- 0:07Welcome into the postgame podcast.
- 0:09Falcons 27, Rams 24. Bejon best running
- 0:14back in the NFL. Falcons 3 and 0 now
- 0:16that they've been eliminated from the
- 0:17playoffs. But I'm actually here with the
- 0:19King.
- 0:19>> It's a good time to do it, right? It's a
- 0:21good time to start winning.
- 0:22>> Yeah. Now that So we can't have a good
- 0:23draft pick. Um but I'm here with the
- 0:26King to talk about the Queens. They were
- 0:28pretty bad.
- 0:30>> Okay.
- 0:30>> They're not good at defense. Um, we saw
- 0:33that this game was over very quickly for
- 0:35a game that started at 9:00 p.m.
- 0:36>> Yes. 106-65.
- 0:38Auburn basketball takes its
- 0:40non-conference finale. Uh, we we were we
- 0:42were the king and queens. Okay, that
- 0:44works pretty well. Uh, we we were, you
- 0:46know, Jeff Sheer, the great Jeff Sheer
- 0:48is the is the king of puns, so we asked
- 0:50him if he would weave some queen
- 0:52references, as in the band, into his
- 0:54game story. So, we'll see if that
- 0:55happened in this one. Yeah. I mean,
- 0:57really no uh no match, you know, no no
- 0:59competition really for Auburn tonight.
- 1:01We knew that was going to be the case,
- 1:03as you mentioned, particularly on
- 1:04defense. Uh 348 in Ken Palm, I think, is
- 1:07is what Queens entered this game in um
- 1:10defensively, but they're a top 100 team
- 1:12nationally in offense. And so that side
- 1:14of things, as Steven Pearl talked about
- 1:15in his postgame, was much more
- 1:17impressive. Um it was a 30-4 start.
- 1:20That's kind of the number I like look
- 1:21at. That's the one where when it pops up
- 1:23on your score bug on the bottom, you're
- 1:24like, whoa, 30 to4. Um, Auburn led by 38
- 1:27in the first half, but that was really
- 1:28the, you know, they came out, um, Queens
- 1:31only had one field goal for a really
- 1:32long time and they started one of eight
- 1:34in the game. By the time they had seven
- 1:35turnovers, um, they also had seven
- 1:37missed shots. And so Auburn dominated
- 1:40the, uh, the first half of this one. Not
- 1:42as crisp of a second half for them
- 1:45defensively, um, but still on the other
- 1:47end, anytime you get to 106 points, um,
- 1:49always a good thing. And then uh a
- 1:51couple guys who Patrick we've sort of
- 1:53learned that Kevin Overton and Elijah
- 1:55Freeman when they play well those thing
- 1:57that usually bodess well for Auburn. I
- 2:00don't think we went into this season
- 2:02thinking Kevin Overton was going to be
- 2:04that much of a scorer. Like it was kind
- 2:06of that veteran defensive presence as a
- 2:08guard is what we kind of knew him as. Um
- 2:10but Stephen Pearl talked about it
- 2:11afterwards. You look this is the third
- 2:12time in the last five games he's gone
- 2:13over 20 points. Steven said it like he
- 2:16he could be Auburn's third score. like
- 2:17he could be that next guy after Keshan
- 2:19Hall and and Tahad Pedford and uh and
- 2:22then Elijah Freeman now this is the
- 2:23third game for him coming off the bench.
- 2:25We saw him do that against Chattanooga.
- 2:27Um looked really comfortable in that
- 2:29game and uh boy 50 combined points for
- 2:31those guys gave gave Auburn quite a
- 2:33spark tonight.
- 2:34>> Yeah, I mean it was a it was a fast jump
- 2:36and I think Kevin Overton it was the
- 2:37first time in his career he's had
- 2:38back-to-back 20 point games as well. But
- 2:41yeah, I the fast start which is
- 2:43important against a team like this.
- 2:45Pearl referenced the crowd and it being
- 2:47relatively packed for a 9 pm game in the
- 2:50week between Christmas and New Year's.
- 2:51Um, and they basically did what they
- 2:53needed to do. Of course, for Queens, for
- 2:56a team that makes I think it was 10.8
- 2:59threes a game and that average that's in
- 3:02the top 25 nationally and to not get
- 3:04your first three-pointer until the 7:30
- 3:07mark of the second half, like you're
- 3:09just you're not going to win a
- 3:10basketball game no matter who you are if
- 3:11that's what's happening. And so Auburn
- 3:13takes care of business.
- 3:16>> I think you said it best in your story
- 3:17of obviously they struggled against the
- 3:20premier programs they played. Not I
- 3:22don't know, you might want to keep
- 3:22talking about this game, but to shift to
- 3:24bigger things.
- 3:25>> Sure.
- 3:26>> They lost to all of those top 10 teams
- 3:28by big margins in a lot of them, but
- 3:31they didn't have a bad loss. And I think
- 3:32that's what tonight was is you take care
- 3:34of business. You know, you get running
- 3:37again. You know, you had a big break
- 3:39after Christmas. there's a longer break
- 3:41before Georgia, but we all know what's
- 3:44coming.
- 3:44>> Yeah, for sure. I mean, this this was an
- 3:46important break for this team um to get
- 3:47healthy in a uh in a number of areas. Of
- 3:50course, Todd Pedford, he turned his
- 3:51ankle against uh against Purdue. Ended
- 3:53up not really being anything. Um kind of
- 3:55had done that apparently throughout his
- 3:57career as Steve Pearl said going back to
- 3:58high school. That's something that's
- 3:59kind of bothered him. Uh I think Keshan
- 4:01Murphy was the one where it's like we
- 4:02just kept waiting for him to almost like
- 4:04Jai Broom last year when he had a couple
- 4:06injuries that just couldn't get out of
- 4:07the way. Uh Murphy hasn't been
- 4:09unavailable. He hasn't necessarily been
- 4:12actively injured, but it's just been
- 4:13that lingering knee, that lingering hip,
- 4:15and he talked about it in the in the
- 4:17postgame press conference, which if
- 4:18you're watching this on YouTube, you can
- 4:19go watch those interviews um as well.
- 4:21Just kind of getting home, getting back
- 4:22in Birmingham, you know, able to to rest
- 4:24a little bit. And you saw a team that
- 4:25came out tonight, Steen Pearl was not
- 4:27worried about it, but wondering if the
- 4:29team would have that response after a
- 4:31long break.
- 4:32>> We mentioned a 30 to4 start to the game.
- 4:34Um the crowd you mentioned as well,
- 4:36>> you know, not an insignificant factor to
- 4:39discuss in this game because Patrick is
- 4:41a late late tip off nine o'clock local
- 4:43time. Um you know, for anyone, you know,
- 4:45if if you're on Eastern time, you know,
- 4:47starting at 10:00 p.m. and we're on
- 4:49break, it's December 29th. All you know,
- 4:51lots of lots of uh lots of kids here at
- 4:53the university are gone. Um but, you
- 4:55know, everyone's standing up for the
- 4:56anthem. And I was looking around. I was
- 4:57like, this it filled out really well.
- 4:59And Stephen Pearl said to his team
- 5:00before the game, you know, look around
- 5:01and and and kind of soak that in and
- 5:03enjoy it. Um and so Auburn thought they
- 5:05would have to make their own energy.
- 5:06That's what Keshan Murphy said, but they
- 5:08didn't really have to in this game.
- 5:09Yeah. A couple more nuggets here. Um a
- 5:11season high, excuse me, 15
- 5:12three-pointers for Auburn in this game.
- 5:14A careerhigh nine assists for Todd
- 5:17Pedford. His Neville Arena shooting
- 5:19struggles continue. He just can't shoot
- 5:21the ball in this building this season,
- 5:22but he can pass the ball really, really
- 5:24well, and they apparently challenged him
- 5:26to that this week. So now Patrick, this
- 5:28is the finale of non-conference play.
- 5:30Nine and four, Auburn heads into SEC
- 5:32competition. And as you mentioned, if
- 5:35you had told people before the season,
- 5:37hey, you're going to exit non-conference
- 5:39play and your only losses are going to
- 5:40be to those teams are all in the top 10
- 5:42right now,
- 5:43>> by the way, and the three bad ones are
- 5:45all to top five teams.
- 5:47>> You would take that. What you mentioned
- 5:49is is the is the crux of it. How can
- 5:52they avoid because you're going to have
- 5:53road games against Tennessee. You're
- 5:55going to have road games against
- 5:56Florida. Those teams are very, very
- 5:58capable of letting a game get away from
- 6:00you. How do you avoid that moving
- 6:02forward? And shoot, Georgia looks much
- 6:04improved. This is, I believe, 12- one is
- 6:06the is the record. They they exit
- 6:08non-conference play with not a very
- 6:10difficult schedule at all. Only one quad
- 6:12one game for them and they lost to uh to
- 6:14Clemson,
- 6:15>> but uh yeah, Patrick, it's it's about to
- 6:17get real for for this team heading into
- 6:18SEC play. The league is not as good as
- 6:20it was last year. So, maybe that means
- 6:23you actually have to be a little bit
- 6:24better than maybe we thought. Can you be
- 6:27a 500 SEC team and make the tournament?
- 6:29I'm not sure. I'm not sure if you can
- 6:31this season. It's not a super strong
- 6:32league like it was last year and it uh
- 6:34it starts on Saturday in Athens.
- 6:36>> Yeah. And I I think
- 6:38>> it's not granted for SEC standards and
- 6:42what Auburn's done in non-conference.
- 6:44It's not as hard of a start. I mean,
- 6:45you're not starting like with Tennessee
- 6:46or something, but like it's fairly mild.
- 6:49>> Going to Athens, they're ranked. They're
- 6:51excited. They're on a 10-ame win streak.
- 6:53Um it's their best this their third best
- 6:55start in program history. I was reading
- 6:57some things today and I'll pull the stat
- 6:59at some point between now and then, but
- 7:01Auburn's won a lot up there recently.
- 7:04Auburn's won against them a lot
- 7:05recently. So, you know, they're going to
- 7:06be hungry. It's a rivalry game. Auburn's
- 7:09obviously been very relevant in
- 7:11basketball recently and this would be a
- 7:12marquee win for them. But I feel like a
- 7:15lot of these first few SEC games, you
- 7:18know, for Auburn, they've been so
- 7:19tested. I feel like we know so much
- 7:21because of the caliber opponent. Whereas
- 7:22with someone like Georgia, we just like
- 7:24they could be really good. they could be
- 7:26number 20 like that could be fair or it
- 7:28could just be based off who they've
- 7:30played and how we've gotten here and so
- 7:31it's really going to be interesting to
- 7:33see how that shapes up but
- 7:34>> yeah I I think the biggest thing is and
- 7:37Steven said that as well and I feel like
- 7:39DHD mostly always gets up for the big
- 7:41games but it's like if you could pair
- 7:43the assist with making some more of the
- 7:45shots because Stephen said he liked a
- 7:46lot of the shots they took and then
- 7:48again if Kevin and Elijah can keep it
- 7:51going you feel like you have a really
- 7:53good start to start strong with the game
- 7:55in Athens and then&m and Arkansas coming
- 7:58here.
- 7:59>> I mean, Georgia may be I was looking
- 8:00kind of at that first stretch if you
- 8:02separate the SEC schedule into thirds
- 8:04being an 18game schedule.
- 8:06>> Those first six games is the toughest
- 8:08game of all of those in Athens on
- 8:10Saturday. It might be. Um, now the best
- 8:13team of that stretch, Arkansas comes
- 8:14here. I I think is kind of what we look
- 8:16at right now analytically and just the
- 8:18potential of that team. Arkansas comes
- 8:20here, but you get that game at home.
- 8:21Your home openers against Texas A&M,
- 8:23they've had a lot of struggles in
- 8:24non-conference play. Your other two road
- 8:26games in that first stretch, Missouri
- 8:27and Old Miss, they've they've had a lot
- 8:29of struggles in non-conference play. I'm
- 8:31blanking on the other team that has to
- 8:32come here to uh to Neville Arena. And
- 8:34then after that, you go to Florida and
- 8:36Tennessee back-to-back Saturdays. And so
- 8:38that it starts to really ramp up.
- 8:39Obviously, you start to mix the Alabama
- 8:41game in there, the Alabama games in
- 8:43there. You start to mix Kentucky in
- 8:44there as well. But yeah, it's it's sort
- 8:46of a mild start for this team. I I I
- 8:49remember back when the schedule was
- 8:50released, I really like the way it paces
- 8:52out. Um, but you know, if they if they
- 8:54go to Georgia and like you said,
- 8:55Georgia's a good team. Now, are they
- 8:57really good or have they just beaten the
- 8:59teams? We're going to find that out.
- 9:00Good Auburn teams have been tested
- 9:02there. Good Auburn teams have lost
- 9:03there. Uh, Janibum second season, I
- 9:05remember they they opened SC play there
- 9:06and they lost. They lost like 10
- 9:08>> in that game. Um, I remember the the the
- 9:10Jabari Smith team was up by a bunch. Had
- 9:13to had to win it at the end. The final
- 9:14four team had to win it at the end. They
- 9:16had to grind one out last year when Jana
- 9:17Broom was injured. So, it's not easy to
- 9:19go play there in Athens. But, we it's
- 9:21just it's such an interesting spot,
- 9:23Patrick, because we think you you should
- 9:25know so much about a team after
- 9:26non-conference play, and we really we
- 9:28do, but at the same time, some of these
- 9:31games have just gotten away so quickly.
- 9:33It's like, are they going to have
- 9:35opportunities away from home against
- 9:38strong opponents to make those games
- 9:40competitive? Like, it's just it's it's
- 9:42an interesting place this team's in
- 9:43right now. And I think that's the thing
- 9:44is like yes, there are things you need
- 9:46to do better at so that when you go to
- 9:49Tennessee or when you go to Florida or
- 9:51Alabama, it's not a 20 point game at the
- 9:54half. But at the same time,
- 9:56>> like the gaming out of like where can
- 9:58you pick off the wins like going to
- 10:00Oklahoma or going to Missouri or even
- 10:03Georgia just to start SEC play because
- 10:05they haven't seen the opponents you have
- 10:07and they aren't as battle tested. Those
- 10:09are the ones where I'm like, those are
- 10:10the ones you can pick off and then you
- 10:12can take care of business at home in a
- 10:14lot of these other games and you can
- 10:15start to build a pretty good resume. But
- 10:18of course, if you want to take that jump
- 10:20and be more competitive in Knoxville or
- 10:22Gainesville, that's kind of where
- 10:24everything would have to come together.
- 10:25One question I have for you, it's the
- 10:27holiday season. New Year's resolution.
- 10:29If you had to give this team a New
- 10:31Year's resolution going into SEC play of
- 10:34like this would be a great thing to work
- 10:35on, what would it be? I'm putting you on
- 10:37the spot. I did not I I mean, I guess
- 10:39I'll just because I don't have one off
- 10:41the top of the the dome, I guess I'll
- 10:43just defer to the point Steven Pearl
- 10:46always makes, and that is to focus on
- 10:47defense
- 10:48>> first and foremost. Um, I think this
- 10:51team has a lot of tools
- 10:54to be very competent defensively, but
- 10:56right now, I can't remember the number
- 10:57he said. Did he say top 60 defensively?
- 11:00I think that was kind of the range that
- 11:01Steam Pearl threw out. Maybe top 50. He
- 11:03was like, "Look, we know we're going to
- 11:04score some points." I think Ken Palm,
- 11:05they're like a top 15 offense right now,
- 11:06but they need to be in that higher range
- 11:09defensively. And so I think just getting
- 11:10that buy in and getting more consistency
- 11:12from top to bottom would be my
- 11:13resolution um for this Auburn team
- 11:16because the offense is going to come and
- 11:18and even in that Purdue game, they score
- 11:20only 60 points, but Steven Pearl comes
- 11:22back to us next week, the the week that
- 11:24followed, and he was like, "Guys, we got
- 11:26a bunch of good shots like missed I
- 11:27think he said they missed 12 layups and
- 11:29they missed nine open threes." And it's
- 11:30like, you get half of those, you're
- 11:32talking about an 80-point game. So, I
- 11:33think there's really not much concern
- 11:34about that side of the ball. Um, it's
- 11:36it's more on defense. I think just sort
- 11:38of a top down if they can go from being
- 11:41a C++ defensive team to a B defensive
- 11:44team, I think that's a really big deal
- 11:46for them in in SEC play. Um, well,
- 11:48Patrick, it's it's going to be like we
- 11:50talked about, it's going to be a really
- 11:50really intriguing SEC slate. Um, the
- 11:53first SEC
- 11:55>> schedule of the of the Steven Pearl era,
- 11:57I guess, and and we'll see what this
- 11:58team is. Well, you know, right now I
- 11:59think we all kind of perceive them as a
- 12:02lower tier NCAA tournament team. Like we
- 12:04still think they're clearly a tournament
- 12:05team. We think they're middle of the
- 12:07pack in the SEC, but those things start
- 12:09to sway. We start to learn a lot more
- 12:10when we get into conference competition.
- 12:12And so, uh, we'll both be there in
- 12:13Athens on on Saturday for what should be
- 12:15a a great game. Rules reversed a little
- 12:17bit now because Georgia is actually a
- 12:18ranked team. Auburn's just right outside
- 12:20and that doesn't really matter, but uh,
- 12:22it would technically I'm sure they'll be
- 12:23favored to technically be an upset if
- 12:24Auburn were to win in Athens. So, you're
- 12:26not used to necessarily seeing that. So,
- 12:28uh, for Patrick Bingham, I'm Nathan
- 12:30King. Thank you guys so much for tuning
- 12:31in to the, uh, the postgame pod. And,
- 12:34um, sorry Patrick, I don't have a on the
- 12:36spot question for you, but, uh, happy,
- 12:38happy new year to you. Hope you had a
- 12:39merry Christmas. Hope all of our
- 12:41subscribers had a nice, um, safe and
- 12:43enjoyable holiday season. I know that
- 12:45>> football has been the source of some
- 12:47frustrations of late. If we're recording
- 12:49this, well, we're not recording it on
- 12:50the day anymore because it's like 1:00.
- 12:52Um, but yesterday, Cam Coleman, you
- 12:53declared that he'll be entering the the
- 12:55transfer portal. Um, and so as me and
- 12:57Christian talked about our podcast, just
- 12:58kind of preaching patience there. Uh,
- 13:00not saying
- 13:01>> I will also be entering the transfer
- 13:02port.
- 13:03>> Oh, I'm Well, that really sucks. And now
- 13:04we won't have a video guy, but uh, you
- 13:06know, if you're looking for a for
- 13:08something to to take your mind off it, I
- 13:10guess, is the point I'm trying to make.
- 13:11Um, the Auburn basketball team is about
- 13:13to get set to try to, uh, try to have a
- 13:15good SEC season and u become a
- 13:17tournament tournament team in year one
- 13:19under Steven Pearl. So, we're excited to
- 13:20dive into that. So, for Patrick, uh,
- 13:22please head over to aubbertcover.com.
- 13:24We'll have all this covered for you guys
- 13:27and we will talk to you guys soon.
