Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Distinguishing the Vital Mind from the Mental Power of Reason, Thought and Will
Transcript
- 0:01We may observe feelings, perceptions, thoughts, emotions,
- 0:06ideas, imaginations, memories, etcetera, all arising in our
- 0:12minds. And for most of us this is all
- 0:16just mental activity. And for most people this is
- 0:21clearly enough. For those taking up the
- 0:25spiritual life and practice, however, it becomes difficult to
- 0:29understand what is going on and what can and should be done
- 0:33about it, to bring about the right mental texture of the
- 0:37consciousness, to be receptive and able to handle the higher
- 0:42inspirations, intuitions and powers as they enter into the
- 0:48mind. It is thus highly useful to be
- 0:52able to distinguish the different elements that bring
- 0:55about the mental activity we experience, and thereby to
- 1:00understand the source, the power and the intention of the forces
- 1:06at work in our mind. Stuff.
- 1:10A particular note is that the vital aspect of our lives has
- 1:14tremendous power to convince the mind to support the fulfillment
- 1:19of its desires and wishes. What may seem to be a form of
- 1:23mental reasoning process may in fact be specious reasoning
- 1:28driven by the vital nature and its bias towards its own
- 1:31fulfillment. The true mental power focuses on
- 1:36principles and concepts that are native to the mental world.
- 1:41There is something of a separation from the life powers
- 1:44that can create a process of logic and reasoning that is not
- 1:48subject to the desire soul, but independent of individual ego
- 1:54fulfillment. Shriorobindo writes Quote The
- 2:00vital mind is that part of the vital being which builds plans,
- 2:04imagines, arranges things and thoughts according to the life,
- 2:08pushes desires will to power or possession will to action,
- 2:15emotions, vital ego, reactions of the nature.
- 2:20It must be distinguished from the reasoning will, which plans
- 2:24and arranges things according to the dictates of the thinking
- 2:28mind proper, the discriminating reason, or according to the
- 2:32mental intuition, or a direct insight and judgment.
- 2:37The vital mind uses thought for the service, not of reason, but
- 2:42of life push and life power. And when it calls in reasoning,
- 2:47it uses that for justifying the dictates of these powers,
- 2:52imposes their dictates on the reason instead of governing by a
- 2:57discriminating will, the action of the life forces end.
