2:16
to kick off the week, a week where I'm going to be away for
2:19
two days this week. More than that coming up a little bit later on
2:23
No Mayor good one today for her normal first Monday of the month, visit
2:25
her chief of staff, though Matt Goodwoo or Matt Sutton, I should say,
2:29
is here today. We're also going to be joined by former Mayor Danny
2:31
Jones. I asked Danny to come in to weigh in on the death of
2:35
former Charleston Mayor Hutchinson that was announced over the last couple of days. Danny,
2:39
we'll be weighing on that, weighing in on that. We're also going
2:44
to ask Matt to stick around to answer any questions and concerns you have about
2:46
anything were lading to the city of Charleston. The big news from the weekend
2:52
actually happened on Friday was the party switch by Senator Joe Manchin. He announced
2:55
that publicly on Friday, he's switching his party from ACRAT to Independent. Not
3:00
coincidentally, on the final day one can switch their party to try to run
3:05
for office in the November general election. And interesting to get Nanny to weigh
3:08
in on that too. Plus, you know I love to talk about food.
3:12
There's a new food truck in the area, but this one's a little
3:14
bit different. Heather Hardman from Trojan Landy Marine is the one in charge of
3:17
it. She's gonna be stopping by as well. Plus, as I said,

3:31
newest member of the Canawa County Commission. He was named that post on Thursday
3:35
by the other two commissioners, commission President Lance Wheeler and commission Ben Slango.
3:38
Commissioner Mark Slotdink joins us now in the par Marster's studio. Commissioner, good
3:43
morning, welcome to the show. Good morning, Thank you for inviting me
3:46
this morning, Thank you for being here. So congratulations on the appointment.
3:50
Thank you, Let's talk about the process. Commissioner Kent Carper, a fixture
3:54
in an icon in Kanawha County, resigns the post a couple of days before
3:58
the May primary. The store where everyone knows the allegations and controversies around mister
4:01
Carper. No need to rehash that. He resigns but still on the ballot
4:05
because it was too late to take him off. He then loses in the
4:08
primary to former Secretary of State Natalie Tenant. She'll move on to face former
4:13
State Senator Chris Walters in the November general. But mister Carper's term is an
4:16
over until January of next year. Someone had to take his place, and
4:20
they had to be from the correct magisterial district and had to be a Democrat,
4:24
as that was the party of mister Carper. Seven names through their hat
4:30
into the proverbial ring. The ones that were qualified, as I said,
4:32
they had to be the same party, and they had to live in the
4:34
right magisterial district, and they choose. They chose you. So congratulations Aget.
4:39
For those who may not know, give us the bio Mark Slotnyk so
4:45
I came here actually in nineteen ninety I say, I always say, I'm
4:46
a citizen of West Virginia by choice. So I arrive on the scene here
4:50
about nineteen ninety as a law clerk. No where are you from? Originally,
4:54
I'm originally from Miami, Florida, Okay. Graduate of University of Miami
4:58
undergrad as well as law school, and so I come here to law Clark
5:01
thanks to Judge Bloom. Actually Judge Bloom is the original one that brought me
5:04
into the county system. Enjoyed it a lot, came back here, moved
5:08
here with my wife at that time. We got married after law school,
5:11
and I ended up I'm a real estate lawyer by trade right now, That's
5:15
what I do, And also ended up working with the County commissioners county attorney.
5:18
I'd first substituted in for the county attorney at that point, became acting
5:23
county attorney. Eventually became hired as county attorney. So I've been doing that
5:26
since about ninety five as a permanent county attorney. So I've been on the
5:30
scene here in Kannall County for a long time. I've gotten to meet a
5:31
lot of people. I love Connall County. There's just nothing like being here
5:34
and coming from Miami, coming from a big city to Charleston, which is
5:40
not quite as big as Miami. Of course, it's a big city by
5:42
West Virginia State, my West Virginia standard, but it is not it is
5:46
not Miami. There's no beaches here. But nevertheless, it's been it's just
5:50
been a great ride here. I've had not it's just an opportunity to meet
5:53
people. It's opportunit to meet you know, you get to meet the mayors,
5:55
you get to meet your senators. There's a people that you get to
5:58
know, and you know, when you're in Florida, you didn't get those
6:00
opportunities, and so the opportunity has been here. I've been just an integral
6:03
part. I'm sort of behind the scenes. Most people know. I sit
6:05
in a little corner back in the commission court room, try to stay out
6:09
of the camera at light, and I just assist the Commission as best as
6:13
I can, provide advice. And I've been doing it for a long time.
6:15
I've worked in elections gush Nez. I think I figured thirty two elections
6:17
I've worked in and it's just it's been great. And this is just another
6:21
extension of what I do. I'll only be there for seven months and then
6:25
I'll be stepping right back to that little corner I was in, but go
6:29
back behind the curtain, go back behind the curtain. But I'm hoping that
6:31
I can can do quite a bit while i'm there. From a different perspective,
6:35
why did you want to be considered for the post? Why did you
6:38
put your name in a half? I'll be honest, it was for continuity
6:41
for the county. I felt we just needed we didn't need to number one
6:44
bring somebody else new in for a seven month period. And at the county,
6:48
the commission staff I've worked with obviously for a very long time. I've
6:53
worked with almost all the elected officials for a long time. It helped felt
6:56
that it would be stability for the county. You know, Commissioner carpet Er
6:59
was Commissioner Carper has been an integral part of the county for so long and
7:02
his resignation leaves a hole in the county at this point in time, and
7:06
it was before we have a new commissioner in January. It just provides a
7:10
little relaxation, I should say. They know who they knew, a familiar
7:14
face, familiar face in that room. I want to talk about Ken Carper
7:16
for a moment, regardless mark of the way that his political career came to
7:21
an add as I said in the setup for this interview, he will be
7:25
regarded overall as a great a great county commissioner. Big shoes to fill for
7:30
you, sir. Absolutely he was, and as I said Thursday night,
7:33
he was the heart in Solo, Kononk County, and no matter what people
7:38
thought of him, he was always trying to do the right thing for the
7:40
citizens of Konk County. Whether we're building buildings, were enhancing the traditional annex,
7:44
whatever we might be doing, he was always there to make sure we
7:46
were doing what needed to be done, might be doing water projects, working
7:49
in the park system. Obviously it's integral part with our emergency services, making
7:54
sure they had everything they needed and someone we can always rely on to do
7:58
that. And yeah, I always looked on it admiration. Obviously, he
8:01
comes in after I've actually been county attorney for a couple of years and I
8:05
was acting at that point in time, and as he wins his election,
8:09
we talk and he says, Mark, I'm just going to make you Per.
8:11
I'm not going to take you out of here. You've been here for
8:13
a long and a long time, and you bring a little history to the
8:16
county and we work together on a lot of projects. And it's I told
8:20
him I've talked to him. So I'm really going to miss him sitting there
8:22
up there and missed talking to him. But he'll be around town, so
8:26
we'll see talking again to Mark Slotnick, who's the new Canawa County Commissioner of
8:30
a Dave Allen show and five that he live, presented in part by Pinnacle
8:33
Consultants. Whether you're replacing a roough free modley in the kitchen or replace in
8:35
a bathroom, keep it safe, keep it legal. With Pinnacle Consultants,
8:39
they can inspect your psych collect samples before lab analysis, and provide results within
8:43
about a week. Test in all renovations for mold, as bestos and led
8:46
as the law. There's a Pinnacle Court dot net for Pinnacle Consultants. Because
8:48
what you don't know can't hurt you. So, Mark, what do you
8:52
hope to accomplish in your time as County Commissioner? The main thing is stability
8:56
in the county, right And and I'm gonna be spending this week actually I'm
8:58
going to be meeting with the elected officials. So again I don't need to
9:00
introduce myself to elected officials. They've known me for a long time, but
9:03
I need to get their perspectives. I've not necessarily sat in their offices to
9:05
see exactly what's going on behind the scenes and their offices. I want that
9:09
opportunity continue the projects that we're working on. We have and as we mentioned
9:15
Thursday night, we are extending our kartways at Big Ben Golf Course and we've
9:20
agreed to extend the scope on that project. We're working working on the sports
9:24
the Capital Sports Center. That another project, we have a really big project
9:28
that's getting ready to start, which is the judicial Annex, and we have
9:31
to weave We're adding judges and magistrates and we have to expand that. My
9:35
thoughts are, I'm an economic development person. What I do is a living
9:39
is. I basically bring people here and bring them into houses, and I
9:43
want to extend that and have that opportunity to take a look behind the scenes
9:46
in economic development in West Virginia. My children, one of mine lives in
9:50
Ohio, one's living now in Morgantown, and I want to figure out how
9:52
do we keep the children here. It's a large loss, and I kind
9:56
of look at that population numbers, especially in the city of Charleston that's dropped
10:00
thirty thousand and twenty years or probably thirty forty years, and what happened and
10:05
get behind the scenes of that. And that's the role I want to play
10:07
and maybe continue those projects as I go forward. So it is is it
10:13
official now? I mean, were you sworn in last week at the meeting
10:16
or does that happen later? And when is your first meeting? I was
10:18
sworn in last Thursday night at about the beginning of the meeting, and I
10:22
stepped right up there for the County Commission meeting and immediately forgot to vote on
10:26
the first vote. Good knowing that of course, I always sat there quietly
10:30
and wasn't allowed to talk, but yes, quickly. So my first meeting
10:33
was actually last Thursday night. And then we'll of course meet about every other
10:35
week again June thirteenth. It's been my life. Thursday nights, well,
10:39
I mean, yeah, Thursday nights is County Commission nights already on your calendar,
10:41
so you don't have to learn that mark. Best of luck to you,
10:46
you know, all three County Commissioners have a standing invitation up here on
10:50
this show. Anytime, anytime you wanted to get something going on, you
10:54
know Selango and and mister Carper and Commissioned President Wheeler, I'd just say,
10:56

15:05

15:11
on Friday. You know, I love to talk food and we have a
15:13
new food truck here in the area. This one's a little bit unconventional.
15:16
Heather Hardbit is with us now from Trojan Landing. Marinci joins us talk about
15:20
Heather. Good morning, welcome to the show. Good morning, thank you
15:22
for being here. Thank you for having me tell us about this food truck.
15:24
So we bought a food truck, trojan, landing marine. Okay,
15:30
So ideally, the concept behind it is that when you're outboating on the river,
15:37
they're not a lot of places to be able to stop with your boat
15:39
and pull off and get something to eat. The levee is always busy,
15:43
it's hard to get into it, and then there aren't a whole lot of
15:46
other restaurants. So we purchased a food truck and we are setting up at
15:50
our marina. All boaters are welcome to pull up, dock, bring your
15:54
kids, bring your dogs. We've got a great variety of food and we're
15:58
going to be there, you know, weekends and before live on the levee
16:02
and just trying to hit all those busy times whenever people are on the river
16:06
and want something to snack on. Where did you get come up with this
16:07
idea, as it's been done in other other areas you've seen or in the
16:11
past few years, we've allowed other food trucks to come down and set up,
16:15
and we've had some that were slightly successful, but it was always a
16:21
trouble finding somebody who would kind of be consistent with the time down there,
16:25
and so we decided the best way to make sure that it was, you
16:29
know, a regular thing that people could rely on to be there, whether
16:32
permitting was for us to do it ourselves. I mean, everybody else is
16:36
making money, why not you? Why not? So you saw a need
16:40
here and you just kind of attacked it. Now have you have you actually
16:42
started it? Yeah? Yeah, we started Memorial weekend and then we ran
16:47
through all last week. We actually are setting up in our parking lot up
16:51
by our showroom for lunch during the week as well. So even if you're
16:56
not a boater, on the rest of the week, except for Wednesday,
16:59
we're going to be closed. When days you can swing by between eleven and
17:02
two and pick up some lunch. Okay, so this is not just while
17:04
alive on the Laby's going on me, You guys can be open pretty Muchia,
17:07
We're we're doing full service. So we'll service the marina on Friday,
17:11
Saturdays, and Sundays, and then we'll service the rest during the week.
17:15
Now, do you plan to take off during the wonder months? I mean,
17:18
when you're not going to hit people on their Have you gotten that far
17:19
yet? We probably will. We'll probably shut down after Labor Day. We
17:25
may extend into a little bit after that just depending on weather. Okay,
17:30
our whole businesses depending on weather. Well, the important thing that I want
17:33
to know is about the food. So what do you got. We got
17:37
kind of typical bar food ish. We've got hamburgers, hot dogs, French
17:41
fries, chicken tenders, you know, basically anything that you want to pick
17:47
up with your hands and go eat. But what we've tried to do is
17:51
elevate everything a bit. Almost everything's homemade. So all of our sauces,
17:56
we've got really good Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich. Actually saw online about that.
18:00
I'm a big fan of the Nashville Hot Chicken. Well, our Nashville Hot
18:03
Chicken, our sauces homemade. All of our sauces and dressings are make the
18:07
slow from scratch every day. And all of our mac and cheese everything like
18:11
that is made from scratch. And so I tried to did a lot of
18:15
research and we did a lot of trials to make sure that all of our
18:18
recipes were spot on and really good. What seems to have been the biggest
18:22
hit so far in the first come month or so, so, the Nashville
18:25
Hot Chicken sandwich has been super popular your dish and we also have the one
18:29
called the Canal Monster, which is like our fries, which are like a
18:32
seasoned fry, and then homemade mac and cheese, and then we take the
18:34
Nashville Hot chicken tenders and we chop it up and put on top of that,
18:38
and then we do our homemade ranch and our signature boat sauce, which
18:41
is like a creamy kind of creole sauce, Cajun sauce on top of it.
18:48
And I'd say, no, lie, it probably weighs like four pounds.
18:51
Really, yeah, a food in one box and it is so good.
18:53
I've got former Mayor Danny Jones coming up in the next segment, who
18:56
you know, restaurant Tour Extraordinary, and he's just kind of sound pretty good,
19:00
does it not? Does it not? Danny? Danny's all exciting anybody.
19:07
Danny's just happy he's not behind the counter or anymore. We're gonna get
19:10
Danny back. But here's what, here's an idea. Bring Danny now,
19:12
Danny, come do some barbecue for us. Sure? Why not? There
19:22
you go? See now, networking, that's what it's all about. Is
19:26
there a place you have like a menu or anything online or your hours or
19:30
is it on the Trojan Landing side or what do you go? On our
19:32
Trojan Landing Facebook page, you can find our menu. We are changing out
19:36
a few things here this week just because we've want to add a couple of
19:40
new things to our menu. You listen to what the people have to say,
19:41
to what they're asking and so ours. And if for some reason we're
19:47
closed, like yesterday we're closed because the weather, but all of our hours
19:49
and our openings and our menu and our specials will all be on the Trojan
19:55
Landing Facebook page. We're looking forward to it. I appreciate it. Thank
19:57
you for having us. So what are the hours again? We're going to
20:03
do four to seven on Friday evenings at the Marina, eleven to seven on
20:07
Saturdays, noon to four on Sundays, and then in our Sugarom parking lot
20:11
we're doing Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays eleven to two. All right,
20:15
well weather, best of luck to you and the family. And who
20:18
do you have with you here? I got my adorable little kiddo, Tristan.
20:22
Tristan, how you doing man? Yeah? Do you want to go
20:25
on the air with mom? You to go? He's tired? What are
20:27
you working? This kid to death over here there. Our child labor laws
20:30
in this day, is that what it is? And now that in summertime,
20:33
he's staying up a little bit later than he maybe should, and I
20:37
woke him up pretty early this morning. But he's a big fan of the
20:41
food track. Like he's my biggest critic. He's the one who's like,
20:45
Okay, our boat sauce, this is good, this chicken tender is really
20:48
good. This some work. So he's tried pretty much everything and given me
20:53
all of the best feedback. It's always good. It's always good to be
20:56
able to have a credit. Heather. I appreciate you being here. We'll
20:59
be very ziting saying things. Oh absolutely, you had me at Nashville Hot
21:03
Chicken, I said, Heather, harbud is here. It's night twenty Ryan.
21:06
We're not going to take the break. I think we're just going to
21:07
go straight to Danny. Heather, thank you, Tristan, thank you.
21:11
Enjoy your summer, enjoyed it. So yeah, we're gonna put on to
21:12
move Danny over here. Uh and again we got Matt Sutton coming up a
21:17
little bit later on. Matt, of course, is the chief of staff
21:19
for the Good One. Administration. He'll be coming up a little bit later
21:22
on Todave Island Show in five and He Live. Brought to you apart by
21:25
Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. Ryan Nicholson, Desire producer
21:29
Today, Former Charleston mayor Danny Jones, Danny, good morning, How are
21:33
you good. I don't think she took me seriously. I said, bring
21:36
me a couple of pork butts. Uh uh, you know, some Boston
21:37
butt shoulders. We'll make sure it happens. I'm not a block, so
21:41
it's gonna if she doesn't want me to do it, you know, but
21:44
if she wants me to, I'll do it for her. Before we get
21:48
to the death of former Mayor John Hutchinson, I want to get your thoughts
21:52
because I know you got them on on Senator Joe Manchin leave you the Democratic
21:56
Party becoming an independent? Well, I think he's leaving a door open to
22:00
run for president and uh president and not governor anything else. He would if
22:07
he was going to run for a governor, he'd run as a Democrat.
22:10
He's you know Steve, would you know Steve? You know he's really a
22:17
good friend of mine, and you served together, didn't you. Oh yeah,
22:19
I tell you something. If you want to vote for the most decent
22:23
person that's ever run for that job, vote for him. But you know,
22:26
Steve's Mayor Huntington, and uh, I said, are you gonna You're
22:33
going to stay there? Oh yeah, I want to finish what I started.
22:36
Okay, Well, it's just different for me. I mean, I'd
22:38
be up and up and down every day, nothing but governor. So we'll
22:44
see what happens. But I really like Steve and you couldn't ask for a
22:47
better guy. His specialty when he was in the House was education. He's
22:51
just an incredibly decent human being. So you think Joe May may run for
22:56
president? I think so. You think so? I think so because I
23:00
don't know how many how many ballots no labels is on. I don't know
23:07
how many states. I think twelve. And if you could get him and
23:11
somebody like John Huntsman, there's nobody in the country more qualified to be president
23:17
of the United States than John Huntsman. I don't care who it is.
23:21
He's the man, former governor Utah, former ambassador to China, speaks mandar
23:27
in Chinese. He's just first class. I want to get your take on
23:33
the Trump verdict. I came down that late Thursday, and was there anything
23:37
that you saw happen over the weekend? I know, a former president,
23:41
an interview on Fox News is or anything that would make you want to add
23:44
to any of the comments you said on the air a couple days ago with
23:45
hoping I thought he was going to be convicted. I don't think he had
23:49
a fair shot there. I don't care for the guy. I did a
23:53
I don't know if you watched that thing I did in the middle of the
23:56
night. It's on my Facebook page by four and am minutes. And you
24:03
know, the case was a stretch. They've never done a case like that
24:07
in New York before. And you don't start doing the case is like that
24:11
by a former president United States, because all it's going to do is divide
24:15
the country even worse than it already is. And President Trump helps helps perpetuate
24:22
that. See, he can't stop his sidewalk sidebars. It was just a
24:26
mistake. I mean, it's not a likable presentation of a human being.
24:32
He's just I man, I looked at jury looking at that, say,
24:34
who's he think he is? He's a defendant and courtier and the prosecutor and
24:40
the judge and everybody's saying. And then then they dismiss him for a week.
24:44
So they go home and hear all that anti Trump stuff in Manhattan or
24:47
wherever they live. He never had a shot in New York. Jury Hoppy
24:52
said he did all they do for Dyer, and then he had John Decker
24:55
on. They backed him up. No, folks, and I'll give you
24:57
one more. You want one more? Perhaps they will not convict Hunter Biden
25:02
in Delaware. That trial starts today. So you don't think we get a
25:04
conviction on him, Yeah, not at all. So does Trump do jail
25:10
time because most people say there's nobody does jail time. Yeah. But it's
25:14
here's the interesting thing, Danny that you said not on this because most people
25:18
and I think you and I both said this on the show. Most people
25:21
thought the Stormy Daniels was the least of the cases. Is that the big
25:25
ones are still coming up. But yet he gets convicted on the on all
25:27
thirty four counts. But that'll be overturned on appeal because those cases will be
25:32
a turn the serious one. To me, most people say the slam dunk
25:36
one is in Florida. But in Florida, they're going to be at Port
25:40
Lucy. Port Lucy is Mago country. Okay, that the jury could flip
25:45
on him. He never had a shot at a fair jury in New York
25:48
and he won't DC. But to me, the DC case is the case,
25:51
and he's got a four count indictment. Two of them will be dismissed
25:55
because I think that the the Supreme Court is going to rule that this business
26:02
about impeding government operations, you know, justice courses said, well, let
26:07
me answer you if somebody pulled a fire alarm to keep the House and going
26:10
in session, and the the Biden Justice apartments kind of caught with their you
26:17
know what in their hand because they the answer that that's very subjective. So
26:23
all those cases, they might rule against that, and it might be a
26:26
way for some of these defendants to mitigate their charges because they don't. They
26:32
don't charge people for that when think pink, when they interrupt a session of
26:37
of a of a committee, they don't. They don't prosecute anybody for that.
26:44
They didn't. Jamal Bowman paid a thousand dollars fine for for jerking that
26:49
that fire alarm, you know, talking to former mayor Danny Jones to Dave
26:53
Island, showing five that the li like bright to apart by Hustands Pizza this
26:56
month is your favorite. Hustans get a large eteenage BRONI Pisa had any whole
27:00
tenant sub only twenty three ninety nine. I want to get the former mayor
27:04
John Hutchinson, Danny, I was not living in Charleston when he was mayor.
27:07
I was much younger, but I am certainly aware of his administration.
27:11
Tell me about the first time you met John Hutchinson and your oppressions. Well,
27:15
he was I first learned about him when I was, of all places,
27:18
Vietnam, and my dad and I were sending tapes back and forth to
27:22
each other that we could play and talk to each other, and of course
27:26
we would talk a lot of politics, and I remember my dad send me
27:29
a tape back said the first thing, there was a lot of corruption on
27:33
the police department and John kind of ran against it. And one of the
27:37
guys he ran against was a guy named Dallas Bis who'd been the police chief.
27:42
But you had some corruption on the department, and he was a conservative
27:48
Democrat. And my dad told me, he said, your mother and I
27:49
were going to vote for John. I said, wow, I thought we
27:53
didn't vote for Democrats, but he said, he's a conservative Democrat. And
27:57
then I found out two years earlier he had voted for Senator Byrd to be
28:02
re elected, and so he voted for Democrats. And John was a good
28:07
mayor. He was able to bring in the money, He had a good
28:11
presentation, handsome guy Barry Barry, who was my cousin, was very attractive,
28:19
and she had been married before, like when I was nine years old,
28:23
she got married to guy named Andy Payne. Her her maiden name was
28:27
Thomas her Her she she is the mother, and Andy Payne was the father
28:33
of Drew and Tommy Payne, who you may know. And so then John
28:40
married her and they stayed married until Barry died, and now John's died.
28:45
And but he was he could be a bit brash, but a bit confrontational,
28:49
bit negative, and he don't you have to be all those things because
28:52
the same thing Danny could be said about you, And don't you have to
28:56
be those things to be mayor of the largest city in the day. Yeah,
28:59
yeah, But I don't feel like I got out of hand until my
29:03
last term. And then I didn't want to out of hand. I didn't
29:07
want to be there, right, I mean, but I thought my first
29:10
three terms I was okay. I mean, I would do poetry and stuff.
29:14
The key is the thief, the US. The user fee is the
29:18
key. For police you can know, for roads you can drive on,
29:21
and policemen you can see. And we won that best seventy five percent.
29:25
And that's when people said, Okay, he's got this thing locked up.
29:27
So I'd stay there at four more terms. But John was a good man.
29:33
He had a temper. He ran for governor in seventy six when when
29:38
he was into his second term, and he came in probably last or once
29:45
to the last. You had you had Sprouse, Rockefeller, you had Ken
29:48
Heckler, you had a couple others in there. Rocke Feller won the thing,
29:56
and uh so John went back and there was never a good relationship between
30:00
he and Jay. And in nineteen eighty, I mean in seventy two he
30:08
may have very well supported Arch I mean because he and Jaden, He and
30:12
Jay didn't like each other because Jay had dated Barry, and the things you
30:19
learned when Danny Well show she not I'm not saying anything untoward. But yeah,
30:25
he came here in sixty four sixty five, and he dated was single.
30:29
He dated some women, and I think Barry might have been one of
30:30
them. Barry was a good looking woman. Now I'm telling you, is
30:34
it true that that John Hutchinson hired you as a grave digger? Yes?
30:38
He. I couldn't get a job, and I came home and my feelings
30:45
about where I should work were kind of like they were when I was in
30:47
high school. I didn't I hadn't stepped up yet. So I looked in
30:51
the paper. There they Saint Francis needed and orderly. I was going to
30:55
go apply for that. So then somebody called down there could have been my
31:02
uncle, said you got to give him a job. He's a veteran,
31:06
he can't get a job. So they got me in through what's called CEDA,
31:10
the CEDA program, and it wasn't permanent help. But I went up
31:15
under the beautification umbrella. But I dug Graves all that summer until the garbage
31:21
strike in seventy two, which shut the city down and was my first exposure
31:26
to politics because I went to the raucous meeting that they had when Holly Brown
31:32
and all the folks. They shut down the town and John wasn't going to
31:37
have it, and he fired a bunch of people and broke the strike.
31:40
And it was sad. It was sad to watch. But at that point,
31:45
what am I going to two dollars and forty cents an hour? And
31:47
no, no, no. Then I went to sell bottle of water for
31:49
Tyler Mountain and talk about the growth before we let you go, Danny,
31:55
talk about the growth of Charleston under Mayor Hutchinson. I mean, i've here
31:57
in the last couple days. People talked about the town Center, and people
32:00
have talked about the Civic Center, which is they called it back then in
32:07
the early seventies because I used to make their lunches when I had number eight.
32:10
They would have the meeting called super Block. And one guy that was
32:15
Caman guy can see his face, I can't think of his name. He's
32:17
up in Clarksburg now, and they would I would feed him otis and I
32:22
would fix their their lunch and call you know, their sandwiches and salads and
32:27
stuff like that. And so they would have a meeting called Superblock. That's
32:30
what it was called. And that's how primitive the thing was at that point,
32:35
they hadn't even dug out the uh the uh the erawheads out of the
32:38
ground because they had to do an environmental thing. But they had pretty well
32:43
bought all the property. And it upset it up up into a lot of
32:47
people, you know, a lot of a lot of black folks that didn't
32:51
like me pretty much from what I know, I mean just from reading and
32:53
hearing people talk to me. And it pretty much eliminated a neighborhood. Yeah,
32:58
and then then it when they did the interstate, the same thing happened.
33:01
White man come white man's road through black man's property, which is exactly
33:06
what it was. But the problem in their defense those properties were all in
33:13
trust and that nobody was doing it there were the properties would eventually fallen down.
33:20
They weren't. They didn't own the properties, were renting them. Right.
33:22
It give me thirty seconds on on the legacy of John Hutchinson. Where
33:25
what does he rank as far as the mayors of Charleston, Like maybe he
33:29
would be he would be, you know, very up there on the list.
33:32
His problem was after he left, he he had he was ambitious,
33:37
Unlike me, I didn't want to step in. He he became a congressman
33:40
in the short term, and then he got in this trouble where Barry went
33:45
up there and got in the way of everything and said, said, if
33:47
you're going to hire women, they got their face has to stop a clock.
33:52
And there was a cons was a he had been a public safety director
33:55
here and went with John up there and Conx and he fell out, and
34:00
then he spilled the whole beings about the and Taylor Jones had a cartoon of
34:05
some woman sitting on the bed with the club the clock spring coming out.
34:08
And John lost the election, the big election which he protested and went into
34:15
the whole election denial mode, file of lawsuits sat in federal court forever,
34:20
and the whole thing was just negative. And he never he never was able
34:23
to do it again. But he was a good mayor for maryor Danny Jones.
34:27
I appreciate you being here, man, Thanks a lot, Thank you.

38:14
I don't know what that's all about. All right, So your thoughts
38:17
though on the pasting and former Mayor John Hutchinson. I know the current mayor
38:21
put out a statement marking his passing over the weekend. Thoughts it was,
38:25
you know, anytime we lose somebody who gave their life to public service,
38:30
we always want to honor that. And Mayor hudgetson, you know, spend
38:32
a lot of time during his mayorship working on the Coliseum Convention Center, working
38:37
on economic development and working our community centers, and that will be the legacy
38:40
that leaves here in Charleston. I unfortunately did not know Mayor Hudginson. I
38:45
wasn't around in that time, but I've heard a lot of great things over
38:47
him. Was having breakfasts over a smoke house on Saturday. A lot of
38:51
folks were talking about him, and certainly any impact that he had in the
38:53
city Charleston is still being felt because we still have people going to the Colesseum
38:57
Convention Center and we still have great community rec center. So it's a good
39:00
legacy to leave. City Council meets tonight, Matt some talks about about guns
39:06
in a city, or about changing some ordinances or at least taking a look
39:09
at some of the ordinances about gun sales in the city. Talk about that,
39:13
well, I mean, I think it needs to be framed correctly.
39:15
It's not really a talk about gun sales or guns themselves. It's actually a
39:19
just abiding to the state law. The legislature changed the changed the law last
39:22
year that were that told municipalities that they were not allowed to treat gun retail
39:28
shops any different than any other retail shops in their zoning ordinances, and we
39:32
disagreed with that position. It's why the mayor, our city attorney, our
39:37
planning director, and the entire municipal league. Matter of fact, we're up
39:39
at the legislature pushing against this and lobbying against this change in another change that
39:44
exists as well, that speed up the requirements of how fast the decision has
39:47
to be meant on application for a business. For a lot of different reasons.
39:52
Number one is we should, you know, we should be able to
39:54
govern our own cities, and we think we did a pretty good job of
39:57
it and didn't feel that the legislature needed to change the Every city is different
40:00
in creating a statewide rule is a little bit complicated with something like this when
40:05
you look a look at the variety of cities in the state of West Virginia.
40:08
But at the same time, they set the rules and we have to
40:12
follow them. So the real sort of policy decision or controversy of this occurred
40:16
months ago with the legislature, and now it's just simply a really just a
40:20
technical cleanup for us to say that we're going to abide by the state law,
40:22
because if we don't, then we open ourselves up to a lot of
40:25
liability and the potential for our Zonian ordinance altogether to be thrown out, which
40:30
meant it would be the Wild West in terms of businesses being able to occupy
40:34
anywhere close to schools or anything like that. So we're really just aherence of
40:37
state law. Doesn't have to be something we like, but they're in charge
40:39
and we have to. We have to abide by that or face the legal
40:43
consequences that come with them. But Dave Island showing five any line brought to

41:04
Got text waiting on you, sir, That's why you're here. That's right,
41:07
Tex says the PSC Fire Hydrant Study Group has been in the news lately,
41:09
but the fire hydrant closest to children manor apartments has been out of order
41:14
for six months. It's a city doing anything to address this critical piece of
41:17
infrastructure that serves the numerous residents that reside there. So we have been working
41:22
with our water company in our fire department on checking fire hydrants throughout the entire
41:25
city. I know we've got folks listening to and I'll take a note on
41:29
that exact one and go back and make sure we take a look today.
41:31
I'm certain it's on our fire department's list. But yeah, we've been working
41:35
with the water company fire apartments to identify fire hydrants that our fire department believes
41:40
need work on. And it's a process and it's slower than we would like,
41:45
but it has been a good partnership and at least in terms of getting
41:47
ones fixed that the fire department deems necessary for public safety. So we'll make
41:52
sure to take a look at that one for sure, you know, Matt,
41:54
we're a couple of weeks removed from all the bikes being in Charleston for
41:58
the USA Cycling Pro Road National Chair Sampionship. I know the numbers are still
42:00
being crunch but overall, just the thoughts on behalf of the Good One administration,
42:07
we were absolutely thrilled. I mean, honestly, we had no idea
42:08
what to expect we hadn't done anything like this, weren't quite sure how it
42:12
was going to work. First of all, I want to thank our entire
42:15
team within the city, with our public works crew and our Street department and
42:17
our police department, our fire department. This was a monumental effort. And
42:22
even if you asked the folks from the USA Cycling, they assumed that it
42:23
was going to go not extremely well the first year because we'd never done it
42:28
before, and they were just they were floored with how much how profession our
42:32
team was. We knew it was going to be the case, but they
42:34
were really excited about it. My favorite story about it all was one where
42:38
one of our street department guys came so, well, it took us longer
42:40
to put those cones out than we would have liked, But the USA Cycling
42:44
head came over or later on said, man, we really appreciate you all
42:46
putting those cones out. Nobody's ever helped us do anything like that before.
42:50
And our guys were beating themselves up by how long it took, and they
42:52
were just thrilled that somebody did it. But by the way, that took
42:54
place at five am in the morning, so I mean We had folks out
42:57
there working hard and then just to see the crowds. It was really exciting
43:00
personally. I never experienced the sport and really loved it, and I think
43:02
a lot of people feel that way. Knowing now that we have the logistics
43:06
down, next year is going to be great. But to see everybody you
43:08
know downtown and I tell you what the place to be and I only got
43:10
to spend a little bit time up there. I would spend more time up
43:13
there next year as Wart's Avenue with Minny Leonard and Jim Harris. Many up
43:16
there slinging fish and Jim up there keeping crowd control. It was an extremely
43:21
I mean and the bikers that was one of their favorite places to be,
43:23
so that was really an exciting place to hang out and watch the races.
43:27
And up South Hills they had the shops and the shops had their party on
43:30
Sunday and it was really enjoyed it. I'm pumped for next year. I
43:32
wish it was coming back a little bit sooner. We'll take a break.
43:35
But it was just because I didn't really know what they expect. And that
43:37
sigh and that hold your horses came from all the city workers that's just we
43:42
got the guy to coming up and then well, I want to talk about
43:44
some of them because it's going to be a busy couple of weeks and next
43:45
month or so with Charles, we're going to get to that. After the
43:47
breakplasts. I got more texts to get to. I did want to tell

47:22
Chief of Staff Matt Sutton is here. On the show this morning, text
47:25
says the city is quick to release economic figures for Regatta, and one would
47:30
think the same for the recent bicycling event. But why haven't they released the
47:34
economic impact from Multifest? Oh we did, We did have the economic impact
47:37
from Aultifest last show. Don' remember what it was that Charleston CVB does them
47:40
all? I can't remember off the top of my head. But Multifest did
47:44
release that. They worked directly with the CVB and got those numbers and they
47:46
released it, and they did one for festival, and I believe a couple
47:49
of the concerts serve to call seem convincenter. Yeah, I mean generally speaking,
47:52
and I'm gonna have Tam Brady on soon to talk about the economic of
47:54
the bike thing. But that's not I mean, you guys get figures,
47:58
you know, Okay, well this was economic impact, but when it comes
48:00
to actually breaking it down, and I know because I'm on the CVB and
48:04
Putnam County, that's kind of that's kind of the job of the CVB.
48:07
I mean, to give individual heads and beds kind of kind of information that
48:12
comes more from them and they then they report to you. That's right.
48:14
Yeah, I mean they've got a numbers come directly from CVB too, so
48:15
they're all come from the same place. Speaking of things going on, as
48:20
I said a couple of weeks removed now from the Pro National Bike Championships,
48:24
we got Regatta coming up. We got phone with the Dome, we got
48:28
festival, we got wine and jazz. I'm sweating over here. We've got
48:32
a lot of stuff going on here. It's amazing. I mean, I
48:35
think this is you know, this is probably the second, maybe third year,
48:37
I'd say third year, you're really going to see sort of the spring
48:40
and summer time in Charleston be the time in which people are out, they're
48:44
in our community, a lot of visitors into our town, and it's just
48:47
a really exciting time of the year. I think, you know, we
48:50
dipped our toe into a few events the first few years we were here,
48:52
and then we had COVID obviously, and then you know, really came out
48:55
of gates with Regatta in twenty one, and now it's just it's just been
48:59
twenty two. So it's been our summers, while extremely hectic, and you
49:04
know, it works people very hard. Is just an amazing place part of
49:07
our town, and it's really what's set us apart over the last couple of
49:09
years and we'll continue to be into the future. Is this sort of entertainment,
49:14
music arts scene that goes goes into our city throughout the entire summer and
49:19
then basically into in October November. But Dave Island showing five any line bright

49:44
restaurants that closed, you know, chop House and Tidewater and a couple of
49:49
others. But what about the response to and I'm gonna give them a free
49:51
plug here. They don't advertise with us, but my god, they should.
49:53
Talking about Serios. Those of us in Putnam County have been preaching Sergio's
49:59
first time. You know, it's a main street and Hurricane but keep tracking
50:04
your Facebook pages all the good places there in the valley. No, it's
50:07
amazing, and I think it was. It really is as you said.
50:10
You know, people will get on Facebook and they'll talk about the bad stuff.
50:13
You don't see it much as much on the good stuff. But I've
50:15
seen a lot on Sergio's and I've been there. We ate, my wife
50:17
and I ate there on Thursday, and it's it's delicious. And to your
50:22
point, they know what they're doing right, They've they've opened restaurants before,
50:24
they've run them. They know what they're doing and they hit the ground running
50:27
over there. And everybody I've talked to that's been has been great. And
50:30
I still think they're worrying on their ABC license. Maybe they got it,
50:34
but they might be. But other than that, I mean, the food
50:36
was phenomenal the short and I think it's a bigger and the reason I want
50:38
to bring that up, Matt, it really had nothing to do with the
50:40
restaurant per se, but I wanted to talk about that investment in the Elk
50:43
City district. I mean, Sergio is A is a very successful restaurant touris.
50:50
I said he's got a place some hurricanes get place as a Nitro.
50:52
He could have put that anywhere, but he chose specifically to put it in
50:55
that part of town. It's a great walking area in town, and I
50:58
think that's the that's the key, is a lot there's a lot of business
51:00
over there. You're going to see Legal Aid move into the old Stat's Hospital
51:02
building here in a you know, next year or so, so you're gonna
51:07
have a lot more people. And it's a great walking area. I mean
51:08
to be honest, and not not to you know here for the Mayor's office,
51:12
but you know, my wife own's a business that's located right across the
51:15
street from Sergio. She was downtown for a long time and it was great
51:16
and then she moved over there and her foot traffic increased to bunch. I
51:20
mean, it's a it is a walking community over there, and that's what
51:22
makes it really nice is that people go in and they want to relax and
51:24
have a and have a nice meal. And that's really a great part.
51:28
And the more that we can do in this town to connect the west side
51:30
to downtown, to the Clay center of the East End, that's what it's
51:34
all about. That's the overall vision and the goal and having somebody like Sergio
51:37
is there is a big part of that goal. And not of that,
51:39
but the Elk City bee Strow that's opened up, and then the newfound love
51:44
even though man, they have the best Hamburgers at Dancing Dog, but it's
51:47
gotten crowded because they're so successful now. But even that has been has been
51:52
really helpful because you know, when you see events like state high school basketball
51:55
tournament or other things, you want people who want to park and walk and
51:58
that's walking distance. It's it's not a hard walk, and I think that's
52:00
important for our city. All Right, real quick, I want to ask
52:02
you about this. I had counselman Chad Robinson last week talking about the ongoing
52:07
traffic issues in Kanal City. Give me twenty seconds. Anything that you consider.
52:09
Yeah, you know, Counselman Robinson and counselman king of on top of
52:13
this along with the Marrison's begin It is painful, but it will get finished.
52:16
It. We've talked to the contractors and they are the project managers that
52:21
he do expect it to be finished this year with some touch ups in the
52:22
twenty twenty five. It will be better for Kanall City in the end and
52:25
We've seen a lot of businesses. We've seen some close. We've seen a
52:29
lot open in Kanall City as well, and that I think is only going
52:30
to continue to increase once we have the infrastructure in place that can really help
52:35
them succeed. Good One Administration Chief of Staff Matt Sutton. Always a pleasure
52:37
to have you on the show Man. Thanks a lot, Absolutely no appreciate
52:39
it. I'm glad it just checked on me. You didn't want me on,
52:42
so I'm glad you back. I heard you were you were upset about
52:45
that. You're always welcome on the show. Coming up on the show tomorrow,
52:47
say Democratic partner Chaire Mike Pushkin will be here at pulkat Nominee for a
52:51
g J. B. Mccusky and we're going to talk to pick a ball
52:52
with Johnny Rutherford Hoppy coming up. Don't forget the Joe Manchin interview that ought
52:55
to be interesting. I'll see you tomorrow till that have fun them four point
