both have these
- 2:45Speaker 1: huge profiles and they've probably got all of their belongings
- 2:48Speaker 1: there and stuff maybe they're like fuck this if we're
- 2:50Speaker 1: going to rent it out we're going to make a
- 2:51Speaker 1: pretty penny from it it sounds like a complete head
- 2:53Speaker 1: fuck for me i would be so worried if i
- 2:55Speaker 1: was them that i'd leave something in you know the
- 2:58Speaker 1: the bathroom that was embarrassing because i mean if it
- 3:01Speaker 1: was me staying there i'd probably like have a little
- 3:03Speaker 1: poke around. Yeah. But now they're renting it out. They
- 3:05Speaker 1: probably clear everything out. I wonder, is it actually just
- 3:08Speaker 1: four bedrooms or are there five bedrooms? Because at this
- 3:10Speaker 1: place we stayed at in Middleton, they had a locked
- 3:13Speaker 1: room and I was like, oh, we're all debating. Do
- 3:15Speaker 1: they keep spare mattresses in there? Like, do they switch
- 3:18Speaker 1: out the mattresses or what is actually in that room?
- 3:21Speaker 1: Because you would think, oh, maybe it's the master bedroom.
- 3:24Speaker 1: But no, the master bedroom was upstairs with an en suite.
- 3:27Speaker 1: This was just another tacked on little room. Well, it
- 3:29Speaker 1: was pretty scary. Soph and I stayed in this Airbnb
- 3:32Speaker 1: two years ago when we were in Melbourne for the
- 3:33Speaker 1: Australian Open. And it was advertised as a one bedroom apartment,
- 3:37Speaker 1: but it actually had two. The second bedroom was just
- 3:40Speaker 1: locked up. But what freaked us out is we went
- 3:43Speaker 1: out one day to go shopping and we came back
- 3:46Speaker 1: and we swear someone had opened the window. Oh, So
- 3:48Speaker 1: we were half thinking, is someone sleeping in that room?
- 3:50Speaker 1: We ended up actually barricading our door because we weren't
- 3:53Speaker 1: sure what was going on. It was actually terrifying. Oh,
- 3:57Speaker 1: I don't like that at all. Did you click entire
- 3:59Speaker 1: house though when you booked it? Yeah, we did. It's
- 4:03Speaker 1: not like it was a situation where you accidentally book
- 4:05Speaker 1: and then realize that you only have one room. In
- 4:08Speaker 1: terms of Laura and Maddie J's Airbnb, they've actually created
- 4:12Speaker 1: a whole website for the house and they've put the
- 4:14Speaker 1: floor plan on it. And from what I can see,
- 4:16Speaker 1: there's no fifth bedroom. So maybe they've got a cellar
- 4:19Speaker 1: under the house that they're hiding. Maybe. I mean, they
- 4:22Speaker 1: are pretty open on their podcast. I don't think much
- 4:24Speaker 1: would actually embarrass them. Now, they are also renting their
- 4:27Speaker 1: home out for photo shoots, which seems to be the
- 4:30Speaker 1: done thing in the influencer space at the moment. Sarah's Day,
- 4:33Speaker 1: who is yet to actually redesign her beach house, said
- 4:36Speaker 1: that once it's done, they will be renting it out
- 4:39Speaker 1: for photo shoots. And earlier this month, Georgie Stevenson faced
- 4:42Speaker 1: backlash from her followers when she revealed that she actually
- 4:45Speaker 1: rents out her family home for photo shoots. So she
- 4:49Speaker 1: lives in a $ 6. 5 million mansion that she bought last year.
- 4:53Speaker 1: The house has a name, of course, because all mansions do.
- 4:56Speaker 2: It's called Palm Hill.
- 4:58Speaker 1: A lot of other houses do. You don't have to
- 4:59Speaker 1: have a mansion to name it. I know they can.
- 5:01Speaker 1: But in terms of percentages, you would say a higher
- 5:04Speaker 1: number of houses that are mansions would have names over
- 5:08Speaker 1: just your humble abode. Do you remember back in the
- 5:09Speaker 1: day when you used to say mansion? A mansion was
- 5:11Speaker 1: a house that cost a million dollars. Now, I'm only
- 5:14Speaker 1: talking from a perspective of Adelaide. That's nearly like the
- 5:17Speaker 1: median house price. Like that will get you a pretty
- 5:20Speaker 1: standard home now. Yeah. Definitely not a $ 6. 5 million hinterland
- 5:24Speaker 1: mansion with a name. Yeah. Georgie Stevenson's home is a
- 5:27Speaker 1: legitimate mansion and that's why people want to book it out.
- 5:29Speaker 1: The thing I found most difficult to get my head
- 5:31Speaker 1: around is that she has to take her toddler and
- 5:35Speaker 1: her newborn baby out of the house for a whole
- 5:38Speaker 1: day in order for people to use it for photo shoots.
- 5:41Speaker 1: So clearly the money must be worth it. They charge
- 5:44Speaker 1: $ 375 per hour and they have a flat rate of
- 5:47Speaker 1: $ 3, 000 for the day. But this is how the rich
- 5:52Speaker 1: stay rich. They have all of these different revenue streams
- 5:55Speaker 1: coming in because people would go, wait a sec, she's
- 5:57Speaker 1: already got millions of dollars. Why does she need 375
- 6:00Speaker 1: per hour? But she's smart. Like they constantly have money
- 6:04Speaker 1: rolling in. I would do it if I was in
- 6:07Speaker 1: her position. Yeah, well, that's exactly the feedback she got.
- 6:10Speaker 1: One follower wrote, don't you already have enough money? While
- 6:13Speaker 1: another commented, it sounded very inconvenient for a young family. Now,
- 6:16Speaker 1: Georgie hit back saying that a one-day photo shoot can
- 6:19Speaker 1: cover their entire mortgage for the week. Sometimes it even
- 6:22Speaker 1: covers the mortgages of all four of their properties for
- 6:26Speaker 1: the week.
- 6:26Speaker 2: What a flex.
- 6:27Speaker 1: It's like, hang on, hold my beer. I know what
- 6:30Speaker 1: I'm doing with money. I've got four properties. She also
- 6:33Speaker 1: went on to say it was an incredible income stream
- 6:35Speaker 1: and helped with her aim to retire by the age
- 6:37Speaker 1: of 40. I saw this pop up on news.com.au and
- 6:41Speaker 1: the headline was very misleading. It was like, this is
- 6:43Speaker 1: what this one influencer does to make so much money.
- 6:47Speaker 1: And it was implying that she was an OnlyFans. And
- 6:49Speaker 1: of course the comment section of all the boomers was like, oh,
- 6:52Speaker 1: that's deplorable and everything. I was like, oh my God,
- 6:54Speaker 1: it's renting her house out. Like fucking click on the article.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Let's be honest though, in the current financial climate that
- 7:00Speaker 1: we're in, I mean, we've just had another rate rise.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I would say not many people are feeling, you know,
- 7:06Speaker 1: that thrilled.
- 7:07Speaker 2: For these influencers that have.
- 7:08Speaker 1: These extra revenue streams coming through when they're already loaded.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Like it is hard to be happy for them when
- 7:15Speaker 1: you're like, oh God, like, I wouldn't even be able
- 7:18Speaker 1: to have a beach house, let alone rent your beach
- 7:20Speaker 1: house out for a night or for.
- 7:21Speaker 2: A photo shoot.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I get all of that. But I actually think a
- 7:23Speaker 1: lot of the genuine concern came from mothers that were like,
- 7:25Speaker 1: fucking hell, imagine just having to take your baby out
- 7:28Speaker 1: of the house. And I have felt that today because
- 7:30Speaker 1: we're having renovations currently and we had very noisy builders
- 7:34Speaker 1: coming in and I've had to relocate everything to mum
- 7:37Speaker 1: and dad's house. And it's a fucking nightmare. So I
- 7:40Speaker 1: get it. They're like, really, you're worth that much. Why
- 7:42Speaker 1: would you even bother? Like that just sounds like such
- 7:44Speaker 1: an inconvenience. I don't actually think it's coming from a
- 7:47Speaker 1: place of jealousy. I think it's coming from a place
- 7:49Speaker 1: of like, I honestly couldn't be bothered.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I mean, I'd do it for $ 3, 000 a day. I'd
- 7:53Speaker 2: happily relocate, put my son up at my dad's house.
- 7:56Speaker 1: But people are thinking if you're worth a fortune, why
- 7:59Speaker 1: would you bother? But people like her do because they
- 8:02Speaker 1: know it's worth it in the end. Do you know
- 8:04Speaker 1: the crazy thing about Maddie J and Laura Byrne is,
- 8:07Speaker 1: just on average, I know there are peak times where
- 8:09Speaker 1: they charge more for the house, but if they got
- 8:11Speaker 1: somebody in that house every night, they have the potential
- 8:14Speaker 1: to make $ 365, 000 a year off that. That's a lot
- 8:17Speaker 1: of money. Laura Henshaw is selling her home, except she'd
- 8:22Speaker 1: prefer you not to know. The Kik founder and her
- 8:25Speaker 1: entrepreneur husband privately listed their home through White Fox Real Estate. However,
- 8:30Speaker 1: it didn't take long for the media to report on
- 8:32Speaker 1: the famous owners. Yeah. So on Thursday, realestate.com and Homes
- 8:37Speaker 1: to Love ran with the scoop that the renovated mansion
- 8:40Speaker 1: listed by White Fox was owned by Laura and Dalton Henshaw. Now,
- 8:44Speaker 1: for privacy reasons, we won't be discussing the home's location
- 8:47Speaker 1: as the couple may still be living in the house.
- 8:49Speaker 1: What I do want to talk about, though, is the
- 8:51Speaker 1: home's price. So Laura and Dalton purchased the home in
- 8:55Speaker 1: July 2021 for $ 4.
- 8:55Speaker 2: 4 million dollars.
- 8:59Speaker 1: After undergoing extensive renovations, they're now asking for more than
- 9:02Speaker 1: double what they paid with the home listed for $ 9 million.
- 9:06Speaker 1: When I initially saw this news popping up all over
- 9:09Speaker 1: social media, I thought that Laura and Dalton were keen
- 9:13Speaker 1: to be a part of the story. But when you
- 9:15Speaker 1: delve a little bit deeper, it's clear that they're not
- 9:17Speaker 1: happy about their names being out there. Because when realestate.com.au
- 9:21Speaker 1: approached the managing director of White Fox Real Estate, Lana Samuels,
- 9:25Speaker 1: she declined to comment on who the owners of the
- 9:27Speaker 1: property actually were. I'm predicting that Laura Henshaw, in a
- 9:31Speaker 1: similar vein to Steph Glessmith, will release a podcast episode
- 9:33Speaker 1: complaining that this private information got out there.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Now, in terms of the home, it's very unique.
- 9:39Speaker 1: So it still has the facade of the original heritage home,
- 9:43Speaker 1: but then has this massive cathedral style extension on the back. Now,
- 9:47Speaker 1: the open plan living area is definitely the big selling point.
- 9:50Speaker 1: It's got these beautiful floor to ceiling glass overlooks a
- 9:53Speaker 1: resort style pool. I felt like the home was very
- 9:56Speaker 1: Laura Henshaw. Oh, it's a beautiful home. I can kind
- 9:59Speaker 1: of see. though why they wouldn't want this information out
- 10:02Speaker 1: there because everyone knows how successful Kik is. Because I
- 10:06Speaker 1: think Laura likes to be one of the people. I mean,
- 10:08Speaker 1: the other day on the Kik pod, or maybe it
- 10:09Speaker 1: was Kik bump, Laura was talking about getting a cup
- 10:12Speaker 1: holder for her pram. And she was saying like both
- 10:15Speaker 1: her and Steph were sort of discussing, oh, no, I
- 10:17Speaker 1: didn't know whether to spend $ 100 on the really expensive
- 10:19Speaker 1: one or the $ 10. It's like, babe, your house is
- 10:22Speaker 1: selling for $ 9 million. I think you can buy the
- 10:24Speaker 1: $ 100 cup holder.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I mean, Laura recently opened up to her followers about
- 10:28Speaker 1: the complicated relationship she has with money. So late last year,
- 10:32Speaker 1: she revealed that she and Dalton had bought what she
- 10:35Speaker 1: called as a beautiful little beach shack the year before
- 10:39Speaker 1: and they'd been renovating it that year. She wrote, it's
- 10:42Speaker 1: truly a dream growing up. I remember dreaming of having
- 10:44Speaker 1: a house down the beach, something I never ever thought
- 10:46Speaker 1: would be possible. I've been processing a lot of guilt
- 10:49Speaker 1: around the privilege of having the house, which to be
- 10:51Speaker 1: completely honest is still there a little bit. I have
- 10:53Speaker 1: a very complex relationship with money from my childhood, which
- 10:57Speaker 1: I know I'm not alone in. And I'm also so
- 10:59Speaker 1: incredibly aware of the financial climate in Australia, in particular
- 11:03Speaker 1: right now. And it's probably why I haven't shared until
- 11:05Speaker 1: now Then she went on to say that she felt
- 11:07Speaker 1: weird not sharing about it. It actually makes me feel
- 11:10Speaker 1: bad because I think a lot of people would see
- 11:12Speaker 1: her earning all of this money and having this beautiful house.
- 11:15Speaker 1: And I think a lot of the instant reaction would
- 11:17Speaker 1: be jealousy. Like, oh my God, I can't believe that.
- 11:20Speaker 1: You know, that's something I could only dream of. But
- 11:23Speaker 1: the shit thing is, as women, we seem to have
- 11:25Speaker 1: to apologize for everything. It's almost like Laura had to
- 11:27Speaker 1: issue an apologetic statement that she, you know, has been
- 11:30Speaker 1: so successful in her career and that she was able
- 11:33Speaker 1: to purchase a beach house, but you never see men
- 11:35Speaker 1: doing that. Yeah, I think there's definitely some internalised misogyny
- 11:39Speaker 1: at play. It is interesting because Laura has always shied
- 11:41Speaker 1: away from advertising her wealth.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Unlike her business partner.
- 11:45Speaker 1: And best friend, Steph Clare-Smith, she has always declined to
- 11:47Speaker 1: feature in the AFR rich list. But having Steph appear
- 11:51Speaker 1: on the list has always given you a clue as
- 11:54Speaker 1: to how much money Laura must be making because they
- 11:56Speaker 1: co-founded KickTogether. So it's like you've always known that she
- 12:00Speaker 1: is a multi-millionaire. But the life she portrays online, you know,
- 12:05Speaker 1: she makes sure it looks quite simple. So it was
- 12:07Speaker 1: a big step for her to actually say, hey, look,
- 12:09Speaker 1: I actually do have a beach house. That being said, though,
- 12:12Speaker 1: I always thought that Steph was wealthier because she had
- 12:15Speaker 1: that background as being a really high up model. And
- 12:18Speaker 1: the fact that she came into the business having, what,
- 12:21Speaker 1: nearly a million followers, I always thought she had money
- 12:24Speaker 1: previously to start in Kik. I really don't think the
- 12:27Speaker 1: pay packet she got for modeling would be comparable to
- 12:29Speaker 1: what she's earning with Kik.
- 12:31Speaker 2: I mean, it's clear they're making a lot of money.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Well, that actually moves us on to our other story,
- 12:37Speaker 1: which is the Kik Studio. So Laura's house listing actually
- 12:41Speaker 1: comes off the back of Kik launching their first physical
- 12:44Speaker 1: site in Cremorne this April. So they've unveiled foundation membership packages. Now,
- 12:50Speaker 1: according to the fitness co-founders, there are only limited numbers
- 12:54Speaker 1: available and Now, Amy, would you like to take a
- 12:56Speaker 1: guess as to how much it costs per week to
- 12:59Speaker 1: go to the kick studio? Look, I genuinely don't know
- 13:02Speaker 1: the answer to this. I'm going to take a guess.
- 13:04Speaker 1: I know F45, remember when that came in, that was
- 13:06Speaker 1: really expensive. You had to pay $ 45 a week. Is
- 13:09Speaker 1: it something like 85 bucks? I'm guessing inflation.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Okay, you're pretty close. So a three-month minimum foundation membership
- 13:18Speaker 2: costs $ 69 a week.
- 13:21Speaker 1: However, that price will go up to $ 75 a week
- 13:24Speaker 1: for normal members that aren't the foundation members. And then
- 13:28Speaker 1: the other package is a six month minimum foundation membership,
- 13:31Speaker 1: which costs $ 59 a week and non-foundation members will then
- 13:35Speaker 1: pay $ 65 a week. In both of those memberships, you
- 13:38Speaker 1: get the same benefits, but obviously one is for three
- 13:41Speaker 1: months and one is six months. So the benefits are
- 13:44Speaker 1: you get access to unlimited studio classes, plus a complimentary
- 13:47Speaker 1: subscription to the kick app. outraged by that price. Would
- 13:51Speaker 1: I pay it? Probably not. But I think that a
- 13:55Speaker 1: lot of people would. And it's a bit like the
- 13:57Speaker 1: Georgie Stevenson thing. Like this is why they're able to
- 14:01Speaker 1: have $ 9 million mansions because they've got a lot of
- 14:03Speaker 1: different fingers in different parts. Yeah. Well, when you compare
- 14:06Speaker 1: Kick Studios prices to its competitors, they definitely are on
- 14:10Speaker 1: the higher end of things when it comes to Pilates
- 14:12Speaker 1: and boutique fitness prices. Obviously, regular gym memberships are also
- 14:17Speaker 1: a lot cheaper. Yeah. It's also interesting to compare it
- 14:20Speaker 1: to the cost of the Kik app. So if you
- 14:22Speaker 1: purchase an annual subscription, it equates to $ 2.
- 14:25Speaker 2: 60 a week or on a monthly subscription at $ 7
- 14:28Speaker 2: a week.
- 14:28Speaker 1: So that means that the in-studio experience is 10 to
- 14:31Speaker 1: 25 times more expensive than the app, which shows that
- 14:34Speaker 1: they are clearly targeting a completely different segment of people,
- 14:37Speaker 1: which makes sense.
- 14:39Speaker 2: It's a good business strategy.
- 14:41Speaker 1: It really is. And when we first spoke about Laura
- 14:43Speaker 1: and Steph teasing this Kik Studio announcement, We hypothesized whether
- 14:48Speaker 1: they would be leading any of the classes on offer. Disappointingly,
- 14:51Speaker 1: they will not be. Instead, they have employed Imogen Sist
- 14:55Speaker 1: as their head trainer. Yeah. I mean, I was thinking
- 14:57Speaker 1: for those prices that they might be running the classes,
- 14:59Speaker 1: but they are not. But I'm guessing they'll be there
- 15:02Speaker 1: quite a bit showing their faces. I'm actually not that surprised.
- 15:05Speaker 1: I feel like maybe you'd have to pay $ 1, 000 a
- 15:07Speaker 1: week to actually get Steph and Laura down there because
- 15:09Speaker 1: these girls are busy. They've got a lot of businesses
- 15:11Speaker 1: to run. They've got children. They've got a lot going on. Now,
- 15:15Speaker 1: I think that is all we have time for today.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Thank you so much for listening to another episode of Outspoken.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Now, as Outspoken Plus subscribers, we know you guys are
- 15:23Speaker 2: the real deal.
