- 0:24Here's Pastor Ed to take us into our study.
- 0:28Amen, Amen. Open your Bibles to Proverbs
- 0:31chapter 3. That's where we're going to
- 0:33start. And then we're going to land in
- 0:35Romans chapter 12. So 2 places Proverbs chapter 3,
- 0:39Romans chapter 12, our topical series to launch off the year.
- 0:45We've entitled it take it all. And today the Bible studies
- 0:49entitled you can have it all, Lord, because if we're ever
- 0:53going to take it all, we need to take the posture ourselves of
- 0:56you know what, Lord, you can have it all.
- 0:58You can have every part of me, every part of my life.
- 1:02I want to give you as we wrap up this series, we know it's it's
- 1:06been an encouraging time, but it's also been a very
- 1:08challenging time, a very stirring time as we look to the
- 1:11Lord for all that he wants in our lives.
- 1:14I know it's just another new year and it's another calendar
- 1:16change, but I mean, you got to take the perspective of no, it
- 1:19is another new year. It is a flesh, a fresh slate.
- 1:23There is an opportunity to really make substantive change
- 1:27in our lives. It doesn't have to be huge and
- 1:30overwhelming, but for some of you it might be.
- 1:32It can also just be some substantive change that's small
- 1:36and incremental, but it needs to happen in order to grow in the
- 1:41Lord and through our studies. He's growing us.
- 1:43He's changing us. We're battling.
- 1:46We learned last time and I was really encouraged last time as
- 1:49we were looking at Elijah and his servant, as his servant went
- 1:53out in the morning and saw they were surrounded by an army.
- 1:57And and Elijah said, hey, you know, Lord, open his eyes.
- 2:00And God did open his eyes and he saw that although he was
- 2:03surrounded by an army, the army was surrounded by the Lord and
- 2:06by the armies of Lord and sort of walked forward with spiritual
- 2:10eyes into this new year is also very important.
- 2:14And like Joshua in the nation of Israel, then we get to take all
- 2:19that God has given us. We're not creating things, we're
- 2:22not demanding things, but rather we're looking at the new year
- 2:26and saying whatever you have for me, Lord, I want it all.
- 2:30I want every part of it. I, I want victories that you
- 2:33have for me. I want to be broken of
- 2:35addictions that that I might be caught up in.
- 2:37I want to see strength in my singleness.
- 2:39I want to see my marriage change.
- 2:41I want to be able to see and take all the you have for me.
- 2:45I want to hold nothing back from you, and I'm asking God for you
- 2:48to hold nothing back from me in Christ.
- 2:52Now. Proverbs chapter 3 contains a
- 2:56passage of Scripture that is very popular in memorizing.
- 3:01I hope that you have memorized it.
- 3:03But because it's very popular and because it's quoted so much,
- 3:08scriptures that are popular and quoted so much begin to lose
- 3:12their edge in our lives. And I want to bring back the
- 3:14edge to you. I want to sharpen the edge of
- 3:17this Scripture and remind you the fruit and the joy that comes
- 3:22from putting your complete trust in the Lord.
- 3:25That's how it started. By the way, as a new believer,
- 3:29this is how it started. You put your complete trust in
- 3:33the Lord. Now, of course, some of you,
- 3:35you, you became a believer in a godly home.
- 3:38You were raised in the Scriptures, you were raised in
- 3:41church, you were raised to avoid sin.
- 3:44And your life has bore the fruit of that complete trust that
- 3:48started very young. And it's such a great gift that
- 3:51God gave you to be born in a home like that for others of us,
- 3:56we were saved and born again much later in life, having
- 4:00tasted the ugliness of sin and paid the consequence for such.
- 4:04And just dealing with things and, and, and having to, to live
- 4:08life apart from God until finally, I mean, I remember like
- 4:12it was yesterday, until finally I came to the place where I'm
- 4:14just like, Lord, you can have my life.
- 4:17What I have done with it, it is I've ruined it and you can have
- 4:22my life. I received the forgiveness of my
- 4:24sins, I turn my back on my past and you can have it all.
- 4:28And that's how it starts. That's how it starts.
- 4:31I remember very distinctly, I mean as a born again believer in
- 4:36my early 20s, I had not even read the Bible by the time I was
- 4:40in my early 20s, never read the Bible.
- 4:42I mean I read portions of it. I remember as a very small child
- 4:46being in Sunday school as a kid and learning Bible lessons on
- 4:50these flannel board things that they had up there to illustrate.
- 4:53I remember that. But I, I also know that up until
- 4:56I was born again, I had lived my own life, my own way.
- 5:00And yet when I was born again, I would come and I'm like, OK, I
- 5:03would sit in a Bible study like you.
- 5:05I would have my pen ready. I have my notes and I'd be
- 5:09jotting down what I heard the pastor say, how he said it.
- 5:12And in my pastor Jeff, if he shared something that was
- 5:15action, you know what I did? I did it.
- 5:18He said to go do something. I did it.
- 5:20He said to forgive. I'm like, OK, I don't even quite
- 5:22understand, but I forgive Lord and I share.
- 5:24And I, I was looking at life like, hey, I've never heard this
- 5:29before. I hear a Bible study, never
- 5:31heard it before, heard a Bible study, never heard it before.
- 5:33Over and over and over again until I started clocking some
- 5:39years on my walk with the Lord. And guess what?
- 5:42I'd be sitting in a Bible study and I would hear it and I'd go,
- 5:45I heard that before. And I wasn't so quick to act.
- 5:49Well, I learned that or you know, I heard another guy say
- 5:51something. And so I don't quite agree with
- 5:53that and I'm not. And before you know it, my
- 5:56complete trust in the Lord, my complete surrender to the Lord
- 5:59became partial. And I believe God for the
- 6:03salvation of my sin. I believe God for the
- 6:05forgiveness. I, I believe so much about God,
- 6:08but also I have my own ideas and I had my own thinking.
- 6:13And I listen to this guy over here and this guy over here, and
- 6:15I began to minimize my complete trust in the Lord.
- 6:21So I memorized this scripture beginning in verse 5 very early
- 6:28on, not knowing how significant it would be the rest of my
- 6:32spiritual life. In verse 5, we learn and we're
- 6:36instructed this is wisdom from God.
- 6:39Trust in the Lord with all your heart.
- 6:43Lean not on your own understanding.
- 6:46In all your ways acknowledge Him and notice the promise.
- 6:50He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes.
- 6:56Fear the Lord and depart from evil.
- 7:00It will be held to your flesh and strength to your bones.
- 7:05Honor the Lord with your possessions and with the first
- 7:08fruits of all your increase, so your barns will be filled with
- 7:13plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.
- 7:18My son, and by application, many of you, my daughter, do not
- 7:23despise the chastening of the Lord, nor detest his correction.
- 7:27For whom the Lord loves, he corrects, just as a father the
- 7:33son in whom he delights. Happy is the man who finds
- 7:37wisdom and the man who gains understanding.
- 7:42Here's a very clear instruction for all of us not to lean on our
- 7:47own understanding. But that's exactly what we do
- 7:50the longer we walk with the Lord.
- 7:52There's something about us where we think once we've learned
- 7:55something, that's all we need to learn about that topic.
- 7:59Even spiritually, it's such a dangerous thing to think that
- 8:03we've got the key. I tell the pastor's this,
- 8:06including myself all the time because we minister to a lot of
- 8:10people throughout the week. We have these calendar
- 8:12appointments and we know this time and that time and we're
- 8:15going to meet with someone. And, you know, maybe it's a, a
- 8:18marriage concern and you see it on the calendar and you get a
- 8:21little bit of information on it and you, you have to be careful
- 8:24not to go. Well, you know, I've dealt with
- 8:25this so many other times. This, this one's going to be
- 8:28easy. I already dealt with this and I
- 8:29already know how it's going to go.
- 8:31And I'm like, no, you have no idea how this is going to go.
- 8:35Even though you may have dealt with this same issue many, many
- 8:38times before, you have never ever dealt with this issue with
- 8:42them in this moment. You have to be open.
- 8:45You can't lean on your own own understanding of well, you know,
- 8:48this just seems to be the kind of situation that God's always
- 8:51bringing my way. Well, that's fine.
- 8:53And that's from the Lord. I would agree with that.
- 8:55But the approach can never be, I already understand, I already
- 8:58know, I've got this, I've got this, You know, it's amazing
- 9:01because you're like, oh, you know, I have of it all.
- 9:04I don't need you anymore, God, I know how to do it.
- 9:06So watch me. Oh, God will watch you fall on
- 9:09your face for sure. We need to trust in the Lord in
- 9:15every area of our lives. Like for, you know, with the
- 9:18marriage issue, I know what the Bible says.
- 9:20I know what the Bible says. Husbands, love your wives as
- 9:24Christ loved the church, but the application of that, how it's
- 9:28delivered, where it's delivered is going to be very dependent
- 9:32upon the person in front of me and me listening to them and
- 9:35being open to the Holy Spirit of what exactly is the issue that I
- 9:40might use God's word in a very careful way to help them get
- 9:44back on track. Wives, submit to your husband's
- 9:47as unto the Lord. Yeah, but what's the application
- 9:50exactly? What are we dealing with?
- 9:52I need to trust in the Lord with all my heart.
- 9:56I can't lean on my own understanding.
- 9:58I really don't know exactly what I'm dealing with until you begin
- 10:02to talk with me until we begin to to talk it out and see what
- 10:07the and even after we talk it out, I still may not know and
- 10:10must depend upon the Lord. The promise is is if I'm
- 10:14acknowledging him and I'm trusting him, the Bible says
- 10:18he'll direct me and in the direction in verse 7.
- 10:21It's like, don't you be wise in your own eyes?
- 10:24And that's how we need to enter into the new year, any new year,
- 10:28any new day, any new week, any new month that we're not wise in
- 10:31our own eyes, not leaning on our own understanding, but trusting
- 10:35God in every area of our lives, knowing that we can rely and
- 10:40trust in our great God who has a specific plan for our lives.
- 10:45We've been using the phrase divine destiny.
- 10:48I love that or we also been adding the phrase intended end.
- 10:53God has an intended end. So you can put these three
- 10:55together. Divine destiny, intended end or
- 10:59the will of God for my life. I mean that's how it's usually
- 11:02used. What is God's will for my life?
- 11:06What does he really want to accomplish?
- 11:08What we read, you know, a lot of people that are in a place of
- 11:11waiting or I don't know what God's doing in my life.
- 11:13I don't know what his will, what what his will is for me.
- 11:16We read in the Psalms today. Go back to Psalm 37.
- 11:19I just want to show you this because we read this together,
- 11:23but we'll read it for everyone joining us outside of the room
- 11:26today, maybe on the radio online.
- 11:29Look, I always like to, I'm often like to bring someone to
- 11:33Psalm 37 and go. Are you in a place of waiting?
- 11:35Yes. I just don't know what to do.
- 11:37And are you in a place of wanting to know the will of God?
- 11:39Yes. I don't know what the will of
- 11:40God. Well, if you notice here from
- 11:42verse 3 of Psalm 37 all the way down to verse 8, I have counted
- 11:48at least 13 things you can do while you're waiting on the
- 11:52Lord, 13 things just by looking at the verbs, verse three, you
- 11:56can trust in the Lord right now and you can do good.
- 12:00You can dwell in the land. You can feed on His
- 12:03faithfulness. How about this number 4, you
- 12:06wanting to determine the will of God for your life?
- 12:08Well, delight yourself also in the Lord and He will give you
- 12:12the desires of your heart. How about this verse 5?
- 12:15Commit your way to Him, trust also in Him, and he shall bring
- 12:20it to pass. Sounds like Proverbs 3.
- 12:23Sounds like the psalmist really has grasped Proverbs chapter 3
- 12:28verses 5678. That whole section there.
- 12:32It's important that we learn to trust God even though we have
- 12:37many times before. We don't have to learn the hard
- 12:40way. We don't have to fall on our
- 12:43face. The key is to trust in the Lord,
- 12:46to acknowledge Him, to follow His precepts, to trust Him even
- 12:51when we don't understand what what we've heard in the light.
- 12:54We trust when it's dark. We hold fast to Him.
- 12:58We know that He's gotten us through things before.
- 13:00He's going to get us through this.
- 13:02He, we know. He's given us clarity before.
- 13:04He'll give us clarity now. We know that even if we don't
- 13:07have the full picture, we have enough of it to know that God is
- 13:11faithful even when we're faithless.
- 13:14As we enter into the new year and we step in with this
- 13:17excitement like I am like God has really stirred me up
- 13:19personally in areas of my life, both personally in my family and
- 13:23my home, but also as a pastor. I'm really taking this to heart.
- 13:27Take it all at. It's all for the taking.
- 13:30This is no time to rest and just put it in neutral and coast into
- 13:34the sunset. There is still more of this
- 13:36city, more of this state, more of this country to take for the
- 13:40gospel, and I want to step into it.
- 13:42However, if, if I'm going to take it all, I need to learn the
- 13:48posture before God. No, no, God, you can have it
- 13:52all. It starts there.
- 13:55If you're thinking of words that will help you take it all, I
- 13:58want to give you some. I want to give you some
- 14:00questions you can ask to examine your life.
- 14:02For example, if we want to take it all, we have to choose.
- 14:07You have to have it, God. I'm giving it to you all.
- 14:10Number one, you need to take the posture of surrender and you can
- 14:13ask yourself how surrendered am I?
- 14:16Is it 50508020 I could you assess it like how surrendered
- 14:21am I? I'm certain someone listening to
- 14:23me right now could say very definitively, I'm not very
- 14:26surrendered at all. I'm I'm not not really happy
- 14:29with the way I'm just going to take things into my own hands.
- 14:32I'm going to do my own thing. Well, how surrendered are you?
- 14:35Let me give you another word to consider.
- 14:37How submitted are you to God? Submission.
- 14:42You can ask yourself, how submitted am I?
- 14:44I mean, how much of it me? You know, like you look at your
- 14:47life, you go like you're very well educated, you're very
- 14:50successful, you've got a lot of experience under the belt and
- 14:54it's made you less surrendered to God and it's made you less
- 14:58submitted. When in reality, God is giving
- 15:00you more responsibility That really requires more submission,
- 15:05more surrender in order to truly enjoy all that God has given you
- 15:11in your personal life life, in your career, in your spiritual
- 15:14life. How about this one?
- 15:15Another word to consider is how yielded are you?
- 15:19The idea of yielding this is like flexibility.
- 15:22How flexible are you? Does it always have to be your
- 15:25way or the highway? Or are you open to the
- 15:29opportunities and the options that God has for you?
- 15:31Like you, Just so you know, I, I would, I, I would dare say some
- 15:35have already planned out the entire year 2025.
- 15:38There's a few planners in the house, I'm sure.
- 15:40But what if God wants you to change course in June?
- 15:44Will you? Are you open to it?
- 15:47Or are you so, you know, stuck on your ways that even if the
- 15:51Lord shouted to you that he wants to make you, he wants you
- 15:54to make a left turn or a right turn, you're just not yielded.
- 15:56You're just not you. You don't like, hey, I got my
- 15:58way. This is the way it's got to be.
- 16:00This got to be. This is the way it's got to be
- 16:01for my kids. This is the way it's got to be
- 16:03for my schedule. This is the way it's got to be.
- 16:05And it's like, wait a minute. Trust in the Lord with all your
- 16:08heart. Lean not on your own
- 16:10understanding. How yielded are you?
- 16:12And then the final word I would add, as we declare to God, that
- 16:16posture, if you can have it all, Lord is how obedient are you?
- 16:21And I would even add a little word, how quick are you to obey?
- 16:25Because you know if you don't obey quickly, you'll talk
- 16:27yourself out of it. You know that and you don't want
- 16:30to obey quickly, especially on big ones.
- 16:32I mean the small ones, you want to build up and be faithful in
- 16:34the little ones. So when a big one comes, you can
- 16:36just keep going. But like if you have an area
- 16:38where God has spoken to you and you're not quick to obey, you
- 16:41will you will either forget, talk yourself out of it.
- 16:45I think of how many times we sit in a setting like this, God
- 16:48speaking to our hearts and by the time we get to the car, we
- 16:51forgot. She's like, man, I know the Lord
- 16:53wanted me to do something, but you know, Chipotle, should I get
- 16:56walk or not walk? I'm not sure.
- 16:58Like, I don't know how much, how much money do you have?
- 17:00How much is on it? Like you forget it.
- 17:03And the Lord wants us to be quick to obey so we can enjoy
- 17:06all that we he has for us. So that leads us to Romans
- 17:10chapter 12, because it leads to another question.
- 17:13And the question is, well then how, Ed, How?
- 17:18And that's a great question to ask.
- 17:19How, how do I find myself in a place where an A posture of
- 17:24surrender, submission yielding quick obedience.
- 17:29Notice here in chapter 12 in verse one.
- 17:33Now, by the way, I have when we were studying through Romans, I
- 17:38did a series of studies in Romans chapter 12.
- 17:40I forget how many there were on the topic of how to discover the
- 17:43will of God for your life. We're going to look very briefly
- 17:47at the first verse and a little bit of the second verse, but we
- 17:50went way in depth on this topic. If this is an area that you just
- 17:54really sense you've been wanting an answer on, I would encourage
- 17:58you go to the app, go to the website right there in Romans
- 18:01chapter 12. I went through boom, you know,
- 18:03study after study after study, looking at different aspects of
- 18:07how to discover the will of God, how to see it and learn it and
- 18:11grow in it. But notice here in verse one.
- 18:14I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God,
- 18:19that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy,
- 18:24acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
- 18:28And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the
- 18:34renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and
- 18:39acceptable and perfect will of God.
- 18:45This is a strong word here in the English.
- 18:48It's the idea of begging or pleading.
- 18:50Someone comes and say, I'm pleading with you.
- 18:53I'm wanting you to get this. I really want you to grasp this
- 18:56for your life. But if you like to write in your
- 18:58Bible, circle the word beseech and let's write the Greek word
- 19:02there. You may be surprised what the
- 19:04original word is. It's the word para kaleo.
- 19:07Para PARA means to come alongside.
- 19:11Kaleo, KALEO means to come alongside to help.
- 19:16That's what the word means. Para kaleo.
- 19:19You Bible students, you may hear in that word a very familiar
- 19:22teaching from Jesus. You'll remember when Jesus spoke
- 19:26of the coming of the Holy Spirit that he used the Greek word
- 19:29paracletes to describe the Holy Spirit.
- 19:33So you have these together, the idea of someone that comes
- 19:35alongside to help. So when Paul says this very
- 19:38strong word, when he writes to us as a pastor, he writes to
- 19:42Rome then and he writes to us now the church here in Colorado.
- 19:45He says this, I'm coming alongside of you because this is
- 19:50very important for your life. This key.
- 19:53After all the theology that he teaches and there's some heavy,
- 19:57solid, amazing theology in Romans.
- 20:00After he lays that out and then he goes through with God's heart
- 20:03for the nation of Israel in Romans 9:10 and 11:00, powerful,
- 20:07good, solid, strong theology. He says, OK guys, this is really
- 20:13where the rubber meets the road. I'm begging you.
- 20:17I'm begging you notice by the mercies of God.
- 20:21He lightens it even more and he says, I'm telling I'm not
- 20:24demanding you, I'm not commanding you, even though Paul
- 20:28could say that he had the authority to do so.
- 20:31But rather I'm coming alongside of you as your pastor, as your
- 20:35friend, as a disciple, as a counsellor.
- 20:39You guys are my brothers, You're my sisters, your brethren.
- 20:45I really want you to track with me here on the basis of the
- 20:48mercy of God, Mercy. Whenever you think of mercy
- 20:52biblically, when you hear the word mercy, grace, judgment, put
- 20:56them all together. Those 3 words go together and it
- 20:59will help you to understand anytime you see them in the
- 21:01Bible, for example, Judgment. Judgement.
- 21:04When you think of the judgement of God, judgement is simply
- 21:07getting what you deserve. That makes sense.
- 21:09When a judgement is handed down, you are getting what you
- 21:12deserve. It You're standing before a
- 21:14judge. You're guilty of a particular
- 21:16infraction. The judge declares you guilty,
- 21:18comes down with the gavel, and gives you the sentence.
- 21:21That sentence, whatever is given to you, is the judgement of the
- 21:24court. It's judgement.
- 21:25You get what you deserve. If you are guilty, then you
- 21:30receive the judgement. The second word that's used in
- 21:34the Bible. Consistent with that is mercy.
- 21:36When you think of mercy, I want you to think of it this way.
- 21:38Judgement is getting what you deserve.
- 21:41Mercy is not getting what you deserve.
- 21:45Whenever you hear mercy, when someone's merciful for you with
- 21:48you, you deserve it, but you don't receive it.
- 21:52I always think back of the sibling little spats and
- 21:55wrestlings that go on and you're wrestling with your sibling and
- 21:58you're fighting to the finish and they finally get you and
- 22:01they pin you down and they're ready to pummel you into the
- 22:03ground. What do you cry out to them?
- 22:05Judgement, Give me. Judgement, pummel me.
- 22:09Of course you don't. What do you cry out for?
- 22:11Mercy. Even that same scenario with the
- 22:13courthouse. You may ask the judge for mercy,
- 22:17and what are you asking for? Please don't give me what I
- 22:21deserve, mercy. And then the final word that
- 22:24goes, which is the greatest word of all three of them, is grace.
- 22:28And grace is receiving what you don't deserve, especially as it
- 22:34relates to God. God, the judgement of God,
- 22:36eternity apart from him, the mercy of God receiving that
- 22:41which we don't deserve. No longer facing judgement, but
- 22:44by the grace of God we receive what we don't deserve, the full
- 22:49complete forgiveness of our sins through the sacrifice of Jesus
- 22:54Christ. So when Paul writes to Romans
- 22:57then and he writes to us, he says, look, these are strong
- 23:00words. This is a strong action
- 23:03theology, teaching, teaching, teaching, teaching.
- 23:06Now here's what I want you to do with it.
- 23:08The very first thing he says, I want you to consider is by the
- 23:11mercy of God, I'm not being heavy-handed with you.
- 23:15I'm not wanting to manipulate you or guilt you.
- 23:18I know when when often there are some of you that were raised in
- 23:23a very manipulative, guilt ridden home or you were raised
- 23:27in a religious system that was very manipulative and guilt
- 23:30ridden, that when you hear strong exhortations, it's
- 23:34filtered through the way you were raised or the way that you
- 23:36grew up. But that's not what Paul's
- 23:39saying here. Neither is it what I'm saying to
- 23:41you today. That's not how Paul is
- 23:43presenting it. He makes sure by adding it's by
- 23:45the mercies of God. I want you to remember.
- 23:47I want you to remember what God has done for you.
- 23:49I want you to remember how good he's been to you.
- 23:51I want you to remember what he saved you from and what he saved
- 23:55you to. I want you to remember
- 23:56everything about that because what I'm about to ask you and
- 23:59tell you to do is going to be hard.
- 24:02And I'm sorry if someone has used guilt to manipulate you
- 24:06your whole life. That's not the heart of God and
- 24:09that's certainly not the heart of Jesus in his church here.
- 24:12Any time you feel like you're being guilted or manipulated,
- 24:15that's not from the Lord. I, I, I, it doesn't matter who
- 24:18it's coming from. That is not from the Lord.
- 24:21Somebody use a situation to try to control you or try to control
- 24:25your emotions or to threaten you.
- 24:27That's not from God. That is a big, big red flag.
- 24:31Run away. Run away or confront it and go,
- 24:35hey, I don't like being treated like that.
- 24:37I don't want to be treated and talk it out.
- 24:40When Paul appeals to us, he doesn't tell us just clean up
- 24:42our acts so God will accept us. But he says instead, I want you
- 24:45to think of God's mercies. I want you to worship him.
- 24:49I want you to remember. I want you to remember him and
- 24:53all that he's done. Never guilt, always grace.
- 24:56There's a great verse that we quote all the time, but I want
- 24:58to give you the address. It's in Lamentations chapter 3
- 25:03and verse 22. And you go Lamentations.
- 25:05Yeah. There's a book of the Bible,
- 25:07Lamentations. That's the beauty of reading
- 25:09through the Bible together. When you're reading on EU
- 25:11version app with us or going through the Bible, you'll get to
- 25:14Lamentations and this verse is beautiful.
- 25:17Listen, Lamentations 322 Through the Lord's mercies, we are not
- 25:23consumed because his compassions fail not.
- 25:28They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness, that
- 25:36is the basis by which God, through Paul, is pleading with
- 25:41us to this, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice,
- 25:48holy and acceptable to God, which is your reasonable
- 25:53service. It sounds a lot like the title
- 25:55of our study today. You can have it all, Lord.
- 25:59That place, that position, that posture is one of presenting
- 26:03yourself to Him. If you like to write in your
- 26:05Bibles, again, that word present is a technical word.
- 26:08It's going to take you back to the Old Testament, to the
- 26:11sacrificial system, to the Levites, bringing an animal to
- 26:16the altar and presenting that animal on the altar to be
- 26:21completely consumed. The animal has no choice in the
- 26:26matter. It was the one chosen, it was
- 26:29the one presented, it was the one offered, and it would be
- 26:33there on the altar until it was consumed.
- 26:37Here's the issue with us though. We have a choice.
- 26:42We have a choice. God leaves that to us.
- 26:45Believer, brother, sister, will you present yourself on the
- 26:50altar to be totally consumed in that issue with that situation,
- 26:55with your life? That's how it all started.
- 26:59Everyone of you, whether you recognize it or not, this is how
- 27:01your life as a born again believer started.
- 27:04You were on the altar to be completely consumed by the love
- 27:08and the grace and the mercy of God.
- 27:10You trusted Him with your eternal life, which translated
- 27:13into a trust of your daily life until you didn't and it became
- 27:19partial and it became this and it became, well, I'll give a
- 27:23little bit of here, but I'll hold back here.
- 27:26And God is just calling us back in this new year to present
- 27:29yourself, just like the Levites when they would bring the bring
- 27:32the offering, put it on the altar totally consumed as an
- 27:36offering to the Lord. Words like surrender,
- 27:41submission, yielding, obedient. That's God's heart for you and
- 27:47me. You have a choice.
- 27:49You can give it all to the Lord or not.
- 27:52You can present yourself to him daily or not.
- 27:56That word present is interesting.
- 27:58While it's a technical word in the Old Testament, truly here in
- 28:01the Greek pointing us backwards to the Levitical sacrificial
- 28:05system, it's also a word that I, it, it struck in my mind in
- 28:10earlier studies to, to I was reading an article yesterday and
- 28:13so I found it for you guys. I couldn't find it for the I
- 28:16couldn't, I didn't remember to find it for the other services,
- 28:19but I have it for you. So you get the full weight of
- 28:22this. Here's the title.
- 28:23You ready the title. 210 million people are now addicted to
- 28:28social media. So what that means is there are
- 28:32210 million that present themselves to social media every
- 28:36day, pretty much all day. I mean, you learn that with
- 28:40TikTok when they're going to shut down TikTok.
- 28:41People freaked out. I can't believe it.
- 28:44I can't live without TikTok. Hey, we've lived without TikTok.
- 28:48I think we made it just fine. We made it through.
- 28:52But this is pretty significant. Listen, it's just a, it's from
- 28:55the New York Post. An estimated 210 million people
- 28:59suffer. You know why they suffer?
- 29:01Because they present it. Don't you forget that.
- 29:04But there's the here's what the world says.
- 29:06This is how the world perspective on this.
- 29:08An estimated 210 million people suffer from social media
- 29:13addiction, which can result in mood swings.
- 29:17Check. Disrupted sleep?
- 29:20Check. Neglected responsibilities?
- 29:23Check, check, check, check. Desire for validation.
- 29:27I don't have enough checkpoint for that.
- 29:29And even a lack of hobbies. Listen.
- 29:31Those hooked on TikTok for instance, say they can't
- 29:35possibly live without it, while others may find themselves
- 29:39compulsively checking their social media platforms to check
- 29:42like and view counts, or spend a majority of their day staring at
- 29:47their screen. We do present ourselves every
- 29:51day to someone or to something. I think it's worth even as the
- 29:57world is able to examine things like maybe the issue in your
- 30:02life is where you choose to present yourself.
- 30:04Maybe that's it. I'm not advocating in any way.
- 30:07I use social media myself, and I have seen through the years an
- 30:11increase in my desire and some of these things.
- 30:14I've seen it in my own life. That's why there are seasons in
- 30:17my life, seasons throughout the year where I'll just completely
- 30:19go dark to remind myself that that's not as important as my
- 30:23walk with the Lord. It's not an issue.
- 30:26I'm not advocating here. Oh, you guys, you're a bunch of
- 30:29social media centres. I'm not, that's not my heart
- 30:32here. This is this is the thing.
- 30:34Listen, if the world can see 210 million people that can't live
- 30:38without social media, then maybe we as a church would just say,
- 30:41OK, Lord, I see that's power. I see it's social engineering.
- 30:45I see how it's drawn me and I see how it's changed me over the
- 30:48years. I see how because you know, for
- 30:49us back in the day, if I was teaching this Bible study 30
- 30:53years ago, I wouldn't use social media.
- 30:54You know why it didn't exist, But you know what I would say?
- 30:58I would say, OK, guys, be careful you don't get up in the
- 31:00morning and present yourself before anything.
- 31:03I mean, because some of you, before you even get out of bed,
- 31:05you're on your phone. That's just the way it is.
- 31:08Before you even go to the restroom or go look at yourself
- 31:11in the mirror, you're looking at other people's lives and other
- 31:14people's memes and other people's jokes.
- 31:16I mean, you could do that for hours at a time.
- 31:18If you want to know, just turn on on your phone screen time.
- 31:23You'll it'll tell you how many hours it'll be pretty.
- 31:25And it's like, Oh my goodness, that's a lot.
- 31:28You're thinking it's one minute at a time.
- 31:30But you had to understand, you know, you heard the word
- 31:32algorithm. You got to understand something.
- 31:34They create things to keep you on the app.
- 31:38You want to know why? The longer you stay, the more
- 31:41ads you will see, and the more ads that you see, the more money
- 31:45they make. It's very simple.
- 31:46It's not a very complicated system, except that when we
- 31:50present ourselves to something continually, it consumes us.
- 31:55Do you get it? Are you with us?
- 31:57You got to learn how to own social media rather than social
- 32:00media or anything else owning us because we can go on and on on
- 32:05things that we present ourselves to.
- 32:08And we think, oh, it's not going to be, it's not going to own me.
- 32:11Oh yes, it is. This is the picture here in
- 32:14Romans. It's really a statement of
- 32:18priorities, right? Matthew chapter 6, verse 33.
- 32:22Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness.
- 32:27Then these other things will be It's just a matter of
- 32:29priorities. It's not a matter I mean, some
- 32:32you may have this need really truly hearing my heart today.
- 32:36You may have this need to completely shut down for a
- 32:39while. That's a possibility.
- 32:41You have to lay it before the Lord like again, if I go back to
- 32:44my new believer days, I hear my pastor say that I'm like, boom,
- 32:47I'm out there. If that's going to be good for
- 32:48me, that's what I want. You Fast forward a few years,
- 32:51maybe I will, maybe I won't. I won't break any habits.
- 32:55I'll let everything else consume me other than the Lord and his
- 32:59word that that's where Paul is. That's where Paul is.
- 33:04He's not saying, you know, if I, you know, hey, don't present
- 33:06yourself to the newspaper. Remember the newspaper we used
- 33:11to go out, they would deliver it.
- 33:13It was paper newspaper. That's why they call that.
- 33:15If you don't, you guys are younger, you're like, what is
- 33:17that? Google it or TikTok it.
- 33:19You'll find whatever newspaper is.
- 33:21Don't worry. Like it's fine, you know, like
- 33:23it doesn't matter. It changes with culture, it
- 33:27changes with time. The word says here present and
- 33:33verse 2. Don't be conformed to this
- 33:36world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
- 33:41These are very important principles where by the mercies
- 33:44of God, for the New year, if you want to take it all, you have to
- 33:48come back to. But Lord, you can have it all,
- 33:51you can have it all, you. I belong to you.
- 33:54My life is yours. I am ready, willing and able to
- 33:59obey you. I will go anywhere, do anything.
- 34:02You get the first of fruits, you get it all.
- 34:05You get the first fruits, but you get it all, Lord, it all
- 34:08belongs to you. It comes from you.
- 34:09It comes back to you. And along the way, I'm in the
- 34:13world, right? So we have jobs, we shop here,
- 34:16we watch the media of the world, we watch the movies, the
- 34:19television. We are in the world, yes, but we
- 34:22won't be of this world. We're in it.
- 34:25We live in it. Jesus left us, remember?
- 34:27He says, I'm going to leave. I'm not going to take you out of
- 34:29the world and you go, what? Take us out?
- 34:32He says, no, I'm going to leave you there.
- 34:34I'm going to leave you in the world because you need the
- 34:37world. I need the world like like sore
- 34:42tooth or something. I need a like a cavity, like a
- 34:45no, no, no, no. You need the world because the
- 34:47world refines you, gives you opportunity to express your
- 34:51love, gives you and me an opportunity to really grow in
- 34:55grace and learn how to be patient.
- 34:58You know that the fruit of the Spirit comes out because of the
- 35:01world. You know the world is not
- 35:03intended to draw the flesh out of you.
- 35:05It's intended to draw the Spirit out of you.
- 35:08So you can learn how to love with the love of Christ in a
- 35:11world that's hostile toward God. But also the world needs you
- 35:15where the preserving influence. The church is where the voice
- 35:19the church is. The church is the voice that
- 35:21stands up for the unborn. The church is the one that
- 35:24stands up for righteousness, the holy righteousness, not just
- 35:27laws, not just government, but a righteousness that supersedes
- 35:31every government, every institution of man.
- 35:34God isn't intended in giving us direction for life.
- 35:38You're the salt and the light of the earth.
- 35:42So the world needs you, but you also need the world.
- 35:46And we come back. And Paul says, look, here's the
- 35:48key. Present yourself to God fully
- 35:53consumed, willing to surrender and submit to Him.
- 35:58There are a lot of barriers that prevent you from doing this, but
- 36:05I want to speak to just one more before we head out, and that is
- 36:08fear. Fear and worry holds a lot of
- 36:11people back from just going for it with the things of God.
- 36:16Like God will speak to you and there's a word of obedience
- 36:19here, something to do, and then you're just afraid of the
- 36:21outcome. You're afraid of the, as I
- 36:24mentioned earlier, this lack of quick obedience.
- 36:26Before you know it, you're completely lost the word that
- 36:30God gave you because you're fearful.
- 36:32Or maybe you think this happens a lot with missions and God puts
- 36:36a heart put something in your heart to just really reach out
- 36:39to someone to really be used of God and and you're like, but but
- 36:43if I give myself completely the God, he may send me to the
- 36:47middle of nowhere and just make my life miserable.
- 36:52And you can think of every bad thing that can happen when the
- 36:55Lord just says I all I ask you to do is ask your Co worker to
- 36:59come to church. That's it.
- 37:00That's all I ask you to do. Didn't talk to sending you
- 37:03anywhere or making your life miserable.
- 37:05I just put that on your heart to love your neighbour.
- 37:07That's it. That's all I have and this thing
- 37:10of worry and fear is real. Let me show you we're not going
- 37:13to develop it, but I do want to show you turn over to
- 37:15Philippians chapter 4 with me. We'll get there eventually as
- 37:18we're studying through these books together.
- 37:20But I do want to read it out loud.
- 37:22Let the Holy Spirit use it in our lives.
- 37:24Just a reminder of the power of God when it comes to fear and
- 37:29worry, that there's no reason to hold back from God.
- 37:33There's no worry to be fearful. Paul would say again to the
- 37:37church in Philippi verse 6 chapter 4, Be anxious for
- 37:42nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with
- 37:47Thanksgiving. Let your requests be made known
- 37:50to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all
- 37:54understanding will guard your hearts and your minds through
- 37:58Christ Jesus. Again writing in your Bible
- 38:01circle. The word anxious.
- 38:02It comes to us from 2 words. I want you to write them
- 38:04together, 2 words. The Greek word to divide so you
- 38:08can write divide there and the Greek word for mind.
- 38:12And really what this word means is to have a divided mind.
- 38:16He says don't have a divided mind toward things of God, but
- 38:20but to bring your issues to God, bring your concerns.
- 38:23I mean, that's part of presenting yourself to God.
- 38:25You have a regular prayer life, man.
- 38:27You're in his presence all the time.
- 38:29You're remembering and thinking about him and crying out to him.
- 38:32The word worry means to have a divided mind.
- 38:34It has the idea, this anxiousness of being pulled in
- 38:38two directions. And those of you that deal with
- 38:40worry, you know exactly what this means.
- 38:43You don't need me to define it for you.
- 38:45It's on. It brings instability.
- 38:48It takes away your equilibrium. I don't know the people that
- 38:52study these things, they say 95% of the things that we worry
- 38:55about never happen, but we lose our life along the way.
- 39:01We don't Live Today, worried about tomorrow, and then
- 39:04tomorrow comes and I was like, wow, it didn't happen, but I'll
- 39:07worry about the next week and I'll worry about the next week.
- 39:09Instead of living that abiding life, trusting in Christ,
- 39:12presenting ourselves to Him, and not living with a divided mind,
- 39:17but rather living with a full mind of one that trusts the
- 39:21Lord. The old English root word for
- 39:23worry means to strangle, and worry has a tendency to strangle
- 39:28the lifeout of us. I think it's something that
- 39:31James was talking about. If you can again write it down
- 39:34in James chapter one in verse 6 speaks of asking God in faith
- 39:40with no doubting. For he who doubts is like a wave
- 39:45of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.
- 39:48For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything
- 39:52from the Lord. He is a double minded man,
- 39:57unstable in all his ways. And I don't know any, if too
- 40:03many or if any of us ever would say I want to be unstable in
- 40:08life. I want as much stability as I
- 40:11can possibly get to navigate through a very unstable world, a
- 40:16very challenging world. You can trust God, Church.
- 40:21With all your heart, you cannot lean on your own understanding.
- 40:25You can you can learn to not lean on your own understanding.
- 40:29You can learn to acknowledge him in all your ways.
- 40:32He'll direct your paths. I find it interesting to coming
- 40:35back to Romans that he says to present your bodies.
- 40:39That's interesting. He doesn't say present your
- 40:41mind, which makes like if you're all messed up in your mind, hey,
- 40:44give it to the Lord or present your heart, your emotions.
- 40:47No, he says your body. Why?
- 40:50Well, the Bible declares your body is the temple of the Holy
- 40:54Spirit, like you are indwelt by God.
- 40:58Your body, my body, is the base of operations for God on the
- 41:03earth today. It is your hands that He uses,
- 41:06your feet, your eyes, your mouth.
- 41:11You have feet that walk and hands that reach out, mouths
- 41:15that speak. And I find if we can posture our
- 41:18body in the right direction, all the rest of us follows.
- 41:21Like today. Today you have postured your
- 41:24body to be in a position to receive the word of God.
- 41:26Everything else follows from there.
- 41:28Because I mean, you could be a lot of different places today
- 41:31your body, you could be doing a lot of different things because
- 41:34you have the choice. But in these moments, this
- 41:37habitual regular moment that we call church or fellowship or
- 41:42gathering together, your bodies are here, which we get your mind
- 41:46and your heart along the way. Even if you're not paying
- 41:48attention. It's all right, we'll get you.
- 41:52You're closer here than out there.
- 41:54I mean, it's going to be harder to reach you on the golf course
- 41:56than it is in this room right now.
- 41:58So it's all right, we'll get you.
- 41:59It's OK. You're in the atmosphere and
- 42:01it's not even me. I'm not even too concerned about
- 42:03me. You're in the place, this
- 42:05building, which is also a temple of the Holy Spirit, the House of
- 42:09God. You've put your body in a place
- 42:12where God is very active in the room.
- 42:14He is speaking and ministering and convicting and comforting.
- 42:19You're in the right place. And if you weren't able to be
- 42:22here physically, just even in front of a screen or in a
- 42:26radius, a radio somewhere, you have presented that radio.
- 42:29You presented that, that screen, that YouTube, that whatever.
- 42:32Online, however, you're watching us to be in a place where God
- 42:36can speak to you so that your hands can be used.
- 42:40Your mouth. I think of all throughout the
- 42:41Bible, you pay attention to this.
- 42:43You'll see it all through the Bible, how God uses the body.
- 42:46I think of the mouth of Moses. How did God use the mouth of
- 42:48Moses not only to speak truth to Pharaoh, deliver the nation of
- 42:52Israel, but also to give us the law.
- 42:54I think of the hands of little David, just a Ruddy little kid
- 42:59comes to deliver food to his brothers.
- 43:01Here's the giant mocking God and he's like, you know what?
- 43:03None of this nonsense. And he uses his hand, a sling
- 43:07and a stone and wipes out the enemy of God on behalf of the
- 43:12nation of Israel. How about the feet of Paul?
- 43:15He took the gospel to the known world at the time, his lowly
- 43:20feet. There's examples of God using
- 43:24our bodies all throughout the Scriptures.
- 43:26Even if today you go well, but that.
- 43:27I'm not much, pastor. I'm not much.
- 43:29I'm not much. Yeah, but you, you miss a great
- 43:31point. None of us are much.
- 43:34It's all God and not us. The Bible says that God, he's
- 43:38attracted to weakness. He loves human weakness in the
- 43:41sense that he can show himself strong on behalf of us.
- 43:45I I think of First Corinthians chapter one, verse 27, where it
- 43:48says God has chosen the foolish things of the world.
- 43:52You know who he's speaking about, right?
- 43:55Us. He goes on to say not only
- 43:59foolish but weak. Not only weak but base.
- 44:04Not only base, but the things that are not.
- 44:08That was a story before you were ever a believer.
- 44:11God had his eyes on you. You didn't know it, but He full
- 44:15well knew what He was going to do with your life.
- 44:18He knew what He was going to do, how He's going to do it.
- 44:21And that is what we're walking into.
- 44:23We don't quite know, but God's ready to show you.
- 44:26He's ready to show you if you master this piece of your
- 44:29spiritual walk and present yourself to God willingly,
- 44:34completely, you learn surrender, you learn submission, you learn
- 44:41yielding. You and I, we learn obedience.
- 44:46Notice let's end with their turn over to Deuteronomy chapter 6
- 44:52very familiar passage again, these familiar passages, they
- 44:55get lost because they're so repetitive.
- 44:57Don't let just pay attention to things that that like seem to
- 45:01come up more and more and often because they're powerful.
- 45:04And this is the traditional Shema, the great Shema, the
- 45:07prayer that even Jesus quoted. Notice with me in Deuteronomy 6
- 45:13and verse 4. Hear O Israel, the Lord our God,
- 45:17the Lord is 1 You shall love the Lord your God with all your
- 45:22heart, with all your soul and with all your might, which
- 45:27anytime you hear the word all, I just want you in the back of
- 45:30your mind or you can draw. You can just ask the Lord, Lord,
- 45:33what am I holding back from you? Show me am I holding anything
- 45:37back? Like if he tells me to do
- 45:39something all and I know I'm human so I'm incapable of doing
- 45:43all all the time, then I need to turn my prayers into the Lord.
- 45:47Would you show me when I'm holding back because I want what
- 45:50you have for me. I want to take it all.
- 45:53I want to be to be in a place where I enjoy all that you have
- 45:56for me. But where am I lacking?
- 45:58Notice these words, all your heart, soul and might.
- 46:03Verse 6. These words which I command you
- 46:05today shall be in your heart. Teach them diligent to your
- 46:08kids. Talk about them.
- 46:09When you sit in your house, walk by the way, when you lie down,
- 46:12when you rise up. It's almost like he's saying
- 46:15present yourself to them morning, noon and night.
- 46:18Present yourself to them before you hit the phone, before you
- 46:21hit the news before present yourself to God in the morning,
- 46:25in the evening, in the afternoon.
- 46:28Bind them. He says verse 8 as a sign on
- 46:31your hand. Be your frontlets between your
- 46:33eyes. You shall write them on the
- 46:35doorposts of your house and of your gates and it shall be
- 46:38listen. It shall be when the Lord your
- 46:41God brings you into the land of which I he swore to your
- 46:45father's to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
- 46:48This is the land, Joshua, how we started this whole series.
- 46:51This is the land that Joshua takes them into.
- 46:54They're living the promises of God.
- 46:56When you get there, that's the promise.
- 46:58Well, they're getting there. Notice he warns them I'm going
- 47:01to give you large and beautiful cities that you didn't build.
- 47:04I'm going to give you houses. Verse 11 of good things which
- 47:07you didn't fill hewn doubt wells which you didn't dig, vineyards
- 47:12and olive trees which you didn't plant.
- 47:14When you have eaten and are full, then beware, lest you
- 47:19forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of
- 47:23the House of bondage. You shall fear the Lord your God
- 47:26and serve him, takes oaths in his name and have no other gods
- 47:31from the people around you. That's what happens.
- 47:36We forget. We forget all that God has given
- 47:40us that we didn't do. We think we did.
- 47:44Oh, it's my hard work, and it's all my Yeah, You know, if you
- 47:46kind of go back, those are all secondary causes.
- 47:49The primary cause is the grace of God and his mercy.
- 47:54And you and I, we get to enjoy it.
- 47:55We get to go along with what God's doing.
- 47:57But it's all our, our, our work is all responding to the
- 48:01initiation and the work that God has started in our lives.
- 48:05It is not all our hard work and it's not all our studying and
- 48:09every it's not, it's not all our investments and all the money
- 48:12we've made. It's God.
- 48:14And until you give God the glory, you're going to have a
- 48:17very frustrating life as an unbeliever or as a believer.
- 48:23God is the initiator in your life and he's inviting us.
- 48:26Hey, you want to take it all? Yes, Lord, yes, I want to take
- 48:29it all. Well, then you need to take one
- 48:31step back and have that place. No, Lord, you can have it all it
- 48:36all. It's all to you and from you and
- 48:38for you. You can have it all, Lord, every
- 48:42single part. So Lord, we we we do ask for you
- 48:45to make this alive in US. Teach us God, that's you know,
- 48:53such a stirring time where we're we're wanting to enter in brand
- 48:57new. We want to, you know, submit to
- 49:00you, our prodigal kids. We want to submit to you our
- 49:02marriage. We want to submit to you our
- 49:04thinking. We want we, we have all these
- 49:06issues that we can't fix and situations that we don't like.
- 49:11We have fears and anxieties. We have our own philosophies, we
- 49:15have our own thoughts and we just we submit to you today,
- 49:18God, that we would present ourselves to you freshly and new
- 49:25that we would be like that animal, that offering that
- 49:29little lamb that was offered on the altar completely consumed.
- 49:34We have, you know, we have just so little time left.
- 49:40The the tyranny of the urgent steals our life and worry and
- 49:45fear and pride and and we we, I mean, I, I come to you, Lord, as
- 49:51in a fresh year. I want to learn how to trust you
- 49:53more. I want to have that peace in my
- 49:57life and my heart that passes all understanding.
- 50:01I want to cast my cares upon you, Lord.
- 50:04And in our church, God stir us. There's still more land to be
- 50:08taken. There's still more.
- 50:11There's still more in the marriage.
- 50:13There's still more with the kids.
- 50:15There's still more in high school.
- 50:16There's still more in college there.
- 50:18There's still more land to take to honor you with our lives.
- 50:22And so we yield ourselves to you, Lord, a fresh and anew, in
- 50:25Jesus name, Amen. We pray that you've been
