Transcript
- 0:10Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon.
- 0:13On Friday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:16Shank Condon and Ken Miller for the next two hours talk sports
- 0:19with you. Thanks for starting your
- 0:20afternoon with us. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:23program. Just two guests on the program
- 0:25today. We will give four of you an
- 0:27opportunity to win some grub from the chicken coop and Trent
- 0:30will make some picks up. First, we'll head to Kansas
- 0:33City. Eugene Repay is there.
- 0:35He'll be covering Iowa State in Arizona tonight for the Des
- 0:38Moines Register as he always does. desmoinesregister.com for
- 0:41Eugene. He'll join us at 12:30.
- 0:43Maybe recap the first two blowouts and take a look at the
- 0:47Arizona game tonight as Iowa State seeks a little revenge on
- 0:52the Wildcats as they put it to him in Tucson a couple of weeks
- 0:55ago. But Eugene repay up 1st at
- 0:5812:30. Then Tom Cacert, I'm not sure if
- 1:00he's back from Chicago. I'm not sure why if he would
- 1:03stay or not, but he will talk to us.
- 1:05I know that much. Kicking off our number 2 Tom
- 1:07Cacert on the Ohio State loss yesterday.
- 1:10What Iowa waits waits ahead for them, obviously Selection
- 1:14Sunday. Next up, Hawkeye Topics with Tom
- 1:17Cacert to kick off our number 2 at 1:30 or thereabouts will give
- 1:21four of you an opportunity to win some grub from the chicken
- 1:24coop, three locations in Central Iowa, Ankeny, Urbandale and West
- 1:28Des Moines. Trent will make some picks about
- 1:301:50 and then he'll dad head down to Casey Center for the
- 1:34boys state championship. Cedar Falls and Johnston will do
- 1:38battled here today is that's the match up.
- 1:41Both prevailed yesterday. 3:00 on the bull on the FM dial on
- 1:45the bull 96.9. How are you, Trent Condon?
- 1:49Tired. It's.
- 1:50Been a long couple of weeks. It's been a long month yes and
- 1:53it's it's catching up with me. Voices starting to falter and up
- 1:58too late recording podcast and re watching games and it just
- 2:02I'm worn down. So one more to go.
- 2:05Looking forward to it. Johnston the Cinderella story
- 2:07they beat #3 walkie. Northwest yesterday beat #1
- 2:11walkie and today they'll get their shot against #1 Cedar
- 2:15Falls, the undefeated Tigers against the Johnston Dragons.
- 2:183:00 for the tip off of that one.
- 2:20So what are the Dragons doing that they didn't do during the
- 2:22regular season? If it or did somebody return to
- 2:25the lineup? Was there an injury?
- 2:26Yeah, Tino Day is back and he is the lone senior starter in this
- 2:29squad. It's 4 juniors in him getting
- 2:31him back out change and I think it was 6 of their eight losses
- 2:34came when he was out or coming back from injury.
- 2:37So since he's been playing, he was our player of the game
- 2:39yesterday presented by Graphite Construction Group.
- 2:41He was outstanding, but he wasn't alone.
- 2:44You know they're going to defend.
- 2:45I mean we talk about this every time.
- 2:46It's Courtney Henderson coach team.
- 2:47They're going to defend and in both games against both walkies,
- 2:51they out toughed them. Now they also shot credibly well
- 2:53in both of those games and certainly yesterday they had 7
- 2:56to 10 three pointers and when Johnson's doing that, they got a
- 2:59shot. Yeah, absolutely any team does
- 3:01that. They're going to and have an
- 3:02opportunity. This Cedar Falls team, though,
- 3:05is a different animal. And I mentioned to you the other
- 3:07day, Will Gerdes, he's going to you and I.
- 3:10He's 6-9, maybe 6-8. Listen to 6/9.
- 3:13He is your prototypical you and I center that we've seen for
- 3:16what, the last quarter century. I mean, going back to the
- 3:18beginning of the McDermott era, starting with David Gruber and
- 3:21going all the way through. And this is the guy, yes, he's a
- 3:23little bit undersized. He's not a traditional center,
- 3:25but he's good, He's skilled, he's going to make the right
- 3:28plays. I don't think know if he's going
- 3:29to be an impact guy, but by the time he's a Sophomen Moore
- 3:32junior senior, Oh yeah, there's that guy.
- 3:34He's going to be really good there.
- 3:36They got some guards that can do some different things.
- 3:38They're senior laden. Kimbrough's been playing since
- 3:40he was an underclassman for them.
- 3:42He's their best 3 point shooter. The only sophomore that plays
- 3:45for them in the starting lineup. They have 4 seniors and a
- 3:47sophomore is a Gary kid that just you really can't rattle
- 3:51him. But he's going to see a
- 3:52different level of defense in this one today, so should be a
- 3:54fun one. Johnston trying to pull the
- 3:56Shocker and double dip the big school championship.
- 4:00They win a lot of championships over there.
- 4:01Yes, they do. So tell me about Evan Jacobson's
- 4:03technical Was it deserved? I don't know what.
- 4:06Because he got he how did what did he get an elbow to the face
- 4:10or he got a bleeding, bloody nose?
- 4:12He did, yeah. He he got chopped there pretty
- 4:14good and. And he got back in the game and
- 4:17then it came right, the technical.
- 4:19I think magic word, yeah, I think that's what it was.
- 4:23That's what it had to be. It was quick, no doubt.
- 4:27Now he was incredulous that anything happened.
- 4:29I've watched Evan now for four years.
- 4:31Evan talks a lot. Does he on?
- 4:33The floor, in fact, they were, he was inbounding the ball after
- 4:37he got hit in the nose. And I heard him talk to the
- 4:39official and he still though, you know, all the blood's
- 4:42supposed to be off and you can still see the blood stains on
- 4:44there. And the official was talking to
- 4:45him and Evan wasn't exactly happy.
- 4:50He said, yeah, there's a foul in no uncertain terms.
- 4:54So I'm not surprised that he got a technical because I've seen
- 4:58him run hot before. But again, I don't know what was
- 5:01said, had the cans on, couldn't hear what was said, anything
- 5:04like that. I would anticipate, though.
- 5:05It was one of those words you can't say on the floor.
- 5:08So his coach, Kanasky, what's his first name?
- 5:10Kevin. Kevin.
- 5:11So he has to be Kurt Kanasky's kid.
- 5:14Yes, yes, right. And how long has he been there?
- 5:18A while, maybe four years. I think after the split, I think
- 5:22he got the job. He's done a really good job.
- 5:24He is as animated as you're going to see on the sidelines.
- 5:27Yeah, you, you pointed that out in the game.
- 5:28Yesterday as a broadcast, he is works the officials incredibly
- 5:33well. And yet yesterday I thought he
- 5:36was more reserved. Was he than normal?
- 5:38Yeah, but I was surprised by that.
- 5:40But it was not the same Kanasky that we normally see on the
- 5:43sidelines 'cause he's a guy that hops up and down and he's
- 5:45pleading and he's got a lot of Tom Izzo in him.
- 5:48Think of that kind of coach. That's Kanaski working those
- 5:51officials. Does it work?
- 5:52It works for Izzo. Does it work for Kanaski?
- 5:54Not at the same level, right? Yeah.
- 5:56Because I also don't see Kanaski hugging up with the guys like
- 5:59Izzo likes to do too, you know, and, and kissing their ass.
- 6:02I mean, that's what Izzo does. And it drives me crazy.
- 6:04I hate it. I absolutely.
- 6:05Who does they get today? They've got a tough game today,
- 6:07tougher than the UCLA. Yes, UCLA playing well, playing
- 6:11well. I have a great day for the Big
- 6:1210 today. It's underway, by the way,
- 6:14Michigan, Ohio State's. Give Michigan all they want.
- 6:16This Thornton's player, I mean, we saw that yesterday.
- 6:20He is an absolute player. So we'll keep an eye on that
- 6:22one. A Big 12 back tonight, Arizona
- 6:25and Iowa State. Were you surprised at the point
- 6:27spread? I thought it would be a little
- 6:28bit higher, 4 1/2 is it stayed at 4 1/2.
- 6:31Let me look real. Quick, I think there was 3 and a
- 6:33halfs this morning in the market when I really.
- 6:35Yeah. So there there was some steam
- 6:37that came in on Iowa State, the homecourt of Vantage.
- 6:39They're a different team in Kansas City almost every single
- 6:42year this team plays. Down to 3 1/2 at Where Are We?
- 6:47DraftKings has 3 1/2 opened at three. 3 1/2 at FanDuel Circus
- 6:51still has four. We'll see where that goes.
- 6:54We know where the floor went after yesterday and that went, I
- 6:57don't know where it's going to go, but it's not going to be
- 6:59visible tonight as they're going back to the floor that maybe
- 7:04that should have been there the entire time.
- 7:06So I'm I go back to last week and it was more than just media
- 7:09that was complaining about it. You did see some quotes from
- 7:12some of the teams, some of the women that played on the floor.
- 7:16But it took till yesterday, though, Christian Anderson
- 7:19seemingly went down until enough's enough.
- 7:22And and your mark has decided, despite the Flack that he was
- 7:26maybe that maybe not the Flack, the the embarrassment that would
- 7:29come along with admitting, you know, maybe we shouldn't have
- 7:31done this. On one hand, do you do you debut
- 7:36a floor like this in your biggest event for the
- 7:39conference? On the other hand, you got to
- 7:41give him a little bit of credit for doing a little bit of a mea
- 7:43culpa in midstream here. So I think you know what, at the
- 7:47end of the day, I think it's the right decision.
- 7:49I think that obviously we saw the players slipping.
- 7:52Yes, there was women slipping and apparently their voice were
- 7:55not heard. But when Christian Anderson went
- 7:58down yesterday for 0 apparent reason other than, you know, we
- 8:03slipped on the floor, that's that's what maybe led to what
- 8:08we're going to see going for so a couple of really good games
- 8:10tonight. I thought Kansas was incredibly
- 8:12lucky to advance over TCU. TCU take care of the ball late.
- 8:16They're probably playing in this game and Kansas and Houston we
- 8:20wouldn't get. And I think this is going to be
- 8:22a really good game. I think Arizona and Iowa State's
- 8:24got a chance to be an outstanding basketball game.
- 8:27So we shall see. On top of all that this
- 8:29afternoon, Wisconsin, Illinois. Do you have an opinion on that
- 8:33game? It's a big number.
- 8:35Trends. It almost feels like a trap.
- 8:37I grabbed Wisconsin and I regretted it kind of instantly.
- 8:40Yeah, we see this so bad. Because they're trying to get
- 8:43you to bet, yeah. Wisconsin.
- 8:44So many times they were. Their highest is as high as
- 8:48anybody in college. It's 8 1/2 now, you know.
- 8:50They went and beat Michigan on the road they went.
- 8:54As good to win as you're going to have in college basketball.
- 8:56Coupled with wins at Purdue, at Illinois, at not at Cole Center
- 9:00at give me 3 better Rd. victories.
- 9:03Not anybody in college basketball.
- 9:06I don't think you're going to find it I.
- 9:07Don't think so. Either I don't believe you will
- 9:09find 3 better Rd. victories yet. He also looked deeper in that
- 9:12resume. A lot of head scratching losses
- 9:14in there too. They're Apex.
- 9:16Yeah, absolutely. They've already done it.
- 9:18They can beat Illinois, but when the three-point shots aren't
- 9:20working, that's the problem for Wisconsin.
- 9:22And it's so weird because we starting with Dick Bennett when
- 9:25he finally got that program turned back around in the early
- 9:28to mid 90s. And all right, it's a boring
- 9:30style, but they're winning basketball games.
- 9:31And then it morphs into Beau Ryan and it's the same type of
- 9:34thing and the swing offense and they're going to run clock and
- 9:36they're going to guard you. They don't play that way
- 9:38anymore. And this looks like a free
- 9:39McCaffrey team. They are not very good
- 9:41defensively. They shoot it from the outside,
- 9:43but if they're not making three-point shots, they don't
- 9:45have a counter punch to that. If shots aren't falling,
- 9:49Wisconsin turns into a very average basketball team.
- 9:51So I know that once you got to finish with your duties at the
- 9:54Casey Center and your dad duties, which you know, trump
- 9:57everything, you sat down and watched some replays.
- 10:00How much of the Iowa State game did you feel you had to watch,
- 10:03actually? And it was a lot of the Fast
- 10:05forward, but. Trent, it was.
- 10:06It was a back-to-back, but with the exception of the first, I
- 10:09don't know, 7 minutes. Maybe it's like, alright, we're
- 10:12gonna get a tussle here, right? And then just went away.
- 10:15And. They opened.
- 10:16Iowa State Flexed. Lipsy was unbelievable again
- 10:20yesterday. He was terrific.
- 10:21Jefferson was terrific. Manjilovic gave them nothing.
- 10:24Nothing. And still.
- 10:26And to win a game. By 22, without Manjilovic giving
- 10:28you anything, essentially give him five points.
- 10:32Torre's still an offensive issue.
- 10:33He is. That's just going to be the new
- 10:35reality going forward and teams are going to guard him.
- 10:37As I love it, but I love his toughness on defense and I like
- 10:40the fact that you know what, you can substitute defense for
- 10:43offense because Bateman's going to make some shots, He's going
- 10:45to take some shots. He's not scared to shoot the
- 10:47basketball, which you'd like to seize, particularly from a
- 10:51freshman. I thought Plato was terrific in
- 10:53the game yesterday as well. But look, I think I am.
- 10:56I think probably, and Mccausan said as much.
- 10:59I mean, Lipsy was the start of the game for Iowa State and
- 11:01that's saying a lot because Jefferson's been out of his mind
- 11:04as of late. Let's get Jeff in here real
- 11:07quick. We're going to head back to
- 11:08Kansas City, get Eugene repay as they're covering the tournament
- 11:11for the Des Moines Register along with Travis Hines.
- 11:14Eugene at 12:30. Jeff, right now.
- 11:15How are you, Jeff? Doing well, you know, a couple
- 11:19quick things He touched on Manchilovich and you know, I've
- 11:22heard TJ say this and I've kind of been saying this to to some
- 11:27other people. You know, it's very hard for
- 11:31Manchilovich to get his own in 1/2 court setting.
- 11:34And that scares me going into next week where they do a really
- 11:39good job of finding him. If they can is off second chance
- 11:44rebounds off of getting in the transition early, him leaking
- 11:48out, that's where they're going to find him.
- 11:51It's hard for him to get his own shot.
- 11:53But as a really good scout on him, and this is just me, you
- 11:58know, off the cuff, I just want to send.
- 12:01If I'm defending Milan, I'm just not crashing the boards.
- 12:04I'm just going to stick him. I'm going to find him in
- 12:06transition. I'm not going to let him leak
- 12:08and I'm just going to shadow him from rim to rim.
- 12:12Yes, it's nice to see Lipsy shoot particularly well from
- 12:17three. Can you do that next week?
- 12:19Fingers crossed. Fingers crossed.
- 12:23Can you rely on that? I don't know, you know, I've
- 12:25heard riders talk about getting 30 points from the bench.
- 12:28That's, that's, that's ridiculous.
- 12:30I, I could go back and I, I'd love to know how many times
- 12:34those three guys have got combined 30 points.
- 12:36I wish I knew, but I don't. But they got 21 yesterday.
- 12:39If they can get 20 between those 3 I feel.
- 12:42Really, really good. Heisey, Heisey, Bateman and
- 12:44Plater right you're talking about.
- 12:46Correct. Those three, I think Heisey got
- 12:482, Plater got 11 and so there, there it is.
- 12:52Now it's plater going to get 11 most games, probably not, you
- 12:56know, but they're again going back to what I said, can they
- 12:59get 20? So if they get 75 a game and get
- 13:0220 from the bench, I really, really like their chances.
- 13:05Final thing and we've talked about this per month here we are
- 13:10semi final Arizona. This is their third game.
- 13:14Does it matter? I don't think so and I'm an Iowa
- 13:19State fan. What, what do we have to prove?
- 13:21What's the difference between A2 and A3 seat?
- 13:25Now, I've heard a writer say this and I was down there, I
- 13:28told you guys, I think I was down there two years ago for the
- 13:31Houston game. And if you remember, it was them
- 13:34and North Carolina battling for that last one seat.
- 13:36They gave us North Carolina. So if there's nothing on the
- 13:40line here, if they're locked into a two or three seat, what
- 13:44are we doing here besides muddy for the networks?
- 13:48I got all that. But if they're locked in and
- 13:50then they're going to play another game game the next
- 13:52night, I, I just, I don't understand the yes, they want to
- 13:58win, they want to bring it down. The Hilton foul.
- 14:00Well, Lipsey goes back to when he was a freshman and he brought
- 14:02that up. I mean, how much fun he had and
- 14:04how, how big it felt to win that tournament when he was, you
- 14:07know, an underclassman. I I get you.
- 14:09I'm with you. They're going to be a two or
- 14:11three seed. I agree.
- 14:12Ken, And it's funny that you said that how fun it is down
- 14:15there his freshman year. OK, how about how fun would it
- 14:18be to get an Elite 8 for the first time in 20?
- 14:20Three to the choir. Preaching the choir.
- 14:23How about going to a final four since 1944.
- 14:26Now you turn into you're not just a yeah, you were a great
- 14:30four year starter. Now you're going to legendary
- 14:33that if we get to an Elite 8, you guys have a good weekend.
- 14:36You too Jeff, enjoy the games, appreciate fair points.
- 14:39And I continue to hear that from Cyclone fans.
- 14:41It's fun and it's great when you're there and it's incredible
- 14:44atmosphere and you're surrounded by your own.
- 14:45That's not the target, right? You don't start bouncing the
- 14:48balls and doing all that, but wind work, getting in shape in
- 14:52July to win the Big 12 tournament.
- 14:53No, because how do we remember some of these championship
- 14:56teams, Big 12 tournament champion teams, remember what
- 15:00happened. It's the competitiveness in the
- 15:01guys, it's the competitive spirited Lipsy that now they're
- 15:04there. We're this far.
- 15:06And you played poorly against Arizona.
- 15:08The. Last they did they they they
- 15:09were embarrassed. They were embarrassed the game
- 15:12was in Tucson, so the game's going to be at Hilton South and
- 15:16I don't think there's going to be a lot of Wildcat fans there.
- 15:19No, absolutely not. I mean, watching a little bit of
- 15:21their game against UCF yesterday definitely was not a big
- 15:24contingent of Wildcat fans that were there.
- 15:27And nor will there be tonight or if they get the get through
- 15:30tomorrow. I'm guessing probably Houston.
- 15:31The same way it's going to be Kansas fans, it's going to be
- 15:34Iowa State fans, which is going to lead, you have to assume, to
- 15:38a massive ticket tonight for this session.
- 15:41My God. Yes, no doubt.
- 15:43Kansas and I with state fans trying to get into the building
- 15:45and outbidding each other for Duckets.
- 15:49Let's take a peek here. Let's see what the tickets are
- 15:52for this evening. You got any kind?
- 15:55Of you know, I wouldn't, I wouldn't know.
- 15:57I, I, I I have absolutely zero idea.
- 16:00All right, so I'm looking on game time, the game time app
- 16:03that's. Is that a pretty good one?
- 16:05Yes. Is it?
- 16:06Is it less fees than StubHub? Well, it includes the fees and
- 16:09the price, OK, which I love. So they don't tack them all.
- 16:12Right. So it's not you don't think
- 16:13you're. Paying 100 and all of a sudden
- 16:14it's 120. A120180 it's a really cool.
- 16:18Yeah. I mean, are you kidding me?
- 16:19The fees are asinine. It's ridiculous.
- 16:22Great deal. Didn't isn't.
- 16:23There a lawsuit going through. There is, yeah.
- 16:26The Ticketmaster I. Think.
- 16:27Is that what it is? I believe so because they're but
- 16:29the public realized they're getting gouged, yes.
- 16:32Good every single time. Get in price.
- 16:34You can get into the building now you're sitting in the upper
- 16:36reaches. Upper baseline 141 bucks.
- 16:39That's not brutal. You're in the building.
- 16:41Give me, give me lower bowl. Lower bowl best deal that is out
- 16:44there. And I don't want to be hot
- 16:46behind the basket. OK, you're good.
- 16:47You're in a corner. OK, that's fine.
- 16:49Lower level section one O 9 OK 256 with fees you.
- 16:54Know it's not as bad as I thought.
- 16:56I I'm kind of the same way. I'm kind of, I mean.
- 16:59It's not cheap by any means. Nothing is anymore.
- 17:02There's nothing. And certainly and as it pertains
- 17:04to tickets, so I've told you, my sister lives in Cleveland, her
- 17:07husband went to Ohio State, he's a Buckeye grad and they want to
- 17:11go watch the wrestling, NCAA wrestling's next week, same
- 17:14thing. You can't find tickets even for
- 17:16one of the early sessions for less than a couple 100 bucks
- 17:18with fees and everything in there for NCAA wrestling, just
- 17:22tickets for everything. And we got incredibly lucky.
- 17:25My daughter and wife went to the Taylor Swift tour when the
- 17:28Aaron's tour was happening. We just got lucky there.
- 17:30We had a friend that got a ticket off her and that's the
- 17:33only way that she was able to pull that off.
- 17:34But. What could you do?
- 17:36You remember what you could have.
- 17:37By the way, Ohio State is beating Michigan.
- 17:40Yeah, here come the Buckeyes. I think the get in price and
- 17:43this was it when it was in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil, not
- 17:46at the field house at the football stadium.
- 17:49They're putting, they're going in the big building.
- 17:50And I think they get in price. They could find tickets that
- 17:53were like behind the stage a little bit so you couldn't see
- 17:56everything. Obstructed view.
- 17:57And it was 2200 bucks a piece. God yeah.
- 18:01In a building that big obstructed.
- 18:04She did this all over the world. Oh, yes, yeah, that's.
- 18:08But look around tickets, look at events, look at how different
- 18:12things are. People pay, they're willing to
- 18:14pay. They're going to do it.
- 18:15Those biggest events, it has gone absolutely ridiculous.
- 18:18I mean, Can you imagine 25 years ago thinking about the prices?
- 18:22What were Super Bowl prices? 1st Super Bowl I went to was
- 18:25Super Bowl 31 Packers. It was Favre's only Super Bowl
- 18:28in New Orleans. The face value I want to say was
- 18:31$300. Cindy and I paid 1200 apiece.
- 18:36Fast forward Super Bowl 43, I don't know what the face value
- 18:41was, but we paid $1800 a piece and that was Kurt Warner in
- 18:46Arizona against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 18:49Now, the last Super Bowl, Super Bowl 50, we were gifted tickets,
- 18:54so I don't know how much they paid for them.
- 18:56That was at Levi Stadium, the Carolina Panthers and the Denver
- 19:00Broncos. I can't remember the last time I
- 19:02bought a ticket to a sporting event.
- 19:04God, I can't remember the last time I went through.
- 19:06Well, that's also a part of it, right?
- 19:08Right. So this past Super Bowl average
- 19:11and it crashed. This year, this was not.
- 19:13This was not one of those years where the you just had to pay
- 19:16through the nose to get in. You could.
- 19:18Well, you still did, because she didn't.
- 19:20Exceed 6 grand. There were tickets about four
- 19:23grand that was get in price between 4000 and $6000 though
- 19:28average price 7500 to 8000 to watch a three hour or in the
- 19:33Super Bowls case a three and a half hour.
- 19:35Football game. Unbelievable.
- 19:37I can't wrap my mind around. It No, it's just the feeling to
- 19:40get there. Yeah.
- 19:41I mean, I'll never forget the feeling.
- 19:43I had to. I had this feeling twice in my
- 19:44life. One of them people said, good
- 19:46God, really? When I saw the twin Spires for
- 19:48the first time after driving all night from Des Moines to get to
- 19:51Louisville before the sun came up.
- 19:52And I did. And then when I got to the Super
- 19:55Bowl, yeah, just walking into the Super Dome, just knowing
- 19:58that I'm at the freaking Super Bowl, it just was different.
- 20:02I just felt different. Just like, Oh my God.
- 20:05Wow. And I'm here.
- 20:06What was the location that first Super Bowl you went to?
- 20:08New Orleans. Oh, the perfect one, right?
- 20:10Great. Everybody that's been says it's
- 20:12incredible. Should be there every year the
- 20:14season. The San Francisco, you're not in
- 20:16San Francisco, you're an hour away in a car.
- 20:18At best at. Best the one in Tampa Bay.
- 20:21I mean where? Do you hang out Ybor City?
- 20:24Sure you could, but or what's the the channel?
- 20:28Yeah, Yep. Clear Channel.
- 20:29No, it's something. I think it's where Brady threw
- 20:34the trophy in the water. OK.
- 20:36I think it's we did, we did 2 Hawkeye games, we covered their
- 20:40bowl games there and we did our show from I think it's called
- 20:44the channel. Anyways, there's two cities it
- 20:48should be in, in my opinion. Yeah, Las Vegas, absolutely,
- 20:51because you're going to be on the Strip, you're going to be
- 20:53downtown. I mean, you being the fans and
- 20:55everybody wants to party together.
- 20:56Or Bourbon Street. Two spots. 2 spots not going to.
- 20:59Happen Bourbon Street. You could not watch shoulder to
- 21:02shoulder people on the Saturday before.
- 21:04The game was just bananas. And the same things happened in
- 21:07this week when we talk about conference tournaments.
- 21:09Chicago's great city, Indianapolis is better for the
- 21:12Big 10 basketball. Tournament Kansas City?
- 21:14Yes, you're outside the door for Grind Out Loud, the Power and
- 21:17Light District. You got everything.
- 21:18Yes, Chicago. You want to be hanging out
- 21:21around the United Center? Hell.
- 21:22No, not unless I'm licensed to Kerry.
- 21:26Right, it is I. Don't think I could be, come to
- 21:28think of it. Oh yeah, I don't think I could
- 21:30be. Not that I want to be.
- 21:31I just you're. Not going to be strapping a
- 21:33piece. No, I'm not.
- 21:34At 67 years old, this is the time.
- 21:36Now is the time. Got to protect myself in Ankeny.
- 21:40Real quick, I do want to get your opinion on this because
- 21:44it's a team in the division that your team resides in and has
- 21:48been speculated for. Oh, I don't know, seemingly the
- 21:52last couple of weeks it seemed like Kyler Murray and the
- 21:55Minnesota Vikings were going to end up being a match made in
- 21:58heaven. Well, until Arizona actually
- 22:03made him available, you could couldn't do anything.
- 22:07So Arizona decided on Wednesday to cut them.
- 22:10We saw what happened on Thursday.
- 22:12Kyler Murray to the Vikings. What does that do?
- 22:15I love it. As of Chiefs as a Bears fan.
- 22:19Not as a Bears fan, as a football, as a football fan.
- 22:21Is somebody looking this objectively?
- 22:24So you're not doing it thinking, huh, the Bears are going to take
- 22:26two year? No, I don't and and maybe I'm
- 22:29out and I was looking at some numbers last night again on.
- 22:31Kyler, John, we'll get you in just a second, so hang in there.
- 22:34There there are numbers that you can paint and say, all right, he
- 22:36can get it back and there's some that you can point to and say
- 22:38this is going to be a disaster. I just believe in KOC and with a
- 22:42full offseason, A tutelage with an opportunity for Kyler Murray
- 22:46understanding on a one year deal, this might be your last
- 22:49shot to have the back half of your career be a financially
- 22:53viable 1. Yeah, you know, the, the, the
- 22:56push back, not push back. The concern that I've heard is
- 23:00that KOC has worked with two quarterbacks that are going to
- 23:03be under that have been under center, right.
- 23:05He's 2 turned 2 Q BS around because they're going to be
- 23:08under center. Talam Murray strictly shotgun
- 23:11because of his size. Yes.
- 23:12And and will it work? I tend to believe it will.
- 23:14I think he's that good of a head.
- 23:16Coach, yes, I think he is not somebody that is married.
- 23:19We have to do it a specific way. He's done it, done it with
- 23:22different types of quarterbacks and because of that I think he's
- 23:25going to find a way. All right, John was in an event
- 23:27and he felt it too. John, welcome on the program.
- 23:29What? What were you referencing, Sir?
- 23:32I was at the seventh game of the World Series when the Twins won
- 23:36with Kirby Puckett. Oh my.
- 23:38My buddy was a big Twins fan, lived in Minnesota, actually
- 23:42ordered the tickets way before the season ended for game six
- 23:46and seven offered. Game offered to my brother his
- 23:51choice of six or seven. He took six, thinking there
- 23:53might not be. A 70 Nice.
- 23:55So I got a 7 and boy it was loud and so fun.
- 24:00It feels different walking into it knowing it's you're, you're
- 24:03going to see a champion crowd, doesn't it?
- 24:06Oh, it was amazing. And then and then to go outside
- 24:10and walk in the streets after the game, it was, it was an
- 24:13amazing. So let me ask you, do you still
- 24:15have the ticket? You know what?
- 24:18That's a good question. Well, you need to.
- 24:19Look for it, I hope I do. Do you do you remember what the
- 24:22face value was of the ticket? You know I don't because my
- 24:27buddy just gave it to me and. He just gave it to you.
- 24:29For what it was, wow. That's a good friend.
- 24:31That's a good. Friend.
- 24:32Yeah, he's a good friend. Yeah, uh huh.
- 24:34Good stuff, John. Thanks for listening.
- 24:35Thanks for chiming in. Appreciate the call.
- 24:38You're welcome. Yeah, good to hear from you.
- 24:39Wonder what that was. Get in price.
- 24:41So was that 91? Right 91.
- 24:45Yes, according to AI Google AI specific games held at the
- 24:51Metrodome generate generally priced in the range of 35 to
- 24:56$60.00. You've.
- 24:57Got to be kidding me. That was face value.
- 24:59Face value. What could you get him across
- 25:01the street at Hubert's for A. 100 bucks though, probably back
- 25:04then. Isn't that crazy?
- 25:05Maybe 150. Think it back, boy.
- 25:07How many people tried to get into Hubert's over the years?
- 25:11And that place wasn't very big. No, not at all.
- 25:13There was always a line. There was always and it was
- 25:15always just because there was nothing else around there other
- 25:18than the Dome. Souvenir plus, right?
- 25:21Yes, Souvenir plus and it just. Get myself an Al Newman jersey.
- 25:25And some of the stuff that they had squirreled away, I mean, in
- 25:28every nook and cranny of that facility, they had some, you
- 25:32know, you want to, you want a Twins jersey from whenever.
- 25:35I mean, they had some old, old stuff for sale, but there was
- 25:38nothing else around there. No, not at all.
- 25:40Nothing. There was a couple other places,
- 25:42but I. Don't even remember that.
- 25:43Where there were there bills, businesses, I mean there were
- 25:46not bars. There was a bank, there was a
- 25:48couple of bars like a block or two away.
- 25:50They were smaller. They're not even as big as
- 25:51Hubert's though. They're like hole hole in the.
- 25:53Wall and that's where all the scalpers stood out though, as
- 25:55across the street, because I think you had to be off
- 25:57Metrodome property and you had to go through the light there,
- 25:59whatever that street was. Well, we got Eugene Repay
- 26:02coming, but let's play going into break.
- 26:04Vince Scully on the call, Game 7. 19. 91 Well, this might be
- 26:10the only Twins highlight that I get for the year.
- 26:12The Larkin, the left hand hitter up there.
- 26:14Basin loaded one out in the game on the line.
- 26:19Then you right. Foot on the rubber, you can
- 26:22taste the pressure here in the Dome as Alejandro straightens up
- 26:26and the pits still. Larkin swing on a high fly ball
- 26:31in the left center. Dan Gladden.
- 26:44Dan Gladden scored it from 3rd. Gene Larkin #9.
- 26:47Yes, good call. Good pull on that one.
- 26:50Gene OA Wonderful pinch hitter. Never could find a full time
- 26:56role, but he was very solid in that role.
- 26:58Lefty bat off the bench. And Gladden, his hair flowing as
- 27:02the helmet flew off his head from that ground shot.
- 27:05Oh, my gosh, You know, those were some fun teams.
- 27:07Fun teams. All right, take a time.
- 27:09I'll come back to Gene Repay. We'll head down to Kansas City.
- 27:12What? Hang on, let me get you a quick
- 27:13score. Oh, yes, yes.
- 27:15I'm gonna find an update on this damn game.
- 27:17Can I? It says Michigan by a bucket
- 27:20Point spread was 12. And 1/2 it was.
- 27:22And Michigan 14 minutes left. Michigan 46, Ohio State 44.
- 27:27What Why am on the the game just switched.
- 27:32What am I watching the American Championship quarter final
- 27:35anyways? That that doesn't fire you,
- 27:37I've. Seen this on my iPad.
- 27:40Not stupid today. Saint Louis was struggling a
- 27:42little bit today. They pulled away now from GW.
- 27:44They lead it by. What were they favored by?
- 27:467 1/2, so right around the number currently.
- 27:49Kentucky and Florida in a tussle just underway about halfway
- 27:52through the 1st 2018. Florida with the lead in that
- 27:55one. What do you make of Duke's
- 27:56injuries? Should you?
- 27:57If you've got Duke tickets, should you be biting your nails
- 28:00a little bit? I think so.
- 28:01Does this open it up more for for Michigan and Duke because of
- 28:05the injuries? Duke's backup point goal for
- 28:06Michigan's. But yeah, both those teams
- 28:08injuries. Do we start to say, do we need
- 28:11to invest in Florida? Do we need to get that we
- 28:13already have Houston? Or do we even go deeper, because
- 28:18suddenly Duke's more susceptible than they would be even in the
- 28:22Sweet 60? Is Ngama going to be back for
- 28:24the tournament? I wouldn't be surprised if he
- 28:25doesn't play next weekend, but for the second weekend he comes
- 28:29because he's got a foot and he was riding around on a.
- 28:31Scooter, I didn't like the read that I had on that one read.
- 28:36Read an update another team. If you're looking deeper,
- 28:37Gonzaga, there was an update on Huff.
- 28:40Yeah, and. And they're still lying, aren't
- 28:42they? Yeah.
- 28:43They said well maybe by the 2nd. Yeah, BS.
- 28:45He's not. They said four to six in the
- 28:48middle of January and here we are.
- 28:49Right. 1230 Eugene Repay Next Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports
- 28:53Radio Network. I'm Miller Condon, welcome back
- 29:03Iowa Sports Radio Network wherever you're listening in the
- 29:05state of Iowa. Glad that you are the flagship
- 29:08is Des Moines sports station one O 6.3 KX and of course anywhere
- 29:12on the iheart app Michigan by 4 with 11:30 left in the
- 29:17second-half. Let's get down to Kansas City.
- 29:19Eugene Repay's got Iowa State covered for the Des Moines
- 29:22registered. It's Arizona.
- 29:24It's Iowa State tonight. Hello Eugene.
- 29:27Repay, how are you? I'm great, I'm great.
- 29:30It's been a great week so far in Kansas City.
- 29:32Good time at the big Total tournament and they're switching
- 29:34back to wood court. So yeah, going to miss the
- 29:36glass. Court.
- 29:37When, when, when did you really, when did you get wind of that?
- 29:41Eugene, I know your mark announced it, I think last
- 29:43night. After the last game was played.
- 29:45At some point did it start to trick a lot?
- 29:48At least they were entertaining doing that.
- 29:50It's in advance of the official announcement or did you find
- 29:54out? The media find out for the first
- 29:55time when it was actually, you know, made official.
- 29:59There were a couple of rumors that were floating around during
- 30:01the quarterfinal round yesterday, but it was one of
- 30:04those things where your mark seemed very adamant about
- 30:07keeping this class. They did it for the women's
- 30:10tournament. So I personally was kind of
- 30:12skeptical to see them switch it. But then once I think the
- 30:17official statement was sent out around 11:39 PM that they've
- 30:21made the decision and that they're going to switch back to
- 30:23what court? And then shortly after that they
- 30:26they had crews out there working overnight to remove the glass
- 30:30court and now put in the wood court.
- 30:31So I hope they got paid double overtime really.
- 30:35Did Iowa State guys say anything about it?
- 30:37We know Christian Anderson obviously went down in the game
- 30:39against Texas Tech yesterday. Did you hear any complaining
- 30:42there? I go back to Mccaslin and just
- 30:45hearing his explanation. It was very diplomatic.
- 30:48It does feel like maybe there was some marching orders from
- 30:50your mark. Let's not kill this thing, you
- 30:53know, let's I, I found it odd. What did the Iowa State guys, if
- 30:56anything, had to say about the court?
- 30:58It was interesting because I did feel like that there was some
- 31:00sort of, I don't know if it's proper to say that there was
- 31:04maybe some sort of, but it seemed like a lot of people were
- 31:06being very diplomatic about the court.
- 31:08You finally saw that players who were on eliminated teams, you
- 31:12would see them be a little more candid.
- 31:13Like you have the Kansas State players talk about how much they
- 31:16didn't like it. One player had migrants
- 31:17reportedly, but for Iowa State players, if you guys noticed.
- 31:21But in that first game against Arizona State, Joshua Jefferson
- 31:24was really slipping a lot. In the first half of that game.
- 31:27He was wearing blue John Moran threes.
- 31:29And then at halftime, he switched to a red pair of Kobe
- 31:32Sixes and he said that he had much better grip, but he seemed
- 31:36pretty annoyed within the first half, got used to it in the
- 31:39second-half, had a much better game yesterday.
- 31:41But then you saw players like came and let's see, we're
- 31:43slipping around a little bit more.
- 31:45It seemed like players like the novelty of the court.
- 31:48They they also thought that it was bounce here, that there was
- 31:50better shock absorption. But it seemed like the court
- 31:53itself with the glass surface was just not meant for all the
- 31:56different cuts, all the different sudden movements and
- 31:58twists and turns. But I would say I was able to
- 32:02fare pretty well. I mean, they've dismantled both
- 32:04their opponents so far. But Jamari Bateman, I asked him,
- 32:07do you think that this could be the future?
- 32:09And he said, yeah, But maybe if they're able to perfect the the
- 32:13grip on it and maybe get as close to what is possible.
- 32:15But the things like the lights and the colors were cool, not
- 32:20too distracting. But it was definitely a unique
- 32:22experience and a unique experiment for sure.
- 32:24Do you know much that that cost Eugene?
- 32:28I get, oh man, I wish, I wish I had the exact number.
- 32:31I mean, I've seen different numbers thrown around on
- 32:33Twitter. I don't know how verified it is
- 32:35or how true it is, but I would imagine at least a few million.
- 32:39One tweet that I saw said 10 million.
- 32:40I don't know how true that is, but it looked very very
- 32:44expensive all. Right.
- 32:45Let's go back to that big Monday.
- 32:46I know Heinz pulled ranked and he flew to Tucson, left you at
- 32:49home here in Des Moines. So you were like the rest of us
- 32:52watching it on TV. But a big Monday game, it did
- 32:56not go well for Iowa State. That was, I think 16 points was
- 32:59the was the deficit in that one. When it was all said and done,
- 33:04What does what does Iowa State, did they draw from that game
- 33:08against Arizona last time? Was that brought up at all what
- 33:11the Wildcats did to them and how they'll try to counteract that
- 33:14tonight? One positive was that I felt for
- 33:18at least the first half, they played pretty well defensively
- 33:20and they played pretty well throughout, especially keeping
- 33:23Arizona within reach for the 1st 16 minutes off the backbones of
- 33:27its physicality and defense. However, the big main flaw or
- 33:32the the main thing that really stuck out to them was just their
- 33:34offensive execution. They could not score for the
- 33:37life of them and certainly there are those days where the shots
- 33:40just don't drop or things like that.
- 33:42But it felt like one of those things where Arizona's this line
- 33:46rim protection was just so disruptive and they forced Iowa
- 33:49State to settle for perimeter shots or take mid range jumpers
- 33:52or not be able to impose themselves inside.
- 33:56So they feel like they need to get much better ball movement.
- 33:58They need to be a little more assertive and aggressive.
- 34:00Don't be scared by Arizona size. You have Crevis inside at 72 Co
- 34:05Pete is an absolute athlete and a couple of other big, big men
- 34:08in front. But offense is going to be move
- 34:12the ball, stay aggressive, be deliberate and defensively,
- 34:17although they played well over the 1st 16 minutes and keeping
- 34:20it close and keeping it a low scoring game, can they extend
- 34:23that to a 40 minutes or continue to impose their will defensively
- 34:28like they have so far in these first two games?
- 34:30Speaking of size, we've seen Dom played up play at a very high
- 34:33level here lately. 2 double figure scoring games in the last
- 34:37three. He had just two of those all
- 34:39season long before that. He's playing at a better level.
- 34:42Minutes are about the same. But what have you seen out of
- 34:44him here recently, out of Plato becoming more comfortable as a
- 34:47freshman coming over from Germany, and you think against a
- 34:50big team like Arizona, maybe a guy that could help out even a
- 34:53little bit more here tonight? Yeah, The thing that impressed
- 34:55me about Plato is he doesn't seem as shy when he gets on the
- 34:58court. When he's boxing out or when
- 35:00he's posting up a guy. He just looks more aggressive.
- 35:02He looks to be the aggressor. I think that that has just come
- 35:05with being more acclimated to the physicality of the Big 12
- 35:08and Division One college basketball he's getting after
- 35:11now. He seems to be the guy that's
- 35:12initiating the contact rather than trying to absorb it or, or
- 35:16do what he needs to do. And it's really demonstrated in
- 35:19his play. You'd like you mentioned that
- 35:21the the 2 double digit scoring games, that's been big for him,
- 35:24but also his presence on the glass and, and defensively, he
- 35:27just seems a lot more productive, a lot more complete,
- 35:29a lot more well-rounded. And for Iowa State, that's huge
- 35:32considering how he's the only big man off the bench really.
- 35:36And Blake Buchanan and Joshua Jefferson can't play all 40
- 35:39minutes as much as sometimes You'd like to see them do that.
- 35:42So for Plato to come in and and be more dependable and be more
- 35:45alive has been huge, especially in this postseason.
- 35:48Obviously Moncholovich A subpar game for him yesterday.
- 35:51What did what did they do different?
- 35:54What did Texas Tech have planned for him?
- 35:56He put up 20 against them in the loss earlier this year in in
- 36:01Ames. What did they do yesterday to
- 36:03take Moncholovich out of his game?
- 36:06He seemed more intended and just tracking him down and then
- 36:09staying close to him. But it also just felt like one
- 36:11of those games where the paint was just firing for Iowa State.
- 36:14They just completely dominated on both sides of the court.
- 36:17They're out scoring Texas Tech. I think it was like 46 to 18 in
- 36:21the paint. So it was just one of those
- 36:22where I don't. I'm not sure if it was
- 36:24necessarily Texas Tech had him on clamps or if it was just a
- 36:28cold day for Mom Sheldon. It just seemed like one of those
- 36:30days where it just called for a big day on the inside and you
- 36:33take what the defenses are giving you.
- 36:35And when John with Jefferson is having that kind of night that
- 36:38he did. And same for Tame and Lipsy
- 36:40splashing inside. It's been huge, but definitely a
- 36:42quieter game for for Milam Chilovich.
- 36:45Who would have thought that Tame and Lipsy would be the guy
- 36:47that's flinging it from deep and going four of seven?
- 36:50But I'm curious to see how he's able to bounce back because
- 36:53Arizona gave him some fits and they have the length and
- 36:55athleticism to keep up with him. And we've seen how the BYU and
- 36:59and some of those more athletic digs are able to to really lock
- 37:03in on Mom Kilovich. And I'm curious to see if he's
- 37:05able to have a bounce back performance against these guys
- 37:07because they're going to need them.
- 37:08We look at this, obviously you talk about a resume building
- 37:11win. That would be tonight against
- 37:13Arizona. If they can do that, they're
- 37:15right on that cut line between A2 and a three.
- 37:17You can argue it doesn't really matter, but what are your
- 37:20thoughts on this? The difference between a two
- 37:22seed and a three seed in the NCAA tournament?
- 37:25Is it a big difference for the Cyclone team?
- 37:27I think it would help, but I feel like, you know, in March,
- 37:30you got to take whatever edge or whatever advantage you can get
- 37:33to help make your path a little bit more manageable.
- 37:36I think when you're looking at A2, you're dealing with a 710 as
- 37:39opposed to a 611. So that that certainly helps.
- 37:42But I think that also just if you're able to beat Arizona,
- 37:46just to say that you have that on your resume, whether or not
- 37:50it's enough to put you to two or three, that's debatable.
- 37:53But I think The thing is that momentum boost coming off of
- 37:57that huge win will be something that you can go back on and
- 38:01carry with you moving Florida to the NCAA tournament when it
- 38:04really is win or go home. But I I think that there is a
- 38:08big difference. I know sometimes the conference
- 38:11tournament has been underappreciated given how
- 38:13sometimes it feels like teams aren't punished for losing or or
- 38:16whatever may be. But a win over Arizona, I think
- 38:19would actually lift them over to the 2 and we'll see what happens
- 38:22tonight. What do you do you have an
- 38:24opinion at all in the late game? Kansas, I thought they, you
- 38:27know, by the skin of their teeth got by TCU last night.
- 38:30Obviously Houston's playing really good basketball right
- 38:32now. That was a fun game.
- 38:33Houston and BY this Debance is really something isn't he?
- 38:36He's growing on, but I think he might be the best player in the
- 38:39in the country. I I I know Boozer is going to
- 38:41win the award. I'm not sure Debance is not
- 38:43going to be the first name called once we get to the NBA
- 38:46draft. But that aside, you have an
- 38:47opinion on the on the nightcap tonight in the Big 12?
- 38:52Yeah, I was I was a little impressed by TCU.
- 38:54It feels like a team that, yeah, they're not flashy, They don't
- 38:58they don't really look sexy on the court, but they kept the
- 39:01whole time and they get Darren Peterson and The Jayhawks and
- 39:04fits. It actually made that victory
- 39:07over Iowa State a little more impressive, a little more
- 39:09palatable as well. But TCU was was tough.
- 39:12They were they were they really impressed me.
- 39:13And I love that BYU Houston game that was much watched TV there.
- 39:17Kingston Fleming versus AJ the Bansa.
- 39:20And I'm with you. I was surprised that he didn't,
- 39:23You know, you had Jaden Bradley before AJ Devansa or Joshua
- 39:27Jefferson, but Devansa was was electric.
- 39:30I don't know how Darren Peterson, I know he's probably
- 39:33going to be the number one pick still, but I I love Advance's
- 39:36game more. He was electric.
- 39:37Definitely was a great game. You mentioned TCU and how
- 39:41interesting would it be if we get TCU Iowa in an 8-9 game to
- 39:44wouldn't that be something is that?
- 39:46Where they are in the. They're on that 8-9 fringe too,
- 39:49just like the Hawkeye. So we very well could see that.
- 39:52You know, what do you look at the Big 12 seeing these teams
- 39:54throughout the course of the year?
- 39:56Do you think they're set up for success?
- 39:58We know Texas Tech without topping, different kind of
- 40:00conversation with them. But do you believe that this
- 40:02team battle tested, ready to go and we're going to see a lot of
- 40:05success once the brackets come out and the play begins next
- 40:08Thursday? Yeah, I do think so.
- 40:10It really is a meat, really is a meat grinder of a conference.
- 40:14And especially when you look at Iowa State when it was going
- 40:16through that tough February stretch today where they took
- 40:19some losses. This is a team that now the
- 40:21first two games look like they've grown and evolved from
- 40:24that. I'm curious to see what it'll
- 40:26look like against Arizona on a neutral floor.
- 40:28But just looking from top to bottom and looking at some of
- 40:31the other heavyweights in the conference, it just looks like
- 40:34each team has gotten better. Iron sharpens iron and I'm
- 40:37really excited to see what this NCAA Tournament looks like for
- 40:40not only Iowa State, but the other Big 12 teams.
- 40:42Like, it really does seem like you look at any other conference
- 40:46or power conference, how much, you know, we're at the point
- 40:50where all the teams participating in the
- 40:52quarterfinals are projected NCAA tournament team and there isn't
- 40:55a single other conference that could say that for their
- 40:58conference tournament. So I really do believe that as a
- 41:01result of just competing in the Big 12, it's going to pay off
- 41:04for all those teams and NCAA Tournament, of course, you still
- 41:07got to do and you got to avoid the upset and the Cinderella
- 41:10runs. But it really does seem like the
- 41:13teams and just being in this kind of grind really does set
- 41:16teams up for success. Eugene, do you guys have your
- 41:19marching orders? Is it kind of dependent if they
- 41:21get shipped to Saint Louis or Oklahoma City, something that is
- 41:25drivable that both you guys are going to go, do you know net yet
- 41:27what the coverage is going to look like next week at the
- 41:29register? It sounded like no matter where
- 41:32it is, even if they have to ship us to Mars or we have to go
- 41:35there, Travis Hines and I will be there.
- 41:38And we're very excited about that.
- 41:39Yeah. Whether it's drive, playing
- 41:41trains and automobiles, we're going to find a way to get
- 41:43there. Awesome.
- 41:44Last thing this will be, correct me if I'm wrong, your first
- 41:47Friday night in Kansas City, your first Friday night session
- 41:51in KC, correct. And man, it's a whole different
- 41:53animal as this tournament goes on, as I'm sure you're starting
- 41:56to be come very aware. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 41:59I actually stayed in the arena for the other quarterfinal games
- 42:02just because it was such a fun atmosphere to be in and I really
- 42:05enjoyed it. And then I know the semifinal
- 42:08lineup for a conference tournament, especially when you
- 42:10look at these two matchups tonight, it's going to be
- 42:13through the roof and and I'm very excited about that.
- 42:15I'm definitely going to stick around for that second game
- 42:18after Iowa State plays, even win or lose, just because of how
- 42:21high profile it is. And the atmosphere was fun
- 42:24yesterday, but I can only imagine now with it Friday, more
- 42:27people coming down, more people being able to drive after work.
- 42:30It's going to be a really great time at the T-Mobile Center.
- 42:34No question, Eugene, thanks for doing this.
- 42:36We will either talk to you Thursday or Friday depending on
- 42:38when they play and what time they play if your schedule
- 42:41allows next week. Thank you, Eugene.
- 42:42Appreciate it as always. Thank you guys, enjoy the games
- 42:46and have a good weekend. Yeah, you're the same Eugene
- 42:47repay Des Moines Register as we check in with Eugene.
- 42:52Fun, fun place to be. No, no doubt about that.
- 42:55Have you seen? I'm not that I'm going to play,
- 42:57I'm just I'm just more curious. NBA draft markets at all.
- 43:01I haven't. How do you not take the pants?
- 43:04Trent? He's so good.
- 43:06He's got an NBA body already. He's what, 69?
- 43:10He's a thick dude. I mean, I get Peterson's hell of
- 43:13a player, but does he really love the game?
- 43:15Doesn't feel like it. It doesn't feel like that, does
- 43:17it? I don't know.
- 43:20All right, take the time. I'll come back.
- 43:21We'll finish up the first hour of the program.
- 43:23Hour number two, Tom Caker, 4 of you will get a chance to play
- 43:27for some chicken coop. We'll tell you more about that.
- 43:29Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 43:34Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 43:35Final couple of minutes, Hour number one, Tom Caker kicks off
- 43:38the second hour. More Hawk talk with Tom to kick
- 43:42off hour number two. And I say more because I want to
- 43:44end with a little Iowa conversation here.
- 43:47You didn't. Obviously we didn't have a show
- 43:49yesterday. You were calling the game.
- 43:51When you watch the game back, what was maybe your take away
- 43:54from what you saw in the 40 minutes?
- 43:55Bruce Thornton's a stud. He's really good, isn't he?
- 43:57And have until he's a difference.
- 43:59Absolutely, and mention that leading into the game.
- 44:01You said it repeatedly through the week.
- 44:02It was going to be a completely different game than what we saw
- 44:05in Iowa City. You know, they were up 12-6, but
- 44:08it was still yet another slow start offensively.
- 44:13I want to see going forward this team offensively, they can't
- 44:16play at this pace. They just can't.
- 44:18I don't think it's going to work.
- 44:19And in the. So you want to see the game back
- 44:21to the 50s? No, I want to see the game
- 44:24playing at a faster pace. Faster.
- 44:26Yes, absolutely. How many times throughout the
- 44:28course of this season have we seen them pass up good shots?
- 44:32It needs to stop just to get it back into starts his hands to
- 44:35get an awful. Shot Are they playing the slow
- 44:36pace because maybe the fatigue factor's setting in I.
- 44:39Don't think so. Because they played this way all
- 44:40year. Yeah, they've, I don't think
- 44:44playing like that, even with a point guard as good as Bennett
- 44:47Sturtz, that it's going to work. Not at a high level.
- 44:51I did enjoy, though, what McCollum said after the game and
- 44:54going from really good. He's really good in press
- 44:56conferences. He's excellent.
- 44:57He really is. I like listening to him.
- 44:58I do. Speak.
- 44:59It's not just cliches and coach speak.
- 45:01There is substance behind what he says.
- 45:04Oh. The Hassan wasn't fouled, but
- 45:05anyways. No, no, and I think they roped A
- 45:09doped him. I'm sure you know what I
- 45:10couldn't agree with? You more I'm sure they were
- 45:12yelling foul yes yes, but we're not actually but column heard
- 45:15that yes absolutely a whole bench.
- 45:16I'm sure Hassan heard. It Yes, he did, and he hoisted
- 45:19it up and it was a bad. Shot it was.
- 45:21Did you think Howard Shot was going in?
- 45:23Yes, I did too. And and watching the repo, I
- 45:26thought he I thought he was going to bank in because it hit
- 45:29though it hit the back iron and kind of got a piece of the
- 45:31backboard there. I thought he was going to bank
- 45:32that thing, but I thought it was good out of his head.
- 45:35This thing's going to fall. They're going to somehow force
- 45:37overtime. What I love about this squad is
- 45:40they always battle back seemingly every single time they
- 45:43get down. They can argue they shouldn't be
- 45:45down to 16 to Ohio State, a team that they're the.
- 45:48Ohio State's beating Michigan today.
- 45:49They are. They are, but they are a very
- 45:52similar team to them. Regardless.
- 45:54This team battles, they fight, now they just need to go out and
- 45:57get some more players. Our 2 coming up next.
- 46:00Tom Caker will kick it off. 4 of you will have a chance to play
- 46:03for some grub from the chicken coop and trench plays of the
- 46:06day. Circus Sports sponsors Miller
- 46:08and Condon Our 2 coming up.
