- 0:04Speaker 1: The Madness of the month is here. Sixty four teams,
- 0:09Speaker 1: a few locals, including of course Saint John's Hofstra l
- 0:13Speaker 1: i U Siena today also, I mean a lot of
- 0:17Speaker 1: locals in the tournament. But let's start there round of
- 0:20Speaker 1: sixty four. My pick at the beginning of it is
- 0:23Speaker 1: Duke all the way. Is that a far off pick
- 0:25Speaker 1: you guys or what I mean? I know you picked
- 0:27Speaker 1: Duke as well.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Yeah, not terribly. I mean I had them and I'll
- 0:31Speaker 2: just spoil my championship bracket here if I may Duke
- 0:34Speaker 2: over Michigan, two absolute titans in their respective sides of
- 0:40Speaker 2: the bracket. Now, this is kind of a bigoft for
- 0:42Speaker 2: Duke because it really depends Alex on whether or not
- 0:45Speaker 2: they're able to get healthy. I'm operating on the assumption
- 0:48Speaker 2: that they will, and I mean, if they can go
- 0:52Speaker 2: into the National Championship healthy as can be, it is
- 0:55Speaker 2: theirs to lose, no question about it.
- 0:57Speaker 3: That's it. I know, we were just talking a little
- 0:59Speaker 3: bit show before this, Alex about Michigan's chance.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Yeah, and if Duke's still with a lot of injuries
- 1:04Speaker 2: on their end, don't be surprised that the Wolverines are
- 1:06Speaker 2: making a run at the Natty.
- 1:07Speaker 1: And they have the best, one of the best chances
- 1:09Speaker 1: I think to make a run. What about you, Louis Well.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Duke and Michigan at Michigan, and it seems like the consensus,
- 1:17Speaker 4: even though there really is a consensus, is like twelve
- 1:19Speaker 4: to fourteen teams that can win. Duke and Michigan. I
- 1:24Speaker 4: am not fans of either, obviously. Michigan. I go back
- 1:27Speaker 4: to April third, nineteen eighty nine, right on that controversial
- 1:32Speaker 4: call at the end of the overtime, which seems while
- 1:35Speaker 4: leading by a point, Michigan's done the hate. He's a
- 1:38Speaker 4: terrific coach. He's a terrific coach, and he's done a
- 1:41Speaker 4: great job. A Shire has done a great job with Duke.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Duke has arguably the best player in the country in Boozer.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Who might be you never know, we might be seeing
- 1:50Speaker 4: Boozer next year on a nightly basis in Brooklyn. You know,
- 1:54Speaker 4: as the nets are just as well. These NBA teams
- 1:57Speaker 4: are just tanking to an embarrassingment level. But that's for
- 2:01Speaker 4: another story that we'll get to maybe today, a huge story. Yeah,
- 2:06Speaker 4: So Duke Arizona. You know, I think Saint John's has
- 2:14Speaker 4: a chance because the one thing Patino was gonna tell them,
- 2:18Speaker 4: and I think, I think Saint John's got screwed. There's
- 2:22Speaker 4: you tell me you win.
- 2:24Speaker 3: What did they end up?
- 2:25Speaker 4: Seventeen and one in the last eighteen games or eighteen
- 2:28Speaker 4: and one?
- 2:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yep.
- 2:29Speaker 4: Now when now now, before analytics, it was always how
- 2:34Speaker 4: you performed in your last ten twelve games would help you,
- 2:37Speaker 4: which helped you got seated? Well, they were eighteen and
- 2:41Speaker 4: one or seventeen and one. They won the regular season
- 2:44Speaker 4: in Big East, They beat you cont twice, they beat
- 2:48Speaker 4: you con two out of three, I mean, and they
- 2:53Speaker 4: send them out to San Diego. U kon't gets the
- 2:57Speaker 4: two seed. I do not believe Yukon is between a
- 3:01Speaker 4: five and an eight.
- 3:02Speaker 1: And I sell you, guys. I remember early on they
- 3:04Speaker 1: were losing some games. Uh, and then the whole thing
- 3:07Speaker 1: was while the non conference was weaker for Saint John's, Yes,
- 3:11Speaker 1: they had a weaker non conference, but also I remember
- 3:14Speaker 1: Yukon losing some games in the tournament play back in
- 3:17Speaker 1: the beginning of the year. I mean, it wasn't a
- 3:18Speaker 1: pretty sarp for them.
- 3:19Speaker 4: So it Saint John's got screwed.
- 3:24Speaker 1: They did, and look and look I'm not gonna get
- 3:27Speaker 1: personal here, but I do think character wise, Patino's got character.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I'm losing a little respect for herly. I had to
- 3:33Speaker 1: say it, I like all along beause he just he's
- 3:36Speaker 1: not he's got done that much of a character sometimes
- 3:39Speaker 1: on the court.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Well, his court side demeanor might be the worst since
- 3:44Speaker 4: the heyday of Bobby Knight. His court side demeanor during games.
- 3:48Speaker 4: He isn't a fantastic basketball coach.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I mean, fame, there's no doubt about it.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Yeah, but like.
- 3:59Speaker 1: But like or what it was that led Utah yukond
- 4:02Speaker 1: of be you know, seeded better. I just I don't.
- 4:05Speaker 1: I don't understand it. I don't even really accept.
- 4:10Speaker 4: You're right, Alex. This the gap is what is just
- 4:13Speaker 4: stunning to me. And he's a couple of others. I mean,
- 4:16Speaker 4: I think Arkansas, you win the Southeast Conference championship, he
- 4:20Speaker 4: had a four seed. I thought they were I thought
- 4:23Speaker 4: they would get a three.
- 4:26Speaker 1: You know, other than to the shows, A shout out
- 4:28Speaker 1: to JOHNA who was from JOHNA Pearl from Nebraska. Look,
- 4:32Speaker 1: Nebraska's got a great chance too. They have had a
- 4:34Speaker 1: solid season all around. They could make a surprise run
- 4:38Speaker 1: here too.
- 4:38Speaker 4: So they've never won an NCAA game. They never I
- 4:43Speaker 4: saw them lose to Penn in a first round game
- 4:46Speaker 4: back in probably Ryan wasn't even born yet. I don't
- 4:49Speaker 4: think like two thousand and one. Uh they lost the Penn.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Uh that that that that that year.
- 4:59Speaker 1: In the round.
- 5:00Speaker 4: So they have never won a NCAA game. Hoiberg's a
- 5:03Speaker 4: great coach. I mean he really is. And uh, I again,
- 5:09Speaker 4: the tournament is about players. You have to have the
- 5:13Speaker 4: players to win, but the tournament is about coaches. It's
- 5:16Speaker 4: always been that way. College basketball has been about coaches.
- 5:19Speaker 4: I mean we've seen it. Saint John's pre Patino. We
- 5:25Speaker 4: know we carry their games all those years, Syracuse post Beheim.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what a mess that's been. Yeah, and
- 5:37Speaker 1: but that and that's why Shire is so interesting because
- 5:39Speaker 1: everybody thought, well, after coach k they're gonna fall apart.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Shires really kept that program together since he took over,
- 5:45Speaker 1: no doubt about it.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Some way, if they always say, you don't want to
- 5:49Speaker 4: be the guy who succeeds the the Hall of Famer,
- 5:53Speaker 4: the iconic Coade, and you want to be the second guy,
- 5:57Speaker 4: well Shire is disproving that formula because he's doing a
- 6:01Speaker 4: great The guy's doing a great job. Yes, you know,
- 6:04Speaker 4: Duke's revenues are off the charts, but he's done a
- 6:09Speaker 4: hell of a job.
- 6:10Speaker 3: He really, I want to say.
- 6:11Speaker 1: In the a SEC though, I feel like the ACC
- 6:13Speaker 1: in general is not a strong conference. How do they
- 6:15Speaker 1: make it a stronger conference? It's just it seems like
- 6:18Speaker 1: there's only a few teams and the rest are bottom
- 6:20Speaker 1: of the barrel. And I had to hit that way.
- 6:21Speaker 1: That's what it seems like.
- 6:22Speaker 4: I mean, well it is. It's the truth right now.
- 6:25Speaker 4: And remember up until twelve fifteen years ago, it was
- 6:30Speaker 4: the conference. And when I was your age and Ryan's age,
- 6:34Speaker 4: there was no other conference but the ACC. Yeah, so,
- 6:40Speaker 4: but you're right, I think the Big twelve the SEC
- 6:45Speaker 4: are are the I mean, excuse me, the Big ten,
- 6:48Speaker 4: the Big twelve in the SEC, they's a strong conference.
- 6:51Speaker 4: The Big twelve is like off the charts and.
- 6:54Speaker 1: We're not doing any led courts this this around and
- 6:56Speaker 1: sixty fourt right, that was only one thing. Yeah, look
- 6:59Speaker 1: out trying that. It was kind of weird.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Actually, had twelve tried that glass fiberglass court which I
- 7:05Speaker 4: guess they use in Europe, and.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I slippery for the guys.
- 7:09Speaker 4: Well, yes, all right.
- 7:10Speaker 2: I mean you're not going to get the same traction
- 7:12Speaker 2: on a glass cord as opposed to just your typical
- 7:15Speaker 2: park hardwood floors or anything like that. And I mean,
- 7:19Speaker 2: especially for these these college stars, like you need that
- 7:23Speaker 2: traction on the floor one way or another. I mean,
- 7:25Speaker 2: whiles are they wiping their shoes and stuff on the sideline.
- 7:30Speaker 1: It was insane before they check in.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Well, apparently Commissioner your Mark at the Big twelve wanted
- 7:39Speaker 4: heard that one of the other conferences was going to
- 7:42Speaker 4: use that use a cord a fiberglass core and he
- 7:45Speaker 4: wanted to be the first one.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Well it sounds about right, though, considering that Luta, just
- 7:51Speaker 2: to get off topic for five seconds here, it's so
- 7:54Speaker 2: on brand for Brett your Mark, considering he was the
- 7:56Speaker 2: same guy who told Islander fans ten years ago that, oh,
- 8:00Speaker 2: you can just watch the game.
- 8:01Speaker 1: On your phone, on your phone, on your phone.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Well you're not fired up about that even ten years
- 8:07Speaker 2: after the.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Well, you know, I know him very well.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I know you're friends with them.
- 8:10Speaker 4: I was, well, I know him very well. I mean
- 8:13Speaker 4: we were we Yeah, we were friends. I'm not we're
- 8:16Speaker 4: not enemies now, but uh, you know, I've lost contact
- 8:19Speaker 4: with him.
- 8:21Speaker 1: They did business with us at the station for a while.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, he and he's a very innovative guy.
- 8:28Speaker 4: And uh, they had to change the court. One of
- 8:31Speaker 4: my friends said to me that one All Star Weekend
- 8:34Speaker 4: and an All Star Saturday they use it for himself.
- 8:37Speaker 4: I don't remember. I can't remember because I'm I really
- 8:40Speaker 4: don't focus in on All Star Weekend anymore. I don't.
- 8:44Speaker 4: But the tournament should be good. I'll watch it. I'm
- 8:48Speaker 4: a little disappointed, you know, because of the NIL and
- 8:53Speaker 4: the way they pay the players over since NIL started,
- 8:58Speaker 4: I guess in twenty one, twenty two two, and I'm
- 9:01Speaker 4: and I am pro n I l they players should
- 9:04Speaker 4: get money, but it needs to be controlled better.
- 9:08Speaker 1: It needs to be tied up big time, because it needs.
- 9:10Speaker 4: To be tied up big time. You're right, Alex, But
- 9:12Speaker 4: forty of the those great up what makes the first
- 9:16Speaker 4: weekend great? Those upsets they're gone. They're gone.
- 9:20Speaker 1: And you know, a couple of years ago, you remember
- 9:23Speaker 1: you were one of the first to say that that's
- 9:25Speaker 1: not gonna happen anymore. So yeah, now.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Say buck Nell beating buck Nell, beating.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Kansas, how about Saint Peters.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Yeah, Saint Peter's my alma mater, Fairley Dickinson. Yeah, UNBC
- 9:37Speaker 4: beating beating Virginia when they were the sixteen to one.
- 9:40Speaker 4: That's what makes that's what makes the tournament great, and
- 9:43Speaker 4: we're getting away from that, which is disappointing.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Well, I would love to see some lower seeds when
- 9:47Speaker 1: you know McNee always finds a way in this tournament's well,
- 9:50Speaker 1: they can score and they might be bandy today, I
- 9:53Speaker 1: don't know, we'll have to see what happened.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Well, Vandy can score too, Oh yeah, bandy. They're very
- 9:58Speaker 2: well balanced in and over itself. And I really wanted
- 10:01Speaker 2: to drink the McNee school lad and say, oh yeah,
- 10:03Speaker 2: they're just gonna upset again, no problem. I mean they
- 10:06Speaker 2: got a mere Aurican uh leading the team out out
- 10:10Speaker 2: of the court for March madness. You know what better
- 10:13Speaker 2: way to you know, cause chaos than just picking mcdees
- 10:17Speaker 2: in an ever brackets. But you know, Dandy can score.
- 10:20Speaker 2: They're a well balanced, well oiled machine and they're gonna
- 10:23Speaker 2: do well.
- 10:24Speaker 1: So are you guys saying the bracket busting might be
- 10:26Speaker 1: a little less than it has been in the years prior.
- 10:28Speaker 4: I think so remember last year. Last year, four number
- 10:31Speaker 4: ones got to the final four, which is very very unusual.
- 10:35Speaker 4: I mean the years where we've had eleven seeds going
- 10:39Speaker 4: and I was somebody was saying and I forgot who
- 10:42Speaker 4: I was listening to. They was he thinks that there's
- 10:44Speaker 4: a good chance they'll be chalk again to the final.
- 10:46Speaker 1: You know, do you know Rod Strickland, You know he's
- 10:48Speaker 1: he's coaching LU. Did you ever interact with him over
- 10:50Speaker 1: the years.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Or well, I mean he played against the Nets when uh,
- 10:54Speaker 4: when I was with the Nets, Uh, he was not.
- 10:58Speaker 4: He was never an necessarant coach when I was there.
- 11:00Speaker 4: But he's done a good job with LU. And I'm
- 11:02Speaker 4: gonna be honest with you. When Rod Strickland was a player,
- 11:05Speaker 4: and he was a great player at the Paul and
- 11:08Speaker 4: I never figured that he would be an outstanding coach.
- 11:11Speaker 4: He just didn't seem like coach coach type material. But
- 11:15Speaker 4: he's done a great job for LU, as does Speedy Claxton.
- 11:20Speaker 4: He was a great player and he was an excellent
- 11:23Speaker 4: player in the NBA IS with Hastra. Now he was
- 11:29Speaker 4: on I heard a little bit of an interview today.
- 11:31Speaker 4: He's very confident about this game. Against Alabama, and I
- 11:35Speaker 4: say Alabama's in turmoil. They're in turmoil.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Oh yes, with all the with the arrest happening, you
- 11:41Speaker 1: know that. But so that, I mean, you lose to
- 11:44Speaker 1: a fifteen seed in the SEC tournament and all misses
- 11:48Speaker 1: nothing to joke about. By the way, I actually think
- 11:50Speaker 1: that program is good. But you're the number two seed.
- 11:52Speaker 1: You lose to fifteen. That before even this other off
- 11:55Speaker 1: the court stuff happens. Let me believe he hopstam might
- 11:59Speaker 1: beat Albabata. I believe that.
- 12:00Speaker 5: Well.
- 12:02Speaker 4: Ryan coach Claxton in the interview this morning was praising,
- 12:09Speaker 4: was praising the guards, the Hofstra guards, and he's not afraid.
- 12:15Speaker 4: He's not afraid that he's going up against an SEC school.
- 12:17Speaker 4: So I hope that's an upset. It makes it fun,
- 12:21Speaker 4: it really exactly. I mean, that's what March is all about.
- 12:25Speaker 4: It all about the chaos. It's all about the upsets.
- 12:28Speaker 4: And what better way to have March, you know, at
- 12:30Speaker 4: least for me. And I will gladly be biased being
- 12:32Speaker 4: that Hofstra is my alma mater.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Yes, but I see Hofshi coming out on top of here.
- 12:37Speaker 2: I mean, they have not had a lot of distractions
- 12:41Speaker 2: unlike Bama in the week or so leading up to
- 12:44Speaker 2: the game, and they have proven, especially in the CAA tournament,
- 12:47Speaker 2: that they could show up when it matters. Preston Edmead
- 12:51Speaker 2: freshman becoming a Hempstead hero, sending Hofter to the CAA
- 12:55Speaker 2: Championship with that last second shot against tousand, three tenths
- 13:01Speaker 2: of a second to go, and then showing up for
- 13:03Speaker 2: the CIA Championship beating Monmouth and avenging the twenty twenty Demons.
- 13:11Speaker 2: When they last time they won the CAA Championship should
- 13:14Speaker 2: have been playing in March madness. Obviously that did not
- 13:16Speaker 2: happen because of the real world circumstances. Yeah, yeah, good
- 13:20Speaker 2: place now. But you know, first time in twenty five years, Yeah,
- 13:25Speaker 2: that this program is going to be dancing in March,
- 13:28Speaker 2: and I don't think they'll disappoint.
- 13:29Speaker 3: And Ryan tells you what's going on on the opposition side.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Ryan knows my connection and how I know Rick Cole
- 13:34Speaker 1: the DA the ad over there. So Rick Cole used
- 13:38Speaker 1: to coach volleyball for Dallon College many years ago, and
- 13:42Speaker 1: he almost forgot his playbook. I was announcing Queens at
- 13:44Speaker 1: the time. I'm the guy the game of his playbook
- 13:46Speaker 1: back after the game, like, here's here's your book, coach,
- 13:49Speaker 1: And now all of a sudden.
- 13:50Speaker 4: You did you hire it on him for during the game.
- 13:54Speaker 1: All of a sudden, he's an ad And look how
- 13:56Speaker 1: he's turned around a lot of ops and look at
- 13:57Speaker 1: the look at the and he's got coaching. Frid you
- 14:01Speaker 1: got Frank Catalan, Okay, coaching baseball, so right now you
- 14:04Speaker 1: got speed Claxton. I mean, he's really turned around all
- 14:07Speaker 1: those programs at Hobster. So I'm I'm very happy for him.
- 14:10Speaker 1: And uh, I'm hoping a lot for success, lots of
- 14:13Speaker 1: guys for Hobsters.
- 14:14Speaker 4: So yeah, guard that you were just talking about. Uh,
- 14:20Speaker 4: he was asked Coach Claxton was asked, are you going
- 14:23Speaker 4: to be able to keep them? And Coach Clason was
- 14:27Speaker 4: very tomp that he would that he's going to be
- 14:28Speaker 4: able to keep him.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Well, I think they. I mean, look in the transfer portal,
- 14:32Speaker 1: you don't know anymore. That's the n i L. The
- 14:34Speaker 1: trade reportal has changed everything. The n i L has
- 14:37Speaker 1: changed that too, and Low and I you know, it's
- 14:40Speaker 1: so funny. Lou and I were like, who won last year?
- 14:43Speaker 1: Because all these things are always switching you can't. I
- 14:46Speaker 1: used to know every title that was one down.
- 14:48Speaker 4: You remember every team that played in the Eastern Regionals
- 14:51Speaker 4: in the regional finals. Now you got to scratch your
- 14:54Speaker 4: head and say, oh, that's right, Florida one last year.
- 14:56Speaker 4: It's not it's not top of mind.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Although Houston run was pretty special and I had someone
- 15:00Speaker 1: from Houston on them during that final four weekend. But
- 15:05Speaker 1: it was Florida's time, I guess. So we'll have to
- 15:08Speaker 1: see what happens.
- 15:08Speaker 4: And they're going to be right up there again. There's
- 15:11Speaker 4: a chance that they could go back to back.
- 15:13Speaker 1: You know.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Again, I hate to keep pounding uh uh and praising
- 15:18Speaker 4: the coaches, but he Todd Golden is an excellent basketball coach,
- 15:23Speaker 4: you know. So, so it's it should it should be.
- 15:26Speaker 4: It should be a good well, especially these first two days.
- 15:29Speaker 4: We just watch you watching, you know, just.
- 15:31Speaker 1: These lower these lower I mean, look, if you're in Kansas,
- 15:34Speaker 1: if you're so and so, you want to advance. But
- 15:38Speaker 1: losing is not going to like hurt your chances of
- 15:40Speaker 1: getting the recruit because oh my god, the name brand.
- 15:43Speaker 1: But for those other schools that's you know, oh my god,
- 15:45Speaker 1: they have an upset. I want to join that team.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Do you find that happened sometimes, like you see the
- 15:49Speaker 1: team get upset, I want to be on that team
- 15:51Speaker 1: next year. Does that ever happen?
- 15:53Speaker 4: Well, it happens. But what what really what really helps
- 15:57Speaker 4: them is student admission for non athletes. There were a missions.
- 16:02Speaker 4: The missions go up, people wanting to attend to attend
- 16:07Speaker 4: that school, and.
- 16:07Speaker 1: That's I remember Miami Hio only had one loss, and
- 16:12Speaker 1: that was in the tournament last week. But you see
- 16:14Speaker 1: in the area, I mean the bars were jumping, they
- 16:16Speaker 1: were like your kids watched there too.
- 16:21Speaker 2: I mean you even see the scenes with Jack Hughes
- 16:24Speaker 2: and the Golden Gold. I mean they were holding watch
- 16:26Speaker 2: parties over the Miami of Oisle College bars and it
- 16:31Speaker 2: was the same stuff then too. I mean, people just
- 16:34Speaker 2: throwing their drinks and all that. Just a chaotic but
- 16:39Speaker 2: fun celebration all around.
- 16:41Speaker 3: But by the way.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Don't get this bias against Miami of Oile though. I mean,
- 16:47Speaker 2: well they were last night, as you were saying, Alex,
- 16:52Speaker 2: just last week and they were only a first four team.
- 16:56Speaker 3: They're only an eleventh seeds.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Which I kind of called. I was at the I
- 16:59Speaker 1: was at a restaurant. The other days. They're gonna be
- 17:01Speaker 1: a first four because of the way they're talking about them, right,
- 17:03Speaker 1: But like, I don't understand they go undefead the whole
- 17:06Speaker 1: season and one loss effects at all. I don't. I
- 17:08Speaker 1: don't because they're not a name brand. Is that what
- 17:10Speaker 1: it is?
- 17:11Speaker 4: That's what I mean.
- 17:11Speaker 2: You have Bruce Pearl too being one of the main
- 17:14Speaker 2: ones banging the table against Miami of Ohio too. I mean,
- 17:17Speaker 2: going on the CBS Sports set setslow, just completely discredit
- 17:21Speaker 2: Bruce defeated season.
- 17:23Speaker 1: We all know how eccentric Bruce Pearl was a coach,
- 17:26Speaker 1: but as an analyst, I never knew I'd scored that
- 17:28Speaker 1: gig because he was so off you know, he was
- 17:31Speaker 1: so off the wall even interviews. As a coach, I'm like,
- 17:34Speaker 1: no way he could become an analyst. But here he
- 17:36Speaker 1: is so.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Well And again getting back to what Ryan was saying
- 17:39Speaker 4: about him bashing like Miami of like Miami of Ohio
- 17:44Speaker 4: and Auburn which was which is now coached by his son,
- 17:49Speaker 4: was one of the first allegedly one of the first
- 17:52Speaker 4: four out and he and he said even after that,
- 17:55Speaker 4: he he said, I thought that, you know, Alburn should
- 17:58Speaker 4: have gotten in.
- 17:59Speaker 3: And so again you gotta love a Nepo baby.
- 18:01Speaker 4: What ca Yeah, yeah, no, And again you're not gonna
- 18:05Speaker 4: go against your kid.
- 18:06Speaker 1: I understand, well you're with Patinos in the press conference
- 18:08Speaker 1: after they won. He's because I think someone said, do
- 18:10Speaker 1: you wish the better Big East would be better or
- 18:12Speaker 1: something like that, like that's happened, Evan and my kids
- 18:15Speaker 1: got to recruit better, greater, greater basketball players. I'm like,
- 18:18Speaker 1: that's such a dig.
- 18:19Speaker 3: But I you know, that is such a Rick Patino
- 18:22Speaker 3: thing to say.
- 18:23Speaker 4: Absolutely, he was saying that tug and cheek too, just
- 18:25Speaker 4: giving his son a little jazz.
- 18:27Speaker 1: And you know, by the way, all those games they won,
- 18:31Speaker 1: those are the two toughest games. I mean, maybe it's
- 18:33Speaker 1: because of sun verse verse father, but Xavier held them
- 18:37Speaker 1: down pretty well.
- 18:38Speaker 4: They they had a chance to win both of those
- 18:39Speaker 4: games in the regular season. They did and.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Uh, of course he won nine hundred against his son,
- 18:44Speaker 1: which was very interesting to watch also, but so we'll
- 18:47Speaker 1: see now watching Clark Kellogg at the halftime show. Of course,
- 18:50Speaker 1: I pulled him on the radio with us back at
- 18:52Speaker 1: nine seventy with Ted Serranus over.
- 18:54Speaker 4: I remember I actually was in the hospital, uh, visiting
- 18:58Speaker 4: my my my late mom, and I was listening and
- 19:01Speaker 4: I said, wow, cluck between between halves, very impressive.
- 19:06Speaker 1: And then well I also have Vin Paresy on to
- 19:09Speaker 1: break the Mullen news during that one of those years.
- 19:11Speaker 1: So that was really quite a time.
- 19:14Speaker 4: I remember that.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Yeah, a lot of mark. We had a lot of
- 19:16Speaker 1: March Madness around here too. We did most certainly, we
- 19:19Speaker 1: definitely did. I played Ryan the call of a popkin
- 19:23Speaker 1: of a Gary Cohen with the Gibbs against in the
- 19:27Speaker 1: biggest tournament. I mean that call. I'll never forget.
- 19:29Speaker 3: We are from a room over two times.
- 19:32Speaker 4: That was our first year.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Yeah, so we've had a lot of moments, hopefully going
- 19:38Speaker 1: to back on radio. Who knows one day, right.
- 19:40Speaker 4: Louis absolutely never never say never. That's not gonna happen again.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Keep all right, Terminos, take always a pleasure having you
- 19:46Speaker 1: on the air with us.
- 19:47Speaker 4: I love being out with you guys.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Well, like a Alex Media PAGs perspective, you can listen
- 19:52Speaker 1: to Ryan's bracket breakdown, right, you posted that earlier today.
- 19:55Speaker 2: So yeah, just went up right before the first game
- 19:59Speaker 2: of March Manness between TCU and Ohio.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Had to be had to get.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Those bracket predictions out there.
- 20:03Speaker 1: One way or.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Another and just manifesting a hostra sweet sixteen run bookt
- 20:09Speaker 2: I I hope, Ryan, I hope.
- 20:12Speaker 1: So all right, I'm Ryan Padana. Alex Garett one like
- 20:16Speaker 1: a Ballex Media, thanks for joining us today here at
- 20:18Speaker 1: Terminalo's take. All right, Well, I've got a very good
- 20:22Speaker 1: friend on the line, a very big support of one
- 20:24Speaker 1: leg a Balx Media and our media n then welcome back.
- 20:27Speaker 5: Hey, thank you for having me on the show again.
- 20:30Speaker 5: First of all, Alex, you do a great job with
- 20:32Speaker 5: your stuff, and uh you're you do. You have amazing
- 20:36Speaker 5: content and obviously working with in the studio, you guys
- 20:39Speaker 5: do a great job over there. The kudos to you guys.
- 20:42Speaker 5: And yeah, so.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Yeah, everyd Why I have you on today because we're
- 20:48Speaker 1: obviously watching the March madness it's the first sixty four
- 20:51Speaker 1: And what's a big, overlaying, over arching part of all
- 20:54Speaker 1: this is the NIL topic and you and I didn't
- 20:58Speaker 1: know you were in that field, ill, I thought you
- 21:00Speaker 1: were on the media side, but you are an expert
- 21:02Speaker 1: at the NIL world. So tell us about what you're
- 21:04Speaker 1: doing in addition to producing for your own stuff and
- 21:07Speaker 1: then for Java, you know, and and that whole show
- 21:11Speaker 1: and then you got the NIL work, So tell us
- 21:14Speaker 1: about the NIL side of your career.
- 21:16Speaker 5: Yeah. Also not only NIL, I'm an agent too now too.
- 21:19Speaker 5: Also I'm an agent now too. So yeah, So for
- 21:23Speaker 5: the NIL, I'm a vice president partner for this company
- 21:26Speaker 5: called Nation's Best and we do a lot of excuse me,
- 21:31Speaker 5: NIL brand deals for young athletes high school, college and
- 21:35Speaker 5: then the youth, the younger kids like six sixth graders,
- 21:38Speaker 5: eighth grade, seven to eighth the you name it. So
- 21:41Speaker 5: so NIL is all about naming, image, liking, and then
- 21:44Speaker 5: protecting their brand. And obviously NIL deals are huge now
- 21:48Speaker 5: as popular as popping and all these athletes are. It
- 21:51Speaker 5: helps them with their money situations, financially their family and
- 21:55Speaker 5: also protecting their brand. So some of these athletes have
- 21:58Speaker 5: their own brand, but they don't have their brand. We're
- 22:01Speaker 5: our Nation's Best companies able to come up with the
- 22:04Speaker 5: brand for them. So also so they can have a
- 22:07Speaker 5: brand while they're playing and our c.
- 22:11Speaker 1: I know you you You normally cover high school sports
- 22:14Speaker 1: for the media, so the agent world has to be
- 22:17Speaker 1: sort of an easier transition because hey, you might be
- 22:20Speaker 1: covering them one day and then how do you not
- 22:23Speaker 1: mix the two where you're covering one day and them
- 22:24Speaker 1: signing them to a team the next day. Is there
- 22:26Speaker 1: like a conflict of interest there?
- 22:29Speaker 5: I mean sometimes there is, but but like as you know, Alex,
- 22:34Speaker 5: you you've been to some of these events too as
- 22:36Speaker 5: a as a media guy, and like for like for us, uh,
- 22:41Speaker 5: it we just have to work around the schedule. Obviously
- 22:44Speaker 5: you work around the uh the conflict is thing. So yeah,
- 22:49Speaker 5: it does have conflict, but at the end of the day,
- 22:52Speaker 5: it's it doesn't it doesn't really matter. It's just a
- 22:55Speaker 5: you're still working with that and obviously looking them for
- 23:00Speaker 5: I won't affect uh the other things. So yeah, so
- 23:03Speaker 5: the aging world is uh, it's been a good experience
- 23:06Speaker 5: for me so far, and I'm learning by the by
- 23:08Speaker 5: the day. One of my mentors is Lee Steinberg, so
- 23:11Speaker 5: I'm learning from him. So yeah, So the Asian world
- 23:14Speaker 5: has been great. And obviously with the NIL self and
- 23:17Speaker 5: shout I want to shout out to our CEO, Bob
- 23:19Speaker 5: Smith from a Nation's Best and he does a great
- 23:21Speaker 5: job and he is the one who brought me on
- 23:23Speaker 5: as a vice president partner. And Alex, we would love
- 23:27Speaker 5: to have you do some stuff for that too. If
- 23:29Speaker 5: you're interested for NIL. So let me know.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Now, one thing I brought you on was you posted
- 23:34Speaker 1: a graphic a couple of days ago about different ways
- 23:37Speaker 1: the n I L can support the student athlete. Can
- 23:41Speaker 1: you break down that graphic with us, because I want
- 23:43Speaker 1: I want people to know thinking here and how best
- 23:46Speaker 1: ways to really I guess capitalize on the n I L.
- 23:49Speaker 5: Right, yeah, so that map then excuse me, the you
- 23:55Speaker 5: guys called the ecosystem map the nation's best n I
- 23:58Speaker 5: L ecosystem map. So that breakdown will give you, by
- 24:02Speaker 5: the way, that's that's something unique about our company is uh,
- 24:05Speaker 5: we're coming up there. We're coming up with something new
- 24:07Speaker 5: every single day, and most are this we have we
- 24:12Speaker 5: have so we have different websites for h like parents
- 24:15Speaker 5: for the parents, for the brand, for the players, for
- 24:18Speaker 5: anybody to learn more about the n I L. Uh.
- 24:21Speaker 5: That's why we're unique because that map will that break
- 24:25Speaker 5: that map breaks out pretty much everything that we do
- 24:27Speaker 5: pretty much, and it gives a broader scale for people
- 24:30Speaker 5: to learn uh even more, and and and and that
- 24:33Speaker 5: breakdown it's like a that that that map is like
- 24:35Speaker 5: a march managed bracket that it gives it it's in
- 24:39Speaker 5: order and also it tells you specifically what we do there.
- 24:42Speaker 5: So that that that ecosystem map we just launched recently,
- 24:47Speaker 5: so anybody who wants to learn that they can use
- 24:50Speaker 5: that also or go to a website like n I
- 24:52Speaker 5: L Dream Team and IL Parent Parent Registry and IL
- 24:56Speaker 5: brand Registry. We have a whole bunch of things. So
- 24:59Speaker 5: that's what's unique about our nation NIL company out of
- 25:02Speaker 5: all the other NIL companies, and soup Dog is a
- 25:06Speaker 5: big support of their support of our company. So we're
- 25:08Speaker 5: trying to work with this athletes.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Also that he coaches, well, he had such a great
- 25:14Speaker 1: time at Team USA for both the Olympics and the Olympics. Now,
- 25:18Speaker 1: let me let me ask you this because obviously you've
- 25:21Speaker 1: been around the high school world and for a long time.
- 25:24Speaker 1: We can all agree NJA was making a lot of
- 25:26Speaker 1: money off these kids backs, right, So they're profiting off tournaments,
- 25:31Speaker 1: they're profiting off jerseys and where was the kids fair?
- 25:33Speaker 1: Sure a meal ticket doesn't really a meal, you know,
- 25:37Speaker 1: meal plans only cut how much the NJA was making. So,
- 25:41Speaker 1: as you were watching this from a media perspective, were
- 25:44Speaker 1: you happy with the NIL when it first started? And
- 25:47Speaker 1: what can be changed? What can be amended so it
- 25:48Speaker 1: doesn't go out of control either.
- 25:51Speaker 5: Wellah, the first time I started it was kind of
- 25:53Speaker 5: quck in question about it because I didn't really know
- 25:56Speaker 5: about too much. But when I started started reading it,
- 25:59Speaker 5: and then I got more in depth with it too,
- 26:02Speaker 5: and I started to realize that this brand, these deals,
- 26:07Speaker 5: any idea that's kept popping up, and it's starting to
- 26:10Speaker 5: help athletes and also these young and the family stew
- 26:13Speaker 5: it does help out with the family, but mainly the athletes.
- 26:16Speaker 5: And once and then when Bob Smith got me on
- 26:19Speaker 5: board as a vice president partner for his company, I
- 26:22Speaker 5: started learning more about it too. And there is ways
- 26:26Speaker 5: we can approve it too. There's always ways and you
- 26:29Speaker 5: can prove things, and that's what we're in the process
- 26:31Speaker 5: of keeping to keeping finding new ways to improve it.
- 26:34Speaker 5: But as of now, I mean ever since I joined
- 26:37Speaker 5: this company, and also the growth, it's unbelievable how these
- 26:42Speaker 5: athletes can get the resources. Now. Imagine if they had
- 26:47Speaker 5: Nils when when when Tom Brady or when Joe Smith
- 26:50Speaker 5: Joe Namath was playing, or something like from the past
- 26:53Speaker 5: like blast, Like if you had that from the past
- 26:56Speaker 5: and it would have been that it would have been
- 26:58Speaker 5: still it would have been crazy. But but now we
- 27:00Speaker 5: have this now with all the technology and all the
- 27:04Speaker 5: resources that these young athletes have now, it's amazing, remarkable,
- 27:07Speaker 5: And like I said, there's always room to grow it.
- 27:10Speaker 5: That's why we come up with new things every day.
- 27:12Speaker 5: And you see the map now, the different websites that
- 27:15Speaker 5: we have, and and it's it's always room to grow.
- 27:17Speaker 5: But right now it's like, is popular, how do we.
- 27:24Speaker 1: How do we let me see? How do we though
- 27:27Speaker 1: control the transport portal? I feel like that gets so abused.
- 27:32Speaker 1: I mean, is it is that going to be a
- 27:34Speaker 1: bad part of all of this?
- 27:36Speaker 5: Well, there's nothing I mean for the transfer portal. I
- 27:40Speaker 5: mean you can't. I mean you cannot. I mean the
- 27:42Speaker 5: players have to say in those type of things, So
- 27:45Speaker 5: I don't think you can really change it. But and
- 27:47Speaker 5: you can't prevent them from going places. And obviously it's
- 27:51Speaker 5: up to there. It's it's just up it's up to
- 27:53Speaker 5: them and their families what they want to do. But
- 27:56Speaker 5: I agree with you, Alex, I think the transfer porter
- 27:59Speaker 5: is getting answer portal is getting used a lot now
- 28:03Speaker 5: these days, and you see players come and go, leaving
- 28:06Speaker 5: from top Division three schools to go to Division two
- 28:09Speaker 5: or Division one, uh, to get more playing or actually
- 28:13Speaker 5: you see players from Division one player teams that are
- 28:18Speaker 5: not getting playing time to go to Division two to
- 28:20Speaker 5: get more playing time. So it's a it's a it's
- 28:23Speaker 5: a this pros to it and this consuit. But I
- 28:26Speaker 5: do agree with you. I think it's getting a lot
- 28:28Speaker 5: used now. But I don't think we can There's not
- 28:30Speaker 5: there's no I don't think we can change it because
- 28:32Speaker 5: it's up. It's ultimately, at the end of the days,
- 28:34Speaker 5: up to the players in my opinion.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Now, because as I say, you know, the call the
- 28:40Speaker 1: high school scene a little more. Are you noticing kids
- 28:42Speaker 1: being recruited a little younger now? Just you know, it's
- 28:45Speaker 1: sort of like all right, well this kid. Yeah, as
- 28:48Speaker 1: an agent, I mean, are you able what's the limit?
- 28:51Speaker 1: Can you can you get them out of high school?
- 28:54Speaker 1: Or while they're in high school? Like, what's the limit
- 28:55Speaker 1: on that?
- 28:56Speaker 5: Oh? Yeah? So for the younger athletes, we have like
- 28:58Speaker 5: six seven year old kids part of the company, so
- 29:01Speaker 5: you can, uh, you can give them deals now with
- 29:04Speaker 5: the six year old or sixth graders and of the
- 29:06Speaker 5: greers of young kids, so we have a couple of
- 29:08Speaker 5: them on the database of the nation's best company and
- 29:12Speaker 5: obviously we we so we send us all this up
- 29:16Speaker 5: to the parents to make sure that they're on board
- 29:18Speaker 5: first and then if they're interested, then we just we
- 29:21Speaker 5: talk and then uh, obviously Bob does the meeting CEO
- 29:25Speaker 5: or CEO and then uh, if they're interested to get
- 29:28Speaker 5: them on board signed to the deal you at a
- 29:30Speaker 5: young age, then we do that and we have it.
- 29:32Speaker 5: We do have a couple of players that are young
- 29:35Speaker 5: still its eight eight nine year old kids. So they're
- 29:38Speaker 5: talented some of them. One of them, a couple of
- 29:41Speaker 5: them plays five football and obviously, uh, the rest plays
- 29:45Speaker 5: regular football and different sports.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Also talk about you know, as they get older and
- 29:54Speaker 1: they progress, talk about watching that progression and you know,
- 29:57Speaker 1: seeing them in the college world. I mean, we always
- 30:00Speaker 1: have about the college to to prose adjustment. Right, it's
- 30:05Speaker 1: gotta be a high school or a college adjustment that
- 30:06Speaker 1: maybe these agents can help them, you know, you're your
- 30:09Speaker 1: comany can help them through.
- 30:12Speaker 5: Yeah, So it's always great to see the growth, uh
- 30:15Speaker 5: when they're young, and obviously now when they grow up
- 30:17Speaker 5: grow up to become star players and and uh and
- 30:20Speaker 5: once you see them go to college and from from
- 30:23Speaker 5: high school and and obviously the previous grades. It's mean.
- 30:28Speaker 5: And also you feel like you're part of the story
- 30:30Speaker 5: because you're helping them out throughout their journey and and
- 30:33Speaker 5: it's always great to see them succeed. And once you
- 30:35Speaker 5: see them in college and go to the pros holsto,
- 30:37Speaker 5: and that means you did your job because you helped
- 30:39Speaker 5: them out and along the way with their parents, with
- 30:41Speaker 5: their families, and they got to their goal. And and
- 30:44Speaker 5: that's always a dream for them and our thing. So
- 30:47Speaker 5: whenever we see that, then it's, uh, it gives us,
- 30:50Speaker 5: it makes us a better Our day gets better when
- 30:53Speaker 5: you when we see players get see them get opportunities, naything.
- 30:57Speaker 1: We see you posts a lot about different things. How
- 30:59Speaker 1: do you balance your time? I mean, you're producing one
- 31:01Speaker 1: thing and then and how about that show producing with
- 31:03Speaker 1: Joba Chamberlain, and then you're doing your own thing. But
- 31:06Speaker 1: I haven't seen too many of the interviews of late
- 31:08Speaker 1: are you. Are you focusing more on the agent side
- 31:11Speaker 1: of your your career or what?
- 31:13Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a great question. Yeah, I mean, uh, I'm
- 31:15Speaker 5: still willing. I'm still want to do interviews. It's just
- 31:17Speaker 5: a matter. But because my schedule I don't really have
- 31:20Speaker 5: time to do interviews right now. But right now we're
- 31:22Speaker 5: focused on on the nil stuff and obviously the agent
- 31:25Speaker 5: side of it, booking stuff for people.
- 31:28Speaker 1: You guys, I find so cool you've been making some
- 31:30Speaker 1: merch of all this stuff.
- 31:32Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, and uh and and also yeah, so I
- 31:36Speaker 5: would love to get back to the interviews at some point,
- 31:38Speaker 5: which obviously I'm my own show that I do, and
- 31:41Speaker 5: I obviously I produced other shows and and and help
- 31:44Speaker 5: out and then we've been helping you out to it. Uh.
- 31:46Speaker 5: It's it's just great. It's just amazing how how how
- 31:51Speaker 5: the growth has happening here. But yeah, I would love
- 31:53Speaker 5: to get back into the interviews soon. But right now
- 31:55Speaker 5: we're just focused on the other side of the business.
- 31:58Speaker 5: And uh yeah, so that's how I try to balance
- 32:01Speaker 5: it and and it's working. So also you got to
- 32:06Speaker 5: find time to make it for yourself. All so that's
- 32:08Speaker 5: the key, especially in this business. And I and you
- 32:11Speaker 5: and you know that too. And then I don't know
- 32:14Speaker 5: how you do it though you you're over you're all
- 32:16Speaker 5: over the place.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Well, I take all the time during the day and
- 32:18Speaker 1: do my own pod and then I know I've hit
- 32:20Speaker 1: that the other day. I'm also keeping an eye on
- 32:22Speaker 1: this last few seconds here.
- 32:24Speaker 5: Of TCU when they that this is a great game.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Five seconds to go for two. It's god, it looks
- 32:32Speaker 1: like TCU might pull this off. We'll have to see
- 32:34Speaker 1: what happens with four seconds left, sixty six sixty four.
- 32:39Speaker 1: But you play by play as we go along here, did.
- 32:43Speaker 5: You pick up? Did you pick them in your bracket?
- 32:45Speaker 1: I picked Ohio State? But you know what, I'm all
- 32:47Speaker 1: for upsets. I love this time of year with the upsets.
- 32:49Speaker 1: So yeah, we'll have to see. But go back then
- 32:54Speaker 1: A L. The n I L Collective is interesting to
- 32:56Speaker 1: me because are you talking about you know, like these
- 32:59Speaker 1: these ards what do they call them, like the collectives?
- 33:02Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, you talk about the the you mean the
- 33:09Speaker 5: car collecting?
- 33:10Speaker 1: Yeah, like is that what that means? Or what what
- 33:12Speaker 1: does nil collective mean?
- 33:14Speaker 5: Oh? And I so so yeah, we do have so
- 33:18Speaker 5: actually let me tell you this. So we have this
- 33:20Speaker 5: new company called the fat Heads, the n I L
- 33:23Speaker 5: fat Head thing. So so now they make they're making
- 33:27Speaker 5: uh for this is for the athletes. So they're making
- 33:30Speaker 5: uh like fat heads for the athletes in the n
- 33:33Speaker 5: I L space. So it's called n I l fat
- 33:36Speaker 5: heads and they few. They made a few already for
- 33:39Speaker 5: some athletes that we have and they want. They made
- 33:41Speaker 5: one for our CEO, and then they made one for
- 33:45Speaker 5: a couple of things art rap artists already. So it's
- 33:48Speaker 5: kind of cool these fat head things. And U are
- 33:52Speaker 5: not sorry, not fat big head. It's called big head. Uh,
- 33:55Speaker 5: it's called big head. There's a fat head out there ready,
- 33:57Speaker 5: but this new one is called big heads. So it's
- 34:00Speaker 5: kind of cool what they were doing just to create
- 34:03Speaker 5: some stuff. Create some creator have some creative things in
- 34:06Speaker 5: their minds when they do with it.
- 34:09Speaker 1: And thinking that there's like a three D card, I'm
- 34:11Speaker 1: trying to think of what they called n FT.
- 34:13Speaker 5: Is that including that's something different? I think that's different.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, we had grown up and watched the
- 34:21Speaker 1: Reggie Bushes of the world have their titles stripped because
- 34:24Speaker 1: four point three seconds left Ohio State as the basketball
- 34:27Speaker 1: uh in the second half down by two. Uh you
- 34:32Speaker 1: pass the man court line to second no good and TCU.
- 34:39Speaker 1: That's upset Ohio State. There's our first upset of the bracket.
- 34:44Speaker 5: Wow.
- 34:45Speaker 1: And you heard here one leg A Alex and Nithan
- 34:48Speaker 1: sixty six to sixty four. TCU downing number eight Ohio State.
- 34:52Speaker 1: But I was gonna I was gonna say, we grew
- 34:56Speaker 1: up watching Reggie Bush and we watched that while saga happen,
- 35:01Speaker 1: And here's the thing to me, these kids should have
- 35:07Speaker 1: been able to do their deals or whatever like that.
- 35:09Speaker 1: I mean, did you feel like that growing up too?
- 35:11Speaker 1: Like why are these kids able to do their deals? Yeah?
- 35:14Speaker 5: And like from that time, well, they didn't really have
- 35:18Speaker 5: the resources to to to their own things. But thinking back,
- 35:23Speaker 5: I did, I do think that they should have. I mean,
- 35:25Speaker 5: I imagine they did their own deals back in the day,
- 35:27Speaker 5: it would have been a different story. So I I
- 35:30Speaker 5: do question it, like question myself what if they had
- 35:34Speaker 5: the opportunity to do their own things? And but now
- 35:37Speaker 5: they but they didn't have the resource, But now they
- 35:39Speaker 5: have the resources where the players can do their own
- 35:41Speaker 5: things too.
- 35:46Speaker 1: And uh, and that's so important. And you're you're there
- 35:49Speaker 1: being the resource since story Elation's best and it and
- 35:52Speaker 1: have you learned a lot more about the business than
- 35:54Speaker 1: you realized?
- 35:56Speaker 5: Yes, I have since been I've been in with this company,
- 35:59Speaker 5: I've learned a lot. And like I said, shout out
- 36:02Speaker 5: to our CEO, Bob Smith, he does a great job.
- 36:04Speaker 5: Maybe we have a great staff on the board and
- 36:08Speaker 5: obviously great athletes that we work with and the that database,
- 36:10Speaker 5: and we're looking to more add more players on people
- 36:14Speaker 5: on the board like Jordan Poyer, he's interested in joining
- 36:19Speaker 5: on the staff doing some mental health stuff on this
- 36:22Speaker 5: uh for the players. So yeah, I've been learning a
- 36:26Speaker 5: lot be and since being the vice president vice president
- 36:30Speaker 5: for the company.
- 36:31Speaker 1: All right, nothing, you were down at the super Bowl meding,
- 36:33Speaker 1: we get a chance to talk, then, what's that like?
- 36:36Speaker 1: It's almost like a tradition for you to go down
- 36:38Speaker 1: there at that.
- 36:38Speaker 5: Point, right, Yes, this year super Bowl in San Francisco
- 36:42Speaker 5: was amazing and obviously we got to reconnect with the
- 36:45Speaker 5: players that being already and obviously make new connections and
- 36:50Speaker 5: radio was great we got and also the we got
- 36:53Speaker 5: invited to a lot of outside events, so that's been great.
- 36:56Speaker 5: So yeah, so it's been that true district is amazing
- 37:01Speaker 5: and obviously going to the Super Bowl parties and Lee
- 37:04Speaker 5: Steinberg super Bowl party.
- 37:06Speaker 1: But you never get to the game, right you're not
- 37:07Speaker 1: able to go to the game or we didn't.
- 37:10Speaker 5: We didn't. I decided not to go to the game
- 37:12Speaker 5: this year. I just I watched the game at my
- 37:14Speaker 5: am uncle's house there. You know, I think next year,
- 37:19Speaker 5: next year, we'll be at the game. Next year.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Oh, that would be awesome. All right. We watched these
- 37:23Speaker 1: tournaments right in March madness, even the championships and these
- 37:28Speaker 1: lower schools, and maybe from an athlete perspective too, it
- 37:32Speaker 1: is a good way to showcase these athletes that maybe
- 37:34Speaker 1: not yet their their flowers. Right. So when you see
- 37:40Speaker 1: these schools that maybe not are expected to win, win,
- 37:43Speaker 1: do your guys go like, all right, I want to
- 37:45Speaker 1: go here? Or do Are they very directed and their
- 37:48Speaker 1: minds are very focused on where they want to go?
- 37:52Speaker 5: Yeah? So some players they some some some players do
- 37:57Speaker 5: you have one specific team or one Pacific school they
- 38:01Speaker 5: want to go to? But and and others they don't
- 38:03Speaker 5: mind where to go a lot as long as they
- 38:05Speaker 5: showcase their talent and they get the playing time and
- 38:09Speaker 5: work hard. So no matter, no matter where they want,
- 38:12Speaker 5: no matter where they go, it's just a matter of
- 38:14Speaker 5: uh getting their showing their showcasing their talent and getting
- 38:17Speaker 5: to the next level.
- 38:18Speaker 1: All right, let me ask you a different way then,
- 38:20Speaker 1: because I think I'm trying to say do you think
- 38:24Speaker 1: that or do you have athletes that you work with, right, Yeah,
- 38:27Speaker 1: get highlighted because of this tournament, right, like all of
- 38:30Speaker 1: a sudden, your athletes blown up because oh my god,
- 38:32Speaker 1: look at the game he had in March bad.
- 38:33Speaker 5: Does that happen to Yeah, yep, Yeah, we do have
- 38:36Speaker 5: athletes that we work with that that gets highlighted like
- 38:39Speaker 5: that when when they play in a big tournament like
- 38:41Speaker 5: March Madness or any other tournaments. Yep, they do get highlighted.
- 38:45Speaker 5: And also they get more recognition too.
- 38:47Speaker 1: We just had the Combine. Anybody from your your nation's
- 38:50Speaker 1: best at the Combine and and any good workouts there
- 38:54Speaker 1: and any any prospects.
- 38:56Speaker 5: Uh, we have no, not really format Nation is the
- 39:00Speaker 5: best company, but we do. We do something. We connected
- 39:05Speaker 5: with the players, some of the players that we're at
- 39:07Speaker 5: the Combine. And yeah, so a lot of great talent.
- 39:10Speaker 5: Like I said, this draft has a lot of great
- 39:13Speaker 5: talent this year. So whoever, no matter what I think,
- 39:18Speaker 5: especially on the defensive side, there's a lot of great
- 39:20Speaker 5: talent the defensive side this year in the draft. You know,
- 39:23Speaker 5: it's also.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Becoming popular a little more. Maybe the schemes of the
- 39:25Speaker 1: world has helped along. College baseball is also becoming more
- 39:29Speaker 1: popular and the fact that people love these games, right,
- 39:33Speaker 1: I mean I see highlights even in February, and I'm like, boy,
- 39:35Speaker 1: college baseball, there's something there. Growing have a lot of
- 39:39Speaker 1: baseball athletes that you help out.
- 39:41Speaker 5: Yeah, we do help out with a lot of baseball aletes.
- 39:43Speaker 5: And actually I got three from the MLB Draft League
- 39:48Speaker 5: currently in our agency and that we're adding. We're looking
- 39:51Speaker 5: to add more baso players too.
- 39:54Speaker 1: As an agent, what's the easiest sport to scout or
- 39:58Speaker 1: to sign up and to really evaluate talent and and
- 40:01Speaker 1: what's the hardest for me? I feel like I watch
- 40:04Speaker 1: baseball camps like I've been around justin un baseball and
- 40:06Speaker 1: a couple of other things, the Platio's camp, and you
- 40:09Speaker 1: kind of can see the talent from very early on
- 40:12Speaker 1: and to drive some of these kids have. But what's
- 40:15Speaker 1: from your perspective, the best sport to try and pick
- 40:18Speaker 1: that right diamond in the rough, you know, versus the
- 40:23Speaker 1: toughest sport.
- 40:25Speaker 5: I think football has been the easiest. Well for me,
- 40:29Speaker 5: I can there's a lot of talents of football players,
- 40:32Speaker 5: plus it's easy for me. I think it's easier to
- 40:35Speaker 5: scout football players, and I think the hardest for me
- 40:38Speaker 5: has been I think hockey me a little bit.
- 40:43Speaker 1: Uh And that's a demographic thing because or geographic because
- 40:47Speaker 1: geographically we're not really a hockey college.
- 40:49Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, yeah, plus hockey you have to go
- 40:52Speaker 5: outside of the border too, like Canada and all. But yeah,
- 40:57Speaker 5: I would say football easiest, Baseball second basketball for me,
- 41:01Speaker 5: second baseball third, and then hockey and the rest.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Yeah, hockey is you know, that has a rise here
- 41:11Speaker 1: and in popularity. And you know, the Northeast is very
- 41:14Speaker 1: interesting because up in the Boston area and the QUINNIPIAX
- 41:18Speaker 1: those are the teams that really are available. But on
- 41:22Speaker 1: that it seems like the Michigan's and the Notre Dames
- 41:26Speaker 1: and all those teams are really what kids are going
- 41:28Speaker 1: to nowadays.
- 41:29Speaker 5: So yep, and but go go ahead, so sorry yeah,
- 41:34Speaker 5: also yeah, Michigan, Yeah, you're I agree with the like Michigan,
- 41:37Speaker 5: Notre Dame, and also Alabama you see Ohio State, but
- 41:42Speaker 5: also North Carolina now and then some of these other
- 41:45Speaker 5: schools too.
- 41:47Speaker 1: By the way, Duke in Sienna, I don't expect a
- 41:49Speaker 1: big upset there, although you never know. If basketball is funny,
- 41:52Speaker 1: you will have.
- 41:52Speaker 5: To that's crazy, like that's why I love like it,
- 41:55Speaker 5: I guessid. I love March Madden. I got Arizona winning
- 41:58Speaker 5: it all this year, so that's I have.
- 42:00Speaker 1: Duke will have to see if that gets busted on
- 42:02Speaker 1: the day one, but it'll be fun. Any success stories,
- 42:06Speaker 1: I mean we can plug nations vessels, but any success
- 42:08Speaker 1: stories before we go into Java the talk show a
- 42:12Speaker 1: Joba Chamberlain, I.
- 42:15Speaker 5: Think the success story was for me you're talking about
- 42:19Speaker 5: myself or well, no, I mean that.
- 42:21Speaker 1: You've seen and that you've helped make happen the nation's best.
- 42:29Speaker 5: I would say, bringing some of the So I would say,
- 42:33Speaker 5: bringing some of the new Jersey, at least from from
- 42:36Speaker 5: from my area into the company. And I think, uh,
- 42:40Speaker 5: I would say, obviously this the growth of the play,
- 42:43Speaker 5: the play, the growth of them as a player, and
- 42:46Speaker 5: also the family too. So I would say, uh, this
- 42:49Speaker 5: helping out these players and also especially the families.
- 42:52Speaker 1: The parents absolutely, and the joy on these kids faces,
- 42:56Speaker 1: I mean yeah, and the joy on these kids faces.
- 42:59Speaker 1: And then Senior Night's very emotional and all that. Yeah, God, it's.
- 43:04Speaker 5: Seter Knight is always a sad day time, sad time,
- 43:08Speaker 5: but it does it tells you that they're how hard
- 43:11Speaker 5: they work to get to that point.
- 43:13Speaker 1: All right, Let's say there's a kid that wants to
- 43:19Speaker 1: sign up, but you're not sure if they can make it,
- 43:23Speaker 1: you know, past certain level. How do you approach those
- 43:25Speaker 1: kids also, because look, yeah there's a good five percent
- 43:29Speaker 1: of all these sports and actually get to the show, right,
- 43:32Speaker 1: So how do you coach those kids that want that
- 43:36Speaker 1: believe they could do it, or maybe their parents believe
- 43:38Speaker 1: they could do it. But let's have a reality check here.
- 43:42Speaker 5: Well if that if it comes to that situation, then
- 43:46Speaker 5: I mean we still we still have conversations with them
- 43:49Speaker 5: to see how it can they can get better, and
- 43:52Speaker 5: we put them with the right resources too, so we
- 43:54Speaker 5: try to help them too in a different way or
- 43:57Speaker 5: we can try. We still to try to bring him on,
- 44:00Speaker 5: but uh, we have other resources that can we can
- 44:03Speaker 5: help them out to get better as a player, as
- 44:06Speaker 5: a as a person. So yeah, we still helped them out,
- 44:09Speaker 5: but we just guide him and guide these players in
- 44:12Speaker 5: a different way. All right.
- 44:13Speaker 1: Now, adaptive sports, as you know, I cover that a
- 44:15Speaker 1: lot on the show. I'm seeing wheelchair basketball on the
- 44:19Speaker 1: rise all these D one schools. Has Nations Best expanded
- 44:24Speaker 1: to cover adaptive sports as well?
- 44:28Speaker 5: Yeah, Actually we're trying to I have I got in
- 44:31Speaker 5: touch actually during Super Bowl week at the radio, I
- 44:33Speaker 5: got in touch with this guy who's who is who
- 44:36Speaker 5: served in the military. Now he's part of the wheelchair
- 44:41Speaker 5: some wheelchair Olympics. Yeah, so we're trying to we're trying
- 44:46Speaker 5: to work start working with these players, for these players
- 44:49Speaker 5: that have that are in wheelchairs, that are playing basketball
- 44:53Speaker 5: any other sports. So yeah, we're trying to get what
- 44:55Speaker 5: we want to expand uh everywhere. So we're trying to
- 45:00Speaker 5: make that happen to work with wheelchair athletes also.
- 45:03Speaker 1: So all right, so you have the agent and then
- 45:06Speaker 1: you have the recruiter for the college. How does that mix?
- 45:11Speaker 1: How does that get I mean, does the recruiter negotiating
- 45:14Speaker 1: for the school or who does the or I guess
- 45:17Speaker 1: i'd be a coach to negotiating for the school on
- 45:19Speaker 1: half of both school work.
- 45:21Speaker 5: Yeah, both does the negotiations and obviously the coaches are
- 45:25Speaker 5: obviously the team has to do the recruiting, all right,
- 45:28Speaker 5: So but we do all Once that happened, then both
- 45:32Speaker 5: of us do the negotiations together with the with the team.
- 45:36Speaker 1: When the QB from Tennessee went to u C l
- 45:39Speaker 1: A last year, That to me was a short fire
- 45:42Speaker 1: sign of where the sport is going.
- 45:44Speaker 4: Right.
- 45:44Speaker 1: Where this is going is if I don't get the
- 45:46Speaker 1: money here, I'm going to go elsewhere. But Nittan as
- 45:50Speaker 1: an agent, don't you also practice, Hey, you want to
- 45:53Speaker 1: look good for these schools, because that's going to show
- 45:55Speaker 1: your character. I mean, to me, bailing out of a
- 45:58Speaker 1: college program because they're not getting paid enough, that's not
- 46:01Speaker 1: a good character move right there. Yeah.
- 46:06Speaker 5: Yeah, so and plus you'll get that with some at
- 46:08Speaker 5: least worrying about only the money too. So but we
- 46:13Speaker 5: gotta there's but we still find a way to help them,
- 46:16Speaker 5: guide them to the right right path and get to
- 46:19Speaker 5: try to get them focused and and and and be
- 46:22Speaker 5: a team player. And if they do that, then they're
- 46:24Speaker 5: going to succeed. So but sometimes you'll get players that
- 46:27Speaker 5: only focus on themselves and only want the money. So
- 46:30Speaker 5: that's that's no good for us, and that's a bad
- 46:32Speaker 5: look on them. So we got and we always find
- 46:35Speaker 5: a way to push them to the right path. So
- 46:38Speaker 5: that's the goal.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it give me about the money, it's
- 46:40Speaker 1: got to be Hey, you know what this team's giving
- 46:43Speaker 1: me an opportunity, This college give me an opportunity and
- 46:47Speaker 1: you don't have to go inside the boardroom or the
- 46:49Speaker 1: negotiation room.
- 46:50Speaker 5: Right.
- 46:50Speaker 1: But the bad rap is these student athletes don't really
- 46:55Speaker 1: do the school part because of the how big the
- 46:57Speaker 1: school is and all that. But in your student athletes,
- 47:00Speaker 1: do you find a lot of them are about doing
- 47:03Speaker 1: the school work as well?
- 47:06Speaker 5: Yeah, so that's the main thing. Obviously academics is number one.
- 47:11Speaker 5: And obviously doing good in school. And that's the main
- 47:14Speaker 5: thing we bring up too to the athletes that we
- 47:16Speaker 5: work with our nation's best. And I'll you try to
- 47:20Speaker 5: try to say if you if you want to get
- 47:21Speaker 5: to your goal, then the go study in your books,
- 47:25Speaker 5: do good in school and and get and do and
- 47:28Speaker 5: get the right grades. And that's why parents always say
- 47:33Speaker 5: academics comes first before a sports so oh good.
- 47:36Speaker 1: So there's that mindset. And you know this happens in
- 47:39Speaker 1: a very local thing. I mean, how is it that
- 47:43Speaker 1: these maybe you know it from this perspective now, I've
- 47:47Speaker 1: always thought there's such a geographical shift between how the
- 47:50Speaker 1: recruiting goes in an SEC conference between the Big East Conference. Right,
- 47:56Speaker 1: is the Big East comers like that more local minded
- 47:59Speaker 1: compared to SEC, or is it that maybe kids are
- 48:04Speaker 1: dredging the local schools as much as they used to be,
- 48:06Speaker 1: Like where's the shift here?
- 48:09Speaker 5: Well, like I'll give you example. So when it comes
- 48:14Speaker 5: to like recruiting, UH from different schools, even smaller schools.
- 48:20Speaker 5: That's why I like coaches like Bill Belichick when it
- 48:22Speaker 5: comes to recruiting. He loves going going to getting players
- 48:26Speaker 5: from New Jersey like Ruggery players. And that's why I
- 48:29Speaker 5: respect him a lot, because he likes there's a lot
- 48:31Speaker 5: of talent and that the people don't know about in
- 48:34Speaker 5: certain states like New Jersey, we have a lot of
- 48:36Speaker 5: great talent. So when it comes to now these aces,
- 48:39Speaker 5: team coaches and teams do go in depth with the
- 48:44Speaker 5: hidden like hidden gem tailands and different states, especially New Jersey.
- 48:48Speaker 5: So I would say it's expanding, really expanded really well
- 48:51Speaker 5: to especially in college recruiting.
- 48:54Speaker 1: So well, I know this, it's gonna be a crazy
- 49:01Speaker 1: It's gonna be a crazy few weeks here with March madness.
- 49:04Speaker 1: And I want to get you out because look around
- 49:07Speaker 1: this time is when the college world is highlighted and
- 49:09Speaker 1: I feel like Nation's best and you should have a
- 49:13Speaker 1: face to this because maybe there's a kid that gets
- 49:16Speaker 1: intrigued by this and okay, I want to do that next.
- 49:19Speaker 1: So you're there to support that journey, I gotta believe.
- 49:23Speaker 5: Yep. We're all here to support everyone obviously, every and
- 49:28Speaker 5: try to get to try to get people into the goals,
- 49:32Speaker 5: into the into the pros or wherever they want to be.
- 49:35Speaker 5: So that's always a goal. So pushing each other to
- 49:38Speaker 5: the goat path, to the right path.
- 49:40Speaker 1: All right, let's talk about the talk show with Java Chamberlain.
- 49:43Speaker 1: How's that been going.
- 49:45Speaker 5: Good? Uh so, Joba right, yes, yes, them out. But
- 49:51Speaker 5: the stay tuned. There's gonna be a name change here
- 49:53Speaker 5: pretty soon with the show. Java is gonna step down
- 49:56Speaker 5: as we speak. He's busy with his son and also
- 49:59Speaker 5: he's gonna be a new name. But so we added
- 50:01Speaker 5: Quentin Copples to our team. He's a former New York
- 50:04Speaker 5: Jets player, so he'll be added to the staff to
- 50:07Speaker 5: replace Java for now. So there's gonna be a new
